The underground mining industry is seeing unprecedented shortages in skilled labour. Migration to Australia being at an all-time low is a leading concern, with pandemic-induced border closures and lockdowns only exacerbating the skills shortage, not causing it. The skills shortage is forecast to peak in 2023 and remain high beyond 2025. With this skills shortage in mind, mining companies throughout Australia are trying to deal with stricter protocols around Health and Safety (H&S) legislation, as well as more stringent controls on quality assurance, particularly as underground mines are reaching greater depths and extending into ‘unchartered territory’. The cumulation of this is proving to be a major hurdle in ‘effective’ operational geotechnical management. The drive for automation in mining is bringing another level of complexity. However, ‘once automation is up and running, it presents the opportunity to access talent pools that may not normally be available. There is also a change in skillset that will be required to drive automation. ‘The top two emerging roles that will be critical for the future of the mining industry are artificial intelligence and machine learning (AI/ML) specialists, and process-automation specialists’ (Writer, 2021). If anything positive has come from the pandemic, it has shown that remote working can be effective and that the drive for automation and critical evaluation of skills required on-site should be given greater priority. UQ acknowledges that the industry is changing, and that digital technology is required to be offered in mining related disciplines. Industry and academia need to do more to promote geotechnical engineering in mining and balance the curriculum to suit the future of mining and make it more enticing. The average cost of a geotechnical failure is about $5 million in coalmines and can be into the hundreds of millions of dollars if production is affected (Cartledge Mining and Geotechnics, 2020). The cost of a good geotechnical design far outweighs the potential losses if a failure were to occur. This alludes to the growing importance of experienced geotechnical consultancies playing a pivotal role in managing mine site geotechnical hazards, while the industry is developing the next generation of geotechnical engineers.

The large, high grade 3000 and 3500 copper orebodies at Mount Isa lie greater than 1200 m below the surface, and partly beneath the silver-lead-zinc mining operations at the Isa Mine.Since discovery over 30 years ago, the primary data acquisition programs have been integrated with long-term copper production strategies. These potentially sizeable and distinctly separate accumulations of copper mineralisation are the only sources capable of supplementing a decline in output from the 1100 orebody in the 1990s. Within a decade these deeper copper orebodies will become the major source of copper ore.

Attraction, recruitment and retention of quality mining engineers is becoming increasingly difficult for many mining companies. Part of the problem is attracting young professionals, especially given the decline in graduating engineer numbers, and the other is balancing the new engineerÆs development with business needs. The evolution of the graduate program at Olympic Dam over the last five years has resulted in substantial benefits for both the engineer and the company. The program has developed to provide structured exposure to key areas of the mine enabling new engineers to step into vacated roles as the need arises. The pool of quality engineers generated by the graduate program is a buffer against high industry turnover and helps reduce future recruitment expenditure. Olympic DamÆs program goes beyond conventional recruitment of graduate engineers. Innovations designed to improve intake include the employment of graduate engineers as well as final year students, retraining of existing personnel from other backgrounds and fast track recruitment for previous vacation students. By employing a cross-section of professionals to complement the generic university graduate, the company takes full advantage of the relevant lifestyle experience belonging to the individual, which is a substantial factor in turnover. Study assistance and a salary paid for final year students and mature age students often creates a loyalty that lasts beyond graduation. Careful selection of vacation students increases the ease of recruitment at a later stage and ensures that full advantage is taken of the relationship developed previously between the company and young professional. The evolution of recruitment at Olympic Dam has seen a decline in the turnover statistics of young mining professionals.

The selection of the mode of transport for moving bulk materials is never a simple task as there are various concerns/considerations applied to the selection of the most practical and cost-effective mode of transport to be used to move bulk materials. This paper examines various alternatives for moving ore from a mine at the top of a mountain to a process plant below (some 5000 m apart and a vertical drop of 650 m). The terrain of the mountain section of the route has added its own specific requirements, resulting in the final selection of a pipe conveyor for this application. The paper further addresses the final selection of hardware used in the implementation of the solution.

The Mako domain comprises the Mako lodes at Sunrise Dam Gold Mine, Western Australia. This domain was initially bulk or æbucketÆ domained for the open pit resource in 2000, due to complexity in defining the lodes as a result of low drill density. Negative ore tonnage and positive grade and ounce reconciliations were experienced during mining of the domain in the mega-pit, though only small volumes of the domain were mined. Significant amounts of exploration and underground grade control drilling has been completed since the initial bulk domain interpretation and greater geological understanding of the mineralisation controls and geology of the lodes now exists. Mako provides approximately 50 per cent of the ore tonnes and ounces for the North Wall Cut-back, the latest open pit phase of mining at Sunrise Dam. The importance of Mako to mill supply and life-of-mine planning, as well as past reconciliation performance necessitated a reinterpretation of the domain to increase confidence for mining. Historic exploration drilling, underground grade control drilling and detailed pit-wall mapping were used to build mineralised subdomains within the confines of the original domain. These reflect more closely the spatial extents and geological controls on the mineralisation. A new resource model using the multiple indicator kriging (MIK) technique was generated using the new domains. It resulted in a decrease in tonnes and ounces but increase in grade for the sum total of the new domains compared to the old æbucketÆ domain. This is attributed to the increased selectivity and structural constraints imposed by the new domains. A retrospective comparison of the Mako grade control from the mega-pit versus the new resource model was conducted, which æreconciledÆ 103 per cent tonnes, 106 per cent grade and 110 per cent ounces. This has provided confidence that the new model is a better estimate of the lodes. Qualitatively, the new model is a better representation of the geology and extent of the mineralised structures with significant areas of change identifiable. Grade-tonnage plots comparing the 2006 and 2008 models show that most tonnes have been shed from the low-grade û subeconomic grade cut-offs. This is mostly attributable to the volume reduction of æoreÆ in the 2008 model compared to the 2006 model, where the true mineralised zones are captured by the new domains. The reinterpretation and remodelling of Mako is an example of an evolved domain model and shows that mineralised zones need to be differentiated adhering to the geology and geological controls on mineralisation, which are understood largely due to increased drilling density coupled with mapping.

The benefits of fine size separation in magnetite concentration are detailed focusing on published research from various iron ore producers. Basic principles of fine sizing and advancements in screening technology are addressed. A chronological review of research is used to show the evolution of fine sizing applications in the industry, starting with studies that demonstrated the benefit of using fine screens to produce consistent lower silica concentrates, followed by improvements in fine sizing equipment that have made effi cient screen classification in ball mill circuits practical. Case studies are used to demonstrate how positive sizing with screens can be used to significantly shift concentrate ‘grind/grade’ relationships.

Sampling drawpoints in block cave mines has been a contentious issue for many years. Doubts have been expressed as to the validity of the process used at most mines. This paper outlines the sampling practice commonly in use, discusses the resulting issues associated with reconciliation and drawpoint closure decisions. The paper also looks to the future and highlights issues for some block cave mining operations currently planned to have in the order of one thousand active drawpoints. It is likely that these operations will require a new approach to drawpoint sampling. There are several potential technologies currently available although some appear to be better suited than others to replace the current approaches. CITATION:Ross, I T, 2012. A critical component of any new tunnel design in a complex geological setting is the development of an integrated three-dimensional (3D) geology model with a full set of geotechnical properties of the rocks present. A novel means of predicting the geology based upon sparse observations of structural geology at the surface and from drill holes has been developed and used in several major tunnel studies in Europe.An example of this is the Lyons-Turin twin rail tunnel which is still in a development phase. This tunnel has been in planning and development for over 15 years already. An important aspect of this work is to characterise geological uncertainty along various possible tunnel paths as an input into early design optimisations for time, cost and risk avoidance strategies. Once the tunnel works commence and more detailed geological data is collected by daily mapping, progressive refi nement of the geological model is desirable; geological conditions still to be encountered can be more accurately predicted. Faults and their offsets, dykes, geological unconformities, folding, as well as standard sedimentary processes are all correctly modelled in the software. It is important to allow for seamless interchange of geological models at various scales with CAD workflows so that sufficient detail can be readily accessed at the required scale. Also, the proposed tunnel in its correct geometry can become a ‘section’ in its own right. Progressive detailed local geology models in the vicinity of the advancing head are created from the regional scale work by cutting and pasting a starting model, then adding all the extra detail for the required engineering geology work.For all rocks, most standard geotechnical quantities such as sonic velocities, Young’s modulus and Poisson’s ratio are handled. These and any other phenomena from borehole observations can have variograms calculated and stratigraphically constrained estimations made in a least biased geostatistical manner, in advance of the tunnel. RQD, or a prediction of rock fractures, is handled by the faulting and folding modelling facilities. This is probably the more interesting issue to pursue, as the fractal nature from small scale fractures and joints, to large-scale faults, can now be characterised more convincingly.

Advances in technology now allow geotechnical practitioners to better describe the properties and variability of a rock mass through advances in surface and underground mapping, borehole technology and geophysical imaging. Yet the way in which practitioners use this data is not being realised to its full potential and the quality and quantity of data that is collected is often superior to the conventional design approaches that are typically adopted. A discrete fracture network (DFN) approach provides the ideal basis for using this data to generate geologically-realistic rock mass models based on parameters derived from field data, which more effectively capture the variability and rock mass behaviour. However, until recently, the DFN approach has mainly been applied to cave mining and small-scale models associated with synthetic rock mass modelling or groundwater flow modelling for the nuclear waste and oil and gas industries.Ground support design for blocky rock masses in Australia is often dealt with in a rather traditional manner, adopting either an observational empirical approach through rock mass classification systems or conventional wedge stability analysis techniques. Using these methods requires several generalised assumptions about the rock mass fabric and excavation geometry. As such, the support system is often designed for a worst-case scenario based on a predetermined risk tolerance that the mine is willing to accept and a design block size that is generally determined by the proposed excavation dimension.A study by Doumis (2014) used conventional wedge stability analysis and the probabilistic key block analysis software JBlock (Esterhuizen, 1996) to estimate potential block sizes and support requirements. A DFN approach has also been adopted at Callie underground mine using FracMan™ software (Golder Associates, 2014). Hibbing Taconite is a Lake Superior-type granular magnetite taconite deposit occurring within the Biwabik Iron Formation along Minnesota’s central Mesabi Iron Range. The deposit is situated on the northern margin of the Proterozoic Animikie Basin. The deposit strikes northeast, dips gently southeast, and occupies 10 km of strike length. Mining focuses on 50 m of granular cherty and laminated slaty taconite within the Lower Cherty member.Ores generally consist of a quartz, magnetite, siderite, ankerite, minnesotaite, stilpnomelane, and haematite mineral assemblage. Processing is optimised by exploiting the physical and chemical variations that exist between three major ore types. Taconite ore averages 20 per cent magnetic iron (MagFe), 27 per cent weight recovery (WtRec) and produces a final concentrate with 4.5 per cent silica (SiO2). Since 1976, production has totalled approximately 237 million long tons (Mlt) of pellets (8 Mlt per year rated capacity).Ore processing uses a simple fl ow sheet of autogenous grinding (<0.044 mm) followed by two phases of wet magnetic separation, fi ltering, limestone/bentonite addition, balling, and firing to create pellets averaging 66 per cent total iron. A Liberation Index (LIS) is used as a primary guide for ore grading and metallurgical control. Grind requirements, magnetite liberation and silica grade are closely monitored to ensure plant optimisation and product quality.A recent program of benefi ciation of low-grade ores by in-pit crushing and dry magnetic cobbing has demonstrated that low-grade ores (<17 per cent MagFe, <25 per cent WtRec) can achieve a signifi cant metallurgical upgrade (up to 25 per cent MagFe and 40 per cent WtRec). This operation recovers 60 per cent of the total crushed volume, and has a calculated effi ciency factor (magnetic iron recovery) of 79 per cent. This paper discusses the benefi ts of this upgrading and its effects on ore blending and processing.

THE treatment by chlorination of the Mount Morgan Gold Mining Company's ores was first accomplished, early in 1886, by a works having a capacity of 25,000 tons per annum. Shortly afterwards another works was established, capable of dealing with 50,000 tons per annum. The extraction of gold was originally successful and satisfactory, but running expenses were high, averaging £2 19s. 6d. per ton of ore treated. These works were believed to be the largest chlorination plants in the world at that time. As might have been expected, the mechanical details and chemical process had not been perfected, and, moreover, both works were hurriedly built, and operating expenses were not then considered of such prime importance, as the ore at that time was of very high grade; the large quantities of low grade ore since dealt with not being then considered, since the bulk of it was not even known to be in existence. These two works consisted of rock-breakers, high speed rolls, screens, elevators, &c., for crushing; a large number of small handrabbled reverberatory furnaces for roasting; one-ton chlorination barrels and three-ton leaching vats for chlorination. The transport of ore from crusher to furnaces, from furnaces to chlorination barrels, and the emptying of leaching vats was effected entirely by hand labour. The system of chlorination was what was, known as Mears process, chloride of lime and sulphuric acid being used in the chlorination barrels, and as the time allowed...

The accurate calculation of ore reserves is one of the most important functions under- taken at a potential or operating mine. In recent years there has been a trend towards recommending more and more complex techniques for the calculation of reserves. However these are not always necessary and many improvements could be made by the use of all potential data and a heavier geological input. An ore reserve should be the result of geological not mathe- matical or engineering reasoning. All ore reserve estimates are wrong and the important thing is to.recognise why they-are wrong and to take action to minimize the errors. Geostatistics and other complex mathematical techniques may appear to answer all our needs for ore reserve accuracy but there are many drawbacks, not least of which is the communi- cation gap which may develop between the operator and both management and production Personnel.

"This paper reflects on the author’s experiences in undertaking mining studies and reviewing mining projects and technical reports, particularly over the past five years, and the impact of recent changes in reporting standards and listing requirements pertaining to mining-related evaluation and valuation exercises. It also discusses contemporary changes in the expectations of the investment community and the implications for the role of the technical specialist in providing advice to such stakeholders.Not for the first time in history, the resources industry has experienced a significant downturn after a period of strong, sustained growth in line with the traditional view of the cyclical nature of commodity markets. The resource industry is currently faced with capital austerity in the wake of projects ‘failing’ (not delivering to expectations). In response, the industry has experienced changes in investment behaviour (slowing of investment) and an increasing regulatory burden as stakeholders seek a greater understanding of mining project risks.This paper discusses this response and uses case studies to highlight the key learnings (perhaps re-learnt) by the industry. Longwall mining is a form of underground mining and the principal extraction method for underground coal mining in Australia. The method is used in the mining of both thermal and metallurgical coal. The primary market for thermal longwall mines is that of the export market where price is governed against the Newcastle Thermal Benchmark index (globalCOAL, 2016).Australia’s thermal coal export outlook is considered moderate due to slower demand from major importing countries, as well as slowing domestic production. However, ‘Australia is projected to increase its share of world thermal coal exports and become the world’s largest exporter over the medium term as lower prices, increased domestic use and infrastructure constraints limit growth from other key suppliers’ (Office of the Chief Economist (OCE), 2016, pp 25, 58). On the contrary, and as a result of current global coal price trends, the basic economic principles of underground longwall coal mining are heavily stressed. From a life-of-mine perspective, influencing return on investment is at its greatest during project evaluation and execution. The University of Wollongong was named University of the Year 2000, for its work in preparing students for the e-world. Computer facilitated learning is being introduced into subjects throughout the engineering course. First year mining engineering students are introduced to computers, e-communication, using the UniversityÆs web based information system, and web based subject delivery. Mining engineering students in the mid-years of the course use programming languages and numerical computation software such as MATLAB, while students in the final years use a range of commercially available professional engineering software such as TALPAC. Most of these subjects are offered as part of the UniversityÆs Learning Online program, co-ordinated by its Centre for Educational Development and Interactive Resources (CEDIR). Learning Online subjects are delivered using the Web Course Tools (WebCT) environment. WebCT allows all resources to be accessed through the web, allows email communication between lecturer and student, and allows discussion groups for the exchange of ideas. Students can submit their assignments through WebCT and receive immediate feedback. This paper describes how WebCT has been used to deliver a first year engineering computing subject, mid-year numerical computation subjects, a mining economics subject and mine planning subjects.

New Caledonia is a major metallogenic unit of the south-western Pacific Rim. Its mineral production is of world significance and it has an unusually well diversified mining history. New Caledonia's main metallogenetic potential is, however, associated with its unique ophiolitic complex and its important mineral- izations of nickel, chrome, cobalt and iron. Gold has been found in all the four basic tectonic elements of New Caledonia: the Central Massif, the West Coast basalts, the ophiolitic complex and the Caledonian North. Some analogies are attempted. Only the Caledonian North has supported mining operations (213 kg Au). More recently tenuous gold indications have been found within the ophiolitic complex, possibly associated with Oligocene plutonism.

Rare-earth permanent magnetic roll separators, pioneered by our group a few years ago, have distinctly different operation characteristics compared to prior art electromagnetic separators of various types. Many new applications for dry high-intensity (or better: high-force) magnetic separation have been developed in a short time period. It has also been found that the new generation of separators generally are more efficient with regards to removal of weakly magnetic contaminants in glass and ceramic raw materials with minimum loss of valuable product compared to induced magnetic roll (IMR) separators.The latest development is in the area of production of clean magnetic concentrates at high recoveries. It is likely that the PERMROLLR magnetic separator will replace cross-belt and lift-type magnetic separators as a result of this most recent advance.The paper will review the features of the PERMROLLR magnetic separator in comparison with other types of magnetic separators on the market and give examples on applications.

Safety is a key value in most leading mining companies. Despite years of effort, and significant expense in ‘programs’, operating sites seem to have been left with no real improvement in either the elimination of fatalities or sustained reduction in injuries.Safety systems and processes have grown and evolved, often to the point where they have become overly complicated and marginally useful.MMG Limited, following the consolidation of its Australian operations under a single management structure, undertook a program to effect real and sustained change in its approach to managing safety. The program aimed at improving safety by better engaging its workforce and by making safety processes simple, useful and effective. It defined the role of the supervisor in creating safe work, the role of the people doing work and the role of safe work methods.A safety diagnostic tool was developed to assess site against safety-critical mindsets, behaviours, cultures and systems. The outcome of the diagnostic is considered by the organisation to be the true lead indicator of safety performance.While still a work-in-progress, the program at the Australian Operations of MMG Limited shows that challenging common paradigms in safety management can create real change in safety performance.CITATION:Webb, M E, 2016. The Dampier Port Upgrade was completed in 2007 and is the largest project in Rio Tinto Iron Ore's expansion program. The project doubled Dampier Port's iron ore shipping capacity over a five year period. Sinclair Knight Merz (SKM) was appointed by Rio Tinto as the Engineering, Procurement and Construction Management (EPCM) contractor to manage Phase A and Phase B of the Dampier Port Upgrade. The aim of the project was to increase the Dampier Port capacity from 74 to 140 million tonnes per annum (Mt/a). This increase in shipping capacity tripled the capacity of the Parker Point facility from 34 to 94 Mt/a, whilst the East Intercourse Island facility increased from 40 to 46 Mt/a. The Dampier port remained fully operational throughout construction and achieved record yearly export tonnages over the period of the project. The $US1.4B project was completed ahead of schedule, on budget and with an outstanding safety record. Significantly the project team set an industry benchmark by achieving five million man-hours Lost Time Injury (LTI) free. The project has been recognised by the Engineers Australia 2008 Western Australian Engineering Excellence awards as category winner in resources and the overall winner in WA, and went on to win a National Engineering Excellence award. This paper provides an overview of the EPCM project management and an insight into some of the key drivers that have delivered this outstanding project.

Geothermal anomalies of different types occur within distinct geological/structural settings in Papua New Guinea. According to R.F. Herring, geothermal occurrences in Papua New Guinea can be classified into two types, those related to vulcanism (Lihir, Rabaul and other series of islands along the volcanic arc) and those resulting from a regional heat flow probably caused by radiogenic sources, for instance those in the Wau/Bulolo area. The manifestation of this potential source of energy generally coincides with either converging or diverging tectonic plate boundaries. Previous inventories on thermal waters were carried out by vulcanologists from the Rabaul Observatory in the early 1960s. However, these studies rarely included chemical analyses of water and gas emissions and the investigations were carried out in an ad hoc manner, generally as a secondary activity. The most recent investigation on thermal waters was conducted on Lihir Island in connection with the development of the open pit gold mine. These studies included detailed exploratory drilling to a maximum depth of 730 m, and a water chemistry isotopic sampling and analysis programme. The hydrothermal waters were not considered as an energy source but as a hazard during the development stage of the mine. Nevertheless, the geothermal anomaly observed at Lihir includes hot springs emerging along the coastal zones with temperatures that approach 100¦C, steam, and thermal borehole waters with temperatures that exceed 200¦C. Chemical analysis results of thermal fluids from Rabaul, Talasea and other areas in Papua New Guinea generally show high total dissolved solids and low pH. In contrast, recent results from the deepest and hottest thermal source at Lihir shows a neutral pH, a Na-CI-SO4 composition and temperatures above 200¦C. Despite the concentration of chloride being similar to that of sea water, other chemical results and stable hydrogen and oxygen isotopic compositions of thermal fluids imply the source to be mixture of local meteoric water and deep thermal water rather than sea water. Results of geothermal modelling suggests that the total geothermal uptlow is equivalent to 54 MW.
