The Beaconsfield gold mine processing plant is a complex operation and utilises crushing, grinding, gravity gold concentration, sulfide flotation, bacterial oxidation, cyanidation and zinc cementation to recover gold from the partially refractory ore. This paper discusses the challenges, developments and advancements throughout the processing plant since start up, which have culminated in a 25 per cent increase in the mill throughput over the nameplate design and a concomitant gold recovery increase from 75 to 92 per cent. The improvements have been attained via advancements in mechanical integrity, metallurgical review, process control and operator training, resulting in the current operation producing over 630 000 ounces of gold to date.

For many years it was realised that the methods used for unloading concentrates at Port Pirie were inefficient and labour intensive, therefore, when a decision was reached to standardise the east-west rail link from Sydney to Perth, the opportunity was taken to consider entirely new schemes for the handling of concentrates at Broken Hill and Port Pirie. After considerable testing and investigation, it was decided to install a completely new concentrates handling plant incorporating a tippler at Port Pirieòto replace the previous long established methods of unloading and dis- tributing concentrates to the operating plant.and the shipping berths. To achieve this, wagons of concentrates from the various mines are marshalled in a set order at Broken Hill and conveyed to Port Pirie in 56-wagon trains. On arrival at Port Pirie, the wagons are checked and moved to a position where they come under the control of the automatic wagon marshalling equipment.

The unique chemical and physical properties that can be displayed by polypropylene and its copolymer derivatives are enabling its development as a truly versatile material for water filtration. Well known applications include spiral wound cartridge filters commonly used for household water or the office drinking fountain, to pressure membranes that provide micro, ultra or nano size filtration barriers, whilst needle-felt or woven cloth filter belts or inline pressure bag cloths are well known to the hydro metallurgist and process engineer. A relatively new filtration concept that is generating interest and applications across all industries including the mining sector involves use of a unique fabric type filtering media made from polypropylene fibres. This technology not only has a vastly wider window for potential applications, it delivers an attractive cost saving alternative to the traditional sand media or diatomaceous earth type filters, along with potential benefits for integrated filtration units. This paper discusses the proven potential of the fabric media technology with examples of performance comparisons and confidence gained from full scale operating installations at mine sites and other locations.

A multi-wire borehole instrumentation system was used to monitor strata movement caused by a retreating longwall face at the Ellalong Colliery, situated in the Lower Hunter Valley in New South Wales, Mechanical anchors were placed at various horizons in the borehole which extended from the surface to the extracted coal seam. The vertical movement of the anchors was monitored during mining. The zone of major disturbance was confined to 13 times the extracted seam thickness above the seam. The average dilation of strata in this zone was 6 per cent. Above the caving zone, the tensile strain was under 2mn/m except at one location, where it was `xmi/m. The subsidence trough under dynamic conditions was flatter than that under stationary conditions. The subsidence also depended upon the extent of strata fragmentation prior to undermining.

After the minim operation, most raw materials that occur in the earth's crust require some form of processing or refining before they can be converted into a final end product. In the mineral industry these remarks apply to materials such as iron ore, bauxite, limestone, copper ore and many others that are found in Australia in large quantities. Processing plants for these raw materials operate more efficiently, however, if the feed to them is consistent in both physical and chemical characteristics. Such uniformity rarely occurs in nature so that some form of homogenisation, or blending, is required ahead of the processing plant. Bending also assists the mining operation itself by reducing; the need for selective mining and, by combining high and low grade materials, a more uniformly graded, commercially acceptable product can be obtained, thereby increasing the commercial life of a mine or quarry. Bed blending is the most efficient of the processes available, and following its development in the United States in 1905, over 100 plants have been installed, or are under construction, all over the world. The original process, the Robins--Nessiter system, has been the subject of continued improvements and refinements, so that economical capacities are possible from less than 100 l.t.p.h. up to 10,000 l.t.p,h. and beyond.

Delay scatter, although widely recognised, has rarely been studied with the aim of critically reviewing blast designs. With current trends towards increased deck charging, and the effect on the number of separate delays in blast designs, delay scatter is shown to have a rather profound influence on the control of initiation sequence and the ability to successfully con- duct pre-splitting and smooth blasting. Determination of realistic delay scatter distributions is the first step towards application to blast design. Delay scatter must be evaluated in terms of deviation from the nominal time, not in terms of deviation from the batch mean, since the latter is not usually known without specific testing, requiring accurate timing instrumentation. Computer programs using Monte Carlo simulation can then be developed to investigate the probabilities of out-of-sequence initi- ation or near-simultaneous initiation within any specified interval. The procedures have been applied to both production and development blast designs in Australia and Chile to improve initiation sequence control and to rationalise and simplify blast designs.

Roof falls and failures of powered supports were major threats at longwall face. Abnormal geological conditions were caused roof falls and shield damage. Therefore continuous monitoring and analysis of strata behaviour was imperative on real time for forecasting adverse behaviour. Novel PXI instrumentation system was successfully developed for continuous monitoring and analysis of supports pressure, leg closure and gate roads convergence. However, this paper briefly examines the novel gate roads convergence monitoring system with field applications.

The implementation of mass mining methods for large metalliferous deposits has led to the development and application of increasingly sophisticated automation and condition monitoring technologies in these mines. This technology aims to increase safety, equipment utilisation and monitoring of critical aspects of the underground ambient and geological environments. The communications networks required to support these aims and their associated technologies have evolved accordingly, and have done so in a demanding underground environment. The evolution of communication infrastructure for large underground mines has developed from basic analogue telephony to high-bandwidth optic fibre based systems. The latter is now the media of choice. More recently the developments in wireless broadband equipment designed specifically for underground environments have emerged to satisfy the needs of automation for mobile equipment and shaft conveyance communications. The use of internet protocols for industrial control and monitoring has led to the application of ethernet-based backbone networks as a standardised approach. There may also be a need for the integration of range of communications platforms in a mining operation to realise the full advantages offered by automation and condition monitoring technologies. As a result the design of the communications backbone networks for underground mines has started to become the domain of information technology professionals. Without these networks, the analysis of equipment utilisation is often not possible. The improvements that can be brought about by æsweating the assetsÆ and the transmission of business critical information are the most significant benefits of an integrated communications system. These benefits far outweigh the costs of strategic planning, subsequent specification and implementation of communication networks themselves. Future developments in mining systems and communications technology will continue to drive the demands placed upon communications networks as an essential mass mining infrastructure item. This paper outlines the benefits of secure high bandwidth backbone communications networks for mass mining operations and the need for a high degree of strategic thought and demand forecasting in the planning stages for these operations.

Productivity of mines can be improved by taking fewer, but larger blasts. The initial blasts taken in starting a mining block are restricted by the low amount of void or space to fire into. Block cave mines are using a blasting technique to blast areas that have less than the normally accepted minimum void to establish drawbells for their orebody development. This technique used in block caving mines can be used to improve productivity in mining operations that utilise other mining methods. Some larger blasts have been done in mines, using open stoping methods, which have had void ratios as low as 13 per cent. This has been possible with the use of the explosive gases to transport the broken rock out of the area normally considered to be available to blasts. This trapping of the explosive gases in the broken rock has allowed rock to be moved over 30 m, horizontally, to allow for more void to be available in the blast area. This gives the necessary void ratio allowable to fire larger blasts. This paper will discuss the blasts where this technique has been used in mines to increase the tonnes fired in low void situations. It will also discuss where this type of blasting may improve the productivity of underground mines. Figure 1 shows the how explosive gases have enabled the broken rock to flow out of a draw point without the typical air blast and fly rock that would normally cause a rope suspended sign to be damaged beyond use.

BHP Diamonds and their joint-venture participants DiaMet Minerals, Chuck Fipke and Stewart Blusson are currently developing Canada's first commercial diamond mine in the arctic barren lands of the Northwest Territories (NWT) of Canada. The paper reviews the early history of the project leading up to the discovery of the first kimberlite pipe in September 1991, diamond exploration techniques and the subsequent advanced exploration and development work carried out at the site. In many aspects, this exploration work represented a development project in itself. Coinciding with the advanced exploration work, the project team prepared an Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) and went through federal review of the project at the highest level. Warkworth Coal Sales Ltd markets approximately 10 different coal types.Since the mines inceptionthe development of mine scheduling and planning has been an ongoing programme. Resource recovery and coal utalisation have been the driving factors with this development as we strive to achieve maximum revenue for the investment dollar.The principal aim of this paper is to discuss the scheduling methodology as it is utilised todayhighlighting the interaction in the development of the final coal products schedule.Whilst the system is notperfect it has evolved and operated successfully in these difficult economic times and offers a practical and achievable approach to resource optimisation.

A research programme sponsored through the Australian Mineral Industries Research Association investigated two aspects of mine aerodynamics on model scale. These were aero- dynamic losses in (a) shaft/airway intersections and (b) losses created by mine cages moving in a combined haulage/ventilation shaft. The shaft/airway intersections studied included base and intermediate levels for both upcast and downcast. shafts, with one to four rectangular airways intersecting a circular shaft. Changes in intersection geometry were limited to the installation of 45¦ conical brow cutoffs of varying size and the addition of simple flow control devices. The relative air- flows between the airways and the downstream shaft were varied over a range employed in Australian mining practice. In general, experiments revealed that a small brow cutoff was significantly better than none at all, and a simple device such as a cone can reduce losses and improve flow stability at an intersection. The mine cage studies determined the effect on aerodynamic loss of cage area blockage, height/length ratio, openings in cage walls and surface roughness due to external structural members. Sulphide Corporation Pty. Limited has roasted a number of different zinc sulphide concentrates on its sinter machine which pro- duces zinc-lead sinter for an Imperial Smelting Furnace, and results have varied widely. The differences are considered to be functions of !concentrate particle size and reactivity. Amdel have used differential thermal analysis to examine these concentrates and two major effects have been found. Firstly, in concentrates 1containing small quantities of pyrite and chal- L [copyrite, heat is liberated at 400¦C to 650¦C [by oxidation of these two sulphides. Secondly, as particle size decreases, heat release from the oxidation of zinc sulphide commences at flower temperatures and rate of heat release In a sinter bed, the presence of some rite and chalcopyrite would help to heat the cc sulphide to ignition temperature in a orter time, while a finer concentrate would sult in roasting being completed more ickly. By 1996 ground control-related problems at Brunswick Mine had raised serious concerns regarding the safe and economical extraction of large portions of the reserves. These difficulties were mainly caused by high stress levels in pillars, instabilities resulting from wide spans supported by ageing support elements, and chronic difficulties supplying rock fill from the surface quarry to the underground workings, which resulted in many large voids remaining open for long periods of time. Significant changes have been implemented at the site since 1996, amongst which were a change of mining method, the introduction of paste backfill, the establishment of stress management measures, and the introduction of shotcrete on a large-scale. This paper focuses on the regional ground conditions associated with both the previously used primary-secondary mining method and the newly implemented pyramidal pillarless technique, as well as on some of the stress management measures implemented at the mine.

The New MetroRail City Project was completed in 2007 in Perth, Western Australia. The project included construction of two underground stations, twin bored rail tunnels of 1.4 km combined length and cut-and- cover tunnels and dive structures of about 1 km total length. It is the first major underground construction project within the Perth central business district (CBD). This paper provides an introduction to the project and describes the geology and hydrogeology of the area. Ground conditions varied significantly along the alignment from soft estuarine muds in an area of reclamation to very dense cemented sands and very stiff to hard clays. Deep foundations for the project extend down into the bedrock below the CBD, a Tertiary siltstone/sandstone. Key geotechnical hazards encountered during the project are discussed. The building protection methodology on the project is described, including damage assessment, condition surveys, monitoring and protection of key structures.

The iron blast furnace is the most widely used and efficient producer of liquid iron. The integrated steel works is however under environmental pressure largely due to emissions from sintering and coking. The combustion of coke breeze during sintering contributes to greenhouse gases (eg carbon dioxide) and is the source of much of the emissions of SOx and NOx. Coke breeze, the fines produced during coking of coal, is also suffering supply issues as coke demand increases while coking capacity is constrained by environmental concerns.CSIRO Minerals has been investigating the use of wood biomass/char as a substitute for coke during sintering. Wood biomass, or char produced from it, is an attractive carbon source as carbon dioxide can be sequestered into growing biomass prior to combustion. It has great potential to reduce the emissions from integrated steelworks and improve their environmental acceptability. Harvested biomass/char is also a renewable and sustainable resource. Samples of pine wood flour, sawdust and red gum wood char were characterised and used in small-scale granulation and sintering tests. Red gum char granulated as well as coke and could be used to make acceptable sinter. Large-scale sinter pot test were conducted with char to produce sufficient sinter for ISO quality tests and calculate sintering performance parameters. Results showed that coke could be completely substituted by red gum char during sintering without loss of quality and with actual improvements in sintering performance. Furthermore, gas analyses made during sintering showed that there were significant reductions in SOx and NOx when char was substituted for coke. It is anticipated that the results reported here, although preliminary, will stimulate an increased effort into further research on the use of char in iron ore sintering.

Historically BHP Billiton Alliance Coal Operations Pty Ltd (BMA) have generated resource models from widely spaced data points (drill holes). The accuracy of these models has been influenced by the degree of local structural disturbance of the coal seams and by the choice of interpolators used in the modelling process. In some circumstances unacceptable vertical errors of up to 10 m have been observed whilst mining. New terrestrial photogrammetry or laser imaging technology now allow the 150 or so kilometres of exposed highwalls in BMA to be rapidly, accurately and safely mapped and the three-dimensional images economically incorporated into resource models, reconciliation grade control models, drill and blast designs and for pit stability analysis.

Transport to and handling of iron ore at Port Hedland, Western Australia, results in the generation of airborne particulates that contribute to the atmospheric dust load, with concerns about potential local environmental impacts (eg mangrove swamps) and possible human health implications. Mineral and chemical characteristics of the Background soil samples were contaminated with particles of iron ore as martite octahedra and grains of micro-platy hematite as detected by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) in the 2.5 - 10 ¦m and 10 - 50 ¦m size fractions. Fossilized wood fragments similar to those observed in Yandicoogina fines ore were also detected in some background soil samples. With a predicted increase in demand of channel iron deposits (CID) ores and the inherently dusty Marra Mamba ores (eg West Angelas, MAC, OB29/30/35, Marandoo), in conjunction with particulate emissions from hot-briquetted iron and direct reduced iron (HBI/DRI) processing plants, there is the potential for additional sources of anthropogenic dust to contribute to background levels. Mineralogical and chemical characterisation of the entire range of particulates that could be produced is necessary for a complete understanding of their potential impact on the local environment.

Nickel laterite approximately 40% of the remainder caning deposits. ores are the source of the world's nickel with from sulphide ore Although laterite ores are near the surface and cheap to mine they require significantly more energy to treat than sulphide ores. The escalation of oil prices comiencing in 1973 meant that nickel laterite refineries using oil as an energy source were placed at distinct disadvantage relative to sulphide refineries or those with coal derived energy. The Queensland Nickel refinery commenced a construction programme; in 1980 to allow ore drying and power generation to be converted from oil to coal. Since late 1981 ore drying has been undertaken using heated air from two moving grate spreader grate stokers. The changeover from oil to coal drying proceeded without process disruptions. This paper discusses the plant changes required to allow the receipt of coal and the operating performance obtained from the coal fired air heaters.
