THERE are discrepancies reported in the literature regarding the micro and macro stress-strain behavior of metals and alloys. In particular, Young's modulus and micro yield measurements often show significant variations depending upon the techniques employed.'-" The purpose of this note is to correlate measurements made with four techniques and to indicate where some of these discrepancies might arise. Allied use of these techniques can provide a complete and consistent characterization of micro and macro stress-strain behavior (over the strain range of 10-9 to 10--2 in. in.-') from a minimum number of samples. Techniques. The techniques employed for measuring stress-strain behavior involved the use of a) linear differential transformers, b) SR-4 strain gages, c) longitudinal resonance waves, and d) X-ray diffraction. Specimen geometries and preparations are summarized in Table I for each technique. Differential Transformer and Strain Measurements. An Instron universal testing machine, modified with an alignment device, was used to apply the load via parallel-jaw grips. The signal from the load cell was applied to the Y scale of a Moseley X-Y recorder (sensitivity of 10 lb load per in. chart). The elongation was monitored simultaneously with strain gages mounted on three sides of the rectangular specimen, and with two linear variable differential transformers (LVDT) mounted at 90 deg to one another on faces that also contained the strain gages, Fig. 1. The signal from one of the LVDT's was applied to the X scale of the recorder (sensitivity 40 µ in. elongation per in. chart) in order to trace a continuous load-elonga-tion curve. Concurrently, the strain on the same face (i.e., the face monitored by the LVDT) was recorded by the corresponding strain gage. A stress-strain curve was plotted from the load cell-strain gage data and was compared to the stress-strain curve (converted from load-elongation) plotted from the continuous load cell-LVDT trace. THIS paper describes the milling practice and operating results of the recently installed heavy-media separation plant of Barton Mines Corporation, the world's largest producer of garnet. This pioneer application of heavy-media separation (sink-float) processes for the beneficiation of a nonmetallic ore is unique in many respects, the details of which will be apparent from the following presentation. CHARACTERISTICS OF THE ORE The property is on Gore Mountain, 5 miles west of the village of North Creek, New York, and 11 miles by road. The altitude of the mine is approximately 2800 feet. The valuable mineral, garnet, occurs in a surface deposit, the ore body being about ¾ mile long and varying in width from 50 to 300 ft. The garnet, principally almandite, Fe3A12 (Si04)3, occurs in a metamorphic rock of uncertain origin. The gangue mineral is principally hornblende, which constitutes from 40 to 80 per cent of the rock. The remainder of the gangue is divided between plagioclase feldspars and hypersthene, with smaller amounts of biotite, apatite and pyrite. The garnet content of the ore body varies from 5 to 20 per cent of the mass and averages about 10 to 12 per cent. The garnet occurs as crystals, mostly imperfectly developed, known locally as "pockets." These crystals vary in size from a fraction of an inch to a foot or more in diameter. Occasionally crystals have been found up to 30 and 36 in. in diameter but they average 4 to 6 inches. Nearly every crystal of garnet is surrounded by a rim of coarsely crystalline hornblende. The quarry faces are striking in appearance, showing crimson-red garnet crystals with their coal black rims scattered over a grayish black background. The specific gravity of the garnet is 3.8 to 4.1 while that of the hornblende ordinarily is 3.07 to 3.24. Some specimens of very dense hornblende have been found with a specific gravity as high as 3.40. The garnet crystals are laminated in structure, and readily cleave into flat, tabular pieces with sharp, chisel-like edges. Even when crushed to a very fine size, the garnet retains this flat, sharp, slivery grain shape. This characteristic, together with its hardness and toughness, gives it its value as an abrasive. FORMER OPERATIONS Mining operations have been carried on for 60 years. Until 1023, only the oxidized (soft rock) section of the ore body was mined. The oxidation, which affected the garnet only slightly, made possible the removal of the garnet from the rock by hand after it was blasted down, using small hand picks. Thin films (of mica have unique attributes that are exceptionally good for studies of high-field conduction mechamisms in thin-film insulators and the quantum mechanical tunneling of electrons from metal to metal. The principal advantages of using mica films are that the films are crystalline and the cleavage planes occur every 10Å. This property results in films whose thicknesses are integral multiples of 10Å and whose surfaces are uniformly parallel over sizable areas. Hence, very well-defined metal -mica-metal structures are possible. Furthermore, the fact that the insulator is split fro??! a bulk sample allows the index of refraction, dielectric constant, forbidden energy gap, and trapping levels and their density- to be obtained directly from measurements performed on thick samples Of mica rather than requiring that these properties be interred from the conduction characterrsties alone. In the work to he described, all the cleaving was done in a high vacuum just prior to the evaporation of metal elertrodes so as to avoid air contamination at the interfaces. Results of these studies indicate that the current through the 30 and 40Å films exhibited quantitative agreement with the theoretical voltage and temperature dependence derived by Strallon for the tunneling of electrons directly from metal to metal. Thicker films at room temperature exhibited volt-ampere curves suggesting Schottky emission of electrons from the cathode into the conduction band of mica. However, the thermal activation energy was smaller than that found from other measurements, and the experimsntal Schottky dielectric constant was larger than the square of the index of refraction. These facts would indicate that the electrons were being injected into polaron stales ill the iusulator. At low temperatures and high fields, the current through the thicker films did not exhibit the Fowler -Nordheim dependence as would be predicted by a simple extention of the theory of field emission into a vacuum. THE mechanism of electrons tunneling through insulating films has received considerable attention in the last few years due to the devices possible utilizing tunneling'-4 and the success of tunneling in the study of superconductivity.5,6 Until the recent paper by Hartman and chivian7 on the study of aluminum oxide, there had been no reported successful quantitative experimental fit to the theory. Their method of fabrication necessarily results in a polycrystalline insulator, the stoichiometry of which is nonuniform from one side to the other. This structure also introduces complications to the shape of the barrier which is set up by the insulator since the insulator possesses a spatially nonuniform band structure and dielectric constant. Due to these facts an analysis of the data in terms of a pviori barrier shape is of questionable validity. The use of muscovite mica not only overcomes these disadvantages but, as an insulating thin film, provides physical properties (dielectric constant. trapping levels and their densities, forbidden energy gap, and so forth) that are identical to the easily measured values of the bulk sample. Furthermore, it is a single-crystal insulator whose cleavage planes (10Å apart8,9) provide uniformly parallel surfaces of well-known separation. This material is therefore ideally suited to the study of electron-transport phenomena. Von Hippel10 using a 6.5-µ-thick sample was the first to observe the high-field conductivity (=5 x l06 v per cm) of mica. No attempt was made to develop an empirical formula, but Von Hippel concluded from intuitive arguments that the current was being space-charge limited by trapped electrons. Mal'tsev11 in a more recent investigation at high fields observed a dependence of the conductivity a on the field F of the form exp(ßF1/2). This dependence was attributed to the Frenkel effect,12,13 a Schottky type of emission from filled traps. No mention in the English abstract was made of the thicknesses of his samples or, and more important, of how well the value of ß fit Frenkel's theory. In 1962 Foote and Kazan14 developed a technique for splitting mica to a thickness of less than 100Å and observed a dependence of the current density j on the field of the form j = jo exp(ßF1/2) on a thin sample thought to be 40Å thick. Assuming that this was a Schottky emission process and that the appropriate dielectric constant for such a mechanism would be closer to a low-frequency value of 7.6, Foote and Kazan calculated from ß an independent thickness of the mica of 36Å. No further investigation was made of the phenomenon. However, the work reported in this paper indicates that the film measured by Foote and Kazan was probably 60Å thick, the error arising from the measurement of the very small metal-insulator-metal diode areas that were used, along with the diode capacitance and dielectric constant, to calculate the thickness. In the research reported in this paper, Foote and Kazan's technique was modified to cleave muscovite in a vacuum of 10-6 Torr, immediately after which metal electrodes were evaporated creating Au-mica-A1 diodes. OUT of the fabulous iron ranges of Michigan?s Upper Peninsula since Pearl Harbor have come go to the steel mills to become tanks, guns, ships, and other weapons for a United Nations' victory. But the contributions to the war effort, as far as Michigan's iron country is concerned, do not stop there. The same men who mine iron ore deep inside the earth also are "mining" on top of the ground, gleaning a harvest of scrap iron and steel that is writing a big chapter in the War Production Board's salvage program. At virtually every mine over an area of a hundred square miles, everyone from the top mine official and straw boss to the man in the dippings is scrap conscious. They know the importance of the ore they mine but they are equally familiar with the importance of iron and steel scrap in war production. The successful job they are doing in salvage is a tribute to the entire Upper Michigan mining industry and to the man who marshaled them into action-John M. Bush, chief of the land department for the Cleveland- Cliffs Iron Co. at Negaunee, and for ten years an A.I.M.E. member. Also, this job should be an inspiration to 611 mining. metallurgical, and petroleum communities as to the latent possibilities of organized scrap recovery.

ONCE a millionaire's plaything, the Santo Domingo mine, in Peru, is now, because of its metallurgical problem, an engineer's nightmare. It is deep in the montaña jungles of the Amazon basin, 140 mi. northeast of Tirapata, which is a rail- way station between Puno and Cuzco, and about 250 mi. east of Mollendo on the Pacific. The discovery was 111ade by Marian(-) Quispe, an Indian, who, while searching for quinine bark, was attracted by a slab of gold quartz 1x1 the rock wall of a narrow canyon. He broke off a piece, weighing 47 Spanish ounces and, that time, worth approximately $900. This he took to Francisco Velasco and Manuel Estrada, merchants of Coaza, who persuaded Quispe to lead them to the place, five days' journey on foot through a tangled wilderness. THIS paper gives a short review of the installation for and the use of gas, as a. fuel, at the Anaconda Reduction Works of the Anaconda Copper Mining Co. Before putting in gas tile fuels used were pulverized coal, lump coal, coke distillate and oil. These fuels are now almost entirely eliminated. For nearly fifty years bituminous coals from Wyoming and Montana fields had been used. These coals were of a good grade, analyzing 11,300 B.t.u. and having an ash content of 12 per cent. When hydro-electric power replaced steam-driven equipment, the coal requirements were reduced; and, on account of improvements in metallurgy and/ or in furnace design, the quantity was lessened. Later, oil and distillate were introduced and used in some of the operations. All of these things tended toward the lessening of the amount of coal used, and had it not been for the increase in the size of the plant, the tonnage used would have been small when the change was made to gas.

THE value to the engineering profession of a liaison between the engineering societies of Russia and America, through Engineering Council, was the subject of a meeting in the Engineering Societies Building attended by over 500 persons. In introducing the subject, Mr. N. A. Stephanoff, President of the Russian Society of America, said: In Russia, engineers were divided into two classes: those who had graduated from the high technical schools and the practical engineers who had graduated from special technical schools. These technical schools were divided into three groups: The first corresponded to the German polytechnical schools with many departments, mechanical, chemical, metallurgical, mining, etc. The second group corresponded to the French special schools of the "Écoles des Ponts et Chaussées." "École des Mines." The third group was formed by the Military and Naval Academies of Engineers. In 1910, Russia's high technical schools had about 45,000 students, whose training covered a period of not less than five years, and who enjoyed all opportunities afforded by laboratories in no way inferior to those of Germany.

MY conclusions apply to the engineer in California ore hunting; and, because the product has been overwhelmingly gold, that means gold-ore hunting. But, I wish to think of ore hunting, not as employment for engineers, but as engineering. I wish, moreover, to think of it as productive of ore in significant quantity. The small mine, even if good, means little. Only new districts, or large extensions of old districts can engage our attention here. The conclusions are summarized as follows: (1) The bright color of California mining history comes from the suddenness and intensity of its outburst of gold. Had the mining been averaged from the start, it would soon have become dimmed among greater industries. For fifty years, California has proceeded as an agricultural, timber and oil, but not a mining region. 1

High-grade cobalt concentrates were produced from the complex Blackbird ore with very good recovery in continuous pilot-plant operations in which a low-grade bulk cobaltite-pyrite flotation concentrate was roasted in a multiple-hearth furnace to oxidize the pyrite selectively. The cobaltite was floated from the resulting calcine.

Densities of melts 0f the lime-iron oxide-silica system in contact with solid iron have been measured by the maximum bubble pressure method in the temperature range 1250° to 1440°C and the composition range 0 to 40 mol pct lime, 15 to 100 mol pct iron oxide, and 0 to 55 mol pct silica. Densities range from 4.65 g cm 3 for wustite at 1440°C to 2.75 g cm-&apos; at 1350°C for a melt containing 30 mol pct lime, 20 mol pct iron oxide, and 50 mol pct silica. The results are interpreted in terms of a postulate that the melts can be regarded as a random array of oxygen ions in which regions of local order exist to satisfy the coordination requirements 0.f the cations. An understanding of the nature of metallurgical slags is basic to the development of a sound theoretical description of heavy metallurgical extractive and refining processes. Because these liquids are complex, direct measurements of their properties has not thrown much light on their structure. This has led to the approach of measuring the properties of simpler liquids, and building up their complexity until slag compositions are reached. In this way the density of liquid iron silicates was measured in a previous study1 and the present work represents a further stage in this synthesis. EXPERIMENTAL The technique used in the measurement of density was the maximum bubble pressure method. Details of the apparatus and procedure were similar to those previously reported,&apos; with the exception that a constant voltage transformer was used to supply the power input to the furnace and six silicon carbide resistance elements were used in place of the molybdenum winding. With these modifications melt temperature could be maintained within 1 centigrade degree during the course of a run. The silica used to prepare the melts was washed natural quartz ignited at 1000°C; wustite was prepared by air-melting A.R. grade ferric oxide in an iron crucible and lime was prepared by air ignition, at 1000°C, of weighed quantities of A.R. grade calcium carbonate, previously air-dried at 110°C. The finely ground constituents were intimately mixed in a glass ball mill prior to melting. Temperatures quoted are accurate to * 5°C and the standard deviation of the density values, calculated by the method of least squares, ranged from 0.5 to 1.8 pet. However, replicate determinations of density on different melts of the same nominal composition at the same nominal temperature did not vary by more than 1 pct, Table I, and this figure has been taken as an estimate of the accuracy of the density results. The density of carbon tetra-chloride was also measured as a check on the absolute performance of the experimental method. At 20°C a value of 1.593 * 0.002 g cm"3 was obtained; this compares with the literature value2 of 1.595 g cm"3. Results of experiments designed to measure the dependence of the density of lime-iron oxide-silica melts, in contact with solid iron, on composition and temperature are shown in Table I. Because iron sometimes precipitated in the sample during quenching, the Fe203 chemical analyses were only poorly reproducible and should be taken as a guide rather than as absolute values. Fig. 1 shows the data from various sources for the density of liquid iron silicates and Fig. 2 shows isodensity contours at 1410°C for lime-iron oxide-silica melts, calculated by graphical interpolation of smoothed curves drawn through the experimental results, together with the 1400°C results of Adachi and ogino3 and Pope1 and Esin.4 Fig. 3 shows the isothermal variation with composition of the volume of melt per gram ion of oxygen at 1410°C and Fig. 4 shows regions in which the temperature coefficient of this volume is negative, positive, or negligible (<0.005 cm3 deg-I). DISCUSSION a) Disparity Between Reported Density Results. Consider the system iron oxide-silica, the results for which are summarized in Fig. 1. Although there is some difference in the temperatures at which the various densities apply, this difference is not sufficiently large to account for the observed discrepancies. The reliability of the present results for the low-silica region has been confirmed by measurement of the density of liquid wustite by three different techniques. At 1410°C the density measured by a balanced-column method was 4.55 g cm"3, by a combination balanced-column and gas-densitometer method 4.59 g emd3, and by a pycnometer method 4.53 g cm"3. Schenck, Frohberg, and Hoffermann&apos; have also reported a value of 4.55 g cm"3 for the density of liquid wustite at 1400°C. It must be concluded, therefore, that neither Pope1

Discussion of the paper of Albert F. J. Bordeaux (Bi-Monthly Bulletin, No. 23, September, 190S, pp. 629 to 640). A. H. BROMLY, Zihuatanejo, Guerrero, Mexico (communication to the Secretary*) :-The following criticism of what "is offered as a summary which may be found useful by mining engineers," is not dictated by any captious spirit, but in the interest of historical and scientific accuracy. The States of Queretaro and Oaxaca have produced sufficient silver to warrant more extended notice. Referring to Pachuca, State of Hidalgo, the somewhat loose and. inexact statement is made that "the ore-deposit is an andesite, intermixed with quartz-veins, rich from the surface." A better description would be,-the ore-deposits consist of quartz-veins in andesite. It is notable that many of the rich shoots worked in recent days did not come to surface. In consequence, Pachuca, is often quoted by the ill-informed as a camp in which values improve with depth, the truth being that the veins carry shoots, or clavos, some of which were exposed at surface and some not. The name of " electric plow," applied to the mechanical stirrer of recent use, is certainly not to be recommended. The stirrer, or agitator, consists essentially of a traversing gang-plow, operated by power through shafting, drums, and wire-rope. The fact that in certain plants the motive-power used is electricity does not make it an electric plow. Such a name suggests a machine of which the motor is an essential and integral part; which is not so in this case. A lathe in a factory driven by water-power is not called a hydraulic lathe. My experience agrees with Dr. Raymond&apos;s note as to azulaque, which in sortie districts is also applied to blue copper carbonate. The El Oro, Esperanza, and Mexico mines should be allocated to the State of Mexico; the Dos Estrellas being in Michoacan, as stated. The El Oro quartz certainly does not appeal to me

One of the major challenges to management in the mining industry today is the establishment and maintenance of positive and dynamic programs for cost control and cost reduction. To meet the challenge, management must have a good cost system. There are various types of cost accounting systems in use today: some companies check their, performance by comparing the costs incurred during one period with the costs incurred during previous periods, while others compare the current costs with estimated costs which the company considers desirable. A third type of system is a standard cost system which provides predetermined allowances for the various cost elements and operating activities. Such a system, based on sound standards, can be established to fix responsibility for cost performance in each segment of the operation; recognize the impact of volume or rate of activity by establishing a standard volume and evaluating departures: take into consideration fixed and variable costs and their dissimilar behaviour at varying levels of operations: and provide consistent and equitable yardsticks for measuring performance.

A detailed transmission electron microscopy investigation was carried out in connection with a manganese Hadfield Steel. At small plastic strains, numerous individual intrinsic stacking faults are observed. With increased plastic deformation, the stacking faults thicken into twin lamellae which in turn subdivide the original austenite matrix into smaller domains. The twin boundaries act as strong barriers to subsequent dislocation motion and is in a sense equivalent to grain refinement. It is this "grain refinement" which is believed to be the cause of the very high work hardening rates in the Hadfield Steels. In many cases, especially where an hcp phase is the stable one at low temperatures, the stacking fault energy in fcc metals and alloys decreases with decreasing temperature.&apos; Since stacking faults of the intrinsic type are precursors of both twins as well as the hexagonal close packed structure, both of these entities should become more frequent as the temperature of a fcc crystal is lowered. In the case of the twin, there is no chemical driving force for its formation and it is generally necessary to provide the required driving force by an applied stress, i.e., strain energy. In the case of the hcp structure the transformation from the fcc modification can occur spontaneously (marten-sitically) since a decrease in chemical energy does in fact occur; however, an applied stress will provide an even greater driving force toward complete transformation. Since the transformation products mentioned above occur in an inhomogeneous manner throughout the crystal and since these can act as potential barriers to further plastic deformation2 marked strengthening effects can be anticipated. Also because metal and alloy strenghening is in general proportional to the shear modulus, these effects should be greatest in steels of the austenitic type (y), i.e., the fcc types. Perhaps the two most important steels in this category are the austenitic stainless steels and the Hadfield manganese steels. Both may be quenched from elevated temperatures so as to retain the austenitic states characteristic of those temperatures. The effect of subsequent deformation at lower tem- peratures has a profound effect on the stress-strain curves of these alloys. In particular Fig. 1 shows the compressive stress-strain curves obtained with an 18-8 stainless steel which was quenched from 1850°C after annealing for 1 hr so as to produce all y. As the temperature is lowered, the work hardening rate increases markedly. Although some hcp or c mar-tensite can be generated by plastic deformation as the temperature is lowered,~ it is believed to be a transition phase4 and most of the martensite produced is of the bcc or a variety.3 It is this stress induced martensite which gives rise to the very low initial work hardening at 77°K as can be seen in the stress-strain curve in Fig. 1. Similar low initial work hardening rates have been observed in the stress induced Ni-Ti martensites.5 Fig. 2 shows that an even more rapid rate of work hardening occurs in the Hadfield steels treated in the same way as that described for the 18-8 stainless steels a; the temperature is lowered. It is this ability to work harden to such high stress levels that makes the Hadfield steels particularly suitable for armor plate and heavy construction equipment. However, unlike the case of Fig. 1, no initial low rate of work hardening is observed in any of the curves in Fig. 2. Thus the stress induced formation of any low energy martensite phase in any significant quantity must be ruled out. This observation is in accord with the X-ray findings of Otte.~ On the other hand, small quantities of the E phase have been observed by other investigators using transmission electron microscopy (TEM) above Even more significant was the fact that large numbers of deformation twins were observed in the deformed Hadfield steels,678 which were postulated to be one of the reasons for the high work hardening ability of this class of steels.8 It is the purpose in what follows to discuss a series of experimental observations pertaining to the stress induced transformation in a Hadfield steel and to formulate a dislocation mechanism which adequately accounts for the observed results. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE The stainless steel used to obtain the curves shown in Fig. 1 was of the AISI Type 303 containing approximately 18.0 pct Cr and 8 pct Ni. On the other hand, the Hadfield manganese steel used to obtain the curves shown in Fig. 2 contained between 1.00 to 1.25 pct and 11.5 to 13.5 pct Mn. In all cases the samples were in the form of compression cylinders 0.220 in. in diam and 0.370 in. long. Prior to testing the samples were annealed for a hr at 1050°C and rapidly quenched into a brine solution. This treatment was sufficient to preserve the y phase for subsequent testing at lower temperatures. All samples were compressed in an Instron testing machine using a cross head speed of 0.02 in.

IN reheating quenched steel to remove part of the hardness, the softening effect has generally been considered to be a function of temperature and time. The temperature effect is well known, and long before pyrometers were heard of the blacksmith was able to do a good job of tempering, by rule-of-thumb methods and experience in judging temperatures. Modern conditions, which demand steel that will withstand the severest tests, require that the heat treatment he carried out with every possible precaution to secure the best results obtainable. Pyrometers and heat-treatment furnaces of many types are on the market and improvements are continually being made so that it is now possible to regulate the temperature in heat treatment very accurately. There is -still a question regarding the time that the steel should be subjected to treatment. It is customary with all operators to insure the desired tem-pressure throughout the specimen and it is generally supposed that a longer treatment of a hardened steel produces a further softening but there are few published figures showing the exact effect of time of treat-ment at constant temperature. A search of the literature disclosed several brief statements that the tempering effect was a function of both time and temperature, but in no case were any figures given. The opinion is very generally held that the well-known tempering colors are accurate indicators of the degree of tempering. This is disputed by Brearley (The Heat Treatment of Tool Steel, page 102) who states: It has been said that the result would be the same in respect to both hardness and other properties whether the colors were obtained by a shorter heating at a higher temperature or a longer heating at a lower one. This, to say the least, is a very doubtful conclusion, and is certainly not borne out by mechanical tests on oil-hardened and tempered motor car steels, which, after tempering for periods varying from 15 min to 2 hr., show no very great differences. The present investigation had for its object the obtaining of some definite data regarding the effect of time, which might serve as a guide to those engaged in the heat treatment of steel. Application of computers to present-day open-pit mining with bucket wheel excavators (BWE) is discussed. The development of the wheel excavators and their use in mining are discussed along with the necessity for building a computer model of the bucket wheel and the mathematical formulation of the problem. The simulation procedure, testing the model, and test results are summarized. Even though the mining industry in 1966 produced more ore than ever before, current extraction rates are only a fraction of what is expected in the later years of the 20th century. Nearly 90% of all metals and mineral products consumed last year was recovered by open-pit mining. This has placed great pressure on this segment of the industry which has, consequently, resulted in some spectacular developments. With increasing size of projects, the need for increased sophistication of engineering, planning, management, and administration of modern mining installations has never become more apparent. The design of complete systems for the mine and plant that fit the mold of today&apos;s business and social environments is undergoing an evolutionary process. Traditional concepts in mine development and operations are being sidestepped in favor of new ideas and principles. As the overburden thickness increases, materials handling presents a major problem to mining companies, especially those concerned with the mass production of ore and waste from low-grade deposits. The profit margin here is likely to be significantly less as to take chances with capital investment. Constant efforts are needed to improve upon productivity if the ore is to be economically mined. The development of vast low-grade deposits and thick overburden deposits calls for better tools to handle the enormous amount of materials. A natural solution to this problem is the use of bucket wheel excavators (BWE), which employ a continuous cutting head to feed the materials handling system. High productivity, versatility, economy of operation, and adaptability to most types of haulage systems combine to make BWE&apos;s attractive for large earth-moving operations. "Operating costs are being pushed down by the impact of giant haulage units, by high-speed conveyors, and computerized railroads. Matching all these with the continuous output of BWEs, one can visualize increased production at much lower costs." Historical Background The wheel excavator, which was patented in Germany in 1913, made its first appearance in an open-pit lignite mine in 1920. From this early beginning, however, BWEs were slow coming into practice. Initial developments were dampened by many design problems. From 1936 onward, major developments in design improved the wheel&apos;s ability, capacity, and versatility. A literature survey shows that wheel excavators are being used in Australia, Zambia, South Africa, the Congo, India, Indonesia, Czechoslovakia, Russia, Great Britain, Guyana, Yugoslavia, Morocco, Germany, Canada, and the U.S. for mining and loading chalk, lignite, clay, sandstone, phosphate, broken ore of iron, coal, shale, loose and semi-loose rock overburden.&apos; A recent LMG* BWE at work in a German lignite mine weighs 6790 tons with an hourly capacity of 11,000 cu m. Although the BWE has wide applicability, its application to new mining areas poses a problem. Because of the large capital investment involved in BWE application and the narrow profit margins in mining low-grade ores or coal at depth, little margin of error can be tolerated in the selection, design, and operation of these machines. The questions that need to be answered prior to installation of a BWE for a mineable deposit are: 1.) What are the anticipated BWE performance characteristics? 2) Which method of BWE operation is most efficient? Attempts to answer these questions require a thorough knowledge of the mining system and the BWE operation. One approach is the building of a computer-ori-ented simulation model to determine how information and policy create the character of the BWE system under consideration. BWE Operation Modern BWEs generally excavate in blocks. Fig. la shows a BWE working in an established cut. The wheel is positioned to travel on the pit floor in line with the top edge of the old highwall. As it advances, a new highwall is exposed in the direction of excavation. Digging is done by rotating the wheel, swinging it from side to side in long parallel arcs, and "crowding" into the bank, by advancing the entire machine, or by the travel of the digging boom if an automatic crowd is available (Fig. lb). A second way by which the wheel can be advanced into the bank is by the falling cut method. A brief description of each of these methods follows. Cut with a Crowding Machine: At the end of every swing, the digging boom can be extended by the thickness of cut desired and the boom swung back in the reverse direction. Obviously, the thickness of bank excavated does not vary with the boom position; therefore, the slewing motion of the boom is fairly constant for uniform output. IT has been known for almost a century&apos; that silicon and nitrogen combine when heated to a high temperature. Three nitrides have been reported, SiN, Si3N,, and Si,N, containing 33.3, 40.0 and 42.9 pct nitrogen by weight, respectively.
