The Lanfranchi Nickel mine is located approximately 48 km south of Kambalda in Western Australia. Mining first commenced in the mid-1970s under the previous owner, Western Mining Corporation Ltd. After two years on care and maintenance, Panoramic Resources (previously known as Sally Malay Mining Ltd) purchased the operation in November 2004. The site currently produces approximately 10?000 tonnes of nickel metal annually from approximately 430?000 tonnes of ore. The Ore is mined from four main orebodies; Deacon, Helmut South, Lanfranchi and Schmitz. The Helmut South orebody is situated approximately 790 m below surface and extends to a resource depth of 940 m. Horizontal thickness of the orebody ranges from 10 m to 45 m in width, with the average being 30 m. Previous mining at the Lanfranchi operations specifically the Helmut orebody, had a history of seismic activity. When Panoramic Resources acquired the operation it was decided that seismicity was going to be an issue and therefore a mining method needed to be selected that could effectively manage this potential risk. The dip of the orebody is quite shallow at 45º, with a 30º plunge to the south . The hanging-wall comprises of very weak ultramafics. Due to these factors the orebody posed several mining challenges. To safely and effectively mine the Helmut South orebody in the Lanfranchi Nickel mine, underhand cut and fill mining was selected as the most appropriate mining method. Paste fill comprising of cemented gold tailings was the backfill of choice. This paper is intended to convey some of the key learnings from the use of a mining method that has not been commonly practiced in Australia.

The unpredictability of the location, grade and width of narrow-vein deposits presents difficulties for mine geologists and engineers attempting to estimate, schedule, forecast and mine their deposit profitably. This unpredictability stems not only from the grade distribution within a vein, but also the irregularity of vein geometry in three-dimensional (3D) space. Traditional deterministic methods of modelling vein geometry do not account for the inherent variability of the veins, resulting in significant errors when using limited drill hole information. This paper presents a probabilistic method of modelling narrow-vein deposits using sequential gaussian simulation (SGS), which can quantify this variability and improve production forecasts. Vein geometry, thickness and grade are simulated to provide a number of different equi-probable realisations that each honour the drill hole and face sample input statistics. An example is presented from the Augusta narrow-vein Au-Sb mine in central Victoria, where the simulation results are validated against the input data and survey pick-ups of the veins along ore drives.

Dense medium separation (DMS) is one of several preconcentration methods used for early waste rejection from run-of-mine ores at relatively coarse particle sizes prior to additional milling and beneficiation. DMS has been used extensively in the coal, diamonds, mineral sands, base metals and iron ore industries to produce either a final product or as a preconcentration step. Laboratory scale and pilot test work at the Met-Solve laboratory in Canada has demonstrated successful separation and upgrading of other minerals such as lead, zinc, copper and lithium based ores using DMS.This paper reviews historical dense media systems, results from the pilot-scale multi-stage DMS Separator “Condor” system, as well as production plants and associated laboratory heavy liquid separation (HLS) test work on various minerals. The mineral systems tested included a lithium bearing ore and a fluorspar ore. Other minerals were tested but are not reported in this paper.Pilot plant test work on a fluorspar ore showed that 41.6% of the mass could be rejected to the tailings stream while 95.3% of the CaF2 was recoverable to the product stream. On a spodumene sample that was tested, it was possible to reject 55% of the mass to tailings while recovering over 90% of the lithium.In recent market conditions and with the decreasing grades in existing ores, preconcentration should be a consideration to maximise the value of certain operations.CITATION:Lundt, M and Grewal, I, 2017. Bulk explosive technology for underground mining has not seen any significant technological advances since the widespread transition from ammonium nitrate fuel oil (ANFO) to ammonium nitrate emulsions (ANE) commencing in the 1980s. The in-hole energy profile that conventional ANE systems deliver is limited by the physics of chemical gassing and simple control systems. This compromises the range, precision, and accuracy of energy delivery into the blasthole, and in some cases limits the length of charge that can be delivered. Orica’s 4D™ bulk system removes many of these constraints, enabling better blasting performance across all underground mining methods. This paper reviews work completed at three mining operations across Australia, the United States, and Chile with a focus on how this system can improve mining operations and deliver sustained commercial and productivity benefits into the future. These benefits include improved ore recovery, reduced dilution from waste rock, and reduced overall explosives consumption. This paper also reviews how this new technology can be applied for planning future mining operations.

Kaolinite is of very fine particle size in nature and thus its dispersion plays a key role in the successful removal of kaolinite in iron ore flotation and selective flocculation processes. As the most widely used dispersant in the world, sodium silicate has been used as a standard dispersant for kaolinite in the iron ore industry. However, the actual effect of sodium silicate on the colloid stability of kaolinite particles and its dispersion mechanism remain unknown in the literature. In this work, the dispersion effect and dispersion mechanisms of some common inorganic and organic dispersants, including sodium silicate, polyphosphate and a low molecular weight polyacrylic acid, on kaolinite particles were systematically investigated through electrophoretic mobility and colloidal stability studies over a wide pH range. It was found that sodium silicate-kaolinite interactions only take place in the neutral and acidic pH range, while polyacrylic acid and polyphosphate interact with kaolinite from pH 3 to 10.5. Consequently, sodium silicate only disperses kaolinite at neutral and acidic pH. In contrast, polyacrylic acid and polyphosphate disperse kaolinite from pH 3 to 10.5, with strong dispersion effect observed at neutral and acidic pH. In the iron ore industry, selective fl occulation and reverse cationic fl otation, the most widely used flotation route, are both conducted at pH 10 to 10.5. The results of the present study show that, at such high pH, polyacrylic acid and polyphosphate are more effective dispersants of kaolinite, in comparison with sodium silicate.

There are still vast areas of Australia in which either the hydrocarbon potential has already been indicated but from which no hydrocarbons have been produced or else are completely untested. Despite the lack of recent new oil discoveries, it is anticipated that initial gas discoveries in these areas will be followed by oil discoveries as has happened historically. General exploration activities are continually providing new information that is being input to update previous hydrocarbon assessments for Australia, and all indications are that future exploration efforts will discover a lot of gas, some small oil pools and there is a chance to prove a major new oil province. Because of this, it is anticipated that reserves growth will continue at the average historical rate of about 200 MMB/year until the year 2000. The most frequent scenario will be costly exploration resulting in small oil discoveries and high development costs. This, in the past, has resulted in low profitability for Australian oil exploration, but windfalls for the Australian government.

Rapid access longwall mining' or 'longwail punch mining' is a proposed extraction method whereby longwall gate roads are driven into a seam directly from an opencut highwall. The longwall panel thus formed is retreated back to within 40 m of the highwall providing an extremely simple, reliable and therefore highly productive longwall mining system. The concept is of particular benefit for the recovery of isolated pockets of coal (adjacent to a highwall) not easily accessible from a conventional underground mine. As panel gate roads are driven directly from the open strip, minimal delays are incurred between the end of open cut and start of underground production, allowing the method to bridge the gap between open cut mining and a total underground commitment. The study was specific to the Bowen Basin, and given the likely conditions, no significant operational or geotechnical hinderances to the concept could be identified. It was therefore concluded that longwall punch mining would not expose the operator to any additional risks above that normally associated with the introduction of longwall mining. Thus, longwall punch mining is an attractive option, both operationally and financially, for open cut mines reaching their maximum economic Death.

The method for design of primary roof support for the large todoidal cavern constructed to house the Sydney Opera House parking station is presented. The cavern was constructed with 5 m of rock cover beneath Sydney's Royal Botanic Gardens. Design of rock reinfonnent using a combination of fully grouted rock dowels and Macalloy bars was based on control of horizontal shear movement along bedding features in the roof. A combination of linear arch type analyses and non-linear jointed finite element analyses were used in the design study together with an analysis of the shear resistance offered by fully grouted bolts under shear deformation.

THE alkaline method for the estimation of zinc cannot, in the writer's opinion, be relied. upon to within very narrow limits between two assayers on unknown quantities of zinc. The end point is not decisive enough, and allows the personal factor toenter largely into the assay. The following investigation was undertaken to see how accurate the acid method is on Broken Hill concentrates and ores, and what should be the limit between the results of two assayers. The method adopted is as follows:Weigh sufficient amount of ore to give titration (between 20 and 50 cc.), place in tall 400 cc. beaker, cover, add 7 cc. nitric acid and heat till brown fumes cease to be evolved. Wash dock glass into assay, add potassium chlorate, evaporate to dryness on a slow fire with the beaker uncovered. When no smell of chlorine or nitric acid is observed, remove and cool. Add 100 cc. boiling water, then 7 grm. ammonium chloride, W cc. ammonia (.880 sp. gr.), boil for five minutes, filter, wash...

Discovered in 1954 and mined since 1966, the X41 copper orebodies have produced over 143 Mt @ 3.3 per cent copper. By June 2002 the production from these orebodies had depleted the Mineral Resource to 36.6 Mt @ 2.8 per cent Cu (including 31.5 Mt @ 2.5 per cent Cu combined 2002 Ore Reserve). Mine production will ramp down to cessation beyond ten years. The 2002 Copper Business Study was commissioned to review the status of the Mount Isa copper business and to optimise the long-term strategy of the operations. The study resulted in a vastly improved geological and geostatistical model, and financial studies led to the optimisation of mine cut-off grades. Utilising these new models, a near-mine target generation workshop was conducted by the copper stream geology team. The workshop focussed on exploration for new ore sources and the extension of existing orebodies to supplement the Mineral Resource inventory for future conversion to Ore Reserves. Several prospective targets were identified and the Conceptual Northern 1100 Drilling program was subsequently designed. This paper shall discuss the practicalities of near-mine target generation in Mount Isa, the issues faced when locating and preparing drill sites in a mature mine environment, and the preliminary results of the drilling program so far.

Surface oxidation of sulfide minerals, such as that found in the regions of a sulfide ore body near the water table, can have a significant impact upon flotation. This theme has been explored for Merensky ore type sulfides where an ore containing pyrrhotite, pentlandite and chalcopyrite was thermally oxidised and the role of potential remedies investigated. Back-scattered scanning electron microscope images are presented showing the oxidation layer which formed in the mineral surfaces. These oxidation layers were depleted in both sulfur and iron with incorporated oxygen. Flotation recovery rapidly decreased with increasing oxidation, particularly after 27 days and reached a plateau after 50 days. Up to 27 days, this effect could be partially overcome with higher collector additions. Oxidation had more impact upon the finer size fractions, particularly for pyrrhotite. For more heavily surface oxidised samples, ultrasonic treatment prior to collector conditioning was found to improve flotation recoveries. This treatment had the greatest effect upon chalcopyrite particles. Sulfidisation was successful in restoring the flotation recovery of the heavily oxidised sulfide minerals. Longer sulfidisation conditioning times were not conducive to good flotation recoveries of both oxidised pyrrhotite and pentlandite due to oxidation of the freshly formed sulfide surfaces. For maximum flotation recoveries of oxidised pyrrhotite, pentlandite and chalcopyrite, different sulfidisation conditions are indicated. It appears likely that in a mineral processing operation treating oxidised Merensky type ores, two stages of sulfidisation employing different conditions would be required.

In the past decade mineral deposit models have become an important tool for the exploration geoscientist. By combining genetic theories on the formation of particular deposit styles, with geological, geochemical and geophysical criteria relevant to ore location, it has been possible to more effectively focus exploration effort to the regions and local targets which have the best chance of success. However, such models have their limitations, and must be carefully and critically applied and continually updated as new technical and research information becomes available.

"Phytostabilisation with tolerant plant species has been advocated as a cost-effective solution for sustainable cover of tailings from metal mines and bauxite refinery. The development of sustainable plant ecosystems on such wastes requires not only tolerant plant species compatible with local climatic conditions, but also the formation of stable and functional root zones through systematic processes to develop functional soil matrix and horizons (eg A-B-C). However, the process requirements for reconstructing functional root zones in tailings are poorly understood. Based on a review of current literature and industry experience in tailings revegetation, the present paper conceptualises three key phases in the process of root zone development in amended tailings: hydro-geochemical stabilisation resulting from the interactions among tailings characteristics, amendment measures and local climatic conditions the rehabilitation of soil biological capacity the establishment of ecological (carbon and nutrient) linkages between the rehabilitated root zones and the above ground plant communities.Key research is required on: the relationship between hydro-geochemical stability and mineralogy and geochemistry of tailings, in response to rehabilitation treatments under local climatic conditions the relationship between soil biological capacity and hydro-geochemical stability in the root zone the transition of soil microbial communities specific to exogenous organic matters into those required for mineralising litters of in situ plant communities.CITATION:Huang, L, Baumgartl, T, Edraki, M and Mulligan, D R, 2012. Adularia-sericite epithermal ore deposits have well-documented alteration mineral zonation patterns with distinctive geochemical signatures. Proper use of whole-rock geochemistry can provide useful vectors for exploration and can enhance efforts to characterise and quantify the mineralogy and intensity of hydrothermal alteration.   Analyses of Au and Ag provide the most direct vectors to orebodies, and pathfinder elements such as As, Sb, Hg, Zn, Pb and Se are similarly zoned around at least some orebodies. However, the minerals that contain these elements occur almost exclusively in veins, and therefore identifying geochemical vectors related to wallrock alteration that is zoned outward from orebodies is crucial for effective exploration.   Distal alteration zones contain quartz-illite-chlorite-carbonate-pyrite, whereas samples proximal to veins contain quartz-adularia-pyrite, with lesser though variable illite-chlorite-carbonate. Therefore, adularia-sericite epithermal ore deposits show K alteration in their cores. The resulting K-metasomatism can be evaluated in several ways. Areas that have been most intensely altered are commonly characterised by highest K contents, but these results can be complicated by variations in rock type across the prospective area. Potassium mass balance results provide a robust and rigorous assessment of K-metasomatism, however, knowledge about the composition of fresh rocks and correct identification of fresh precursor compositions of altered rocks are required. Three alteration indices provide effective evaluation of K-metasomatism: 1.   the K number, which is the ratio K/(2Ca+K+Na) (molar); 2.   Barrie values [(K2O * 100) / Sr]; and 3.   the Rb/Sr ratio. In most places these provide similar vectors, although K numbers can be complicated by the appearance of hydrothermal calcite and/or albite.   Plots of K/Al vs (2 Ca + K + Na)/Al (molar) allow estimation of the intensity of K-metasomatism and its mineralogical products, thereby complementing traditional XRD and petrographic studies of alteration minerals.

The Air-Sparged Hydrocyclone (ASH) has been developed for the fast and efficient flotation of fine mineral particles in a centrifugal field during the past decade at the University of Utah. Over the years, the air-sparged hydrocyclone unit has shown promising potential for the flotation of copper porphyry ore, low-grade placer gold and auriferous pyrite ores, various industrial minerals, and fine coal cleaning. Many fundamental studies including the X-ray computed tomography (CT) analysis have been carried out in order to understand the multiphase fluid flow phenomena associated with ASH flotation. With data available from these studies, it is now possible to construct more accurate ASH flotation models for different applications in order to analyse the behaviour of the system and to optimise design and operating variables. The ASH flotation model developed in this paper is based on the data given in `Air-Sparged Hydrocyclone/Advanced Froth Flotation Fine Coal Cleaning', Final Report, DOE Contract No DE-AC-88PC88853, submitted by Pennsylvania Electric Company (PENELEC), December 1989. Data from several hundred experiments with the two-inch ASH-2C air-sparged hydrocyclone (capacity 0.1 - 0.3 tph dry coal) are available from the report and have been used for this analysis. In the past, a preliminary model based on limited data had been developed. The current study, however, emphasises the global behaviour of the ASH system by utilising almost all the data from the report for the purpose of scale-up and industrial application. There are two parts in the current modeling and analysis effort for ASH flotation of fine coal. The first part is the modeling/analysis of dimensionless ratio of overflow opening area to underflow opening area, A*, and the dimensionless ratio of air flowrate to slurry flowrate, Q . The second part involves the modelling/analysis of all other variables in the system and an expert system for operation and control is introduced.

The first target of mining activities on the surface of the moon is to find and extract water from the icy regolith on the moon. A test drilling unit was designed and fabricated under a NASA Early Stage Innovation (ESI) grant. A high-frequency data acquisition system was used to record drilling responses at 1000 Hz. Parameters like weight on bit (WOB), torque, rev/min, rate of penetration (ROP), mechanical specific energy (MSE), field penetration index (FPI), and the uniaxial compressive strength (UCS) were recorded for 40 boreholes in the analog samples made of regolith simulant and specialised cement. Development of the AI system and machine learning (ML) algorithms for analysis of data to evaluate strength and hence water content of icy regolith required a large data set. In this case, the data set comprising of more than one billion data points recorded while drilling into various analogue samples and cryogenic lunar formations to optimise power consumption and make bit wear adjustment during drilling operations. The tests were also repeated in the samples of icy regolith at various water content at -190C to verify the ability of the algorithms to analyse the data and to estimate the strength of the frozen formation and hence water content. The paper will discuss the objectives and methodologies used in the project and reviews the testing program and the machine learning (ML) algorithms ability to identify various formations along the exploration boreholes.

The SAG mill at Rasp Mine has undergone a number of liner design modifications since commissioning in 2012, making liner wear and failure difficult to predict from historical data. During 2017, several instances of liner failure or near failure were experienced resulting in unplanned downtime for emergency relines or to patch liners in the lead up to a planned shutdown. The strategy for relining mills is often to minimise the frequency of relines (and subsequent shutdown costs) by extending liner life, achieved through design modifications. However, it was observed that as the Rasp SAG mill liners wear, mill performance declined with power draw increasing and throughput declining. Opportunity and inefficiency costs start to erode the revenue per additional tonne milled for a given set of liners, and in turn the benefit of delaying relines. As such, optimising the frequency of relines becomes a trade-off between reline costs and opportunity/inefficiency costs in delaying relines. The aim of this paper is to demonstrate a frame work for analysing costs using a marginal economic analysis with the assumption that the Law of Diminishing Returns can be applied to the life of mill liners. The SAG mill operating variables can be modelled to determine their impact on costs and an optimal reline point can be defined where the total costs are minimised. This prevents unexpected failures due to accelerated wear by providing justification to reline earlier and thereby allowing efforts to be focused on sustaining milling performance.CITATION:Standen, C M, 2018. Limitations of current touch-up solders for galvanised steel include coating thickness control problems and poor corrosion and abrasion resistance as well as health and environmental concerns due to toxic constituents such as lead. This paper reports on progress in ILZRO-sponsored research to develop an improved touch-up solder. Encouraging results were achieved in torch soldering trials with experimental zinc-tin-based alloys. Mouldability and coating thickness control were achieved over a practical working temperature range in which the solders consisted of a viscous mixture of solid primary zinc phase particles in a liquid zinc-tin eutectic matrix. The mouldability was dependent on the microstructure of the solder sticks, and optimum structures could be obtained through control of casting solidification rates and by the addition of small amounts of copper. Hardness, abrasion resistance, adhesion and corrosion tests on experimental Zn- (40 - 50 per cent) Sn-I per cent Cu also showed improved performance over lead-tin-zinc solders and compared the effects of tin content within this range. Atmospheric corrosion testing and optimisation of alloy composition and methods of solder stick production are continuing.

The history of potential large scale development at Stawell in northwestern Victoria dates back to 1914, when Great Boulder Mines Limited, of Kalgoorlie, Western Australia, took up options on some of the major mines in the Stawell Goldfield. Despite this and other attempts by various groups over the next thirty years, mining activity on the field gradually dwindled to the retreatment of old mill tailings.A static price for gold and indifferent drilling results prevented a major effort towards reopening the field until the late 1970's. A renewed exploration effort led to the discovery of sufficient reserves to justify installation of a carbon-in-leach gold treatment plant.
