"INTRODUCTION Mica is found in Georgia from the Fall Line in the central part of the State to the Valley and Ridge Province in the northwest. During the past 3 years, Georgia has been one of the chief producers of dielectric mica in the United States. Since January 1945, when prices were reduced, mining has decreased until practically no sheet mica is being recovered at present.The main mica-bearing regions in the State may be classified into three districts: The Thomaston district comprising Upson, Lamar, and Monroe Counties; the Ball Ground district, comprising Cherokee and Pickens Counties; and the Hartwell district, comprising Hart and Elbert Counties. There are numerous mines and prospects in all of these districts. All have been visited from time to time by engineers of the Bureau of Mines and by members of the Federal Geological Survey. The Federal Survey has made detailed maps and reports on all of the most important ones.This report will deal with five of these properties on which the Bureau of Mines has diamond-drilled.ACKNOWLEDGMENTSIn its program of investigation of mineral deposits, the Bureau of Mines has as its primary objective the more effective utilization of our mineral resources to the end that they make the greatest possible contribution to national security and economy. This report describes the sinking of No. 3 shaft at the Westvaco mine. It is one of a series of publications of the Bureau of Mines on mining methods and practices in the United States. The Westvaco mine is in Sweetwater County, Wyo., approximately 23 miles northwest of the town of Green River (fig. I), There are no permanent habitations in the vicinity of the mine, and employees live in Green River or Rock Springs, Wyo., 14 miles us t of Green River. The mine plant is on a windswept, treeless plain, from which low buttes and flat-topped ridges rise. The altitude at the collar of No. 3 shaft is 6,351 feet. The climate is arid, with temperatures as low as 40° below zero in the winter. Blacks Fork, a tributary of the Green River and a perennial stream, flows near the mine.

To demonstrate the feasibility of unwatering ore reserves previously indicated in the virgin Melrose zinc-lead field in Kansas and Oklahoma, the Bureau of Mines .carried through a pumping project on the Park Walton farm in 1943. Due to success of the undertaking, attention was turned to exploration of other indicated ore deposits and promising areas within that part of the field benefited by .the drainage project, By the middle of 1946, four private mining companies were active in the field; and a considerable output of lead and zinc concentrate had been obtained from the new Park Walton mine and mill. The Park Walton Ore deposit was unwatered by installing deep-well pumps in three holes previously drilled by the lessee. Pumping was continued by the Bureau of Mines at a rate of 2,500 to 1,000 g.p.m. for about 6 months; during this time the local static artesian water-level, originally averaging 108 feet below the surface in the old drill holes was lowered to the 316-foot level, which justified beginning the initial shaft sinking and mine developments. In all, about 750,000,000 gallons of water was pumped by the Bureau of Mines at an operating cost averaging $0.024 per 1,000 gallons.

"Contained in this chapter is a listing of the publications and reference books which have come about as a result of respirable dust research performed by faculty, staff and graduate students in the Generic Mineral Technology Center for Respirable Dust at The Pennsylvania State University, West Virginia University, University of Minnesota, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and Michigan Technological University. These publications have appeared in scientific journals, proceedings of the national and international symposiums, and professional meetings. Complete citations of the publications can be found in Volumes 3 through 6 and Volume 8 of this series. The agenda of the last annual GMTC seminar, held at West Virginia University on February 1 - 2, 1988, follows. The project presentations are organized under the five research areas. All projects currently active were presented to the Advisory Committee. New project submissions were not. The authors were allotted thirteen (13) minutes for their presentations; the remainder of the twenty (20) minutes allotted for each project was used for introductions, transitions, and questioning by the Advisory Committee. Each author used a standard format for presentation of his/her materials for review; handout materials were distributed to the Advisory Committee for reference. Opening remarks were made by Dr. Richard Bajura of West Virginia University and Dean Robert L. Frantz and Dr. Raja V. Ramani of The Pennsylvania State University.The Generic Mineral Technology Center for Respirable Dust is funded by the U.S. Bureau of Mines through the Mining and Mineral Resources Research Institute Program. This report describes in detail the circuitry used in the Automated Time Domain Reflectometry System and the testing and modification done to the system to improve the units performance and consistency. The analog ATDR software is described and explained in detail. Also attempts to implement the same Assembly Language program in a higher level language (PLM) are documented along `h two versions of the PLM program - one which uses a data filtering approach to limit noise and another which uses data averaging to reduce noise. The field testing of the analog and digital ATDR units is described along with the hardware modifications that resulted. The analog unit has been abandoned and the digital unit adopted for most field tests. Tests indicate that the digital units are much more consistent and less confusing for the lay-person to operate. The results indicate that the it can locate an abnormality in a test cable to within 5% of the true location (provided the cable phase velocity is known). The units can consistently locate shunt type faults which are less than 300 ohms and series type faults which are greater than 30 ohms.

Cancrinite is one eonstituentof "red muds," a high-volume waste product of alumina production by the Bayer process. The Bureau of Mines determined the thermochemical properties of cancrinite as part of a program to provide such data for minerals of industrial importance. Cancrinite [Na7.68(A16Si6024)(N03)1.68 (H2O)4.1] was synthesized by reacting aluminum silicate gel with a solution of NaOH and NaN03, and the composition was determined by chemical analysis, differential scanning calorimetry, and thermogravimetric analysis. The heat of solution was determined by hydrofluoric acid solution calorimetry. The standard enthalpy of formation at 298.15 K, ?Hf°298, is ?Hf°298 = -3,487.97 ±2.6 kcal/mol, and the standard enthalpy of formation from the oxides and NaN03, ?H°298, is ?H°298 = -215.20 ±l.8 kcal/mol.

This report covers the third and final year of work conducted under U. S. Bureau of Mines Grant G0166027, "Monitoring of Mine Air Pollutants". The report discusses work performed in three areas. These are the White Pine Mine (WPM) Experimental Unit, diesel mine-vehicle tailpipe emissions monitoring, and mine ambient air concentration data analysis. The WPM experimental unit was used to study diesel exhaust stratification in an 80 foot long dead-end heading while loading ore with a Wagner ST-5D scoop train LHD. The MTU Mine Air Monitoring Laboratory (MAML) was used to gather temperature and CO2 concentration data at 10 locations. Three different ventilation conditions were compared. The data substantiate the presence of strong buoyant forces of the hot exhaust gases which result in temperature stratification in dead-end headings. The diesel mine-vehicle tailpipe emissions monitoring study involved laboratory measurements of diesel undiluted exhaust pollutant concentrations by the portable tailpipe emissions measurement apparatus (EMA) assembled for in-mine use. The results were compared with simultaneous measurements by standard laboratory exhaust monitoring instruments. These results indicate that accurate field source quality control measurements can be obtained for CO2, CO and NO but NO2 results were low for all engine conditions. The mine ambient air concentration data analysis study included analysis of diesel pollutant concentration data in the Orchard Valley Mine air and comparison of the results with data collected earlier in the White Pine and Brushy Creek mines. The analysis included preparation of lognormal frequency distributions and calculations of C02-based concentration ratios and correlations. In the three mines compared, pollutant concentrations are distributed quite similarly, and the concentrations appear to be controlled to present standards.

"INTRODUCTION The use of wet drilling with adequate ventilation has largely controlled production of dust in drilling rock; however, in some operations, such as shaft sinking and modern tunnel driving, when each of a number of drills is operating in a small cross-sectional area, it is at times difficult to ventilate well enough to keep the dust concentration within desired limits.Some chemical compounds, known as wetting agents, when added to water in small quantities reduce the interfacial tension and make it possible for the solution to wet dust particles more effectively than water alone.This report presents results of tests on the effectiveness of two wetting solutions in reducing the amount of dust produced by wet drilling in basalt.ACKNOWLEDGMENTSThe tests were conducted the Bureau's Mount 'Weather Testing Adit,Mount Weather, The author acknowledges the assistance and cooperation of Wing G. The performances of four anthracite-burning stokers have been observed under identical 74-hp. steam boilers. Fifty runs of 12 and 24 hours' duration were made in accordance with the test code of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME). The capacity of each stoker for burning anthracite has been determined, the heat efficiency at each fuel rate has been computed, and the various significant items of hear loss have been estimated. The operating data and results from each run are tabulated in this report in the form used in the test code. The heat efficiencies and most significant operating data for each run are also presented graphically for each stoker to establish the trends with increasing boiler outputs, The tests show that rice anthracite can be burned on stokers adapted to its use at heat-conversion efficiencies of 82 percent or more under continuous firing. These high efficiencies are maintained with fuel inputs 30 percent higher and lower than the peak efficiency rate. Moreover, a heat efficiency of 70 percent or more is obtained at 50 percent of the optimum fuel rate, even though the excess air into the furnace cannot be held below 150 percent.

The following report is made through the Bureau of Mines as a result of the work under the cooperative agreement with the State geological survey and the engineering experiment station of the University of Illinois. It deals with the use of permissible explosives in the coal mines of Illinois, and is intended primarily to present to mining men the possibility of assuring safer conditions in mining through the use of these explosives. Twenty coal mines in Illinois were using these relatively safe explosives at the time this report was prepared. Of these, seventeen were in Franklin County, two were in Saline County, and one in Montgomery County. In these various fields experience had shown that although black blasting powder was a useful agent in breaking down the coal at the working face, yet it had given such conclusive evidence of its danger to life and property in causing explosions and mine fires that a substitute was sought and has been found in permissible explosives. Each coal mine in Illinois in which permissible explosives are used was visited and a study made of the problems involved. The report deals briefly with the dangers of black blasting powder now in such common use in coal mining. It discusses the development of permissible explosives and their introduction into Illinois coal mines and points out the characteristic differences between permissible explosives and black blasting powder. The present system of blasting and the most approved methods of using permissible explosives are described. Data are given to show that not only has safety and efficiency in these mines been greatly improved, but that the cost of explosives to the miner per ton of coal has been reduced, and that sizes of coal produced from permissible explosives compare favorably with those previously obtained at the same mines with black blasting powder. The successful use of permissible explosives in these Illinois mines as well as in many other mines throughout the country should aid in their introduction into a larger number of mines and bring about that degree of freedom from explosions and fires which should be attained in mining.

One of the best present-day yardsticks of the material welfare of a nation is its consumption of minerals, The United States, with only 7 percent of the world population, consumes 45 percent of the world wealth, pays the highest real wages, has the shortest working hours, and numbers the largest percentages of home owners among its population, and at the same time its per-capita consumption of minerals is far greater than that of any other nation. In 1937, British India, with roughly twice the population of the United States, used less than 2 percent as much lead, 4 percent as muck zinc, and 13 percent as much copper; even in Europe, which has three times our population and where war preparations have greatly expanded the normal needs of peaceful industries, the aggregate consumption of metals and industrial minerals other than lignite is less than the total for the United States alone. The march of civilization passed from the Stone Age to the Bronze Age before the dawn of history. It may be questioned whether man or monkey first threw stones at an enemy, but only man could have fashioned rough stones into weapons. Eoliths rudely shaped by apelike men are believed by archaeologists to have antedated by hundreds of thousands of years the existence of our own human ancestors. The primitive people that followed the retreating Ice Cap northward in early quaternary period - at least a million years ago - were fairly adept in the shaping of flints and even used a little copper. The Bronze Age, so-called, superseded the Stone Age when, around 8,000 B. C., the news spread that chunk s of natural copper could be pounded into better weapons or cutting implements than ever could be made by chipping stones. The Bronze Age gave place to the Iron Age about 1,000 B, C., and though students of modern history may speak of the Coal Age, the Petroleum Age, and the Automobile Age, and so on, these ages have all been crowded into a brief century and a half. The truth is that we still are in the Iron Age, unless perhaps we choose to call it the Age of Many Metals.

The Tennessee Copper Co. operated two mines in the Ducktown district during 1928. The Burra Burra mine is much the larger operation and is the chief source of the ore smelted and treated in the, company's smelter and acid plant rat Copperhill, 4.5 miles from Ducktown. This mine operates steadily and furnishes a regular output of about 40,000 tons per month. The Eureka mine is operated irregularly and produces a much smaller tonnage of high-sulphur ore the rate of output depending upon the demand for sulphur. During 1928 about 60 per cent of the combined output of these mines was shipped directly to the smelter, and the balance was concentrated before shipment in the flotation plant located near the mines. A shaft or slope bottom is that portion of a mine that is contiguous to the bottom of the main hoisting shaft or slope. It includes the terminal tracks for loaded-and empty-car storage, locomotive run-arounds, locomotive shops, charging stalls, supply rooms, pump rooms, waiting rooms, and offices for dispatcher, weighmen, and foremen. This paper will deal principally with the arrangement of tracks and the handling of cars on the bottom, but includes other data that may be affected, directly or indirectly, by the bottom lay-out. All of the mines discussed are being operated in comparatively level coal seams.

"INTRODUCTION The Edison mine comprises workings on two irregular spodumene-bearing pegmatite dikes which outcrop near the town of Keystone in the southern portion of the Black Hills of South Dakota. The Bureau of Mines conducted an investigation of the Edison mine as part of a comprehensive study of the lithium mineral-production possibilities in the Black Hills area. The work was undertaken during the Second World War, when the demand for certain lithium salts and compounds exceeded the then small productive capacity of the industry.During the course of the project, the Bureau of Mines completed 13 diamond core-drill holes, aggregating 2,114.5 feet of drilling. Twenty-six cannel samples were taken from the main Edison shaft, and 13 miscellaneous samples were obtained to permit analysis of the efficiency of phases of mining and sorting operations. Metallurgical tests were made by the Bureau of Mines to investigate the feasibility of beneficiating spodumere-bearing ores from the Edison mine. 3/"

In the first half of 1990, lessening of cold war tensions was welcome. But Iraq's invasion of Kuwait in August led to the Persian Gulf War in January and February 1991. The subsequent oil shock contributed to a dampening of the U.S. economy, and the U.S. gross national product rose only 0.9 % to $5,463 billion (U.S. billion = 109). The buildup of military forces in the Persian Gulf area focused greater attention not only on petroleum but also on other strategic materials. The U.S. Department of Defense continued to review stockpile goals and upgrade several mineral materials. In addition, the U.S. Bureau of Mines continued to maintain the standby Emergency Minerals Administration. After the Defense Production Act, which authorizes priorities, allocations, and supply expansion, lapsed on October 20, 1990, the Selective Service Act of 1967 became the authority to ensure that orders of the Armed Forces and defense atomic energy programs were given priority treatment.

The National Safety Competition was inaugurated in 1925 by the Bureau o1 Mines, U.S. Department of the Interior, in cooperation With the Explosives Engineer. In the first nationwide contest, 210 mines and quarries were enrolled. In 1962, the thirty-eighth anniversary of the competition, 910 mines and quarries were enrolled. These participating plants were worked a total of 133,292,989 man-hours. Of the enrolled plants, 415 achieved injury-free operations tar the year, the largest number of perfect safety records in the history of the contest. In 1961 and 1962, the National Safety Competition was conducted and sponsored by the Bureau of Mines. In January 1963, the American Mining Congress became a cosponsor and participated with the Bureau in the award activities related to the 1962 contest. The basic purpose of the competition is to stimulate employees to work safely and too give impetus to the building of better accident-prevention programs. A well-designed and efficient safety program helps a company economically by cutting costs, preventing damage to equipment and materials, and reducing nonproductive delays. An effective safety program benefits the employee more directly because his injuries cause personal suffering, lost time, and lower living standards for his family. Since both have much to gain, management and workers should cooperate closely to eliminate disabling work injuries. The greater contest participation and the larger number of perfect safety records indicate increasing safety consciousness on the part of management and employees.

Ten proposed processes for the recovery of manganese from domestic resources as a high-grade oxide product are described. Nine of the processes employ sulfur dioxide, sulfuric acid, or a combination of both for leaching. The tenth process utilizes sulfur dioxide to sulfatize the ore at 600° to 850°C before water leaching. In addiction to these ten complete processes, six processes from the patent literature are described. Methods for receovering MnSO4?H2O are also reviewed.

The mining methods and practices used at the Young zinc mine, American Zinc Co. of Tennessee, have resulted in a low-cost, high-yield operation. Zinc ore (sphalerite) occurs in limestone-dolomite beds of the Kingsport Formation and is mined by modified room and pillar method. Utilizing trackless mining equipment which incorporates a high degree of flexibility, this operation has had a steady increase in productivity.
