The Environmental Excellence in Exploration (E3) project is driven by the recognition that the minerals industry can only maintain its long term viability by ensuring its continued access to lands to explore for, and develop, new mines. Widespread implementation of sound environmental management practices by the exploration community and improved education and understanding of that by stakeholders will help substantially in accomplishing this, and E3 is designed to meet these needs. Exploration crews are now viewed as ambassadors for the global mining community. Their performance in managing the environmental aspects of an exploration program can demonstrate a commitment on the part of the international mining sector to environmentally responsible exploration and mining. We have all observed that failure to behave responsibly can alienate local residents, encourage anti-mining NGOs and jeopardize development. As the saying goes, ?you don?t get a second chance to make a first impression?, and we want to make a favourable first impression. The E3 project is focused on creating an electronic manual, the e-manual, which will provide rapid access to the most up-to-date information on environmental management practices for minerals exploration globally. The e-manual will reflect current thinking and practices in environmental management. It will be richly illustrated with actual examples that reflect the realities of exploration. It will strive to identify the key environmental issues and concerns that apply to most exploration projects, and identify other sources of relevant information useful to field practice. It is our belief that E3, or something very like it, is central to ensuring that the industry survives the current challenges to its viability. E3 will be a cornerstone of the mining industry?s drive to sustainability simply stated, if we are not permitted to explore for mines, there will be none of them at some point in the relatively near future.

In this study the effects of Si content on mechanical and thermal fatigue properties of Al-Si casting alloys were investigated. Repeated heating and cooling cycles were applied on the samples at 230°C to develop thermal fatigue cracks. Crack growth mechanisms and microstructural influences were investigated by optical and scanning electron microscopy. Thermal fatigue behaviors were improved successively by increasing of silicon content up to 7wt%. However, addition of more than 9wt% silicon decreased the thermal shock resistance of the alloy. Silicon contents of about 9wt% presented the best mechanical and thermal fatigue resistance in the alloy.

The systems of geophysical monitoring have been already put into operation at coal mines and ore mines. Since at present it is rather difficult to conduct mine experiments; it is necessary to start a new step in joining of geomechanics and seismic. The linking geomechanical and geophysical monitoring at coal mines and ore mines today became possible due to progress in development of numerical methods of modeling of stress state and technology for processing of seismic information. This paper describes one potential step in linking geomechanical and seismic monitoring at coal mines and ore mines.

This paper provides a brief overview of evolution of deformations, stresses, and pore pressures due to different excavation stages during construction of an URL. Excavation of a rockmass develops a damage zone of finite width around the excavated zone which is associated with changes in permeability and which affects the fluid flow mechanism. In this study, a coupled hydromechanical (HM) analysis has been conducted for a water saturated porous rock mass which has been created by sequential excavation and backfill of vertical disposal pit of an URL. For this purpose, an Atomic Energy of Canada Limited?s in-floor concept for a deep geologic repository suitable for Indian conditions has been used. Changes in rock deformations, stresses, strains and mechanically induced pore pressure in an undrained condition, during excavation, as well as those caused by mechanically induced rock deformations after backfill of the disposal pit, have been modeled. A three-dimensional finite difference tool FLAC3D has been used for the analysis.

Mechanical/Electrical/Piping (MEP) systems, due to their complexity and diversity, are the most intricate part of building construction. This being the case, Combined Services Drawings (CSD) and Structure, Electric and Mechanic(SEM) drawings can ensure that all coordination issues are resolved prior to construction. Construction companies attempt to apply Building Information Modeling (BIM) to manage and integrate engineering information and solutions efficiently into the CSD and SEM processes to enhance the accuracy of design and the efficiency of review. There are several powerful commercial tools, such as Bentley Navigator, Autodesk Navisworks, and Tekla BIMsight, that can review the integrated BIM model and detect conflicts in systems, and allow planners to correct the conflict issues one at a time. However, for increasing numbers of conflicts, this may be inefficient, and requires them to be arranged in a list according to impact and seriousness before solving them. For this reason, this research implements a module for conflict impact assessment based on rule-based reasoning to classify and weigh conflict impact and seriousness, and highlight the conflicted objects in the BIM system in different colors depending on their conflict type and seriousness during the analysis. This system not only detects and lists possible conflicts and errors, but also sorts them according to the severity of impact and conflict type. Planners can effectively modify the BIM models according to these conflicts as they are listed and visualized in the BIM system. If these conflicts, such as pipeline interference and problems of insufficient space, can be avoided in the early stages of planning, it facilitates the achievement of project objectives in quality, scheduling, and cost.

The spatial coincidence of the seven anomalies is obvious, even though the self-potential is offset northward. Because the ratio, as an indicator of conductivity, is a relative estimate at best, concise interpretation is limited in almost every instance to the location of a conductor or conductor axis. When related to the initial phase of an exploration program, magnitudes and ratios similar to those obtained from any one of the methods described, would be sufficiently attractive to warrant further investigation. The compilation shown is an empirical comparison of actual field results and no emphasis has intentionally been placed on the relative merits of one method in respect to another. Too many additional factors, i.e., size, depth and conductivity of overburden, etc., that cannot unequivocally be answered, enter into such a comparison before a relative evaluation can be made.

"The otherwise waste heat in many water streams in the mining industry can be used to provide space heating of adjacent infrastructure including laboratories, workshops, and offices. This can be achieved by using heat pump systems, which can work as a replacement or in conjunction with existing space heating. In the example investigated—process cooling streams at an ore smelter—the analysis provided illustrates that annual heating costs can be 19% lower and a simultaneous 62% reduction in CO2 emissions can be achieved.RÉSUMÉ Dans l’industrie minière, la chaleur qui serait normalement perdue des circuits d’eau pourrait servir à chauffer des structures adjacentes incluant les laboratoires, les ateliers et les bureaux. Kansanshi Copper Smelter commenced operation in March 2015. The smelter features four Peirce- Smith Converters (PSCs) operated in a three hot, two blowing configuration. This paper describes some of the process automation and design features implemented to maximize operational and environmental performance. To ensure that the converters were easy to operate, efficient, and were protected in emergency situations such as power failures or loss of tuyere air supply a significant focus was placed on automated sequences initiated by “one button” operator commands or otherwise automatically by the Distributed Control System (DCS). Examples include: main converter roll-in and roll-out sequences; emergency roll-out in the event of power failure; and the charging sequences for reagents (silica and reverts). Other automated features configured for the PSCs were specifically aimed at maximizing converter capacity and reducing the environmental impact from fugitive emissions. These features include: “one button” in-stack charging; automated restriction of blowing rate based on the available acid plant capacity; and fully-automated control logic for the Secondary Ventilation System. In-stack charging allows anode furnace oxide slag to be poured into the PSCs while the converters are still blowing and still sending off-gas to the acid plant. PSC Secondary Ventilation control logic was configured to require minimum input from the operators while ensuring maximum utilization of the available draft from the ventilation system. Highly automated PSC controls contribute to high utilization, averaging 41.2 in-stack hours per day. INTRODUCTION Kansanshi Copper Smelter (KCS) is located near Solwezi at Kansanshi copper mine in Zambia's Northwestern province. The smelter treats concentrate produced at Kansanshi mine as well as Sentinel mine located 150 km west of Solwezi. Four Peirce-Smith Converters (PSCs) are installed at KCS. The nominal capacity of each converter is to treat 350 t of copper matte and produce up to 250 t of blister copper per batch. Normally three PSCs are hot, with two able to operate (produce off-gas), and the third converter on hot standby. The fourth converter is normally under cold repairs. The blister charge size is relatively low for the matte charged due to the unavailability of tank house or other high copper scrap.

The Problem The Don deposit is a series of two sub-vertical zones that pose a number of challenges with respect to modeling and interpolation. The first challenge is that, based on data and observations, the mineralization and, more importantly, the grade is layered or banded and is stratigraphically controlled. The second challenge is that, due to the undulations of the deposit and extreme changes in dip, using a standard oriented ellipse to guide the estimation process is not appropriate and does not result in an estimate that is representative on a local scale. In order to solve this problem an adapted methodology of relative elevation modelling, has been devised to effectively model and estimate deposits faced with these challenges. "Introduction The Saskatchewan Power Corporation is a provincial crown corporation which operates under a mandate to supply all customers within Saskatchewan with electricity and natural gas. The Saskatchewan Power Corporation operates two coal mines within the province of Saskatchewan. The Souris Valley Mine is located a few miles south of the city of Estevan and produces approximately 300 000 Mg of lignite per year. The lignite is shipped about four kilometres by truck and burned at the 882 MW Boundary Dam Power Station, also owned by the Saskatchewan Power Corporation. The Poplar River Mine is located just south-west of the town of Coronach, Saskatchewan which is some 190 kilo metres west of Estevan. This mine produces approximately 1 675 000 Mg of lignite per year. The lignite is shipped seven miles by rail to the Saskatchewan Power Corporation's Poplar River Power Station. The Poplar River Mine is the sole sup plier of fuel to the Poplar River Power Station, which generates some 300 MW of electrical power. A second 300 MW unit is due to be commissioned at the Poplar River Power Station in mid-1983 and the Poplar River Mine will have doubled its capacity to approximately 3 350 000 Mg per year by that time: Souris Valley Mine Geology The Souris Valley Mine extracts lignite from the Estevan seam of the Ravenscrag Formation. This formation is of Tertiary age and was deposited during the Paleocene Epoch. The Ravenscrag Formation outcrops throughout southern Saskatachewan and all coal mined in the province occurs in this formation. Ravenscrag sediments are deltaic in origin and are composed of a series of fine sands, silts, clay and lignite deposits."

A New Field for the Mining Industry A new field for the mining industry is in prospect. This is the recovery of the petroleum which has been left in the ground in the older oil fields whose yield has declined until they are no longer profitable to operate in the ordinary way. The fact that an oil field has reached the economic limit for operation by pumping does not necessarily 'mean that the oil has ? been exhausted. In many such cases not over one-fifth, or even one-tenth, of the total oil content of the field may have been taken out when this stage has been reached. This means that there exists a large reserve of oil which can be recovered by whatever process best takes advantage of the natural conditions under which the oil occurs. Mine drainage is one of the processes by which this oil may be recovered. Its relative importance will depend partly on the ingenuity and wide-awakeness of mining engineers, and on mining capital. The opportunity is undoubtedly at hand. In order that we may be in a position to judge the possible advantages of mining methods for the recovery of this oil, I have reviewed, on the following pages, the methods now in use, and have discussed the physical conditions of the reservoir rocks in which the oil is found, and the suitability of the various recovery processes, in use or proposed, in the light of these reservoir conditions.

There exists a huge potential for operational improvement through the inference of patterns, correlations and cause-effect relationships within these records. In the spring of 1977, Revenue Canada announced its intention to proceed in 1978 with a plan to impute a taxable benefit on interest-free and low-interest loans provided to employees. Such loan arrangements are often an important aspect of the compensation packages provided by many companies to their employees. Since the original announcement, there have been many submissions to Revenue Canada opposing this change, and the Finance Minister has now brought down a compromise solution with the introduction of a proposed amendment to the Income Tax Act. The amendment, which would not take effect until the 1979 taxation year, would require an employee, a shareholder or a related person to include a benefit in income measured as the difference between the interest on any such loan computed at bank prime rate and any interest actually paid. Only the amount of such a benefit in excess of $500 in a particular year would be required to be included in income. Of particular interest is the exclusion from these benefit rules of loans up to $50,000 in respect of the purchase of a house on the relocation of an employee and loans provided for the purchase of shares of an employer corporation.

In this paper the utilisation of building information models (BIM) and construction automation on building sites is discussed. A lot of research has been carried out to develop new applications for using BIM to assist construction site planning, different operations and logistics. The methods of production control and management on site utilize BIM together with machine control and navigation systems. In Finland machine control systems and the automation of construction equipment is widely used in infrastructure construction. Recently similar methods have been introduced also in building construction. This paper describes some latest Finnish examples where BIM-software is used for the planning, execution and control of building construction operations. University of Oulu has studied methods and technologies to capitalize BIM-models. The research has been mainly in infrastructure construction but the activities have recently been extended to building construction. In this paper a BIM-based tower crane operation and control system is discussed as a case study. The aim of this study was to highlight the potential areas were automation can increase the crane productivity and improve site operations and logistics. The construction site managers and tower crane operators interviewed in this study were experienced in using BIM-models on site.

"An aluminum A356 compressor impeller was sand cast using the Low Pressure technique. The casting was limited in size (170 mm in diameter, 1.2 kg in weight) and very intricate in shape thus making 3D mold printing particularly favorable; indeed, producing this part by the traditional pattern-core box route would involve mounting 12 cores inside the mold while stringent dimensional tolerances are required as the impeller blades are only 2 mm thick. Consequently the molds were produce on the X-One MFlex printer of Quebec Metallurgy Center - CMQ. A dozen castings were produced with different casting temperatures and filling times so that it was possible to assess under which conditions complete filling of the mold cavity would be achieved. Filling and solidification modeling allowed predicting misruns and metallurgical properties inside the A356 (AlSi7Mg04) casting.INTRODUCTION Recent advancements in additive manufacturing enable foundries to produce molds without the tooling (pattern and core boxes) necessary when conventional technology is used (Eyad, 2016). This is particularly advantageous when dealing with intricate shapes and/or when a limited number of parts must be produced within a few days rather than in 5 weeks. An additional advantage is gained when producing prototypes (Johnson, 2016) as changes are much less costly and time consuming when made on a numerical 3D drawing rather than on patterns and core boxes. 3D printing is normally economical for a small number of parts; however, if the part is not too big and very intricate in shape such as the part that will be studied in the present work, 3D printing can be economical even for an important number of castings to be produced. On the other hand, low pressure casting is a high integrity casting process in which the mold cavity is filled from the bottom via a transfer tube in which the liquid aluminum rises under the pressure applied at the surface of the melt as illustrated in Figure 1. The filling can thus be precisely controlled, eliminating the turbulence created when the mold is filled from the top (gravity casting). Also, the pressure applied on the melt during solidification results in excellent feeding of the casting when conditions of directional solidification are met. In the present work, the compressor impeller shown in Figure 2 will be sand cast by low pressure."
