Ore recovered by North Broken Hill Limited as a result of mining operations at its Broken Hill leases is obtained, at the present scale of working, in the proportions of 80% from the North mine and 20% from the British mine sections, and is composed mainly of a silver bearing, sulphide lead and zinc mineral, in association with the gangue materials mentioned later in the text.The lead-zinc sulphide lode at the North mine is deposited in folds in pre-Cambrian sedimentary schists. These folds pitch north-east at approximately 40° and dip north-west at approximately 60°. In plan the deposit appears as two lenses designated on the mine as the "Southern" and "Northern" ore-bodies.The Southern ore-body yields the main tonnage of crude ore. The sulphide mass here overlies a heavy layer of rhodonite which persists with the pitch of the lode. In the central section of this ore-body the sulphide zone is coarse grained and of high grade with a wide range of minerals in the gangue dilution. Quartz, garnet, ftuorite, rhodonite, and felspar are common, whilst chalcopyrites, pyrites, pyrrhotite and green felspar are often present. The Northern ore-body is dolomitic to siliceous in nature. Barrick Gold Corporation is proceeding with development of the Buzwagi Mine in the Lake Victoria Greenstone Belt District of Tanzania. The Buzwagi orebody occurs in the Nzega Shear zone within the Greenstone Belt and is hosted in a K-Feldspar rich granite in contact with mafic volcanic. The orebody presents 2.6 M ounces in 41 Mt of reserves, at 2.0 g/t. Over the ten year mine life, total material movement will be 261 Mt. The feasibility study was completed in 2006 and presented several technical challenges. Two principle challenges are grade control and the impact of dilution on the economic viability of the project. The principle challenges for grade control will be quality control and quality assurance in the sampling of the massive coarse grained granite, which comprises 70 per cent of the deposit. The principle challenge with dilution will be with the selective mining of the narrower mineralised zones contained within the mafic volcanics. This paper will focus on the mine planning methodology which has been applied including selective mine unit (SMU) and dilution estimation, net smelter revenue (NSR) calculation and the effects of cut-off grades to the project economics and mine schedule.

The Australasian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy (AusIMM) is a professional society for all those associated with the activities of the mineral industry. Differences of opinion exist within the membership of the AusIMM on the role it should play in the future as a professional society in a changing industry and world environment. This same dilemma is concerning other professional societies of which the author is a member. Some of the activities and priorities of the AusIMM are reviewed in order to clarify a frequently expressed opinion that it identifies with and supports industry at the expense of representing the interests of its individual members. By definition and by action this is certainly not the case and it is concluded that all activities whether seen to be industry or member orientated serve to benefit both. The AusIMM plays a most important role in integrating and promoting the interests of all sections of the mineral industry whether corporate or individual and the Presidential activities in education this year provide an excellent example of this.

Access to the Rosebery Orebody, which dips into the western slopes of Mount Black at 45¦, has been achieved in sequence by the following means: - A series of adits down to 8 level - An inclined shaft (No. 1 Shaft) sunk internally from 8 level to 14 level - A vertical circular concrete lined shaft (No. 2 Shaft) sunk internally from 4 level to 19 level. Although the orebody has been fairly well defined to 19 level, deeper ore occurrences have been outlined by a series of drill holes decreasing in frequency with depth to 26 level. No. 2 Shaft (sink) was stopped some 10 m below 19 level in order to make an early start on doubled production at West Coast Mines, with the intention of subsequently extending the shaft or of driving a decline from the lowest operating horizon for deeper access. The decline approach was adopted some six years after production commenced from No. 2 Shaft. The reasons for that decision are outlined, together with an account of the constraints and design requirements imposed by commencing by a vertical shaft in the hanging wall of the orebody.

This paper briefly describes the construction in 1979/80 of a 70m deep trial open pit coal mine near Bowmans S.A. and describes more fully the hydrogeological aspects of the exercise. The primary purpose of the Trial Pit was to provide a large sample (700 tonnes) of coal for combustion tests to be carried out in West Germany and the United States of America. Consideration was given to obtaining the sample of coal by drilling and by shaft sinking as alternatives to open pit methods. It was expected that economic mining of the deposit on an operational scale could only be achieved by open cut methods and it was recognised that major uncertainties existed in planning such a mine in the deep unconsolidated multi-aquifer deposit. It was therefore elected to obtain the bulk sample by constructing a trial open pit, which would be closely monitored to provide as much data as possible for future planning of a full scale mine. The dewatering of the Trial Pit was achieved using 26 deep pumping wells, assisted in the later stages by several hundred well points. This was probably the largest dewatering project currently in operation in Australia.

During the development of a mining project, samples are taken for metallurgical tests. The sample can be a composite sample made of material coming from a selection of various drilling products or a sample coming from a mining test. This sample can represent several tonnes of material which are analysed and split to be used in various tests.In the current case, a composite sample is dedicated to semi-autogenous grinding (SAG) pilot plant tests. The property of interest is then the size distribution of the material. The sample is mixed and a subsample is taken to measure the size distribution which is considered as the feed size distribution. Then the remaining material of the sample is divided in several subsamples for batch grinding tests at different operating conditions. The product of each grinding test is then analysed to measure its size distribution.The grinding performances are analysed at the light of the measured size distributions for feed and product. But what is the accuracy of the measurement of these size distributions? What is the variability of the feed knowing each feed is just a subsample of the initial sample?The Pierre Gy theory of sampling answers these questions.The current paper presents, through a real example, the calculation of the measurement error of the size distributions and the variability of the feed between the different tests. The Prominent Hill copper-gold deposit is located approximately 150 km north west of Olympic Dam, on the southern margin of the Mount Woods Inlier in South Australia. Its discovery in November 2001 resulted from the application of a geological model developed from geological, geophysical and petrophysical data pertaining to the Olympic Dam deposit. The discovery has dispelled the notion the Olympic Dam may be unique, and that another deposit like it is unlikely to be found. The Prominent Hill mineralisation is hosted by haematite-matrix hydrothermal breccias, which have suffered extensive iron-sericite-silica alteration and overprinting. Copper, gold, barium, fluorine, uranium, cerium and lanthanum are all intrinsically associated with the hydrothermal iron. Breccias intrude an east-west striking, fault-controlled sedimentary succession, which is flanked to both the south and north by volcanic complexes. Many similarities between Prominent Hill and Olympic Dam are documented including geological setting, mineralogy, breccia styles, and alteration. Differences relate largely to the nature of the immediate host rocks. The similarities and difference provide key data for improving exploration models for this style of iron oxide copper-gold deposit, both within the Gawler Craton as well as globally.

Mining in the state of Western Australia (WA) formally commenced in the 1840s, and over the ensuing 180 years has evolved to be the epicentre of the Australian mining industry and a significant contributor to the national economy. The lithology of WA is replete with mineralisation that hosts uranium and ‘critical minerals’ required for the global renewable energy sector. The state’s first uranium mine is under development, and high levels of activity are occurring in the state’s nascent critical minerals sector, with 168 WA-based companies pursuing rare earth-bearing minerals, 51 of which are actively drilling on their tenements. WA’s mineral deposits typically contain levels of the naturally occurring radionuclides (NORs) thorium-232 and uranium-238 that are elevated above the global crustal average. Workers are exposed to NORs during the mining and mineral extraction processes, and radiation doses that exceed applicable exposure standards may eventuate. The research traces the history of worker radiation doses from 1977 to 2020, finding the maximum dose was 163.4 mSv, more than eight times the current derived annual dose limit. Whilst 93.5 per cent of all workers received doses of less than 5.0 mSv per annum, the potential for elevated doses is ever-present as witnessed by 10.3 mSv reported in 2009/2010. The increase in activity coincides with a revision of the dose coefficients (DCs) associated with the intake of radionuclides. The research evaluates the revised DCs and forecasts doses from inhalation of radioactive dusts will nearly double, and lead to workers receiving doses exceeding 5 mSv for the first time since 2009/2010. The research finds that the current regulatory framework is fit-for-purpose. However, inter-agency relationships, and the capacity of the regulator to effectively regulate the current and future number of mining operations is questioned. The mining industry is vulnerable to capability and capacity constraints – but has failed to respond to issues in relation to competent radiation safety officers first raised by the Winn Inquiry (Winn, Mathews and Tough, 1984). Disconcertingly, monitoring of worker exposures to NORs reached a nadir in 2021, raising questions as to the veracity of worker doses reported to the regulatory agency. The research recommends personal dust sampling be prioritised.

AustraliaÆs opal and sapphire mining industry has fallen from its peak in the 1980s and 1990s into a significant low today. This is not due to exhaustion of the resource, but instead an over-reliance of the Australian miner on achieving a fair price for the gemstone product from offshore middlemen dealers. Gemstone and geological research is also at a low as Federal higher education expenditure has fallen with research institutions relying increasingly on private funding in an environment of restricted autonomy and flexibility for researchers. What little remaining research skills the universities have is being bled into the private sector as a result of the mining boom and encouraged by lower than average academic salaries. Nevertheless, some highly innovative research has been taking place, often by self-funded individuals and retired academics simply with a desire to advance the understanding of the particular branch of science in which they are interested. New models for the formation of sapphire and opal are now beginning to be applied to the exploration for these gemstone commodities. This research, together with well thought out plans for managing the gemstone product through its value-adding steps to the jewellery retail level, has the potential to bring about a resurgence in the Australian gemstone industry.

"Unconventional gas resources, including coal seam gas (CSG) reservoirs, can be located above and below aquifers that provide groundwater for agricultural, industrial, urban and other uses. Development of these resources may, therefore, lead to potential impacts on groundwater supply.Management of reservoir/aquifer interconnections necessitates a program of focused data acquisition. For example, groundwater transfer from shallow aquifers to underlying CSG reservoirs may occur where CSG-containing units subcrop beneath shallow aquifers, possibly at significant distances from operating wells.Arrow Energy is undertaking studies of connectivity between aquifers including an investigation in collaboration with the Queensland Office of Groundwater Impact Assessment to evaluate connectivity between the Condamine Alluvium (CA) and CSG-containing Walloon Coal Measures (WCM).The Condamine Valley hosts highly productive agricultural land with groundwater resources heavily utilised for irrigation. Water demand outstrips available supply and groundwater has been subject to restrictions on further development since the early 1970s. Developments that could have an additional impact on groundwater resources in the CA are of major concern to local landholders. This paper describes: planned field investigations at two sites: 1. Stratheden, where pumping from the WCM will be undertaken 2. It is predicted that underground coal mines in the Bowen Basin will have a significant rise in heat problems as mines aim to increase production, depth of extraction and length of longwall panels. At an actual Bowen Basin mine, extended longwall panels greater than 4 km in length are planned to be mined at depths with a virgin rock temperature (VRT) of more than 40¦C. Research has been completed into the reasons for the substantial increase in temperature at the face for underground coal mines in the Bowen Basin. An analysis into heat loads produced at the Bowen Basin mine for the development and production phases shows a significant amount of additional cooling will be required to ensure safe working temperatures. All of the major sources of heat, which included both natural and mine induced heating, were considered for the analysis. Maximum heat loads were assessed, together with peak intake surface temperature to determine the maximum cooling capacity required at a Bowen Basin mine. These maximum heat loads were assessed for a specific longwall panel, Longwall A, which extends to over 4.1 km in length and at a maximum depth of over 330 m, resulting in a VRT above 40¦C. The cooling system positional efficiency was analysed, determining that underground cooling via an indirect heat exchanger was preferred to increasing the capacity of the current bulk air cooling (BAC) on the surface. Olympic Dam is the eighth largest Cu deposit and the largest U deposit in the world, with approximately 35 million tonnes of contained Cu and 1.2 million tonnes of U. The most recent resource estimate was for 2.95 billion tonnes of mineralised material with average grades of 1.2 per cent Cu, 0.4 kg/t U, 0.5 g/t Au, 2.6 g/t Ag as contained mineral resources. Olympic Dam is expected to produce >200 000 tonnes of Cu and 4200 tonnes of U3O8 from 9.8 million tonnes of ore in 2004, making it the 12th largest Cu producer in the world. One of the impediments to achieving targeted rates of production has been oversize material (>0.9 m) reporting to stope draw points. A major contributor to oversize material may be overbreak along pre-existing structural weaknesses from stope walls and backs during the production life of a stope. Underbreaking to structures can also have a detrimental effect on the performance of a stope. In an effort to understand the influence of structural geology on stope performance, WMC Resources and SRK Consulting partnered during 2003 to refine the current system of structural mapping, and to use historical data to produce a structural interpretation covering a large part of the mining area. The interpretation has been wireframed in DATAMINETM into a three-dimensional structural framework model. To date, there are more than 600 structures of >50 m strike length incorporated into the structural framework model, which covers a study area 1500 m + 600 m + 350 m. A back-analysis exercise to assess the influence of interpreted structures on overbreak and underbreak was completed for laser-surveyed stopes.

In this paper, the technology of producing fluxed pellets by using hydrated lime as binder instead of bentonite was carried out. The properties of the two types green balls (0.8 per cent bentonite and 2.0 per cent hydrated lime) were as follows: drop numbers of 4.8 - 5.0 times/0.5 m, compressive strength of 19.7 - 24.2 N/pellet and thermal shock temperature of 280° - 385°, respectively, under the same conditions of 1.5 per cent coke, 1.45 basicity and balling at 8.5 per cent moisture for 13 min in disc pelletiser. Comparing with bentonite as binder, the compressive strength of fired pellets with hydrated lime is elevated by 13.8 per cent and climbs up to 3113 N/pellet under the following conditions: preheating at 1050°C for ten minutes and fi ring at 1300°C for 15 min. In the mean time, the hydrated lime also improves the metallurgical performance of fired pellets. The reduction index was enhanced from 68.6 - 70.6 per cent, RDI+3.15+ increased from 90.1 to 98.8 per cent and reduction swelling index dropped from 22.4 - 7.4 per cent, respectively. The mineral compositions and microstructure of fi red pellets shows that the fired pellets containing 2.0 per cent possess more calcium ferrite and magnesium ferrite and compact microstructure, leading to the higher compressive strength.

Production targets are the basis for almost every decision made by operations personnel in the daily operation of a concentrator. It is the production targets that determine how the plant is operated and therefore determine its efficiency. However, to achieve maximum plant efficiency production targets must be relevant to the process and achievable.In RoseberyÆs case, for many years, production targets were taken from budget data which, with the exception of mill feed tonnes and grades were carried forward from the previous budget. The zinc concentrate grade target was fixed at 57 per cent Zn, a long-term average; it was the accepted æstandardÆ for Rosebery. Historical data showed this target was never consistently achieved and plant efficiency was highly variable.Investigations into the possible causes for the variable performance ruled out plant and mechanical issues. Despite the Rosebery concentratorÆs age the plant and equipment are more than serviceable and reliable. The mineralogy of the ore and specifically the iron content of the sphalerite was found to be the most significant determinant of zinc concentrate grade. It was found with increasing frequency that the zinc grade of the sphalerite in the ore was below the zinc concentrate grade target. Consequently on these occasions attempts to meet the required concentrate target destabilised the process resulting in plant inefficiencies.Using the correlation between iron and zinc, data modelling was able to accurately predict the maximum zinc concentrate grade achievable for any ore type. By using on stream analysis instrumentation the operations personnel are now provided with constantly updated concentrate grade targets. By knowing the mineralogical limits of the ore at the time it is being treated process stability is maintained allowing plant efficiency to be optimised. This has resulted in a step change in plant performance and a significant increase in revenue.CITATION:Harris, G R, 2012. Continuous improvement might be defined as seeking incremental improvement over time through improved equipment, processes, technology and the efforts of people. Most people working in ore processing facilities embrace the general principles of continuous improvement. However, given the industry-wide issues with skilled personnel and the constantly changing environment in ore processing facilities, it is often difficult to identify improvements in a facility over a given time period. The driver for these outcomes is the use of basic principles and technology to achieve best practice targets. The process involves four stages: develop standards of practice to define best practice in specific areas; write procedures to guide the organisation towards these best practices; implement the procedures and develop a review process to provide a method of measuring performance against best practice.By reviewing performance against best practice on a regular basis, the organisation measures progress towards the best practice targets and the incremental improvement between these regular reviews is a measure of continuous improvement.This paper provides the background for developing standards of practice for metal accounting, metallurgy and metallurgical management. Atlas Copco is one of the worldÆs leading providers of industrial productivity solutions (Atlas Copco, 2009). Furthermore, the company spans 160 markets and held 34 000 employees at the end of 2008. The company is organised under three ætechniquesÆ whereby the Construction and Mining TechniqueÆs business division is located within +rebro, Sweden. This paper is aimed at briefly facilitating information on how the company and more specifically, the Construction and Mining Technique is run. Also, by sharing my experiences, this paper is intended to encourage and motivate students currently studying for a degree relevant to the minerals industry, to apply for this extremely beneficial scholarship. Through a number of presentations relating to the various divisions, products and aftermarket services of the company, I came to realise that Atlas Copco extends beyond simply selling equipment suitable for the mining and civil industries. This tour through Sweden also contained highlights of visiting the Underground Rock Excavation factory, Surface Drilling Equipment factory and Secoroc divisions. I was also fortunate enough to participate in a tour of the LKAB mine in Kiruna. In addition, time was allocated to less industry related activities, and I was able to go dog sledging, sip vodka cocktails out of ice glasses at the Ice Hotel and enjoy traditional Swedish foods of moose and reindeer. Most important and memorable to me; however, was the ability for employees of Atlas Copco to speak of the company and their products with such passion and enthusiasm, which truly made this a motivational and unforgettable experience.

Best practice mine sampling should provide a detailed quantification of all potential sources of error at each stage of sampling, sample preparation and assaying.Quality assurance (QA) should include testing for and quantifying potential sampling errors, and should be the basis for establishing ongoing sampling protocols, should set error limits and define quality control (QC) procedures. QA should be within the framework of Theory of Sampling (TOS) but may not involve the estimation of the sampling constant and the application of Gy’s formula.Best practice QC should be carried out efficiently and in a timely and cost-effective manner with regular reporting against the guidelines established by QA.This paper provides an assessment of, and checklist for, current best practice sampling QA/QC with examples from operating gold mines including the QA/QC of underground (UG) reverse circulation (RC) grade control.CITATION:Carswell, J T, 2017. SAG Mill process control classically maintains the SAG mill volumetric filling within a set operating range. Typically a SAG mill weight measurement, by either bearing pressure transducers or load cells, is used as an inferred measurement of volumetric filling. To maintain volumetric filling within a set operating range the SAG weight setpoint use for process control requires regular review due to changes in SAG mill charge density (rock:ball ratio) and the wearing of mill liners. At Lihir Gold Mine in Papua New Guinea, the use of SAG mill weight for process control is additionally complicated by compromised load cells and drifting bearing pressure measurements. The need for an improved method of measuring and controlling volumetric filling led to the recent installation of the Outotec MillSense, a SAG mill toe angle instrument. This paper introduces a new, safer bulk emulsion loading system for underground mining operations. The features and benefits of the equipment, along with the use of Dyno Nobel Inc patented gassed emulsion technology, is summarised in the application of a stope blast with very difficult and complex ground conditions. The paper describes methods used to optimise the amount of energy required to break the ore while protecting the integrity of the surrounding backfilled pillar.

Over the past three decades, mining operations have seen a significant increase in the use of contractors for mining, camp management and catering, recruitment, maintenance, power management, and commissioning. More recently contractors have been engaged for stores and logistics, OH&S, environmental, exploration, training etc. In some countries, such as South Africa, the trend is towards total outsourcing of all aspects of a mining operation which is coordinated by the owners’ management team.During the Global Financial Crisis (GFC) more Australian companies considered and/or took on this approach to recruiting for both projects and operations as mining companies were forced to rethink their corporate strategies as commodity prices plummeted to low levels, pushing operations and projects into potentially financially unviable territory.This paper discusses the labour recruitment, commissioning and operating strategy of Western Areas NL (WSA), with the assistance of Independent Metallurgical Operations Pty Ltd (IMO), as it progressed construction, commissioning and operation of the Cosmic Boy nickel concentrator at the Forrestania Nickel Project during and post GFC. The use of IMO contractors allowed Western Areas to mitigate labour cost risk during the uncertainty caused by the GFC and let their management team focus on the task of bringing a new operation into viable and profitable production.
