The COREX process is a technology for production of liquid hot metal on the basis of coal (without the use of a coking plant) developing by VOEST- ALPINE AG, Austria and its subsidiary company Korf Engineering GmbH, Federal Republic of Germany. CORED is a registered trademark of VOEST-ALPINE AG and Korf Engineering GmbH. The COREXW process is based on the idea of separating the process steps realized in the blast furnace (gene- ration of reduction gas, reduction of iron oxide and melting of the reduced iron) and including partial coking of the coal.

Ferrous chloride solution pyrohydrolysis is a successful IICI regeneration process which is carried out in either a spray roaster or a fluid bed. Pyrohydrolysis is not restricted to ferrous chloride only, every metal chloride can theoretically be hydrolysed. In practice, however, the conditions for ferrous chloride pyrohydrolysis differ from those of many non-ferrous metal chlorides eg zinc, lead and cadmium. Hence, a pyrohydrolyser could function as a ferrous/non-ferrous separator, eg an iron oxide and zinc chloride separator. Most pyrohydrolysers operate on solutions, in which case more than 50 per cent of the process energy is needed for heating and evaporating water. However, this disadvantage would be diminished by feeding a slurry to the reactor. Against this background it was decided to investigate the chloridisation of zinc ferrite which is an iron bearing solid with a non-ferrous impurity, and subject to processing and disposal problems. Synthetic zinc ferrite was chloridised in a tube furnace. The gas atmosphere in the tube furnace resembled that of a fluid bed pyrohydrolyser and consisted of HCI, 1120 and nitrogen. Gas composition, temperature, residence time and sample mass were varied. The experiments showed that complete (99.6 per cent) zinc extraction from synthetic zinc ferrite was possible in a simplified pyrohydrolyser atmosphere at 1100 K in four hours. The major strata control considerations which affect the optimisation of roadway driveage in highly stressed strata is the performance of reinforcement placed and the extent of stress induced rock deformation. High development rates and opening stability requires efficient rock reinforcement and stress relief strategies which maximise the integrity of the rock about roadways created. Current studies demonstrate the capability to reduce lateral stress distributions across panels and research is aimed toward a higher capacity bolting system. It is the intention to provide industry with more efficient reinforcement and stress control alternatives which will allow high production development equipment to operate without the restriction of delays caused by poor ground Conditions.

The Kintyre uranium deposit was discovered in 1985 in the course of following up radio- metric anomalies generated in an earlier air- borne survey. The latter survey was conducted primarily to acquire aeromagnetic data for diamond exploration and the uranium discovery was made during a subsequent campaign of base- metal exploration. CRAE commitment to the Rudall area for a range of commodities over a period of 13 years made a significant contrib- ution to the discovery of Kintyre. Other con- tributing factors included CRAE's multicommod- ity approach to exploration, management support and continuity in the geological team. The Kintyre uranium deposit (Fig. 1) is located on the northern margin of the Rudall Metamorphic Complex, 60 kilometres south of Telfer and 260 kilometres north northeast of Newman, in the Paterson Province of northern Western Australia. It is 700 metres inside the northern boundary of the Rudall River National Park (15695 sq. km) and lies between the Great Sandy Desert and the Little Sandy Desert (Beard, 1969). Intense weathering since the Permian has produced a subdued landscape around the deposit. Resistant rock types still retain an older plateau surface but it is incised by more recent streams. Other Proterozoic and Permian rocks form low, sometimes rocky, areas largely covered by aeolian sand.

A laboratory-scale fluidised-bed roaster has been used to examine the effect of temperature and duration of roast on the morphology of the calcine produced from a pyritic gold-bearing concentrate. Two mechanisms of oxidation, which depend on the roasting temperature, have been identified. For samples roasted below 550°C, direct oxidation of the sulphide occurred to form hematite with a porous fine-grained concentrically-layered texture. The surface area of the calcine increased with an increase in roasting temperature in the range 400 to 500°C. For samples roasted above 550°C, the first reaction was the evolution of sulphur vapour to produce pyrrhotite, which underwent increasing grain growth as the roasting temperature was increased. This had the effect of decreasing the surface area of the calcine. The pyrrhotite was subsequently oxidised to produce hematite.Leaching studies using cyanide solution indicated that gold extraction around 95 per cent was achieved at temperatures of 500°C and above, with optimum extraction, taking into account rate and cyanide consumption in the range 550 - 700°C. Hence recovery did not decrease with decrease in surface area of the calcine. Observed gold in leached calcines was mainly enclosed in thin oxide walls of the hematite, with minor quantities enclosed in quartz and silicate minerals.

The mostly submerged New Zealand sub-continent has a complex geological history and an active oceanographic regime that provides opportunities and challenges for offshore mineral exploration. Known deposits include polymetallic Fe-Mn nodules and crusts, polymetallic massive sulfides, phosphatic nodules, titanomagnetitie ironsands and placer gold deposits. Currently exploration interest is high with some 3.5 per cent of the EEZ under prospecting permit or application.   Article 76 of the UNCLOS convention allows coastal states to have sovereign rights over areas of the seafloor that are natural prolongations of the landmass that constitute submerged parts of the continental margin as extended continental shelf. New Zealand has substantial areas of elevated ridges and plateaux beyond the 200 M EEZ that form extended continental shelf. New Zealand has nearly completed a ten year, $44.4 M programme to define its outer extended continental shelf. New Zealand will lodge its outer limits of the extended continental shelf with the UN-appointed Commission on the Limits of the Continental Shelf in 2006, which if accepted, will enclose ~1.8 million km2 beyond the existing EEZ. Ocean Survey 20/20 is a follow-on marine mapping programme to underpin resource exploration and environmental management of the EEZ and extended continental shelf.

Clinoptilolites, modified with sodium, produced a material which has been tested for the ability to remove Hg (II) from aqueous nitric acid. The amount of adsorption depends on contact time, acid concentration of aqueous solution and initial mercury concentration. The study of the kinetics of mercury uptake revealed that all sorbents exhibit a fast rate of sorption. The highest sorption capacities were observed for sodium forms, and were up to five times higher than for the unmodified zeolite. The maximum sorption capacity toward mercury is determined as 0.093 ¦g/g at an initial concentration of 10.0 ¦g/L for a clinoptilolite from Tsagaantsav deposit (Mongolia). The sorption of Hg (II) has an ion-exchange nature and consists of three stages, ie the adsorption on the surface of microcrystals, the inversion stage and the ion exchange in the interior of the microcrystal. Sorption capacity decreases with the increase of mercury concentration. The presence of other metal ions such as Cd (II), Cu (II), Ni (II) and Zn (II) increases Hg (II) uptake capacity. Finally, sorption for Hg (II) was investigated in batch systems to evaluate the short-term stability of the sorption properties.

I have chosen this topic for my address with the intention of preserving a rather extraordinary record of recurrent additions of capital in the financing of one of the world's important silver-lead-zinc mines. The recitation of the trials and tribulations which fore-shadowed the rise of Mount Isa Mines to a position of relative prominence in the realm of non-ferrous mineral production may, I hope, be of assistance to some of the younger members of the Institute who may be called upon during their careers to meet similardevelopmental and financial problems.Mount Isa Mines Limited was incorporated in New South Wales in 1924 with an Authorised Capital of 40,000 shares of £20 each.In November 1925 the Company acquired the leases and water rights of the Mount Isa Proprietary Silver-Lead Limited for 6,250 fully paid £20 shares. Shortly thereafter, but in the same year, the £20 shares were split up into £1 shares, thus bringing the Authorised Capital to £800,000.The leases purchased consolidated and brought under one management the principal ore bodies of the Mount Isa area.Transportation facilities were indispensable to the economic future of the field, so the construction of a railway extending the Government line from Duchess, 54 ,miles to Mo.unt Isa, was assured by the passage of a bill in October 1925 by the Queensland Parliament. Under the provisions of the so-called Mount Isa Railway Act the Company was required to idemnify the Government against national loss on this branch line for a period of 10 years.

New Zealand Steel Limited is nearing completion of the environmental reporting and planning procedures for its proposed fivefold expansion to steelmaking at Glenbrook, and supporting mining operations at Waikato North Head. A report on the proposal to transport concentrate from the mining operations to Glenbrook has also been prepared and is awaiting release. This paper draws from these events, and by discussing some of the problems encountered, gives some guidelines for the preparation of an Environmental Impact Report.

In 1976, The Zinc Corporation Limited Broken Hill set up a plant to re-process a hill of tailing (Mt. Keast) from the original treatment operations. With the likely disappearance of this source of feed in 1985, an investigation was initiated to determine what other feed sources might be available. This involved searching through old records and photographs as well as a subsequent drilling campaign. The paper briefly covers the history of treatment operations and describes, as a result of the information obtained, the likely future sources of feed.

The realities of export competition require that Mine Management sig- nificantly reduce the costs associated with accidents and workplace ill-health. Newer management approaches are proving effective in reducing the Total Cost of Risk through a strucured Occupational Health and Safety Programme exhibiting the following features: ò Formal Company Policy ò Accountability for OH&S performance clearly designated to each level of management and supervision ò Effective utilisation of a Mine Occupational Health and Safety Co- Ordinator and a Mine Occupational Health and Safety Adviser ò Development of realistic OH&S Objectives ò Training of Management, Supervision and Workforce in Occupa- tional Health and Safety ò Development and adoption of Safe Work Practices and Procedures ò Effective employee selection procedures, control of Contractors ò Monitoring of the health of the workforce ò Collection, recording and distributing information on all Mine inci- dents, accidents, injuries and damage ò Ensuring that the Mine environment is healthy and safe ò Effective Emergency Procedures to deal with injury, fire, rescue and other situations of risk ò Controlling those Mine hazards which cannot be removed ò Adopting a high standard of Occupational Rehabilitation ò On-going visible Management participation in the programme to ensure that momentum is developed and maintained. This approach requires that Occupational Health and Safety be given equal status with product quality, maintenance of plant and output per- formance; its implementation is rewarded with improved morale and major cost reductions.

Silica-Kaolin Sand Wet Sizing The Bulgarian deposits of silica-kaolin sand are localised in the eastern part of the Danube plain. After wet separation the raw material yields two products - washed kaolin (different grades) and silica sand (different grades). The water washing technology includes: disintegration; spiral classification; hydrocyclone classification and dewatering of kaolin grades; hydroclassification; sizing using drum screens and dewatering of silica sand grades. Research and development program has started to improve the silica-kaolin sand separation in processing plants. Based on the raw material and tails characterisation data and the preliminary experiments using Derrick Stacksizer screening machines a silica-kaolin sand wet sizing technology was developed. The full-scale pilot flowsheet includes the following units: Derrick Stacksizer equipped with 0.43 mm opening Derrick Urethane Panel; 500 mm Flat bottom Hydrocyclone; Derrick Stacksizer equipped with 0.150 mm opening Derrick Urethane Panel; 100 mm Hydrocyclone and Derrick Dual Motor Linear Motion Machine equipped with 0.064 mm opening Derrick Pyramid Panel. The pilot-test data clearly demonstrate that the new silica-kaolin sand wet sizing technology is suitable for Bulgarian silica-kaolin raw material. There are possibilities to increase the silica sand recovery increasing the production of silica sand grade PK 0.16 and starting the production a new grade PK 0.10.

Flash X-radiographs were obtained of commercial electric No 6 and No 8* strength aluminium tube detonators in small-diameter cartridges of emulsion explosive at various times after fusehead operation. The trigger system for the radiography was based on the detection of light following fusehead firing via optical fibres inserted into the fusehead cavity during detonator assembly. These experiments were simulated using a finite element hydrocode with realistic treatment of the non-ideal reaction kinetics. Excellent agreement was demonstrated for the shape and position of the shock waves. In both cases, initiation of the emulsion was predominantly forward from the detonator. For the No 8* strength detonator, this initiation resulted from the shockwave delivered through the sides of the detonator, while for the No 6 strength detonator, initiation was the result of a complex interaction between shockwaves originating both from the sides and from the endcap. In the reverse direction (towards the crimped end of the detonators), initiation was only weakly dependent on detonator strength, being controlled mainly by the competing processes of rarefaction from the cartridge boundaries and comer turning of the detonation wave from the forward initiation. The consequences for field performance of small-diameter emulsions will be discussed.

Flash smelting of nickel sulphide concentrate has been practiced at WMC's Kalgoorlie Nickel Smelter for 20 years. The mineralogy of the concentrate from the original mines was particularly suited to this process. However, taking a strategic view, potential new processing routes should be fully evaluated as possible replacements for the current technology. The Vanyukov process has been under development in Russia for the past 40 years and has been successfully applied on a large scale to the smelting of copper concentrates, at two locations - Norilsk and Balkhash. The potential for the application of the Vanyukov process to the smelting of nickel concentrates offers a number of processing advantages, including smaller reactor and decreased dependence on fuel oil. This paper reports on preliminary investigations into the application of the Vanyukov process to the smelting of nickel concentrates. At this stage the investigations are limited to semi-quantitative comparisons and modelling studies.

In the enthusiasm resulting from the first discoveries of mineral deposits at a great number of localities in those districts, it became a generally accepted belief that the whole of that portion of Tasmania constituted a continuous metalliferous province. Mining exploration and development projects in Australia are being negatively affected by the highly complex regulatory and bureaucratic processes at all levels of government. These processes affect mining companies operating in Australia by impacting on timelines and the cost of developing a mining project. It is not uncommon for the granting of project approvals to take in excess of five years, meaning that mining companies struggle with productivity, efficiency, time frame and cost issues in respect to their projects in Australia. As the mining boom in Australia is moving from the investment to the production phase, it is now more important than ever to maintain a regulatory landscape that facilitates rather than discourages new investment.While one of our key arguments is that there is too much burdensome regulation and red tape in Australia, we are also strongly believe that regulatory intervention is necessary to ensure that appropriate checks and balances are in place to serve the public interest and manage environmental, health and safety, social and other development-related impacts that may arise from a mining project. However, the regulatory intervention in Australia has come to a point where it is excessive and starting to discourage valuable investment in mining projects for nominal return to the public. Excessive regulation or ‘red tape’ impedes productivity and competitiveness, deters investment and innovation and costs jobs, all of which ultimately impact on the growth of Australia and the standard of living of all Australians.This paper aims to examine and compare the federal, state and local regulations that govern mining projects in Australia. It will highlight how these regulations are unnecessarily complex, lengthy and duplicated and how they can be streamlined to reduce red tape. In doing so, the paper will evaluate the recommendations proposed by the Productivity Commission Report on Major Project Assessments released in 2013, which include the recommendation to move to a ‘one project, one assessment, one decision’ regulatory model.CITATION:Pope, C and Tannock, M, 2015.
