The ever increasing number of vehicles is leading to slow-moving and even stationary traffic sitting longer in traffic jams over extensive city areas. This traffic situation causes a sharp increase in pollutant emissions from vehicles, and high levels of pollution usually result throughout the built-up area. Reducing the pollution level by using traffic routing measures to speed up the flow of traffic in the existing street network is only possible in exceptional cases.In many cases the only option for achieving a significant improvement in traffic conditions is to shift the traffic underground using a road tunnel or underpass. Such tunnel routes suck off the traffic from large sections of the city, thereby easing the overall traffic flow. Thus on the one hand it produces a sharp reduction in pollution levels in the area of the tunnel route, but on the other hand it can result in locally increased exhaust pollution levels from longer tunnel systems that require mechanical ventilation. The air extracted by the ventilation system is blown out into the atmosphere either directly through the tunnel portal, or via a venting tower. Pollution can therefore occur in the area surrounding such exhaust air outlets.Thus if a tunnel is planned in a city, then closer investigation is required of both aspects: the reduction in pollution in the area of the tunnel route thanks to relocating the traffic and easing congestion, and the increased short-range pollution around the tunnel portals (shafts).

One of the key objectives in production from any mine is the minimisation of ore loss and dilution. This can only be achieved when the distribution of ore within the mine is known. The distribution of ore is usually evaluated from a combination of drill hole information and underground mapping data. Three-dimensional models of the ore distribution are then constructed by interpolating grades, contact locations and confirming these estimates through mapping. While the interpolation procedure can incorporate an understanding of the local geological conditions, it is an approximation and thus susceptible to some degree of ore loss or dilution. Naturally, such problems increase in areas of sparse geologic information or greater geologic complexity. Borehole radar offers an approach to decrease the interpolative aspects of modelling by providing a continuous image of some ore contacts. Borehole radar works by building a two-dimensional image of an ore contact from radio waves bounced off the contact from closely spaced positions along a borehole. This image can be imported into Datamine (or a similar design package) and incorporated into geological models of a given ore block. The results of a trial survey from the Mariners nickel mine at Kambalda are presented to illustrate the improved level of detail and accuracy that can be achieved through the incorporation of borehole radar into orebody delineation practice. Once implemented on a large-scale this technique has the potential to greatly increase the cost-effectiveness of long hole stoping at Kambalda, through increased ore recovery and reduced dilution.

The Grasberg is a large copper and gold open pit mine operated by PT Freeport Indonesia and located in the high equatorial mountains of Papua Province, Indonesia. The climate is alpine/sub-alpine with little seasonal variation in temperature and rainfall. The annual precipitation varies from about 3000 to 5000 mm over short distances around the Grasberg, but in general, an average daily precipitation of 10 mm per day applies and leaching of the overburden is continuous throughout the year. Mining commenced in 1988, and almost all of the overburden mined up to 2003 was potentially acid forming. The current acid drainage from this overburden is being collected and treated. From 2004 to the end of the Grasberg pit operation in 2014, approximately 70 per cent of the overburden will be potentially acid forming and 30 per cent limestone. A program of laboratory leach columns, field test pads and an instrumented full-scale dump was developed with the objective of defining scale up factors to quantify the acid and metal leaching rates and to evaluate the stockpile geochemistry and control options. The results of an ongoing seven year program have demonstrated feasible scale up between laboratory columns, field test pads and the trial dump in relation to material geochemistry and ARD evolution trends at Grasberg. The potentially acid forming waste types are highly reactive and maximum acid generation rate occurs within two to three years and that maximum copper release occurs within one to two years of exposure. The results also show that the net acid generation (NAG) test provides a good estimate for the potential acid load from overburden types. The chemistry, temperature and oxygen data from the trial dump suggest that oxidation and acid generation is occurring throughout the dump but at a decreasing mass rate with increasing distance from the toe of the dump. It is apparent that convection and/or advection are important mechanisms for the transport of oxygen into and within the dump. Key results and findings of the investigations carried out are presented and the implications of the findings for long-term ARD management at the Grasberg mine are outlined.

The cohesive zone has a significant influence on blast furnace operation and performance. The high-temperature behaviour of the reducing ferrous burden determines the properties of the cohesive zone and is studied in a laboratory using a softening and melting test. This paper summarises recent work aimed at better understanding the physico-chemical changes in a ferrous bed during softening and melting. Using a combination of standard, non-standard and quenched tests supported by optical image analysis, this work has highlighted some important differences in behaviour between lump, pellets and sinter as well as between the two lump ores and two acid pellets. As with the two lump ores, one pellet is denser than the other and the denser ore/pellet is also higher in silica.Within the cohesive zone, densification of the ferrous layer leads to reduced permeability and greater pressure drop. From the work presented in this paper, two key mechanisms of ferrous layer densification were identified. Firstly, the formation of fayalite, which melts at low temperatures, can act as a lubricant between particles and lead to densification of the ferrous layer under load. Secondly, reduction to metallic iron is topochemical and fayalite in the outer shell of the particle restricts gas flow to the centre and results in the formation of a wustite core. As temperatures rise, the wustite melts and eventually exudes out of the shell, occupying void spaces between particles and further reducing layer voidage and permeability.This work has shown that density and silica content are two key factors that result in increased densification of the ferrous layer. For porous Australian lump ore, the higher porosity and lower silica reduces the formation of fayalite and limits the formation of the wustite core, ultimately leading to a more permeable bed. The difference between the porous and dense ores was more pronounced with the introduction of prereduction to better simulate blast furnace conditions. This suggests that a porous ore gives significantly better cohesive zone permeability and blast furnace operations than a dense ore.The behaviour of fluxed sinter particles is different in that the silica reacts with lime to form dicalcium silicate. Minimal wustite core forms because relict hematite particles in sinter are only small and reduction occurs uniformly throughout the particle. Even with significant loss of material through prereduction, beds formed from sinter remained comparatively rigid. Studies using a typical blast furnace burden mix of 80 per cent fluxed sinter and 20 per cent porous ore showed that the structures of these beds at softening and melting temperatures are very similar to the sinter-only test. Measurements of bed contraction and pressure drop also confirmed that the introduction of 20 per cent porous ore into a sinter bed did not alter its properties. This is an indication that 20 per cent ore can be easily accommodated by blast furnace burdens.CITATION:Loo, C E, 2015. Adaptive mineral processing has to rely on spatially predicted information on primary geometallurgical parameters, like phase composition, size and shape distributions of grains from various phases, portions of value elements in different grain types. Naively, one would predict these parameters geostatistically and select an optimal processing for the predicted structure. This is suboptimal, due to various kinds of non-linearities in the problem. First, some primary geometallurgical quantities themselves are measured in non-real scales, like compositional or stereologically distorted geometric information. Standard geostatistics has to be replaced by compositional and geometric geostatistics, involving complex transforms and restrictions. Further, only partial and uncertain information is available, introducing a stochastic character to the optimisation problem. Moreover, many response variables leading to costs, outcomes and eventual effects of later processing depend non-linearly on the primary geometallurgical parameters, which implies that the final monetary value is not estimated unbiasedly by kriging. Finally unbiased linear prediction (such as kriging) is not the best method of prediction for decision making. The conditional expectation of the monetary values is needed instead. The impact of these problems is explained in this paper, with simplified examples, and a first approach to a general solution is proposed. The Jameson Cell is a high intensity flotation device, which utilises induced air from the atmosphere. It was developed jointly by Mount Isa Mines and Professor Graeme Jameson of the University of Newcastle in the 1980s. It is proven to generate fine bubbles, in the order of 300 to 500 ¦m, in a high intensity, high shear and compact zone contained in the downcomer. This aerated mixture exits the downcomer into the pulp zone, which is the quiescent mineral and gangue separation zone. A number of Australian base metal flotation circuits feature a reverse flotation stage at the head of the circuit. Testwork and plant operating data has shown that the use of a Jameson Cell in the prefloat cleaner application has further improved prefloat gangue recovery and selectivity. Operation of a Jameson Cell in a carbonaceous/pyrite prefloat cleaner duty at the Mt Isa copper concentrator increased copper recovery and reduced pyrite in the copper concentrate. Testwork at Zinifex Century Zinc Mine showed a decrease in zinc losses by the utilisation of Jameson Cell prefloat cleaner. Appraisal of a Jameson Cell in a scalping role within the Mt Isa Copper Concentrator indicated significant benefits could be achieved.

The geotechnical factors controlling the design of the open pit slopes of the Pasminco Century Mine near Lawn Hill, Queensland are presented below. Pasminco Century is a stratiform shale hosted zinc deposit in the Lawn Hill Formation that is overlain in part by the Thorntonia Limestone Formation. Both the mineralisation and overburden is located within a competent rock mass such that intact rock strength and discontinuity spacing is generally sufficient to prevent large-scale slope failure by breakage through the rock mass. Rather, overall slope stability issues are dominated by the major discontinuities within the rock mass. The deposit is located in a structurally complex regime, it consists of a synclinal basin which is truncated by easterly striking normal faults through its centre and northern and southern limits and by an unconformity on its eastern and western margins. Deposit geometry and slope stability is further complicated by small-scale folding, a pattern of northeast and southeast striking subvertical faults and north easterly dipping thrust faults with their associated fault emplaced blocks of Lawn Hill Formation in the overburden. The large size of the deposit requires a staged mining approach with the excavation of both final pit walls around the external sides of each stage and interim pit walls along the internal boundaries between adjacent stages. The deposit geometry and major discontinuities control not only the final pit wall design but also interim wall location and orientation, excavation sequence and in some stages the excavation schedule. Two and three-dimensional limit equilibrium stability analyses were conducted using both deterministic and probabilistic approaches to determine appropriate pit wall design criteria and to select a suitable excavation sequence and schedule.

BHP has recently constructed a Hot Briquetted Iron Plant at Port Hedland in the Pilbara region of Western Australia. Supply of iron ore fines to the plant is by conveyor from the companyÆs existing Nelson Point stockyards. The conveyor passes under Port Hedland harbour in a concrete segmentally lined tunnel, approximately 1030 m long and with a 5.1 m external diameter. The tunnel was constructed by a Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM) which both excavated the ground and erected the tunnel lining. The tunnel was bored between cut and cover in situ concrete portal structures, the TBM being launched from the Finucane Island side towards Port Hedland town. The alignment required lengthy gradients of 1:6 on either side of the harbourÆs dredged channel, under which the tunnel is bored with a minimum clearance of 8 m.The tunnel is fitted-out with:1800 mm belt conveyor capable of 10 000 tph;walkway along which a specially designed inspection/ maintenance vehicle can run; andtunnel services including power, light, fire detection and suppression communications, water mains for wash down and sumps and pumps for drainage.This paper gives a general overview of the design and construct contract, important aspects of the design and the construction process itself.

Freeport IndonesiaÆs DOZ (Deep Ore Zone) mine is scheduled to commence production in the second half of 2000. The DOZ will produce 25 000 tpd using mechanised block cave mining methods and will have a number of major improvements when compared to previous block cave mines in the district. The DOZ will have an independent and improved ventilation system, a flexible and efficient truck haulage system, and a more reliable crushing and conveying system than in previous underground mines in the district. This paper will describe the mine plan, haulage, and ventilation systems, and compare them to those used in other operations in the district.

Identification of geology and mineralogy in situ on the mine face is essential if mining processes are to be automated for tasks such as exploration, grading and reconciliation. Hyperspectral data acquired from field based platforms are ideally suited to these tasks, and are set to revolutionise the automated mining industry. Changing conditions of solar illumination introduces variation into the hyperspectral signal, which is unrelated to geology, complicating analysis of data. Thus, algorithms must be able to deal with changing illumination conditions and operate in a consistent and probabilistic framework, which is a prerequisite for data fusion with other sensors. To produce accurate classification maps of geology, algorithms must be developed that are effective under different conditions of illumination.The efficacy of three algorithms to classify hyperspectral data for geology mapping on vertical mine faces was assessed. These algorithms are the spectral angle mapper (SAM), and two machine learning methods operating within a fully probabilistic Gaussian process (GP) framework û the squared exponential (SE) and the observation angle dependent (OAD) covariance functions (kernel). Two experiments were done to assess the classification performances. The first determined the performance of the algorithms by classifying hyperspectral data of known rock samples acquired using a field spectrometer. The GP-based methods had a similar performance, with average accuracies and F-scores of 97 and 88 per cent (GP-OAD) and 95 and 81 per cent (GP-SE), respectively. Average accuracies and F-scores for SAM were significantly smaller (80 and 40 per cent respectively). The algorithms were then applied to hyperspectral imagery acquired from a vertical mine face at different times of the day, under very different conditions of illumination. In contrast with experiment 1, SAM and GP-OAD gave results which were superior to GP-SE and were entirely consistent with geology mapped in the field. Compared with SAM, GP-OAD was less sensitive to the effects of shadow and produced classified images that were less noisy. The GP-SE method failed to delineate even gross changes in geology on the mine face. These results show conclusively that in order to use independent training data (spectral library) to classify imagery acquired under a different set of conditions, algorithms must take into account variability in incident illumination. Measures based on spectral distance are inferior to those based on spectral angle.The OAD kernel within the GP framework (GP-OAD) is superior to the other two methods because:it provides a probabilistic framework;it is insensitive to variability in illumination within and between imagery acquired under different conditions; andit can identify and map geological zones on a vertical mine face using an independent spectral library, without a priori knowledge.

Traditional models employed to genetically link associated chromite and platinum-group elements have favoured crustal contamination as the primary process for inducing sulfide and oxide saturation. The association of chromite ores with crustal contamination is well established in the literature. However, in the 1970s (cf Irvine, 1973, 1975), Irvine demonstrated that crustal contamination was in fact problematic as a tool for inducing chromite precipitation in mafic to ultramafic magmas. His results are re-examined here, along with some attempts to reconcile them with the effects of adding Fe to the models. It is concluded that crustal contamination is indeed problematic based on phase relationships alone. However, the role of fluids as a compensating agent is evaluated, which may explain why crustal contamination may indeed facilitate oxide and sulfide precipitation.CITATION:Prevec, S A, 2015. Prior to resource modelling, sample scale data is normally grouped into spatial domains that reflect zones of homogenous properties. These domains are usually based on a combination of grade and other variables that reflect, for example, geology and alteration, or variables known to correlate with properties of the samples that affect downstream processing. Domaining and wire-framing sample scale data is a time intensive task and it is difficult to track more than a few variables simultaneously while establishing domain boundaries. This is especially the case in operations with complex data, for example, a combination of multi-element assaying of total element concentrations, and/or phase specific assaying such as sulfide sulfur, carbonate carbon, cyanide available gold, and/or downhole geophysical measurements. To minimise unintentionally grouping samples of contrasting properties within the same domain, unsupervised statistical methods are available that can automatically identify samples atypical of the domain, both as univariate tests, and as tests that take correlation within the domain into account. Unsupervised methods in this context means methods of identifying atypical samples that require just the selection of the domain and input variables. Thresholds are derived robustly from the data itself, and the results are therefore repeatable and operator independent. Atypical samples may be thought of as outliers, ie, samples that are separated from the ‘majority’ of the data. If these atypical samples are themselves spatially associated, they may be allocated to an alternative existing domain or allocated to a new domain. Care should always be taken to ensure that identified outliers are due to meaningful causes and not due to data coding and storage errors, although the identification of the latter is still valuable. *This is an abstract only. Emphasis is placed on appointing key commissioning staff early in the project to coordinate the preparations for commissioning and on detailed planning and tracking to ensure that the required commissioning activities are performed satisfactorily. The management of safety during commissioning is reviewed.

The competition between various options for the use of land is ever increasing. Commonly in Australia large tracts of land were un-encumbered by sweeping land use option limitations, but this situation has been rapidly altering in recent decades as governments are obliged to maximise the utility of the land for a broad range of competing interests. While the interests of miners have always been considered, the effects on limiting access to land for exploration and possible mining have not always been effectively incorporated into decision-making processes. As a result the challenge for national and state organisations representing these interests has been to develop a transparent process to allow for the mineral potential of an area to be systematically assessed and for information to be presented for use by specialists and non-specialists. Government agencies are called upon to implement government policy but also to provide accurate and meaningful advice which can assist in policy and land use decisions. Commonly timeframes are short and information can be less than complete. Nevertheless on-going decisions are made based upon the best available understanding. It is in this operational framework that the methods described in this paper are set. The paper describes a process for quickly and systematically providing advice on mineral potential for use by government agencies and ultimately the community within tight time and resource constraints. It is a method of combining the accumulated knowledge about mineral resources and their potential and presenting this information in an easily accessible form which can be used in a negotiation and policy development environment. Development of the method was undertaken to meet the needs of the Regional Forestry Agreement process in Australia. The method has been applied to study areas in New South Wales, Tasmania, Western Australia and elsewhere. Examples in this paper are taken from north eastern New South Wales.

"Geometallurgical variables often cause problems to conventional geostatistical workflows. There are many variables; some are compositional and some are non-additive. They often show: complex multivariate relationships undersampling relative to conventional grade variables unequal sampling; that is, all variables are not available at all data locations.A variety of approaches have been developed over the years, but geostatisticians remain mostly focused on modelling rock types and a few grade variables with an abundance of data. The problems are reviewed and a chained workflow is presented where appropriate techniques are employed in sequence to permit reliable spatial prediction of geometallurgical variables. The spatial models may be used to assess the value of additional data, for prediction of process performance, for improved mine planning and other optimisation tasks. The chained workflow will include data transformations such as ratios and normal scores that make the variables amenable to geostatistical modelling. Data imputation techniques to account for missing values are considered with special consideration to spatial correlation with the available data. Decorrelation techniques such as the principal components, min/max autocorrelation factors and projection pursuit multivariate transformation are employed to manage massively multivariate modelling. Full distribution modelling must be considered to avoid biases in the prediction of non-additive variables. The post-processing of geometallurgical models must be streamlined for robustness and efficiency. The precise workflow varies according to the specific purpose of the study. A geometallurgical model is currently built in two different ways. The first and the most common way relies on geometallurgical testing, where a large number of samples are analysed for metallurgical response using small-scale laboratory tests, eg Davis tube testing. The second, mineralogical approach focuses on collecting mineralogical information over the orebody and building the metallurgical model based on mineralogy. At Lules University of Technology, Sweden, the latter method has been adopted and taken further in four ongoing PhD studies. The geological model gives modal composition by the help of element-to-mineral conversion and Rietveld X-ray diffraction. Texturally, the orebody is divided into different archetypes, and liberation measurements for each of them are carried out in processing fineness using IncaMineral, a SEM-based technique. The grindability and liberation spectrum of any given geological unit (sample, ore block, domain) are extrapolated from the archetypes. The process model is taken into a liberation level by mass balancing selected metallurgical tests using the particle tracking technique. The approach is general and can be applied to any type of ores. This analysis attempts to reconcile existing ecological theories, rehabilitation planning goals and implementation constraints in the form of a rehabilitation paradigm that considers potential and pragmatic ecosystem transformation pathways. The framework prioritises multiple developmental scenarios for post-disturbed landscapes within a continuum of ecological outcomes. A feature of the framework is that ænovelÆ ecosystems and agro-ecosystems, having a range of commercial and societal values, are valid outcomes spanning the conceptual divide between the ecological functions of under-rehabilitated versus re-instated ænaturalÆ landscapes, especially in a changing environment. Landscape suitability analyses are considered to be fundamental to the incorporation of regional landscape and climate in the implementation of land rehabilitation and management strategies. Altogether, the paradigm could facilitate the identification of widely pertinent rehabilitation goals having direct implications at the regional scale of restoration ecology and acceptance of the need for ongoing commitment to the management of disturbed environments.CITATION:Audet, P, Doley, D and Mulligan, D R, 2012. The source and origins of the hydrothermal fluid of orogenic, or quartz-vein lode-gold deposits remain uncertain and disputed: Resolution would likely have a significant affect on exploration strategy. The gold-carrying fluid is interpreted to be a low-salinity mixed aqueous-carbonic fluid of near ambient pH and redox state, that may be derived either magmatically through crystallisation of granites at depth in the crust or through metamorphic reactions in a range of rock types. Classic isotope and geochemical tracers of fluid source have not differentiated these possibilities and have produced conflicting conclusions. Mass balance calculations show that fluid composition will be modified by wallrock reaction between source and deposit, and tracers should not be expected to give clear indications of fluid source. Fluid oxidation state can also be modified along flow paths. Tracers should be interpreted with care and with view to possible modification. Modelling of full flow paths and examination of the hydrothermal histories of proposed source rocks may be alternative approaches to determining fluid source.
