This report is a compilation of all information obtained in accordance with the requirements of contracts SO122076 and H0232056. A series of eight coal mines were visited to determine their communications usage and requirements. Presently available equipment was surveyed and evaluated to determine its applicability to the needs of the mines. During the course of an investigation conducted by the fuel section of the Bureau of Mines , on a hand- fired return- tubular boiler plant , it was found that the average cost of fuel to produce 1,000 lb. of steam was $ 0.5287 . Tests conducted after some simple changes had been made in the furnaces , and in the control of the boilers , showed the previous high cost of fuel per 1,000 lb. of steam could be reduced to the reasonable figure of $0.3540 , or the equivalent of over 30 per cent saving in fuel cost .

This report describes investigations conducted by the Bureau of Mines from 1957 through 1959 in the Roseland anorthosite-titanium belt of Nelson and Amherst Counties, Va., for the purpose of studying the titanium resources of the area. Three titanium deposits containing much saprolite ore derived from the decomposition of anorthosite and diorite were selected for detailed study Following a reconnaissance of the reported titanium occurrences in the belt. These three deposits occur in or are associated with anorthosite. Most of the occurrences are situated on or near the contact between the anorthosite and the gneissic country rock. The saprolite deposits are as much as 1.5 miles long, 1,000 feet wide, and 100 teat deep and contain significant reserves of titanium-bearing material estimated in excess of 20 million tons. Where it was penetrated by drilling, the unweathered rock beneath the saprolite contains nearly the same titanium values as the saprolite.

Bench-scale tests were performed by the Federal Bureau of Mines on lignite and subbituminous coal at pressures to 1,000 p.s.i.g. (pounds per square inch gage) in atmospheres of hydrogen or nitrogen to obtain information concerning the influence of pressure on carbonization of normally noncaking coals. The distribution of gaseous, liquid, and solid products as a function of processing pressure was determined. Except for special experiments, the carbonization was at 940° F. In a hydrogen atmosphere above 400 p.s.i.g., agglomeration of the solid residue (especially with lignite) became noticeable and increased directly with the processing pressure. Although in some instances the solid particles fused together, the mechanical strength of the agglomerate was always low. On the basis of visual inspection, the coals agglomerated in the following order of decreasing intensity: (1) Steam-dried lignite; (2) lignite; and (3) subbituminous coal. Addition of lignite tar in quantities to 25 percent by weight of charge did not increase agglomeration or change the carbonization characteristics of the coal.

The mine of the Eureka Standard Consolidated dining Co. is at Dividend, Utah, in the Tintic mining district. It is operated under the same management and controlled by the Antic Standard Mining Co.; the two properties adjoin each other. The Eureka Standard is worked through a vertical shaft; the ore is mined by a stringer-set-and-fill method. One hundred and thirty men were employed in April 1933. The normal daily tonnage is 100 tons; the ore is shipped to the smelter at Garfield, Utah.

Drillability or a measure of drilling performance has been based on ( 1 ) hardness and toughness of rocks , ( 2 ) power input to the drill compared with total volume of hole , and ( 3 ) penetration related to resistive forces of rock on the applied penetrative forces . An analysis of some representative previous work is made . Experimental drillability curves from AX- size diamond core bit performance in eight different rocks ranging from dense hard taconite to soft limestones are presented . Results show that in small bore diamond drilling , compressive strength and possibly other rock properties may be a useful parameter in predicting drilling rates .

Air pollution control regulation$ already implemented or being considered for implementation require substantial investment of capital to remove the sulfur oxides from copper, lead, and zinc smelter gases. There will be an attendant increase in production costs and possibly an associated increase in the price of these metals to the consumer. The total investment and any resultant metal price increase will depend upon the control regulations that ultimately will be adopted by the individual States. Controversy has arisen between the metals industry and governmental control agencies regarding the status of stack gas desulfurization technology and the ability of industry to control sulfur oxide emissions to the degree proposed by some of the more stringent regulations currently under consideration. This paper evaluates the problems involved in achieving various degrees of control over smelter sulfur oxide emissions and the technology available to accomplish the task of assuring clean air. The estimated cost of compliance is reviewed for the copper, zinc, and lead industries, but principal at tent ion is given to the copper situation.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines investigated the separation of heavy rare-earth elements (REE) in an ion-exchange process. An ion-exchange column consisting of two sections, a loading section and a separation section, provides high levels of REE loading and good REE separation with an expected processing cycle of less than a month, while current ion-exchange technology requires more than 5 months. A different resin is used in each section: sulfonic resin in the loading section and iminodiacetic resin in the separation section. The separation section is further divided into two segments: the first conditioned with NH4 and the second with acid. Erbium is loaded onto both segments of the separation column as a retaining ion. Bands of mixed REB eluting between separated bands of pure REB were recycled directly to the column. Without mixed-band recycle, over 80% of the REE eluted from the column was separated into fractions with 99% purity of each element; with such recycle, the percentage of separated elements can be increased to around 90%.

The rapid growth and development of the Soviet coal industry rank the U. S. S. R. with the United States among the leading coal-producing countries. The coal resources of the Soviet Union are among the largest in the world, although coal development has been hindered by the disadvantageous location of the coal deposits with respect to the major consuming centers. Although coal production in the U. S. S. R. reached a record high, the total energy output of mineral fuels in 1957 was still far below that of the United States because a significant part of Soviet coal output was lignites or lower rank coals. Although the Soviet coal industry soon may exceed that of the United States in tons produced, the energy equivalent of Soviet output will be considerably less because of the inclusion of a high percentage of lower rank coals. Energy sources in the United States also involve large quantities of oil and natural gas, whereas coal supplies most primary energy in the Soviet Union.

The disposal of the brines produced with crude petroleum and natural gas has long been a constant source of trouble to oil and gas operators as well as to farmers and stock-raisers in the vicinity of producing fields. The amount of oilfield brines Produced from wells on new properties may be almost negligible, but some older wells may produce several hundred barrels a day. A survey of almost 200 wells on 31 properties in the eastern part of Osage County, Okla., showed that during the month of November, 1928, the average production of water was 3.26 barrels per barrel of oil produced. The age of the wells included in this survey ranged from two to 28 years; the maximum amount of brine produced was 26 barrels of water to one barrel of oil and the lowest was one barrel of water to 27 barrels of oil. These figures apply to a small area. In other fields the production of water also varies widely; for example, in the Cushing4, Okla., field several yells were reported as having produced 100 barrels of water to every barrel of oil produced. Often the production of oil-field brines is decreased materially and the production of petroleum increased by the use of bottom hole Plugs and by a general repair and cementing of wells. The records5 of 22 wells cemented in the Gushing field showed that prior to the repair work, the average total dally production was 242.5 barrels of oil and 3,977.5 barrels of water. The Bureau of Mines actively conducted a well-coordinated research pro- gram during the past fiscal year on problems dealing with the production of oil and gas, transportation of natural gas, chemistry and refining of petrole- um, thermodynamic properties of hydrocarbons, and the processing and utiliza- tion of incombustible helium gas. These particular reserach phases, compris- ing the presently scheduled activities, are integral parts of a broad program selected soon after the war as suitable for Bureau of Mines study, to meet immediate needs for specific information on petroleum and natural-gas problems of national scope. Important progress was made and many technical reports were finished during the year. Several reports were published on gas-condensate production problems, one giving the results of laboratory tests of relative merits of various steels and alloys for rosisting the corrosion that occurs in high-pressure gas- condensate wells. Research was continued, using the Bureau's windowed cell, to determine the characteristics of gas-condensate fluids, and an important paper on the phase relations of these fluids at low temperatures was published. An important part of the Bureau of Mines petroleum production research program for many yoars has been the engineering study of type oil fields. This year reports waro completed on the Lake Creek, Sheridan, and West Rod River fields, Tex.; the Atlanta field, Ark.; and the Bogge field, W.V. Othor fields under study and for which reports will be issued are the Carthage and Now Hope fields, Tex., and the Weber pool, Okla. Spocial studios to determine the characteristics of the oil-gas solutions as they exist within the native reservoir rocks have been in progress in the North Lindsay field, Okla.; the Elk Basin field, Wyo. and Mont.; and the Rangely field, Colo. The North Lindsay study brought to light several un- usual physical proporties of the oil as it is found in this deep-seated reservoir. For instance, its viscosity is less than that of water, and more than 2 barrels of the initial reservoir oil must be produced to yield 1 barrel of "stock-tank oil." In the Elk Basin and Rangoly fields the oil-gas solution varies in composition within the reservoir, depending upon structural location. Engineering studies were continued on woll spacing and on drilling fluids with special emphasis on obtaining uncontaminated cores, or coros for which the flushing action of the drilling fluid can be dotormined accurately. In connection with research on production of oil by secondary recovery methods, progress was made in studies of conditioning water for subsurface injoction, of input ratos and pressures for water-flooding oil sands, and of the selective plugging the more permeable mediurs to prevent or retard channel- ing of the injected fluid. The availability of fuels for all types of internal-combustion engines still is tho primary resoarch project in potroleum chomistry and refining. This rosearch program is subdivided into a sorios of problems under four main topics: (1) Raw-material studios; (2) relationships of fuel consumption, proporties, and performanco; (3) utilization of potroleum products; and (4) analytical mothods, which include chomical and physical property detorminations.

A study of the combustion emission products of rigid ventilation ducting was completed by the U.S. Bureau of Mines. The ducting was composed of fiberglass-reinforced polyester resin. Four properties of the ducting were evaluated: (1) propensity to ignite, (2) smoke characteristics, (3) gas emissions, and (4) heat release. Particle sizes, obscuration, optical densities, and production constants for gas and smoke were also calculated. These results provide comprehensive data about the emission products, detectability, and relative hazards of fiberglass-reinforced plastic ducting and other mine combustibles under realistic fire conditions.

The widespread adoption during the past decade of the dense-medium process for cleaning coal increases the need for technologic studies of the process. Such studies provide information that will insure maximum usefulness of this process in its present form and may well lead to substantial improvements in design and opera¬tion. The Bureau of Mines has published the results of cleaning trials on a wide variety of coals in two dense-medium pilot plants5/ and reported the recovery of coal from waste by dense-medium treatment.6./ The present report deals with the viscosity of magnetite dense medium, an important subject about which virtually nothing has been published. Specifically, the report concerns methods for measuring viscosity, the influence of various medium contaminants on viscosity, the effect of viscosity on cleaning results, and the influence of viscosity on consumption of medium. Cleaning trials on four coals of varied density composition in a pilot plant, using mediums of different viscosities, showed a steady reduction in cleaning efficiency with increasing viscosity in every instance. However, the behavior of each coal in a viscous medium was distinctly individual. With one, an increase of only 1 centipoise in viscosity caused a reduction in recovery efficiency of 7.7 percent, whereas the same increase in viscosity with another reduced recovery efficiency only 2.7 percent.

This report describes hydrogenation of petroleum distillate fuels in bench scale equipment and the effects of hydrogenation on the storage stability and the composition of the fuels. Two distillate fuels were hydrogenated in laboratory equipment using a commercially available cobalt molybdate catalyst. Reactor temperatures were varied from 600° to 850° F and pressures from 100 to 600 psig. Product fuels were analyzed by ASTM, Bureau of Mines, mass, and infrared methods. Hydrogenation of a catalytically cracked fuel from Oklahoma crude oil significantly improved the storage stability, reducing insoluble gum formed during 9 months of storage at 110° F from 19.0 to 1.3 mg per 100 ml fuel, average. Conversion of the olefins to other hydrocarbon types varied with the temperature of hydrogenation--at 700° to 850° F the conversion was mainly to aromatics, at 650° F about 50:50 to saturates and aromatics, at 600° F principally to saturates. Processing a fuel composed of a mixture of virgin distillate and catalytically cracked stock, both from Illinois crude, at 700° F and 200 psig effected marked improvement in stability; the buildup of insoluble gum in storage was lowered from 18.3 to less than 1 mg per 100 ml fuel.

The synthetic fluormicas may be divided on the basis of silicon content into tetrasilicic, trisilicic, and disilicic. Properties of lead and barium disilicic fluormicas were determined to characterize these two representative members of the disilicic group. Properties described include unit-cell parameters from X-ray diffraction, optical data, chemical composition, density, melting point, and mechanical and dielectric properties. Both the lead and the barium micas were typically monoclinic; neither was sufficiently cleavable to yield usable mica splittings. Both yielded polycrystalline, machinable ceramics with excellent mechanical and dielectric properties.

Approximately 6,000 coal mines are operated in the United States. All of them have in some degree the elements that are likely to contribute to an explosion, hence it is surprising that explosion disasters are not more frequent and that many mines have been operated for years and finally worked out and abandoned without experiencing an explosion. The absence of coal-mine explosions does not always indicate that effective efforts have been made to prevent them but rather that the nine has been fortunate in that the combination of circumstances necessary to cause an explosion has not existed. In view of present knowledge of the methods of preventing explosions, disasters are inexcusable and discredit the mining industry. The methods of preventing mine explosions are known to experienced, well-informed persons engaged in coal mining, yet despite this knowledge far to many coal-mine operators continue to use practices and methods that they should know have resulted in numerous explosions. Moreover, many mine workers persist in following past procedure irrespective of consequences and in breaking safety rules or indulging in practices almost certain eventually to result in disaster. Continued failure to apply known common-sense methods of accident and explosion prevention unquestionably will cell for ultimate enforcement of law.

"Based on contact-angle measurements and the work of adhesion equation, the hydrophobicity of a wide variety of coals was found to decrease with decreasing rank, fixed carbon and total carbon content and with increasing oxygen and hydroxyl content. The estimated hydrophobicity, based on the water-sessile-drop contact angle, is '\.. 20% for lignite, increases with increasing rank up to a maximum of 'V70% for low (LV) and medium (MV) volatile bituminous coals and then decreases somewhat for anthracite. Using the captive-bubble technique, the calculated hydrophobicity ranges from '\.. 0% (below HV A bituminous rank) to a maximum of 55% for L V-MV coal. The former estimation is believed to be the more accurate. While the water-sessile-drop contact angle as measured on a polished-coal surface is usually larger than that shown by the captive-bubble method, the two values were found to converge at""' 95% relative humidity. It is proposed that the surface of coal consists of three kinds of sites: strongly hydrophobic, weakly hydrophobic and hydrophilic. The sessile-drop technique measures the total hydrophobic sites whereas the captive-bubble method measures only the more strongly hydrophobic sites. A water film covers the weakly hydrophobic sites preventing their detection by the captive-bubble technique.INTRODUCTIONCoal is a mixture of the degradation products of plants and of mineral matter. The appearance and properties of a specific coal is determined by the nature of the original vegetation and the extent of the physical and chemical changes which have occurred after deposition. The coalification process may be considered to have started with peat formation followed by a transition to lignite due to burial under sediments and metamorphic processes. Further metamorphic transformation to bituminous coals and, finally, under intense metamorphic action, to anthracite causes the carbon content and rank of the coal to increase. With such a wide variation in their genesis and composition, equally wide variations in the degree of hydrophobicity of different coals may be expected. It is the purpose of this paper to provide a means of estimating the hydrophobicity of a given coal sample based on rank parameters."

A laboratory furnace was developed by the Federal Bureau of Mines for use in studying the interrelationships among variables associated with skull melting and casting high-temperature metals. Although additional work is necessary to determine the extent to which the information obtained by using this furnace can be extrapolated to larger furnaces of the same type, many casting characteristics of metals and alloys can be determined on equipment of this size. This furnace is a laboratory-size, consumable-electrode, skull-casting furnace equipped with a water-cooled copper ladle. The ladle, which is a tilt-pour or over-the-lip type, has a volume of approximately 30 cubic inches and provides up to 20 cubic inches of molten metal for castings. Castings of various reactive and refractory metals, including zirconium, titanium, hafnium, columbium, molybdenum, tantalum, and tungsten, have been produced. In addition, castings of iron, chromium, and copper have been made. The simplicity and versatility of the apparatus would make it useful to metallurgical laboratories preparing cast specimens.

Preliminary studies showed that direct hydrolysis of H2SiF6 to SiO2 and HF at elevated temperatures was subject to many mechanical difficulties, and that corrosion of construction materials was a serious problem. Elimination of SiO2 from the HF product was generally poor. An alternative procedure, hydrolysis of lime-neutralized H2SiF6 by steam at 950° to 1,100° C, yielded a product very low in SiO2. Condensates containing up to 300 g/1 HF were prepared.

The Oronogo-Webb City-Duenweg district is in the northeastern part of the Tri-State zinc and, lead field. Its metal-mining history dates from the early 1850's. For some years prior to 1918 it ranked as the leading producing area of the entire Tri-State field, but by 1920 most of its mines had been abandoned and allowed to fill with water. Its mine operators had-been attracted, to the newly discovered and richer deposits around Picher, Okla. In 1943, the Orenogo Mutual Mining Co. was exploiting the Oronogo Circle deposit in the northern end of the district, and the Federal Mining & Smelting Co. was preparing to mine on its holdings in the southern part near Duenweg. The area between these two operating units ranked as the largest single block of ore reserves under water in the Tri-State field. In 1942, engineers of the Bureau of Mines, in collaboration with the William Stewart Engineering Co. of Joplin, collected all available mine maps, mine reports, and logs of old drill holes in the inundated area. From a careful study an appraisal of these data, the reserves in the block were calculated at 20,647,800 tons of ore containing 606,440 tons of 60-percent zinc concentrates and 46,970 tons of 80-percent lead concentrates. The ore was estimated to contain 1.76 percent recoverable zinc and 0.18 percent recoverable lead.
