The U.S. Bureau of Mines formed a team in 1991 to begin developing a long-range research plan for computer-assisted mining that would benefit the metal-nonmetal mining industry. This report details the team's accomplishments, specifically, the development of a model that identifies metal-nonmetal mining research needs that could be addressed by the application of automation technology. The report also provides a summary of automation needs and applications based on visits with mining company representatives. The status and future direction of this work is also presented.

Knoop hardness indentations were studied and measured with the electron microscope on TiB2, HfC, and A1B12 crystals. A detailed description of replicating the indentations using collodion and Faxfilm is made. A John Hopkins grating having 28,800 lines per inch was used to accurately determine the magnification used on the electron microscope. The primary objectives were to prepare carbon replicas of hardness indentations, to measure the indenations accurately, and to compare the results with those obtained with the light microscope. The resulting data showed excellent agreement between the measurements made on the replicas with the electron microscope and those made with the optical microscope. The replicas made from collodion showed slightly better agreement with the light optical values than did the replicas made from Faxfilm.

The Bureau of Mines Solid Waste Program is directed toward three main areas of research: (1) Extraction of mineral, metal, and energy values from urban refuse; (2) recovery of mineral and metal values from wastes generated in the industrial extraction, processing, and utilization of raw materials and mineral-base products; and (3) upgrading and utilization of automotive scrap. The Bureau also has a contract and grant program which supplements the in-house research and aids in the training of personnel in the proper management of mineral- and metal-based solid wastes.

Cooperation between the United States Bureau of Mines and the Safety in Mines Research Board of Great Britain, continuous since 1924, has made possible this and other papers on safety subjects. Grateful acknowledgment is made to representatives of the Board for their assistance in arranging visits to several mine safety stations, and to F. R. Wynne, Deputy Chief Inspector of Mines, for arranging visits to mines in Great Britain and other countries in Europe. During the summer of 1927 the writer had the privilege of visiting the mine safety testing stations in great Britain, Belgium, Germany, and France, in the order named. All of these countries have large coal mines, many of which are rated as gassy. Therefore, when the installation of electrical equipment is contemplated, each of these countries is confronted with the same safety problem as is the United States - the development of electrical equipment that will not ignite gassy atmospheres which through neglect or accident might surround the equipment. The means employed by these countries in safeguarding gassy mines should therefore be of general interest to safety engineers in American coal mines, and it is proposed to give a brief survey for each of the four countries mentioned. The third of these surveys covers conditions in Germany.

For a number of years the Bureau of Mines has been conducting an investigation of crude petroleum from producing fields in the United States and the Western Hemisphere and has published a series of reports on these fields. Analyses of crude-oil samples tom some oil fields of Louisiana are given in Bulletin 291.4/ Analyses of 26 representative crude oils from various producing formations of southern Louisiana are given in is report. These.samples are from 14 field's in 10 parishes in the southern part of the State, usually designated as the "Louisiana Gulf Coast area." ACKNOWLEDGMENTS Thanks are due the representatives of the various companies from whom samples were obtained for their cooperation and assistance in helping to secure representative samples. The samples were analyzed under the direction of E. C. Lane at the Bartlesville station of the Bureau of Mines.

Recent developments in energy conversion, mining and minerals processing, pollution control, and chemical equipment have placed in-creased demands on heat-resistant alloys. Higher corrosion rates from oxidation, hot corrosion, and sulfidation have increased consumption of materials that contain critical and strategic minerals and in many cases have limited productivity. The Bureau of Mines is conducting re-search on substitute materials having greater resistance to high-temperature corrosive atmospheres above 6000 C compared to austenitic stainless steels such as AISI 304, 316, and 310, with the goal of conserving critical metals such as Cr and Ni. The substitute materials are based on Fe-Cr-Ni-Al compositions. Aluminum additions to Fe-Cr-Ni alloys significantly improve high-temperature corrosion resistance, particularly sulfidation resistance. In the alloy, devised by Bureau researchers, aluminum additions are held in the form of a second-phase precipitate, 8NiAl. Minor additions of Ti, Mn, and Si improve workability.

"INTRODUCTION The behavior of particles in a sound field has long been of scientific interest since Kundt (1) 5/ made his classic experiments on some of the interesting effects of standing waves in cylindrical tubes. With the development of the electronic tube and its application to continuous generation of sound, experimental investigation of the Kundt tube was renewed (2). The more intense vibrations set up by a continuously vibrating diaphragm or rod produce even more striking effects than those observed by Kundt. Instead of the striations at the antinode produced by the stroked rod, then, wafer like barriers are formed at the antinodes, sometimes extending over the entire cross-section of the tube. Furthermore, it was observed independently by Andrade (3), Brandt, Freund and Hiedemann (4); and by investigators in the Bureau of Mines laboratories (5) that aerosols, such as ammonium chloride or tobacco smoke, could be flocculated quickly if passed through an intense sound field, particularly when a standing wave field was set up by a resonant enclosure. Because of its possibilities as a new means for removing suspended particles from dust-laden gaseous furance or smoke, the phenomena attending the behavior of suspended particles in a und field have been studied intermittently by the Bureau of Mines over the past decade.The first experimental work was done with a magnetostriction vibrator and a Hartmann air-jet generator as sound sources. It soon became evident that neither type was entirely satisfactory. Low mechanical efficiency is an inherent characteristic of magnetostriction generators, and the air-jet generator is difficult to control and does not permit accurate measurement of the acoustic output. The search for a suitable sound source led to the development of an electromagnetic generator, which is by far the most suitable for study of the effects of intensive high-frequency sound fields in gases (6)."

[Inquiries are frequently received by the Bureau of Minas relative to occurrence, mining, treatment and utilization of the natural hydrocarbons' such as gilsonite, elaterate, wurtzilite, grahamite, and ozokerite although have been known and used for many years, they are not yet well understood and the amount of recent literature dealing with them as comparatively small. This paper is intended merely to summarize the present knowledge The natural hydrocarbons included in this series are gilsonite, elaterite, wurtzilite, glance pitch, manjak, grahamite, albertite, arid ozokerite and many other minor varieties. With the exception of ozokerite and the other mineral waxes, then all more or less resemble asphalt in that they are dark brown or black bituminous substances of organic origin, generally with a resinous luster. Ozokerite usually light an color with a waxey luster, is closely allied to the others of the series, but is usually considered separately, Unfortunately authorities differ as to nomenclature so that determinations of physical and chemical properties from different sources may riot be readily compared. Abraham Herbert, Asphalts and Allied Substances, 1918, 606 pp. has made one of the most detailed studies of these subjects in recent years, and his classification is used in the main. The size and accessibility of the Minnesota manganiferous iron ore deposits make them attractive as a potential source of erromanganese, which is essential in the production of steel. For several years the Bureau of Mines has been conducting experiments to determine the feasibility of producing ferromanganese from these ores by a three-step process which involves (1) the smelting of the ores in the blast furnaoe to produce a high-phosphorus spiegel; (2) the treatment of the spiegel produced from step 1 in an electric or open-hearth furnace to separate the manganese from the phosphorus and the iron; and 3) the smelting of the high-manganese slag from step 2 to produce forromanganese. The details of the first two steps of the process and the results of tests with the experimental furnaces Lave been given in previous reports.5 The m$ or part of the experimental work on the second step has been conducted in a half-ton open-hearth furnace. Some preliminary tests showed, however, that the electric furnace has some distinct advantages over the open hearth for producing, from high-phosphorus spiegel, a slag containing from 45 to 55 per cent manganese and phosphorus and iron in amounts required for ferro-grade ore. The electric furnace tests described in this paper were made to get more information as to the possibilities of the electric furnace in connection with this problem and to study the fluxing effect of alumina on high-manganese slags. Herty, Conley, and Royer have reported' results of laboratory tests which showed that slags containing from 60 to 75 per cent MnO, from 8 to 10 per cent S102, and small amounts of CaO MgO, and FeO, were sufficiently fluid at 1,450° to 1,550° C. to pour readily if 12 to 14 per cent alumina was present. Of the common causes of the larger mine accidents, such as falls of roof and coal, gas and dust explosions, mine fires, and the misuse of explosives, all of which are often closely related, each must be studied and fought in a manner peculiar to itself. The last mentioned, the misuse of black powder and other explosives, is sometimes considered the least important of these causes of mine accidents; but its impor- tance is much greater than the statistics indicate, for the reason that the misuse of explosives is the true cause of many of the fatal mine fires, gas or dust explosions, and falls of roof that are credited to other causes. Both the quantity of explosives used and the number of purposes to which they are applied are increasing. They are now made at about 150 plants, in different parts of the United States, and the product of a single year is estimated at nearly 500,000,000 pounds. Nothing in all this material is a safe or "safety" explosive when in the hands of a careless or ignorant person; and this is true whether considered in connection with the shipment or the use of these explosives. In addition to the large losses of life and property resulting from an improper use of explosives in mining, the recent statistics of the railway bureau for the safe transportation of explo- sives have shown more than 400 persons killed or injured and over $3,000,000 worth of property destroyed by explosives in transit by rail. The fact that three years of cooperative effort under the wise supervision of this bureau has reduced these losses to almost nothing encourages the hope that similar cooperative effort may likewise greatly lessen losses of life and property from the use of explosives in mining. The additions to the large death roll of our mines make a recurring appeal to the public for fair treatment of the coal-mining industry, and to the miner and the manager that they join in every possible effort for greater safety. It may never be possible under conditions such as exist to-day to prevent mine accidents entirely. The Bureau of Mines collected coal and coal waste aggregate material from two different mine sites to determine their strength characteristics for use in concrete. The concrete would be placed underground as support walls for ground control in adverse conditions or unique mining applications. A standard mix design was established for a "wet" mix using a water-to-cement (w/c) ratio of 1.0 to facilitate pumping into place. Later, material was collected from four more mine sites and used to make 2-by 2-by 2-ft test blocks with the same w/c ratio. A pull-out cone device and borehole shear tester were used to determine the in situ material strength of the test blocks. These techniques will provide a simple and quick way of determining support wall strength in an underground environment. Test results from the pullout cone de-vice showed a good correlation of 0.98 to test cylinder compressive strengths of the same mix. Results of the borehole shear tester were inconclusive.

The motor gasoline that is being marketed in the United States this summer is slightly more volatile than that sold a year ago. The increase in volatility is shown by a lowering of the distillation temperatures, ranging from 2°F. at the average initial boiling point to 4°F. at the average end point. During the past nine years the Bureau of Mines has made semiannual surveys of the gasoline marketed in the United States, the survey just completed being the eighteenth in the series. The cities in which samples were collected have been chosen as representative of the more important marketing territories, as it is obviously impracticable to obtain a sample of every gasoline sold in the entire country. Samples were collected in Omaha as well as in the 11 cities where samples were taken last winter. It was believed advisable to include samples from Omaha in order to give a better balance to the survey for the country as a whole.

The Bureau of Mines has conducted research on a dual leaching method that offers the potential for the economic recovery of the silver, as well as of the manganese, contained in some domestic manganiferous silver deposits. The method consists of an initial leach of manganese with aqueous sulfur dioxide (S02) followed first by a neutralization rinse, and then by a second leach with cyanide solution for the extraction of silver. Refractory silver in these ores was either (1) intimately associated with the manganese, (2) chemically resistant to cyanide leaching, or (3) rendered inaccessible to cyanide leach solution by the surrounding manganese mineralization. Less than 10 pct of the silver was extracted when minus 2.5-plus 1.3-cm ore pieces were leached directly with cyanide. However, extractions of 25 to 82 pct of the silver and 65 to 96 pet of the manganese were attained in laboratory column-leach tests using the dual leaching method on equivalent-sized ore pieces from seven domestic deposits.

Part 1 summarizes significant accomplishments of the projects that were active during the report period. From time to time the Bureau of Mines has interpreted and applied certain provisions of the Federal Coal Mine Safety Act and Federal Mine Safety Codes, primarily for the guidance of Federal Coal Mine Inspectors. Although interpretations of the Act have appeared in the Federal Register, the Code interpretations and practical applications have not been published. In response to many requests from representatives of the coal-mining industry, the Bureau is publishing this information to promote better understanding of those provisions that may be misinterpreted or misapplied. INTERPRETATIONS AND APPLICATIONS Two Federal Mine Safety Codes are discussed in this report, namely the Federal Mine Safety Code for Bituminous-Coal and Lignite Mines of the United States, Part 1, and the Federal Mine Safety Code, Anthracite Mines of the United States, Part 1. In this circular the word Codes refers to both directives; Code* refers to the code for bituminous-coal and lignite mines; Code? refers to the one for anthracite mines. Act* refers only to bituminous-coal and lignite mines.

This paper describing the dredging operation of J. K. Davison & Bro. on the Allegheny River near Pittsburgh, Pa., is one of a series being prepared for and published by the United States Bureau of Mines on methods and costs of dredging sand and gravel in the United States. These papers are designed to disseminate technical information regarding the methods used. The cost tabulations represent operating expenditures only and not total costs. It is recognized that publication of total costs might in many instances cause embarrassment to individual operators as well as to the industry as a whole. On the other hand, operating costs are essential to the technical discussion and study of the methods employed. The attention of the reader is specifically called to this differentiation in order that no misunderstanding of the scope of the cost tabulations shall ensue. Natural gas was first stored underground in Welland, County, Ontario Province, Canada, in 1915.3/ The following year natural gas in the United States was first stored underground successfully in the Zoar field near Buffalo, N, Y. Only three additional storage fields were in use in the United States in 1930, but by 1940 the number had increased to over 30, and since that time growth has been more rapid. At least 80 fields, with a combined storage capacity of 440,828 MM c. f ., were being utilized by 1949.4 / In May 1952, 142 storage projects having a capacity of 915,000 MM c.f. were in operation .5/ These fields are distributed from New York to California--from Michigan to Texas. In the Appalachian region alone, there are 101 storage fields with a combined capacity exceeding 526,000 MM cu. ft. Why Natural Gas is Stored Natural gas is stored in order to be readily available to meet the needs of consumers.

This report describes the preparation characteristics of the more significant coals in Dickenson County, Va. It is one in a series planned to determine which coals are suitable for the production of metallurgical coke either as mined or after beneficiation. Nearly 4 million tons of coal was produced in Dickenson County in 1955, of which approximately 2.7 million tons was cleaned mechanically in 5 cleaning plants. The Federal Geological Survey has estimated that nearly 1,300 million tons of measured and indicated coal reserves remained in the county as of January 1, 1951.
