This paper is one of a series being prepared by the United States Bureau of Mines describing clay and shale mining and crushing methods and costs at various operations throughout the United States. These papers are designed to disseminate technical information regarding methods used. The cost tabulations represent local operating expenditures only and not total production costs. It is recognized that publication of total production costs may, in many instances, cause embarrassment to the individual operator as well as to the industry as a whole. On the other hand, it is essential to the technical discussion and study of methods employed to consider operating costs. The attention of the reader is specifically called to this differentiation in order that no misunderstanding of the scone of the cost tabulations shale ensue. The open-pit recovery of clay and shale is a comparatively simple operation in comparison with underground mining; nevertheless, it represents an appreciable factor in the cost of manufacture.

1. The investigation shows that the Sewanee bed is the only bed of major importance in Marion County, 97 percent of the coal mined in the county having come from this bed. There are coal reserves in minor quantity in the Battle Creek bed, and production from this bed depends on a few small truck mines. The Richland bed, or Lower Sewanee, has been mined in the past, but no coal has been produced from it in late years. There are no production records of any other beds in the county, although same coal has been produced from them. 2. Known measured and indicated reserves in all beds, based on a minimum thickness of 14 inches and on 1,800 tons per acre-foot of coal in place, are estimated to be 61 million short tons as of January 1, 1953. Of this total, 55 million short tons is in beds 28 inches and more thick. Areas in each bed were omitted from the estimate where available data relative to the bed characteristics are too meager to permit making an estimate that conforms with the definitions of measured and indicated coal adopted for this study. Should future drilling or development prove reserves in these areas, such reserves should be added to the total estimated reserves.

The annual reports of the research and technologic investigations conducted by the Bureau of Mines on the occurrence, properties, mining preparation, and uses of coal, of which the present report is the seventh,4/ are intended to be brief summaries of progress. They are guides to the current work and publications of the Bureau but do not replace the more complete reports published by individuals and groups of workers on specific problems. The annual reports present the results of tests, often in advance of publication in other forms, but original contributions in research are reserved for initial publication by their authors. A survey of the accomplishments of the Bureau in research and technologic work on coal during the 5 year period 1935-40 has been made available in the form of a bibliography.5/ This supplements a similar bibliography on this subject that covers the first 25 years of the Bureau, 1910-35.6/

This paper, describing the milling methods at the concentrator of the Premier Gold Mining Co., Ltd., Premier, B. "Black powder is employed widely in peace and war. Its properties are therefore of considerable interest to many. The Bureau of Mines frequently is asked to furnish information on its use and safe handling in the mining and mineral industries in times of peace and is now engaged in studies of its application to the arts of war.Black powder has been the agent in many accidents - some very disastrous - and its handling and use are deemed very hazardous. The belief is widespread that the hazards are due principally to the ease with which the powder is ignited by a hot spark or flame in contradistinction to high explosives; these usually are ignited only with difficulty, and some burn incompl0tely and to a certain extent are self-extinguishing. Primary precautions, .therefore, should be taken to prevent the access of heat, spark, and flame.In black powder manufacturing operations a frequent source of disaster is the initiation of fires and explosions in the wheel mills in which the sulfur, charcoal, and nitrate are incorporated. Long experience has indicated that the wheel mill probably will fire if the powder is not kept moist enough; manufacturing supervision calls for the maintenance of a minimum moisture content, at least during the milling. Accidents occur elsewhere in the manufacturing line, and in an endeavor to minimize these, particularly those happening in corning mills, one of the writers suggested many years ago that a suitable humidity be maintained in other operations in the hope that it would serve protectively as in the wheel mill. The experience of one company for many years with this practice was favorable. It seemed desirable therefore, to explore the question experimentally."

This report summarizes work performed under USBM Contract No. J0100047 revealing the performance characteristics of a composite-type resilient screen deck. The ability of the composite to perform or compete with steel in noise attenuation and longevity was of interest. Tests were conducted at the River King Preparation Plant of Peabody Coal Company. This facility was chosen because it provided parallel process flow and met standard coal cleaning requirements. Comparisons could be made between the adjacent resilient and steel screen decks under similar operating conditions. Noise reductions of 1-6 dBA were realized in the near field. Although the test period did not determine resilient screen life, indications are favorable for their longevity.

From the standpoint of tonnage and dollar value copper is the most important nonferrous metal mined in North America. The opening of copper mines has had an important bearing on the development and settlement of many sections of the continent. The prosperity of many of the mining States or provinces depends directly upon the copper-mining industry. Normally, about 35,000 men are employed in the copper mines, mills, and smelters of the United States. The United States is the most important producer of copper among the nations; more copper is mined in North America than in any other continent, and for many years the United States alone produced about half of the copper of the world. During the last 10 years increasing production in South America and Africa has reduced the relative importance of North America and the United States.

The effects of impurity elements silicon , aluminum, copper , nitrogen , and manganese , at 50 to 300 ppm, on properties of the zirconium alloy Zircaloy 2 were investigated . Variations in microstructure , mechanical properties , and corrosion behavior in some inorganic acid and salt solutions were observed with variations in level of impurity element . Corrodents were solutions of sulfuric acid , phosphoric acid , copper chloride , and iron chloride . Silicon was found to modify annealed microstructures by spheroidizing and dispersion of secondphase material throughout grains . Silicon or manganese improved ultimate and yield strength of the alloy without loss in ductility . All five elements affected corrosion rates of the alloy , the effect being generally different for each element .

This report describes work done in the Creede Mining district, Mineral County, Colo., in 1965-66 as a part of a Bureau of Mines study of the silver production potential of the United States. The ruining history of the district is briefly covered, and representative former and current mining operations are described. Mining and milling costs of the Emperius Mining Company's operation are given in some detail as being representative of the cost of mining typical Creede ore bodies under current technology. An estimate of the silver reserves and resources of the district is presented, subject to many uncertainties stemming from inaccessibility of old workings, lack of mining records, and low level exploration activity, all of which limit the opportunity to accurately evaluate ore potential. The report concludes with an analysis of future silver production trends in the Creede district. An increase of silver production to as much as I million ounces yearly is projected, possibly starting in 1969. As long as ore bodies in the zone of enrichment, in which silver is a major constituent, contribute a substantial part of Creede production, silver price will affect overall production rates appreciably. As the richer are bodies become depleted, an increasing portion of production again will be coming from primary sulfide ores in which silver is a byproduct of lead and zinc. When this occurs, the level of silver production will be governed chiefly by lead and zinc production and prices and can be expected to decline to the 1960-66 level, which amounts to an average of 240,000 ounces per year.

The object of this program was to extend the capabilities of visual paging systems both in size and function. The system developed uses the mine pager phone line for communication, monitoring, and remote control. A central station, using a minicomputer, transmits signals by phase inversion modulation of a 16,384 Hz carrier to as many as 999 remote units. The remote unit addressed returns An echo to indicate that it is functioning and, in the case of monitor units, to convey the monitor data. Magnetically latched display dis[c]s, which can be seen from both sides when posted, are used for visual paging. Lists of the addresses of posted pages, unanswered pages, and non-echoing units are prepared by the central station computer. The system was designed to be intrinsically safe and should operate for three months on a 12-volt lantern battery.

The Mining Division of the Bureau of Mines has been making development and power-requirement studios for the Interior Department Missouri Basin Field. Committee. The studies by the Bureau of Mines have as their purpose, the summarizing of potential future power requirements in the mineral industry within the Missouri Basin, special emphasis being placed on possible expansion of these requirements through construction of new mining enterprises by private capital. In preparing a proposal for the production of phosphoric acid from phosphate rock near Lander, Wyo., it was found that the basic information on the physical and chemical characteristics of the phosphate beds to determine costs of mining and treatment was lacking.

The Bureau of Mines studied single - step catalytic vapor - phase hydrogenation of oils derived from coal and oil shale . Treatment of middle oil , from hydrogenation of bituminous coal , gave good yields of gasoline with a German - made molybdenum- zinc - chromium catalyst . The Bureau also achieved good results with duplicates of this catalyst made from domestic raw materials . In one set of experiments with the German catalyst , 38 to 52 wt pct of feed was converted to gasoline . The total liquid product was 91 to 98 wt pct of the feed . Not all this gasoline can be claimed as production , however , because about 20 pct of the feed was in the gasoline range , and part of it undoubtedly survived the hydrocracking treatment . Hydrogenation of crude shale oil in the presence of cobalt molybdate catalyst produced a total liquid product of 89 wt pct of feed . The hydrogenation converted 27 wt pct of feed to gasoline and 44 wt pct of feed to diesel fuel . The remaining liquid product , 18 wt pct of feed , was residue boiling above diesel fuel . The gasoline was of poor quality , with an octane number of 39.1 . The overall product seemed a suitable feed stock for a conventional refining operation . Coker distillate hydrogenation , using a cobalt molybdate catalyst , gave a total liquid product of 97 vol pct of feed ; of this product 60 vol pct was jet fuel and 40 vol pct was diesel fuel . This Information Circular covers States west of the Mississippi, and Information Circular 8704 covers States east of the Mississippi. These data replace previously published compilations of energy consumption statistics by States and districts. Future annual studies are planned using the same Btu conversion factors applied in these two Information Circulars.

Hydrogen sulphide associated with the gasps and vapors from certain crude oils now produced in the United States has forced a serious health and safety problem upon the petroleum industry. Although the presence of hydrogen sulphide in or occurring with Mexican crudes has been known for some time, it was not until recently that crude oils which give off poisonous amounts of hydrogen sulphide have been produced to any extent in the United State. The injurious effects of this poisonous gas were first recognized by the refiners along; the Atlantic and Gulf Coasts upon receiving shipments of crude petroleum from Mexico. The problem of combating the hazards of the gases and vapors given off by this petroleum become more important as the use of Mexican crude increased. In 1925, the Bureau of Mines and Public Health Service under cooperative agreement with the American Petroleum Institute, studied the causes rend effects of hydrogen sulphide poisoning. Bureau of Mines Bulletin 2312 is report of this investigation, and although written with special reference to refineries, it nevertheless contains much information that is of value to the producer of petroleum.

This report on research and experimentation by the Federal Bureau of Mines on technologic and scientific problems of the petroleum and natural gas industries presents a resume of work from July 1, 1953, to June 30, 1956. The preceding report, for the fiscal year ended June 30, 1953,3/ indicated continuation of the Bureau's program of petroleum and natural gas research of world-wide significance, which began in 1910. The petroleum and natural gas research of the Bureau of Mines is divided into five main categories: (1) Production of petroleum and natural gas, (2) transportation and storage, (3) petroleum chemistry and refining, (4) thermodynamics, and (5) economics.

Upgrading of commercial red cake and recovery of vanadium oxide from uranium-vanadium mill solutions were investigated by the Bureau of Mines. Alternative procedures potentially useful for manufacture of high-quality vanadium oxide at the mill site were explored and developed. The simplest and best procedure for converting commercial red cake containing about 10 percent combined sodium and potassium oxides (Na20) (K20) into a 98- to 99-percent vanadium pentoxide (V205 product appeared to be a metathesis in an ammoniacal solution of ammonium sulfate. Molybdenum, as well as the alkali metal oxides, was removed from the red cake by this procedure at a modest expenditure of labor and reagents. When preparing vanadium oxide of higher grade, it was necessary to dissolve the red cake and reprecipitate the vanadium as ammonium metavanadate. Calcination at 450° C, decomposed the metavanadate and yielded oxide of about 99.5 percent V205. By recyrstallizing the metavanadate before decomposition, an oxide product approaching 99.9-percent purity was obtained.

The Bureau of Mines studied the cutting characteristics of point-attack bits to reduce airborne respirable dust and energy during cutting. Linear cutting of two coal types using four bit types at three depths of cut with three space-depth ratios was performed with a modified horizontal milling machine using an optical particle-size monitor for respirable dust sampling. The cutting action of one bit on a rotary hardhead mining machine was mathematically analyzed and compared with the results of the linear cutting test. Airborne respirable dust per unit mass cut (specific dust) was found to be a monotonically increasing function of specific energy. Specific dust and energy decrease with increasing depth of cut. The amount of nonairborne respirable dust was 100 to 1,000 times greater than the airborne dust. The plumb-bob bit produced the most airborne respirable dust and the highest specific energy of the four bits tested. Rotary cutting was a greater dust producer and energy consumer than linear cutting because of the constantly changing depth of cut, space-depth ratio, and attack angle of the bit relative to the horizontal bedding planes. A new cutting technique is proposed to minimize the existing problems of the rotary cutting machines by providing greater production, reduced dust, and minimized methane ignition potential at the face.

The Bureau of Mines continued its research into the recovery of fluorine by the phosphoric acid acidulation defluorination of phosphate rock concentrates. A small process development unit with a capacity of about 10 kilo-grams of charge per hour was operated, and concentrates from both Idaho and Florida were processed. Over 80 percent of the fluorine was evolved and recovered as a dilute fluosilicic acid solution. Phosphate extraction from the concentrates always exceeded 98 percent. The fluorine was converted to a synthetic fluorspar product (3CaFa?SiOa) suitable for use as a slag conditioner in electric furnace steelmaking operations.

This report describes the preparation characteristics of the more significant coalbeds in Monongalia County, W. Va. It is one of a Bureau of Mines series planned to determine coals suitable for producing metallurgical coke, either as mined or after beneficiation. Over 9.5 million tons of coal was produced in Monongalia County in 1957, of which more than 7 million tons was cleaned mechanically in 8 cleaning plants. On January I, 1954 the Bureau of Mines estimated that 1,576 million tons of recoverable coal remained in the county in beds 28 inches or more thick.
