The concentrator at Kennecott Utah Copper currently has 4 lines with a configuration of one SAG mill feeding two ball mills. The slurry that reports to each ball mill will vary resulting in an unequal load of material. This configuration contains two separate sumps that receive material from a distribution box relying solely on natural slurry flow to feed each sump. The unequal split to each mill results in one mill receiving a greater amount of material. This will result in the equipment on one mill reaching limitations that may affect product quality and the operation of the equipment near maximum. The parallel mill in this condition will often have additional capacity that can be used but cannot be utilized due to the unequal split. The major consequences of this issue result in reduced throughputs and metal recovery. To resolve this condition an advanced control strategy was implemented to control the split in April of 2002 using equipment that was in place.

Telerobotics focused on mining is currently being introduced into production systems around the world. Mining companies in Canada, Sweden, South Africa and Australia have tended to lead the international charge to this form of technology for mining. While this introduction is taking place a few basic questions have yet to be answered. How many machines can a single operator run? How many types of machines can a single operator run? A new Canadian Research Chair in Robotics and Mine Automation has been established at Laurentian University. This chair will investigate these questions and many more through a series of experiments in a newly established telerobotics laboratory that connects Laurentian teleoperation workstations to model mining machines at Cambrian college?s eDome. The laboratory will support many experiments allowing researchers to physically run multiple robot scenarios differing the numbers and types of machines at one/quarter scale. Further experiments are being designed to investigate the potential for managing time delays in telerobotics. This paper describes the laboratory, experiments and some preliminary results.

The Mount Wright iron are mine and upgrading plant were brought on line in the fall of 1975. The mine is located near the Quebec - Labrador border some six hundred miles northeast of Montreal. This paper describes the crushing, grinding and concentrating facilities at Mount Wright, and some design: criteria used in equipment selection and flow sheet design. Also mentioned are some "asbuilt" modifications. A brief description of the over-all flowsheet is also included. Introduction IN SEPTEMBER 1970, the Quebec Cartier Mining Company started development of the Mount Wright iron ore mine. The estimated are reserve is in excess of 1,000,000 ,000 long tons of concentrates, with an average crude are grade of 31.5% Fe. The run-of-mine ore is crushed, ground and concentrated to a product having 66% Fe and 5% silica at an annual concentrate production r ate of 18.4 million long tons. The daily production rate of over 50,000 long tons of concentrate necessitates a daily mine output of approximately 250,000 long tons of material, of which 50% is waste.

The mineralogy of any ore body is a key factor in defining ore zones and predicting minerals/metals behaviour during processing. The determination of forms of gold, defined as the different chemical states in which gold is encountered in ore deposits, is critical. The most commonly known form is that of gold minerals and alloys, while other forms of gold have been collectively described in the literature as submicroscopic gold (i.e., less than 1 µm in diameter). Gold mining operations generally deal with very low-grade ores, in the order of a few g/t, in which gold displays complex mineralogy. These difficulties complicate the mineralogical studies and pose challenges for processing and recovering the gold. A comprehensive understanding of the chemical forms of gold is necessary to define gold mineralization and optimize gold metallurgy. SGS Canada Inc. has been using QEMSCANTM and a Tescan automated SEM that are automated mineralogical techniques that provide vast amounts of data for microscopic Au. The data in conjunction with other physical and chemical methods provide a comprehensive delineation of the ore composition and behaviour.

"This paper describes a highly versatile variable speed unit with a torque multiplication feature as a direct replacement for a fluid coupling .The unit is comprised of a modulating clutch with torque converter and lock-up options.The UCD does not start or stop the motor. "The Poplar Mountain gold occurrence in western New Brunswick is hosted in the Poplar Mountain volcanic complex (PMVC), which is located along the southern segment of the regional Woodstock fault zone. The PMVC consists of three principal units including, in ascending order, a porphyritic felsic volcanic unit, a volcaniclastic unit, and a mafic volcanic unit. U-Pb dating of zircon indicates that the age of the volcanic rocks is younger than 459 ± 3 Ma, and 40Ar/39Ar dating of mineralization-associated sericite indicates that the age of mineralization is 411 ± 3.7 Ma. Gold-mineralized zones occur in all the lithologic units but mainly in the porphyritic felsic volcanic unit. Gold zones are not controlled by individual faults but are characterized by high-density brittle fracturing, thin carbonate-quartz veining, and intensive ankerite-sericite alteration, superimposed on an earlier chlorite-calcite- quartz alteration. Gold is associated with arsenopyrite, which mostly occurs as disseminations in the host rocks, and to a lesser extent with quartz-carbonate-sericite veins and quartz-cemented breccias.Geochemical data indicate that mineralization-associated alteration is characterized by enrichment of K, Rb, Cs, Ca, Sr, Ba, As, Sb, W, C, and S. Fluid inclusion data indicate that the mineralizing fluids are composed of H2O, salts, and CO2 with variable amounts of N2 and CH4; salinities range from 2.3 to 10.6 eq. wt.% NaCl, but mainly from 2.3 to 5.6 eq. wt.% NaCl, and homogenization temperatures lie mainly between 220° and 270°C. Fluid pressures at the site of mineralization are estimated to have been 770 to 1200 bars, corresponding to a depth of 2.9 to 4.6 km at lithostatic pressure. The d18OSMOW and d13CPDB values of mineralization-related ankerite range from +14.5‰ to +16.5‰, and -6.8‰ to -8.3‰, respectively. The d18O values of the ore-forming fluids are estimated to be 6.4‰ to 8.3‰ at a temperature of 250°C. These carbon and oxygen isotope data fall in the field of magmatic fluids and in part the field of metamorphic fluids.Considering the geological setting of the region, abundant granitic intrusions, the similarity between the age of mineralization (411 ± 3.7 Ma) and the nearby Pokiok batholith (402-415 Ma), and the enrichment of granophile elements in mineralization-related alteration, the ore-forming fluids were probably derived from a granitic intrusion underneath the PMVC. These fluids were focused along structures related to the Woodstock fault. The Poplar Mountain gold occurrence might be compared to some granitic intrusion-related gold systems based on the geochemical data presented herein. "The VALMIN Code was developed and formally adopted by The Australasian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy (AusIMM) in 1995 and a revision was issued in 1998. The VALMIN Code applies to all relevant reports under the Australian Corporations Law, including submissions to the Australian Stock Exchange (ASX) and the Australian Securities and Investments Commission (ASIC).The VALMIN Code and Guidelines sets standards for the preparation and commissioning of independent assessment and/or valuation reports on mineral and petroleum assets or mineral and petroleum securities.It is mandatory for AusllvI:M's members to follow this Code in these relevant circumstances and failure to do so will result in serious sanction of the member by the Ausllvllvfs Ethics Committee. Public support for the use of this Code has been given by regulators (ASX/ASIC) and market participants ( eg major accountancy firms). It is also endorsed as a guide to general best practice in project assessment and valuation.This paper will discuss how the VALMIN Code has worked in practice over the past few years. It will also examine areas where the Code could be improved and how it could form the basis of a new Canadian Code for mineral property valuation."

COAL companies are definitely becoming conscious of the need for better organization. Mechanized mining and the intricate preparation of coal have brought with them the demand for better trained and more highly skilled mining personnel. Refinement in coal mine management is increasing the demand for young graduate engineers to start in the lower grades of the reorganization and prepare themselves to meet rapidly increasing coal mining responsibilities. The interest is wide in scope and extends from self-helps, extension work, and management study at the mines to stimulation of interest in coal mining amongst undergraduate mining students, leading to their permanent employment after graduation. Data by the United States Bureau of Mines show the total annual value of coal production (bituminous and anthracite in the U.S.) through the past 22 years as being more than 38 per cent of the combined value of all ocher mineral industry products. Natural-gas production has gained rapidly on coal since 1916; petroleum exceeded coal beginning with 1934 (see Figure 1). For this 22-year period, the Committee on Student Interest in Coal Mining, in the A.I.M.E., made a survey of the mining schools in Canada and the United States to show the approximate absorption of young graduate mining engineers by the coal industry. In 1938, 232 mining engineers were graduated as compared with 42 in 1918 (a war year) and 180 in 1923. From 1923 to 1929 the graduates declined to another low of 90, but from there on there was a rapid annual increase in the graduating output, reaching a total of 232 in 1938 and continuing upward to a maximum of over 325 graduating this present month.

"This paper is concerned with the problems inherent in the efficient and economical processing of the fine fractions of a coal from the Sulcis basin (Sardinia, Italy) whose characteristics are typical of low-rank coals occurring in the Mediterranean region. Three different techniques, based upon surface properties, are examined. Flotation can be very efficient from both a technical and economic point of view, provided care is taken in the modulation of the flotation pulp. Interesting results have been obtained with oil agglomeration and this method could be economically feasible. Finally, electrical separation has proven a viable technique, although it entails preliminary drying.Besides discussing the problems encountered in the experimental research, some significant results of general validity are also given. They demonstrate that cleaned products can be obtained with fairly interesting recoveries, thus opening the way to advanced research aimed at setting up the most suitable technique for industrial application. IntroductionAs a result of the oil crisis, which caused a major upset in world energy supplies, the last ten years have seen a revolution in the energy policies adopted.In particular, the status of coal, which seemed destined to decline in view of the availability of liquid fuel, has had to be re-examined. The need to meet energy demands under improved reliability conditions and controlled prices through a broader and more flexible diversification of sources of supply has evoked, especially in highly industrialized countries, a renewed interest in coal. The result has been a consistent increase in demand and production as well as investments in new mines and the reinforcement of the infrastructure.This turn of events has also lead to a re-evaluation of young low-rank coals, hitherto considered uneconomical and thus neglected, because of their low heat value. In fact these coals, which have a high ash content, may also be relatively highly contaminated with sulphur. The above drawbacks, which still today preclude the widespread use of these coals, are bound to create even greater problems in the future as increasingly restrictive environmental control imposes, without exception, recourse to cleaner fuels."

ONLY IN THE Province of Saskatchewan is natural sodium sulphate found in Canada in amounts large enough to make recovery economically sound. Geologists have estimated that the numerous deposits within the Province contain upwards of 200 million tons of Glauber's salt. There are twenty-one deposits in the Province which contain 500,-000 or more tons and about two dozen with lesser amounts. The first recorded production of sodium sulphate in Saskatchewan was in 1918. The company concerned, and others that attempted to develop the industry in its early stages, were unsuccessful. Their failures were caused by two main factors -lack of knowledge of efficient operating methods and the unstable market situation for the finished product. Today, the situation is changed in both respects and the product, commonly referred to as 'saltcake", is a very important chemical requirement of many industries throughout the world. Before proceeding with remarks on manufacturing methods it should be stated that, although this is a general paper on the manufacturing methods and end uses of the saltcake produced in the Province, the writer is, of course, more familiar with the plants operated by Saskatchewan Minerals than with other operations and perhaps may be excused for dealing more particularly with the plants of that Compa11y.

Au/TiO2 catalysts were prepared by deposition-precipitation using NaOH (DPN) (~3 wt % Au) and urea (DPU) (~8 wt % Au), and calcined at various temperatures between 100 and 400 °C. They were characterized by UV-Visible, XANES, EXAFS and TEM. Their activity were tested in the reaction of CO oxidation at 5°C. After preparation, the gold species are in the oxidic state III. They begin to transform into metallic gold under air at ~100 °C for DPN and ~150 °C for DPU. At 200 °C, all the gold is metallic for the two preparation methods. The particle size increases from 1.5 to 3.5 nm with the calcination temperature. The catalytic activity for CO oxidation increases with the percentage of metallic gold, and it is maximum at 200°C for both types of samples. The activities (per mole of Au) are the same for the two types of catalysts. At higher temperatures, the catalytic activity drops. The decrease of activity is mainly due to a change of particle shape with the calcination temperature rather than to the increase of the particle size. At a calcination temperature of 200°C, the particles present small facets with rounded parts, and their outer surface contains a large proportion of low coordinated sites (steps and corners) while at high temperature of calcination, they are truncated octahedra with smooth facets.

"The zinc-lead deposit of the Lake Geneva Mining Company is on lot 7, con. VI, Hess township, Sudbury district, Ontario, about 10 miles northwest of the northern rim of the Sudbury Basin. Though a relatively small deposit, it shows some rather interesting relations to cross-cutting, pre-ore, quartz diabase dykes, which merit description.The deposit was discovered in October 1924 by J. H. Collins beneath iron-stained drift and oxidized sulphides. This proved to be the northwestern extremity of the orebody, the remainder of which extends southeast below swampy ground. Exploration began in 1927. In 1928 a vertical shaft was sunk to 250 feet and a level established at 235 feet. Later the shaft was deepened to 400 feet and new levels opened at 315 and 375 feet. In 1943 an inclined winze was sunk below the vein from the 315-foot level to a vertical depth of 640 feet, and two additional levels were opened at 525 and 615 feet respectively.The geology of the area has been described by T. T. Quirke (1), F. F. Osborne (2), F. J. Alcock (3), and Ralph Tuck (4). Private reports have also been made by Carl Tolman, J. E. Gill, and K. W. Fritzsche. Tuck's paper, covering the work completed to 1930, gives a detailed account of the character of the ore and enclosing rocks.Up to May 1944, when the property was closed, all ore above the 375-foot level and a small tonnage from below this elevation had been removed. ?Ellatzite Med? is one of the biggest mining companies in Bulgaria, processing about 12,000,000 t of ore per year. Waste materials left after extraction of copper concentrate are deposited in tailings dam ?Benkovski 2?. The hydraulic structure is built according to the downstream method, through hydrocyclonization where the downstream batter and the body of the wall are formed by the separated coarse sand particles of the separated tailings. In connection with the prolonged concession of Ellatzite Med and the enlarged capacity of Benkovski 2, the tailings dam has expanded on to the surrounding terrain. To guarantee a normal hydrocyclonization and build up of a tailings wall during waste deposition from the ore mill, the technological scheme of the hydraulic transport system of Benkovski 2 has been changed.

The respirable dust real-time monitoring equipment export information is complex, and electromagnetic wave wireless transmission is affected largely under mine conditions. The respirable dust concentration information transmission method based on led light equipment is proposed. The respirable dust concentration data of the individual real-time monitoring equipment is encoded to fit the system transmission; the encoded signal is modulated onto the LED mine lamp; the light signal is transmitted by the spatial channel; the signal is received by the receiver to the photoelectric conversion to restore the respirable dust concentration data for subsequent processing. Simulation and verification experiments showed that the respirable dust concentration information transmission method based on led light equipment can achieve the LED miners? lamps visible light wireless data transmission.

The mine of the year 2020 will need to be based on a new way of mining. It will employ technology in a paradigm that assumes responsibility for sustainable development: taking account not only economic but also ecological and social issues. This will require a holistic approach to mine design and planning, considering all controlling factors and impacts (technical, economic, environmental and social). A national collaborative strategy is required to address the several options that exist for the development and application of 2020 mining technology. Key issues in implementing 2020 mining technology will also relate to human resources, in terms of employment, skills and education. A need exists to proactively prepare for 2020 through development of a comprehensive education and training strategy.

"Sorting technologies have the potential to reduce energy use in comminution by rejecting uneconomic ore before feed material enters the mill. However, a major challenge for sorting porphyry copper ores is providing a basis of discrimination between valuable and non-valuable fragments, due to their complex mineralogies and textural features. Microwave heating in combination with infra-red detection (MW-IR) has been shown to provide upgraded feedstock for certain ores at bench scale. Selective heating of copper sulphide minerals compared to the gangue leads to an increased thermal response for valuable fragments, providing the basis for sorting.Rapid scale up of MW-IR from bench scale to a 100 t/h continuous pilot plant facility has been facilitated by the design of microwave choking structures to allow continuous operation at industrially meaningful throughputs, whilst meeting health and safety and electromagnetic compliance standards, and the integration of materials handling with electromagnetic systems.Laboratory batch testing on a pilot scale microwave system has been undertaken to investigate the thermal response of copper ores under industrial conditions, at microwave energy inputs up to 1 kWh/t. These results provided the operating window and recommended test conditions for the continuous pilot plant. Sortability curves predicted in the laboratory are in good agreement with separations achieved during continuous pilot plant operations. The potential microwave sortability of a number of ores has been studied, allowing informed decisions to be made about potential ore candidates based on mineralogy. Future development of the technology will be underpinned by the creation and validation of scale up concepts for 1000 t/h operations. Understanding the value proposition for individual sites/applications will be central to unlocking the potential economic and environmental benefits of microwave sorting."

"This paper begins by describing the parameters of high-speed underground tracked drifting operations and the mucking cycle, and-discusses their variations. The railbound Haggloader 8HR is then described, as well as the Hagglund shuttle trains, outlining the advantages and disadvantages of the system. A comparison with conventional mucking operations is then given.IntroductionDrift and tunnel rounds are mucked by one of two major methods, either trackless with diesel loaders and trucks or with track loaders and cars. The aim of this paper is to compare the conventional tracked mucking cycle with the Hagglunds system alternatives.For many years, the traditional method of attacking the mucking cycle has been with a rocker shovel loader, a string of cars and a locomotive. The rocker shovel loads the first car and when full it is taken to a side drift, cherry picker or some other transfer point and is exchanged for an empty one. This empty car is then pushed back into the face and the loading continues until all cars are full . Then the whole train is taken out to a dump point where the cars are emptied. Normally the train's capacity is less than the volume of the muckpile, so the cars go back to the face. This loading cycle is repeated until all muck is removed from the heading. The last train out from the heading usually takes the loader and parks it in a side drift before continuing on to the dump where the cars are emptied.This simplified version of the traditional loading cycle excludes the ancillary work elements such as track laying and so on, but does point out that the cars must be transferred when full and that the whole train normally makes at least two round trips from the dump to the face. The prime aim in drifting is to cycle a round whithin a working shift which necessitates that no one part absorbs so much time as to prevent the completion of the cycle.Mucking, drilling and loading and the ancillary work such as rock bolting, vent and service pipe hanging typically each take one-third of the available work time. Drilling or mucking can and often do, because of various factors, take nearly half of the total cycle time. Once any segment of the operation starts to take this portion of the shift, the likelihood of missed rounds becomes increasingly greater."

Considered in two stages -actual rock substance and rock mass -the five-point classification involves the geological name of the rock, the rock strength and rock deformation, and, in the second stage, the gross homogeneity of the rock mass and the formation continuity.
