The Civil Defence has provided shelters for more than 50% of the population. Some of these shelters are put into rock. Since rock installations give large resis- tance against weapon effects and also by advan- tage can be used for several purposes in peace- time, an interesting development has taken place the last decades. In towns and cities you will find sport halls, swimming pools, bowling and shooting ranges etc in rock, which easely can be conver- ted to civil defence shelters. Some typical installations are highlighted in the following.

During the last decades, maintenance has changed from an ordinary repair activity to a complex function that plays an essential role contributing for the companyÆs results. The increasing level of complexity of modern equipment motivates maintenance personnel to improve both techniques, and management systems, in order to face the new challenges. Managing properly those modern means of production requires knowledge of methods and planning systems, controlling and performing maintenance tasks, in such a way that two objectives are achieved at the same time: system efficiency and cost-effectiveness. This paper shows CVRDÆs experience on evolving and implementing a model to plan and manage maintenance activities in order to achieve a higher level of performance on its operations.

A programme of testing and evaluation has been in progress at Isa Mine for the last four years with the objectives of rationalising ground support practices, improving installation quality and increasing productivity of ground support functions.Numerous innovations have been successfully implemented. These include the introduction of swellex rockbolts as the major form of temporary support, the use of splitset rockbolts as the primary means of support for the hangingwalls of cut and fill stopes and the introduction of dowels with pumped cement for general long term support.The installation of swellex bolts has been successfully mechanised throughout the mine using Tamrock automatic rockbolters and Atlas Copco BUK 11R drilling rigs modified for this purpose.

Highwall mining commenced in the Appalachian region 50 years ago. With innovative equipment design introduced in more recent times, penetration distances over 300 m are now commonplace. It is only in the last three years that highwall mining has become part of the Australian coal industry. Geotechnical evaluation is an integral part of the Australian procedures, and although still being refined, has already proven its worth. Statutory guidelines have also been prepared for operations in Queensland. This paper explores trends in equipment design, geotechnical prediction, operating techniques and statutory requirements with regard to highwall mining Australia's coal deposits. A quick assessment guide to assist in the evaluation of potential sites is included.

The topic for my address is Sharemarket Floats - Issues for Expert Valuers. I've decided to focus on three areas where current practice in the preparation of prospectus valuation reports for resource companies might be improved. My central theme is that the valuer for a float should augment the usual assessments of the value of the company or its assets, with some input on the way the share market might value the company's shares when they are listed. I will then look at the valuer's role in relation to vendor consideration, last I will look at his role in providing investors with some input on the risk dimensions of the new company.

The measurement of error in assays collected as part of a mineral exploration program or mining operation, including errors introduced during sampling, sample preparation, or geochemical analysis, historically has been undertaken in a variety of ways. Different parameters have been used to describe the magnitude of relative error and each of these parameters is related to the standard measure of relative error, the coefficient of variation. Calculation of the coefficient of variation can be undertaken in a variety of ways; however, only one produces unbiased estimates of measurement error: the root mean square coefficient of variation calculated from the individual coefficients of variation. The development of regional resource synergies in intensive areas with concentrations of minerals processing industries provides a significant avenue towards sustainable resource processing. Gladstone (Queensland) and Kwinana (Western Australia) are two of AustraliaÆs major heavy industrial areas. There are a number of successful regional synergies in both areas. In addition to the existing regional synergies in both areas, more potential synergy opportunities appear to exist which, upon implementation, could benefit industry, the environment and the community. To further enhance the development of such potential regional synergies, the Centre for Sustainable Resource Processing (http://www.csrp.com.au) commissioned research projects to facilitate the identification of potential synergies and assist with their implementation in both regions. This paper presents a selection of specific examples from both regions to illustrate the sustainability benefits from regional synergy developments. Although the composition of industries in the Gladstone and Kwinana regions is different both in terms of geography and industry diversity, similarities in synergy developments for both regions are apparent. Consequently, the examples discussed in this paper are organised around the key themes of water, energy and inorganic by-products. Comparison on a theme basis highlights success factors of successful synergies and demonstrates the range of benefits resulting from their implementation.

Diagnosis of the surface chemical factors playing a part in flotation separation of a value sulfide phase requires measurement of the hydrophobic and hydrophilic species that are statistically different between the concentrate and tail streams. Statistical methods, based on the monolayer-sensitive time of flight secondary ion mass spectrometry (ToF-SIMS) technique, have been developed towards this ultimate aim by measuring hydrophobic species (collector ions, dimers and metal complexes, polysulfides) as well as hydrophobic metal ions, precipitates and added depressant species. Reliable identification of specific mineral particles is central to this statistical analysis. A chalcopyrite/pyrite/ sphalerite mineral mixture conditioned at pH 9 for 20 minutes to study transfer of Cu from chalcopyrite via solution to the other two mineral surfaces, since this mechanism can be responsible for their inadvertent flotation in copper recovery, showed no statistical difference in the copper intensities on pyrite and sphalerite (selected from Fe and Zn images) after this conditioning. Principal component analysis (PCA) identifies combinations of factors strongly correlated (positively or negatively) in images or spectra from sets of data. In images, PCA selects these correlations from the mass spectra recorded at each of 256 ¦ 256 pixels in a selected area of particles. In the image mode, PCA has proved to be a much better method of selecting particles by mineral phase with clearer definition of particle boundaries due to multi-variable recognition. It has clearly separated a statistical difference in copper intensities between the sphalerite and pyrite phases. The PCA method has been applied to concentrate and tails samples collected from the Inco Matte Concentrator demonstrating extensive CuOH and NiOH transfer between the chalcocite (Cc) and heazlewoodite (Hz) minerals. Statistical differences illustrate the important discriminating depressant action of NiOH in flotation despite the activation of Hz by Cu transfer. The adsorption of the collector at specifically-identified Cu sites has been elucidated by the study. Importantly, the statistical analysis has been able to confirm some mechanisms and deny others proposed to control recovery and selectivity giving more focus on the control factors.

Zircon is extensively used as moulding sand in the production of steel and high-duty iron castings. To achieve a satisfactory grade of zircon concentrate, the zircon particles may need ,to have surface coatings removed, as such coatings can hinder electrostatic and magnetic separation of zircon from associated minerals. Xn addition the presence of surface coatings on the zircon. particles can cause sinterins and fusion of the zircon to the east metal resulting in "burnt-on" sand or fritting of the casting. "Burnon" necessitates cleaning of the casting by grinding or chipping, which is expensive and results in loss of definition on the casting face.Hudson (1966) has pointed out ,that some coatings on mineral sands are lightly-adhering clays which can be removed quite readily by agitating the sands in water for a few minutes-thus their removal constitutesno problem. However, the heavy gingery coloured coating which adheres strongly to the surface of the particles in some deposits, and which has generally been considered to be a form of iron oxide (Baker, 1962; Hudson, 1966), cannot be removed effectively by attrition cleaning in water (Hudson, 1966). Such coatings limit the usefulness of these concentrates in the foundry industry.An investigation of strongly-adhering coatings on "ginger zircon" concentrates from the Yoganup deposit of Westralian Sands Ltd has shown that the stain consists of a cemented mixtvre of hydrated iron and aluminium oxides and kaolin minerals, and that it can be removed by a relatively low cost treatment.IDENTIFICATION OF THE STAIN BY XRDX-ray powder diffraction (XRD) patterns were obtained from small samples of stain scraped, individually, from the surface of hand-picked zircon and ilmenite crystals. These scrapings were mounted on quartz fibres and exposed to CoKa radiation in a 57 mm Debye camera. To avoid heavy fogging of the x-ray films, a substantial amount of the iron oxides was preferentially leached from the scrapings (before mounting) with an ammonium oxalate-oxalic acid solution (Rooksby, 1961). In common with several great orebodies and mineral camps around the world Broken Hill has been the subject of state-of-the-art technical and scientific scrutiny during its long working life. During the early years geological interest in Broken Hill tended to be directed at the body for its intrinsic scientific worth, mainly on account of its large size, high grade and wealth of mineral species. For much of the last 60 years the interest has had a more applied motivation, namely, to assist the search for either repetitions in the Broken Hill field or analogues in other terrains. This paper looks at the major changes in geological concepts and exploration techniques applied at Broken Hill and attempts to assess their impact.

This work provides a comparison between the most commonly used classification equipment in the treatment of minerals - hydrocyclones and spiral classifiers - considering their applications and costs. Although in use for decades in the mining industry, spiral classifiers have lost a lot of their importance due to the development of cyclones. This trend, however, is now being reversed, and in the last few years there has been an increasing interest in spiral classifiers, in view of their advantages over cyclones, such as: ò possibility of obtaining more thickened solids; ò less by-pass; ò great durability; ò lower operating cost. This work approaches the different aspects related to the installation, operation and costs of maintenance of these machines, giving a critical comparison of the involved costs.

Many mining operations developed in the last 15 years have not performed to expectations. Problems experienced include lower than planned development and production rates, geotechnical/stability problems, unplanned dilution, reduced metallurgical performance and unbudgeted capital/operating costs. Most of these problems can be directly attributed to decisions made on the basis of geoscience interpretations and estimates. Recent case studies continue to provide examples of unplanned events linked to the use of geoscience information. These studies illustrate the need to improve the way geological information is used in mine feasibility and operations. Comprehensive assessment of the consequences of inappropriate technical decision making is still rare; however, the information that is reported highlights the significant financial impact on a companyÆs bottom line.

Interest in mining narrow, vein-type ones has increased world-wide during the last few years despite the fact that prices of metals have not risen in proportion as production costs of mining, such as labour and energy.In many mines, where narrow ones are mined, the mining technique and equipment used have been poorly mechanized. The mining methods have been cut-and-fill or shrinkage stoping. Pneumatic jack-legs have been used for drilling and slushers have been used for loading.The methods that have been used can be called the "first-generation" methods.Work has been very hard for miners. It has been dangerous and exhausting.Production volumes of mines, and a s a result of that, also profits have been low.

After 15 years of operation Australian Mineral Foundation is at the cross-roads: Affected significantly in its last 21 years by Australian dollar devaluation, lower mineral industry activity and severe cut backs in the petroleum industry due to the low oil price, a re-evaluation of its goals and industry support is urgently needed. Industry support, strong at the start, has not kept pace with inflation and expectations of a totally self supporting organisation have proved impossible to sustain. Nevertheless, with a change in emphasis in education programmes, continued creative development of information services and more particularly greater awareness by industry of the services available and hence greater use of the services, industry support is expected to increase. Indeed, industry, it is believed, will accept its responsibility.

The Kencana underground gold mine comprises two world-class epithermal vein deposits located in the North Maluku province of Indonesia on Halmahera Island. The K1 deposit has a recent extensive mining history, whilst development of the K2 deposit is in progress. Kencana epithermal vein zones have a relatively simple planar geometry dipping 25 to 45¦ towards the East and extend 400 to 600 m along strike and down dip. True width ranges from 1 m to 20 m. Economic gold grades are generally associated with two distinct mineralisation styles: Main Zone û continuous material characterised by classic epithermal vein textures including crustiform/colloform chalky white quartz- adularia sulfide banded and brecciated veining typically grading 10 to 40 g/t Au. Bonanza Zone û semi-continuous identifiable zones within the Main Zone. Characterised by brecciated quartz-adularia sulfide banded vein æginguroÆ material typically grading 80 to 200 g/t Au. Associated with this æBonanzaÆ zone are gold grades averaging around ten times higher than the surrounding Main Zone. At the resource evaluation stage, these deposits are typically drilled on approximately 25 m by 25 m spacing. This drilling density is usually adequate to allow robust estimation of global resources, including the lateral definition of æBonanzaÆ style mineralisation. It appears intuitive at the resource definition stage to separately model the æBonanza ZoneÆ using deterministic methods such as manual interpretation and wireframing. Inevitably, however, such deterministic methods result in a simplified version of reality. Whilst the geologistÆs interpretation of the overall vein volume and lateral extent of æBonanzaÆ mineralisation has proven to be remarkably accurate, close-spaced sampling and mapping of the K1 orebody has shown that this style of mineralisation exhibits extreme short-scale geometric and spatial variability. A consequence of this short-scale geometric and grade variability is the significant uncertainty with reporting these Resources and Reserves at relatively small reporting time periods such as monthly production periods. The mining method employed at Kencana often involves extracting the full width of the mineralised vein with multiple mining passes over several months. In the past it has proven difficult to achieve accurate production budgets and forecasts at Kencana as any given mining schedule based on the resource model is acutely sensitive to the quantity and location of æBonanzaÆ material. Moreover, the degree of uncertainty or risk associated with a mining schedule significantly increases as the reporting time period becomes smaller. A further deficiency of deterministic methods for geometric modelling is the inherent lack of ability to derive confidence intervals for quantifying uncertainty and risk. The use of conditional simulation techniques can help overcome this deficiency. Geostatistical conditional simulation techniques have been applied at Kencana in an attempt to model and quantify geological and grade variability in the upcoming K2 orebody based on the experience to date with mining the K1 orebody. At Kencana, conditional simulation has provided a successful means to quantify uncertainties and risks associated with various data densities and reporting time periods. The results of this project have provided managers and planners with a clearer understanding of the likely variances and risks associated with predicting gold metal production at key reporting time periods based on data at the resource model level of resolution. With corporate requirements to adhere to mining budgets/quarterly schedules, this type of analysis allows a more scientific approach to estimating grade uncertainty in the mining schedule. Until now this has been difficult to quantify due to the extreme gold metal variability. The availability of this type of analysis allows a time-efficient rationalisation on redesigns of the mining shapes and effective communication of the likely uncertainties involved.

One of the most praninent Bouguer anomaly features in the Broken Hill District is the long wavelength high of 10-15 ngals above background which forms a northeast trending, oval zone sane 15 km by 45 km with Broken Hill on its northern gradient. Rock density measurements and modelling indicate that this anomaly can be explained by the presence of generally relatively higher density meta- sediments extending from the surface to a depth of about 2000 m. The regional Bouguer anomaly data show that the Willyama Block and Euriowie Block are mostly overlain by a fairly smooth Bouguer anomaly high in the range 5-15 mgals, whilst the surrounding younger sediment covered areas, including the Mundi Mundi Plain, Murray Basin fringe and Bancannia Trough, are mostly overlain by lows which range to minus 30 mgals. Thus in terms of the gravity pattern the Willyama and Euriowie Blocks form a fairly continuous and haogeneous entity. However, the 5-10 mgals relative low over part of the Torrowangee Synclinorial Zone indicates that the Adelaidean System metasediments are in aggregate slightly less dense than the Willyama Supergroup metasediments. The low can be modelled to indicate a basement link between the Broken Hill and Euriowie Blocks at 1000-2000 m depth.

The ability to simulate the stability of post-mining landscapes over time scales ranging from decades to millennia is a critical element in the assessment of closure designs for uranium mines. Landscape Evolution Modelling (LEM) technologies provide a means to simulate and assess the long-term geomorphic stability of a conceptual rehabilitated landform for periods of thousands of years. However, a major issue with simulations derived from long-term modelling are the limitations associated with the data inputs. Specifically, simulations which utilise historic rainfall data only represent the variability of rainfall events that have occurred over a relatively short period. Consequently, these simulations run the risk of not accounting for the full range of rainfall variability that might be expected over an extended period of up to 10 000 years. Therefore, for this study a probabilistic approach was adopted to generate a stochastic synthetic rainfall data set to produce a series of unique rainfall scenarios, each representing a simulated period of 100 years. Importantly, utilising such an approach allows uncertainty in predictions to be better accounted for and provides a range or probability of likely outcomes.In this study, the effect of ten individual rainfall scenarios are assessed in terms of their impact on the predicted erosion and denudations rates produced by the CAESAR-Lisflood LEM for a conceptual rehabilitated landform of the Ranger Uranium Mine (RUM) in the Northern Territory of Australia, focusing on the Corridor Creek catchment (Figure 1). While legislation requires this site to be erosionally stable for at least 10 000 years (Commonwealth of Australia, 1987), here the focus is on the first one hundred years of landscape evolution, as this is the period in which erosion is expected to be higher, with limited vegetation cover or pedogenic development in the initial decades after rehabilitation. Scientific knowledge of Mars’ surface morphology and internal geological structure has been accumulated through satellite imagery and numerical topographic data using remote sensing technology, as well as seismic surveys by the on-site lander. Recent studies show that Marsquakes could be caused by the release of strain energy generated by the contraction of Mars. In particular, Marsquakes occur around the graben where many faults are existed and formed regularly spaced patterns. This implies that Marsquakes occur when the stress field of the Martian crust is an extension condition, and normal faults appear on the surface. We focus on the linear relationship between the fault spacing and the thickness of the mechanical layer as an approach to studying the internal structure from satellite images. Mechanical layer is a layer that composes of the same mechanical properties and is mainly bounded by lithology (Narr, 1991; Gross, 1993). The linear relationship between the thickness of the mechanical layer and the joint spacing has been studied and its slope is called the Fracture-Spacing Index (FSI) (Narr and Suppe, 1991). Soliva, Benedicto and Maerten (2006) showed that the stress drop zone (stress shadow) due to the fault activities affects the fault spacing. Figure 1 shows the approach used to estimate the thickness of the mechanical layer from the fault spacing on Mars. This paper aims to better understand the internal mechanical structure of Mars estimated by the geometrical pattern of faults on the Martian surface. We report the initial studies of this work. The lab-scale physical experiments and numerical experiments were presented to demonstrate the relationship between the thickness of the mechanical layer and the geometric pattern of fractures

Near Kangiara in south eastern New South Wales, Australia, a number of polymetallic (copper, lead and zinc, with minor silver and gold) mineral deposits occur within a relatively broad volcanic rock belt, intercalated with limestones, sandstones and shales, of Silurian age. The Kangiara deposit was the most significant for the region.Adjacent to the Kangiara deposit, the unaltered country rocks are more rhyolitic than elsewhere in the volcanic rock belt, and the mineralization is accompanied by silicification, chloritization, sericitization and argillization. The host rocks typically contain a higher K20:Na2O ratio than the volcanic rocks not associated with mineralization.In the Kangiara deposit the mineralization consist of massive (in part banded), fragmental, disseminated and vein-type copper-lead-zinc ores, with the massive and fragmental types divisible into pyrite-rich, chalcopyrite-rich and sphalerite-galena-rich varieties. With respect to this mineralogy, the ore textures and sulphur isotope compositions the deposit can be compared to the stratiform mineralization associated with Silurian acid volcanic rocks at Woodlawn, Captains Flat and elsewhere in the Lachlan Fold Belt, as well as the Tertiary Kuroko deposits of Japan.

The Vienna Wood hydrothermal is hosted by mid-oceanic ridge type basalt in graben morphology and is located in the Central Manus Basin. The hydrothermal field is about 300 metres in diameter and consist of a sulphide mounds and tall huge death and active chimneys. From the three distinct ore types collected from the Vienna Wood site, the dominant ore minerals recognised are pyrite, wurtzite, sphalerite, chalcopyrite, Fe-oxide and gangue minerals of anhydrite, gypsum, barite and silica. The consistencies in the paragenetic sequence and in the spatial distribution of the sulfides across the three ore types suggest that similar hydrothermal process exist across active and death chimneys. Fluid inclusion studies reveal a homogenisation temperature of 190-260¦C and an average salinity of 5.1-5.4 wt per cent NaCl equiv. The pH of the hydrothermal fluid ranges from 4.2 to 6.1. Bulk chemical analyses indicate that the mineralisation in the Vienna Wood can be classified into the Zn-(Cu-Pb) type of mineralisation. The tenors of the ore and mineral assemblage resemble those of the Mid-oceanic ridge system and ancient ophiolite hosted massive sulphide deposits of Cyprus and Oman.
