A study of the effect of nickel on the cupellation process has shown that a very low "nickel limit" must be imposed for cupellation (0·08 grams nickel or 0·05 grams when copper is present). In the presence of slightly greater amounts of nickel, lead tends to spreadon the cupel with detachment of drops from the main lead pool. In crucible fusions nickel contaminates the lead button to a small extent, and this contamination is increased.in the presence of either iron or copper. Nickel also causes "shotting" of the lead, this effect being more apparent in the presence of iron.Both the spreading during cupellation and the shotting during crucible fusion are considered to be caused by adsorption of insoluble NiO at the Pb-PbO interface, lowering the interfacial tension.Excess litharge crucible charges are' fused at 116boC. to eliminate shotting. A brief· soaking in molten basic litharge slag effectively reduces the nickel content of lead buttons. The solubility of silver in litharge slags is considerably decreased in the presence of nickel. Corrections can be applied for silver losses in slags but these corrections are not as accurate as with copper ores.INTRODUCTIONThis paper on the effects of nickel on fire assays for silver is the second of an intended series describing investigations into the fire assaying method.In the first paper, discussing the effect of copper on fire assaying processes (Guerin, 1957), it was shown that certain elements, because of their relatively low affinities for oxygen, will tend to contaminate the lead button during crucible fusion and scorification. The Sherritt Zinc Pressure Leaching Process is based upon the direct pressure leaching of zinc sulphide or lead-zinc bulk sulphide concentrates to produce zinc sulphate in solution and elemental sulphur in the leach residues. The zinc sulphate solution is compatible with conventional purification and electrowinning technology. The pressure leach residues can be treated for the recovery of elemental sulphur, lead and silver. With the conversion of sulphur to the elemental form, zinc pressure leaching allows zinc winning to be independent of sulphuric acid production. Direct pressure leaching of zinc sulphide concentrates was started commercially in October 1980. Continuing research and development studies have defined various pressure leaching configurations for integration with existing roast-leach operations, for grass roots plants, or for plants which are to have the roast-leach section completely replaced. These studies have included the treatment of zinc concentrates from various Australian producers and the development of process flowsheets for potential applications in Australia.

The Mineral Research Centre is located at Perth in the suburb of Waterford, adjacent to Curtin University of Technology and within a Technology Precinct which includes Technology Park. The Centre, constructed by the WA Government at a cost of $16 million and occupied in late-1994, comprises three separate buildings housing the CSIRO Division of Minerals, Curtin University's School of Chemical Engineering and the Mineral Processing Laboratory of the Department of Minerals and Energy. The emphasis on R&D at the Centre is primarily in hydrometallurgy as a result of staff expertise, extensive bench and pilot-scale facilities, track record with the industry and, very importantly, two of the occupiers being partners in the AJ Parker Cooperative Research Centre for Hydrometallurgy. Staff in the Centre have a long involvement with R&D agencies such as AMIRA and MERIWA. The hydrometallurgical focus of the Centre complements that of pyrometallurgy at the GK Williams CRC in Melbourne and the Centre for Mining Technology and Equipment in Brisbane, to ensure that the mineral processing industry in Australia has access to a complete range of expertise and facilities to serve its needs.

Truly integrated, quantitative, 3D GEOmetallurgical (or mineral system) characterisation, classification and 3D modelling should provide a cradle to grave unifying link across the exploration and mining value chain. All too often, spatially representative (quantitative) characterisation and modelling of a mineral system is delayed until feasibility stage, incurring a significant opportunity cost. The application of robust GEOmet characterisation methods early in the project lifecycle (at exploration stage) improves ground selection, exploration, and Mineral Resource estimation outcomes, long before there is a need for metallurgical test work. A combination of high virgin rock temperatures, deep workings and extensive utilisation of heavy diesel equipment has presented North Mine (A Division of North Broken Hill Limited) with challenging ventilation problems. These problems have been addressed in a variety of ways which include in the order of 6000 kM of underground refrigeration. The future of North Mine depends on the successful development and extraction of ore in excess of 1100 m below the shaft collar using mechanised cut and fill mining. The success of this will depend on the installation of a complex chilled water reticulation circuit in this area. This will involve planning and constriction of a number of large dams, installation of pups and turbines, and the successful commissioning of several large water to air heat exchangers.

Since the days of mandatory high cost pilot plant testing in 6 ft + 2 ft SAG mills autogenous griding/semi-autogenous grinding (AG/SAG), mill specific energy is now calculated by various empirical formulae and pilot testing carried out in small laboratory mills. Barratt (1989) described a method using Bond Indices than adding a single factor of 1.25 to arrive at the AG/SAG specific energy. In 1991 the Canadians developed the SAGPower Index (SPI), test using 2 kg of material in a 300 mm diameter mill. This test has been further developed by Starkey, Hindstrom and Orser (2006). This test now includes a Bond Ball mill work index test.The Macpherson test is still being offered by some testing facilities. This dry test requires at least 180 kg of material.Morrell (2004) formulated an AG/SAG specific energy generator based on a drop weight index Value (DWi). This DWi value is related to the Ab parameter and the material specific gravity. Morrell reconfigured the BondÆs Third Theory formula to cause extra power requirements to be inputed. This technique incorporates the material specific gravity (SG). The AG/SAG specific energy values produced using this method are susceptible to higher values of crushing and rod mill work indices.This paper offered describes a more simple method to generate AG/SAG specific energies. This programme incorporates Bond work indices, the JKMRC parameter Ab measuring impact breakage and the parameter ta measuring the abrasion rate, then employs a series of efficiency values nominated for each transition size (AG/SAG T80). These efficiency values have been compiled over the years from actual operating plants and documented reports.CITATION:Burgess, D, 2012. Batu Hijau is a porphyry copper-gold deposit located on Sumbawa Island in the western Banda Arc of Indonesia. The deposit has been evaluated from 54000m of drilling in 105 diamond drill holes over a surface area of 1.2km2 and to a depth of 1000m below surface (412m below sea level). A provisional plan is being evaluated to mine 642 million tonnes at an average grade of 0.61% Cu and 0.55g/t Au (variable cutoff) from an open pit in the higher grade portion of the resource. The deposit is associated with a caic-alkaline intrusive complex that was emplaced in a thick sequence of andesitic pyroclastic rocks. The oldest and most widespread intrusion is porphyritic to medium-grained, equigranular, quartz hornblende diorite. At Batu Hijau the western diorite contact zone was intruded by two phases of tonalite. The older tonalite is a stock increasing from 200m diameter at surface to 500m at sea level. It consists of quartz, plagioclase and hornblende phenocrysts set in a groundmass of similar composition. A younger tonalite intrudes the tonalite stock, quartz and plagioclase phenocrysts are more abundant and it has a finer groundmass than the older tonalite. Brecciation occurs near the older tonalite contacts but there are no breccia pipes or late-stage features such as pebbldykes or postmineralisation intrusive rocks.

It is important to understand skarn-porphyry transitions in order to use exposed skarns to look for associated and potentially larger porphyries. For such purposes, a good start is to understand the transition between porphyry and skarn in known deposits. In this contribution, we report the transition at Antamina, Peru, where skarns occur in and around a Miocene complex comprised of more than seven porphyritic intrusions. There are three types of skarn-porphyry relationships. The earliest intrusive phase, P1A, contains both endoskarn and porphyry-style quartz veins with secondary biotite halos. The porphyry quartz veins and endoskarns formed at the same time. Locally, the intrusion contains only endoskarn without porphyry quartz veins and is surrounded by exoskarns in carbonate wall rocks. In the third scenario, later porphyry (P2) intruding into P1A porphyry and skarns related to P1A contains abundant granular quartz veins and secondary biotite alteration but does not have significant endoskarn. The granular quartz veins also extend into earlier P1A skarns. The scarcity of endoskarn associated with P2 is related to the supply of Ca. The earliest P1A intrusion intruded into carbonates that supplied abundant Ca, therefore both endoskarns and exoskarns formed. In contrast, where the wall rocks of the later P2 intrusion are P1A or skarn related to P1A, there was little free Ca, therefore only porphyry-style quartz veins formed.CITATION:Chang, Z, Mrozek, S A, Meinert, L D and Windle, S, 2015. The Miocene Chichibu granitoids associated with the Chichibu skarn deposit are divided into North Body, South Body and Daikoku altered stock. Orebodies of the Chichibu skarn deposit are mainly distributed in the north-western part of the North Body and Daikoku altered stock. The North Body consists of magnetite-series granitoids ranging from tonalite to granodiorite and to monzogranite from the margins to the centre of the intrusion. The South Body consists of tonalite and granodiorite, and most of these rocks are also classified as magnetite-series granitoids. The Daikoku altered stock consists of a quartz diorite porphyry. The SiO2 contents of the granitic rocks of the North Body and South Body range from 61.6 to 70.7 wt per cent. During magmatic differentiation, Cu, As and Zn contents in fresh granitic rocks of the North Body and South Body increase with SiO2 content up to 63 wt per cent SiO2, and then progressively decrease with increasing SiO2 contents as SiO2 exceeds 65 wt per cent. Estimated pressure for the emplacement of the granitoids is about 0.5 kbars. Cathodoluminescence studies on quartz from those granitic rocks show that vapour rich two-phase fluid inclusions tend to occur in the core of quartz crystals, while halite-bearing poly-phase fluid inclusions occur in the margins of quartz crystals. The distribution of fluid inclusions suggests that fluid composition changed from low to high salinities during the growth of magmatic quartz crystals. Texture showing quartz crystals with an oval shape enclosed by radial aggregates of a mixture of fine-grained quartz, plagioclase and K-feldspar composing the groundmass of the monzogranite also suggests a pressure decrease during solidification of North Body. These findings show that high salinity fluids were present during magmatic differentiation and that Fe-Cu-Pb-Zn-Au-Ag skarn mineralisation of the Chichibu deposit was possibly associated with these high salinity fluids. The BIOX« process for the treatment of refractory gold ores and concentrates has been commercially in operation for 18 years. A total of six BIOX« operations have been successfully commissioned since the commercialisation of the process. Four of these BIOX« plants are still in operation today. There has been a renewed interest in the process the past few years with two BIOX« plants, the Suzdal plant in Kazakhstan and the Fosterville plant in Australia, scheduled for commissioning during 2004. Four new projects are also in various stages of development and are currently scheduled to be commissioned during 2005 and 2006. Research into the process are currently focussed on the two highest operating cost items for the commercial operations, namely power for agitation and air dispersion and cyanide consumption during leaching. Laboratory aeration and agitation testwork using the A340 up-pumping agitation system has shown that similar mass transfer rates can be achieved at slightly higher agitator power. The up-pumping system, however, eliminates the need for a separate blower and sparger system as air is introduced into the slurry from the slurry surface. The use of the thermophile bacteria as the final oxidation step during biooxidation has shown great promise. Reductions in cyanide consumption of up to 50 per cent were achieved when using the combination mesophile and thermophile process compared to standard BIOX« product solids. The combined process takes advantage of the milder oxidising conditions of the well known BIOX« process for the bulk of the oxidation and then uses the high temperature thermophile bacteria to complete the oxidation. The ASTERÖ process for the biological degradation of cyanide and thiocyanate containing effluent solutions has been proven to be efficient and stable. The process uses an activated sludge system with a residence time of approximately six hours in the sludge reactor. Heavy metals and metal cyanide species have also been shown to be removed successfully from solution.

With mining development on hold and other underground works in a slowdown, the development of nuclear wa te repositories takes centre tage on the American rock engineering scene. Three repositorie for commercial spent fuel-in salt, tuff, and basalt-are in the phase of site characterisation and conceptual design, and one pilot project for defense high-level wa te in salt is under construction. A repository design for crystal line rock has recently been postponed.Because of strict quality assurance requirements throughout design and construction, and because of the need to predict and ascertain in advance the satisfactory performance of the underground openings, much intellectual energy has been expended to analyse underground openings in the unusual circumstances of the repository environment. In the long term, these efforts will lead to an improved understanding of rock behaviour and improved methods of underground analysis and design. For the shorter term, a formalised ground control plan was developed, the principles of which may be applied to other types of projects.This paper summarises the status of underground design and construction for nuclear waste repositories and presents some details of the ground control plan and its individual elements.

The quartzite added at the blast furnace for the purpose of adjusting the chemistry of the burden inputs is shown to have a disproportionate impact on both the level and the variability of the hot metal silicon (HMSi). This conclusion is supported not only by direct correlation involving data from five blast furnaces, but also by mass balances. In one case the R2 correlation coefficient was 0.96 and the mass balance was accurate to within five per cent for a wide range of quartzite additions. The results indicate that as much as 43 per cent of the silicon in the added quartzite reports directly to the hot metal. Indeed, silicon from quartzite was found to be much more likely to report to the hot metal compared to silicon from regular sources (eg coke and sinter), reflecting differences in the activity of the silicon source.

In 1979, a test operation of an experimental blast furnace was carried out to investigate the behavior of a sort of formed coke, which was used safely by 30% of total coke charge in No.2 B.F., Sakai works, NSC, in 1975". The Mashec-type formed coke of 60 x 60 x 40 mm in dimension was crushed and screened so that it had the same size range (1011,20 mm) as ordinary coke used in the base operation. Preceding to the operation, some experiments on the properties of the formed coke and the effects of crushing on them were performed.

The wirebar furnacing and casting facility commissioned in 1970 at Copper Refineries Pty. Ltd. (CRL), Townsville, comprising a 70 tonne/ hour ASARCO shaft furnace and a Walker type casting wheel, contained several unique design features. Since commissioning, effort has been directed at improving metallurgical control of the casting process. This has resulted in the identification of optimum mould lubricant properties and the use of continuous on-line measurement of molten metal oxygen content. Casting defects such as cracks and surface porosity are readily explained and controlled using these techniques.

The Wild Dog gold-silver-copper deposit represents a new ore-deposit type in Papua New Guinea. The telluride vein mineralisation is associated with a Tertiary caldera and has similarities with that from the Baguio district, Philippines, Vatakoula, Fiji, and the San Juan Mountains, southwestern Colorado. The deposit, discovered in July 1983, has negligible stream silt and concentrate anomaly, and a float-train limited to within 300m of the prospect. The comparatively recent exposure of the vein system may explain the limited stream expression of the deposit. At least three major veins occur in the deposit; the vein system strikes north- northeasterly, dips 78¦W, and has a maximum strike length of 1350m. Veins are enveloped by a wallrock dominated by an assemblage of quartz-illite-pyrite. Four types of silicification related to multiple vein filling events have been defined on the basis of field relationships, drill-core intersections, petrology and fluid inclusion study. To December 1986 a total of 22 diamond drill holes (2304m) and 40 reverse circulation drill holes (1833m) have been completed on the deposit, defining a 750m zone of interest. The upper 30m of the deposit is oxidised. Much of the high-grade mineralisation in both the sulphide and oxide portions of the deposit is restricted to ore- shoots which strike parallel to the overall vein structure and are vertical to steeply westward dipping. They are defined geochemically by the lg/t Au cutoff and geologically by the relative increase in the vein density of auriferous grey-black sulphidic silica, the final vein filling event. Metallurgical studies and the results of close-spaced drilling have demonstrated the very good repeatibility on duplicate assays, and the extremes of grade variability of mineralisation over very short distances. The good assay agreement on duplicate samples .s indicative of fine, dispersed gold.

Electro slag remelting (ESR) is one of the methods used to produce high-cleanliness steel. In the ESR method, the product steel electrode is immersed in flux, and the electrode is melted by the Joule heat of the flux generated by high current. CaF2-based melts are mainly used as fluxes, but the electrical conductivity of CaF2-based melts varies widely among researchers and measurement methods. Therefore, this experiment aims to measure the electrical conductivity of CaF2-based melts based on the van der Pauw-Ohta method, which does not require the cell constant that is a fundamental error factor in electrical conductivity measurement at high temperatures. The measurement temperature was set at 1450–1600°C, and dehydrated Ar flowed through the furnace at 200 mL/min. Electrodes were fabricated by Pt-30mass per cent Rh alloy, and the electrodes were connected to an impedance analyser using a four-terminal probe. The electrodes were immersed in the melt, and the impedance and phase angle were measured by AC frequency sweep (50 Hz to 200 kHz). The electrical conductivity was then calculated by utilising the impedance’s real part values when the impedance’s imaginary component was zero. The electrical conductivity showed a positive temperature dependence. The electrical conductivity of 60(CaO⋅Al2O3)-40CaF2 melt increased with increasing temperature but was found to be roughly one-third of those of the previous studies. In the conductivity measurement of 60(CaO⋅Al2O3)-40CaF2 melt, the AC frequency with a phase angle of 0° was found to be different depending on the temperature and immersion depth. By sweeping the frequency, the impedance at the phase angle of 0° can be obtained, which enables us to measure the electrical conductivity more accurately.

With a view to producing increased target output every year, Indian coal mining industry is fast moving towards mechanisation but the present approach of mechanisation suffers from lack of standardisation, mainly due to nonavailability of the cutting data for various machine/rock combinations. The coal seams of the country are relatively hard in nature and the coaling machines are reported to be affecting production and productivity of the coal mine and the very trend of niechanisation. This paper presents the result of extensive study performed to visualise the cutting characteristics of coal seams of compressive strength ranging from 20 MPa to 65 NIPa. In a specially designed drag bit type coal plough rig, continuous recording of cutting forces was done with the help of a microprocessor based data logger and the specific energy of cuttability was evaluated at different depth of cut and speed of cutting. The geomechanical properties such as compressive strength, orientation and frequency of cleats etc. and different indices of coal seams were measured in the laboratory and field and relationship was developed for easy determination of specific energy.

The carbon-carbon dioxide reaction is the rate determining step in industrial processes such as the rotary kiln direct reduction process for iron ores. The use of brown coal as a reductant in the rotary kiln process has been shown to result in higher throughputs and lower kiln temperatures. No experimental data has been reported on the effect of coal type or the use of brown coal chars. Methods of carbon-carbon dioxide reacti- vity measurement are discussed. None of the methods have been related to direct reduction practice. No standard test has been developed to assess the reactivity of brown coal chars to carbon dioxide. For routine comparative work the gas analysis method of Okstad and Hoy appears to be the most suitable although some modification to the experimental conditions is required. For detailed kinetic studies direct weighing techniques are to be preferred. The factors affecting the reactivity of brown coal char to carbon dioxide are reviewed. Numerous factors such as the origin of the coal, pretreatment and ,physical and chemical differences have been found to affect the reactivity of brown coal chars but no data has been reported on the effect of coal type on reactivity to carbon dioxide.

Longwall faces producing in the order of 20,000 tons per day of raw coal are presently running in the Houilleres du Bassin de Lorraine of Charbonnages de France. Production levels of twice that level pose some technical and economic problems of coal cutting, ventilation, coal and equipment transportation in the.face and from the face to the sur- face. The peak productions of the equipment in use today, the results of trials with new equipment, the utili- sation of forecasting models (some in the form of software), allow us to fo- resee feasable technical solutions to these problems. They will first be considered in the best possible context (thick- ness, dip, non gassy, soft coal, good strata, no faults). This will give. the necessary conditions to reach daily output'of that level. A sensitivity analysis of these- figures to the effective natural con- ditions will then be undertaken and the implication of such a project on health and safety (dust, climate ...) will be carefully considered. A concise technical and econo- mical approach will permit us to fore- cast the economical interferences of such production units and specially the consequences of sudden variations of the output (downtimes, failures, etc). From this investigation, goals for technological development and re- search areas will be outlined to be able to reach this production target in the XXIst century.
