Construction and mining sites are often subject to unexpected flooding and extensive delays may occur in locating and installing emergency pumps. This particularly applies to sites located in remote areas. A simple and effective pump, called an air-lift pump, can be built from the equipment available at the working site. The basic req- uirements are a compressed air supply, air hose and conventional water pipes. The air-lift pump is comparatively in- efficient but approximately 35 per cent of the available compressed air power at the site can be applied to pumping. Suprisingly high liquid discharge rates may be obtained in suitable applications. The theoretical and practical consider- ations of the air-lift pump are evaluated and a suggested procedure for the emergency design and construction is outlined. INTRODUCTION. In the technical sense, as well as in the professional sense, the word 'model' can have many meanings. More than 23 000 references were uncovered by a simple literature search on keywords ' MO D EL#. and. (META LLURG#. or. M I NERAL#)' . For the purpose of this paper, 'models' will be considered to be mathematical formulations which attempt to represent or approximate a process. The model may be purely, or a combination of: ò fundamental models, based on the laws of physics, chemistry and thermodynamics; ò semi-empirical or phenomenological models, where an intuitive concept of the process is formulated and found by testwork to fit observed behaviour; and ò empirical or 'black-box' models (including neural networks), where a mathematically convenient form is proposed and fitted. Even under this more restricted definition, which eliminates heuristic and statistical 'models', it is clear that the efforts expended in devising and using models have exploded during the years since the first APCOM Conference in 1961, benefiting from the dramatic decrease in the cost of computer power. This paper reviews the areas of usage of computer modelling in the metallurgical and mineral processing industries, from plant design, through off-line support, to on-line modelling and automatic control. In each area, frontiers of new development of the technology are mentioned. It is noted that, while modelling is now standard practice in design, it is not yet the norm in operating and controlling plants. The reasons for this partial acceptance are, it is argued, less related to the limitations of the technology than to the human and organisational factors involved in transferring technology to implementation.

Indosinian (T) orogeny amalgamated the Mongolia-Xingan fold zone, the North China continent, the Yangtzi platform and the SE China fold zone into a unified continent. The early to middle Yanshanian (J-K,) orogeny created a Cordilleran type active continental margin in East Asia, reactivated the consolidated East China continent, and generated a large amount of granitoids, calc-alkaline volcanics and W, Sn, Mo, Cu, Au, and U ore deposits. The late Yanshanian (K2) orogeny began a transition to the western Pacific type continental margin. A tensional environment led to the development of peralkaline magmatism and the formation of continental basins with red beds. The Himalayan (Tr-Q) orogeny was characterised by a backarc spreading and rifting regime. The dominant magmatism was continental basaltic.

Technological changes in Portland cement manufacturing during past years have reflected changes in the economics and availability of various types of fuel such as coal, fuel oil and natural gas. The industry consumes a sig- nificant quantity of both thermal and electric- al energy. The nature of the process and its chemical constraints does however permit the use of comparatively low grade fuels such as high ash coal and high sulphur oil. In striving for increased daily kiln outputs and conservation of energy, there is a worldwide trend towards the use of dry process plants. Wet process kilns of about 2 500 tonnes per day assume massive component sizes which present difficulties in manufacture, and transport to plant sites. Large capacity dry process units in excess of 8 000 tonnes per day are now in operation using precalcination techniques in which part of the fuel is introduced in the static preheater section ahead of the kiln while the balance is added to the kiln in a conventional manner. This technique has virtually doubled the potential output of any given single kiln.

In-situ leaching of gold deposits has not become an option largely as a result the lack of suitability of cyanide as a lixiviant due to sluggish kinetics and high dependence on the availability of oxygen. A second problem area is the excessive cost of drilling the required number of injection and production wells needed to service a wellfield capable of maintaining any significant throughput or providing and acceptable level of gold production. Well spacing in in-situ leaching operations is limited by solution life, dissolution rate, and the need for solution control. With cyanide the life of an active solution capable of dissolving significant gold is severely limited by the availability of oxygen which cannot be readily replaced while the solution remains underground. The extremely slow gold dissolution rate also necessitates excessive contact periods in order to dissolve coarse gold.

The authors have succeeded in providing additional rigour and clarity to the formulation and execution of the dynamic programming algorithm for optimum open pit limit determination. The inclusion of the blocks on the J + 1 column in the search for Pmax, and constraining this search with blocks assigned a value of negative infinity, ensures an optimal solution within the defmed blocks. The effect of the negative infmity blocks is to preclude mining along the diagonal blocks from the first row that they occur in. Figure 1 graphically illustrates the effects of this on the calculation of P. A practical application for constraining mining with negative infmity blocks is the case where the pit outline is defined by lease boundaries and not by the value of blocks to be removed. Any legal, social or physical constraint could be accounted for in the same way.The danger in applying this technique is that the negative infinity blocks will override any other more profitable solutions that may exist. This is in fact what has happened in the example that the authors use. If a further column is added to the left hand side (column -1) and the calculation is carried out again, a more optimal x-section can be found. (If the negative infinity values are removed the same result is obtained.) This gives a pit value of 112 as against the 108 of the authors' optimal pit. This calculation is shown in Figure 2. Lerchs-Grossman optimization is reliable only if there are sufficient columns available to allow "mining" to optimum depth of the ore body and still allow the pit to break out at the surface within the confines of the columns.This author's approach is to create enough columns each side of the lateral limits of the ore to allow the pit to intersect the surface while still within the confines of the block model. Implementing the methods discussed by the authors helps to reduce the number of columns required to achieve this.

There exist several legislative provisions in N.S.W. which work together to control surface subsidence due to extraction of coal by underground methods. The important ones are the Coal Mining Act, Coal Mines Regulation Act, Mine Subsidence Compensation Act and Dams Safety Act. In addition, there are guidelines laid down by the Chief Inspector of Coal Mines for mining under and in the vicinity of tidal waters and the ocean. There are also conditions of coal mining leases and conditions of approvals given to undertake various methods of mining which stipulate further controls. The legislative provisions and relative controls are designed to minimise surface damage, ensure safety , of major public utilities, control- surface land use and compensate damage caused by subsidence as a result of coal mining operations. They aim at balanced and responsible development of our valuable coal resources consistent with adequate safeguards to surface improvements and natural features. The paper discusses in detail these legislative provisions and the mechanics of their operation with a view to emphasising the fact that underground coal mining operations are undertaken responsibly and in a planned and rational manner for the overall benefit of the community. Further, the paper aims to demonstrate the need for legislative measures and conditioning of mining operations to keep abreast of developments in the knowledge and skills of mining and subsidence engineers and continuing improvements in mining technologies. Likewise there is a need on the part of engineers and those associated with introduction of new technologies to appreciate the requirements and existence of legislative and other measures having a direct or indirect association with surface subsidence as a result of coal mining operation.

Mesothermal gold deposits of southern Alaska and Westland, New Zealand have both formed at the seaward edge of major collisional zones in the Pacific basin. In Alaska, production of large fluid volumes correlates in time with the addition of heat into the lower parts of the accreted terranes in the late stages of collisional orogeny. This heat was critical for driving both the metamorphic reactions that released the large volumes of fluid that carried the gold, and the contemporaneous widespread anatexis and magmatism. In Alaska's Chugach terrane, this heat was produced by subduction of a spreading ridge beneath the North America continental margin in the Eocene. The resulting products were the S-type granites and gold-bearing veins. The similar widespread S-type plutonism and gold veining in Westland's Buller terrane suggest that a similar tectonic event could have triggered ore formation along the southeastern edge of Gondwanaland. Based on the Alaskan model, a Devonian or Early Carboniferous age is favoured for high volume metamorphogenic fluid generation and gold vein formation in Westland.

The State Electricity Commission of Victoria (SECV) has been con- tinuously involved in the extraction of brown coal from open cut mines in Victoria's Latrobe Valley for over 60 years, but have not completed a major mine. Detailed consideration for rehabilitation at this stage has only been able to be given to overburden disposal areas. Increasing interest in rehabilitation in the 1980's led the SECV to review its existing policies and practices and to embark in 1985 on a public consultation process to establish an agreed and accepted policy. This was extended in 1986 to the consultation process for the rehabilitation planning for the Mor- well Open Cut External Overburden Dump. This paper covers the con- sultative process developed and the lessons learned by the participants.

The proposed guidelines on vibration limits that have been circulated by the Australian Environmental Council, demonstrate the need for an extensive data collection and evaluation program to avoid the enacting of abritrary and costly legislation. The operational or practical influence of blast design and overall economic implications of legislation which further reduces permissible levels of ground vibration are discussed. In a typical blasting operation, blast sizes could become smaller and blasting correspondingly more frequent to meet pro- duction demands. Blasthole diameters and charge lengths could be reduced, increasing drilling costs and associated labour costs. Blast size however, is frequently controlled by factors associated with machinery, grade control, pit control, stope size, production contract levels and other factors which cannot be readily changed for operating mines. Blasthole diameters are frequently deter- mined by existing drilling equipment, length of holes (depth of ore or stope size), geological structure and other factors which are not easily changeable. Typical large scale open stoping and strip mining opera- tions are analysed as case studies. The effects of extreme leg- islative limits and the corresponding operational changes with respect to variations in production costs are discussed.

X-ray diffraction (XRD) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) techniques have been adopted in this study, to investigate the structure of carbonaceous materials such as graphite, brown coal char as well as coke, in order to explain their dissolution performance during ironmaking. These materials have been selected for study since they are commonly used recarburizers in the metallurgical industry. It was concluded that the crystal structure in a carbonaceous material can have a significant influence on its dissolution into iron melts. The material with the highest degree of ordering, which is graphite, showed the best dissolution performance. In contrast, the material with the lowest degree of ordering, which is brown coal char, showed the worst dissolution performance.

Three main confined aquifers occur in interseam sediments beneath the planned excavation for the Loy Yang Brown Coal Open Cut. Sub-artesian groundwater pressures occur in all aquifers necessitating dewatering to prevent excessive seepage and depressurisation to prevent heaving of the open cut floor and batter instability. Reduction of water pressures in coal joints is also required to maintain coal face stability. This paper describes the depressurization and dewatering strategies, investigation for and installation of pump bores and groundwater observation bores. Approximately 5000m of drilling is carried out annually for dewatering at Loy Yang and both cable tool and rotary flush drilling methods are utilized. The cabletool method is used to obtain accurate samples for laboratory analysis, whereas rotary flush methods are used for speed and for installation of the larger diameter pumping bores. A method of re-establishing pump bores after partial excavation during mine development has been successfully developed with large cost savings. Trials are also being conducted with pre-collaring of deep bores with rotary methods then sampling the aquifer strata with a cable tool rig.

The Eastern Distributor Tunnels - the first major road tunnel project in Australia - are the preferred solution to traffic congestion problems, when compared with alternatives, in this inner urban environment. This is because of the reduced impact on residential housing, the improvement of the existing environment, less restrictions on future developments, and a reduction in noise and pollution. Developments leading to a tunnelled solution, traffic needs and reasons for route location are discussed. Criteria for design of tunnel alignments and geometry are described, including the restraints imposed by surface connections on profiles and grades resulting in low rock cover at tunnel portals. The main geotechnical restraints are a major weathered dyke at the shallow large span underground fork and the weathered Ashfield Shale capping the Hawkesbury Sandstone at a portal. Rock cuttability and excavation methods are discussed. Roadheader machines are the most suitable for the varying shallow arched cross sections required and the tunnel lengths involved but the use of blasting in special situations cannot be ruled out. Initial support for the major tunnel lengths will be provided by rock reinforcement in conjunction with shotcrete. Steel ribs are proposed in areas of low cover and weak ground. Final support will comprise an insitu concrete lining. Construction concepts and special tunnelling methods required at the shallow underground forks and tunnels are described.

Mine to mill optimisation is not a recently developed concept. It is one which is finally gaining greater acceptance in the Australian mining industry, possibly as a consequence of the downturn in markets and certainly made possible by the development of tools and techniques to measure and predict performance of mining equipment and milling plants. Fragment size after blasting has a major bearing on the performance of all aspects of mining and a major influence on the economics of the mine and mill. The process to optimise fragmentation consists of identifying the key factors, measuring their sensitivity through a modelling and trialing program and conducting economic evaluations on the changes on both the mine and mill. Management of the Ernest Henry copper-gold mine in Northern Queensland, Australia, has espoused the mine-to-mill concept and is actively pursuing excellence in blasting to drive down the total cost of mining. Ernest Henry has extremely hard, wet and heavily jointed geological conditions, and had high powder factors and a large percentage of oversize material reporting to the crusher or ROM stockpile. A blasting improvement program was undertaken between Ernest Henry Mining, Thiess Contractors and Orica Explosives to optimise the ore size distribution, particularly the oversize component, as a step to reducing production costs. Measures of success included bringing the rock breaker back from double shifts to part-time operation and increasing direct dumping into the crusher from 70 per cent to 92 per cent. Tools and technologies to predict and measure the performance of individual blasts are needed before it is possible to optimise fragmentation or the downstream processes. These include such specialised Orica Explosives tools as SABREX, POWERSIEVE, and POWERLINE and commercially available drill monitors. As important are the more common still and video camera, borehole loggers, measuring tapes, surveying equipment such as face profilers, and a high speed camera if possible. There are many tools which can be applied however it is rarely necessary or possible to use all of them due to time constraints and a point of diminishing returns. The critical point is knowing what the true parameters of the blast were compared to design -only then can the predictive tools be effectively utilised. Stage one of the program has seen gradual improvement as the understanding grew and practices have been implemented resulting in reduced bridging in the crusher, geological mapping with respective blast designs and the oversize component under control. This paper is about a process approach which links tools and technology to understand the fragmentation drivers and then to optimising the size distribution. You wouldnÆt start excavating before testing core samples, so why would you approve a project plan before all factors have been identified, reviewed and addressed? Even a champion sports team made up of the best players canÆt produce optimal results without a well understood and agreed game plan. Could an F1 racing team produce their outstanding performance without rigorous evaluation and testing of the factors for successful performance? Why would we expect a capital works project team to be able to get it right without an understanding and an involvement in setting and implementing the overall game plan and without an understanding of all stakeholder requirements? For International PowerÆs Hazelwood (IPRH) mine in Victoria, the challenge was development and delivery of a 40 year mine plan, ultimately involving relocation of existing mine operations into an adjacent new coal field, land acquisitions and major environmental and other approvals to allow diversion of three streams, a highway, an Over Dimension route and other infrastructure in a political and environmentally sensitive atmosphere. The lessons from International Power HazelwoodÆs (IPRH) experience are: that the clear set of project principles and guiding values ensured delivery of a robust plan; a robust plan can withstand significant change; and value management (VM) played an important role in providing assurance, to all, that the plan was sound at both the strategic and micro levels. This Hazelwood mine project included five major VM workshops. The first was a critical review process in addition to design and cost reviews. This VM workshop was used to analyse, at a high level, the preferred coal mining sequence and design concepts, together with the interaction between design elements, risks and costs. In addition to this, the workshop provided an agreed common pathway for all downstream decisions. A second VM study was conducted to ensure that the proposed plan and design for relocation of the conveying systems from the existing mine into the new field were planned for optimum achievement from a whole of life cost, time, operational and maintenance perspective, plus the logistics of continuing operations while relocating assets. A third study followed to review the Conveyor Transfer Alliance and review functional design. A fourth VM study workshop was formed at the start of Phase 2 Alliance to ensure that the best value for money was being achieved through the current design, schedule and project arrangements and that all interfaces between parties had been reviewed and responsibilities were clear and understood. Other studies are outlined later in this paper. This paper details the evaluation criteria and processes used in the project evaluation that led to the WestField Mine Development.

This paper provides a brief historical review of the invention of the spiral separator and its adoption into Australian metallurgical practice. The purpose of the review is to demonstrate that spiral development to date appears to have been a largely empirical process, and that the cur- rent resurgence of interest in the spiral, especially in the coal industry, warrants an increased fundamental research effort. Current research work concentrating on empirical modelling is outlined, while some preliminary experimental results of a more fundamental nature are presented and some research of other disciplines interested in particle transport introduced in order to stimulate further work and discussion.

The mining and minerals industry has had and will undoubtedly continue to have a considerable impact on the development of this State. For the first 60 years of its history the colony of Western Australia made slow progress; its population in 1889 being only 43,000. However, as a-result of discovering gold at Coolgardie and Kalgoorlie the Eastern Goldfields alone had a population of 25,000 by 1897. The income generated by the gold mining industry allowed the Premier of the day, Sir John Forrest, and his Government to support the proposal put forward by the State's Engineer in Chief, C.Y. O'Connor, to construct a pipeline to carry water from the Darling Ranges to Kalgoorlie ; a distance of 600 kilometres. The demand for people knowledgeable in the science and art of mineral exploitation also prompted the State Government to establish a School of Mines in the Goldfields in 1902, where it has remained ever since. The gold mines of this region have been a major source of employment for over 70 years and there is no doubt of the fact that their continued prosperity minimised the effect of the world recession on Western Australia in the 1930's.

A new model of flotation is presented which allows predictive calculations of total solids flows and metal grades and recoveries to be made for industrial flowsheets. A method of making these calculations is presented and illustrated with examples. The problem of determining sufficient flotability characteristics from a sample of circuit feed to predict the behaviour of that specific ground ore in the flotation circuit (ie performing flotometric analysis) is addressed, and some suggestions are made for its solution. A feature of the flotation model is its practical technological orientation, allowing determination of a small number of ore flotability parameters by fitting observed batch kinetic flotation data. The unit model explicitly includes the cell aeration as total bubble area per unit pulp volume, and pulp residence time. Although more complex unit models are feasible, it is thought that this model is sufficiently realistic to illustrate the points made. The modelling approach is illustrated by application to flotation data from a Kambalda ickel circuit. The model is parameterised and ore flotability parameters are back-calculated from batch kinetic data. These parameters are then used to fit the observed behaviour of the industrial circuit by numerically adjusting the unit aerations. Finally, it is shown how the model may be used to predict the effect of circuit and ore changes on the circuit's technological indices.

Driefontein Gold Mine together with Kloof Gold Mine and Beatrix Gold Mine forms part of Gold Fields South Africa. Driefontein Gold Mine is situated near the town of Carletonville, 50 km south of Johannesburg, in the Gauteng Province. The 4 Shaft East complex comprises of the 4 Main Shaft and the 4 Subvertical Shaft. The main shaft is 9150 m in diameter and was sunk in 1984 to a depth of 2000.5 m. The 4 Subvertical Shaft is 7320 m in diameter and was sunk during 1985 to a depth of 3006 m. Full production was, however, only reached during 1988. Intensive mining is currently being done between levels 28 to 42. In 2002 a decision was made to start mining the shaft pillar, situated between 32 and 33 level in the subvertical shaft. Intensive studies showed that with selective mining scheduling the total mineÆs life could be lengthened by nine years if accessed timeously. The higher grades present in the shaft pillar can be mixed with lower grades from the same reef band presently mined 1500 to 2000 m away from the subshaft pillar area. The shaft pillar comprises 50 per cent of the remaining ore resources available. However, no provisions were made in the initial phases of the shaft development to extract the shaft pillar. Grades between 4300 cmgt to 2500 cmgt relating to 23 and 14 g/t are present in the shaft pillar and an estimated 50 tonnes of gold can be produced from this pillar in the period from 2007 to 2015. The pillar extraction is the key to DriefonteinÆs long-term gold profile. Every geological feature possible is represented in this to-be-mined pillar area. The pillar around the shaft is a complex structure featuring hard and soft lava, sedimentary structures/plane parting that moves against each other, quartzite capping, etc. Replacement of services and secondary support systems were designed, modelled and put in place. The original steelwork was not designed to cope with the various stresses and movements, which are expected once the extraction process is started. Existing shaft steelwork was used as far as practically possible. The principal behind the design was that the steelwork would be totally disconnected from the shaft lining over its total length of 132 m in the area of the reef intersection. This will allow the steelwork to move independently from the geological structures surrounding it, allowing a certain degree of distortion of the shaft lining, moderate twist and tilt to take place without interfering with hoisting operations.
