"THE petroleum industry in Canada has been experiencing considerable difficulty in filling its manpower requirements during the last few years, and because of the rapidly expanding nature of the industry it is concerned about the supply that will be available to fill the needs of the future. As the oil industry is one of the more technically oriented industries, the most acute problem exists primarily in the field of profession-al/technical personnel. This is particularly true in the production and exploration side of the business, because it employs the highest percentage of this type of personnel. Let me illustrate this by giving you some figures reported by the Alberta Bureau of Statistics as of December, 1965 -out of a total of 9,641 male employees engaged in oil producing and geological and geophysical operations in Alberta, 3,021, or 31 per cent, were classified as engineers, geologists, geophysicists, managers and other professional personnel. No figures are available for 1946 to make a direct comparison of the expansion of the industry over the past twenty 466 years, but it is doubtful whether more than 100 professional/technical people were engaged in producing in Alberta at that time"

"With ever-increasing global demand for mineral resources, mining companies are considering developing deeper, more complex and lower grade ore bodies. Recent years have seen the transition from surface to underground mass mining operations to access deeper resources, with mass mining methods such as block and panel caving being favoured due to the tonnages and economics achievable when dealing with lower grade ore. However, the rock engineering interactions involved with such plans are complex and challenging given the significant disturbance caused to the surface environment. If not properly accounted for, the unexpected propagation of a cave breaking through to surface or the differential surface displacements otherwise produced may threaten the safety and integrity of overlying mine and civil infrastructure.This paper reports the findings of a comprehensive research programme focussed on investigating and integrating new developments in remote sensing characterization and monitoring technologies with state-of-the-art numerical modelling to better manage the challenges and geo-risk associated with the transitioning from open pit to underground mass mining. Procedures were developed to integrate discrete fracture networks (DFN) into finite-element/discrete-element analyses to simulate the influence of rock mass fabric on cave propagation and the evolution of caving-induced surface subsidence and step-path failure of large open pit slopes through the progressive failure of rock bridges. The results clearly showed that caving-induced surface deformations tend to be discontinuous and asymmetric due to large movements around the cave controlled by geologic structures, rock mass heterogeneity and topographic effects. Although parallel investigations of empirical design charts used to predict caving-induced deformations were found to be moderately sufficient for assessing the extent of macro deformations directly above the undercut (i.e. caving collapse features), numerical modelling was found to provide the only means to confidently estimate the lateral extent of smaller strain subsidence.These results were further supported by the use of high-resolution synthetic aperture radar (SAR) data to monitor the ground deformations associated with block caving production, and to use these to calibrate and constrain a series of predictive 3-D numerical models focussed on Rio Tinto's Palabora mine in South Africa. The InSAR data was obtained from Canada’s recently launched RADARSAT-2. The close fit achieved between the predictive 3-D numerical model and InSAR monitoring data demonstrates the significant value of InSAR calibrated 3-D numerical models applied to subsidence prediction.Collectively, the results from this research programme have helped to further the characterization, assessment and understanding of mass mining-induced subsidence, and its evolution, by addressing existing limitations in the use of empirical and numerical design methods. The limitations and uncertainty arising from mine site data were detailed, specifically the representation of mine geology, rock mass properties, in-situ stresses and cave propagation, together with means to constrain these inputs and calibrate sophisticated 3-D numerical models through back analysis and integration with high resolution monitoring data."

Mining operations, especially surface coal mines, have great impacts on the local ecosystem and the environment. However, it has been a common practice in mine design that the economic evaluation considers only the operating and capital costs, while the costs incurred due to ecological damage are left out. Such practice underestimates the total cost of mining and ignores the difference in ecological impacts between different mine design alternatives. With growing interest in sustainable development, the mining industry is under increasing pressure to operate not only based on economic and engineering principles but also on principles of sustainability. Therefore, estimating ecological costs of mining and considering such costs in the mine design process is an important step towards reducing ecological impacts at the design stage. The objective of this paper is to quantify the ecological costs of open pit coal mining and to demonstrate the influence of such costs on the ultimate pit design. The ecological costs of mining are estimated based on the areas and types of land damaged by mining activities and the carbon emission from energy consumption. Four major components of ecological cost are identified, namely, lost value of direct eco-services, lost value of indirect eco-services, prevention and restoration costs, and the cost of carbon emission from energy consumption. Necessary equations are given for estimating these costs. An algorithm is described for ultimate pit optimization in coal deposits with near-horizontal coal seams. A case study is presented in which the ultimate pits with and without ecological costs are optimized and compared to show the influence of ecological costs on the pit design outcome.

In today's mining industry, it is possible to retrieve, from small-diameter holes, geophysical data for qualitative interpretation in exploration and quantitative interpretation in the development of orebodies. The primary objectives in the exploration stage are to identify where, within a hole, economic minerals are, and to help in lithological interpretations. Other aspects, which are more quantitative, are the interpretation of downhole logs for parameters which can be used in surface geophysical methods (i.e. density for gravity surveys, acoustic velocities for seismic surveys, and magnetic susceptibility for airborne and ground magnetic surveys). Recent advances in equipment design, portability and durability have made downhole logging in exploration more inexpensive and reliable. This new equipment is being used to generate very precise quantitative results. This is especially true on uranium development projects. The interpretation of gamma logs for eUJOS values has finally become precise enough that they have begun to replace chemical values in reserve calculations. Another part of development data is density and equilibrium information, which, with today's technology, is being derived from downhole probing. In the years to come, the trends for many metals are toward neutron activation techniques, or "in-situ assaying", and the use of multiple logs for better lithological and physical rock property determinations.

"Canadian Royalties Inc. owns and exploits the Nunavik Nickel project: a copper and nickel deposit in Nunavik, Quebec. Froth flotation is used to produce nickel and copper concentrates. As is the case at other operations, the presence of magnesium is detrimental to the flotation products. In the past year, the exploitation of a new deposit has increased magnesium in the feed. Thus, it has been challenging to meet the required ratio in the final nickel concentrate. In search for a consistent solution for this problematic, an empirical flotation simulator making use of selectivity curves was developed. The circuit was expressed as a system of linear equations, which considered the distribution of copper, nickel and gangue minerals in the different streams. The relative quantities of each mineral are given by the separation efficiency curves of the various banks in the circuit. Three sources of data were used to calibrate the simulator: historical plant data (metallurgical balance), infinite dilution bench-scale flotation tests, and direct sampling of flotation cells. The calibrated separation curves were used to predict the recovery of the different species based on a single mineral recovery. Validation of the simulator showed good fit for the valuable minerals. The simulator was then used to infer the optimal operating conditions of the flotation circuit to optimise magnesium oxide content of the nickel concentrate. Simulation of two re-arrangements of the circuit gave a promising solution with a Fe:MgO ratio 2.42 times higher than the minimum value.INTRODUCTION Canadian Royalties Inc. owns and exploits the Nunavik Nickel project: a copper and nickel deposit in Nunavik, Quebec. The mining sequence at Noranda?s Bell-Allard mine calls for two mining fronts retreating toward a central pillar known as the Retreat Zone between pyramids A and C. It is clear from numerical modelling and rock mass characterization that the induced stress level in the pillar will exceed the rock mass capacity. A mining plan was developed including the re-dimensioning of stopes in the Retreat Zone, additional ground support and instrumentation in order to ensure the safety of the workforce and to maximize ore recovery while minimizing production delays. The mining strategy consists in allowing the rock mass to fracture and fail progressively while maintaining control of the existing openings with the appropriate support. A systematic analysis of rockbursting and caving hazards was conducted for all accesses and stopes in order to plan ground support and instrumentation needs.

"The mining and mineral industries have been, and remain, a major component of the Canadian economy. There are approximately 560 producing mining establishments of which there are some 130 metal mines and an equal number of non-metal mines, the balance being quarries for stone, sand and gravel. For 17 metals and minerals, Canada ranks within the top five as a world producer. There are 29 metallurgical plants. Employment in mining, smelting and refining was about 150000 in 1990. Mineral production, including coal, is about $20 billion. Exports up to the metal stage amount to $15 billion providing a positive trade balance of some $10 billion.The producing industry has a wide diversity of products. The companies range from small single mining operations to large multinationals. In terms of technology the industry has always been in the forefront of cost-effective practice, either using home-grown innovation or freely importing technology from around the world,The Mining Industry Technology Council (MITEC) makes an annual survey of the exploration and R&D expenditures of the senior mining industry that is the mining companies that are involved in mineral production from their existing mines. It does not include those companies solely involved in exploration using funds raised through equity sales.Table 1 shows the actual R&D and exploration expenditures as a per cent of sales. R&D shows a rising trend since 1988although the drop in value of output due to lower prices must be recognized as contributing to the increase. The point about this compilation is that the mining industry re-invests some 4070 of its sales in both exploration and R&D in order to sustain itself. Exploration for the renewal of metal inventories for future mining is a process unique to mining. It is not classified as R&D, and the necessity for this investment goes unrecognized by those who state that the industry does not do enough R&D."

THE Gunnar Gold Mines property is on the west shore of Beresford lake, in the Rice Lake mining division, southeastern Manitoba. Gold was first discovered in place in the Rice-Beresford Lakes area in 1911 on the Gabrielle claim, now included in the San Antonio Mines property at Rice lake. Following an eastward trend of favourable prospecting ground, promising showings were next staked in the vicinity of Long lake during the years 1915 and 1916. At that time, William Walton and associates, among them Gilbert LaBine, staked the Eldorado vein, north of Long lake, and Eldorado Gold Mines, Limited, was formed to develop the property a Company that, later, was to become widely known through successful operation of its radium-silver mine at Great Bear lake, Northwest Territories. Continuing eastward from Long lake, Walton and his partners, Gunnar Berg, Leo Seaberg, and Wm. Quesnel, staked claims during the years 1920-24 in the vicinity of Beresford lake which, later, were to become incorporated into the Gunnar Gold Mines property. The presence of gold-bearing quartz on these claims had been known from the time they were staked, but an opportunity to consolidate them into a group was not forth-coming until early in the year 1933. Although promising gold showings had been disclosed during the performance of assessment work on individual claims, no continuous mineralization having mine-making possibilities was discovered until after the consolidation of the entire group. From this stage onward, progress was rapid. Active exploration was begun on August 1st, 1933, and late in October James Houston reported favourably on the property. On October 27th, Gunnar Gold Mines, Limited, was incorporated in the Province of Ontario to develop and operate the property. The Company is also registered in Manitoba. The authorized capitalization is 3,000,000 shares of $1.00 par value. Gilbert LaBine was appointed president of the Company, with James Houston as mine manager. Following completion of a diamond-drilling programme, planned in 1933, it was decided to install a mine plant capable of carrying development to a depth of 1,000 feet. A transmission line, 5 miles in length, was built to the Great Falls-Central Manitoba line of the Manitoba Power Company, Limited.

Zinc production by Cominco Ltd. began in Trail in 1916 at a rate of 55 metric tonnes per day (t/d) and was increased ,in several increments until now electrowinning capacity approaches 750 t/d. The last increment, 40-t/d high-productivity electrowinning plant, was commissioned in 1974. In this paper, the design and operating experience with both the existing electrowinning plant and the new high-productivity plant are described.

This is in direct contradiction to the generally accepted philosophy of tube-mill grinding, which is based upon an enormous amount of experiment carried on in different parts of the world. Personally, I have no faith in the reliability of these conclusions of the authors. (Incidentally, the two circuits compared consist of six mills each of which the change in the hook-up is only in the last three mills-in one case, these three mills are in closed circuit and in the other, open or series circuit. Hence the last three mills are alone responsible for the alleged improvement, which means that the improvement in these three mills amounts to at least 18.8 per cent). The value of these figures depends upon the reliability of the work, of the measurements and the calculations of the authors. As very little information is contained in this Addendum concerning the methods of the work and the details of the measurements, it is necessary, in order to form an estimate of this reliability, to study carefully the previous paper published in the July, 1940, BULLETIN(3). Referring to the original paper, the present paper has this to say (bottom of page 379): "Here it may be remarked that we have made more money for Lake Shore digging into and forming the report than in obtaining the figures and data, and so far have never gone back to work on it without a resulting Lake Shore profit". Let me state that I, so far, have never gone back to work on it without finding more discrepancies and inconsistencies and illogical reasoning. In my first contribution to the discussion of the first paper, which discussion was published on page 355 and following, in the July, 1941, BULLETIN, I pointed out discrepancies and inconsistencies and illogical reasoning.

The first application of High Pressure Grinding Rolls was in 1985 at a cement plant, for the purpose of capacity improvement. Then various circuit configurations were derived to achieve a reduction in overall specific energy consumption, by transferring more of the grinding required to the HPGR. In most circuit configurations, the recycle of fines is required for effective breakage between the rollers. By increasing the fines amount in the feed material to a specific level within the recycling load, a uniform material bed is created and a higher pressure gradient along the roller width is obtained, resulting in compact flakes, including more fines. The fines recycle results in enhancement of the interparticle breakage. This paper will discuss the effect of the feed size distribution on HPGR performance.

"Abstract - The East Sullivan Stock (ESS) is a small, composite felsic alkaline pluton of presumed late Archean age in the Val d’Or mining district. Three main facies have been distinguished: monzonite sensu stricto, porphyritic monzonite, and green trachytic porphyry. This monzonitic group of rocks is of relatively homogeneous composition with high abundances of Na2O, K2O, Ba, Sr, Rb, Zr, Mo and LREE. The alkaline ESS is distinguished from other igneous units in the Val d’Or mining district, such as the Bourlamaque Batholith, by relatively high concentrations of Ba, Sr, Rb, Mo, Cu and Au. The ESS hosts many base (Cu, Mo) and precious (Au) metal occurrences, including: (1) porphyry style Cu-Au-Mo disseminated sulfide deposits, (2) Cu-Au deposits in volcanic rocks near the ESS contact, and (3) pyritic gold mineralization in east-west trending shear zones. The ESS is well defined by concentrical zoning on the aeromagnetic vertical gradient color map, and displays four linear trends, which are assumed to be structural lineaments, at 035°-055°, 320°-300°, eastwest, and north-south. The main mineral occurrences related to the stock display a preferred spatial association with the east-west linear magnetic trends.The ESS is preferentially located along a major structure and was emplaced late in the evolution of the Abitibi subprovince like other felsic alkaline plutons. This stock is similar to late-tectonic mineralized felsic alkaline intrusions of the Kirkland Lake and Larder Lake mining districts in Ontario, and to the Allard stock in the U.S.A. which is associated with gold and base metal mineralization. Similarities also exist with younger alkaline plutons associated with Cu-Mo-Au porphyry deposits in the Canadian Cordillera, which formed in tensional tectonic environments. The felsic alkaline magma may have formed by partial melting of deeply buried supracrustal rocks, concomitant with the development of deep fractures such as the Cadillac Fault. In such an environment, hydrothermal solutions carrying remobilized metals from deep supracrustal rocks may have deposited gold and base metals in structural traps. Plutons similar to the ESS should be good targets for mineral exploration. Résumé - Le Stock de East Sullivan (SES) est une intrusion composite alcaline d’âge tardiarchéen, situé dans le camp minier de Val d’Or. Trois principaux faciès ont été identifiés: une monzonite sensu stricto, une monzonite porphyrique et un porphyre trachytique vert. Les données chimiques montrent que ce groupe des roches monzonitiques est relativement homogène en composition avec des concentrations élevées de Na2O, K2O, Ba, Sr, Rb, Zr, Mo et ETRL, définissant une suite alcaline typique. Cet alkalin stock peut être facilement distingué des autres unités géologiques de la région de Val d’Or, tel le batholite de Bourlamaque, par une concentration élevée de Ba, Sr, Rb, Mo, Cu et d’Au. Le SES contient plusieurs importants prospects de métal précieux (Au) et de métaux de base (Cu, Mo), incluant: (1) une minéralisation disséminée de type porphyre Cu-Mo-Au, (2) une minéralisation de Cu-Au dans les roches volcaniques encaissantes hôtesses près du contact et (3) une minéralisation d’or pyritique dans une zone de cisaillement de direction est-nordest. Le SES est bien défini sur la carte aéromagnétique en couleurs du gradient vertical par des zonages concentriques, où quatre linéaments structuraux ont été reconnus: 035°-55°, 320°-300°, est-ouest, et nord-sud. Les principales zones minéralisées spatialement associées au stock sont généralement situées soit près des linéaments magnétiques est-ouest, soit le long de ceux-ci.Le SES semble s’être mis en place le long d’une structure majeure, développée tardivement dans l’évolution de la Sous-province abitibienne, comme les autres plutons alcalins felsiques. Mineral discoveries and subsequent extraction have led to the establishment of many small communities, some major towns and a few cities . In Canada, such developments have essentially occurred without benefit of long-range regional or local planning. In the past, this was not a cause for concern. Now, however, rising expectations and reorientation of social values have placed increasing responsibility on government and industry to ensure the long-term viability of communities and regions. Such responsibility means large investments by government in infrastructure and by industry in extractive and processing plants. Uncertainty in the interpretation of ore reserve estimates becomes a critical factor. The traditional methods of reporting reserves - "proven", "probable" , "possible" - may be useful in individual mine production planning, but they are inadequate for planning industrial and public infrastructure, The need for a better information base is critical, with clear and precise definitions of what is being reported, but we are a long way from achieving it. The challenge is therefore to develop a closer professional relationship between government and industry and to tie mineral development to long-range regional strategies.

"I AM very happy to have this opportunity of speaking to the Montreal Branch of the Canadian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy.I have selected as the subject of my remarks transportation in that area which is at present our only source of uranium -Northwest Canada. Considering the widespread interest in atomic energy, the end-product of uranium, it may be wondered why I have not chosen to speak of a more spectacular aspect of the development. I hope it will be evident from what I have to say that transportation plays a very dominant role in our effort to maintain a continuing supply from Eldorado's producing property at Port Radium on Great Bear lake and from its coming producer at Beaver lodge Lake in Northwest Saskatchewan. Moreover, transportation has such a bearing on the entire mineral development of the Northwest that it cannot help but be of concern to an organization of this kind. Finally, the transportation problem, of which I shall try to tell you something, is quite unique and the story of its solution or partial solution is, I believe, an interesting one.Transportation experience on this continent indicates that the cheapest method of moving freight is still by water -with •rail, highway, and air transportation following, and in that order •of economic significance. Excluding rail transportation, since the area has as yet no railway lines, this order also applies in the Northwest. I shall direct my remarks to the two kinds of transportation which serve our uranium producers -water and air."

Abstract The Britannia Mining and Smelting Company, Limited, have replaced diamond drills with percussion drills and tungsten: carbide bits for most of their blast hole drilling operations and have thereby reduced ore breaking costs. Two-inch Carset bits .are used, with one-inch hexagonal Atlas Chippewa alloy steel in 3-foot .and 6-foot lengths. Locally made couplings of Atlas SPS 245 alloy steel connect the rods. The machines used are 31½-inch automatic leyners with lugged or anvil block chucks. For drilling holes below the horizontal, the lugged machines with special adapter rods made from 114- inch solid round Atlas SPS 245 are required. These rods are lugged at one end and a water hole is drilled for six inches into the other end. Over this rod is placed a water swivel which permits the water or air to be sent directly into the steel. A decreased cost per foot, increased footage per shift, and the use of standard equipment and crews are some of the main advantages of tungsten carbide drilling over diamond drilling. Introduction Long-hole drilling with percussion drills and sectional steel was introduced in several American mines some twenty-five years ago. It did not prove very successful, however, because the rapid gauge loss in steel bits necessitated the use of very large starter bits. This in turn rapidly fatigued the straight carbon-steel then in use, made it difficult to maintain the couplings, and resulted in a slow drilling rate. The introduction of the tungsten carbide insert bit and alloy drill still has changed this picture and opened real possibilities for the application of percussion drills to blast-hole drilling. If this type of bit had been perfected ten years ago, much of the research work and experimenting done to apply diamond drills to ore breaking would have gone toward developing the application of the tungsten carbide bit to this problem.

Many leading copper and other mineral processors have rapidly adopted advanced controls in last 5-10 years. Almost 600 multivariable predictive controls have been installed in mineral processing, and almost 50% of those are in copper concentrator plants. In most cases, mineral processors rely on 3rd party support to implement these advanced technologies. One challenge facing advanced control user is the selection providers and services for these technologies. The trend has been towards the use of multivariable predictive control and use of technology provider’s services. This paper will discuss status of advanced control, and the merging trends in the mining industry. A review will be presented of how advanced control is being applied in the mining industry over the last decade, and how user challenges are being overcome. Next the emerging uses of multivariable predictive control (such as multi/inter-unit optimization), focusing on the latest trends in concentrator plants. Finally, a review will be made of emerging technology advances in the that can be advantageous to mineral processors. INTRODUCTION Review of advanced control in mineral processing Advanced controls are serving an increasing role to improve processing plant operations and profitability. As advanced control is being installed into more mining processing plants such as copper concentrators, many of these plants are concerned about the selection technologies and vendors to support the installation and maintenance of these controls. In a study by Jonas and Craw (2011), they found that most new users have not had prior experience with advanced controls. It is the author’s experience of almost 30 years in advanced controls that most mineral processers considering advanced controls can benefit from better understanding of the technologies and their support requirements.

"The Arthur W. White Mine (formerly Dickenson Mine) is a structurally controlled, hydrothermal gold deposit. A gold producer since 1948, it has, to December 31, 1990, processed 6.9 million (m) tons (T) of ore grading 0.45 ounces per ton gold (oz/T Au). As of December 31, 1991, Proven and Probable Ore Reserves were 3.2 m. T. at 0.32 oz/T Au. The mine is located just east ofPlacer Dome Inc. 's Campbell Mine, within the Cochenour-Gull.rock Lake deformation zone. It is situated on the hanging-wall side of a southeast-plunging anticline in a sequence of metamorphosed Archean volcanic, sedimentary and plutonic rocks of the Red Lake greenstone belt. Ore-bearing structures, found mainly within basaltic rocks, are brittle within greenschist-facies rocks to the northwest, but become more ductile toward the southeast, in amphibolite-facies rocks. Within and proximal to these structures, carbonate and arsenopyrite alteration decreases, whereas biotite, actinolite, pyrite and pyrrh otite all increase to the southeast.Ore and shear structures occur symmetrically about the northwest-trending, steeply southwest-dipping, flattening foliation . The three most common ore trends are on average: (A) northwest trending with a 55 degree to 85 degree dip to the southwest; (B) north-trending with a 40 degree to 50 degree dip to the west; and (C) due east-west-trending with a vertical dip. In general, the dominant direction of economic gold concentrations are explained and thus predicted by considering deformation style (brittle or ductile), rock anisotropies such as bedding and lithological contacts, and direction/magnitude of relative block movement. Direction ""A"" can be found adjacent to both right- and left-handed faults. Direction ""B "" occurs with dominantly right-handed systems and direction ""C"" is found with predominantly left-handed movement. Major faults active prior to, during, and after ore formation can have offsets in the order of 2500 feet. Movements along these faults were transpressive while their conjugate breaks were dilatant, thus creating zones for alteration and ore solution emplacement. A series of faults , each with offsets up to 30 feet were established under lower temperature brittle conditions during late- to post-ore formation. In more complex zones, formed during more ductile deformation, these faults controlled the localized geometry and, thereby, the depletion and enrichment of ore shoots, causing a high nugget effect.Although an important aspect of production planning and monitoring, grade control is also very important within a complex ore zone so that the nuggets are not missed. Detailed observation of structure at the hand-sample scale and detailed mapping at the stope scale give valuable clues to interpreting the structures on a mine-wide scale. Determining the relative movement along fault structures is very important so that using an action-reaction- type logic, potential dilatant areas can be predicted and targeted for development and diamond drilling."

The Dundee Precious Metals Tsumeb Smelter has evolved over the last decade to meet the challenges and opportunities brought about by a changing copper concentrate market, technological advances, environmental legislation as well as social and political changes. The paper discusses some of the challenges, successes and lessons learnt through the expansion and modernization of its smelter complex. It considers the details and impact of the transition from slag granulation to that of slag slow cooling as well as the improvement program that was implemented to more than double the refractory campaign life of the Ausmelt furnace from around 6–9 months to 15–18 months. In addition, given the evolving world we live in, it considers the challenges that the smelter faces today, not the least of it being how to remain relevant in an age of digital and other 4th Industrial Revolution disruptions. INTRODUCTION Dundee Precious Metals Tsumeb (DPMT) Smelter is located just outside the town of Tsumeb, in the Oshikoto region of Namibia. It is the largest town in the region with a population of approximately 45,000. The smelter was built in the early 1960s to treat concentrate from the nearby Tsumeb copper mines. Construction of the site was completed in 1962 and the smelter was officially commissioned in 1963 by Tsumeb Corporation Limited (TCL). At the time the smelter consisted of a lead section (including a refinery), a copper section and plants that produced cadmium, sodium antimonite and arsenic trioxide. Production commenced in early 1964, with 3,500 tonnes of copper and 6,000 tonnes of lead being produced per month. TCL was acquired by Gold Fields South Africa in 1988, and a few years later the lead section was shut down due to reduced lead content of the mined ore. In mid-1996, all mining and smelting operations were halted due to labour strikes. Ongopolo Mining and Processing Limited (OMPL) re-opened the mines and the smelter in 2000, only operating the copper section of the smelter. At the end of 2008, all mining operations were halted by the new owner of OMPL, Weatherly Mining International, while the smelter continued to operate. The closure of the Weatherly owned mines in Namibia, the primary feed source to the Tsumeb Smelter, meant that the smelter had to transition its business model from operating as a ‘captive smelter’ to that of a ‘toll smelter’. Its Ausmelt Top Submerged Lance (TSL) smelting technology and various ancillary plants made it especially suitable for accepting and treating complex concentrates that were available on the global market.

In recent years, the microscope has come to be recognized as a valuable aid to engineers whose business is the discovery, development, concentration or reduction of metallic ores. In many of the large treatment plants microscopical research has already an important status; and in the hands of efficient operators the microscope has indicated methods of solving ore problems resulting in the saving of thousands of dollars that otherwise might have been lost in tailings, or expended in freight rates or smelter charges. Failure to procure all the information that the microscope can supply concerning the physical and mineralogical characteristics of complex ores has in many cases led to the construction of unsuitable concentrators, just as the failure to investigate in detail the geological conditions of an ore deposit has often results in the squandering of money on shaft sinking, and mechanical installations which subsequent development of the deposit failed to justify. The great progress recently made in the selective separation of minerals by means of the various processes of flotation and leaching brings strongly to our attention, the scope of the field in which microscopical methods may be advantageously employed. The microscope enables one to observe the minute details of rock, ore, gangue, concentrate, tailing, matte, slag and metal, that are invisible to the naked eye. Furthermore, the technique of microscopal research has been so highly developed that a microscopist can not only observe, but deter-mine the compositions and measure the diameters of the mineral constituents in the ore to be treated. Magnifications of these constituents up to 3,000 diameters may be produced by the proper combination of eyepiece, objective, and projection apparatus, and the images thus viewed may be photographed through the microscope, and permanent records made of them.
