The Glenrock Group forms the uppermost part of the Early Devonian to Early Carboniferous Burdekin Basin sequence in the Townsville hinterland, north Queensland. As redefined, three formations make up the Glenrock Group. The Percy Creek Volcanics (base), the dominantly epiclastic Mount Douglas Formation, and the Horse Pocket Volcanics (top). The Ellenvale beds unconformably overlie the Mount Douglas Formation and Percy Creek Volcanics and have been excluded from the Glenrock Group as defined by Wyatt and Jell (1980). Three facies associations are recognised in the Mount Douglas Formation: Alluvial Plain facies, Alluvial Fan facies and Lacustrine facies.Deposition of the Glenrock Group, began with the eruption of massive basalt and basaltic andesite lavas, probably in a volcanic arc setting. With time, the volcanism evolved to become more dacitic to rhyolitic in composition. Waning of the volcanic activity appeared to coincide with uplift of source areas (probably to the west). Deposition on an alluvial plain during this waning volcanic cycle, gave way to alluvial fans at the margins of the uplifted terrain. As the uplift ceased and the system became more mature, the alluvial fans gave way to widespread lakes. Rhyolitic ignimbrite and airfall tuff, interbedded with the alluvial plain, alluvial fan and lacustrine facies, indicate that some volcanism continued, probably vented in the uplifted terrain to the west.

The world is getting flatter through internet, mobile phone technology, relatively low cost travel, massive outsourcing of manufacturing to China and the transfer of company backroom operations to India. In the iron and steel industry, however, things will remain relatively the same with slow gradual improvements in technology; only the geographic location of plants may change over time. Or will it? The blast furnace smelting process has remained largely unchanged since 1828 when James Neilson came up with the idea of preheated air being delivered to the tuyeres. Likewise, oxygen steelmaking that takes molten iron from such blast furnaces has remained conceptually unchanged since Sir Henry Bessemer invented an air-based system in 1856. These two processes are the core of integrated steel mills that we know today. Typically such mills consist of coke ovens, sinter plant, blast furnace, oxygen steelmaking, continuous caster, rolling mills and metal coating lines. In the intervening 150 years the only real disruptive technology to the integrated steel mill has been the minimill. Based on the use of the electric arc furnace (EAF), in conjunction with a continuous caster and rolling mill, the term minimill is used because steel products are produced at down to one-tenth the scale required for economic operation of an integrated mill, with the EAF producing molten steel using largely scrap steel as its feed, as against transforming coal to coke (coke ovens), iron ore, coke and limestone into molten iron (blast furnace) and molten iron to steel (oxygen steelmaking). There are, however, a number of technologies in development that may cause a paradigm shift in the way steel products are produced and perhaps push the evolution of the minimill as a disruptive technology. Two examples are direct iron smelting, where iron is produced in a matter of seconds by injection of ironmaking feed materials into a molten bath, and thin strip casting, where molten steel is cast into 2 mm strip or less, in similar time. Both have Australian connections. A leading iron smelting technology is the HIsmelt« process, which has its first commercial application at Kwinana, Western Australia, where a joint venture of international parties, consisting of Rio Tinto and the Nucor, Mitsubishi and Shougang corporations, are in the stage of ramping up commercial production. The leading strip casting technology is the Castrip« process that arose from development work done by then BHP Steel, with IHI of Japan, at Port Kembla, New South Wales in the 1990s. Nucor followed this work up, building the first commercial plant for the technology at its Crawfordsville site in Indiana in 2001 and has recently announced an intention to build a second plant in the USA. While both technologies are only into the early stages of commercialisation they are likely to change the face of iron and steelmaking as we know it over the next 20 years. This paper elaborates on the technology of the two processes, why they could change the face of the iron and steel industry forever, what might drive the rapid change and what the changes may look like.

Rampura-Agucha Zinc-Lead deposit is unique as it is reported for the first time in the gneissic terrain with a rich oregrade quality of early to middle Proterozoic of Bhilwara supracrustal belt in the Precambrian of Northwest India. These sulphide ores are mostly confined to the graphite bearing Quartzofelspathic gneisses with intermittent bands of Calc-Silicate granofels and amphibolite. The ore and country rock mineralogy and their textural features are indicative of highly metamorphosed deposit and further the presence of marmatite and monoclinic phyrrhotite revealed high temperature environment of deposition.The present paper deals with some of the ideas about the ore genesis and petrographics of the associated rocks for Rampura-Agucha Zinc-Lead deposits of Bhilwara District (Rajasthan).

The Black Star Open Cut is located immediately adjacent to the township of Mt Isa and is situated in the middle of extensive pre-existing infrastructure including two concentrators, two smelters, a wet fill plant and two shafts. At any one time there are in excess of 500 people working on the surface within an industry-accepted 600 m exclusion zone from Black Star blasts. Apart from the surface operations there are also the underground operations including the lead mine (closed in December 2005) and the Enterprise and X-41 mines that must clear for all Black Star blasts. The application of industry standard blasting exclusion zones (600 m) was risk assessed as imposing operationally prohibitive constraints which could cause significant business interruption due to the logistical challenges required to ensure that all personnel from surface plants were evacuated for each blast and potential for lost production whilst these personnel were not operating the plant. In was therefore an imperative for the blast exclusion zone to be reduced. This was achieved by the: use of a QA/QC team to ensure that relevant drill and blast implementation is within an acceptable tolerance (KPIs) from design; use of high-quality stemming material called HMR, which is a by- product of the concentrating process and is generally sized at -14 mm with very little fines; implementation of appropriate training and support to Black StarÆs own blast crews, reinforcing the need to achieve the designed amount of stemming in every hole; and provision of appropriate support from Black StarÆs management for additional resources to ensure that every blast achieves design within the KPIs but especially in high-risk areas. The blast exclusion zone was successfully reduced after monitoring the flyrock results from more than 176 blasts. Black Star Open Cut now maintains a minimum blast exclusion of 200 m in critical areas; however, general blasting currently uses a 250 m exclusion as this provides additional risk management whilst still minimising the logistics associated with clearing and securing the slightly increased area.

IndiaÆs iron ore mining industry is growing rapidly in order to augment the capacity to meet the unprecedented demand for the iron ore. Traditionally, much of Indian iron ore production came from exploitation of high-grade haematite ores, with the exception of Kudremukh which beneficiates lean grade Banded Magnetite Quartz ore. Now with the changed scenario of demand and supply, keeping long term sustainability in mind, it is imperative to develop suitable processing technology for exploitation of banded haematite quartz (BHQ) ore available abundantly and not utilised so far. In this direction detailed characterisation and beneficiation studies were conducted with BHQ iron ore from the Bellary-Hospet region of India, assaying 36.5 per cent Fe. The mineralogical studies with the image analyser system revealed the presence of maghemite and haematite as iron-bearing minerals. The gangue mineral associations were siliceous, ferro-magnesian and carbonate minerals. Higher degrees of liberation were observed in the size range of 75 - 212 microns. Liberation grind tests were performed by grinding the ore to different top sizes in a closed circuit laboratory ball mill with the ground samples subjected to Davis tube tests. The yield, grade and recovery were used as parameters to plan a two-stage wet drum magnetic separation based on grinding the primary magnetic concentrate. After subjecting the final magnetic concentrate to flotation to remove residual silica a concentrate assaying more than 68 per cent was obtained. The non-magnetic product from the primary magnetic separation was deslimed, ground, blended with secondary magnetic tails and was subjected to a two pass wet high intensity magnetic separation (WHIMS). The WHIMS concentrate was further subjected to two-stage flotation to remove residual silica to obtain concentrates assaying 64 - 66 per cent Fe. The final combined concentrate from wet drum magnet and WHIMS after flotation could yield a blast furnace (BF) grade pellet feed concentrate assaying more than 65 per cent Fe with a yield about 39 per cent and iron recovery about 70 per cent. A direct reduction (DR) grade pellet feed concentrate assaying 67 per cent Fe with a yield of about 28 - 31 per cent and iron recovery about 53 - 57 per cent could also be produced. Based on the test work, a process flow sheet was developed to beneficiate the BHQ ore for production of BF/DR grade pellet feed concentrate. In this paper methodology adopted for selection of individual process, various diagnostic tests performed to rule out other beneficiation processes and the final process flow sheet development is presented and discussed in detail.

The Beaconsfield Gold Mine within the township of Beaconsfield in northern Tasmania has been established in recent years to exploit a known resource in the Tasmania Reef which was mined to a depth of 450 m below surface between 1877 and 1914 yielding 850 000 ounces of gold. Activity at Beaconsfield over the past 30 years has involved drilling to assess the resource and rehabilitation of the top 100 m of the Hart Shaft that had collapsed since the original closure. More recently the mine has been dewatered to the 375 m Level and work is well advanced establishing infrastructure aimed at recommencing production during 1998 - 99. This paper reviews geotechnical studies undertaken to-date and provides a brief overview of some practical methods of analysing ground conditions. It pursues simple observation and analysis as a tool for assessing mine design and ground support options without recourse to extensive monitoring and measurement and avoids the use of elaborate models before the basics are understood.

High resolution airborne magnetic and radiometric data have been shown to optimize exploration for epithermal gold deposits in the vicinity of Charters Towers, northeastern Queensland. The radiometric data allow extrapolation of poorly outcropping geology to provide a cost-effective mapping technique, even at exploration scales (eg. 1:25,000). At a regional scale (eg. 1:100,000) the magnetic data reflect the regional tectonics and divide the area into domains for the application of different genetic models. For example: 1. the Ravenswood Batholith is characterized by multiple intrusions dating from Ordovician to Permian age. The polarity of the magnetic anomalies implies an age for the intrusions and indicates a deposit style for exploration. 2. extensional and wrench tectonics along the northern margin of the Drummond Basin are interpreted from the magnetic data and indicate favourable blocks for detailed exploration. Genetic exploration models may be tested in favourable environments by the recognition of geophysical signatures. These signatures reflect structural, lithological and alteration patterns arising from controls on ore deposits and can be applied at regional or detailed scales.

The treatment plant of the Gold Mines of Kalgoorlie Ltd. is situated on the Oroya South Lease, on the Eastern edge of the Kalgoorlie Golden Mile.It was designed and erected by Messrs. Alex. Stewart and Company, in consultation with Mr. Harry Hey, and was completed in November, 1937.Its original capacity was 9,000 tons of all-sulphide ore per calendar month, l?ut the plant was extended in October, 1939, to treat 13,000 to 14,000 tons per month of mixed sulphide and oxidised ore.Recovery of the gold is accomplished by cyanide treatment, followed by flotation of the cyanided residue, roasting and cyanidation of flotation concentrate and precipitation of the gold from the cyanide solutions. In the cyanide section, the crushed ore is finely ground in cyanide ,solution and the pulp is agitated to dissolve further gold. It is then thickened and filtered. In the flotation section, this filter residue is conditioned with S02 gas and a pyrite-gold concentrate recovered by flotation.This concentrate is roasted and then cyanided.KALGOORLIE ORE DEPOSIT.The Kalgoorlie ore deposit occurs within a wide area of Pre-Cambrian rocks, ,and consists essentially of two series of basic igneous rocks known as the older greenstone series (calc schist) and the younger greenstone series (quartzdolerite- greenstone) . At Port Latta in Tasmania, Savage River Mines operates vertical shaft furnaces for the firing of pelletised magnetite concentrates. At times the temperature profile of the furnace has changed markedly, necessitating the- burning of greater quantities of fuel to maintain good pellet quality. A study of the oxidati=of magnetite concentrates was under- taken because this exothermic process supplies much of the heat required to indurate the pellets. Using the thermal analyses methods, different magnetite concentrates from Australian and overseas were heated in air under identical conditions, to compare rates of oxygen uptake and of heat release. In addition, a compari- son was made of the oxidation behaviour of different particle size fractions of a selected concentrate. Particle size analyses, x-ray diffraction and dilatometer tests were used to aid inter pretation of the thermal analysis traces. The investigation emphasized the importance of particle size and ferrous iron content in determining' oxidation rates from the commencement of heating.

At Kalgoorlie Consolidated Gold MineÆs (KCGMÆs) Fimiston Operations, located on the periphery of Kalgoorlie Boulder in Western Australia, roughly 7.5 million tonnes of rock are broken each month for the extraction of gold. With the close proximity of neighbours to the mining operations in the Chaffers Cut Back, special blasting techniques and tools were employed by KCGM to manage the blast induced vibrations and noise in this area. The i-konTM initiation system coupled with OricaÆs complementary modelling and analysis tools offered the complete blast management package. With these tools KCGM management and Orica Mining Services commenced an investigation into the benefits of electronic initiation. Prior to the commencement of electronic blasting, initial modelling was conducted to examine the vibration time waveforms and their frequency content, as these were expected to have an impact on vibration interaction with structures such as large buildings and urban dwellings. This work looked at results measured for a previous conventionally (pyrotechnic) initiated blast in the area and compared it to the results obtained when the blast was modelled with electronic initiation and faster timings. The predicted peak particle velocity (PPV) and structural vibration factor (SVF) were calculated. From the results it was concluded that the investigation into using i-konTM electronic initiation system and SHOTPlus«-i blast design software had some real potential to improve blast vibration management on the cut back. The use of the electronic initiation system and complementary software allows intricate timing designs to be accurately placed into blasts. The system has a number of working modes that allow either the precise design timings to be logged automatically into each detonator or to be manually logged where a variation from the design exists. Where such variations from the design occur, the electronic system permits the actual timings used to be uploaded back into the design file. This allows both design and real actual timings to be stored for future analysis or reference.

Hematite ore has been mined in the Southern Middleback Ranges as blast furnace feed for the steelworks at Whyalla, by what was then BHP, since 1991. With the floating of BHP Integrated Steel as OneSteel in 2001 and the subsequent loss of key mining personnel, breakdowns in grade control methods and procedures occurred. These were compounded by changes in orebody characteristics and grade distribution leading to poor reserve recovery and poor grade control, both which resulted in loss of control of ore specification and severe deviation from the mining schedule. As a result, a total review of grade control, mining method and scheduling procedures was undertaken as well as a review of contractor quality assurance. It was found that sampling methods were poor and unrepresentative, grade control blocking processes were outdated and did not reflect the geology of the deposit, the ore mining method was outdated and did not respect the geometry of the orebody, reconciliation methods were being completed globally and were not reflective of individual areas of the deposit, and that deviations from the mine plan were occurring due to access to high-grade areas outside the schedule in order to bring stockpiles back on grade. Based on these findings, updated sample splitter systems were fitted to drill hole rigs, double bench sampling was implemented (2 + 4 m samples as opposed to 1 + 8 m sample) and a three-dimensional cellular grade control system introduced to better reflect the geology and orientation of the deposit. At the same time ore mining was changed from front end loaders mining on 8 m benches to excavator mining on three lifts on 8 m benches; this aided selectivity and respected the geometry of the orebodies aiding cleaner recovery. Reconciliation is now completed on a blast-by-blast basis, which allows for quick and easy identification of poorly performing areas of the resource model that can then be incorporated back into resource model updates. Regular daily and weekly meetings are also held with emphasis on the mining schedule to ensure no deviation from the schedule in the long term. These improvements have resulted in a lift in reserve recovery both globally and locally associated at the same time with improvement in grade.

æMining + Health in DevelopmentÆ is a project funded by the International Mining for Development Centre (IM4DC, 2012) to develop a centralised database of corporate sustainability initiatives for managing and improving occupational and public health, based on information extracted from social and environmental reports of major mining, oil and gas (MOG) companies. This register of materials has the potential to increase stakeholder awareness of the unique health risks impacting the minerals industry, employees, their families and surrounding communities, as well as to inform stakeholders on global industry approaches to health management.Data and preliminary outcomes from analysis of different MOG corporate sustainability reports on public health and disease management are presented for six African countries (Democratic Republic of Congo, Ghana, Mozambique, Sudan, Tanzania and Zimbabwe) and six Asia-Pacific countries (Indonesia, Mongolia, Pakistan, Papua New Guinea, Philippines and Vietnam).With the minerals industry facing ongoing rapid growth worldwide, including continuous expansion into developing regions, the æMining+Health in DevelopmentÆ project will inform industry, civil society and regulators of current health management practices and programming among the different sectors of the minerals, oil and gas industries and across various regional operations. Regional geological mapping and facies analysis of the Late Devonian to Early Carboniferous Keelbottom Group of the Burdekin Basin have resulted in a depositional model representing six siliciclastic-carbonate facies. The six facies represent alluvial fan, braidplain delta, siliciclastic shoreline, siliciclastic shallow marine, restricted siliciclastic/carbonate shelf, and carbonate shoal depositional environments. These facies are identified in the Star beds which are equated with and included in the Keelbottom Group in this paper. Facies are repeated throughout the Group, as a result of two transgressive-regressive cycles.The first transgression recognised in the Keelbottom Group began in the mid-Famennian, and followed deposition of the Late Devonian Dotswood Group. It was marked by the deposition of Siliciclastic Shoreline facies in the basal Myrtlevale Formation, which was succeeded by Siliciclastic Shallow Marine facies at the peak of the transgression. The return of Siliciclastic Shoreline facies in the upper part of the Myrtlevale Formation marked the onset of the first regression, which resulted in the progradation of Braidplain Delta facies from the northwest of the basin. During the peak of this regression, deposition in the western part of the basin was dominated by Alluvial Fan facies.

Blasting in Norwegian mines is often carried out by contractors who tend to look for the cheapest solution, without concern about fragment quality. The requirementsfor a contractor are usually only related to the maximum size of boulders and the quantity per month. Even when the owners of the mine are responsible for blasting, very little effort is made to optimise the blasting process. This paper presents test methods which were used and results from small-scale and full-scale blasting tests. In the small-scale tests, cubes 500 x 500 x 500 mm of four different rock types were blasted in a chamber, using two types of dynamite explosive. The velocity of detonation (VOD) for the dynamite explosives was 3000 m/s and 6000 m/s respectively. Three cubes of each rock type were blasted with each type of explosive, and a total of six cubes of each rock type was used. The entire muckpile (approximately 350 kg) was- sieved and weighed after each blast and fragments between 8-16 mm were tested for impact values and flakiness. The results of these tests clearly showed improvement in fragmentation the closer the acoustic impedance ratio of the explosive (VOD x density) over the rock (Cp density) was equal to one. The results also showed that the quality of the fragments (in terms of impact values) tends to be better when the cubes are blasted with the high velocity dynamite.

A small modification to current industrial practice should lead to better nickel powders for use in alloying, electroplating, and powder metallurgy. Nickel powder compacts sold for alloying are not always suitable for electroplating applications, since some presently used commercial powders will expand on sintering. Further, such nickel powders are unsuitable for use in the production of powder metal parts, because of expansion during heating of the near-net-shape preforms. Research in these laboratories has enabled the elimination of expansion, and led to techniques for the production of compacts suitable, in particular, for commercial use in both alloying and electroplating. The techniques include: powder pretreatment, cold pressing and sintering, hot pressing, and hot pressing and sintering. In this way compacts are readily prepared with densities of at least 93 per cent of solid nickel, and these, when used as anodes in Watts general purpose and bright baths, give both cathode current and plating efficiencies of 90-98 per cent.

Chrysotile asbestos is a valuable resource. Used as a reinforcement in asbestos cement, products are obtained which are cheap, are not attacked by vermin, do not rot or support growth of fungi and are unaffected by water or humid conditions. Such products are of great value in the developing countries where inexpensive and durable building materials and pressure pipe are very important to development, housing and water supplies. Concern over the adverse effects of inhaling asbestos has led to the introduction of increasingly stringent controls world wide on the quantities of airborne asbestos per- missible in the occupational situation. Wet processing has the potential for virtually eliminating the environmental concerns with asbestos dust both in fibre production and in the materials handling section of the manufac- ture of asbestos cement products. In addition, high efficiencies associated with wet process- ing mean that better yields are obtained and that the tailings which are dumped have a lower residual asbestos content. Since early 1977, ICI Australia and Woodsreef Mines have been engaged in a programme of research to develop and evaluate a wet mill- ingprocess to produce, from ore and existing tailings, high grade fibre suitable for use in asbestos cement products. The process has been developed through microscopic studies, labora- tory bench scale experiments, work in a small scale semi-continuous plant and product evalua- tion on experimental size Hatschek asbestos cement machines. A prototype mill with a normal feed rate of 1z tonnes per hour and capable of producing pipe grade asbestos from Woodsreef ore has been constructed and was operational from January, 1982 to July, 1983. A range of asbestos cement products have been made successfully on full scale Hatschek machines using fibre from ore and tailings milled in the prototype mill. Economic evaluations indicate that a wet process mill would be cheaper to build, operate and maintain than an equivalent dry process plant. A commercial plant has been designed 1. The Mary Kathleen uranium deposit is in north-west Queensland, approximately halfway between the townships of Mount Isa and Cloncurry, at long. 1400 009 E and lat. 200 44' S. The deposit Iwas discovered by prospectors of the Walton McConachy Syndicate early in July, 1954, and climaxed a very intensive ground search by hundreds of part-time prospectors. during the uranium boom from March to July 1954ò Numerous small deposits, mostly in the vicinity of Mount Isa, were discovered in various rock environments, but Mary Kathleen is the only large deposit and, apart from a few tons of hand sorted material from the Milo lease, is the only deposit that has been worked. Exploration of the surrounding area, and proving of the economic worth of the deposit, were conducted from the time of discovery until February 1956 by a geological team camped near the deposit. Proving was carried out by drilling a pattern of vertical and inclined diamond drillholes at fifty-foot centres over the outcrop. An adit was driven eastwards through the deposit. Metallurgical research and design work in the South Australian Department of Mines Adelaide Laboratories were based on core samples and bulk samples from the deposit. The signing of a contract in March 1956 with the British Atomic Energy Authority to supply 4500 short tons of uranium oxide allowed mining to commence, and enabled the planned construction of water supply, township and treatment plant to proceed. The open out mine and plant are now serviced by a modern township, four miles away, which is connected to Cloncurry and Mount Isa by road. Although little field work has been done since the exploration phase, this paper differs in interpretation from a previous paper (Matheson and Searl, 1956) in that it is based on a revised structural inter- pretation (Compana, 1958), detailed mapping of progressive exposures in the open out, and a re-examination of diamond drill cores.\

My forebears migrated to South Australia in the 1830s, 1840s and 1850s. All of them were literate but, because they moved about South Australia looking for work, family papers have become scat- tered and I am left with a few fragments. Some years ago I was intrigued to find among my fath- er's books a frontispiece in an old Anglican Book of Lessons. As can be seen Joseph, a mining smith, was also a Freemason. Around 35 Mt of industrial clays were produced in 1994 under the broad classifications kaolin (25 Mt), bentonite (8 Mt) and attapulgite/sepiolite (2 Mt). A brief review of world sources and markets is given as background to Australia's small production (0.5 Mt) but developing interest in industrial clays. Clay markets have changed significantly over the past 30 years resulting initially in consolidation and expanded production from traditional high-grade clay sources but also creating opportunities for development of new discoveries. Decline in the use of clay-based refractories has come at a time of strong growth in demand for refined kaolin for the paper industry. Traditional markets for bentonite as oil drilling muds, iron ore pelletising and foundry bond sands are mature and in overall decline. Today, bentonite has a significant share of the growth market in pet litter which a few years ago was dominated by attapulgite/sepiolite clays. Both bentonite and attapulgite/sepiolite have good prospects for increased demand in environmental markets both in containment of hazardous wastes and sorption of toxic substances. In common with all industrial minerals, markets for clay minerals will demand continuous improvement in product quality and consistency. Development of new and improved products will be increasingly the responsibility of the raw material supplier. In order to remain competitive, this will require a substantial commitment to quality assurance and research and development. Increase in market share will come for those producers able to translate developments in their products to cost savings or increased competitiveness for the industries that they Supply.
