In small-scale blasting experiments conducted in the Bureau of Mines laboratory, small charges were used to produce craters in blocks of concrete mortar. The results are compared with larger scale experiments of other research workers, and the comparison demonstrates the similarity of the results obtained and indicates that small-scale blasting should be a useful tool for predicting large-scale blasting effects. INTRODUCTION The purpose at this investigation was to conduct blasting experiments in mortar in the laboratory and then, by comparing the results with those from larger scale field blasts in rock to determine to what extent, if any, the laboratory results resemble those in the field. The work described herein was the initial phase of a project aimed at evaluating small-scale blasting as a tool for use in improving blasting techniques. It is evident from the stand-point of control and cost that small-scale blasting would be valuable in the study of rock fragmentation by blasting in mines and quarries, if the extrapolation is valid.

The Federal Bureau of Mines evaluated the prospects for using geothermal energy to generate electricity for mines in remote areas. Given the development of a geothermal resource for this purpose, the subsidiary uses of space heating and agriculture were then examined to see if other industries might be viable given a cheap source of heat energy. Sites investigated were located in three areas of Alaska: Kobuk in the northwest, Unalaska in the southwest, and Stikine River in the southeast. Each site was relatively close to mineral deposits whose prospects for development would be enhanced with cheap power.

On April 26, 1949, the Bureau first approved a machine designed to replace the cycle of cutting, blasting, and loading coal by a single operation. This machine took the coal directly from the solid face and delivered it to transportation equipment. By January 1, 1955, 30 approvals for designs of machines of this type had been granted by the Bureau. In the main, this paper describes briefly the action of the various designs approved as permissible. In addition, the approval number, the date of approval, the voltage of the power supply, the number and character of the explosion-proof accessory parts, the size of the trailing cable, and the overcurrent protection at the outby end of the trailing cable are given for each design. Since no similar information has been published by the Bureau, it is hoped the material in this paper will be valuable in giving the mining public an organized look at the various machines of this nature that have been approved as permissible by the Bureau.

A general description of the activities and results of bauxite investigation by the Bureau of Mines at its bauxite project in Saline and Pulaski Counties, Arkansas has been given in Report of Investigations 4251. The factual data obtained during the project are reported in a series of Reports of Investigation beginning with No. 4251 of which this is the tenth. The data are accompanied by maps showing the location of holes drilled and the deposits developed. Each area upon which work was done is reported by half townships. Each bauxite deposit investigated was assigned a name and a number for ready reference and identification, and its location and name are shown on the appropriate half-township map. The description of each half township is followed by a description of which deposit developed in that half township. The 14 half-township maps and 77 detail maps of the bauxite deposits in this series of reports give the locations and numbers of all the holes drilled on the project except the deep holes drilled to test the geophysical anomalies. The locations of those holes show on figure 13 in volume 1. The descriptions of the deposits developed are followed by complete detailed logs of the drill holes. Many of the widely spaced exploratory holes did not discover bauxite of minable thickness and grade. The pertinent information obtained from the widely spaced exploratory drill holes has been summarized and tabulated. and a table for each half township is given with the discussion covering that area.

The disposal of brines produced with crude petroleum and natural gas has been a long-continuing problem to oil and gas operators as well as to farmers and stock-raisers in the vicinity of producing fields. An impartial appraisal of conditions pertaining to the problem of brine disposal leads to the conclusion that study of the technical consideration, with proper weight given to the economic and social factors, is the most desirable approach to this problem. Brine disposal is a problem of such magnitude in certain areas in the State of Kansas that in August 1934 a cooperative agreement was made between the Kansas State Board of Health and the U. S. Bureau of Mines for a cooperative technical study of methods of brine disposal.

A mineral pigment is a colored substance dug from the ground, which after treatment can be mixed with a drying oil to form a paint. Not all colored earths, however, can be made into satisfactory pigment. Much depends upon the attractiveness and uniformity of the color and the ease of purification. Mineral pigments are distinguished from chemical pigments by a difference in origin and treatment. Chemical pigments are not found ready-made in the earth but must be synthesized or otherwise obtained from other compounds or elements; for example, cadmium yellow, a chemical pigment, is precipitated from a solution of cadmium chloride, hydrochloric acid, and sodium sulfide.

This report describes research carried out by the Bureau of Mines to develop new technology for electrorefining metals at much higher current densities than those normally used in commercial practice, preliminary studies using rotating-ring and cylinder electrodes to increase the mass transport of copper are discussed. Following this work, single- and multichannel cells were developed that utilized a high electrolyte flow in the channels formed by the anode-cathode pairs. Using these cells, copper was successfully refined at current densities in the range of 70 to 300 amp/ft2. The effects of flow rate, electrolyte composition, and grain-refining and leveling agents on the morphology and purity of electrodeposited copper were determined.

This Federal Bureau of Mines report presents information on the accumulation and distribution of helium in U.S. natural gas reservoirs. The investigation concerns the relationship or association of helium with geographic location, geologic age, reservoir depth, nitrogen, carbon dioxide, and argon. Although helium is a minor constituent in natural gas, these data show that certain conditions make some reservoirs statistically more favorable than others for the accumulation of helium. The report is based on gas analysis information collected-by the Bureau from 1917 to 1974 from 10,086 gas samples, representing 6,455 reservoirs in 35 States. The occurrence of helium in the reservoirs was 11.5 percent with less than 0.005 percent of helium, 70.9 percent with 0.005 through 0.29 per-cent of helium, and 17.6 percent with 0.30 percent or more of helium in the gas. Results of the various correlations are presented in tables and charts. Relationships have also been determined quantitatively by measures of correlation. The statistical data can be used to determine the environment under which reservoirs with high-helium contents are most likely to occur. These data can be used with other information for predicting the future helium resources of the United States.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines and the U.S. Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) are participating jointly in a research program to evaluate the strength characteristics and air-leakage resistance of various proposed seal designs for use in underground coal mines. The full-scale seals were constructed in the USBM's experimental mine at the Lake Lynn Laboratory, air-leakage tested, then subjected to pressure pulses of 20 psig or greater. bjected to pressure pulses of 20 psig or greater. In experiments prior to this study, seven seal designs using solid-concrete blocks were tested. Only the standard-type seal passed the explosion and air-leakage criteria. Tests also were performed on four seals constructed with low-density foam blocks. All four of these seal designs withstood the pressure pulse. In more recent studies, nine cementitious foam seal designs of varying thicknesses and densities were investigated. Six of the nine designs successfully survived the explosion overpressures. Six wood- block convergence seals also have been tested. The typical 3-ft-thick, wood-block seal design currently used in many coal mines did not maintain its integrity, in the absence of convergence forces, following the explosion test. Five modified wood-block seals successfully withstood the 20-psig pressure pulse. Based on these tests, three alternative seal construction materials, cementitious foam, low-density foam block, and wood, have been approved by MSHA for use in underground coal mines.

This report presents the results of laboratory mineral evaluations conducted by the federal Bureau of Mines under the joint sponsorship of the U.S. Atomic Energy Commission (AEC) and the Bureau a! Ships, U. S. Department of the Navy. The major purpose of this investigation was to examine and evaluate zirconium minerals representing sizeable deposits in an effort to locate com¬mercial sources of high-hafnium ores. Although determination of the hafnium content was the principal objective, each of the zirconium minerals also was analyzed for combined zirconium-hafnium oxide, silica, uranium, thorium, yttrium, and cerium. The general laboratory procedure involved microscopic examination of the test samples, concentration of the hafnium-bearing zirconium mineral by standard laboratory techniques, and analysis of the derived concentrate by quantitative microscopic, chemical, and X-ray spectrographic methods. Of the several hundred samples tested under this program, 147 are discussed in this report, including 94 from domestic occurrences and 53 from widespread foreign sources.

"During the past several years, alunite from the Marysvale (Utah) region has been the subject of investigation by the Electrometallurgical Section of the Bureau of Mines. The nature and occurrence of this mineral, with considerable data on the Utah deposits, together with a number of results of preliminary experiments, have been given in a previous report. 6/ The geology of the Marysvale region has been reviewed recently. 7/The present paper reports the results obtained by a method involving the sintering of alunite with boric acid and subsequent treatment of the sinter to produce alumina and potassium sulphate.The preliminary work just mentioned had given indications of the separation of sulphate salts high in potassium from fusions of alunite with borax glass.During the course of further work along those lines, fusions of boric acid and alunite were tried. No separation of salts was obtained, but it was observed that rather complete removal of so3 from the alunite occurred and that the sinter could be leached with water to give a solution contain¬ing most of the potash and a residue containing most of the alumina. This paper covers briefly the particular field of dolomite and magnesium limestone; certain uses of high-calcium limestone are mentioned only to show more clearly the limita¬ tions of the magnesian rocks. Such a comparison is helpful because magnesium carbonate is essential for some uses; for others it is immaterial; and for many its presence in an appreciable amount is objectionable. Magnesium carbonate, occurring as a rock resembling limestone or dolomite, is described in United States Bureau of Mines Information Circular 6437, Magnesite. Other com¬ pounds of magnesium are described in United States Bureau of Mines Information Circular 6406, Magnesium Compounds (Other Than Magnesite). Limestone, geologically, is a rock composed essentially of calcium carbonate; commercially, however, the term may include dolomite and magnesium limestone.

In the absence of any subsequent enactment of mining legislation, the Turkish mining law in effect in 1914, when Iraq became a British mandate, is still operative. The Constitution, or Organic Law, of Iraq, adopted by the Constituent Assembly on July 10, 1924, in articles 113 and 114, provides that:3 Ottoman en laws date and thao remained and lave pub- lished on or after that date and which have remained in force in Iraq u to the time of the publication of this law shall remain in force in Iraq' so far as circumstances permit, subject to any modi- fication or repeal in conformity with the proclamations, regula- tions, and laws referred to in the following article, and until they are altered or repealed by the legislative power or the High Court issues a decision rendering them null and void in accordance with the provisions of article 86. (Art. 113.) All proclamations, regulations, and laws by the Commander-in- Chief of His Britannic Majesty's Forces in Iraq, the Civil Commis- sioner, and the High Commissioner, and those issued by the Govern- ment of His Majesty King. Faisal, during the period between Novem- ber 5, 1914, and the date of the coming into force of this Consti- tution, shall be considered to be valid as from the date on which they came into force... (Art. 114.) 4 According to a German authority, it is the Turkish law of March 26, 1906, that, with a few modifications, is still in force. The present survey indicates 'that the average volatility of motor gasoline now being marketed throughout the country falls well within the limits of Federal Specifications. As would be expected, there is a slight decrease in volatility as compared with the gasoline marketed last wine:., but on the average the gasoline sold today is about the same as that sold last summer. During the past five years the Bureau of Mines has made semi-annual surveys of the gasoline marketed in the United States. To obtain a sample of each gasoline sold is obviously impracticable, but the cities in which samples have been collected have been so chosen as to be representative of the more important marketing territories. It is believed, therefore, that the samples obtained are indicative of the quality of gasoline marketed throughout the country.

The Petrographic Section of the Bureau of Mines, Northwest Electrodevelopment Laboratory, Albany, Oreg., annually examines thousands of minerals and rocks. Samples are received from mining, engineers, prospectors, and government agencies, both State and Federal. During the past 2 years certain uncommon minerals have been identified in the samples submitted. Eleven occurrences have been selected for reporting in detail. These selections were made because in most cases a new locality is involved. The data reported are the result of application of the latest techniques, and widely disseminated references concerning each mineral have been added for completeness. Several occurrences have been described by other investigators; in those cases new data have been supplied to supplement the already published information on these occurrences. No uranium-bearing minerals have been included; they will be treated in another paper. The Bureau of Mines does not make chemical analyses or assays for individuals or firms In direct competition with private laboratories. Mineral¬ogical examinations, however, are made for prospectors and the general public. Such examinations a call surface to determine whether the sample in question has possible commercial value. If it has apparent value, the sender is so informed, and suggestions as to its .Arc, development and marketing are offered. The latest scientific apparatus is available to aid in identification. The apparatus includes microscopes, both wide-field and polarizing, a Bunsen-type spectroscope for visual observation of the Zinc and band spectra of many elements, differential thermal apparatus for the examination of hydrous material, apparatus for cutting and mounting either thin sections for study in transmitted or polished surfaces for reflected-light studies, and a high-intensity magnetic separator for concentrating minerals according to their magnetic susceptibility. Also, available, but not an integral part of the Section, are several laboratory-type Geiger counters, a grating spectrograph, and X-ray diffraction apparatus. If need be, all of these tools may be employed to identify a mineral or rock.

"INTRODUCTION In the course of a general investigation of mines and mineral deposits in the Upper Mississippi lead and zinc field, attention of the Bureau of Mines was first directed to the Coker mines area by the presence of large tonnages of old mill tailings containing economically recoverable percentages of lead and zinc. Later, the results of extensive geologic studies of the area were presented to the Bureau of Mines by the Federal Geological Survey, directing attention to the possibility of extending the known ore limits of the area to the north and northeast of the old Coker No. 1 mine workings.With this end in view, the Bureau of Mines undertook a program of churn drilling and sampling. This report describes the work done and presents the data obtained during the period of the Bureau of Mines investigation.ACKNOWLEDGMENTSIn its program of investigation of mineral deposits, the Bureau of Mines has as its primary objective the more effective utilization of our mineral resources to the end that they make the greatest possible contribution to national security and economy. Attempts have been made to electroplate titanium and zirconium from aqueous, nonaqueous, and fused-salt electrolytes. Metals were produced only in fused-salt electrolytes, the major product being sponge metal. All other electrolytes gave only partial reduction of the metal ions. Fused alkali borate electrolytes containing titanium salts gave titanium boride powders and coatings of poor adherence. Some of the problems encountered in the deposition of these metals and some of the aspects of titanium and zirconium chemistry involved are discussed. INTRODUCTION Titanium and zirconium are both relatively light, noncorrosive metals with both military and civilian uses. This has led to intensive investigations into the metallurgy of these metals. Both metals are high in the Electrochemical Displacement Series and are difficult to prepare in a pure state. At present they are prepared by reducing their chlorides, using magnesium. Electrolytic reductions have resulted in the preparation of fine powders or sponge of variable quality. It is believed that a good process of electroplating these metals on a baser metal would result in a very desirable product. The objective of the research summarized in this report was to investigate methods of electrodepositing these metals, with the idea of producing uniform, coherent plates. Most of the work was concentrated on titanium, the more abundant of the two metals. A system developed for titanium should be applicable to zirconium owing to their chemical similarity. Information gained from these experiments may also be applicable to the electro-winning of the metal.

This compilation of statistics covering competitive fuels consumed for heating of residential and commercial buildings is in response to numerous requests for data of this nature to show the relative changes in the demands for the different fuels in recent years. The figures presented cover the amounts of various fuels ant electric energy reported as used for heating dwellings and commercial buildings. However, the totals for gaseous fuels and electricity necessarily include amounts consumed for both cooking and lighting purposes, as these associated household uses could not be readily broken out.
