A major component of Sydney’s new South West Rail Link project is the Hume Highway Underpass (HHU), an 80 m long twin track mined tunnel excavated at a depth of just 5 m below the pavement of the Hume Highway; one of Australia’s busiest road corridors.In order to ensure a safe and efficient construction of the underpass without disruption to the Hume Highway traffic, design of the HHU required specific focus on the prediction and control of ground movements. This paper describes the design and construction solutions adopted in response to these challenging constraints. The paper also provides discussion on the observed behaviour of the underpass during construction and the results of a back analysis that was undertaken during construction.CITATION:Hill, J, Nievergelt, R and Chapman, B, 2014. Copper sulfate is traditionally used to activate various types of sulfide minerals. The list of users includes Falconbridge Sudbury operations, where copper sulfate solution is added to the pyrrhotite/pentlandite middlings at the scavenging stage. Results from some batch tests reported in the literature suggested that copper activation is helpful for the improvement of pentlandite recovery, especially in the difficult to float fine particle range. Any improvement in pentlandite recovery is important since it is the main nickel bearing sulfide mineral. The impact of copper sulfate for this function has been investigated. Since the focus of current investigation was the flotation behaviour of minerals at the scavenger stage, rougher flotation was kept as constant as possible at two different weight recoveries, namely 13.2 per cent and 15.5 per cent that is relevant to industrial practice. Samples taken during batch testing were extracted using DETA and flotation products from selected tests were analysed to determine the recovery by size behaviour in relation to the use of copper sulfate. Results provide significant evidence that the addition of copper sulfate to these middlings does not yield greater nickel recovery, either on an overall or specific particle size basis. It is concluded that copper sulfate is wasted in the process and that self activation behaviour of the ore at a slightly reduced pH is sufficiently significant to maintain the scavenger recovery of pyrrhotite and pentlandite at desirable levels. Results obtained from limited circuit trials have shown supporting evidence for this conclusion.

Mining activities can result in the transfer of harmful elements, including arsenic and lead, into the environment. In Australia, one of the potential future uses of rehabilitated mine land is to stock grazing animals. Elemental uptake is dependent on bioavailable fraction for adsorption upon exposure. Bioavailability data are generally lacking in order to provide realistic health risk assessments relating to harmful elements from mine tailings in Australian conditions. Another key component of risk assessment is the ability to estimate a realistic exposure, or dose rate, of the tailings to the grazing cattle over a set period of time. Hence, we aimed to conduct grazing trials directly on rehabilitated tailings facilities in order to provide valuable in situ information on heavy metal dose rates and associated accumulation. For the laboratory-based evaluation of comparative bioavailability, groups of cattle were fed five days a week on a normal diet spiked with mine tailings or soluble pure salts of target elements (eg sodium arsenate, sodium arsenite and lead acetate) for about eight months. For the field validation, cattle were allowed to graze directly on rehabilitated tailings facilities over a similar length of time. Blood and a biopsy of the muscle and liver were periodically collected to monitor arsenic accumulation. At necropsy, blood, muscle, liver, kidney and other saleable tissues were measured for arsenic concentrations. Although this study was focused on arsenic, lead and other metals were also measured. Predictive models for arsenic and other metals have been established to calculate the maximum grazing duration without the risk of exceeding specific food safety guidelines. The outcome of this study is a predictive model for maximum beneficial use of certain rehabilitated tailings for cattle grazing where grazing activities do not impact on the integrity of the tailings dams.CITATION:Ng, J C, Noller, B N and Bruce, S L, 2014. The purpose of this paper is to therefore investigate the hydrogeological characteristics of tailings, coarse and mixed rejects from coal processing to enable better understanding of the potential for undrained behaviours in coal mine spoil piles. This is achieved by analysing the results from permeability and oedometer testing of tailings, coarse rejects and mixtures thereof. Focus is given to the effect that tailings content has on the behaviour of mixed rejects, the transition point between drained and undrained material behaviours, and the evolution of properties with increasing stress that would occur with increased depth of burial in a mine spoil pile. The implications of the findings are discussed with respect to spoil pile stability.

Gas and coal dust, as potential harmful elements (PHEs) produced during mining, are considered two serious threats to the safe mining and the health of miners because of its explosive and pathogenic properties. To solve this problem, compound reagents enhanced water spraying technology was used to control the gas and coal dust in excavation working face in this study, and spray testing platform and wind tunnel were used to investigated the suppression effect for gas and coal dust. In addition, sink test, and agglomeration experiments were also used to analyse its suppression mechanism. Testing results show that the dust reduction efficiencies of compound reagents enhanced water spraying technology for four different particle sizes were 80 per cent, 91.43 per cent, 94.74 per cent and 94.46 per cent, and improved by 14 per cent, 10.86 per cent, 8.42 per cent and 4.25 per cent compared to water spraying. Moreover, the gas suppression efficiency also can be increased more than 20 per cent. Sink test, and agglomeration experiments results show that compound reagent improves the spreading efficiency of the liquid on the surface of the coal by changing its wettability, and this process can not only slow down the desorption rate of gas by forming a water-sealing effect in the coal surface indicated, but also promote the agglomeration of fine-grained coal dust.

Continuous, steady-state laboratory flotation tests showed that the recovery of cha1copyrite from a naturally occurring ore, under conditions closely resembling those of plant practice, could be expressed in terms of a first order rate equation.Tests on full-scale plant flotation cells, using impulse tracers, indicated ideal mixing of the pulp in the cells.It was demonstrated that values of first order flotation rate constants can onlv be obtained from conventional methods of analysis in special cases.Analysis of a plant sampling campaign by the author supported a first order kinetic equation for two mineral species, and for the individual size fractions of one of these.The effect of stage-addition of reagents is interpreted in kinetic terms.

The induration furnace for iron ore pellets was originally designed to process concentrates with high contents of magnetite. To support the use of haematite concentrates, internal fuel was added to the pellets in the form of ground coke breeze or anthracite. To ensure that the addition of coke breeze was not excessive, the ‘heat of magnetite equivalent’ or heat of magnetite equivalent (HME) relationship was developed, guaranteeing that the fi ring temperature requirements remained the same. However, this oversimplifi es the different reaction paths of magnetite and carbon in iron ore pellets. At fi ring temperatures, gas diffusion controlled reactions such as the combustion of coke, the calcination of carbonates and the reduction and oxidation of iron oxides can all occur in different parts of the pellet simultaneously. The interaction of these reactions produces a range of atmospheres across the diameter of the pellet that vary from oxidising at the pellet shell to reducing at the pellet core. Mathematical modelling and pellet fi ring experiments to preheat temperatures before quenching have shown that a higher proportion of coke relative to magnetite slows down the oxidation process, irrespective of temperature. A higher temperature, however, results in an increase in the rate of haematite reduction in the pellet core and a more reducing atmosphere, which could lead to different sintering rates in different parts of the pellet and shrinkage cracks forming. To observe these gas-solid reaction rates at a larger scale, the COREM pot grate has been updated with an additional oxygen analyser. This, along with other improvements, will allow better optimisation of straight-grate firing cycles for different pellet compositions.

The mining industry seeks to engage with and respond to stakeholders through open consultation processes during the various phases of a mining project (Department of Industry, Tourism and Resources, 2006). Two Australian Coal Association Research Program (ACARP) funded projects conducted in the Bowen Basin coalfields in Central Queensland investigated the use of a stakeholder panel for the evaluation of mine site rehabilitation. The panel members were drawn from the local and regional area, and represented neighbouring landholders, traditional owners, AgForce, local government, conservation groups and non-governmental organisations (NGOs) such as Greening Australia and the Fitzroy Basin Association. The approach of utilising stakeholders to establish rehabilitation criteria was proposed as an alternative to the established practice of assessing rehabilitated areas against a suite of quantitative completion criteria; eg >70 per cent vegetative ground cover or <5 t/ha/a soil loss. The basis of this approach recognises the reality that the definition of completion criteria has proved problematic over the last 40 years with no broad consensus reached on the suite, let alone the metrics; eg the exact cover level that will benchmark acceptance of the mine site rehabilitation.CITATION:Merritt, J L, 2016. The characterisation and assessment of waste rock has been the subject of considerable research, and many guidance documents have been published both internationally and within Australia. While these documents provide detailed information on how to characterise waste rock, there is not a great amount of detail on how to determine the optimal waste management options from an operational viewpoint. For example, typical questions that a mine operator would seek answers to include: What placement method should be used (eg end tipping versus paddock dumping)? What is an optimal tip head height for waste placement in a storage facility? How should sulfide grade control be carried out?Defining the contributing factors to waste management and waste material placement and assessing the contribution of each variable directs these assessments towards a semi-qualitative and quantitative methodology. Quantitative methodologies show an increase in the confidence of these assessments by providing logical, measureable assessments.As part of a strategic assessment for waste management at an active mine site, a detailed risk-based investigation of the influence of variables common to waste placement was completed. These variables included placement method, placement height, sulfur grade and material conditioning (eg compaction) on the associated risks of waste material storage. The assessed risks include temperature assessments (potential for thermal take-off as a result of spontaneous combustion), toxic gas production and flow and acid production potential. Applying a numerical modelling approach to the assessment of the different waste material placement strategies allows for the variation in risk to be graphically presented and communicated through risk matrices and histograms.CITATION:Pearce, S and Lehane, S, 2015. Following discovery in October 2004, commencement of development in February 2007 and first ore production in mid 2007, the Trident gold deposit, located in the Eastern Goldfields of Western Australia, has now been successfully mined for over three years. Three years of operational history has enabled the performance of the Trident underground mine to be reconciled against the mine plan and strategy proposed for the original feasibility study.The Trident deposit, initially based on two lode systems known as the Eastern Zone and Western Zone, has been continuously drilled, interpreted and re-interpreted over the period and as a result the addition of the Athena, Apollo and Artemis lode systems as well as numerous smaller scale lodes has been realised. The first three years has seen the Trident underground mine quickly move up to its 1 Mtpa design production rate. The mine plan and strategy used in the initial feasibility study and subsequently implemented, required sufficient flexibility to enable modification and optimisation to mine plans as ore zones were further defined. The ability to modify the mining plans has enabled Avoca to achieve its mining targets at Trident. With over 250 000 ounces gold produced to January 2010, the company is well positioned to achieve its ten year vision associated with the Higginsville Gold Project.This paper offers an account of operational experiences whilst providing comparison to assumptions and methodologies used in the original feasibility study. The paper is a sequel to a paper presented at the Tenth Underground Operators’ Conference held in Launceston, Tasmania titled Development Strategy of the Trident Underground Gold Mine.

CPeX is a non-ideal explosive performance prediction model. The model takes into account the rate of energy release, the extent of chemical reac- tion and the effect of confinement on energy release. The model resolves the explosive energy into `shock' and `heave' com- ponents as a function of explosive type, hole diameter and rock type. The predictions of the model are compared for a bulk emulsion, and a prill-doped bulk emulsion in soft rock. The predictions, based on calibra- tion of the model with simple unconfined detonation velocity measure- ments, show the significant effect of non-ideality on explosive Performance.

The Cadia Valley Operations currently hosts a large operational open pit, a large operational sublevel caving underground mine and two other underground projects at the study stage. This scenario creates an unusual situation for the evaluation and planning of a fifth major open pit project. The Cadia East Open Pit is a large gold-copper development located adjacent to the operational open pit and above one of the underground projects. A study team is conducting a comprehensive and robust analysis of the target orebody. Two key factors for this project include the existing and planned projects within the valley and the wide range of available mining methods. The aim for the study team is to present an optimal and practical case which suits the entire Cadia Valley Operation. A rigorous and robust analysis of the situation requires that each factor be properly evaluated. A modular system has been developed which allows the wide range of scenarios to be quickly and meaningfully considered. Sensitivities for each module drive the further development of that particular module. As each scenario progresses, an assessment is made evaluating its value, strategic value and practicality. In such a way, the number of scenarios is gradually reduced at each stage to produce a final short list of feasible cases. Each scenario on the shortlist is then assessed with regard to the existing operations and other projects. A qualitative and quantitative analysis is made. This ranking is used to provide the recommended case.

Determination of the adsorbed layer composition and structure at molecular and atomic levels and understanding adsorption mechanisms and dynamics are vitally important for the preparation of surface layers with specific functions. Direct information, at a molecular level, about mineral surface composition, its structure and surface distribution is crucial to perform an efficient separation process for mineral beneficiation. This information is equally important for modifying surface properties of industrial minerals for specific applications such as: fillers, composites, weathering resistance, etc. An understanding of the mechanisms and kinetics of the interaction of first adsorbed organic molecules with mineral surfaces is a fundamental requirement for the prediction and control of the macroscopic surface properties governing the efficiency of separation technologies or new material formulations. The developed infrared external reflection technique has a unique ability to study interface phenomena, at a molecular level, on heterogeneous substrates. The variety, precision and reliability of information about the interface phenomena delivered by this technique is superior to any other single technique. The experiments are fast and non-destructive. High sensitivity (starting from 20 per cent of the monolayer) in situ collected information in a multiphase system, even in the region of strong absorption of the substrate, makes this technique a very valuable experimental tool. The complexity of the recorded reflection spectra, their sensitivity to variations of the optical properties of all bulk and surface components and their spatial distribution in the system under investigation, are in fact the major strengths of this technique. A few examples of the application of this multi-diagnostic technique, for monitoring surface modifications of semi-soluble minerals for selective flotation, will be discussed in detail in this paper.

Titanium feedstocks are the building blocks of the titanium value chain. They can be mined directly, as is the case for ilmenite, leucoxene and rutile, or manufactured from ilmenite by extracting various quantities of non-TiO2 components from the ore by chemical and/or thermal processes.While feedstocks can be grouped into categories of materials with similar characteristics, they are essentially unique products from very different mining locations around the world. In fact, no two feedstocks are exactly the same. As such, the variations between the available feedstocks, in combination with the permutations in processing technologies to turn the feedstocks into titanium pigment or metal, mean that choices between feedstocks are specific to the location in which they are utilised.In this paper, the authors examine the key requirements of titanium feedstocks to the TiO2 pigment and metal sectors. Apart from the well known differences between feedstock choices for the sulfate and chloride process, the more opaque considerations in feedstock sourcing are examined.

The Monty Copper Gold Deposit is an ultra-high grade mine in Sandfire Resource’s Doolgunna region which was completely drilled out and developed within two years of commencing mine development. During this period, a total of 986 grade control diamond drill holes were completed, assayed, and validated, 15 levels developed, and 3136 faces mapped. The aggressive schedule meant a high flow of geological data was produced, validated, and incorporated into regular geological model updates. To process this data at a rate which allowed for timely use, more robust data processing methodologies needed to be generated. A new validation system was implemented which required two levels of validation being applied to any diamond drilling update. Step one was the validation of initial physical data including survey pick-ups and logging. This was done prior to new drill data being added to the geological model. Step two was the validation of assay data which was required prior to resource estimation. The implementation of Seequent’s Leapfrog Geo modelling software also allowed for a more seamless and efficient modelling workflow. The use of the Leapfrog Geo vein systems allowed for more rapid generation of geological models which then afforded more time for stringent assessment of the mineralisation system. An example of this was the introduction of cross-shift peer reviews in which opposing rosters of geologists would rigorously evaluate the previous rosters work prior to reporting. This additional level of validation resulted in more robust geological models and the identification of new ore trends. This presentation will detail the evolution of the Monty Geological model from a simple tabular indicated resource into a complex highly refined measured resource. Themes will include how the model was produced using workflows developed and optimised to meet key deliverables.

This paper examines the longer-term predictive capacity of the GAMSPATH computer program (developed by the Alberta Research Council) for a waste rock (sample MS) obtained from the Kaltim Prima Coal (KPC) mine, Kalimantan that contained significant framboidal pyrite. The model was refined by comparison with the net acid generation (NAG) and column leach tests to provide a basis for calibration of the model for both short term and longer-term reaction trends. The oxidation of pyrite during the kinetic NAG test using H2O2 provides oxygen directly at the mineral surface, generating a measured oxidation rate for pyrite of 1.16 + 10-6 mol m-2 s-1, whereas the oxygen diffusion limited rate in the leach column air equilibrated reaction was of the order 10-8 mol m-2 s-1 as calculated from the GAMSPATH thermodynamic database. Results indicated that the oxygen derived from hydrogen peroxide had to be included as a reactant (eg a reacting mineral) in the simulation to account for the direct availability of oxygen at the sulfide mineral surfaces. Optical investigations identified the proportion, particle size, and surface area, of framboidal and euhedral pyrite in sample MS. The reactive surface areas of the two morphologies were very different (eg ratio: 5:1). To manage these two different pyrite morphologies the GAMSPATH thermodynamic database was updated to include framboidal pyrite, with similar thermodynamic properties and oxidation rate to euhedral pyrite but with a particle size based on the size of the individual internal framboid microcrysts. This modification, with framboidal pyrite reaction based on the size of its microcrysts produced results that correlated well with the kinetic NAG and column leach test results when the measured (kinetic NAG test rate) and calculated (column test rate) pyrite oxidation rates were employed. This provided some confidence that the model could be extrapolated to indicate longer-term geochemical reaction trends.

In this paper, we introduce the term ‘LJC’ to refer to the LJC Automatic Magnetic Flotation Separator, which is an advanced technology developed by Longi Magnet, integrating various techniques such as hydro separation, magnetic flocculation, and magnetic columns. This technology combines gravity, hydro separation, and magnetic separation to achieve efficient and reliable separation processes. With its low maintenance requirements and high reliability, the LJC technology has proven to be effective in magnetite processing. The LJC technology offers two primary benefits when compared to traditional magnetic drum separators. Firstly, it can enhance the quality of the targeted or improved concentrate at a coarser product size by minimising the carryover of gangue minerals into the concentrate. Secondly, it can significantly improve the concentrate quality (eg achieving >67 per cent Fe) while maintaining similar liberation size and mass yield. In China, this technology has been widely adopted in magnetite processing, replacing traditional magnetic drum separators and fines flotation in the final stage of the process. Through collaboration with a magnetite producer in Western Australia, Longi Magnet successfully implemented the next-generation LJC Automatic Magnetic Flotation Separator to replace the original stage 3 magnetic drum separators. The application of the LJC technology resulted in an increase in product P80 from 32 μm to 43.1 μm, while maintaining a final concentrate grade of 65 per cent Fe. Additionally, the power consumption, measured in kWh per tonne of concentrate, was reduced by 10 per cent. By eliminating the bottleneck caused by the requirement of a coarser liberation size to achieve the desired concentrate grade, the plant’s throughput was increased by significantly. The LJC technology has demonstrated its ability to reduce the carbon footprint, improve concentrate grade and enhance mass recovery, offering an alternative solution for magnetite processing. The high-grade magnetite produced by the LJC technology is particularly suitable as a raw material for Directed Reduction Iron and green steel production. This paper introduces the principles of the LJC Automatic Magnetic Flotation Separator and provides details of its application in a magnetite operation in Western Australia.

Metallurgists frequently use a small number of large samples to characterise expected mill performance, with the a priori assumption that these few samples are representative of the entire deposit. Geometallurgical sampling is becoming more prevalent as a way to use many smaller samples to indicate the expected recovery as part of the Mineral Resource or Ore Reserve estimation.Recent increases in prices for iron ore, together with the potential to produce high iron and low contaminant concentrates, have resulted in a renewed interest in recovering magnetite from banded iron formation and other deposits.Geometallurgical evaluation of magnetite involves approaches to sample preparation, sample analysis and resource estimation that are different from the methods commonly used for haematite iron ore. The magnetite sampling protocol is specific to each deposit, and is typically designed around a specific metallurgical flow sheet.The sampling protocol will typically include the use of Davis Tube analysis. The Davis Tube is a bench-scale test that is used for determining the mass magnetic recovery from a small amount of sample ground to a specific size. The magnetic concentrate may then be analysed and together with the mass magnetic recovery, may be used to simulate the expected mill recovery.During resource modelling, the mass magnetic recoveries and concentrate grades may be assigned to a block model using regressions with other chemical constituents, or may be estimated directly. For estimation of the concentrate grades, a weighting can be applied to account for the different mass magnetic recoveries from each sample and the impact of these differences on the concentrate estimates.This paper presents an overview of the use of metallurgical test data in resource evaluation for magnetite deposits.

Australia as a leading producer of mineral sands has also occupied a leading position in many areas of research'in the processing and applications of these minerals. Research in upgrading ilmenite to produce synthetic rutile has resulted in the develop- ment of many processes, e.g,., Becher, Murso, Chlorine Technology, and ICI processes. Studies on the reducibility of ilmenites, aqueous leaching of reduced ilmenites, Fe-Ti-O system, leachability of natural and treated ilmenites in hydrochloric acid and selective chlorination of iron from ilmenites have been carried out in order to develop and improve the efficiency of the above processes. While research on the processing of zircon sand to produce high purity (99.99% ZrO2 zirconia powder and zirconium chemicals started only recently, research by CSIRO in the early 1970s led to the discovery of the phenomenon of transformation toughening in partially stabilized zirconia (PSZ) ceramics. Australia, with very significant resources of lanthanide-containing ores, pro- duces substantial quantities of monazite each year but research in processing and appli- cations of rare earths was neglected in recent years in this country. However, research to improve processes for the recovery of rare earths is now under way and studies on the production and testing of Nd-B-Fe magnets which are 1.5-2 times stronger than the strongest magnets (Sm-Co) currently available, have also commenced.' An overview of the research in the pro- cessing and applications of mineral sands during the last two decades in Australia and its implications for the industry are pre- sented in the paper.

BHP-Utah Coal Limited operates 33 draglines of varying sizes in the Bowen Basin of Central Queensland. The group's operations with draglines commenced in 1963 with the establishment of opencut operations at the then TPM Moura Mine and continued through expansion of that mine, the commissioning of the Utah Development Company Blackwater Mine in 1968, and the subsequent establishment of six (6) other large opencut mines, all in the general area over the next fourteen years. These operations generally commenced with boxcuts on the sub-crop at depths of 15 to 25 metres. Over the years, depths have increased so that average depths now are in the 45 to 50m range. It was soon realised that dragline operations would have to be supplemented with additional stripping equipment. In 1981, a symposium "45m and Beyond" was held in Rockhampton to assess the problems associated with such "deep" stripping. Subsequently, dragline operations have continued and although addi- tional stripping capacity has been added, in many instances, draglines have been used and are being used to dig depths greater than 45m, some- times as much as 65 to 70m.
