"The most economical way of dewatering mineral concentrates is to reduce the moisture content in the material mechanically using thickeners and filtration avoiding thermal drying whenever possible. In addition to this, the dewatering process should produce low moisture cake, high quality liquid, consume little energy. As a part of the dewatering process The CERAMEC® capillary filter has been proven to meet these requirements in over 150 installations. The filtration is done by using ceramic filter plates with small pore size. The capillary action in the filter medium secures gas free filtration at good vacuum, and due to the small pore size, filtrate is crystal clean and particle free. The energy consumption is minimal. This paper will discuss results from filters installed at Pyhäsalmi Mine Oy in Finland where the technology was has been used since the late eighties. Results from more recent installations like Los Pelambres in Chile and LKAB in Sweden will also be discussed.INTRODUCTIONThe idea of using capillary action to make dewatering more efficient was invented two decades ago. Ten years later whole filter plants utilizing the new method were delivered to mine concentrators for dewatering of mineral concentrates. Further development of ceramic membrane plates made it possible to meet the requirements in iron ore dewatering. In addition to low cake moisture, high capacity and low energy consumption, there are a lot of environmental advantages in using capillary filtration. Using batch reactors equipped with CO and CO2 gas sensor, CO oxidation over Au catalysts in room air has been investigated and compared with Pt catalysts. For both Au and Pt catalysts, the logarithm plot of CO concentration data during initial 10 min are well fitted by straight line, which mean the first order dependence on the CO concentration between 10 and 10,000ppm. The rate constant value (k) over Au and Pt catalyst generally decrease with increasing initial CO concentration above 100ppm. The value decrease especially rapidly between 100ppm and 1,000ppm over Pt catalysts, which should be due to the strong adsorption of CO on Pt. The k value over Au catalyst has become ten times or more as large as the Pt catalysts at 1,000ppm. Already for the initial concentration of 100ppm CO, the strongly adsorbed CO on Pt metal has been clearly observed by FT-IR during the reaction over Pt/Al2O3. A part of the strongly adsorbed CO has been remained on Pt after the disappearance of gas phase CO, and has gradually changed to gas phase CO2. Such strongly adsorbed species on Au has never been observed on Au/TiO2 under the same reaction conditions. These features of Au catalysts are favorable for indoor air purification.

Fluctuating metal prices, declining head grade, and increased operational costs are forcing many open pit mining companies to look to their balance sheets for significant cost reductions in order to remain competitive. Maintenance continues to represent a significant proportion of the total operating costs in the mining industry. Compared with the other major cost components of the mining process, very little effort has gone into maintenance optimization. The potential payoff from maintenance optimization on the cash cost of the commodity is enormous. A large percentage of these costs are incurred in unscheduled maintenance events, which typically cause serious disruptions to the production process. These maintenance-induced production losses can be a significant contributor to the overall operating costs. A structured proactive maintenance approach using the latest advances in technology can achieve dramatic cost reductions and productivity improvements. Remote condition monitoring systems are becoming increasingly commonplace and have the potential to identify problems prior to failure. Detection of equipment degradation prior to failure will enable repairs to be scheduled thereby reducing costs and interruptions to production. Remote condition monitoring technology has evolved rapidly in recent years, with a host of new tools becoming available to assist mine operators in improving their maintenance operations. These tools have capabilities such as remote real-time vital signs and performance monitoring, alarm/event handling, trend analysis, and maintenance workflow management. When these monitoring tools are used in conjunction with a mine management system, the vital signs data can be integrated and associated with maintenance history, predictive maintenance data, operational information, and geographical information. This integrated approach to the management of vital maintenance data will help shift the mobile equipment maintenance paradigm from reactive to proactive. This paper will introduce a proactive approach to the management of the maintenance process and the tools required to facilitate this process.

"For the past eight years Paques has been engaged in the development and installation of treatment systems based on biotechnological processes to remove sulfur compounds from water, air and gaseous streams. Metal and sulfate can be removed from mine waters using two biological steps:1. Sulfate reducing bacteria convert sulfate to hydrogen sulfide (H2S). The H2S reacts with the dissolved metals to form insoluble metal sulfide precipitates.2. Sulfide oxidizing bacteria convert excess H2S to elemental sulfur.Paques has designed and installed a groundwater treatment system for the Budelco zinc refinery in the Netherlands to remove metals and sulfate as described above. The system has been operating since May 1992 treating a flow of 5000 m3/d. A test program, utilizing a large scale pilot plant, will commence in November 1995 at a copper mine in the U.S.A. to remediate groundwater contaminated with sulfate and heavy metals. Biological reactor performance and selective metal recovery will be studied. Sulfur dioxide (S02) can be removed from fluegas using a combination of scrubber technology and the two biological steps. The end product is elemental sulfur. A commercial size biological desulfurization plant has been in operation since July 1994 treating 50,000 Nm3/h of fluegas. Sulfide can be removed from mining waters or anaerobic wetlands using a THIOPAQ® Sulfide Oxidizing reactor.lntroductionSulfur can be present in various water and gaseous streams in a mining operation. In many cases the sulfur compounds have to be removed because of toxicity, corrosive properties and contribution to acid rain. Mine waters can contain dissolved heavy metals. An efficient way to remove dissolved metals removal is the precipitation as metal sulfides. Paques has developed and installed treatment systems based on biotechnological processes to remove sulfur compounds from water, air and gaseous streams. These treatment systems biologically convert sulfate to hydrogen sulfide (H2S) which can be used in heavy metal precipitation. Excess H2S is biologically converted to elemental sulfur. This paper provides an overview of these newly developed biotechnological treatment systems."

About 80 years ago the mining industry saw an advertisement of a machine manufacturer: ?One man ? one machine?, meaning the productivity gain by using a pneumatic rock drill instead of manual tools. Mechanization in mining had started. In the 1950's and 1960's when mechanization progressed the word could be transformed into the meaning of ?one man ? one drill rig?. During the 80's automatic functions were added to the machines. Automation started. In the 90's, the first autonomous machines were seen, transforming the advertisement from the 1920's into ?one man ? multiple machines? operated from a remote control room. Soon, the productivity gain achieved by pure automation will also be flating out meaning that the margin cost of further productivity gain will be inefficiently high. What next? In mining operations there is still a high potential of unused productivity lost by ?trivial? things like organization, logistics and operational management. Changing the focus from mechanization and automation towards optimizing the overall mining process will unleash another big potential for cost cuttings and for enhancing efficiency of production. Optimizing an overall process is a task of much higher total complexity compared to an isolated machine automation focus. And a successful process integration requires the collaboration of machine vendors, infrastructure suppliers, IT services and the mine itself. It requires a number of of important preconditions to be fulfilled: ? Integrated IT systems with seamless interfaces between all components and peripherals involved ? Real time information access in all locations ? Real time overview of all operational aspects A crucial aspect for all of these issues is a seamless communication both above and also under ground and IT interfaces which are easy and price efficient to implement. This paper highlights ways to achieve productivity gains by process optimization. It also discusses needs for industry wide activities in order to enable cost efficient performance of mine process optimization projects.

"Batch and continuous regrind tests were conducted in 3 kW and 15 kW tower mill units, respectively. Single particle size classes of a chilean copper sulphide concentrate were employed in the batch tests, while a fraction of the plant stream was deviated to the continuous unit operated under different conditions.Results are interpreted in terms of the simplified grinding kinetic model energy-based and conveniently adapted to this application. Based on the above figures plus some industrial data supplied by MPSI Inc., a scale-up relationship was developed for the apparent specific rate of breakage siE, as a function of the net power draw P, i.e.siE = siE text (P/P test) 0.089This equation fit very well the available data at the three scales and its application to regrind 4400 t/day of rougher copper concentrate from 70% below 325 Tyler mesh to 95% below same mesh, involves around 30% energy-saving compared to standard ball mill for same grinding task.INTRODUCTIONImpact and abrasion-attrition breakage are two extreme mechanisms present in any grinding system in a proportion defined by specific design and operating conditions. Impact breakage is generally efficient for coarse grinding, while abrasion-attrition is adequate to produce fine particles. Efficiency of conventional tumbling mills decreases as fineness of the product increases, even though distribution of applied stresses is always much stronger than internal force distribution in the particles. On the other hand.in a vertically stirred ball mill like the tower mill, distribution of applied stresses and particle strengths are in the same order of magnitude, making possible nearly ideal abrasion conditions (1).Tower mill configuration includes a cylindrical body vertically mounted and provided with a central screw with flights to produce circulation of balls moved up through the inner region to return down by the external space. Fresh material can be fed into the top , center or bottom in order to assure appropriate agitation of suspended particles. Size reduction and evacuation rates should compensate settling of coarse particles to avoid sanding of the screw. Detailed description of the tower mill and its operation have been given elsewhere (2),(3)."

"The Penna shaft is the deepest single-lift shaft in North America. Agnico-Eagle started sinking the Penna shaft in 1995 with a hoisting plant capable of hoisting 1800 t/d from a 2240-m deep shaft. Exploration success at depth led to the replacement of the existing double drum hoist by another double drum hoist capable of hoisting 7000 t/d. The use of another double drum hoist, instead of a Blair multi-rope winder, to hoist 24.5 t skips was only made possible by lowering the safety factor.This paper describes recent experiences at Penna and in South Africa, and examines the possibility of extending the double drum hoisting system to a depth of 3 km. IntroductionThe original Penna production hoist was a 4.88 m (16 ft) diameter double drum and single clutch machine. Béliveau (1996) and Scott (1996) have described this hoisting plant. In 1998, a decision was made to increase mining capacity from 1800 t to 4500 t of ore per day from the shaft bottom. Final capacity had to include an allowance of 1800 t of waste per day for future capital projects. While daily capacity was to be 6300 t, it would, by taking into account the different rock densities, be equivalent to hoisting 7000 t of ore.The steps taken to lower the safety factor were presented by McLaughlin and Scott"

The Sarcheshmeh copper deposit contains 1 billion tones of ore averaging 0.7% copper and 0.025% molybdenum. It is located southeast of Iran and currently processes 41,000t/d. Molybdenite as a by-product is recovered in two separate stages. First, a bulk coppermolybdenum concentrate is produced and in the second stage these two are separated. The recovery of molybdenite in the first and second stages is 65% and 85-90%, respectively. The yearly production of molybdenite concentrate varies between 3500 and 4000 t. Sodium sulphide is used as the depressant of the copper and iron bearing minerals which due to a rather high consumption (17.7 kg/t) constitutes one of the major cost items of the plant (i.e., 58% of total reagents cost). A detailed laboratory scale study showed that replacing air with nitrogen could reduce the consumption of sodium sulphide (i.e., H2S or mineral origin). Nitrogen for the plant was supplied from an oxygen plant used for the smelter through a 1400 m long pipeline. The existence of the oxygen plant at the Sarcheshmeh complex was a key factor in the implementation and success of this project. After using nitrogen in the plant for a period of twenty one months, the consumption of sodium sulphide was reduced from 17.7 to 14.2 kg/t at constant metallurgy. The reduction was lower than expected which was mainly due to the type of sodium sulphide used and the lack of any automatic instrument to control the depressant (sodium sulphide) dosage. The latter in turn caused the operators to overuse sodium sulphide in order to reach and maintain the target metallurgy (i.e., higher molybdenite recovery along with lower copper content of the concentrate).

"The need for production of a competent fill was recognized early by the project partners. Consequently, a 4000 Ud paste fill plant was constructed and commissioned in early August 1994.In order to fine tune the process without risk to the underground workings, a closed pumping loop was devised on surface. After two months of this exercise, the first underground slope was filled according to specifications obtained from the pilot plant trials.This paper will focus on the operational problems encountered and the solutions adopted so far, and on a comparison between expected and actual fill production and characteristics.RésuméLa nécessité de produire un remblai de propriétés mécaniques suffisantes a été rapidement reconnue par les partenaires du projet. "In recent years, FFE Minerals has designed, installed and commissioned several large grinding mill circuits. This paper discusses the issues related to the erection and commissioning of large grinding mill circuits. The three circuits discussed are Collahuasi in Chile, Minera Los Pelambres in Chile, and Century Zinc in Australia. These circuits include large SAG and ball mills with both gear and gearless drive arrangements, as well as, both trunnion and shell supported mills. Aspects of these features are discussed with respect to their impact on installation and commissioning. While the normal challenges of mill erection and start-up were experienced, there were also a few unexpected challenges encountered partly due to the large scale of the equipment. An overview of the equipment and design ratings of these circuits is also provided.COLLAHUASIOverviewThe Collahuasi mills were started-up in November of 1998. The site is located in the Andes Mountains at an elevation of 4300 meters. The grinding circuit includes two lines featuring one SAG mill and one ball mill for each line. The circuit features a recycle conveyor around the SAG mills with provision for adding a pebble crusher in the future. The design tonnage of the grinding plant is 60,000 MTPD with an ore BWI of 10.5 kWh/MT.The SAG mills are 32’ x 15’ (1 3’ EGL) with 10,800 HP drives. The drive arrangements are dual pinion through pneumatic clutches. The mills are driven by low speed synchronous motors with CCV variable speed drives. The SAG mills are trunnion supported and use hydrostatic lubrication. Feed to the SAG mills is via a rock-box type feed chute on a cart. The mills discharge on to trommel screens with a bucket wheel to remove the oversize.The ball mills are 22’ x 36.5’ (36’ EGL) with 12,500 HP drives. The drive arrangements are dual pinion through pneumatic clutches. The fixed speed mills are driven by low speed synchronous motors with GE Quadramatic load sharing drives. The ball mills are shell-supported and feature multi-pad bearings with hydrodynamic lubrication. The mills are fed via a rubber lined sump box with feed spout on a cart. The ball mills also discharge on to trommel screens. Twenty-six inch (26”) diameter hydrocyclones are in closed circuit with the ball mills."

"This paper describes the development of a mathematical model for determining the liberation of an ore at various grinding sizes, based on the combined results of microscopic counting, grinding tests, and chemical analysis.The method is illustrated with an application to the magnetite ore of Sherman Mine in Temagomi, Ontario. For this ore, a degree of liberation of 98.7% was determined at a grinding size of 90% passing 44 microns, which closely corresponds to the final grinding size employed at the Sherman Mine Concentrator.Introduction Liberation characteristic of ores have direct and significant bearing on overall economics of concentration processes.Target grades and recoveries can be achieved only it minerals are adequately liberated prior to separation. Degree of liberation depends on the extent of size reduction. However, due to the high costs associated with size reduction processes, it is important to keep size reductions within limits of satisfactory liberation. Prevention of excessive size reduction is also necessary because of inefficient mineral separations in very fine sizes. Hence, a study of reduction size — liberation relationship is essential for optimum profit from milling operations.A number of procedures have been developed for liberation studies (1-12), but there is lack of method for universal adoption.A new approach is presented in this paper that might provide a realistic estimate of liberation and give a practical guidance as to the degree of size reduction required for satisfactory liberation."

"Potash processing in Canada commenced on a commercial scale in 1962. Over the last 25 years it has grown into a world-class industry with many advances in processing technology. As it is a relatively young industry, many more advances can be expected. Unlike much of the mineral production in Canada, potash is sold as a range of finished products. The processing involves potash recovery and finishing in about equal amounts in terms of the effort of processing. Environmental concerns are not insignificant and are being treated uniquely in some areas. Research and development efforts, while not carried out on a large scale, are attacking industry problems on a wide front.THE INDUSTRYThe Canadian potash industry has 12 producing mines, 10 in Saskatchewan and 2 in New Brunswick. The total productive capacity of the industry is 18,300,000 tonnes of products per year. At capacity, the industry 1•ill process the equivalent of about 53,000,000 tonnes of ore per year. Plants range in size from 8,000 tonnes to 24,000 tonnes of feed per operating day. In product terms this is from 2,500 to 3,500 tonnes of products per day.Of the 12 mines, 11 are conventional underground mining operations with potash recovery principally by flotation supplemented by crystallization and one is a solution mine where mining is achieved by dissolving the potash and salt in underground caverns and then treating the solution in an evaporator/ crystallizer circuit. In all plants there is commonality of unit operation in the product screening and compaction sections. There are three principal ores being treated in the conventional plants. Work to improve employees' behavior in Głogów Copper Smelter began in 2009. It has been noted that over 90% of accidents at work are attributable to human reasons. At that time, a series of external workshops was contracted based on exercises conducted by a psychologist trainer with supervisors. Having trained about 300 employees, an observation of employee behavior at workstations was started as part of the control of risk reduction measures. As a result of the above actions, the number of accidents was reduced by half between 2009 and 2017. Currently, internal workshops for communication improvement for behavioral auditors are conducted by the employees of the Smelter. Named: "I observe, react and communicate" and aimed at further mastering the elements of the safety culture in Głogów Copper Smelter. INTRODUCTION KGHM Polska Miedz is an integrated mining and smelting copper producer based in Poland and operates on the international metal market. KGHM, with annual production of over 500 thousand tonnes of copper, holds a middle position in the world ranking of copper producers. At the same time, in Europe it is the largest producer of copper from its own ore deposits, possessing its own integrated production structure, from underground mining operations to final, top-quality product. It is also worth mentioning that KGHM Polska Miedź is one of the largest Polish exporters and, apart from copper, is a significant primary silver producer in the world. The mission of our company, consistent with its strategy, is to produce copper and silver in a safe mode for workers and the environment, with reduced environmental impact. Therefore, "Głogów" Copper Smelter operations are continuously focused on the creation of safe working conditions, and minimizing the negative effects on the environment. "This paper evaluates the effect of grind size on the flotation performance of a platinum ore from the UG2 reef of the Bushveld Igneous Complex, in South Africa. The study was conducted on the Mintek Flotation Pilot Plant Facility, located in Johannesburg, and represented a thorough evaluation of the application of the flotation modelling methodology developed jointly by the University of Cape Town and the Julius Kruttschnitt Mineral Research Centre at the University of Queensland through the AMIRA P9 Project. A simulation model of the pilot plant data was successfully implemented, providing a set of circuit modelling parameters that appeared to be both consistent and well correlated to measurable characteristics of the ore and the pilot circuit operating conditions. The findings indicate that the methodology that was used could well provide a useful framework for developing optimisation criteria for industrial flotation circuits in combination with appropriate feed grind size and regrind size targets.INTRODUCTIONIt has long been recognised that the size distribution of an ore is one of the most important factors in the determination of the performance of a flotation process. It therefore follows that the optimisation of a flotation plant cannot be considered without due recognition of the interdependence of this process with the process of comminution. There are numerous qualitative guidelines for the selection of an optimum grind target for a particular operation. Mineralogical analysis can readily provide information on liberation as a function of grind, and the desirable particle size range for optimum mineral flotation is well established in both theory and practice (see for example Trahar, 198 1). For some operations, meeting these two criteria simultaneously is relatively simple. For the majority of operations, such mineralogically “easy” deposits, if they ever existed, have long been exhausted, and the optimum grind represents a highly complex compromise between liberation and overgrinding of both desirable minerals and gangue. This is particularly true for circuits that include regrind stages, where both primary and secondary (and sometime even tertiary) grind targets must be specified. As has been pointed out in a recent paper by Bazin and Hodouin (2001), there is little or no information in the literature to assist plant engineers in the selection of optimum grind targets for complex ore deposits, so current practice is primarily based on rules-of-thumb and experience. This problem is further compounded by the fact that once grind targets have been selected for a particular operation, the assessment and adjustment of these targets based on plant surveys is extremely difficult, time consuming and expensive, and is often not attempted unless the plant significantly underperforms relative to expectation. It is therefore clear that the development of a practical quantitative approach to this problem is a high priority for flotation research and development studies."

"Giant Yellowknife Mines Limited (Giant) has been producing gold since 1948. Located at Yellowknife, Northwest Territories, Canada, see Figure 1, the mine processes approximately 1,200 short tons per day of 0.23 ounce gold per ton of ore.The majority of the gold in the ore is sub-microscopic and associated within the mineral arsenopyrite. This association complicates the extraction method since straight cyanidation will only recover 30% of the gold. The operations at Giant involve four essential steps, with an overall recovery of 87%. The steps shown in Figure 2 are crushing and grinding, flotation, roasting and cyanidation. These processes result in a number of effluent waste streams characterized in Table 1. These streams are combined and sent to a tailings storage pond for subsequent treatment prior to discharge to the environment.Giant is located just north of the 62nd parallel where winter temperatures drop to -40°C for extended periods. This entails storing effluent in dams over the seven month winter period for treatment during the relatively short summer season.The treatment method currently employed at Giant is an ""alkaline chlorination-arsenic precipitation-flocculation"" process. The pond water is subjected to three phases of treatment prior to being discharged to the environment as shown in Figure 3."
