Resource estimation and selective mining of structurally complex, high nugget orebodies presents a major challenge to the Mine Geologist. At the Golden Pig BIF-hosted gold deposit in Western Australia, an estimation method has been developed that replaces an assay-based resource estimate with one based on mineralisation intensity. Subjective coding of the mineralisation intensity has a more robust connection to local grade than drillhole assays. Indicator variograms of the five mineralisation codes are well structured with anisotropy directions similar to observed structural controls. The proportion of each mineralisation code is estimated and a weighted average of the average grade of each code calculated for a block. Initial validation has shown that the model is a good predictor of the mineralisation intensity, and the application of appropriate local average grade for each mineralisation code gives a reliable block grade estimate.

The iron blast furnace is the most widely used and efficient producer of liquid iron; however, emissions from sintering and coking cause environmental pressure for the integrated steel works. The combustion of coke fines (breeze) during sintering contributes to greenhouse gases (GHG) (eg carbon dioxide) and is a source of SOx and NOx emissions. Coking capacity is also constrained by environmental concerns and economic factors, such as increased coke consumption, and short supply is leading to high prices. Improved coking practices, which result in reduced production of fines, are also contributing to the tight availability of breeze for sintering. This combination of factors presents an opportunity to consider alternatives to coke as a fuel for sintering. CSIRO Minerals has been investigating the use of wood biomass/char as a substitute for coke during sintering. Wood biomass, or char produced from it, is an attractive carbon source as carbon dioxide liberated during combustion can be sequestered back into growing biomass. It has great potential to reduce the emissions from integrated steelworks and improve their environmental acceptability. Harvested biomass/char is also a renewable and sustainable resource and can be integrated with good land management practices such as remediation of salinity affected land. Weeds, especially woody weeds, can also be used as a source of biomass for charcoal, and integrating char production with weed management can help address a pressing environmental issue in Australia. Previous reported preliminary testwork indicated that the use of Red Gum char as a replacement for coke resulted in a product sinter of comparable quality, improvements in productivity and significant reductions in SOx and NOx emissions. In the latest testwork, CSIRO has examined the properties of a range of potential charcoals, and has conducted a further series of granulation and small-scale sintering trials with them in simulated Japanese Steel Mill iron ore blends. Sinter fuels characterised and evaluated include industry sourced coke breeze, commercially available wood char and a charcoal from prickly acacia (acacia nilotica). Prickly acacia has been declared a noxious weed, is widespread in Australia, and is classified as a æWeed of National SignificanceÆ. The results presented in this paper support the notion that charcoal outperforms coke in many aspects of iron ore sintering and factoring in environmental considerations makes the switch to charcoal even more favourable.

The sinter plant at the Sulphide Corporation's Cockle Creek works produces a feed for the company's Imperial Smelting Furnace. The feed contains lead and zinc oxides and all the fluxes necessary for furnace operation. The quality of this feed is a major factor in furnace performance and the considerable flexibility of operation possible at the sinter plant has been used in efforts to achieve optimum operating conditions.Operating data is processed daily and information gathered from this source has led to three of the four improvements described.These improvements have resulted from elimination of gas recirculation, reduction of sinter returns sizing and alteration of ignition conditions and main layer fuel loading.

Coal dust is hazardous to underground coal workers and water spray is the most common and economic method for controlling coal dust. Previous studies proved that the addition of surfactants can improve the performance of water spray on coal dust suppression. The evaluation methods for surfactants vary from different studies. The zeta potential test is a common method for evaluating surfactants with ionicity. Generally, the suspension of coal dust with pure water usually showed a negative value of zeta potential. The addition of cationic surfactants can increase the zeta potential to a positive value with a small dosage, while the addition of anionic surfactants can only lower the zeta potential. However, there is a lack of comprehensive study to investigate the relationship between the zeta potential and the suppression performance for coal dust. The aim of this study is to reveal the consistency and discrepancy between the zeta potential and the suppression efficiency of a surfactant. Firstly, the mixture of cationic surfactant solutions and coal dust would be evaluated by the zeta potential test. The wind tunnel tests would then be conducted for the same surfactant solutions to measure and calculate the suppression efficiency. It was found that the addition of surfactant can increase the zeta potential and the suppression efficiency and it reached the greatest efficiency when the zeta potential approached to zero. The equilibrium of zeta potential can benefit the suppression performance of surfactants in the wind tunnel test. The result of this study can achieve a better understanding of the mechanism for coal dust suppression. The selection of surfactants will also be suggested for researchers or industries in terms of coal dust control. It would be more economic if a similar performance could be achieved by less consumption of surfactants.

Reliable predictions of the long-term water quality and water level fluctuations in a final void are vital if mine operators propose to decommission final voids in open cut mining operations. The catchments feeding final voids typically comprise a large proportion of coal placed or re-shaped spoil piles. Spoil piles from open cut coal mining operations have distinctive hydrological characteristics, which result in unique run-off behaviour. There is a need to understand the nature of spoil hydrology processes in order to predict the long-term hydrological behaviour and water quality responses of such systems. Preliminary estimates indicate that it may take 20 or more years for a void to flood. It is impractical for mine owners and operators to wait until long-term hydrological and water quality conditions have been established in a void, before reaching agreement with regulators about mine closure conditions. Reliable simulation of the long-term water quality and water level fluctuations in a void are therefore. The adoption of an agreed modelling approach and sharing of results from field data programs could result in the establishment of a database that could be used, with regulatory approval, for assigning parameter values, without the need for a specific data collection program for every individual void. Industry and regulators should agree on the model adopted for predicting post-closure behaviour of spoil/void systems. This will require reliable, robust methods for field data collection. This paper describes the field monitoring, data collection, model preparation and simulations undertaken over a three year period for Australian Coal Association Research Projects (ACARP) Project C7007. It presents the findings of that research, and provides comment on aspects of the project that were undertaken well and on aspects that could have been done better. Limited data is presented in this paper due to confidentiality arrangements with the relevant mine sites.

The mmmg of alluvial gold involves many deposits of theMesozoic, Tertiary, and Quaternary Ages in processing. Majorfeatures of the composition of such alluvial deposits are the lowcontent of gold and the small size of the gold particles. Atpresent, the gold-miners treat alluvial deposits in which a portionof fme gold (0.25 mm) exceeds 45 per cent. It is expected that by2000 these resources will be the main deposits mined (Zamyatinet aI, 1991).Under real industrial conditions the losses of minus 0.25 mmmetal are 50 per cent and more. The low level of recovery of finegold is observed not only at concentrators equipped with sluices,but also at concentrators equipped with modern diaphragm andpistonless jigs (Table 1).

The effect of delay time on fragmentation has been discussed for a long period but rarely in a satisfactory and unbiased way. Despite the efforts of many researchers, delay selection for fragmentation improvement or optimisation remains a controversial issue. Large-scale tests have been plagued with scarcity and scatter of observations, while small-scale tests have been associated with boundary effects and energy losses. Theoretical work is often used to produce explanations for available measurements or tries to simplify wave propagation and wave interaction to guide observation and practical work. The present work analyses results obtained from a relatively large number of small-scale experiments in blocks made of grout, and re-analyses results of previous experiments, to conclude on the effect of delay on fragmentation. It is shown that the main contribution of the delay is found in the fragmentation of the larger fragments of the blast, while the small fractions show almost no effect. Samples, where copper liners were used to inhibit penetration of detonation products in the rock mass, showed effect of delay only when short times were used and steady but poor fragmentation when long delays were used. Based on small-scale experiments, it appears that the fragmentation is optimised when a hole fires prior to the radial cracks, produced by the previous hole, reach the free face of the blast. Gas penetration may result in the development of few more fractures that affect the fragmentation of the largest particles of the blast.CITATION:Katsabanis, P D and Omidi, O, 2015. Modem open cut and underground mining in the tropics inevitably expose partially weathered and unweathered rocks to oxygen and water, leading to weathering and the release of solutes and often acidity as well. Historical monitoring data can demonstrate these phenomena. Three case studies from open cut mines in the north of the Northern Territory illustrate the deterioration in quality of pond water receiving drainage from waste rock dumps. The potential for deterioration of water quality was not recognised in many mine Environmental Impact Statements prepared and accepted in the 1980s. The examples documented indicate the importance of adequately planning for this near inevitable process. Retrofitting a mine water management system to 'no' or minimal release can be very difficult and expensive, and may not be feasible, leading to downstream pollution. The characterisation of acid and solute production potential of ore and waste rock, and improved dumping strategies and water management are very important to minimise the environmental impact of mining in the tropics.

When revegetation is a part of a rehabilitation strategy at mine sites in arid and semi-arid environments, its success can be strongly affected by the availability of water prior or during the time of seed dormancy, germination and early growth of seedlings. The semi-arid and arid environments of northern Australia are characterised by highly variable and erratic rainfall and hence the actual weather conditions at and around the time of germination and seedling emergence play a critical role in determining the success of plant establishment and the type of plant community that may develop.Using available climate data, an analysis has been undertaken and a set of indices has been developed which describe the suitability of the climatic conditions for rehabilitation. In total, eight sites from Queensland and one site from New South Wales, Australia have been analysed. It could be determined that regular rainfall and relatively short periods of water-deficit are key characteristics of climate suitability. A comparison of the locations studied allowed the separation into suitable and susceptible locations in terms of the availability of water, amount of rain and duration of drought between rain events.In our experience, specific estimates of climate suitability are rarely incorporated into the design of mined land rehabilitation programs. We consider that the regional intensity, seasonality and extremity of climate represent an overarching component of landscape complexity, which in turn will influence the development of post-disturbance ecosystems in these regions. This paper presents the outcome of climate analyses paired with the development of suitability indices. This paper presents the implementation of the eXtended Finite Element Method (XFEM) in the general-purpose commercial software package COMSOL Multiphysics for multi-field thermo-hydromechanical problems in discontinuous porous media. To this end, an exclusive enrichment strategy is proposed in compliance with the COMSOL modelling structure. COMSOL modules and physics interfaces are adopted to take account of the relevant physical processes involved in thermo-hydromechanical coupling analysis, namely: the mechanical deformation, fluid flow in porous media and heat transfer. The model preprocessing, level-set-updates, coupling of the relevant physics and postprocessing procedures are performed adopting a coherent utilisation of the COMSOL’s built-in features along with the COMSOL’s LiveLink for MATLAB functions. The capabilities and performance of the proposed approach are investigated by examining several multi-field thermo-hydro-mechanical simulations with reference to the block caving process in mines.

Stilfontein Gold Mine, located approximately 160 km west of Johannesburg, produced both gold and uranium from 1952 through to the early 1990s. On decommissioning the mine infrastructure, treatment plants, rock dumps and three tailings facilities were left to be rehabilitated at considerable cost to the mining company. The community that had grown up with the mine and had settled in the mine village were faced with deteriorating socio- economic conditions.   Mine Waste Solutions (MWS), a company with a socio-economic Vision expressly created by DRD (Pty) Ltd and Fraser Alexander (Ltd) for the purpose, took over the mine surface infrastructure with the objective of closing it down in an economically sustainable manner by recovering materials, converting mine infrastructure to useful purposes and re-mining of the tailings to recover residual gold to finance the project. A business case was prepared and presented successfully to investors and bankers and the project was commenced in 2003.   The paper covers the scope of the project and gives an account of the practical lessons that were learnt as the project developed over a period of five years. Key technical issues that are covered by the paper are the re-mining techniques that were deployed to clean up the old tailings dam footprints and the selection of the deposition site to minimise the incremental impact associated with the tailings and concurrent rehabilitation of the facility. In addition the paper will outline the positive benefits that were generated for the community and the improvement that was achieved in the physical environment.   The paper illustrates clearly how a mine can be closed in a manner that produces benefits for the community, the environment and the investor.

Slope instability is one of the major concerns in open pit mining operations. A significant collapse of the pit wall can result in injuries, damage to machinery and interruptions to production. A broadband microseismic monitoring technique has been developed for diagnosing the healthy condition of a target slope area. This technique has been successfully applied to an open pit mine in Chile. Our research has found that this microseismic monitoring technique can be used in open pits for tracking and locating a falling rock that is rolling on a slope, if a dedicated seismic sensor network has been established. In collaboration with other monitoring techniques (radar, laser scan, aerial photography), more accurate determination of rock rolling trajectories can be obtained. In this paper, an example of using the CSIRO microseismic monitoring technique at an open pit mine is presented. Results from an experiment where we used the microseismic technique for determination of the trajectory of a rockfalling on a slope are also presented.

This paper is concerned with the tracking of particles in the froth phase of an aerated water/glycerol mixture. Experiments have been carried out in a specially designed laboratory flotation cell that allows formation of a deep froth. Phosphorescent tracer particles of various sizes were injected into the centre of a froth column where they were excited by ultraviolet lights, positioned at the back and front of the column. The motion of particles was captured on a digital camera with a green filter. The images from the digital camera were then transferred to a computer and an image analysis program was used to convert the colour intensity to the concentration of particles at each location within the froth. The tracer technique was used to determine the dispersion of hydrophilic particles and the variation of the concentration of solids with axial and radial positions.

This paper examines some of the important aspects of mineral taxation policies and practices, with reference to the mining tax regimes of selected Pacific Rim countries (see Tables 1 and 2). The following subjects are addressed:what is æmineral taxationÆ?, basis for mineral taxation, types of mineral taxes, objectives of the mineral taxation regime, best practices, and mineral royalties. Many countries, in some cases with the encouragement and assistance of international funding agencies, are actively assessing the international competitiveness of their mining tax regimes with a view to attracting investment. However, these countries recognise that the mining tax regime is not the only consideration that is taken into account by prospective investors. The countryÆs geological prospectivity, physical infrastructure, labour force, political risk, and regulatory system are also important factors in the investment decision making process. Although it is probably true that an attractive mining tax regime will not necessarily attract mineral investment, there is a real possibility that an unattractive regime can drive away investment. For example, Hugo Dummett, general manager for discovery at BHP, hinted recently that BHP could cease exploration in Russia in the absence of positive tax changes. Dummett is reported as saying that if taxes æend up being as onerous as they are now, we really have to rethink why we are hereÆ (Mining Journal, London, November 27, 1998).

In blasting, a few or many cracks are driven from the borehole into the rock. But what causes the cracks? The most common theory of breakage consists of two stages; first the shock wave causes radial cracks to form around the hole then the gases penetrate into the cracks, and widen them and make them longer. Another theory presented by Brinkmann suggests that the back damage is primarily controlled by shock and that the gas penetration is the mechanism controlling breakout of the burden. He did his experimental work using blasthole liners. Recent research at SveBeFo has examined this matter further. In a quarry a number of benching holes have been blasted simultaneously. In some of these holes tubular Swellex bolts were inflated and decoupled charges put inside the tubes without stemming. Other holes were identically charged but without the lining. Finally some holes were also stemmed. After blasting the cracks in the remaining rock were studied. There was no difference in crack lengths between holes charged normally (no stemming) and holes where the charges were inside the bolts. On the other hand when stemming was used, the crack lengths increased for some explosives but remained the same for an emulsion explosive. In another set up blasted granite blocks were charged in the same way as above. Then we could also measure the bore hole pressure. The pressure gauge consists of a small carbon resistor inside a steel cylinder. It is called LHM (Location-fixed Hydrodynamic Measuring Cup) and is placed at the bottom of the hole. A smaller exit hole from the bottom is drilled for the cables. The paper presents the technique and the results obtained from both the quarry blasting and the blasting of the blocks.

Mine ventilation models are now an accepted component of most mine management systems. However, modern ventilation models also represent a highly structured spatial data source, defining underground pathways and connections across a mine. This creates opportunities to extend the use of network models beyond ventilation design, by using critical path algorithms to find pathways such as minimum distance or minimum time.This paper explores the use of ventilation network models to automatically analyse and calculate potential emergency escape routes. A variation of Dijkstra’s algorithm is used to predict complex pathways between any two points across a model, representing an escape route from an emergency area (such as a fire) to a safe location (such as the surface or a refuge station). Weighting can be assigned to paths to represent potential travel speed, obstructions or preferred routes. Finally, emergency considerations such as smoke or gas in some parts of the mine can then be incorporated into the pathways to force the algorithm to avoid dangerous routes and specify safer pathways. The Quesnell-Stikine arcs, in the Canadian Cordillera, are host to Triassic and Early Jurassic alkalic porphyry Cu-Au and calc-alkalic porphyry Cu-(Mo-Au) deposits formed outboard of ancestralNorth America in island-arc tectonic settings (McMillan, 1991). The majority of the alkalic porphyry Cu-Au deposits are products of a discrete magmatic event at the end of the Triassic, with a second and smaller event in the Early Jurassic (Mortensen, Ghosh and Ferri, 1995). Of the Triassic complexes, the Galore Creek alkalic intrusive suite is one of the largest and most silica-undersaturated intrusive complexes, and host to the most significant undeveloped alkalic porphyry Cu-Au resource in North America (Lang, Stanley and Thompson, 1995). Because of the common presence of feldspathoidal-bearing rocks in the complex (Enns et al, 1995), Galore Creek likely represents an end member example of the alkalic porphyry Cu-Au class. The Galore Creek alkalic Cu-Au-Ag porphyry district, located in NW British Columbia (Canada), contains 12 mineralised prospects (Enns et al, 1995; Micko et al, 2007; Schwab et al, in press) with a total measured and indicated resources of 785.7 Mt at 0.52 per cent Cu, 0.29 g/t Au and 4.87 g/t Ag (NovaGold Resources Inc, February, 2008). The Central Zone is the largest and best delineated. Other economically important mineralised centres include the South-West, Bountiful, West Fork and Junction deposits. The South-West Zone, the focus of this contribution, is a Cu-Au-Ag breccia-centred deposit with a measured and indicated resource of 69 Mt grading 0.42 per cent Cu, 0.69 g/t Au, 2.67 g/t Ag. Hosted in brecciated intrusive rocks, the South-West Zone is distinctly younger than the Central Zone and most of the other mineralised centres (Enns et al, 1995; Schwab et al, in press). The South-West Zone therefore preserves the late stages of hydrothermal evolution at Galore Creek. An EXTENDED ABSTRACT is available for download. The Wannaway Deposit is a structurally modified komatiite-hosted nickel-sulfide deposit. Until recently, nickel sulfide accumulations surrounding the Widgiemooltha Dome had been studied with a focus on understanding volcanological aspects of komatiite flow regimes and nickel-sulfide accumulation. Although volcanological features can be observed at Wannaway they are overprinted by several generations of structures associated with multi-phase deformation of the Dome. On the mine scale, two significant deformational events can be distinguished that control ore distribution. The first deformational event is represented by the formation of a layer parallel foliation within the footwall metabasalt and boudinaging of the ore into two distinct orebodies (mega boudins) during a north-south compressional event. Evidence of a second compressional event (east-northeast-south-southwest) is defined by reverse > dextral thrust-folding of the ore zone. The latter deformational event focussed the sulfide ore into thrust front positions where folded ore sequences are mined with stope widths up to nine metres wide. Later stage compressional and extensional deformation phases are observed but have minor, localised effects on the geometry of the ore zone. Four orders of control on the geometry and distribution of ore are interpreted through a combination of primary and secondary features observed at Wannaway. Extending the structural aspects of the secondary overprint features into areas of potential mineralisation has not only defined targets for extensions to the Wannaway Deposit, but has also aided to delineate high grade mineralisation and aid mining decisions. Obtaining an understanding of the volcanological conditions of formation, and more importantly, the structural evolution of the Wannaway region has been an integral part in optimising production.
