"Satisfactory hydraulic performance of a centrifugal slurry pump is not the only design criterion. If abrasive wear exists the severity of any damage can be reduced and the life of the wearing parts prolonged by selecting the correct pump to suit the conditions of service. This paper is concerned with the design and construction of centrifugal pumps for handling abrasive solids. The wear phenomena due to the slurry being pumped and the materials used to combat abrasive, wear are outlined. The hydraulic design of the impeller and casing and their relationship to wear and the hydraulic radial and axial unbalance are discussed. The prediction of abrasive wear in pumps can not be precise, as many factors are involved - and this is the object of current research."

The nickel laterite ore is composed of soft and hard minerals, and nickel distributes preferentially into the soft mineral rather than in the hard. Selective comminution of saprolitic and goethitic nickel laterites is investigated to upgrade nickel into the fine fraction using stirred milling. The optimal selective grinding conditions were determined through a kinetic study and the limit of selective grinding and nickel upgrade was analyzed. The breakage rates of minerals, grinding time, and the weight ratio of soft and hard minerals in the feed play an important role in selective grinding. A small breakage rate on hard minerals and a large breakage rate difference between the minerals are optimum for selective grinding. The soft mineral grade decreases with grinding time and the optimum grinding time is a trade-off of the soft mineral upgrade and recovery. The minerals weight ratio determines the limit of selective grinding. The effect of nickel upgrade is determined by both the conditions that influence selective comminution and the nickel grades in both the soft and hard minerals. The nickel grade in the soft mineral determines the limit of nickel upgrade.

Being a mining company, Assarel-Medet has a significant impact upon the environmental components. In order to meet the legal requirements and the requirements stipulated by the effective permits as well as to reduce the environmental imprint throughout the years, the policy of the company to implement a number of projects to improve the environmental components quality and the environmental state in the company?s region. The projects associated with atmospheric air quality management and reduction of the impact exercised by Assarel-Medet JSC by implementing various measures to eliminate the potential sources of the impact, preventive and rehabilitation initiatives as well as organizational and administrative activities are among the most important ones. A stable improvement of atmospheric air quality in the region and minimization of the company impact upon the ground air state in the region was observed in the period from 2005 to 2012 due to the applied measures. This project is a contribution to the environmental protection, in particular to atmospheric air protection, by applying integral monitoring and modeling methods to identify the negative impact by the mining companies and plan measures to reduce and restrict it as well as to improve the quality of the environment and living area of people working and living in the impact range as an element of sustainable development.

"Preliminary investigations indicate that organic lake sediments offer some potential for gold exploration within the Canadian Shield of northwestern Saskatchewan. It is also apparent that certain precautions must be taken.Gold is primarily related to the organic fraction of the lake sediments, which, although giving consistant Au contents to those sediments, may restrict the dispersion of Au within the lake itself. It may be necessary to carry out selective extractions on the lake sediments to differentiate between Au related to organic sequestration, indicative of hydromorphic and/ or chemical dispersion, and Au related to inorganics, indicative of mechanical dispersion.Lake sediments are probably only of use for very detailed exploration (i.e. every lake). One to three samples per lake should be appropriate, although a single centre-lake organic-rich sediment sample may be adequate in very small lakes. Each lake sediment sample should be analyzed at least twice and the analytical data carefully monitored and evaluated.The use of As in lake sediments as a pathfinder element for gold is applicable in the search for certain types of gold occurrences.Following detailed lake sediment sampling, basal till sampling can possibly be used to localize areas of potential gold with or without base metal mineralization."

Red lake is a body of water some thirty miles in length lying about forty miles northwest of the outlet of Lac Seul. It forms one of several large lake expansions on a river which enters the English river from the north, twenty miles below Lac Seul. Before the construction of the National Transcontinental railway a long canoe journey was necessary to reach that part of the English river, and Red lake, two days travel beyond, was one of the furthest outposts of the trading companies in that difficultly accessible triangle of country between Lake Winnipeg, James Bay and the English and Albany rivers. The Hudson's Bay Company post at Red lake is said to be one of the earliest established in the district but there are no records at the post, and as the English and Albany rivers never were used to any great extent as travel routes there is no mention of the place in the diaries of any of the early explorers. Dr. Bell passed through Red lake on his excursion to the Berens river country in 1883, and a brief note mentions that Huronian rocks were seen. To Dr. Dowling, however, belongs the credit for the first thorough description of this basin of sediments and basic volcanics. In 1893 he followed the course of Dr. Bell's trip, of ten years previous, through Red lake to the upper part of the Berens river.

THIS paper relates to an area of more than 5,000 square miles in the Northwest Territories extending north from Great Slave lake and including-the Yellowknife, Beaulieu River and Gordon lake areas. Within the last three years much interest in the area has been created by the discovery of remarkably rich gold-bearing veins and the realization that thousands of square miles of unprospected ground are underlain by rocks like those in which the veins have been found. Probably there were more prospectors in this area in 1938 than in any other part of Canada. The area lies 650 miles north of Edmonton, and 425 miles north of the terminus of the Northern Alberta railway at Waterways, Alberta. The Athabaska and Slave rivers provide an excellent water route from Waterways to Great Slave lake for large oil and wood burning boats and barges which operate from the latter part of May to October. The only portage is around a 16-mile stretch of rapids on the Slave river between Fort Fitzgerald and Fort Smith. The town of Yellowknife, on the north side of Great Slave lake, has sprung into existence during the past year and is the centre for distribution of supplies for the Yellowknife-Beaulieu region. The Con-Rycon and Negus gold mines, which came into production in September, 1938, and February, 1939, respectively, lie about two miles south of the townsite. Excellent airplane service is available from Edmonton to Yellowknife and from Yellowknife to all parts of the area. The prospector and mining operator have come to rely almost entirely on the airplane for supplies and for the transportation of personnel, camp equipment, and canoes from Yellowknife to localities selected for intensive prospecting.

Metal price is among the key variables in the open pit optimization and the economic evaluation process. The common approach to handle metal prices in open pit mine planning is to optimize the ultimate pit and the mining schedules using a fixed, flat metal price. In this respect, metal price is assumed to be known with certainty throughout the entire mine life, which in some cases can reach 80 years. Given the volatile nature of metal markets and the metal price cycles, the conventional pit optimization approach may generate sub-optimized mining plans, which results in either extra costs to mining projects or lost revenues, or both. Long-term operational decisions such as future pit expansions, beyond the currently optimized limits, cannot be handled using the pit optimization approach based on flat metal prices. There is a growing interest in the mining industry to model and manage such market uncertainty in the pit optimization as well as the project evaluations in order to maximize the value of mining operations. In this paper, the author will outline a practical approach to optimize the ultimate pit taking into account the volatility and variability of metal markets. The proposed approach uses a combination of the pit optimizer of the commercial MineSight package and a simulation-based economic modeling real options valuation approach employing the least-squares Monte Carlo algorithm. MineSight pit optimizer employs both the floating cone for initial optimization exercise and the standard Lerchs-Grossmann algorithm. In this paper, Lerchs-Grossmann option will be used to generate the pit shells. Real options valuation approach used in this study is based on generating multiple metal price scenarios. Metal price uncertainty is modeled using stochastic metal price models such as the geometric Brownian motion and the mean-reverting process. The mining operational scenarios corresponding to the simulated metal prices are then optimized using the least-square Monte Carlo approach. The objective is to maximize the discounted cash flow value of the project while incorporating the operating flexibility to revise the operating status of the open pit with time as new information becomes available. The focus of this work is on the practicality of the proposed uncertainty-based pit optimization approach and the difference it can make to the technical operational mining decisions. A case study of a hypothetical open pit poly-metallic mine is provided. The deposit contains copper, gold and silver grades. The run of mine ore is sent to the process plant that produces copper concentrate with copper as the main metal and gold and silver as the by-products. Four uncertain variables are considered here include copper, gold, silver prices and foreign exchange rate. Both copper price and exchange rate are modeled using the mean-reverting process while gold and silver prices are modeled using the geometric Brownian motion. The case study is performed using both the conventional flat price pit optimization approach and the proposed uncertainty-based one to compare results.

Cable supports offer several advantages over traditional secondary support methods by enhancing stress redistribution to pillars and gob areas, minimizing or eliminating timbers and cribs that reduce ventilation, eradicating material-handling injuries related to placement of crib supports, and providing a cost-effective alternative to secondary support. The U.S. Bureau of Mines (USBM), researching alternatives to traditional roof support methods, designed and installed high-strength cable supports to improve the stability of longwall gate road entries in a western U.S. coal mine. With the cooperation of industry, methods were developed to install and evaluate cable supports in a tailgate area using traditional resin cartridges. The cable-bolted areas successfully maintained roof support throughout the developed entries. Cable supports have replaced wood cribbing as secondary support in the bleeder entry system and have minimized or eliminated the use of cribbing in the longwall tailgate entries. This paper describes the theory, application, and advantages of cable supports and presents some mine measurements made to assess the cable performance during the retreat process of longwall mining.

These basement arches were formed by repeated vertical movements along pre-existing structures during compressional and extensional tectonism connected with events in surrounding Proterozoic and Phanerozoic orogens and ocean basins. The arches influenced patterns of sedimentation and tectonism in the intervening epicratonic basins and marginal platforms throughout the Proterozoic and Phanerozoic. Movements on the arch structures also triggered minor magmatism and controlled the location and timing of alkalic rock-carbonatite, kimberlite, and related intrusions in the Canadian Shield, the Western Canada Sedimentary Basin, and West Greenland.

"In 1958, the Ontario Department of Mines appointed a committee to study the accident situation and mining methods used in the uranium mines in the E1liot Lake district. This committee reviewed the existing knowledge on mine design, pillar support and roof spans and came to the conclusion that scientific knowledge had not yet reached the stage of producing rational design procedures which would reduce the dependence on trial-and-error methods. Since that time, the Mining Research Centre has made numerous stress measurements in two mines to define the pre-mining and pillar stresses. A comprehensive series of tests has been done in the laboratory to measure the compressive strength of the rock; a geological survey of the region has been made to evaluate tectonic stresses; and a survey was done on mining conditions with regard to stable and unstable pillar configurations. This information has been used to evaluate pillar design as effected by pillar width and height, depth below surface, extraction and pre-mining stress fields. The resultant design of pillar widths and corresponding extraction as the depth increased is in line with past and present experience in these mines. The information available on roof stability is still insufficient to design stable stope spans with the same degree of confidence; experience and trial-and-error methods are still required."

A Sievert ' technique was used. The few determinations made on 10 per cent and 20 per cent V alloys did not show any deviations from Sieverts' law up to I>N2 = 1 atmosphere. The same held true for alloys of 0.2 per cent Ti. Nitrogen absorptions in Fe-Ti alloys, containing from 0.50 to 0.77 per cent Ti at 1,600°C, follow Sieverts' law at low PN2 values, but, due to the formation of a delta titanium nitride phase, deviate from this law beyond critical values of PN2? There is evidence that this phase is Ti1.1N. "IntroductionThe Hat Creek coal field contains low-grade coal deposits which are the thickest in the world. The diamond drilling and geophysical surveys conducted by B.C. Hydro over the last six years have indicated in excess of 2 billion tonnes of sub-bituminous to lignitic coal. The coal field is in the Interior Plateau Dry Belt, about 240 km northeast of Vancouver, and contains two explored, nearsurface coal deposits amenable to surface mining (Fig. I). The No. I deposit contains approximately 740 million tonnes of coal at 17.71 MJ / kg, or 7,600 Btu/lb, at 34.82% ash and 24% moisture. The No. 2 deposit to the south contains appreciably more coal resources at somewhat lower grade, but it has not been explored so extensively because of its higher stripping ratio. Therefore most of the exploration activities to date have been directed toward the development of the No. I deposit. The No . I coal deposit has been selected as the source of fuel for a proposed thermal powerplant to be built about 5 km east of the deposit. The purpose of this paper is to summarize the data obtained from the diamond drilling and the geophysical logging in the No. I deposit between 1974 and 1979. An attempt is made to explain the depositional environment of the Hat Creek coal measures. Because the understanding of the depositional environment in.a particular basin is essentially an evaluation of all the geologic properties of the area, the available geological information in the No. I deposit has been compiled on the basis of consistent criteria. This includes data on the lithology of the coal measures, thickness and areal distribution of the elastic sediments, and on the changes in the megascopic stratigraphic profile based on geophysical correlation. The palynopetrographic relationship and detailed sedimentological aspects are not examined in this paper. Such studies should provide important information relating the causal vegetal and chemical responses of the coals to -environmental changes. Extensive deposition of surficial materials during de-glaciation left most of the area of the Upper Hat Creek Valley devoid of bedrock exposures. Structural and stratigraphic features are hidden beneath glacial deposits and/or post-Eocene volcanics. As a result, the geological interpretation of the Hat Creek coal basin has been based primarily on drilling and geophysical data. Because of this, any explanation of the depositional environment details is tentative until the deposits are stripped for development."

Estimation of gas holdup from electrical conductivity measurements has been used in lab and industrial installations. The approach is based on the application of Maxwell's model, which relates the concentration of a dispersed phase in a continuous medium to measurements of the electrical conductivity of the dispersed phase, continuous medium and the resulting mixture (dispersion). When applied to inferring the collection zone gas holdup in a three phase system and to facilitate real-time on-line measurement, the slurry is assumed to behave as the continuous medium and gas bubbles as a nonconducting dispersed phase. This article derives an equation for estimating gas holdup in a three phase system, eliminating the assumption that the slurry behaves as a continuous medium but rather as a dispersion of non-conducting solid particles in water. In this formulation only water behaves as the continuous medium in the sense of Maxwell, and gas holdup in a three phase system is then calculated from the application of the Maxwell model twice: (1) to determine solid content in a two-phase system, and (2) to determine solid plus gas holdup in a three phase system. To validate the new equation and quantify the errors incurred by assuming slurry is the continuous phase a laboratory flotation cell was instrumented to continuously measure the conductivity of two and three phase dispersions with known solids contents. As the amount of gas in a lab flotation machine is difficult to measure directly or by another indirect technique such as using pressure signals, 2.5 mm dielectric plastic spheres having a density of ca. 1.3 g/cm3 were used instead of air bubbles for validation. Experimental results demonstrated that the continuous medium assumption underestimates gas holdup and that the resulting bias error increases linearly with the solid content and decreases with the magnitude of gas holdup.

Peat/ands distribution in Canada is widely spread thoughout the country and corresponds to a wide spectrum of wetland habitats which overlay peat deposits. The development and the evolution ofpeat/ands and peat deposits are closely linked together, since the vegetal remains of the peat deposits originate from the peatland habitats, and the peatland habitats constitute a response to many factors, including the properties of the substrate, which are the peat deposits. Peat/ands are defined as waterlogged terrains where the production of plant materials usually exceeds the rate of decomposition. The underlying peat deposits consists of organic residues associated to peatland vegetation, more or less decomposed, built up and kept under anaerobic conditions. Peat/ands evolution and distribution are determined primarily by climatic factors, but also by the geomorphology and edaphic conditions. All of these create particular hydrodynamical environments which will vary according to different regional settings, and sequentially to an evolutive time frame.

"Since there was no representative from Wesfrob Mines Limited, the information on their infra-red concentrate drying operation, which had been prepared by Mr. K. Blower, was presented by Mr, Dorland. Mr. Blower, in submitting the information, emphasized that their objectives in this operation were (a) to guarantee less than 90%, of flow-moisture in their copper concentrates and thus satisfy marine shipping regulation• and (b) to minimize capital costs, The infra-red dryers have satisfied these objectives.To control final moisture in the copper concentrate, current practice is to preheat the filter cake with steam in the disc filter hood and then conveyor-0r7 the concentrate with infra-red calrod heaters. The application of steam aids the system as follows:1) Improves vacuum pump efficiency.2) Lowers viscosity of filtrate (increased temperature},3) Preheats the cake prior to radiant heating. (150°F)The hot cake discharging from the filter ranges from 10.6 to 10.9% moisture. After radiant heating the moisture level is reduced to 8.5% - 9.7% depending on production rate. Further moisture loss occurs during conveying and transferring to the stockpile for a final shipment moisture ranging from 8.1% to 9.5%. "IntroductionThe typical potash processing plant recovers and/ or upgrades from 10% to 20% of its production through the recrystallization process. The feed to the recrystallization section consists of preconcentrated slurries of fine crystal size that cannot be raised to the required product grade by flotation and fine dusts also of low grade and too fine for compaction feed. It produces high grade white potash crystals that can be marketed as a high grade product or blended into the flotation products to raise their grade. In this chapter, a typical leaching (dissolving) and recrystallization operation will be discussed.The crystallization process makes use of the three phase system chemistry of NaCl, KCl, and H,O. The normal potash process operates on a temperature range of 75°F to 95 °F. A three phase slurry feed to the dissolving circuits will be within that range. The potash (KCl) is dissolved by heating the slurry in the presence of sufficient brine to a temperature of 190°F to 200°F. As the slurry is heated, the potash (KCI) dissolves and the salt (NaCI) precipitates. The potash rich brine is then clarified and the salt and other undissolved solids removed by thickening. Clarified brine becomes the crystallizer feed.The hot brine is cooled in evaporative cooling crystallizers. In cooling, the potash precipitates as a high grade white crystal. Crystallization is done in multiple effects to permit energy recovery and control of the process. In a four effect crystallizer the cooling is done by recycling mother liquor counter currently through the first two effect condensors and using brine pond brine for the cooling of the last two.The crystallizer product is removed from the last effect as a slurry at normal process temperature and is fed either to its own centrifuging and drying circuit or blended with the flotation product for centrifuging and drying."

"IntroductionTHIS PAPER presents some analyses of diabases from a number of metallogenic provinces in Canada and the United States. It is intended as a contribution to the literature on the genesis of mineral deposits associated with diabase.As it has been in the past, opinion today on the origin of the cobaltnickel- native silver and associated pitchblende type of deposit is sharply divided. Some geologists hold that this type of deposit is in some way genetically related to intrusive diabase; others are of the opinion that the deposits are related to granite. The controversy, like others of a similar nature, probably will not be settled satisfactorily for many years to come, •but in the meantime it is recognized that, with respect to most deposits of the type referred to, altogether too few facts are known for accurate conclusions on genesis to be drawn. To contribute in a small way to factual data on this whole .problem, the writer analyzed diabase from several districts in Canada in which deposits of the aforementioned type occur. For comparative purposes, the copper, cobalt, and nickel content of diabase from Cornwall, Pennsylvania, and of norite from the Sudbury basin of Ontario, was also determined.Insofar as is known, none of the analytical work undertaken had been previously carried out."

ONE OF the major sources of the world's supply of asbestos lies in a belt of ultrabasic rocks stretching through the Eastern Townships of Quebec where chrysotile asbestos has been mined continuously since 1878. The productive portion of the belt extends from the town of Asbestos in Shipton town-ship northeastward some 60 miles to the eastern edge of Broughton town-ship. (See map). Twelve mines, currently treating an aggregate of over 60,000 tons of rock daily, produce more than one million tons of asbestos :annually. An equal number of mines are now dormant, having for the most part exhausted their reserves. It is evident from the past and present activity, in this belt that it can look forward to at least half a century or more of large scale production. This paper analyzes the physical, operational and economic site conditions which were conducive to the design of a diesel-electric power plant wherein the over-all use of the thermal energy of the fuel exceeds 80 per cent. The heat energy supplied to the diesel engines is recovered in power generation, vapour phase cooling, waste heat boilers, air to exhaust gas heat exchangers and lubricating oil coolers. Electric boilers are also integrated into the plant design to enable the ratio of electric power output to heat recovery to be varied to suit the seasonal and daily variations. The criteria relative to thermal and electric power design requirements are discussed, and the design details of some parts of the plant which conform to these criteria are illustrated. Some data in regard to the actual operation of the plant over a short period are also included. Introduction THE Cantung mine (Canada Tungsten Mining Corporation) is located some 180 miles north-east of Watson Lake, Yukon Territory. It is situated on the upper reaches of the Flat river at an elevation of about 3,700 feet.
