Unknown goafs and roadways of abandoned coalmines can be a great water inrush hazard for coalmine workers. Consequently, advance detection of such hazards is of great importance. By detonating seismic charges in underground coal seams, we can collect seismic data using a surface survey line, which is located across the ground projection of the underground shot point. This experiment was conducted in a coalmine in Shaanxi Province, China. After surface elevation compensation and travel time adjustments, we accurately determined the position of the goaf boundary along the survey line based on the wave velocity anomaly on the seismic record. Then we used a scattered wave imaging technique to enhance the energy of the scattered waves that are generated when the coal seam roof slide wave (refracted wave when the incident angle bigger than the critical angle) hits the roadway, thus confirming location of a geological discontinuity (roadway). This experiment shows that the coalmine ground seismic method, employing an underground explosive charge and a surface seismic array, has the ability to detect an abandoned roadway and goaf in advance of coal mining, thus can improve worker safety.

This paper presents elements of the Virtual Working Environment for identification of hazards occurring in the mining industry. The Virtual Working Environment includes models of machinery and models of anthropometric features. Examples are given for identification of technical hazards at the design stage using the following computer programs: Finite Elements Method, Multibody System Analysis and Human Body Modeling. One of the methods to improve work safety at the machine and equipment maintenance stage is to share design and operational knowledge in a form of an Interactive Electronic Technical Manual (IETM). An IETM is created using so-called reusable knowledge elements connected by relationships. A metamodel created in Unified Modeling Language is one of the forms for description of these relationships. The metamodel can represent, for example, interrelations between elements of repair procedures. Examples of procedures realized during the replacement of a damaged cutting bit are presented and discussed.

Environmental regulations require means for controlling emissions of SO2 NOx and particulate when burning coal. The combustion of coal in limestone fluidized beds is one of the most promising techniques for the necessary reduction in emissions. Fluidized-bed firing, furthermore, offers potential economies in capital equipment. The world's largest steam generator applying fluidized-bed techniques was built under the sponsorship of ERDA and installed in Rivesville, West Virginia. This paper describes the design and discusses the start-up and development difficulties which were experienced during the period from initial operation to current readiness for commercial operation. Other developments leading to utility and industrial fluidized-bed steam generating equipment are reviewed. The future potential of this promising technique is discussed.

In 1920 the writer presented some notes, embodying his experience with storage-battery locomotives as main under-ground haulage-motors at Brazeau collieries. (1) Since that date these motors have stood up well to the test of maximum output and heavy overloads, having accomplished all that was expected of them. The notes presented in 1920 gave a brief description of the conditions under which these motors were working at Brazeau collieries, also the cost, per ton mile, of operating them. The cost per ton mile has since then been appreciably reduced, by working the locomotives nearly to capacity and under more ideal haulage conditions, on both shifts. It is not the intention of the writer to repeat what was written in 1920, but rather to give members the benefit of his experience in operating different types or designs of locomotives; to draw their attention to the drawbacks of some designs, and to the improvements made in some of the more recent storage-battery locomotives put on the market, as regards efficiency, upkeep, and safety. Because of their flexibility storage-battery locomotives have advantages over any other type of haulage, where grades are suitable to their use. The number in use in the mines in the United States has increased enormously during the past few years, and this method of haulage is, at the present time, attracting the attention of British and Continental mining engineers.

This paper examines the latest advances in mine hoist motor and drives systems. The technology employed for large hoists has migrated from the traditional DC technology to AC motors with cyclo convertor drives, and more recently, advances in pulse width modulation (PWM) drives have resulted in these being applied to large hoist drives. When combined with PWM drive technology, the induction motor presents the ideal solution for hoist applications This paper examines the factors in choosing a suitable PWM drive and motor for a hoist installation. Factors under consideration include: ? hoist duty cycle, ? drive rating restrictions, ? choice of power semiconductor device,, ? low speed operation, ? maintenance ? reliability The cage induction motor and synchronous motor are compared and it is shown that the induction motor is the motor of choice for large hoists.

This paper describes a rock drill bit which, although conventional in the processes of manufacture and use on the job, has incorporated into the outer wall or periphery of the insert, where wear is always the greatest, a variable amount of extra metal, distributed in units of height of insert to withstand this excessive wear. Explained are variations of construction, how the extra metal enables the bit to drill more footage, prevent antitaper and the need to gauge grind, increase penetration rate and the length of run per regrind, reduce shank breakage and ma-chine costs, and permit increased production per man-shift, without requiring any change in equipment already on the job. The construction and use of the B.E.T. (gas adsorption) apparatus is described. Examples are given for the determination of large and small surface areas using nitrogen and krypton. Introduction A NY study of the milling of ores from crushing to grinding, classification, and concentration and finally dewatering of the products involves solid particles which are either in contact with a gas or a liquid phase. The surface area of the solid and its characteristics constitute important parameters in all mineral dressing operations. The success of any particular operation is dependent on the interaction of the surface of the solid particles with the gas or the liquid phase. Particle size and specific surface (surface area per unit weight) continue to be important parameters in the flotation research associated with the adsorption of collector molecules or ions on mineral particles, as in the early years of mineral dressing research (1). In order to understand the mechanism of the flotation process, it is essential that the surface properties of the adsorbent be known.

"CANMET’s Mining and Mineral Sciences Laboratories have developed the Canadian Mining Technology Network (CMT-Net), a website to provide industry with up to date information on technologies in several areas. This paper gives background on the Mineral and Metal Processing sector, describes the steps leading to the development of the websites strategy and gives a tour of CMT-Net. IntroductionThe government of Canada is developing a strategy aimed at fostering the development of value-added activities in the area of mineral and metal processing (MMP). Natural Resources Canada (NRCan) and Industry Canada will partner in delivering on this strategy. Instrumental in defining the main thrusts of the value-added strategy was a series of consultations held across Canada with representatives of companies and organizations active in the sector. The objective of the consultations was to identify barriers to the development of activities which add value in the sector, as well as point to positive factors.Following the consultations, a discussion paper was produced, “From Mineral Resources to Manufactured Products: Towards a Value- Added Mineral and Metal Strategy for Canada” (Natural Resources Canada, 1998). The paper reviews the sector’s structure and main statistical information, lists some of the positive factors and barriers to value-added activities and defines a new partnership between industry and government that will lead to more valueadded activities. The main objective of the paper is to serve as a discussion document between stakeholders during the development of the strategy."

"Uranium, thorium and yttrium have been recovered, since the 1950s, from pyritic quartz-pebble conglomerates occurring in the basal sediments of the Quirke syncline at Elliot Lake. Gold, an element of interest in similar type deposits occurring worldwide, is a very minor constituent of the Elliot Lake conglomerates because the provenance area of the sediments had few gold-bearing rocks.Uranium, thorium and rare elements are found in resistate and diagenetic minerals occurring in the matrix of the conglomerates. The valuable elements are recovered from the acid soluble minerals during the milling process.Large uranium reserves occur in mines found on both limbs of the Quirke syncline. Major reserves are being developed on the South Limb of the syncline, where the Stanleigh Mine, among four past-producers, has been reactivated.IntroductionUranium and thorium commonly occur in anomalous amounts in coarse basal sediments. Radioactivity in basal conglomeratic sediments is generally attributable to resistate minerals, that rarely occur in concentrations high enough to be of economic significance. One type of basal conglomerate found worldwide, in Precambrian cratonic basins, has uranium or uranium and gold concentrations large enough to be of economic interest. Principal among the occurrences are the pyritic quartz-pebble conglomerates of the Huronian in Canada, of the Witwatersrand in South Africa and at Jacobina in Brazil.The uranium and gold mineralization of these conglomerates was derived from provenance areas where both elements occurred and were later concentrated through source degradation and deposition in placers in a reducing environment. Only the Huronian conglomerates, generally much richer in uranium but with negligible gold, have been exploited solely for their uranium content.The uraniferous conglomerates of the Huronian at Elliot Lake, 500 km north of Toronto, continue to represent a major world source and supply of uranium concentrate."

The surficial Archæan rocks of the southern gold belt of western Quebec are constricted near Kewagama lake by granite masses to the north and south. This divides the belt into natural eastern and western parts. This paper deals with the eastern part, extending from Malanie to Haig township. In this section the Keewatin-Timiskaming rocks have a length of about 70 miles and end abruptly against garnetiferous gneisses of the Grenville terrain. In the western half of the section where exploration has been under way since the early twenties, there are sixteen mines that are or have been in operation, and eleven prospective mines. In the eastern half where exploration has been carried on since the early thirties, six prospective gold mines are under development, one· of which, Louvicourt Goldfields, is at the initial production stage. Of the sixteen properties in the western half that are operating or have operated, all, except the Golden Manitou, which is a base metal mine, and the old Green Stabell from which there was a small production of copper, produce gold. Of the eleven prospective mines in the western half nine have gold. New Bidlamaque has gold and copper and one, East Sullivan, has copper-zinc ore. Since production began in 1927 gold, silver, zinc, copper, and lead having a total value of about $10,000,000 have been produced from the mines of the eastern section of the southern gold belt of western Quebec.

"More than 400 plants in the world are able to accumulate nickel in their aerial parts at concentrations higher than 10 g per kg of dry biomass. Then, nickel (Ni) can be recovered from the biomass of these hyperaccumulator plants. Agromining is a chain consisting in growing such plants and recovering metal and has been developed thanks to the combined know-how of agronomy and hydrometallurgy. Plants can be grown on serpentine soils, containing rather high concentrations of Ni, on sterile heaps or on contaminated soils. This crop enables us to extract Ni from secondary resources, and to improve soil quality by lowering its metal content. For example, Alyssum murale can be grown at the field scale in the Balkans, at yields corresponding to 110 kg Ni per hectare.Hydrometallurgical processes have been designed from the lab scale to the pilot scale to produce nickel salts: ANSH (ammonium and nickel sulphate hexahydrate), nickel sulphate, acetate, etc. and so on. These salts are used for surface treatment and in the paint and chemical industry. Ni salts are prepared from ashes, after plant calcination. Processes are based on the conventional methods of hydrometallurgy: acid leaching followed by different precipitation steps. These processes will be presented, as well as the pilot scale design. A life cycle assessment has been performed and clearly shows the environmental interest of this approach as a potential part of an anti-erosion strategy. An economic assessment has proved process feasibility and the final step is the launching of a start-up. At the moment, the approach is widened to other metals (cadmium, cobalt) and rare earth elements (REEs)."

Photovoltaic (PV) system is especially taken notice as one of important renewable energy resources, because PV has potential to provide a certain amount of energy supply as well as without greenhouse gases emission. Considering recent rapid increasing demand for PV system, more expansion of PV system is expected in the future. However, some precious metals and minor metals such as silver, indium and others are used as component materials of solar cell in PV system. Even if energy supply would become renewable, strict limitation of these metals still remain because amount of natural resources and recycling of metals has restrictions intrinsically. The aim of this study is to reveal the possibility of materials supply restrictions for Photovoltaic system quantitatively and to propose several measurements to assess supply risks for materials. Especially, silver supply potential which is used as wire line in PV system as well as PV demand forecast to estimate material use in the future are focused on. We divide underlying supply risk into 5 measurements and analyze them by time series, i.e. price volatility, resource potential, recycling ratio, production type and supply concentration are investigated. Comparing these factors of silver with other metals, the potential of silver supply for PV is presented. In addition to it, we propose another method to quantify country risk applied an insurance pricing model in finance pricing theory and combine it with the supply concentration measurement. As a result, supply risk of silver will increase gradually in the near future because of its resource constraints and supply-demand balances although silver market is sufficiency competitive one. From the country risk analysis, Peru is not only a significant supply country but also has the highest country risk. Some higher risk countries will increase the level of supply risk even if the concentration ratio of supply indicates moderate level.

"Rockfall barriers are widely known as proven efficiency element to protect infrastructure by catching the rock blocks in the falling direction and absorbing the energy generated by them.It’s common in the project design phase and during installation, fix rockfall barriers for catch a high percentage of the falling blocks and in many cases consider as valid the solution when the barrier can capture all of them. However, in many cases it’s possible to consider the use of these protections, simply to guarantee a secure shed for the traffic and intercept simply the blocks that theoretically hit the road surface.The results of the high-energy rockfall protection barriers type GBE which protect GC-200 road in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria are shown in this paper.The topographic data should be especially detailed observed and even more if you want to apply the technique of ""shadow zone"" with a flexible gallery system. It should be drawn from detailed topographic maps and drawings (photogrammetric restitution) to the scales 1/1000, 1/500, or 1/200; and it is important not to ignore the presence of vertical cuts, tracks, small slopes that modify the trajectories (trampoline effect, hard points that favor the rebounds) and which are not always presented in the drawings.The ""shadow zone"" is defined as the protected area, located at a lower elevation to the line created by the rockfall barrier to except of trajectories of rocks and free from the influence of the deflection of the system under the maximum energy level for which it was designed (MEL)."

"In Catalonia, between the 10th century and 1878, some installations were developed which at first were called ""factories"" and later ""fargas"", since they manufactured iron and steel of low carbon content. Because of its excellent quality, the fame of this metal spread from Catalonia to many countries. Fargas were started in Corsica, the Low Countries, Germany, Oriental India, Madagascar, Finland and along the rivers Orinoco and Mississippi among others. The extractive process used in these fargas has passed into history as the ""Catalan Farga Process"", ""Catalan Process"", or just ""Farga Catalana"". With this technology, raw material was obtained for the fabrication of tools, nails, weapons, grilles, etc. to supply the national and export markets. Aside from meteorites and native iron, found as metallic nodules in basalts in Greenland and Palestine, the ancient civilizations, which had no means to reach the fusion temperature of iron (1535°C), obtained iron by a direct process. Similar processes were used until quite recently (1930s) by certain tribes in Central Africa; holes in the ground were filled with iron ore and coal, and combustion encouraged by blowing air by mouth or with bellows made of animal skins. Thus without melting the iron it is possible to reduce the mineral and obtain a porous and impure metallic mass, which is purified on forging by mechanical squeezing. With a process very likely similar, the famous column at Dehli weighing 6.4 m.t. was built about 300 B.C."

However, Volume I may be looked upon as a general guide, whereas this Volume is a reference volume. It deals in considerable detail with specific provisions and concepts relating to royalties between private parties. This does not, however, mean that Chapter 5 can be ignored. It should be looked upon as a source of general information concerning royalties between private parties and as a negotiating aid intended to give an overview of various topics. You may well find that in its general approach it will lead you to ask a question which, hopefully, will be dealt with in this Volume .It should be remembered that royalty agreements are agreements with a particular focus, and so the concepts set forth in Chapter 1 apply to them. This chapter addresses a few considerations specific to royalties that will usually form part of an agreement rather than a stand-alone agreement.9.2. FORMAT FOR ROYALTY PROVISIONSIn many of the cases where royalties arise, they are adjunct to, or part of, other arrangements. For example, a royalty may form part or all of the consideration to be given to an owner upon purchase of his property, or it may arise if a joint venturer ceases to contribute to the venture and has his interest converted to a royalty.1 It is with such situations that this section primarily deals; if the royalty is contained in an agreement that is singularly, or primarily, concerned with creating it, then it is just a normal agreement.Commonly, by the time the right to receive the royalty arises, at least some of the other provisions of the agreement have been performed and/or become redundant. "Booster fans play an important role in assisting main fans by boosting the air pressure of the ventilation air passing through it. The correct placement of underground booster fans in a mine is a critical decision since it not only influences the mine’s operational capacity in terms of costs and efficiency, but also affects safety and environmental conditions. There are many booster fan installations around mines that are inappropriate, in some cases resulting in system failure (fan stall) or in a major negative impact on mine production. Inadequate booster fan placement has resulted, in some cases, in extensive air leakage which has compromised the economics of the operation and, in other cases, in recirculation of contaminants which has seriously compromised safety. This paper provides guidelines for proper design and siting of booster fans underground, to not only achieve an economic ventilation system but to create safe work conditions and efficient atmospheric conditions. Procedures for the planning, installation, operation and maintenance of booster fans are also presented. A case study illustrating the design and siting of a major booster fan installation in a potash mine, supported by computational fluid dynamics analysis, is presented.INTRODUCTIONIn large underground operations with complex ventilation networks offering high resistances, the never ending increased required quantities of air can almost only be supplied through use of high pressure main fan systems. These fans may, in effect, induce significant leakage losses in the system, having a negative impact on safety performance. In such cases, booster fans can be designed to decrease the main fan pressures and reduce the leakage flows, improve system efficiency and reduce costs. In well designed systems, booster fans can thus be used to redistribute the airflow and assist the main surface fans.When the pressure supplied by the main fans is insufficient to meet the ventilation circuit pressure requirements, booster fans are placed in strategic locations where pressure boosting is essential. Booster fans are typically sited in sections of the circuit offering high ventilation resistance and requiring this form of ventilating air motivation. Booster fans are thus required when the mine expands, and so the resistance of the ventilation network, and the primary fans no longer can supply the required pressure and flow."

"Aggregates are the low-cost mineral raw material of building construction. Large volumes of aggregate are consumed each year. The availability of aggregates in southern Ontario is discussed in the context of the geological formations in which they occur. Sand and gravel are abundant in glacial deposits and in recent sediments. A knowledge of the glacial history is important for their discovery. Bedrock formations provide a variety of aggregates in Ontario. Knowledge of the rock types involved and of the depth of overburden are important for evaluation of the aggregate potential of bedrock resources in an area. Utilization of available resources intensifies as the population increases. Urban development makes it progressively more difficult to satisfy the demands of the construction industry. The effects of urban development on the aggregate resource base of an area are illustrated by developments and consumption statistics in the Toronto- centred region. There is an obvious need for a comprehensive survey of available resources in urban areas to serve as a guide in land-use planning. To fill this need, staff members of the Industrial Minerals Section, Geological Branch, Ontario Department of Mines and Northern Affairs, are engaged in mapping projects and mineral resource studies in southern Ontario as well as in some urban areas of northern Ontario."
