A novel open stope design approach is presented that delivered improved performance in a mining area with poor ground conditions at the Olympic Dam mine. During 2019, a large open stope had an unplanned caving event resulting in the inability to extract the planned tonnes and subsequent sterilisation of nearby stopes. A design limitation was the lack of data and understanding around the alteration domain extents, the rock mass strength controls and limits, the failure modes controlling stope stability in the local area, and the use of conventional stope shapes. From the available data and failure observations, it was inferred that the dominant caving failure mode resulted from a blocky rock mass impacted by structure and alteration causing an unravelling failure mechanism. Numerical and empirical analyses were conducted to test this hypothesis and establish strength limits for design. The strength limits for the design were then used to provide a range of outcomes from which future stope design shapes such as chamfered backs could be selected. Three alternate chamfered geometries were selected to trial the innovative designs. To date, the scheduling and access design of an underground mine have only been considered as two separate optimisation problems. First, access to the mine is designed and then the scheduling is completed. One drawback of this approach is that the costs of access construction fail to be reflected in the net present value (NPV) calculation. In this paper, designing the access and scheduling its construction are formulated as a single optimisation problem.The underground mine access construction process can be classified according to the number of faces being developed concurrently. An underground mine with a single decline branching at a junction point into two declines is considered. After construction reaches the junction, the two faces of the decline can be constructed sequentially or concurrently.This paper proposes an efficient algorithm for optimally locating a junction point to maximise the NPV where two faces are being developed concurrently. The NPV is defined by taking the locations of orebodies and their values, decline construction costs, decline development rate and discount rate into account. The variation of the NPV and the optimal locations of the junction point for one and two concurrent development faces for a range of discount rates are discussed and compared. The kinetics of cementation of silver chloro-complexes from sodium chloride solutions onto copper and zinc was studied using rotating disc electrode system. The activation energies were found to be 10.8 and 30.5 k7/mole, in a 3M NaCl solution on copper and zinc discs, respectively. Higher dissolution factors were obtained on zinc disc, due to hydrogen evolution, whereas, copper dissolved close to the predicted values. Scanning electron microscope studies were conducted both on copper and zinc- cdiscs-to evaluate the deposit morphology and its effect on reaction kinetics. Two stage deposit growth was observed both on copper and zinc discs. Smooth, coherent initial deposit followed by tree-like secondary dendrites formed on copper, whereas, scattered bulbous initial deposit followed by porous dendrites was typical on zinc disc.

Dartbrook mine is a new greenfields thermal coal longwall mine located n the Upper Hunter Valley ten kilometres north of Muswellbrook Figure 1). Construction began in April 1993 with coal extraction starting n October 1994. Longwall production is scheduled to commence in the first quarter of 1996 with production expected to exceed 3.5 million onnes per annum. The permanent workforce will number 150 full-time ,mployees and productivity rates will be 22 000 per employee per annum m a ROM basis. Being a greenfield site Dartbrook has had the opportunity to develop and operate the mine using the best practices and latest technology available to meet high standards of safety, quality and production.

The cover (cap) over the tailings pit at Nabarlek uranium mine must be structurally stable as it will act as a barrier to radon gas emission and have to contain other long-lived radionuclides. Structural stability is primarily an issue of erosional stability in the context of a design life of thousands of years. The primary agent of erosion is fluvial, dominated by rainwash, overland flow, filling and gullying in the local area. Other agents of erosion are of less concern although biogenic agents of erosion (eg termites and windthrow) may enhance fluvial activity. Several methods may be used to assess erosional stability. They fall into two main categories, namely erosion modelling and geomorphic modelling. The former is illustrated by the Universal Soil Loss Equation in which parameters describing aspects of the geotechnical and hydrological properties of the rehabilitated surface are used as input for the modelling of erosion rates. The latter is illustrated by estimates of gully and valley erosion using empirical models. Estimates of the erosion rates and stability of the Nabarlek cover are presented. The two main techniques are complementary and it is argued that rehabilitation design must make use of both approaches when estimating erosion and geomorphic stability. More recent developments in geomorphic modelling using numerical techniques incorporate both approaches.

Transporting coal by means of conveyor belts is very common in Australian underground coal mines. Major conveyor belt-related mining incidents are now relatively infrequent as a result of recent improvements in engineering standards and use of fire-resistance materials. However, conveyor belts have the potential for incidents capable of causing either personal or structural damage. In addition, any unexpected break down of rolling components or failure of belts creates a significant interruption to the production that is a major concern for operators whose responsibility is to achieve the optimum mining production.Currently, underground coal conveyor belts are examined for the presence of any overheating, smouldering or unsafe conditions likely to cause a fire. Periodic inspection of operating conveyor belts is carried out with the aim of detecting any local heat sources in an early stage. This includes temperature measurements of the driving head, idlers and rollers using hand-held temperature sensors such as infrared cameras or laser temperature sensors. The disadvantages of current conveyor belt temperature monitoring systems include high labour and equipment costs, safety risk to personnel who are in close proximity to moving conveyors, the ability to take line of site measurements only and potential for missed overheated idlers. Some of the conveyor idlers in underground coal operations cannot be accessed for traditional temperature measurements. This introduces a significant risk to the operation of critical infrastructure.A distributed temperature sensing (DTS) system can be used to develop an advanced conveyor belt temperature monitoring system that provides real-time, accurate and continuous temperature measurements along a conveyor belt particularly at the rolling components. The DTS system comprises of fibre optic detection cable, DTS controller and interfacing module. The advantages of the system include the accuracy, low-cost, easy installation, robustness, safety, immunity to radio frequency and electromagnetic interference, real-time data collection, and secure data transmission. This paper presents a scoping study on the development and utilisation of a fibre optic-based DTS system for underground coal conveyor belts. The mechanism of heat generation, the operation temperature range and the installation issues of fibre optic cable along the conveyor belt particularly in close proximity to each end of the spindle on every idler will be discussed.CITATION:Aminossadati, S M and Yang, B, 2013. Many ore deposits have considerable vertical extent which is not always known at the time of commencement of mining. In many of these cases, initial mining is by opencast methods, and as ore reserves are proved to greater depths, the pits are often planned to go deeper than had been originally envisaged. In such cases, surface plants and critical underground facilities such as conveyer tunnels, access ramps, ore passes, hoisting shafts and ventilation shafts are often located much closer to the pit rim and the orebody than is desirable for the deeper mining situation. This usually raises the question of the stability of such underground excavations, which may be critical for the viable longer-term mass underground operation of the mine. In this paper the key considerations in the evaluation of the stability of the overall mining environment for ædeepened minesÆ are defined. Aspects which are dealt with are: open pit stability, shaft stability, dilution, mudrushes and airblasts, and selection of mining method. The necessary stability evaluations are put into the appropriate context by considering two case histories. Critical parameters and considerations which need to be addressed during the evaluation of excavation interaction are also discussed.

The iron industry produces a considerable amount of tailings per annum, due to its substantial volumes of production. The actual iron ore processing routes require the removal of slimes fractions. In addition to iron oxides and quartz, the iron ore slimes are generally composed of other minerals such as kaolinite and finely dispersed iron hydroxides which impact significantly the performance of reverse cationic flotation. In this study, we propose a two stage processing route that would allow further beneficiation of iron slimes which are not successfully beneficiated, avoiding their disposal as waste. The new amidoamine reagent was tested as a collector in a two-stage route to process two samples of iron ore slimes with d50 close to 10 μm and with high kaolinite content (13 to 20 per cent). The results showed that it was possible to obtain iron concentrate with 66.5 per cent iron and 48.4 per cent mass recovery for a feed containing 48.9 per cent Fe associated with hematite (39 per cent) and goethite (32 per cent). The collector efficiency was improved by mixing with frother for the slimes with higher goethite content of 55 per cent: the concentrate grade was increased from 58.8 per cent to 64.5 per cent with addition of the frother at the expense of reducing operation metallurgical recovery from 87.8 per cent to 75.6 per cent. The efficiency of the process was improved by applying an external energy impact to disperse the fine particles and clean the surface of the minerals. The new amidoamine collector does not require a depressor such as corn starch and may provide the development of new concentration routes for complex ultrafine iron ores. The combination of the amidoamine-based flotation at first stage with high intensity magnetic separation allowed development of optimised two-stage processing routes to valorise the iron ore slimes rejected to the tailings in the actual flotation plant.

Seismic methods have become common for the detection of low-throw faults ahead of underground coal mining. Surface seismic methods cannot theoretically be used where dykes occur, because seismic waves transmit from the surface down to the seams, and reflect back to the surface. Consequently, where sub-vertical structure such as dykes occurs, the surface seismic method fails.The ability of seismic methods to image dykes depends on the geometry used, the dyke thickness and the seismic wave propagation mode in relation to dyke composition and internal structure. Surface seismic methods find it difficult to distinguish between faults/fractures and very thin dykes (1-2m in thickness) when the dyke's thickness is less than the seismic wavelength. Consequently, borehole seismic methods have to be used to detect the presence of such thin dykes.

This paper presents a simplified method for the assessment of creep deformations in rock masses containing bands of low strength or soil strength rock. The main impetus for this work was the need to assess the impact of distinct bands of clay and/or low strength rock on the long term deformation behaviour of a rock pillar formed as part of a series of proposed tunnelling works. In particular, the authors were interested in being able to provide criterion which could be used by site personnel to assess the encountered rock conditions against design assumptions.Creep deformation versus time plots are presented for a range of material consistencies. These plots were produced using the hyperbolic creep equation proposed by Mesri et al (1981). This empirically based equation was chosen for its simplicity and practicality. Discussion is included regarding typical input parameter values and the sensitivity of the results to these values is explored. Finally, in the soil strength materials, the secondary consolidation equation is used to check the veracity of the results calculated using the hyperbolic creep equation.

Optimisation projects are regularly undertaken without knowing the root cause of an issue. It is all well and good to trial a multitude of flotation reagents, change the operating characteristics of your flotation cells, or add more media into your ball mills, but time and again, root cause analysis traces issues back to the performance of hydrocyclones. In JKTech's experience, hydrocyclones are poorly operated and maintained (in both primary grinding and regrind circuits), exacerbating issues that many operations commonly experience.Recent case studies are presented where JKTech has been engaged to improve the process only to discover that the hydrocyclones were the main issue. At one operation it was found that the hydrocyclone feed density gauge was reading significantly lower to the actual density. Following re-calibration of the gauge, and with further improvement of cyclone operational and design parameters using JKSimMet, a significantly sharper efficiency curve was achieved. This resulted in improvements to downstream recoveries while alleviating pumping capacities that were previously constrained by fines and water caught up in recirculating loads.Several other case studies are presented which may seem to be relatively basic, but many basics seem to be getting lost in the day-to-day responsibilities of the modern plant metallurgist. Simple fixes to hydrocyclones can result in significant production increases, but more focus is needed in monitoring these to sustain the benefits.CITATION:Wong, B and Vizcarra, T G, 2018. Process plants are characterised by variability of performance over a wide range of time-scales; reflected in fluctuations in metal recovery, concentrate grade, plant throughput and reagent costs. In turn, these fluctuations impact financial metrics such as operating costs and revenue. The primary cause of plant variability is variation in the physical, lithological and mineralogical characteristics of the ore fed to the plant. The variability of the ore is driven by the intrinsic heterogeneity of the geology and mineralogy of the orebody, the mining method and mine production plan, the capacity to stockpile and blend, as well as the plant flow sheet and the level of plant automation. Whilst the impact of ore variability on process plants is universally recognised, it is rarely quantified in financial terms. Consequently, opportunities to reduce its impact are often overlooked due to the lack of a basis for a quantifiable cost-benefit analysis to justify improvement initiatives. This paper will present case studies using production data from the Renison tin concentrator and a zinc concentrator. These case studies demonstrate that as the standard deviation of plant head grade increases (as a proxy for ore variability), plant metal recovery subsequently reduces. The metal recovery is then converted into plant revenue losses, to quantify the economic impact of ore variability. The Renison case study demonstrated that whilst a very rare occurrence, revenue losses were as high as 34 per cent (relative to the baseline) when standard deviation was at its highest. The zinc concentrator case study demonstrated that revenue losses were as high as 6 per cent (relative to the baseline) when standard deviation was at its highest. Options are available for reducing and managing ore variability in the process plant. These options include changing mining practices so that the ore is fed to the plant with less variability, more advanced process plant control systems and the use of predictive geometallurgical models.

Modelling of industrial coal flotation based on data collected in several Central Queensland flotation plants and supplemented by laboratory data is discussed. The model is kinetic in form and provides the basis of an automatic control system. The important features of the model are, 1. a distribution of flotation rates for each species of particles corresponding to the range of particle sizes, 2. a physical restriction on the removal rate of solids in cells where froth 'overloading' occurs. In this condition the removal rate of solids is proportional to the removal rate of water, 3. enhanced particle floatability due to increasing collector addition where froth overloading does not occur, 4. a second mechanism of recovery of all particles by mechanical associ- ation with water. This mechanism is particularly important in the recovery of fine high-ash species.

The volumetric method of estimating hydrocarbon resources and recoverable reserves is and probably will remain a dominant method in petroleum engineering. The method is technically very simple, but has one main problem: how to express, measure and properly handle the variable and complex uncertainty of each estimate. The computer age brought in the Monte Carlo Simulation method which enables correct arithmetic operation using data with specified probability distribution. However, several problems are still not solved uniquely and still exist. For instance, the determination and description of the distribution of single parameters, the determination of the degree of dependency between parameters (e.g. hydrocarbon saturation-porosity), and standard probabilist- ic definition of generally used categories (e.g. proved, probable, possible). Methods for handling these problems are discussed.

The tankhouse of the electrolytic zinc plant at Nordenham is operating with a very high operating efficiency of 99 per cent. This has been achieved not only by strict control of the quality of the zinc sulphate cell feed solution but also by all the improvements in housekeeping in the tankhouse developed during the past years: aluminium cathode specification, cathode stripping cycle, edge strips, copper contacts, anode isolators, cell cleaning, fittings and washing devices. During 1987 to 1992 the casting department was completely remodelled in order to improve the quality of the zinc products, the safety of the operations and the flexibility. The remodelling includes the enlargement of the area for the casting shop, the storage buildings and the five casting lines on the same ground level. New lines for alloying products and for SHG25 kg zinc ingots have been constructed. The line for galvanising products has new equipment in some parts and the other lines have been modified.

This paper discusses the dewatering strategy adopted and the considerations and procedures required to incorporate a dewaterinq scheme into the Mt Whaleback mining operation. It concludes that in pit pre-dewaterinq has successfully allowed mining to progress below the standing water level with the minimum of disruption or radical change to the mining method. It is recognised however, that dewatering is not a static activity and there is a requirement for ongoing investigations and development. Pre-dewatering commenced in October, 1984. Purpose designed pumping trailers have been employed to minimise the loss of pump availability resulting from the frequent. need to remove and reinstall pumps when close vicinity blasts occur. To July, 1986, some 0.5 Mm' of groundwater had been pumped from the unconfined orebody aquifer. Mining has progressed to some 20 m below the standing water level without. any undue water associated problems. Ultimately, it is ,cheduled to extend some 300 in below the original water level in the West Pit. With the development of an increasing area of the mine below the standing water level, the influence of seasonal high intensity rainfall events, which had previously caused little concern, now need to be addressed. Pumping equipment has been designed to evacuate storm water at a rate consistent with mine production Considerations.

The Western Desert of Egypt is a part of the arid Great Sahara of Africa which extends from the Nile Valley in the east to the Atlantic Ocean in the west. It is covered by a sedimentary sequence of Mezozoic and Teriary rocks. Recently this part of the country (about 65% of its surface area) has attracted an increasing attention in the plan of finding new agricultural and industrial communities outside the crowded Nile Valley. The plan aims to reduce the high population density in the narrow Nile Valley and to cover a considerable part of the increasing food demands in the country of Egypt. Accordingly, the groundwater exploration work in the Western Desert has been remarkably increased in the last decade, however it is still limited compared with the vast area of the Desert. The present work is a part of the groundwater exploration in the 6th October City, a new community located at 40kms west of Cairo. The rock exposures belong to a sedimentary stratigraphic section starting from the Cretaceous in the east to the Pliocene in the west. The Cretaceous outcrops due east are attributed to an almost N-S uplift and forms a thick massive limestone plateau which separates the present area from the Nile Valley. The Teriary section in the west have alternations of different porous formations such as the sands and sandstones which may acquire a good potentiality of groundwater resources. The previous groundwater exploration work included combined geological and geophysical investigations followed by exploration drilling. Although the area lies directly to the west of the Nile Valley, the discovered groundwater is saline and located at deeper reserviores compared with the groundwater in the Nile Valley. This groundwater was described as marine fossile water by the oil companies working in the Western Desert. From the geological point of view, it is believed that the Cretacious massive limestone plateau, in the east, roots to a depth which far exceeds the groundwater levels in the Nile Valley and acts as an impervious barrier between the aquifers in the Nile Valley and the area under investigations.

A distinctive feature of the goldfields of Victoria was the extrac- tion of gold from deep leads, that is the buried river beds of Vic- toria's ancient rivers and streams. It is estimated that about 265,000 kg of gold was produced from Victoria's deep lead mines which comprises about 11.5% of Victoria's total production of gold (Bowen, 1974). The significance of deep lead mining for Victoria, however, went far beyond its economic contribution to Victoria. If Profes- sor Blainey is correct it was the frustrations of mining gold from deep alluvial leads in Ballarat during 1854 which precipitated the Eureka Stockade (Blainey, 1963, 46-52). This event resulted in the implementation of a fair mining administration and was an emphatic statement of the rise of democratic movements in Australia. Much of the technology and skill for mining deep leads had to be developed locally because at that time no other major gold- field elsewhere in Australia or the world had gold deposits with comparable problems. Deep lead mining in Victoria was there- fore largely a home grown industry and the equipment for that industry was often designed and produced in Victoria.

The study presented in this paper is based on the Kiirunavaara underground mine located in the northern part of Sweden. The deposit is mined using the sublevel caving (SLC) mining method. This paper briefly reviews the alternative SLC layouts, as well as presents challenges for the application. In Kiirunavaara currently, the traditional SLC design is employed, however, continuous improvement of material transportation systems used in mines generates a need for investigation of the current and future production area layouts in sublevel caving mines. When identifying the potential benefits of the alternative production area layouts, the production targets and effects must be further investigated to understand the benefits and potential effects. In this study, several different layouts have been investigated and evaluated. The designs include different development configurations and orepass infrastructure moved further away from the orebody and still require further investigation.
