The United States Steel Corp. in cooperation with the United States Government is conducting a large-scale methane drainage field demonstration using stimulated vertical boreholes drilled in advance of mining. A grid pattern of 23 boreholes, isolating approximately 1.5 km2 of coalbed area, has been drilled to the lower bench of the Mary Lee coalbed, Jefferson County, Alabama. Upon completion of drilling operations, various hydraulic stimulation treatments utilizing nitrogen-generated foam, water, and gelled fluid were performed to enhance the rate of methane gas removal. Production from the grid pattern began in September 1977 and continued as the last borehole was placed on production during October 1980. To date, in excess of 33,800,000 m3 of methane gas has been drained as a result of this effort. Underground mining operations were approximately 3.2 km from the grid pattern when production began and have currently progressed to within 1.6 km. Underground interception of the grid is expected in 1986.

Operational grinding mills emit significant acoustic emissions which are a consequence of the dynamic environment prevailing inside them. From a technical perspective, the noise presents an opportunity to determine some details of the processes occurring inside the mills. The noise generated is not random and can be attributed to a range of events that occur inside these mills, consequently non-contact acoustic determinations of in-mill behaviour provide powerful insights into the operation of primary comminution tumbling mills. To enable a logically coherent picture to be formed of the processes inside a mill, arrays of microphones have been used. This approach allows a clearer picture of the in-mill behaviour of the charge to be accessed. In contrast to single microphone approaches, usually located near the expected charge toe position, an array of microphones allows much more useful information to be obtained from grinding mill noise.This paper will discuss and present data obtained from microphone arrays positioned at the toe and shoulder locations of a mill, and how this information can then be used for the optimisation of grinding mills in real-time.CITATION:Pax, R A, 2012. The performance of the Australian Mining Industry over the past 10 years using key indicators of production, revenue, aftertax return investment, together with key cost elements, market changes and ore reserves is briefly reviewed. The elements of competitiveness are discussed forthe industry and the effects of Government charges and policies relating to existing operations are outlined. There is a demonstrated need for improvements in competitiveness in direct and indirect costs and for improved access to resources for the mining industry to continue to grow and add to Australia's economic growth.

In this paper, the current methods for predicting surface subsidence due to underground coal mining are evaluated first. A single index, called a strata parameter (P), is then proposed to describe the overall character of the undermined strata in the context of surface subsidence. Based on the strata parameter, a method for predicting the maximum surface subsidence for various panel width (w)/depth (h) ratios is presented, which has been tested against specific empirical curves or data from several coalfields in different countries. From the data relating to several coalfields, a linear relationship between the reported average angle of draw and the strata parameter has been established. It has also been found that the strata parameter can be used for studying the locations of the inflection points and the shapes of transverse subsidence profiles.

Measurement of the net percolation from the base of a cover system into the underlying waste material is a key component of a cover system monitoring program. The units of measure (ie a percentage of precipitation or rainfall) are simple to understand for all stakeholders, which increases the importance of obtaining representative net percolation values. In general, lysimeters are used to measure net percolation across the cover material-waste material interface; however, the design of lysimeters for cover system monitoring programs in the mining industry have typically not considered fundamental aspects of lysimeter design. Lysimeter design is typically thought of as being conceptually simple, when in reality the design, installation, and operation of lysimeters is often counter-intuitive, due to the complexities of flow through unsaturated soil systems. This paper puts forward a methodology for lysimeter design while also presenting the fundamental design variables that should be considered. Lysimeter design for differing climates, cover materials, and waste materials is discussed. Finally, the performance of lysimeter designs previously installed in the field at sites in Australia, Canada, and the United States are subjected to numerical modelling to determine whether net percolation is being measured properly.

Industry, especially extractive industry, must now give serious attention to the impact its operations have on the natural environment and on the economic, social, and cultural context within which it operates.   While this obligation is statutorily managed, there has been a recent shift towards a culture of self responsibility. Industry is now talking about earning its ôsocial licence to operateö and the importance of maintaining the ôtriple bottom lineö, thus adding environmental and social performance to the usual financial criteria used to measure organisational performance. The social context within which companies operate has also become more sensitive with industry responding to a growing public expectation that it conduct itself in a way that strives for sustainability by operating and developing in a way that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs.   There are glowing accounts of industries engaging and collaborating with the communities within which they are based. In amongst these are also some disasters which result from cultural assumptions, industry created dependencies and the failure to attain community buy-in despite significant investment by the industry involved.   There are also remarkable stories of communities, and action groups within communities, being a significant catalyst for positive change of their natural, cultural and social environment. In amongst these stories there are also accounts of long and drawn out battles; adversarial situations where no one wins; a litany of mistrust, tricks and tactics, with the better resourced party ultimately achieving its primary objectives at the cost of the other (and at the cost of any potential fruitful, mutual relationships).   So what makes the difference in achieving the positive rather than negative outcomes? The answer lies in the way the outcomes are achieved. Building relationships based on good communication, respect for divergent views, mutual understanding, and the development of trust and empathy, makes it possible to identify shared goals and objectives that best meet the needs of all parties.   Research indicates the mining industry is making good progress in developing policy and commitment to community development and engagement but that, ætranslating commitments into improved practices at the site level remains one of the industryÆs toughest challengesÆ. (Australian Government - Community Engagement and Development Handbook October 2006 @ page 49.)   This paper considers the merits of a process of community collaboration and what it has to offer in terms of meeting that challenge.

The performance of a system for detecting the onset of overloads on rod mills is described. The system has bee,, tested at CODELCO E1 Salvador Concentrator where, due t,, variations on size distribution of the copper ore feed, th' rod mill is frequently subject to overloads. The main inpur signal to the system is the rod mill sound, after being measured and analog conditioned. This signal and othe signals measuring the fresh ore feed and the mill watt addition are fed to a computer containing a simpl mathematical model. The model parameters are empiricall estimated and an analog output signal is generated, whic gives an early prediction of the overload condition. The experimental results described in this paper show that the overload condition may be predicted with an anticipation of about three minutes.

Titaniferous magnetite deposits are a significant source of vanadium for use in high strength steel alloying and other chemical applications. The mineralogy of the deposits varies markedly and the ore characteristics strongly influence the process route selected and the metallurgical outcomes. Characterisation of the ores reveals the presence of magnetite, ilmenite and other minerals such as spinel hematite and goethite with variable degrees of weathering along with weathered products of host rock. The standard processing route is to crush, grind and magnetically recover a concentrate for salt roasting to produce a soluble vanadate. Ore beneficiation is practised to generate an iron based mineral concentrate containing much of the vanadium with low silica levels of two per cent. Typical processing problems encountered are fine liberation size, over grinding of the magnetite and variable response to magnetic separation resulting from the weathering profile. Beneficiation options are restricted, and generally focused on producing a combined iron and titanium rich concentrate containing vanadium due to the fact that ilmenite and magnetite and their products of weathering are magnetic and have similar specific gravities making their separation difficult. The ilmenite usually contains low levels of vanadium making its separation highly desirable from the iron mineralisation containing higher levels of vanadium. Salt roasting of vanadium ores followed by water leaching has been the standard processing route for many years. The cost of suitable sodium salts, availability of capital and increasing energy costs and energy availability are critical factors in determining the viability of aspiring vanadium producers. To date, only Windimurra has acquired full capital funding, secured energy and sodium salt supplies at suitable cost that enable the construction of the project. Low overall recoveries of vanadium to concentrate roasting at up to 1200¦C are critical cost issues. In this paper, factors influencing the recovery of vanadium are reviewed and emerging processing trends explored. The important features of the processing of titaniferous magnetites have been condensed from the literature, published works, company websites, our own work and personal communication.

Drilling and sampling are responsible for most of the costs during mineral exploration, especially in multi-elements and polymetallic deposits, such as iron, manganese and bauxite deposits. On these deposits, often it is necessary to estimate multiple attributes at several granulometric fractions, ie distinct particle sizes. This paper investigates the effect of sampling at a close spacing grid only the head grades for the multiple chemical species in iron ore deposits. The remaining required data at the various grain sizes are sampled at a sparse grid. The derived geological model is checked for precision and accuracy comparing the output obtained against a model obtained using a complete isotopic data set including head grades and chemical analysis at each granulometric fraction analysed at all sampled positions. Among the several tested alternatives, the best procedure for dealing with the posed problem involved utilising the correlation coefficients between the grades at distinct fractions to obtain an isotopic database prior to interpolation. Cokriging was the method used, based on the intrinsic coregionalisation model. Estimates were obtained with the quality needed for the proposal of the study. Results showed that at least 50 per cent of the blocks were estimated with errors less than ten per cent relative to the grades obtained at the reference model, using only 15 per cent of the granulochemical data employed to obtain the reference model. The methodology also preserved the correlations between the attributes in their several granulometric fractions on the estimated model.

Mining education in Ballarat has a long and proud history dating back to the 1870s. Today the School of Engineering continues this tradition at the University of Ballarat. The recent review of Tertiary Minerals Education by the Minerals Council of Australia has questioned the current situation regarding Minerals tertiary education in Australia and recommendations have been made regarding the future of minerals tertiary education. This paper initially examines the original recommendations made by the Minerals Council of Australia and assesses subsequent changes made to these recommendations. Secondly the paper outlines the future shape of mining education in the light of these recommendations given that they are implemented. Finally the future delivery of mining education is discussed, particularly with respect to the impact of modern technologies.

BHP is the world's largest copper concentrate producer with production from mines at Escondida (Chile), Ok Tedi (Papua New Guinea), and Island Copper (Canada). The entire concentrate production is further processed into refined copper by third-party smelters around the world. In anticipation of an expansion in the global copper concentrate production capacity and a corresponding increase in treatment and refining charges by copper smelters, BHP has continuously evaluated various opportunities for downstream copper processing. An expansion in the Escondida mine production, combined with BHP's interest in processing some of its concentrate production on-shore in Chile, ultimately resulted in the development of the Escondida Leach Process. This process was specifically developed for higher grade concentrates, such as from Escondida. An ammoniacal lixiviant and air are used under ambient conditions to leach less than one-half of the contained copper values. After solid-liquid separation, the solution is subjected to solvent extraction regenerating the ammoniacal lixiviant and the copper loaded organic phase is stripped in spent electrolyte returned from the electrowinning plant where ultra-high quality SX-EW copper is produced. The solid leach residue can, if required, be upgraded by flotation to produce a high-grade copper concentrate with improved fuel values and a pyrite tail for disposal. After an 18-month bench and pilot plant scale program and an engineering feasibility study, Minera Escondida Limitada decided to build an 80 000 tonnes of copper per year facility near Antofagasta, Chile. The installed investment cost amounted to around $160 million. The plant went into commercial production in November 1994 and better than 99.9995 per cent Cu cathodes were produced right from the start. BHP believes that the process and the commercial plant are an excellent example of a novel approach advancing the science of copper metallurgy in harmony with present demands for environmentally sound processes and high quality products.

Hancock Prospecting Pty Ltd (HPPL) drilled two deep diamond stratigraphic holes (ECD0001 and RHD0296) within the eastern Fortescue Valley in the Pilbara of Western Australia. Located south of the Roy Hill Iron Ore project, the holes aimed to define the stratigraphy of the Marra Mamba Iron Formation (MMIF) of the Chichester Range and its south-dipping extensions below recent cover. Previous attempts to define the MMIF of the Chichester Range have resulted in differing interpretations due to the data available at the time.The unweathered MMIF beneath the Fortescue Valley in the HPPL drill holes is characterised by dolomitic carbonate interbedded with stilpnomelane-rich shales, chert and banded iron formation (BIF) with hematite staining. This intersection equates to ~75 m of carbonate-facies iron formation, as opposed to the ~230 m thick oxide-facies BIF and shale sequence encountered south of the Fortescue Valley.Various detailed geological core analyses and interpretations from ECD0001 and RHD0296 were integrated with regional diamond and reverse circulation (RC) holes from across the Fortescue Valley. Interpretation of the data indicates that the eastern Fortescue Valley MMIF represents a thinned thickness sequence of the whole formation. The MMIF of the Chichester Range and Fortescue Valley has gamma logs that correlate strongly in parts to the type section used for MMIF south of the Fortescue Valley. Therefore, the outcropping MMIF in the Chichester Range represents an eroded equivalent of the æreducedÆ thickness MMIF observed in ECD0001 and RHD0296.Data from deep diamond drill holes across the valley, from the Hamersley Basin to the Carawine Basin, were correlated. The correlation shows that the depositional site of the MMIF in the HPPL diamond drill holes is consistent with a proximal ramp setting, in which iron-rich shales wedge up-palaeoslope and shelf-derived carbonate turbidites wedge down-palaeoslope. Not only is it the occurrence of these shales that define the MMIF, but they also determine the northward potential to develop orebodies, as they are the source of iron from which iron-rich oxides and carbonates of metamorphic or diagenetic origin form.CITATION:Hurst, J, KrapeP, B and Hawke, P, 2013. The conventional CaO-SiO2-based mould fluxes are not suitable for high-Al steel casting because of the strong reaction between silica in the flux and aluminium in the steel strand. In the process of casting of high-Al steel, flux composition changes; with the decrease of the silica concentration and increase of alumina. Knowledge and understanding of the effect of the Al2O3/SiO2 ratio on flux structure and properties are useful for flux design for the high Al-steel continuous casting. This paper investigated the effect of the Al2O3/SiO2 ratio on structure, viscosity, phase composition of fluxes quenched at different temperatures and heat transfer of CaO-Al2O3-SiO2-B2O3-Na2O-Li2OMgO- F fluxes. It was found that flux melting temperature increased with the increase in Al2O3/SiO2 ratio. Viscosity of the flux melts increased significantly with the increase of the Al2O3/SiO2 ratio from 0.7 to 1.2, reaching the maximum value, and then decreased with further increase of the Al2O3/SiO2 ratio. Raman spectroscopy analysis revealed that the change of the Al2O3/SiO2 ratio led to the change of aluminate and silicate structural units. The turning point for viscosity was attributed to the change in the degree of flux polymerisation. X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis showed that increasing Al2O3/SiO2 ratio increased crystallisation tendency of the fluxes. Heat transfer measurement by infrared emitter technique (IET) revealed that increasing Al2O3/SiO2 ratio led to the decrease in heat flux which is correlated well with the increased crystallinity of the flux. The results suggested that the flux with Al2O3/SiO2 ratio 4.3 is the best candidate among the studied CaO-Al2O3-based mould fluxes for casting of high-Al steel.

Kanowna Belle Gold Mine is a deep, high-stress, sublevel open stoping mine located near Kalgoorlie. Seismic activity during the development cycle presented problems, including concerns regarding the exposure of personnel. A number of seismic management systems were developed and tested to monitor seismicity and control the risk. It was recognised that a dynamically capable reinforcement and support system was required to be installed as part of the development cycle to reduce the risk of exposure of the underground workforce to uncontrolled movement of rock. The performance of a new Garford Dynamically capable bolt was measured in tests performed by the Western Australian School of Mines (WASM) at their Kalgoorlie Dynamic Test Facility. Detailed descriptions of the facility and data processing were reported by Player, Villaescusa and Thompson (2004) and Thompson, Villaescusa and Player (2004). The development of the Garford Dynamic bolt is described and dynamic testing results are presented and evaluated. This bolt was implemented in the mining cycle following the testing program; the observed performance is described and assessed in this paper.

In June 2008, a joint airborne collection using hyperpspectral systems was tested on a single Twin Otter aircraft. This experiment was designed to incorporate two airborne hyperspectral sensors for geological and environmental projects. Mineral exploration and environmental impact statements are two areas where full spectrum hyperspectral data can document the mineralogy at the surface prior to mining operations. Many previous hyperspectral remote sensing collections were collected on a single aircraft with a single sensor. Mineral mapping using hyperspectral sensors that measure in complimentary regions of the electromagnetic spectrum is cost effective as it allows for the mapping of clays, sulfates, carbonates, feldspars, quartz, garnets and many other minerals. This report describes the experiment using the following two hyperspectral sensors: ProspecTIR, a visible near and shortwave infrared (VNIR-SWIR) sensor with 356 channels and spectral range of 0.4 to 2.5 ¦m, along with a spatially enhanced broadband array spectrograph system (SEBASS), a midwave and longwave infrared (MWIR-LWIR) sensor with 128 channels from 2.5 to 5.3 ¦m and 128 channels from 7.6 to 13.5 ¦m. SpecTIRÆs ProspecTIR system and The Aerospace CorporationÆs Spatially Enhanced Broadband Array Spectrograph System (SEBASS) are pushbroom sensors, have high signal to noise ratios, have similar swath widths and instantaneous fields of view. Examples of data collection experiment will be shown with a focus on mineral/lithologic identification and mapping along with environmental assessment in the western United States. This paper describes the laboratory study implemented to investigate the application of the subaerial technique to tailings disposal for the proposed Olympic Dam Mine. The results of the study and the resulting design parameters are presented. The subaerial technique of tailings disposal is described and the advantages of the method for disposal in arid climates highlighted.

Lake Kopiago is located some 71km northwest of Tari in the Southern Highlands Province and lies on the northern edge of the Papuan Fold Belt. The area is underlain by middle Miocene carbonate and fine grained clastic sediments intruded by late Miocene hornblende gabbros.Two mineral deposits occur to the south of Lake Kopiago. These are the Bisamu gold prospect and the Wunaki zinc-lead gossan.The Bisamu deposit consists of a calcic skarn assemblage which is geochemically anomalous in gold, silver, copper, zinc, cobalt, bismuth and tellurium. The prograde mineral assemblage includes garnet, clino-pyroxene and epidote whereas the retrograde assemblage includes epidote, quartz, actinolite and chlorite. Pyrrhotite is the dominant sulphide with minor pyrite and marcasite and trace chalcopyrite and sphalerite. Minor magnetite is also present. The Bisamu skarn shows many of the features typical of gold-skarn type mineral-isation.

The trend of global copper production has prospectively increased over time. Based on typical mined ore grades, 1 t of copper ore generates approximately 6–10 kg of copper, which requires much energy, usually in the form of metallurgical coke. Copper production using carbon as a fuel and reductant contributes up to 0.3 per cent to global greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. As a result, research into decarbonisation processes applicable to reducing low-grade copper sulfide ores, copper oxides, electronic wastes and other alternative complex Cu-rich materials has increased. Alternative fuels for reducing carbon-rich emissions in pyrometallurgical copper processing include methane, ammonia, biomass, solar and wind power, but in recent times increased focus has been on hydrogen as a potential fuel and reducing agent for materials such as oxidised copper scrap, Cu2O/CuO and Cu-rich slags/e-wastes. From a thermodynamic perspective, hydrogen exhibits a significantly more negative standard Gibbs free energy (ΔG°) than copper oxide making it a suitable reductant and the exothermic thermal effect from reaction between hydrogen and Cu2O/CuO may be used to control process parameters. These characteristics renders hydrogen an ideal gas for reducing copper oxides and copper-containing slags/e-wastes. This review article assesses previous research on utilising hydrogen for producing and refining copper from primary and secondary feed materials.

The existence of Gabal El Kahfa ring complex, located in the Eastern Desert of Egypt, has been ascertained from aeromagnetic and aeroradiometric survey data as well as by aerial photography. Two maps for -the net aerial radiometric measurements reduced to ground level and aerial magnetic data corrected for the regional normal gradient of the earth's magnetic field have been constructed. The aeroradioactivity data have been interpreted geologically and analyzed statistically to outline various radiometric units and compute their charac- teristic statistics. The ring complex showed a circular radiometric feature and yielded a radiometric mean background and a standard deviation of 6.48 and 0.89 pR/h respectively. Besides, the observations showed a normal distribution. The aeromagnetic data have been reduced to the north magnetic pole, then filtered to produce the regional-and residual-component maps. Statistical trend analysis was conducted for the tectonic linea- ments resulting from the three magnetic maps, to define the structural framework of the area under study. This statistical study proved the exis- tence of trends in the east-west, northwest-south- east, northeast-southwest and north-south directions. The ring complex is characterized by a circular magnetic feature, whose average relief is 2150 nT. It is included within a high east-west trending magnetic zone. The latter represents a deep-seated uplift or anticline which is bordered from all sides by some faults of different trends.

Gold at Renco occurs in association with pyrite, pyrrhotite, chalcopyrite and quartz and is confined to a series of brittle fractures and fault breccias (reefs) preferentially developed within an anastomosing ductile shear zone. During late Archaean crustal movements both the orebody and the enclosing host rocks were deformed within a series of east-north-east striking, southerly dipping, shear zones. The reefs within these shear zones are now texturally different to those away from the shear zones, and this difference is reflected by differences in the way the gold is distributed in the two reef types. These differences are not taken irto account by the software package currently being used to generate kriged plans of gold grade and reef thickness and this may explain some of the inaccuracies found in these plans.
