Base metal sulfides at the Currawong volcanic-hosted massive sulfide deposit in the Lachlan fold belt of Victoria, south-east Australia, were formed in the late Silurian, but D2 deformation of the deposit in the Devonian Bindian orogeny was responsible for structural repetition that created the resource. The primary sulfide lenses were stacked by reverse-sense shear zones within a volcano-sedimentary sequence dominated by dacitic intrusions and turbidites. Shear zones were localised along lithological contacts, including the margins of the sulfide lenses. The competent dacitic intrusions did not fold during D2; folding was restricted to the packages of metasedimentary rocks. Overturning occurs within, but not between, the metasedimentary packages. The overall geometry of the deposit is that of a duplex, but the detailed shape does not conform to idealised duplex types, probably because of post-D2 deformation. A significant complicating factor for understanding the deposit, and for resource evaluation, is the dramatic variation in deposit geometry along strike, which may also be due to post-D2 deformation. The present day configuration of the deposit results from constructive thrust repetition of what may have been a single ore lens and destructive along-strike disruption controlled by rheology.CITATION:Blenkinsop, T G, Macklin, D and Hammond, R, 2015. Scale build-up in titanium palladium alloy spent electrolyte heat exchangers in the residue treatment plant commissioned at Risdon, Tasmania in 1971 was shown to be a mixture of manganese dioxide and anhydrite (CaSO4). The manganese dioxide was deposited as a result of thermal decomposition of permanganate ions present in the spent electrolyte. It was shown that deposition of manganese dioxide and associated anhydrite scale could be prevented by prior reduction of permanganate ions to the manganous (Mn++) state by the addition of ferrous ions. In the plant this was conveniently accomplished by injecting into the inlet line to the heat exchangers sufficient zinc plant solution containing ferrous sulfate to decolourise the spent electrolyte. This action prevented deposition of such scale for another 21 years, until the heaters were finally decommissioned in March 1992. Measurements indicated that addition of the reducing solution lowered the anodic potential of the titanium alloy by 200 - 300 mV (depending on the solution resistance), but that it was still +300 to 400 mV with respect to a standard calomel electrode. It was shown that, if necessary, a small impressed current could be applied to provide anodic protection. Before scale deposition was overcome by the addition of ferrous sulfate solution, badly scaled heat exchangers were cleaned by recirculating a solution of hydrogen peroxide in spent electrolyte or dilute aqueous sulfuric acid, after laboratory testing of a variety of possible solvents for the scale. Corrosion tests indicated that attack on the titanium alloy by the acidic peroxide cleaning solution was insignificant.

Computer software has been developed to link real-time information generated by underground mine ventilation airflow monitoring sensors into a network simulation program to undertake network simulations and allow interpretation of key system data and operational changes. Results were used in the development of a computerised monitoring and simulation system to provide immediate or real-time data on air behaviour within each branch of an underground mine ventilation network through linking of sensors to the ventilation network simulation software. The outcome of the project is an online system that can report changes in the mine ventilation system, allow causes of changes to be isolated and rectified, improve balancing of available air throughout the mine, allow improved approaches to regulator setting and dispense with much of the labour used for underground ventilation measurement. The work activities in both coal and metalliferous Australian mines have involved examination and modelling of regulators, software modification and considerable mine site testing and optimising activities. There is some discussion on approaches to control of flow through ventilation systems with increased information. New systems will be part of a total mine information management system. They will have to be cost effective and justified by gains in productivity. New systems will need to provide simulation of contaminant production such as diesels, vehicle heat, strata heat, radiation, blast fumes and other gases. More robust real-time ventilation simulation systems will be required. Personnel and vehicle identification and production tracking will be collected to provide integrated ventilation system monitoring and control. This paper examines a study to gain greater understanding of computerised real-time airflow monitoring and control within the mine production system to provide immediate simulated information in each branch of an underground ventilation network and to allow interpretation of key system data and operational changes. A case study implementing a real-time airflow monitoring and control is discussed. Approaches to control of flow through ventilation systems with increased information are discussed. The concept of a system that can be linked to or be part of a total mine information management system is developed. Such a system can form the base for mine automation that allows mines to incrementally and cost effectively implement monitoring and control to further seek gains in productivity.

The value of iron ore depends on the grade of the contaminants. Scheduled iron, and the associated contaminants, provides mine planners with a measure of stockpile feed and blending requirements. Blending at the stockpiles is one approach to optimising iron grade, while minimising the variability of contaminant grades. These schedules are typically based on resource models incorporating geology and iron and contaminant grades. Resource models reflect best estimates of trends for each of the elements rather than the potential variability, which is critical for accurate short-term blending. Conditional simulation provides a tool to describe the likely variability of each element. Only recently has conditional simulation technology allowed the inherent correlation between elements to be incorporated into the process. This paper presents the stepwise co-simulation process used to simulate and describe multi-element variability for effective mine planning. A case study using the multi-element conditional simulation and the subsequent uncertainty in the schedule and stockpile planning is presented. This process supports proactive mine planning to minimise unexpected fluctuations in the final product.

In flotation, the property that is exploited to effect the separation of a mineral from an ore is referred to as its floatability. Assessment and quantification of ore floatability is of fundamental importance in modelling and simulation of flotation circuits. This paper describes the design, construction and operation of a new laboratory flotation rig that has been developed at the Julius Kruttschnitt Mineral Research Centre (JKMRC) to determine the floatability of different ores on a small-sale. The rig is designed for continuous operation. The major features of the rig are highlighted in this paper. An unique characteristic of the rig is a 9.1 L conditioning vessel. This provides a mixing regime close to plug-flow which avoids complications such as different collector coverages for similarly sized particles (which would considerably increase the complexity of ore floatability determination). The main advantages of this rig when compared to conventional batch flotation cells include better control of the chemical environment and the ability to determine froth recovery, entrainment and water recovery with increased accuracy. Preliminary tests undertaken with a high-grade lead/zinc ore from BHP Cannington are presented demonstrating the good level of reproducibility obtainable in operating the equipment.

Market forces, particularly iron ore prices, demand that plant operators achieve higher throughput in the worldÆs iron ore beneficiation plants without compromising yields or efficiency. This means that production cost per ton is of paramount importance and that all major pieces of Processing Equipment have come under close scrutiny to improve throughput at their most efficient performance levels and for the longest possible continuous running time. Without doubt the use of modern engineering standards and materials of construction has contributed to matching these throughput, efficiency and availability demands. However, often not enough attention is paid to the so called æinsignificant elementsÆ connecting this metallurgical equipment, such as chutes, pipes or other conveying systems, and particularly to the sufficient protection of their wearing surfaces. The result can be an unplanned and expensive outage caused by the wear related failure of such components. This paper will discuss:the theory of wear and the multiple factors of material and design that contribute to a reduction in wear; and the combinations of modern wear resistant materials available to todayÆs engineer and how, by intelligent selection and correct application, plant availability can be optimised. Examples outlining how these principles have been applied in South Africa showing some improvements leading to increased plant availability.

Mineral exploration and development can have a significant impact on the environment and local communities, in some circumstances extending well beyond the mine site. Poor environmental performance and consequent social impacts by some companies have affected the reputation of the whole industry to the extent that the principal public concern about mining is its impact on the environment. This is consistent with public attitudes about other major natural resource sectors such as forestry and commercial fishing. Traditionally the community has relied on governments to set the benchmark for acceptable environmental and social performance through establishing and revising regulations governing the mining industry. This however assumes that regulations keep pace with community expectations. It also does not take into account those circumstances where governments can have conflicting roles as both watchdog and project partner. Government regulations and industry self-regulation are not in of themselves sufficient for the minerals sector to demonstrate that it has adequately addressed environmental and social issues associated with the sector. For the minerals sector to improve its reputation it must first improve its environmental and social performance. To do this requires the sector to operate to acceptable standards of environmental and social performance and for the sector to be able to credibly communicate this to its stakeholders such as investors, non-government organisations (NGOs), customers, staff, regulators and local communities. Independent third party certification of environmental and social performance (æcertificationÆ), already operational in forest and fisheries management, is proposed as a mechanism to enable the minerals sector to achieve this. World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) and industry partners will be collaborating in a project to ascertain the applicability of æcertificationÆ to the minerals sector. A number of economic, social and environmental benefits are identified that could accrue should mining companies be able to differentiate themselves on the basis of environmental and social performance, an attribute evident in æcertificationÆ schemes. External audiences are seeking increasing levels of information and data on environmental and social performance of mining companies, be it local communities, investors, financial institutions or NGOs. Environmental and social reporting should be a key communications device that stakeholders can rely on as a reliable, credible source of information on environmental and social performance. WWFÆs contribution to the debate about environmental and social reporting has been to develop a process to assess the quality of environmental and social reports against reporting ingredients which WWF believe are important if a report is to be an accurate reflection of the reporting entitiesÆ environmental and social performance.

Microbial oxidation of refractory sulphide ores (particularly gold and copper ores) are well-established techniques that are increasingly employed because of their low capital and operating costs and environmental benefits. CSIRO has established a multidivisional project, the æBioMineral Processing InitiativeÆ, with the goal of generating new and improved high temperature micro-organisms for biological oxidation of these refractory ores. The project is currently focused on the discovery/generation of novel hyperthermophiles for the bioleaching of copper from chalcopyrite. As part of this project we are investigating the practicalities of genetic modification of iron/sulphur oxidising micro-organisms. The molecular biology of iron/sulphur oxidising acidophiles is still in its infancy. This work is aimed at improving our knowledge of vectors, promoters, selectable markers, gene transfer and expression in these organisms. The Acidithiobacillus ferrooxidans genome is currently available and genomics is proceeding at a rate where in the next few years we can expect at least one or two relevant microbial genomes to be sequenced each year. New genes that impart useful characteristics to iron/sulphur oxidising acidophiles will be available from published genomes and the study of newly isolated hyperthermophiles. We need to be in a position to clone and express those genes. This paper will describe the isolation, transfer and expression of thiocyanate hydrolase genes in Escherichia coli and At. ferrooxidans. Most common antibiotics are not effective against iron/sulphur oxidising acidophiles. Also, the use of antibiotics or their resistance markers outside of a laboratory setting would not be appropriate. Resistance to thiocyanate should be a useful selectable marker, without implications for human or animal health. Additionally, thiocyanate resistant iron/sulphur oxidising acidophiles might have application in gold bio-oxidation plants in arid areas where reuse of contaminated tailings water is desirable. The cloning of thiocyanate genes in broad host range plasmids under the control of E. coli and At. ferrooxidans promoters and the expression and phenotypic effects in both species will be described.

The art of flotation may be divided into two distinct branches, namely:-1. Collective flotation.2. Selective flotation.(1) Collective flotation is applied when all the valuable minerals in an ore are required in one concentrate, leaving ,only gangue minerals in the tailing. The method is applicable, for instance, to such ores as auriferous copper sulphides associated with gangue minerals only, or to silver lead ores low enough in zinc and other valuable minerals.(2) Selective flotation is applied when there are present in an ore two or more valuable sulphides, which cannot be subsequently efficiently treated unless they are separated from one another as well as from the gangue. For example, a silver-Iead-zinc ore, or a copper-gold-iron ore; where the iron is not required with the copper gold concentrate.In order to make these operations practicable chemical reagents have been developed, having power to exert definite actions on the various minerals when brought into contact with them in a water pulp.COLLECTIVE FLOTATION.In order to bring about collective flotation it is generally necessary to add to the pulp a frothing agent and an activator or activators for all the minerals which it is desired to float.SELECTIVE FLOTATION.The object of selective flotation is to activate the mineral which is to be floated, and at the same time to prevent all other minerals from floating.

Location The Boddington Gold Mine (BGM) is located approximately 120 km south east of Perth, Western Australia. (Figure 1). Located within the picturesque Darling Ranges, the land was previously used for forestry activities prior to mining commencing in mid-1987. Mineralisation is hosted within deeply weathered felsic and intermediate intrusions and volcanic rocks of the Saddleback Greenstone Belt.

EnergyAustralia is a state-owned corporation in the state of New South Wales, whose responsibility includes ownership and management of an electricity distribution network. Expansion of the high voltage distribution network in the Sydney central business district (CBD) includes the requirement to run an additional five 132 kV feeders over 1.7 km from south of the CBD to a new 132 kV substation in the northern section of the CBD. A driven tunnel is currently being excavated in Sydney sandstone beneath Darling Harbour to contain the new 132 kV feeders. Tunnel construction methods involve both roadheader and tunnel boring machine (TBM) excavation. This paper describes the design development of the cable tunnel, discusses the use of a geotechnical baseline report as an integral part of the contract documentation and provides an update of the current construction works.

The use of red sand as fine aggregate in concrete manufacture has been investigated as well as the use of fly ash as a cement replacement. The experimental work consisted of casting various concrete mixes including a control and comparing standard properties. Properties tested included compressive strength, splitting tensile strength, flexural strength, modulus of elasticity, water permeability, chloride diffusion, pH dependence leaching and particle morphology. The results show that the concrete strength is not significantly affected when natural sand is replaced completely with red sand. The durability tests indicated high water permeability and high chloride diffusion due to the porosity of the red sand concrete, likely due to the low slump value. Leaching tests did not exceed New South Wales EPA guidelines.

Longhole stope overbreak has always been a source of unwanted cost within the underground mining industry, and efforts to control it using various rock reinforcement systems have long been a rock engineering challenge. At the Pasminco Mining Broken Hill Operations trials have been carried out using an innovative cable bolt reinforcement system known as Rib-Roc. The system, based loosely on the Swedish Rib-in-Roc concept, utilises zones or ribs of heavily reinforced rock in the troublesome hangingwall and back areas of longhole stoping. The trials were carried out under a strict qualitative and quantitative scientific stope measurement program utilising rock mechanics instrumentation. Not only did the trial demonstrate the success of the system but data obtained was useful in implementing the system virtually as standard practice throughout the operation.

The properties of bearing metals are of considerable interest to mine engineers, since continuous running of mine and mill machinery is of vital importance. Of the several available types of bearing metal, the low melting point lead or tin base alloys are most generally used in mining plant because of the ease of replacement and the possibility of remelting scrap metal from old bearings. The most valuable property of these "white metals," however, is the plasticity which gives a self-aligning character to the bearings, enablingthem to adjust themselves to inequalities which may exist at the time of fitting, or which may develop during running. The object of the present paper is to explain in general terms the physical structures of white bearing metals, and to point out that constitution rather than composition determines the physical properties of these alloys. The same, indeed, is true of most engineering alloys. In steels, for example, a change in the structure may affect the properties to a far greater extent than a change of chemical composition.Structural changes in steels are produced chiefly by heat treatment. The anode, tank house and wire bar plant and operations are described with particular reference to those features of design and methods which are characteristic of this refinery at its inception.Reference is also made to auxiliary equipment, transport and materials handling facilities.The work of commissioning the plant late in 1959 is discussed and comment is made on the organisation of construction and origin of the equipment.LOCATION OF PLANTThe site chosen for the copper refinery is on level ground adjacent to the junction of the Mount Isa and the main north-south railway lines at Stuart near Townsville, Queensland. Blister for refining is received by rail from Mount Isa. Refined products are taken 10 miles by road to Townsville Harbour for shipment to other Australian ports or overseas, or despatched by rail direct from the plant.Adequate room for expansion was provided to cover copper refining and any associated industry. The layout of future extensions was planned and space reserved for them before detailing the original units of the main refinery.The initial plant also provides convenient storage facilities and is laid out to derive the greatest benefit from prevailing northerly breezes during the humid tropical summer.As far as possible, the working areas are located so that the prevailing winds cool them as they traverse the buildings.These factors are of very great importance since this is believed to be the only copper refinery in the tropics operating with all white labour and in any case the Company set out to provide the best possible conditions for its operating personnel.

An amount of explosives, whether it be cylindrical, spherical, etc in configuration, with a hollow cavity in one face or end is known as a hollow or shaped charge. When this charge is initiated, a focussing of explosive energy will occur within this cavity. This focussing, or concentration of detonation products creates an intense localised force greater than just the simple detonation of a conventional explosive, (without a hollow cavity). If this hollow cavity explosive is directed against a target material this concentrated force is capable of creating a deeper penetration than the same amount of explosive without the hollow cavity. If a metallic liner material is used in the hollow cavity, upon detonation of the explosive this liner will form into a high velocity penetrating jet. Depending on the explosive type and the liner material's configuration the jet tip can travel up to 10 km/s. Linear shaped charges were developed using the abovementioned shaped charge concept but instead of being formed about an axis, they are elongated and constructed along the principal axis. Therefore instead of creating a narrow circular penetration jet, it forms a thicker planar cutting jet ideal for linear cutting purposes. Using Linear Shaped Charges (LSC) for pre-splitting is expected to result in more accurate directional fracture propagation, while minimising lateral micro fractures in the surrounding rock mass which is required to remain undamaged.

Photoelastic and equivalent material model ling techniques for studying stresses and defor- mations and modes of failure in geological and engineering structures are described. The appli- cation of these techniques to the solution of tunnelling design problems is outlined. Models may contain heterogeneous components to simulate geological and man-made structures and may be two- or three-dimensional. Prototype construc- tion procedures and time dependent behaviour may be modelled. Examples of recent model studies carried out for the design of underground railway tunnels are given. Development of photoelastic and equi- valent material modelling techniques and facili- ties at the CSIRO, Division of Applied Geomech- anics are described, including a biaxial and triaxial frame for testing large scale two and three dimensional equivalent material models and components of full scale prototype structures.

The Loy Yang Optr, Cut is a brown coal mine bring developed in the Latrobe Valley region located some 160 kin south-east of Melbourne, Victoria. The mine has been designed to supply a mine mouth power station at a rate that will rise to 32 million tonnes per year by the mid 1990's. Continuous mining metnuds are employed using bucket Whtel excav- ators and conveyors. This paper describes the basis of the design of the Loy Yang continuous mining system ano cne experience of four years of initial operation.

Following residentsÆ concerns that the ongoing operations of Collinsville Coal (CCP) mine may be resulting in the release of contaminants, including products of acid mine drainage (AMD), into downstream environments, the Queensland Environmental Protection Agency (QEPA) issued CCP with a Notice to Conduct or Commission an Environmental Evaluation at Three Mile Creek. A key objective of the Environmental Evaluation was to assess the extent and magnitude of impacts to aquatic communities and their habitats. A multidisciplinary investigation examined a suite of physical, chemical and biological indicators to meet this objective. The study also aimed to identify contaminants of concern and the location of potential pollutant sources. Potential indicators of AMD, including elevated dissolved solids concentrations and low pH, were evident within the mine lease. However, significant differences in concentration of these indicators upstream and downstream of the confluence with Three Mile Creek were not observed. Although only proxy indicators of AMD contamination, these results suggest that the extent of impacts downstream is minimal. For the purpose of this study, physio-chemical indicators were selected on the basis of those best likely to provide an understanding of the likelihood of contamination, within the constraints of readily available long-term monitoring data. Ecosystem health indicators were adopted to supplement the existing data set and provide a more æroundedÆ perspective of water quality attributes within the system, generally unattainable by standard physio-chemical assessments. In contrast to AMD products, sediments were considered more likely to have a widespread impact on aquatic ecosystems. Waterways throughout the study region, including those unaffected by mining, have been affected by broad-scale sedimentation and were typically highly turbid. Due to the many diffuse sources of sediment potentially liberated within the catchment, the contribution of the mine compared to other land uses on total sediment loads entering streams is difficult to determine. This is clearly a major management issue for mines throughout the Bowen Basin. Streams of the central Queensland region display enormous variability in water flows and physio-chemical characteristics over a range of spatial and temporal scales. This variability presents major difficulties in distinguishing anthropogenic impacts from natural variability (noise). Despite this variability, impact monitoring by mines in the central Queensland district has tended to focus almost entirely upon physio-chemical indicators. The results of the present study indicate that a multiple indicator approach to environmental assessment is more useful for separating mine related impacts from natural ænoiseÆ and impacts from other land uses. In the absence of such information, by adopting the precautionary principle of Ecologically Sustainable Development (ESD), there is potential for an environmental impact to be incorrectly attributed to mining when other activities in the catchment may be contributing to changes in stream æhealthÆ.
