"The start-up of new plants, extending from the commissioning of equipment to the production ramp-up, is a critical period where the processing circuit operation must be done in a structured and well controlled way to enable the gradual, safe and rapid achievement of production targets. The magnitude of the many risks associated with this pivotal period is accentuated in the actual context of low commodity prices. However, the implementation of a method that analyzes risks associated with a start-up, their probability of occurrence and their impacts leads to the identification of a series of preventive actions that can be applied in order to reduce potential negative impacts.Soutex has been involved in numerous start-ups over the last few years and has developed a structured methodology to assess this crucial period, maximize the pre-start-up preparation, ensure a smoother and safer ramp-up period and minimize the time needed before reaching commercial production.This paper describes a method to identify preventive actions to apply in order to reduce risks related to a plant start-up. Then, the various steps of the method are demonstrated using the industrial case study of the Canadian Malartic gold plant situated in Abitibi, Québec. The specific preventive actions, during start-up, the organisational measures and the ramp-up plan are detailed as they were effectively achieved. Finally, the post start-up actions are presented as well as some key results illustrating the achievement of their prior defined objectives.IntroductionPlanning a new plant or new circuit start-up in a mine installation involves various risks, both at the economical and safety levels. Unprepared staff and equipment can lead to safety issues that could threaten plant staff as well as the environment. Moreover, a poorly prepared start-up could often lead to equipment break-down, production stoppages and delays, leading to important economic impacts, delaying commercial production and therefore affecting directly the profitability of mining projects.It is common in the industry to have structured commissioning procedures for major equipment taken separately. Technical personnel from the equipment manufacturing company would usually come on site in order to perform the pre-operation verification, dry runs and the first hours of operations. This kind of assistance is usually focussed on one piece of equipment and neglects the interactions between the various equipment of the production chain. The commissioning phase is usually maintenance oriented and the information given by the manufacturing representative seldomly flows through the operation staff (in the case of this paper, the denomination “staff” refers to both managing and operating employees). The global process is usually not taken into consideration by the technical personnel sent on-site by the manufacturer during the commissioning phase. Many papers can be found describing the commissioning of new equipment focussing on the technology (Côté and Adante (2009), Wells et al (2007)) but without dealing with its integration process in the complete production chain."

"This paper presents results from the proposed cyanide detoxification circuit for Seabridge Gold’s KSM project. The proposed flowsheet uses a two-stage CCD (counter-current washing/decantation) circuit to transfer the flotation products CIL(carbon-in-leach) barren solution to a SART process (Sulphidization, Acidification, Recycling of precipitate, and Thickening of precipitate) to recover copper and free cyanide from the copper cyanide complex. The SART barren solution is then treated by an AVR process (Acidification, Volatilization of HCN gas, and Reneutralization) to concentrate the cyanide that was liberated in SART for recycling to leach. The washed CIL barren pulp (the CCD underflow) is treated with the SO2 /Air process to oxidize residual cyanide.The goal of this complex flowsheet is to recover and recycle as much cyanide as possible and produce a final effluent containing less than 0.5 mg/L copper and CNWAD at the lowest cost. The SO2/air process is capable of achieving low residual CNWAD (<1 mg/L) in the final product, but the persistence of aqueous copper above the target level has been detected in the treated solution in some instances. The expected high concentrations of copper and cyanide in the KSM CIL barren ( >200 mg/L each species) and the difficulties this might create for the SO2 /air process was a key factor in the decision to consider including the washing, SART and AVR steps in the project flowsheet.The target concentrations of CNWAD and Cu were readily achieved after aging the SO2 /air treated pulp, as would occur in a tailing or polishing pond. This suggests no additional treatment will be required to sustain low levels of these species in the final plant effluent."

Highland Valley Copper had to make some significant changes in the way it was working in order to counter the effects of ever-increasing costs and decreasing metal prices. A mine/mill optimization plan started in 1997 introduced new technologies and management approaches that resulted in a dramatic drop in cash breakeven costs. The changes involved employee training, added authority and responsibility for staff, better communications, and a consistent approach to setting and achieving property-wide goals. The net effect was to change the culture of the organization from one that was fragmented and focussed on local objectives to one that is cohesive and has common goals. These changes have allowed the mine to remain in business during a protracted period of low metal prices, and have positioned the mine favourably to benefit even more from any future increase in prices.

"Campbell mines has been in operation since 1948. Part of the process consists of roasting of a flotation concentrate which contains arsenopyrite.At present operation level the milling rate averages about 850 t.p.d. and about 48 t.p.d. of concentrate is roasted. The gas emissions at present contain between 3 and 3.5 t.p.d. of arsenic trioxide, about2 - 2.5 t.p.d. of particulate matter and between 19 - 25 t.p.d. of sulphur dioxide. The particulate is extremely fine calcine dust and it assays about 4 oz. Of gold per ton.Until 1974 the gas was discharged untreated through a 125' stack.UntreatedThe decision was made in 1972 to erect a gas treatment plant, construction ran through 1973 and operation began in 1974. The cost of the installation was about 1.3 million dollars.On investigation the process technology, it was apparent that the plant operated by giant Yellowknife for the same purpose was the model we should study. I would like to acknowledge the fine cooperation we had from giant, the plant that emerged is very similar to theirs and incorporates some improvements suggested by them and based on their operating experience.The plant is designed to remove arsenic and solid dust and it has no provisions to remove sulphur dioxide.We depend upon the 125' stack to assure adequate dilution. Because of the nearby airport the stack cannot exceed 125'. A stack burner is provided that can ""y used to heat the stack gas and carry it higher into the atmosphere when there is an inversion condition.The removal of arsenic from hot gas is fairly simple. The sublimation point is about 425°f, a few degrees above this point the arsenic is a gas and a few degrees below it condenses into a solid form. The arsenic could have been removed by simply dropping the temperature below the condensation point and collecting all the solids in a baghouse. This would have removed the possibility of recovering the gold in the calcine dust and would have produced an impure and more bulky arsenic material to be placed in safe storage. The decision was made to collect the solid dust in a hot electrostatic precipitator operating above the sublimation point and subsequently lower the temperature below the condensation point and collect the arsenic in a baghouse."

"Hydrophobic polystyrene nanoparticle suspensions were evaluated as potential flotation collectors for pentlandite. Experiments involving both clean model mineral suspensions and complex ultramafic nickel ores confirmed that conventional water-soluble molecular flotation collectors such as xanthate could be partially or completely replaced by hydrophobic nanoparticle flotation collectors. The ability of nanoparticles to induce flotation was demonstrated by floating hydrophilic, negatively charged glass beads with cationic polystyrene nanoparticle collectors. Electrostatic attraction promoted the spontaneous deposition of the nanoparticles on the glass surfaces raising the effective contact angle sufficiently high to promote the adhesion of beads to air bubbles. As little as 10% coverage of the bead surfaces with our most effective nanoparticles could promote high flotation efficiencies, whereas conventional small molecular flotation collector requires ~ 20% or higher coverage for a good recovery. Surface functionalized nanoparticles enhanced the ability for nanoparticle collectors to selectively deposit onto surfaces of the desired mineral particles in the presence of gangue. For example, poly (styrene-co-vinylimidazole) nanoparticles were designed to selectively deposit onto nickel mineral (pentlandite) in the presence of Mg/Si slime. Flotation tests of ultramafic nickel ores at Vale with these nanoparticle collectors have shown improvements in both pentlandite recovery and selectivity. On-going work includes attempts to identify specific applications where nanoparticle flotation collectors might be cost effective.INTRODUCTION Most mineral processing operations include multiple stages of froth flotation to concentrate and isolate the desired product. Before flotation, chemical collectors are routinely added to ground ore slurries, selectively binding to mineral-rich particles, increasing their hydrophobicity thus promoting selective flotation. (Fuerstenau, Jameson, & Yoon, 2007) Conventional collectors are surfactants with a short hydrocarbon tail and a head group, such as xanthate. A typical conventional collector is potassium amyl xanthate (PAX), which is a small molecule with an extended molecular length of about 1 nm. Critical characteristics of a good collector include the ability to selectively adsorb onto desired mineral surfaces and to lower the water/mineral surface energy. Despite the extensive role of flotation in mineral processing, some ores are difficult to process by flotation. For example, ultramafic nickel sulfide ore containing both valuable pentlandite and large quantities of unwanted Mg/Si slime [primarily serpentine, (MgFe)3Si2O5(OH)4] responds poorly to flotation. (Mani, Xu, Quinn, & Stratton-Crawley, 1997) Fibrous hydrophilic Mg/Si slime usually masks the surface of pentlandite (known as “slime coating”) due to electrostatic interaction (Edwards, Kipkie, & Agar, 1980) and dramatically depresses pentlandite flotation. Consequently, new approaches are required for processing these difficult ores."

"The technologies used in the mineral processing of ores are being increasingly applied to the identification and remediation of metal contaminated industrial, military and landfill sites. The objective of mineral processing treatment of contaminated site material is to restore the value of the land and to concentrate the contaminants into a very small volume of separated material which, depending upon its nature, can be further processed, marketed, or sent to a landfill. A systematic characterisation of the site material is first undertaken. Bench and pilot testing follows to evaluate criteria for metal separation. The testing may examine one or more physical or physico-chemical reprocessing methods, singly or in combination, for the remediation of the test samples. These mineral processing tests determine the % metal removal fiom the soil and the contaminants concentrated from the medium. The usefulness of mineral processing testing for site remediation flowsheet design and execution is illustrated by the case studies presented. This paper will present the test results of three case studies: an industrial site decontamination, the cleanup of a small arms firing range, and the reclamation of property within a landfill.INTRODUCTIONEnvironmental legislation and our society’s quest for a cleaner environment has led to the application of mineral processing expertise and technology for industrial site decontamination, military site cleanup and landfill reclamation. Although the required level of decontamination varies between jurisdictions, a site becomes a candidate for decontamination once the contaminant concentrations are found to exceed the Canadian Council of Ministers of the Environment (CCME) Interim Remediation Criteria for soil (decommissioning guidelines) or applicable provincial guidelines. Goldcorp’s Eleonore mine is situated in Ell Lake area in the northeastern part of the Opinaca reservoir in the James Bay region of Quebec. The design of the 7000 t/d process plant includes crushing, grinding, bulk sulphide flotation, separate concentrate and tails leaching and detoxification circuits and residue handling. Detoxified flotation tails are thickened and filtered. A portion of the filtered tails are blended with the thickened detoxified sulphide concentration for paste backfill. The remaining filtered tails are trucked to the waste management facility. This presentation will describe the challenges faced with the commissioning and subsequent ramp-up of the flotation tails filter plant and the successes achieved by the multi-discipline team at Eleonore.

NVI Mining’s Myra Falls operation is a forty-year-old underground mining operation feeding a 4,000 metric tonnes per day concentrator. The current mill, built in 1985, was designed to process a massive sulphide ore-body. This orebody, known as the HW, contains about 50% pyrite. Minerals of value are chalcopyrite and sphalerite, with precious metals occurring in all mineral types. By 1997, mining of a new ore-body, known as Battle-Gap, commenced. Mineralogically complex, the new orebody contains about 15% pyrite copper minerals, including primary chalcopyrite and secondary bornite, chalcocite and tennantite, combined with increased galena and sphalerite. Flotation performance generally decreased with increasing amounts of Battle-Gap ore types, with both copper concentrate quality (increased lead and zinc content) and copper recoveries being affected. Following significant metallurgical test-work, a new, fully sequential copper-lead-zinc flotation flow sheet and reagent scheme was developed. This sequential flow sheet was progressively installed and commissioned during 2006. Copper concentrate lead and zinc smelter penalty contents have been reduced by some 40%, while increasing copper recovery by 10%.

The Thompson-Moak Lake nickel belt lies along the root of a Precambrian mountain range of the island-arc or alpine type. This range coin-. cides with the boundary between the Superior and Churchill blocks of the Canadian Precambrian shield. The nickeliferous peridotites and nickel ores occur along a negative gravity strip, which also coincides with strong thrust faulting and the axis of greatest deformation of the mountain range. Similar structures and highly nickeliferous peridotites occur in present-day island arcs. Much of the belt is covered by Paleozoic rocks, but a length of 270 miles may be explored by present-day methods. Nickel deposits have been located along 60 miles of the belt. The length of the favorable structure and the size of the known deposits suggest that this will be one of the world's major nickel regions. The regional gravity anomalies, which consist of a branching negative strip bordered by two positive strips, are best explained by major warps of a crust consisting of a granitic and basaltic layer. "The toxicity reduction of emissions from two diesel engines by the emulsification of water into fuel oil was investigated to determine the applicability of such systems to underground mining machinery. . The engines studied were: 1) the Deut; F6L7J4, four-stroke, air-cooled, 6-cylinder, V-configuration, indirect-injection (IDl) engine, and 2) the Detroit Deisel Allison Division 8V7JN, two-stroke, water-cooled, 8-cylinder, V-configuration, direct-injection (Dl) engine.The application of emulsified fuel treatment to the two-stroke engine did not prove to be practicable. In the case of the Deutz engine, however, substantial benefit resulted. For a modest J5 per cent water content in the fuel and an injection timing of24° BTDC, approximate reductions of40 per cent in the concentrations of both particulate matter and nitric oxide (NO) were produced. These reductions were accompanied by insignificant changes in other toxic constituents. The net result was an approximate 30 per cent reduction in the over-all exhaust toxicity for typical LHD operation as assessed by the Health Effects Index criterion. This toxicity reduction represents a significant advance from the points of view of an improved underground environment and/or reduced ventilation costs."

"Copper Mountain’s concentrator was commissioned in May 2011. The circuit consists of a 34’ x 20’ EGL SAG mill, a Raptor 900 pebble crusher and two 24’ x 39’6” ball mills. Each mill is equipped with a 2 x 8500 HP dual pinion drive system. The plant was designed to process 1585 mtph of SAG feed. From startup, the mill struggled to meet the required production rates. Over time, a major initiative that involved blasting and fragmentation, optimization of the SAG mill in terms of discharge grates, ball size and slurry density, and operation of up to three mobile pre-crushing plants resulted in significant increases in throughput. In parallel, a number of modeling tools, including JK SimMet, were run based on plant benchmarking exercises. Samples collected at the mine site during ramp up confirmed the very competent nature of the ore with drop weight - A*b values of less than 24 being recorded on a variety of plant feeds and lithologies. After due consideration including demonstration of proof of concept, a new pre-crushing circuit incorporating an XL2000 cone crusher and associated screening equipment was designed, constructed and commissioned at the site in August 2014. This paper reviews the history of the original circuit design, the various optimization steps taken and impacts, together with the final pre-crushing circuit and net results.IntroductionThe Copper Mountain Mine is located approximately 20 km south of Princeton, British Columbia, Canada (refer to Figure 1). The region has a long history of copper mining dating back to 1923. The Copper Mountain camp occurs in the 'eastern volcanic belt' of the Nicola Group (Monger, 1989). It is an alkali copper-gold deposit in which the volcanic strata are intruded by early Jurassic dykes, sills, irregular plugs and zoned plutons (Woodsworth et al., 1992). The stratified rocks are relatively fresh with slight metamorphism in the local contact regions."

"The High Pressure Grinding Rolls (HPGR) is a relatively new comminution technology that has been shown to be more energy efficient compared to semi-autogeneous (SAG) mills. Full and fair consideration cannot be given to HPGR-based comminution circuits in early stage projects, because presently pilot scale testing is required for assessing and sizing; pilot scale testing requires bulk samples weighing more than one tonne. A CAMIRO research program was conducted at the University of British Columbia to develop bench scale tests that would reduce the quantity of sample required to assess HPGR.Three test procedures were developed.1. The Direct Calibration Methodology calibrates piston press test results to pilot scale test results such that piston press tests can then be used to determine the energy–size reduction relationship for a range of ore types.2. The Database Calibrated Methodology, which is similar to the Direct Calibration Methodology except that it calibrates piston press tests against a database of pilot scale and piston press tests.3. The Semi-Mechanistic Methodology was developed to use piston press test results as an input for an HPGR based energy-size reduction performance model.Through utilization of these methodologies, the energy–size reduction performance of an HPGR can be predicted with minimal sample requirement. In addition, piston press testing is far more cost effective, faster, and accessible than pilot-scale HPGR testing.IntroductionOne could argue that in the future, decisions regarding selection of comminution circuits will be made primarily on the basis of energy consumption. "With ever decreasing feed grades, finer mineralogy and increased demand for product, it became obvious that a major step in equipment performance was required to reduce operating costs and increase production. Offsite testwork indicated that a Centrifugal separator was capable of recovering fine tantalum and that the newly developed C Series Falcon concentrator would be capable of replacing many pieces of aging equipment and provide improved performance. Further investigation led to the rental and the purchase of a Falcon C20 concentrator followed by a C10 to maximize circuit performance.Falcon Concentrators Inc’ s practice of working with the customer mirrors Tantalum Mining Corporation of Canada’s (Tanco) philosophy of continuous product development. This synergy honed valve design for continuous operation in a highly abrasive ore environment.Tanco has recently purchased two more Falcon concentrators for the recovery of additional tantalum from its spodumene circuit. "Spodumene mineral is a source of lithium for lithium ion batteries. Thus, the production of a spodumene concentrate with an approximate grade of 6% Li2O is targeted. Traditionally, spodumene is concentrated by froth flotation using fatty acid as the collector. Amine collector can also be used to float mica ahead of spodumene as required or feldspar from the spodumene tailings. Slimes have a negative effect on spodumene flotation and they are commonly separated by scrubbing and de-sliming prior to spodumene flotation. The main losses in spodumene flotation typically occur in cyclone overflow, scrubbing slimes, spodumene flotation tailings and mica concentrate. In recent years, dense media separation (DMS) is the main concentrating process in Australian spodumene operations. In these operations, DMS is efficient at generating coarse grain concentrates and rejecting large portions of silicate gangue, thereby directly reducing the milling cost. The ore should be crushed to 3/8” or coarser while further crushing is possibly necessary on the middling particles to scalp further spodumene. The DMS feed should be classified to remove fines (typically -0.5 mm particles). The final middlings and undersize fractions could then be processed by flotation. The main requirement in DMS operations is to have good spodumene liberation at relatively large grain size. This paper reviews the most significant DMS and flotation parameters in spodumene beneficiation. The treatments of different minerals in the spodumene ore are also addressed.INTRODUCTION A number of laboratory/pilot plant programs have been recently conducted at the SGS Lakefield site, sponsored by different clients. The main objective has been to develop a process flowsheet to generate a spodumene concentrate containing 6.0% or higher Li2O (~75% spodumene) suitable for producing lithium carbonate by a hydrometallurgical process. Depending on spodumene liberation size, dense media separation (DMS) can be an attractive option to produce a final high grade concentrate and to reduce the mass to be treated in the flotation circuit. In such a case, crushing would typically be performed in stages, with DMS separation to recover a spodumene concentrate and reject gangue minerals following each stage. DMS middlings and -0.5 mm fines can be processed by flotation to further recover spodumene. In the flotation process, coarse stage grinding minimizes the grinding cost and formation of slimes. In the majority of cases, a grind size (K80) of approximately 200 microns is sufficient for flotation. After primary grinding, mica, if present in an appreciable amount, should be floated to minimize interference with spodumene flotation. Desliming after scrubbing and high density conditioning are the key process operations prior to spodumene flotation. Spodumene can then be floated from silicate gangue minerals with a fatty acid or a mixture of fatty acid and petroleum sulfonate at slightly alkaline pH. Subsequently, feldspars can then be floated from the spodumene tailings."

"In 2007, Noront Resources Inc. discovered the high grade nickel copper PGE deposit in northwestern Ontario in a region now known as the Ring of Fire. Since the initial discovery, Noront has advanced the Eagle¹s Nest Project and in September 2012 released a feasibility study for the development of the Eagle¹s Nest Project. This paper summarizes the results of this recent study and outlines additional work planned in the next stages of project development. INTRODUCTIONThe following paper summarizes the findings of the recently completed feasibility study on Noront Resources Ltd.’s Eagle’s Nest Project. The feasibility study was compiled into a NI 43-101 report by Micon International. This paper is intended to summarize the major technical findings and for complete information, interested parties can find the entire NI 43-101 report at www.norontresources.com or on SEDAR.LOCATIONThe McFaulds Lake project area, which includes the Eagle’s Nest deposit, is located at approximately UTM 5844000 N and 547000 E, and between approximately 52º42’ and 52º50’ N latitude and 86º06’ and 86º24’ W longitude, approximately 250 km west of the community of Attawapiskat on James Bay and 575 km northwest of Timmins. The closest all-season accessible community to the McFaulds Lake project area is Nakina, 300 km to the south, where there is a paved airstrip, in addition to all weather road and railroad access (see Figure 1).The First Nations communities of Webequie and Ogoki/Marten Falls are located 90 km west and 120 km south southeast of McFaulds Lake, respectively. Both communities are served by regularly scheduled air service, primarily from Thunder Bay; both Thunder Bay and Timmins serve as support centres for the James Bay communities and the exploration projects in the area."

"High-grade concentrates are achieved in flotation columns primarily due to the use of thick froth layers and wash water, both of which facilitate the drainage of hydrophilic minerals from the froth. However, conventional columns employ tall, non-agitated recovery sections for bubble-particle attachment that require high headroom and special gas spargers as well as imposing particle size limitations. These disadvantages can be all alleviated by carrying out the recovery part of the process in a mechanical or pneumatic cell which generate froth more conveniently and efficiently.This paper describes the combining of mechanical and column flotation in a single unit and discusses the influence of various parameters on the performance of the system.INTRODUCTIONIn a flotation process, some of the minerals lifted up to the froth phase may drain back to the pulp due to various reasons such as weak attachment of particles to air bubbles, bursting of air bubbles, agitation of froth, etc. Weakly floating and entrained hydrophilic minerals drain at a faster rate than the strongly floating minerals, and effective exploitation of such differential drainage can lead to cleaner concentrates.For a given mineral, if the rate of flotation from pulp to froth is k1 (min·1) and the rate of drainage from froth to pulp is k2 (min""1), then the net (overall) flotation rate of the mineral, k (min-1 ), will be [Lynch et al., 1981 ]:"

"The Key Lake uranium mine is the largest single uranium producer in the world. It is owned 2/3 by Cameco Corporation and 1/3 by Uranerz Exploration and Mining. Cameco is the operator. Current production is fourteen million pounds per year of uranium oxide (U308).The mine's location is 570 kilometres north of Saskatoon on the southern edge of the Athabasca Basin approximately at latitude 57° 11 'north and longitude 105° 34' west. Access to the mine is by an all-weather road and a private airstrip.The mill was commissioned in 1983. A molybdenum plant was constructed in 1989 in response to increasing molybdenum content in the yellowcake or final product. Early test work had showed that the first ore body to be mined, the Gaertner deposit, would present few problems with regards to molybdenum in the product. However, the test work also showed that the higher molybdenum content of the Deilmann ore, the second Key Lake orebody to be mined, would result in increased molybdenum concentrations. Without the molybdenum plant, penalties would become excessive and some product might not accepted by the refineries.This paper will describe the current Key Lake mill process with emphasis on the molybdenum solvent extraction process. It will cover the chemistry of the process, process development in the mid 1980's, and current operating practices.The Key Lake milling process consists of five individual plants, crushing and grinding, leaching -counter current decantation (CCD), solvent extraction, yellowcake/crystallization and bulk neutralization (Figure 1. "Difficulties with the sizing and operation of centrifugal froth pumps are common and the underlying fluid dynamics are complex. Design and selection often relies on previous experience, offering unreliable guidance for novel applications or unexpected problems. The current paper describes a program of extensive laboratory testing on froth handling centrifugal pumps, covering a range of flows, heads, speeds, viscosity, air content and froth stability. Variations in impeller vane design and the effectiveness of an airlock venting apparatus were also examined. The program resulted in a better understanding of centrifugal froth pump dynamics and insight for the troubleshooting of field applications.INTRODUCTION The Challenge of Pumping Froth In pumping mineral processing froth, the handling of large quantities of air within the fluid is often unavoidable. Efforts to reduce the amount of air present at the pump suction, while always recommended for improving pump performance, may have limitations. Some strategies may also carry an economic penalty, such as unwanted process dilution (e.g. due to water spray or injection), or increased capital cost of equipment due to oversized pumps, sumps and/or piping. Froth pumping losses fall into several categories, as described below and represented graphically in Figure 1. • Density effects: Entrained air reduces the pressure created by the centrifugal pump in direct proportion to the reduction in bulk density. This is not a true “loss”, since the head produced by the pump (in meters of froth), may remain unaffected. However, the reduction in pressure often leads to a corresponding increase in pump speed required to drive the system, which itself leads to increased NPSH required by the pump (NPSHR). Furthermore, by adding a gas phase, the overall volumetric flowrate is increased, assuming a fixed quantity of de-aerated liquid being handled. This leads to increased suction velocity which further reduces the NPSH margin by simultaneously increasing pump NPSHR and decreasing system NPSH available at the pump suction (NPSHA). • Viscosity effects: Increased viscosity introduces an additional factor in some froth pumping applications, such as oil sands bitumen froth. Losses result from increased shear stress within the fluid flow, which increase with flowrate. Viscosity also facilitates the formation of airlock by reducing turbulence and allowing individual bubbles to coalesce more easily within the flow stream. Finally, it increases pump NPSHR by increasing local pressure drop in the vicinity of the vane inlet edges. • Airlock effects: Also known as air binding, it occurs when air or gas coalesces within the pump suction or impeller passages and begins to collect there, held by buoyancy forces within the rotating flow field. In essence, the liquid “floats upwards” towards the pump suction against the outward directed centrifugal forces. The airlock acts as a blockage, with corresponding reductions in flow, head and efficiency. NPSHR also increases, due to increased velocity and distorted streamlines in the flow circumventing the blockage."

"In January 1983, Gibraltar Mines Ltd. started an exploratory program on Column Flotation with hopes of improving performance of the Molybdenum Cleaning circuit. The encouraging results led to a column test trial in the Bulk Copper Cleaner circuit where the test unit has per¬formed well. A program was undertaken to understand the mechanics of column operation. A year and a half later, Gibraltar is considering the replacement of existing Bulk Copper and Moly Cleaning flotation cells with a fully computer con¬trolled Column Flotation circuit.BRIEF SUMMARY OF TESTWORKInitial testwork was done with a home made 20 inch diameter x 31 foot high column, equipped with a doppler flow-meter at the tail line and automatic level conrol. This loop maintained constant level in the column by throttling the tail valve. This column was placed in a variety of locations around the Moly circuit as shown on Figure 1 a, b. Test re¬sults indicated that the column could achieve much higher grades than the conventional cells, but recovery wise, the performance was low. Spillages from overloaded pump boxes were a common frustration during this time.Column control strategy was reviewed; and, in light of information received from McGill University, changed to conform with the methods that had been employed by D. Wheeler, of the Column Co. of Canada4 and Gaspe Copper Mines3.The column was tested replacing a portion of the bank, figure lc. The results obtained were more or less equal to the circuit. However, as we had Nitrogen gas connected to the column and not the regular cells, the column was kept in service. With the use of Nitrogen in the column, the usual copper depressant, Sodium Cyanide could be replaced with Sodium Hydrosulphide, hence lower operating cost.As time went on, a 10 inch diameter column was added in series to re-treat the concentrate of the 20 inch diameter column with hopes that the copper content would decrease from 0.6% down to 0.3% in order to save on subsequent leach¬ing costs. So far, results indicate there has been some im-provement, hut we are not achieving 0.3% copper. (See figure 1d)."
