"Soil-gas Rn was measured by two types of alpha-particle-track detectors, by emanometry and by counting alpha-activity on Rn-decay-product collectors. Soil samples were analyzed for V by fluorimetric and fission-track methods, their Rn-emanation by decay-product collectors and their total alpha activities with track detectors. The same uranium anomalies were revealed by each method. Fission-track analysis of leaves for V showed only random variations with sampling site, and the Rn emanation of trees and leaves removed from them was barely detectable . The agreement among the other methods is significant, total alpha and collector methods are simple, rapid and useful, and a combination of methods at a site would reveal disequilibrium in the U-decay series if present. Track-Rn measurements are highly reproducible and insensitive to apparatus design and their sensitivity is not enhanced by covering the detectors with thin foil or placing them in large containers.IntroductionIn the past two years , a number of methods of geochemical exploration for uranium have been tested by the authors over the known copper-uranium occurrence at South March, Ontario. This was done partly to compare methods and partly to develop and test new ones. The South march deposit has been described a number of times by others(1,2,3,4). The methods included in this study were the following.Emanometry, Radon in soil gas is measured by pumping the gas into the cell of a scintillation counter or emanometer(5,6). Alpha particles from radon (222Rn) and its decay products (218Po and 214Po) produce scintillations of light in the silver-activated zinc sunphide (ZnS(Ag) covering the walls of the cell. These are counted by a photomultiplier tube and scaler, the count ra sulphide (ZnS(Ag) covering the walls of the cell. The Zn-Pb-Cu-Ag ore deposits of the Boundary and N-5 zones near Bathurst, New Brunswick, occur in a polydeforrned volcano-sedimentary sequence that is part of the Ordovician Tetagouche Group. Massive and disseminated sulfides are hosted by an argillaceous to cherty sedimentary sequence that is stratigraphically Wlderlain by a siliceous fragmental unit and is overlain by a feldspar-rich crystal tuff and related tuffaceous rocks. The deposits have a low iron sulfide content relative to that of most stratabound sulfide deposits of the Bathurst-Newcastle mining district. The ore is commonly associated with chlorite- and talc-rich sediments. The N-5 deposit is considered to be the fault-displaced extension of the Boundary deposit. The Boundary deposit is estimated to contain 891 000 t grading 3.31% Pb, 7.96% Zn, 0.32% Cu and 44 g/t Ag; the estimate for the N-5 zone is 330 000 t grading 3.24% Pb, 7.15% Zn, 0.33% Cu, and 37 g/t Ag. The ore is processed at 1000 tpd at the Heath Steele mill.

Subsequent to a campaign of pilot-kiln trials of firing bio-oil and natural gas, scale-up to commercial lime kilns was made using an in-house mathematical kiln model. Both dry limestone and lime mud kilns of 3.5 m OD. by 100 m length were used for bio¬oil firing simulations. Comparisons were made against natural gas firing on the basis of specific firing rate, off-gas volume, energy consumption and overall lime quality. Model simulation results indicate that conversion from natural gas to bio-oil with no productivity loss will increase energy comsumption by about 7.5% and total off-gas volume by about 8%. Alternatively, a 6% decrease in productivity would be expected if off-gas volume is maintained constant. The calculations are sensitive to deviations in the lower heating value (LHV) used in the simulations. A 5% increase in the LHV of the bio-oil, which could result from a 3% decrease in the moisture content, reduces the energy penalty to 2% coupled with a slight reduction in off-gas volume.

This paper discusses microstructural changes produced by two novel approaches using electron beam physical vapor deposition (EB-PVD) in which periodic strain fields/microporosity was incorporated within the large columnar grains of Zr02- 8wt.%Y2O3 (8YSZ). The traditional columnar microstructure of partially stabilized zirconia has been slightly modified to produce a lower thermal conductive thermal barrier coating (TBC) by periodically interrupting the condensing vapor resulting in microstructural modifications with diffuse or sharp interfaces and morphological changes on the sub-micron scale without changing the composition of the TBC. These microstructural modifications resulted in a 20-30% reduction in the thermal conductivity, 28-56% increase in hemispherical reflectance, improved oxidation cyclic life (over 100%), and better strain tolerance as compared to standard ZrO2-8wt.%Y2O3 deposited on platinum-nickel-aluminide and CoNiCrA1Y bond-coated MAR-M-247 test samples. The TBC with tailored microstructures were examined by various techniques including scanning electron microscopy (SEM), x-ray diffraction (XRD), steady-state laser heat flux technique, and hemispherical reflectance.

The paper presents the conceptual basis for the development of an Activity Based Costing system (ABC) for the analysis and estimation of process costs in mining and metallurgy. In particular, it discusses three major thrusts towards attaining increased efficiency in extraction and processing systems: (a) understanding the link between process and expenses, (b) identifying the chemical and physical factors that govern process costs and ( c) using process and cost models of the production systems. The authors have developed computer techniques to analyze data from conventional accounting and apply them to the development of process based ABC systems. The cost causing activities are linked to management units patterned after the organizational structure of the production system. All costs are associated with specific process functions such as charge preparation, smelting, refining, etc. The level of detail is determined by the quality of data available in conventional accounting systems. The system permits data analysis of historical cases and the projection of costs for new production schemes. Results can be presented in various levels of aggregation, following organizational and/or functional structures. The outputs of the system are tabular and graphical, typically following Pareto analysis concepts.

"The production of heavy water, the moderator in a CANDU reactor, is examined following a flow sheet of a typical Canadian plant. The process involves the extraction and concentration of deuterium from natural water through a chemical exchange mechanism with hydrogen sulphide. Consequently, corrosion problems associated with sour environments – the use of hydrogen sulphide - are an everyday problem and have led to the development of a highly refined materials selection and testing program to prevent equipment from failing prematurely.IntroductionHeavy water is a naturally occurring compound in ordinary water and is formed from the combination of two deuterium atoms and one atom of oxygen. Deuterium is a heavy hydrogen atom which has a nucleus of on e proton and one neutron. Hence, heavy water is a combination of heavy hydrogen and oxygen and is chemically known as deuterium oxide. It looks and tastes like ordinary water but it freezes at 3.8°C and boils at 101.4°C. The molecular weight of heavy water is 20 as compared to 18 for ordinary water; the density of heavy water is ten per cent greater than that of ordinary water.Although heavy water and ordinary water exhibit only small differences in their chemical and physical properties, there are large differences in their nuclear properties, the most important of which is the neutron moderating ratio, used to measure the ratio o f the slowing down power to the neutron capture characteristics. For heavy water the ratio is 21000 and for ordinary water it is 50. This high moderating ratio is essential for achieving a high neutron economy. Heavy water is, therefore, chosen as the moderating and heat transport fluid in the CANDU reactor."

"The Pierre Beauchemin Mine attained commercial production in January 1989, and went on to produce 23 968 ounces of gold for the year, 3% higher than forecast. Underground development was accelerated to prepare the way for the production of an estimated 40 000 ounces in 1989.IntroductionThe Pierre Beauchemin Mine is located nine miles west of the city of Rouyn-Noranda (Fig. I).As a result of the amalgamation with Sullivan Mines in October 1987, the mine is now entirely owned by Cambior Inc.The Eldrich deposit was discovered in 1953and began production in 1955, closing in 1962 following the decrease in gold prices and the simultaneous decrease in silica content in the ore, which was sold to the Noranda smelter for flux. A total of 717 000 tons grading 0.14 oz Au/t were produced during this period.From July 1984 to October 1987, an underground exploration program was carried out by Sullivan on the Eldrich mining concession and the nearby Flavel property. The first phase of the program included reinstallation of surface facilities and dewatering of the Eldrich Mine. Following the completion of the first phase, extensive exploration was carried out, including a major program of diamond drilling. It was then decided to deepen the shaft to a depth of 1800 ft to access a new zone called the No.5 Zone .Following the amalgamation with Sullivan in October 1987, Cambior assumed the role of operator for the project, and continued the shaft deepening work that had already been started. A feasibility study was completed in April 1988 and the Cambior board of directors approved a production decision for the Eldrich-Flavel project.The preproduction program extended from May to December 1988 and was aimed at preparing the stopes in the upper part of the mine and at developing the mine infrastructure at the bottom of the mine.The mine was officially opened in August 1988. Cambior renamed the project the Pierre Beauchemin Mine in recognition of Pierre Beauchemin's pioneer-work."

"In a recent publication (SAG 2015), we presented a non-conventional high pressure grinding roll (HPGR)-ball mill circuit as a lower capital cost alternative to the “standard” HPGR circuit. The circuit was designed for the treatment of a hard ore and relatively high tonnage (50,000 t/d). That paper provided details such as flowsheets, layouts, and equipment lists for the two options and compared their calculated capital costs demonstrating significant savings for the proposed circuit. This paper extends the analysis to a third option, a traditional semi-autogenous ball crushing circuit, giving the same level of details and now including the operating cost estimates for all three options for a more comprehensive analysis. Moreover, this work also provides information about the strengths and weaknesses of the non-conventional HPGR circuit when compared to the “standard” HPGR option.This study demonstrates that the proposed non-conventional HPGR-based circuit not only provides a lower overall capital costs for the project if compared to a “standard” HPGR circuit but also brings the capital cost to the level of the traditional semi-autogenous grinding (SAG)-ball mill circuits. In addition, the innovative HPGR circuit provides similar operational cost savings of the “standard” HPGR and thus a significant advantage when compared to the SAG option. With the current capital cost sensitivity for most greenfield projects, the proposed alternative circuit should help make HPGR-based circuits more competitive and thus promote the utilization of a technology that enables higher energy efficiency and reduced greenhouse gas emissions. INTRODUCTIONThe application of high pressure grinding roll (HPGR) technology in comminution circuits is well established for the processing of cement, diamonds and iron ore (Broeckmann & Gardula, 2005), and over the past 10–15 years, this technology has slowly been applied to hard ores in high-tonnage precious and base metal operations. Unfortunately, under the current economic climate, the ability to finance large capital projects has become very difficult and companies tend to have an easier time securing funding if the capital expenditures (CAPEX) are low with a proven process method. The traditional semi-autogenous grinding (SAG) mill / ball mill circuits easily fit into this mould, having been installed in countless plants around the world over the past 30 years with relatively low capital requirements. In contrast, it has been well-documented that HPGR-based circuits are capital intensive with complex material handling systems (Seidel, Logan, LeVier, & Veillette, 2006). Although these circuits benefit from reduced operating costs with the increase in energy efficiency and the elimination of steel grinding media (Rosario, Boyd, & Grundy, 2009), if the company is unable to secure financing to build the plant, these advantages remain out of reach. With the current trend to retrofit existing SAG circuits with a secondary crushing circuit to achieve design throughput, the opportunity to circumvent this gross inefficiency by making HPGR-based circuits more capital friendly would greatly benefit the industry."

A laboratory test has been developed for assessing the patential hazard from self-heating of sulphides. The technique consists in measuring the rate of self-heating, from near ambient temperature, of a 1-kg sample in an insulated chamber controlled at standard atmospheric conditions. The rate of oxygen consumption is monitored simultaneously. The paper describes the apparatus and test procedure, and reports data on various ores and mill products. Tailings known to have caused problems underground when used as backfill have shown heating rates of over 3°C/h. A preliminary hazard rating guide for backfill based on the known behaviour of several sulphide materials is presented.

FROM 1921 to 1939, the aeroplane played an increasingly important role in Canadian prospecting and mine development. This service has been interrupted by the war, but undoubtedly it will be accelerated in the postwar years, if suitable aircraft are available. The purpose of this paper will be to review the uses to which the aeroplane has been put in prospecting and development in the past, and its future possibilities as an aid in prospecting. If by review, and deduction, we get a clear picture of what we expect the prospecting plane to do, we may be able to arrive at a very close approximation of its required characteristics and, from this, an idea of costs. 'Function' is defined as the mode of action by which it (the aeroplane) fulfills its purpose. We will endeavour, therefore, first to find what this purpose is, or should be, so that our expectations will not be too limited nor too great-and then find, by analysis, what performance we require in an aeroplane to meet our reasonable expectations at an economic price.

Jinping I hydropower station is located in Sichuan Province in Southwest China. It is built on the Yalong River as a controlling cascade hydropower station in the middle and lower reaches, with power generation as its major function. Jinping I arch dam concerns many engineering issues and has attracted worldwide attentions due to its huge scale and unique settings. It is one of the most challenging projects in China with its 305 meters high arch dam and complex geological conditions for construction, including large-scale tectonic faults, intensively unloaded rock masses and geological asymmetry in its foundation. At present, the concrete arch dam construction has been completed and preliminarily impounded, most of the foundation treatments have been implemented, and four of six generator units had been put into operation in July 2014. In this paper, the analytical methods, design concepts, treatment measures and technical features of strengthening the geological defects in the dam foundation will be presented. Upon geological investigation into the dam foundation, a few large-scale weak discontinuities are observed. The rock masses in the left dam foundation are intensively unloaded, approximately to the horizontal depth of 150–300 m. These serious geological defects lead to a geological asymmetry on the left and right banks, and thus some major difficulties of dam construction are encountered. The influences of geological defects on the dam construction and safety are analyzed comprehensively, followed by the concepts and methods of treatment design. Based on this, the treatment methods of the weak rock masses and discontinuities are carefully determined by numerical analysis and scheme optimization, including the concrete cushion, concrete replacement grids, drainage system, anti-seepage curtains and consolidation grouting, which work together to enhance the strength and integrity of the dam foundation. Evaluations and calibrations through geo-mechanical model tests in combination with field monitoring results in early impoundment period show that the arch dam and its foundation are generally stable and function normally, which suggests that the research methods and treatment design schemes are reasonable and effective. The proposed treatment methods and concepts in the context are helpful for similar complex rock projects.

The carbon steel casings of Heat Recovery Steam Generators (HRSGs) in a co¬generation plant were found to have developed cracks that originated on the inside surfaces. The HRSGs receive hot exhaust gases from the primary Gas Turbines (GTs), which are fuelled with pipeline natural gas. The GTs was initially operating without any suppression of nitrogen oxides (NOx). After being in service for about two years, some of the cracks were found to have penetrated right through the 1/4 in. thick casings. The casings are fitted with insulation on the inside (hot gas side). Examination of steel samples cut from the casing walls revealed (i) fine cracks propagating through the steel from the inside surfaces, and (ii) the presence of relatively large amounts of nitrate ion on the inside surfaces. It was concluded that the nitrate ions originated from nitric acid that was condensing on the relatively cool walls of the casings behind the insulation. Nitric acid was formed in the GT exhaust gases by the combination of water vapour (formed from combustion of the hydrocarbon fuel and from moisture in the combustion air) and nitrogen oxides (formed from nitrogen and oxygen in the combustion air).

"As real estate for new development in urban settings becomes scarce, commercial high rises are being constructed above open passenger rail tracks and vehicular roadways. Rail and roadway overbuilds are treated as tunnels requiring emergency ventilation systems for train or automobile and truck fires. The value of floor space in residential and office towers poses challenges to engineers responsible for designing fan rooms and shafts for tunnel ventilation systems within the towers. This paper describes a case study of the unique incorporation of tunnel ventilation fan plants in the overbuild structure of a passenger railyard and an adjacent roadway.INTRODUCTIONTunnel ventilation systems are required for passenger rail and transit (subway) tunnels by the NFPA 130 Standard for Fixed Guideway Transit and Passenger Rail Systems, and the NFPA 502 Standard for Road Tunnels, Bridges, and Other Limited Access Highways requires tunnel ventilation systems for vehicular (road) tunnels. Passenger rail and transit (subway) tunnels are typically ventilated with a series of shafts placed longitudinally along the tunnels to provide piston relief for normal train operations and emergency ventilation of train fires utilizing reversible axial flow fans. The shafts are incorporated in dedicated ventilation buildings that house the tunnel ventilation fans and starters, switchgear to power the fans and other equipment and systems in the building, Programmable Logic Controllers (PLCs) to control fan operation with Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) software, and HVAC fans and ductwork to ventilate the spaces in the building. These ventilation buildings may also provide access to the tunnels below with ingress/egress stairs for use by first responders and firefighters entering the tunnels and train or transit system passengers exiting the tunnels in an emergency. CORROSION of metals, for the purpose of this talk, may be divided into two general classes, namely, atmospheric and chemical. Atmospheric corrosion is caused by the natural agents -water, air, salt, and temperature -as well as by the agents arising from industrial operations which pollute the atmosphere. Chemical corrosion affects metals in refineries and chemical plants where severe conditions exist due to .acids, alkalies, salts, solvents, gases, ?steam, etc. A special condition is encountered on road equipment and motor vehicles due to the large amounts of corrosive salts which are used on our roads in the winter. Exposure to corrosive conditions such as those referred to above causes metal to be destroyed and, therefore, it has to be protected. The non-metallic or organic coatings used to protect the metal are themselves destroyed ultimately by these same conditions. Since all types of organic coatings do not have the same kind and degree of resistance to degradation, a particular kind of -coating must be used for a particular set of conditions in order to obtain the maximum benefit. In ?addition to the above mentioned agents, organic coatings are degraded ?by sun-light, which is probably the severest single factor in the breakdown of organic coatings exposed outdoors. We can divide organic coatings, in a general way, into the following classes: (1) Conventional coatings, and (2) Special coatings.

"THE GOLD MINING REGION of Timmins - Val d'Or, astride the Ontario-Quebec border, has long suffered the effects of rising costs during the period when the U.S. price of gold was fixed at $35 per ounce. The federal government, through such assistance programs as that set up under the Emergency Gold Mining Assistance Act (E.G.M.A. ) in 1948, has subsidized the gold mining communities of Canada for a total of over $300 million to March 31, 1972. Of this, the Timmins - Val d'Or ""gold belt"" has received more than twothirds, almost $220 million. In spite of these continuous subsidies, only 12 gold mines are still producing in the Timmins - Val d'Or belt, whereas 71 mines have received subsidies for some period since 1948. The vital question is how the communities previously supported principally by the mining of gold will survive in the long run, as many of the older mines either are already depleted or are quickly becoming so. With the rising price of gold on the 'free market in recent months, prospects look a little brighter for the time being. Even with the increased official price of U.S. $38, which made the maximum government subsidized price about $48 per ounce, gold mines have not sold any gold to the government since January 1972 and some stopped doing so months before that. The populace of the region has not been enthusiastic about relocation nor about extensive retraining programs in the past and probably will not be in the future. So, when the remaining gold mines become depleted, the old problems of community depression will remain."

Drilling high-pressure/high-temperature wells in salt rock formations is still a challenge for the energy industry. Creep and solubility is part of the salt rock physical-chemical behaviour, which must be considered in the design of the wells. The stress redistribution caused by drilling, in addition to thermallyactivated processes, triggers creep deformation, leading to borehole closure and the imposition of loads on the casing. The drilling fluid is designed by computer modeling in order to control the creep strain rate to a limit which allows the drilling operations and the casing setting. Depending upon the composition of the drilling fluid, chemical reactions on the salt wall may occur, especially in case of water-based fluids in highly soluble salt rocks. In those cases, cavities by dissolution (washouts) can be generated and the casing column remains uncovered by the cementation and laterally unconfined along the cavity length. This scenario is propitious to the loss of integrity of the casing due to phenomena such as plastic collapse, buckling and non-uniform loading on the casing provoked by the closure of salt formation around it. The casing should remain intact during the wellbore life-time. In this work, a section of a typical well crossing salt formation composed by halite and carnallite is considered. An idealized-cylindrical washout cavity inside a highly soluble salt layer is assumed. The purpose here is to evaluate the effect of the dimensions of the cavity on the integrity of the casing. Several typical diameters and lengths of the cavity are adopted. Numerical analyses are carried out with an in-house finite-element system composed by the pre-processor MTOOL 3D®, the simulator ANVEC 3D® and the post-processor POS 3D®. Salt rocks are modeled as visco-elastic materials. Creep is simulated by the Double Mechanism Creep Law, widely employed in Brazilian salt rock mechanics research. Cement and casing (steel) are modeled as elasto-plastic materials described by the Mohr-Coulomb and the von Mises criteria, respectively. Casing integrity is evaluated with respect to vertical and horizontal displacements. Vertical displacements imposed to the casing can provoke the failure of the column by plastic collapse or by buckling. Besides that, horizontal displacements of salt due to creep closure shall lead to the undesirable contact with the casing. Failure envelopes based on displacements are generated. The results of the simulations have shown that the casing failure by plastic collapse occurs preferentially in short columns, as well as buckling occurs in long and slender columns. The occurrence of both failure modes is more frequent in large-diameter cavities. Additionally, failure caused by contact between salt and casing occurs preferentially in short-diameter cavities.

The Key Lake nickel-uranium deposits are situated within the Wollaston domain of the Churchill structural province. The host rocks of the two orebodies are of Aphebian and Helikian age. The orebodies occur mainly within a 5.2-km-Iong, northeast-trending zone which coincides with the intersection of the sub-Athabasca unconformity and a reverse fault striking east-northeast. The principal controls of mineralization are structural and lithostratigraphic (i.e., post-Athabasca faults, the sub-Athabasca unconformity and graphitic metapelites in the lower Aphebian, close to the Aphebian/Archean unconformity). Grades of up to 35% U3O8 and 20% Ni are recorded over intervals of up to 2 m. Some hypogene zonation exists and the nickel mineralization tends to underlie the high-grade uranium ore. The ore minerals include pitchblende, a-U307, coffinite, gersdorffite, millerite, niccolite, bravoite, zoisite, sericite, chlorite and kaolinite. The kaolinite is a post-ore, supergene alteration product. Chemical studies of the sub-Athabasca paleo weathering profile sho w that regolithization is characterized by depletion in Si02 and K20 and concomitant enrichment in Al203 and perhaps MgO. In the paleoweathering profile the ferromagnes ian minerals are chloritized, the Ksfeldspars sericitized and the plagioclase saussuritized. Preliminary geochronologic data from the ores reveal U/Pb ages of -1228 my, - 960 my and 89 my, and Rb /Sr data indicate basement ages of -1850 my and - 1372 my. Aphebian pelitic protoliths, carrying U and Ni, may have released some metals during post-Hudsonian weathering, and minor concentration in structural and geochemical traps may have taken place prior to the deposition of the Athabasca strata. However, it is felt that the bulk ofthe ore-grade mineralization wasgenerated after the deposition of the Athabasca formation and after faulting, probably during a major regional thermal/ intrusive episode of Grenvillian age. Several episodes of remobilization took place between 1228and 89 my ago.

Bioremediation has been accepted as a treatment technique for groundwater contamination in subsurface soils and shows promise for contaminated fractured rock environments. Biological growth in fractured rock is expected to occur predominantly as biofilms attach to the fracture surfaces. Biofilms in rock fractures are subject to a complex system of forces and other phenomenon due to the dynamics of the bulk fluid in which they grow. In this paper, through the applications of computational fluid dynamics (CFD) to rock fractures, where the boundaries are rough and the flow is complex, a precise analysis was conducted of the interaction of a fluid flow and the rock fracture. Specifically, hydraulic parameters and velocity profiles of an actual rock fracture were calculated and compared to a fracture of equivalent aperture.
