Gwalia gold mine is located close to the town of Leonora in the Goldfields region of Western Australia, some 830 km from Perth. The mine is wholly owned by St Barbara Ltd, an Australian Securities Exchange listed gold producer and explorer. The Gwalia mine is a deep, all-trucking mine and is serviced by a 10 km long decline from surface. Mining is currently 1540 m below surface. Reserves extend to 1820 m below surface and are open at depth. The mine produces in excess of 200 koz of gold per annum.The Leonora area is hot and arid, with a mean annual rainfall of 230 mm and a 95 per cent mean daily maximum temperature of 20.3°C wet-bulb and 35.6°C dry-bulb.The primary ventilation system comprises a 490 kg/s surface exhaust fan, which draws air down a parallel intake system consisting of the decline, and a dedicated fresh-air intake system extending to the bottom of the production zone. Cooling is provided via a surface bulk air cooler serviced by an ammonia refrigeration plant that delivers 150 kg/s of chilled water to the bulk air cooler.The refrigeration plant and bulk air cooler were installed in 2008. The design allows cooling to be increased over time by installing an additional refrigeration plant in a lead lag configuration with the current refrigeration plant when required.Since 2008, expansion and increased depth reached a point where the underground heat load exceeded the installed capacity of the existing 4.0 megawatt rated (MWR) refrigeration plant. In order to maintain the mine design conditions underground, upgrading of the existing refrigeration system was required to bring the cooling capacity to 7.5 MWR.Two expansion options were considered: the addition of an ammonia vapour-compression refrigeration machine similar to the existing one or a lithium bromide absorption refrigeration system using waste heat from the site power station. The original design and layout of equipment on-site meant that either could be used, allowing an assessment of the merits of both when additional cooling was required.The decision was made to install a lithium bromide absorption system on the lead side of the existing ammonia refrigeration plant. The CaO-MgO-SiO2-Al2O3 system, characterised by its intricate phases and thermodynamic properties, plays a pivotal role in steel secondary refining processes, encompassing desulfurisation, non-metallic inclusion capture, and refractory protection. Accurate predictions for diverse industrial applications, including metallurgy, ceramics, and materials science, are imperative. To address this challenge, a combination of machine learning techniques will be specifically applied to model the liquid fraction of the slag and the solid fraction of MgO. The development of an artificial intelligence (AI) system, leveraging various machine learning techniques, has gained momentum in this project. The focus of this work is on constructing an AI model, based on machine learning techniques, within the CaO-MgO-SiO2-Al2O3 system, utilising simulation results from FactSage™, version 8.1 (by GTT Technologies). The primary objective is to train the AI model using these simulation outputs to predict the percentage of liquid fraction and MgO saturation based on chemical composition parameters. The AI model will undergo training with a comprehensive data set of simulations within the CaOMgO- SiO2-Al2O3 system, covering a diverse range of compositional at 1873 K. These simulations, conducted through FactSage™ 8.1 software, provide a robust foundation for AI model training, ensuring generalisability and precise predictions for the liquid fraction of the slag and the solid fraction of MgO, the solid fraction of MgO in this case is determined by the difference between the total MgO and the MgO in the liquid fraction, so it is not the objective of this study to determine which phase of MgO is in the solid state.. The predictive capabilities of this AI model hold significant implications for process optimisation, quality control, and decision-making in CaO-MgO-SiO2-Al2O3- dependent industries. Precise estimations of the liquid fraction and MgO saturation empower researchers and engineers to enhance operational efficiency and quality. This paper explores the methodologies employed for AI model creation and training, achieved results in terms of prediction accuracy, and potential applications in the field. The development of this AI system signifies a notable advancement in utilising machine learning for better comprehension and control of complex chemical systems. Furthermore, to align the study with real-world steel production, we introduce FeO and MnO at concentrations of 2 per cent and 1 per cent at 1873 K, respectively, following the validation of model results using the CaO-MgO-SiO2-Al2O3 system. This adjustment aims to bring the study closer to the observed reality in steel mills globally.

The suitability of magnetic surveys flown at low altitudes to identify buried heavy mineral (HM) strands has long been accepted. This is despite the low intensity magnetic response often obtained from such strands. The fundamentals of the magnetic survey method dictate that the closer the instrument is to the source the stronger the response. As such the optimal elevation for the magnetometer is at or near the surface. Iluka sought to use a ground based magnetometer to aid in the exploration target generation process and allow accurate targeting of exploration drill holes. Following the initial trial Iluka recognised the potential additional application of data obtained by a ground based magnetometer over known strand deposits. The detail of the ground magnetic images can confirm the assumed strand continuity between cross-sections of close spaced drilling and can aid in the definition of the geometry of different generations of mineralisation. The ability to confidently determine that the deposit has not been truncated by post emplacement erosion of the mineralised deposit may enable reductions in drilling requirements as well as assisting mine planning activities. Iluka intends to investigate advanced modelling of the magnetic data to determine the level of strand geometry and HM content resolution that can be achieved from the ground magnetic survey data and its potential application in the mining grade control process.It is anticipated that the surveying of Iluka’s known resource deposits will provide the ability to correlate the magnetic response from new exploration targets with those from known deposits for a given depth, HM grade and mineralogy suite.

The East West Link road tunnels are proposed to provide a connection between the CityLink toll road and the Eastern Freeway north of the Melbourne CBD. The alignment passes from Moonee Ponds valley beneath the Upfield Line railway cutting, Royal Park, the historic Melbourne Cemetery and beneath Alexander Parade rising to an eastern portal at Hoddle Street. The western (Royal Park) part of the alignment passes through the folded and faulted Silurian Melbourne Formation, which has been subjected to deep weathering since the Triassic.The Melbourne Formation in the Royal Park area is mainly characterised by interbedded sequences of siltstone and fine-grained sandstone. The beds are often graded and a clear boundary between the siltstone and fine-grained sandstone rock can be difficult to distinguish. Variation in lithology and the presence of structural geological features such as folds and faults have resulted in an irregular weathering profile within the Silurian rock; nonetheless the formation typically becomes less weathered with depth.Due to difficulties in obtaining reliable laboratory strength and stiffness relationships with weathering grade, in situ testing methods such as downhole shear wave velocity and high-quality pressuremeter testing are a useful aid to assessing appropriate geotechnical parameters for design.This paper presents an analysis of the variation in shear modulus of the Melbourne Formation, determined at small-strain (from downhole seismic data) and at ‘engineering scale’ strain (from pressuremeter tests) for extremely weathered (XW), highly weathered (HW) and moderately weathered (MW) rock. Estimates of small strain shear modulus (Go) obtained a range between 400 to 3400 MPa for these weathering grades. By comparison against the pressuremeter test data, reduction factors to be applied to these Go values to estimate shear moduli at engineering strain levels typically range between 0.10 and 0.35.The downhole geophysics undertaken in the Royal Park boreholes also suggests that there is an inversion in velocity between approximately 15 and 27?m depth below the top of the formation. This is thought to be related to the effects deep Plio-Pleistocene weathering, iron cementation of joints and increasing frequency of ‘non-healed’ joints in the transition from MW to slightly weathered (SW) rock.CITATION:Macklin, S, Schult, M, Terzic, Z and Chu, D, 2014. In the batch phase disengagement test, an organic and an aqueous phase are mixed together for a known period to produce a dispersion which may be either organic continuous (aqueous phase droplets) or aqueous continuous (organic phase droplets). The continuity of the dis- persion will depend upon the method of init- iating the dispersion, the conditions under which the system is operating, such as temper- ature and impeller speed, and the properties of the liquids, such as viscosity, inter- facial tension and solute content. Once the dispersion has been agitated for the required period, the agitator is turned off and the position of the coalescence interface and the sedimentation interface recorded as a function of time. This will produce a plot similar to Figure 1, where the overall dir- ection of travel of the droplets of dispersed phase is away from the sedimentation inter- face and towards the coalescence interface where the droplets coalesce with the homophase.

Detailed observations were made for two existing continuous miner and shuttlecar systems. A simple model for the shift average cycle consisted of three time components - delays, mining and transport. Cycle improvement and productivity improvement factors are derived and used to predict the theoretical improvement which the observed cycles could achieve. Various strategies of action ranging from short-term optimisation through to long-term planning for continuous haulage systems are evaluated. High potential for improvement is shown for a wide range of operating conditions. An overview is presented for systems, currently available or under active development, which can accept coal directly from continuous miners and offer continuous haulage to the surface. Systems are broadly classified as mechanical-roof mounted, mechanical-floor mounted and hydraulic transportation.

Measurable physical characteristics of placer deposits include both fluvial sedimentological features and their related heavy mineral suite. These two important identifiable factors are interrelated and generally compliment each other furnishing a complete geological geochemical tool in cost- effective placer evaluation. Heavy mineral suite composition and character will change downstream from the provenance area and will compliment the related sedimento logical environment. Careful attention to gold particle characterization during the exploration phase will indicate new source additions, enhance deposit evaluation techniques and greatly assist in maximizing metallurgical efficiencies. Recognition of the various characteristics within these fluvial systems should enhance the total contained geochemical suite evaluation considering a finite source. Failure to recognize and measure these two important features very frequently leads to frustrated and unrewarding placer evaluation objectives.

Measurements of the rate of PbO reduction from high lead metallurgical slags were made under laboratory conditions using graphite, a CO-50%CO2 gas mixture and metallic iron as reductants. The results show a transition in rate-controlling step at low PbO contents (i.e. 6 wt.% PbO). At medium to high PbO contents in the slag, the reduction rate was found to be strongly affected by the slag chemistry, temperature and reductant type. The effect of stirring and hence mass transfer in the slag phase on the reduction rate of PbO was found to be insignificant at medium-high PbO contents. Attention is drawn to the importance of chemically controlled reaction rates at the slag-gas interface. Parallels between these results and test work on a 5 tph scale have been briefly drawn.

Some attempt to minimise the importance of the greenhouse phenomenon. They do so by observing that global temperatures are still within the range of recent variations and that it is still not possible to predict with any certainty what the precise consequences of greenhouse will be. Both observations are true though the conclusion is dangerous. Ice core samples from the Antarctic and Greenland have established the composition of the atmosphere and global temperature over almost the last 200,000 years. The profile of these twin variables shows that they have moved together; when the concentration of CO2 has been up, the temperature has been up and when the former has been down the temperature has also been down. Over almost 200,000 years the CO2 content has ranged between lows of 190 ppm and highs of 270ppm. In just 200 years of industrialisation the CO2 content of the atmosphere has increased to 350 ppm, 50% higher that the mean of the last 200,000 years and 30% higher than at the start of the industrial age. Carbon dioxide is now increasing at 0.5% p.a. Methane, about twenty times more effective than CO2 as a greenhouse gas has doubled in concentration in the last two centuries and is now increasing at about 1.1% p.a. Methane, nitrous oxide, chlorofluorocarbons together with a number of lesser gases will double the greenhouse effect due to in creased CO2 over the next 40-50 years.

Northern Star’s Thunderbox Open Pit C-Zone cutback was designed to maximise extraction in a short life excavation; In fresh rock on the western wall this included 20 m to 30 m bench heights with 6.5 m to 10 m berm widths and a 90° pre-split angle. Rock mass quality in this area is generally fair to good, however, there are sections where the dominant foliation runs parallel with the designed pit wall, and more closely spaced, altered, foliation is present: these areas are difficult to predict and prone to failure. Stringent controls and monitoring were required in order to safely access below these areas, in particular the use of slope stability monitoring radar, Trigger Action Response Plans (TARPs), re-entry procedures, visual inspections, drone inspections and day-to-day personnel awareness of the hazard. Robust and comprehensively planned remediation was also required after two significant slope failure events where long reach equipment and rope access techniques were utilised to remediate the areas in question safely, but also in a timely manner, such that expected production targets were impacted as little as reasonably practicable. This combination of rigorous risk management and well planned remediation resulted in a successful and complete extraction of the C-Zone cutback with no impact to operational safety.

Open pit mining at Bingham Canyon commenced in 1904 and about two billion tonnes of ore have been extracted since then. There remain just under one billion tonnes of ore in the pit and this will be mined by 2015. Because the porphyry system extends below the ultimate pit limits, Kennecott Utah Copper Corporation initiated a study in 1997 to determine the viability of underground mining. The study was initiated at that time because the results were to be used to compare the economics of a further pit expansion to that of an underground mine. If a pit expansion was viable then overburden removal would have to start in the near future. This paper is a summary of the work that was carried out for the underground study. Block cave mining was determined to be the most appropriate method to mine the deposit. Two block cave areas have been planned with a total production rate of 72 500 tpd. Additional sources of ore will come from skarn orebodies that are associated with the porphyry deposit. The geology of the deposits is described together with the geotechnical techniques that were used to characterise the rock in the absence of more detailed data that are normally available. A general description of the mine plan is given along with the reasons for selecting the particular methodology used. The study was completed at the end of 1998 and demonstrated the viability of underground mining at Bingham Canyon. Funds have been approved for further drilling and technical studies, which will lead up to a feasibility study in 2004/5.

Mining companies and operations across the globe typically target best practice financial management, along with a focus on economically driven mine plans. Not only is this inherent in running a successful mining business, but also critical in addressing investor scrutiny. The standards for social and environmental practices is less consistent than this, with most companies adopting standards that are driven through legislative and compliance requirements of the nations in which they operate. Although there is still room for improvement, Australian is a country that stands at the forefront of social and environmental legislation, driving more sustainable planning practices for mining operations, with an ever-increasing focus on mine closure considerations. Of the many nations yet to reach such a legislative position, Kazakhstan is a place where some companies are driving towards world class standards beyond what is government mandated. Recent major urban trunk sewer infrastructure projects in Melbourne have involved construction of nearly 10 km of tunnel boring machine (TBM) driven tunnels in a range of geological conditions varying from soft alluvial soils to hard volcanic rock. To provide both construction and permanent access to the new trunk sewer network, a total of 17 shafts between 5 m and 13 m in diameter, and up to 64 m in depth have been constructed. This paper describes the design and construction of the temporary shaft support systems for the shafts.The range and variability of geological conditions at each shaft site required the adoption of the following shaft support systems across the projects – jet grouting, sheet piles, diaphragm wall, secant pile, contiguous pile, reinforced shotcrete rings and rock bolts.Groundwater control, settlement, TBM launch and reception chambers at the shaft base, chambers and TBM launches at mid-depth of shafts, connection shafts between new and existing sewers and bypass pumping shafts are among the challenges that have been met.This paper reports on the some of the challenges involved and experience gained in developing design and construction solutions for large diameter shafts that are excavated within varying geology in Melbourne over the past three years.

Water has played a key role in the Pilbara’s 60-year history of iron ore operations. In contrast to many of the current-day mining environments, iron ore mining was initially hosted by geological formations that were typically above the water table. Such mining operations required no dewatering or dewatering at rates that were less than mine and mining township requirements. The challenge for these operations was not pit dewatering but water supply for mining operations and municipal supply for nascent mining towns.The current industry sees new deposit styles being increasingly targeted, including channel iron and Marra Mamba Formation deposits. These deposits are often lower in the landscape and can require extensive dewatering. Furthermore, increased water demand for ore beneficiation has resulted in major programs of water-supply borefield development. Added to this is the emergence of magnetite projects and their significant levels of water use in ore beneficiation.The large volumes of water that are being extracted to support Pilbara iron ore mining is attracting attention. The Western Australian Department of Water has recently commissioned a study to assess the potential use of surplus mine water as a medium- to long-term supply for irrigated agriculture.This paper outlines the changing landscape of water management in Pilbara iron ore operations and explores strategies for maximising mining productivity. The heart of mine ventilation science and technology is the protection of the life and health of the miner. Lung diseases that result from overexposure to various mine aerosols can largely be prevented by maintaining concentrations below prescribed limits. Maintaining safe aerosol concentrations depends, in part, on our ability to know what mine aerosol concentrations are in a timely and accurate way. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) has been developing several new tools to help miners monitor respirable coal dust, silica and diesel particulate matter. This paper will discuss three main topics. First, the latest results of the person wearable dust monitor (PDM), developed by Rupprecht and Patashnick under CDC contract. The PDM was tested side-by-side with conventional samplers at a number of US coal mines and results indicated that the PDM was comparable to conventional samplers. Second, improvements to the dust dosimeter monitoring technique that includes a new pump with built-in pressure transducer and algorithm to convert differential pressure to dust concentration have shown good precision. Third, advances in the use of the detector tube technique to monitor tailpipe diesel emissions and ambient diesel particulate matter show that strong correlations exist between differential pressure measurement and elemental carbon in the samples.

The two key results of rock blasting are fragmentation and movement of geomaterials. Movement/flow of the blasted rock is often referred to as heave. Moving rock with explosives rather than mechanical equipment can improve mining efficiency. Such is the case with coalmine cast blasting. Controlling and directing rock movement through explosive deck delay timing can greatly improve ore recovery by segregating ore and waste. In both cases, understanding, predicting and controlling heave is an important element of successful blasting.Computer programs for predicting 2D blasting-induced heave have been used in mining for decades, helping to drive the innovation of new and more efficient mining methods, ie cast blasting. The past few years have seen the advent of 3D distinct element modelling of blast-induced heave. This is an important advancement because most blasting situations are three-dimensional in nature, especially when controlling the direction and intensity of rock movement through explosive deck delay timing.This paper documents the first full-scale blasting simulations in 3D with distinct element models that include hundreds of blastholes and in excess of a million particles, made possible with parallel processing. Surface mineral blasting is the focus of this study which treats the effect of blasthole delay timing on ore recovery. Ore waste and dilution resulting from typical row-on-row delay timing will be demonstrated. Also demonstrated will be the ore recovery possible with delay timing designs that significantly enhance ore/waste segregation. Coeur d'Alene Mines is a precious metals producer which is dedi- cated to growth through it's exploration and acquisitions efforts. We foster and support these activities by providing our staff with long-term financial support, the encouragement to proceed with their projects and ideas, and a firm belief that we will be successful. Coeur's corporate headquarters are located in beautiful, historic Coeur d'Alene, Idaho. Our main mining operations are Rochester, locate near Lovelock, Nevada, Coeur Mine,located near Wallace, Idaho, and Thunder Mountain, located in central Idaho. Our Ken- sington Gold project is located about 45 miles north of Juneau in southeast Alaska. We have exploration offices located in Reno, Nevada, and Santiago, Chile. At this time, Coeurd'Alene Mines produces precious metals from mines located in the United States. Our Rochester open-pit opera- tion, which is 100 per cent owned and operated, is located in Nevada. Presently, this operation produces 5.5 to 6 million ounces of silver per year and 60-70,000 ounces of gold. We move 65,000 to 70,000 tons of rock per day of which about 23,000 tons is ore. The ore is crushed, stacked on permanent heaps and leached. The recovery is by Merrill-Crowe. Although the average grade is rela- tively low, 1.4 ounces per ton silver and 0.012 ounces per ton Au, the operation is very low cost. Our cost of production is less than $4.00 per silver equivalent ounce. Rochester is anunusual operation in that the crushed rock stacks without much compaction and the ores are easily leached. The final height on our heaps will be about 220', and overall recovery will be about 55 per cent of the silver and about 85 per cent of the gold. Reserves at Rochester are expanding and are now adequate for at least fifteen years of opera- Tion.

Over the last five years Du Pont (Australia) Ltd has developed a commercial range of new generation emulsion based explosives concurrently with the development of new explosives-placement systems. The paper outlines Du Pont's emulsion technology and history of product development from the initial emulsions (Tovex E & EL) to emulsion/ANFO blends (Tovex BE) through to the most recent development of Du Pont's SOL emulsion component. The paper also outlines the development of materials handling systems on site to load waterproof bulk explosives from the original pumper trucks through to the multipurpose agitator bowl blending and pumping units at the heart of Du Pont's SOL emulsion system currently available within Australia. The last section deals with some of the more important features of enhanced agitator bowl truck designs and outlines examples of the complete SOL emulsion system and methods of operations currently practiced at specific mines within the Bowen Basin coalfields.

OneSteel Whyalla’s grate-kiln-cooler pelletising plant was commissioned in 1968 processing haematite feed from the local South Middleback Ranges mining area. The existence of a magnetite resource beneath the haematite ore at Iron Duke had been known for some time. In 2004, a decision was made to covert the primary iron source for the Whyalla steelworks from haematite to magnetite – known as project magnet. The intent of the project was to convert the feed to the steelworks from haematite to magnetite and to free up the remaining haematite resource for export. The pelletising plant was cut over to a magnetite feed in 2007.The thermochemical differences of magnetite compared to haematite are threefold:1. the introduction of an exothermic reaction during conversion of magnetite to haematite,2. the absence of bound water which existed within the haematite, and3. lower gangue content requiring lower fluxing levels and therefore lower calcination energy demand.The combination of these differences results in a significantly different induration requirement for magnetite as compared to haematite. The change therefore required extensive research and test work to design modifications to the furnace and to ensure appropriate risk mitigation for the Whyalla steelworks.Preliminary pot-grate test work was performed to define the pellet chemistry and confirm the suitability of the magnetite to produce pellets suitable for the OneSteel blast furnace. A heating curve was developed by use of computer-based heat and mass balance modelling. Extensive pilot scale grate-kiln-cooler test work was then performed to confirm the heating curve and to verify and fine-tune the pellet properties. Computation fluid dynamics was used to design the physical changes to the furnace required to achieve the proposed heating curve.Following installation of an additional preheat zone, including a wall and dilution air fans, into the preheating furnace, and installation of an additional wall into the cooler, the modified furnace was commissioning in December 2007. The plant performed as expected during commissioning with the actual heating curve matching the proposed curve and the produced pellets within blast furnace specifications.
