The great question of the economical production of good steel, ingot metal, or homogeneous iron (we scarcely know now what to call it) from good materials, and at reasonable prices, has, thanks to the intelligence and energy of a few American engineers, been successfully solved in this country. THE Pocahontas coal field comprises the area in Tazewell County, Va., and Mercer and McDowell Counties, W. Va., in which Nos. 3 and 4 Pocahontas seams of bituminous coal are mined. It is a mountainous region with ridges rising 300 to 1000 ft. (91 to 305m.) above the very narrow valleys and, except for some poorly kept farms along the tops of the ridges and the area occupied by the mining and coking plants and villages, is wooded throughout. First shipments were made from Pocahontas in 1883. There are now, about 100 mines, 95 per cent. of which are drift mines. At the end of 1920, approximately 298,000,000 gross tons of coal had been produced and 35,000 acres of coal mined. No. 3 seam is from 4 to 10 ft. (1.2 to 3 m.) thick, but the change is gradual and the thickness fairly uniform in any particular locality. It has a streak of bone, about 2 in. (5 cm.) thick, io which the coal adheres on both sides. In parts of the field this bone is replaced by hard slate, usually from 2 to 4 in. thick. The seam has a slate or fireclay bottom and a draw-slate top. No. 4 seam is from 65 to 80 ft. (19.8 to 24 m.) above No. 3 seam, and of minable section only in the western part of the field. It is from 3 to 8 ft. thick and has two streaks off bone, each from 1 to 2 in. thick. It has a fireclay or slate bottom and is overlaid by from 4 to 24 in. of a laminated coal and slate, locally termed "black rash," which is separated from the coal seam by about 3 in. of slate. This "black rash" averages about 25 per cent. ash, but contains some clean coal. The coal in both seams is quite soft. Cleavage sufficiently well defined to exert an influence on the mining is rare. Overlying strata are slates, shales, and sandstones, the sandstones predominating, extending from .30 to 1000 ft. above No. 3 seam. ACTIVITY on long-range and on immediate wartime problems shared the attention of specialists in coal research during 1943. Programs of the principal coal laboratories were more adequately financed than in previous years, but all reported shortages of technical personnel. Expansion in coal research in the year to come will depend primarily on the availability of qualified research talent.

PETROLEUM industry forecasts are constantly made and revised but are not in the nature of predictions. Particularly in the field of demand, many of the factors are far beyond control by the producing industry. Supply reacts on demand and demand reacts on supply. Competent economists in the oil business forecasted a year ago, on the basis of experience, that demand would now be at a much lower level than it is. This increased demand increased the price of crude oil and products, and in turn those increased prices have brought forth increased supply. A reduction in demand would lead to a reduction in supply. Shortages are now world-wide, and costs of secondary importance, so if there were extra supplies in California they would be moved into what are termed "unnatural markets." For example, Argentina is in the market today for California gasoline; that is an unnatural market because of the greater transportation distances from California to Argentina than from normal sources.

A nitride, believed to be Si3N, has been separated from three nitrided silicon steels. Germanium nitride, Ge3N4, has been prepared from pure germanium. Comparison of the diffraction patterns indicates that the two nitrides are isomorphous; on orthorhombic structure is suggested in place of the rhombohedral structure previously reported for Ge3N4. THE possibility that a nitride of silicon may, under appropriate conditions, precipitate in silicon steels or in steels killed with silicon makes it desirable to have some positive means of identifying such a compound. One such means is the X-ray or electron diffraction pattern of the nitride. A review of the meager data in the literature indicates that the nitride most likely to form is Si3N4, a conclusion supported by the results of a study of nitrided silicon steels to be published shortly by L. S. Darken and R. P. Smith, of this Laboratory. Unfortunately, there is available no diffraction pattern for this nitride. Data have been reported, however, for Ge3N4 which, judging from the similarity between germanium and silicon, might be expected to be isomorphous with Si3N4. An effort was made, therefore, to form such a silicon nitride, to determine its composition and diffraction pattern and, if possible, its structure. To this end a series of three silicon steels was nitrided under controlled conditions with the resultant formation of nitride particles which yielded an electron diffraction pattern in situ. The particles were then extracted from the steel and an attempt was made to determine their chemical composition. X-ray and electron diffraction patterns were also obtained from the extracted particles, which indicate that the nitride is isomorphous with Ge3N4, although a complete determination of the structure has not been possible. These results show that a silicon nitride with a well-defined diffraction pattern can form in silicon steels, and they suggest that this nitride is Si3N4. Materials and Procedures The sillicon steels investigated were In the form of thin sheet or strip and had the composition shown in Table I. The 0.58 and 1.21 pct Si steels were nitrided by holding them at 1110°F in an H2-NH3 atmosphere containing 3 pct ammonia for 48 hr. The nitride particle size was increased by subsequent heating at 1500°F for 13 1/2 hr in helium. The resulting microstructure is shown in Fig. 1. The steel containing 3.20 pct Si was nitrided at 1200°F for 16 1/2 hr after which it was held in helium at 1500°F for 4 hr. Its structure as seen under the electron microscope is illustrated by Fig. 2. As would be expected from the higher silicon content and the shorter holding time at 1500 °F, the nitride particles are smaller and more numerous than those in the 1.21 pct Si steel. The ammonia-hydrogen treatment reduced the carbon content of the steels to a very low level, so no interference was encountered from carbon or carbides. In the case of the 3.2 pct Si steel, the carbon was reduced to 0.003 pct before nitriding by heating in dry hydrogen. Attempts to obtain an X-ray diffraction pattern from polished and etched surfaces of the 1.21 and the 3.20 pct Si steels were unsuccessful. However, an electron diffraction pattern was obtained from the surface of the steels. The interplanar spacings obtained from these patterns arc shown in Table 11, col. 5. The nitride particles were then extracted from all three steels by dissolving the ferrite matrix in bromine-methyl acetate, the solution used in the Beeghly method for the extraction of aluminum nitride from steel. X-ray diffraction patterns of these residues, obtained by means of a spectrometer and by a 57 mm Debye-Scherrer powder camera using filtered cobalt or chromium radiation, are given in Table II along with the pattern obtained by

ThE thermodynamic activities of nickel and chromium in liquid Ni-Cr alloys have not been previously reported. There have been several investigations on the solid alloys.1-3 In the present investigation the activity of chromium in liquid Ni-Cr alloys at 1600° C was determined by the use of the following galvanic cell, The use of galvanic cells employing solid oxide electrolytes for determining the activity of metals in solid alloys was first demonstrated by Rapp and Maak4 on Cu-Ni alloys between 700° and 1000°C. Recently Schwerdtfeger5 tested the performance of the ZrO2(CaO) electrolyte at 1600°C and found it satisfactory for oxygen pressures as low as 10"12 atm. He also demonstrated the use of solid oxide electrolytes for determining the activities in liquid metal systems in measuring the activity of manganese in Fe-Mn alloys at 1500°C. Extensive investigations have been carried out in this laboratory, exploring the oxygen partial pressure lower limit at which ZrO2(CaO) electrolyte can be used satisfactorily in oxygen galvanic cells at 1600°C. In a paper to be published at a later date,9 it is demonstrated conclusively that ZrO2(CaO) exhibits insignificant electronic conductivity at oxygen pressures down to about 3 x 10"13 atm which is lower than the oxygen partial pressure in equilibrium with Cr-Cr2O3 at 1600°C. Therefore, the activity of chromium can be related to the measured reversible electromotive force of the cell in the present investigation since no electronic short circulating will occur. Fig. 1 is a schematic diagram of the cell used. The Cr-Cr2O3 electrode was made of equal weights of chromium and Cr2O3 powders which were mixed and packed into a recrystallized alumina crucible. A Pt-wire lead was embedded into the Cr-Cr2O3 compact to insure good contact. A ZrO2(CaO) crucible, supplied by the Zirconium Corp. of America, contained the Ni-Cr melt equilibrated with solid Cr2O3. The ZrO2(CaO) crucible was placed on the Cr-Cr2O3 electrode and additional Cr-Cr2O3 mixture was packed around it. Contact with the Ni-Cr alloy was made with a Cr2O3 tube, which is a weak electronic conductor. A platinum wire lead was attached to the Cr2O3 tube. The galvanic cell was lowered slowly into the hot zone of the furnace tube in order to avoid too large a thermal shock which could break the ZrO2 (CaO) crucible. The furnace was con- tinuously flushed with purified argon during the experiment. The temperature was measured with a Pt-Pt/10 pet Rh thermocouple and maintained at 1600° ± 5°C. The electromotive force was measured with a recording potentiometer. The furnace was turned off when measurements were being made in order to avoid induction effects and the reversibility of the cell was demonstrated in the usual manner. The electromotive force was measured several times over a period of approximately 1 hr. During that period the electromotive force remained constant within ± 3 pet and did not continuously drift in any one direction. After the experiment the alloys were analyzed for chromium in the usual manner. The measured electromotive forces of the cell at 1600°C, (2912°F), are listed in Table I. The activity of chromium, with solid pure chromium as the reference state, (a), was calculated using Eq. [l], , n F E I, n lna RT- U] where E is the measured electromotive force, F is the Faraday constant, and n is equal to 3, the number of equivalents per mole, (nF/RT = 18.59 volts'1 at 1600°C). The reduction of iron oxide, such as Fe203, to iron in the blast furnace is performed principally by carbon monoxide, but partly by solid carbon by the two following reactions: Fe2O3 + 3CO = 2Fe 4- 3CO2 2Fe2O3 + 3C = 4Fe + 3CO2 It is known that reduction by carbon monoxide takes place at a much lower temperature than reduction by carbon and that the reducing action of earbon monoxide progresses to the inside of the ore in lump form by gaseous diffusion. In the reduction by carbon, however, the reducing action takes place only at the contact surface of the ore and carbon, so that the more complete the reduction by carbon monoxide, the more efficient is the operation. However, the reduction does not progress as shown in the foregoing equation, because carbon dioxide acts oxidizingly on the metallic iron to such a degree that when the gaseous composition reaches a certain proportion of carbon dioxide to carbon monoxide, the reduction practically stops, even though the gases are moving slowly through the heated ore. The proportions of carbon monoxide and carbon dioxide in the gas depend on the kind of iron oxide and the temperature of reduction, also on the duration of time in the reaction. The longer the time of the reaction, the higher the proportion of carbon dioxide obtained in the gas, but finally it will attain to a condition of equilibrium. FABRICATORS of copper and copper alloys have contended with the problems of reconversion during the past year in endeavoring to return to the full-scale production that is demanded of them. The problems have not been easy, for the industry, like so many others, has had to deal with strikes of long duration, and material shortages, particularly in the raw materials, copper, zinc, lead, and tin. Despite all these obstacles, it was possible to gear production to new peacetime records during the latter part of the year. This was made possible not only by the use of multiple shifts of personnel, but also by the improved production equipment, the development of which had been stimulated by wartime necessity. The work of installing new and better equipment is still continuing, and virtually every company is engaged in improving or planning to improve its processes.

AT first sight, the platinum group of metals seem of little import to we, the people," although actually the life of the common man is much influenced by them; this influence is usually indirect, hence his lack of knowledge and interest. He generally associates platinum with high-class jewelry and lets it go at that. Were 11e to go deeper, he would find that platinum metals play their part in his food supply, his clothing. his health, his transportation, his home. And the technical man is in general only slightly better informed, for he usually does not realize how necessary platinum metals are in the manufacture of the many construction materials and chemical products with which he is acquainted. Certainly, our daily lives would be profoundly affected if platinum were suddenly to become unavailable.

A NEW LINE of specialists has arisen as a result of the trend toward labor socialization and collectivism in all branches of industry. These men are the ones who will govern the destiny of many companies and the labor policy of our government in coming years. They must be men of integrity and of rather exceptional qualifications; men who can foresee the trend of labor relations with business, and who are willing to sacrifice the immediate fruits of technical training for manual labor and study. They must take their place in industry, not with the idea of following the orthodox line of advancement, but knowing that they must stay at the bottom until they have learned to understand the viewpoints, the work, the advantages and the disadvantages of each classification of labor. They must not be of a radical nature or become easily biased, and they must study. You will say I am looking for a superman and in one sense that is true, but the business man and our government are both in the market even now for this type of man, and with the proper training and background, many of our young technicians can readily enter this field of work.

The melting points of mixtures of titanium dioxide and other titanates have been reported to a limited extent as binary systems and some results have been reported in conjunction with silicon dioxide. The limited data indicated that a low melting zone might exist in a ternary or quarternary system of CaO-MgO-TiO2-Al2O3, since the eutectics reported in the binary systems of MgO.TiO2-TiO2, Al2O3TiO2-TiO2 and CaO.TiO2-TiO2 were of about equivalent composition of TiO2. The importance of a low melting region with a high titanium oxide value in the developing of high titanium slags is fully appreciated by metallurgists. A comprehensive study was undertaken to establish basic information on low melting titanate mixtures. Compounds in the System CaO-MgO-TiO2 -Al2O3 Preparation of the titanates of CaO, MgO and Al2O3 confirmed reported data that the following compounds could be formed under oxidizing conditions in solid state reactions: CaO.TiO2, 2MgO.TiO2, MgO.TiO2, MgO-2TiO2 and Al2O3.TiO2. Under oxidizing conditions it was not possible to react MgO with TiO2 in mol ratios higher than 1:2 without having unreacted TiO2 in the product, nor was it possible to form calcium or aluminum titanates with a higher mol ratio of CaO and A12O3 to TiO2 than 1:1. By fusing mixtures of Al2O3-TiO2 and MgO-2TiO2 together a series of solid solution products were obtained, which showed an MgO-2TiO2 X ray diffraction pattern shifted to smaller inter-planar spacings. Range of Investigation Data in the literature1 indicated that these titanates had melting points which ranged from 1645 to 1860°C. Since the purpose of the study was primarily to provide useful data for smelting titaniferous ores, the work was restricted to the zone of the system which would include the crystalline phases present in the slags. The explored limits were bounded by CaO.-TiO2-MgO.TiO2-TiO2in the base plane. The system was extended to a fourth component Al2O3-TiO2 since many titaniferous ores contain appreciable amounts of A12O3. In the quarternary system CaO-TiO2-MgOTiO2-TiO2-Al2O3TiO2, a tetrahedron was used to represent graphically the components, with one component at each point of the tetrahedron. In the base plane, mixtures were pre- pared to represent fairly uniform changes of composition over the desired range expressed on a mol percent basis. Al2O3-TiO2 was brought into the system in increments of 10 mol pct up to 40 pct. Mixtures were then made up for each of the Al2O3-TiO2 planes. The ranges employed were then represented by five planes cutting the tetrahedron at 10 mol pct Al2O3-TiO2 intervals. Choice of Equipment Although it was necessary for all smelting work to be done in a strongly reducing atmosphere, it was decided that all melting point determinations should be done under oxidizing conditions. This decision was prompted by the fact that TiO2 reduced to lower oxides in a reducing atmosphere with consequent changes in melting points. The use of a micropyrometer and a platinum strip furnace for work of this type is adequately described in the literature.2 With modifications, equipment was selected which provided a fairly rapid method of determining melting points of refractory oxides. The final assembly, which was used, consisted of a platinum strip furnace and a Leeds and Northrup disappearing filament optical pyrometer attached to a special telescope which magnified the sample about 20 diam. The furnace assembly consisted of a platinum strip 0.005 X 0.3 X 2.2 in. mounted on brass posts on a refractory base. This was enclosed in a black steel shell which had a 2-in. opening at the top for purposes of sighting the telescope. The platinum strip was in series with two 0.04 ohm nichrome resistors connected to the secondary of a 2 kw transformer which supplied 17 volts. The current to the primary was varied

IN the recent world-wide deflation of commodity prices the coal industry, including both anthracite and bituminous coal, had reached a level where the actual delivered market prices received by the operators were usually less than the cost of production. Many steel companies and public utilities, operating their own "captive" mines, could have bought coal during the past three years for less money than the true cost of coal produced at their own properties. Competition within the coal industry itself was cruel to the point of profitless operation, and the competition of other forms of fuel was bearing heavily on the coal producers. They were thus forced into methods of production and utilization that they had hitherto ignored; there had been almost complete absence of any appreciation (by the bituminous operators especially) of the necessity of real research work in finding better methods of preparing coal for specific uses, and in finding new and profitable uses for different kinds and grades of coal.

TWENTY-FIVE years ago the training of an engineer was of interest solely to the educator and to the student entering the field. At that time the engineer's position in society was relatively simple. His training emphasized design and operation and he expected to enter industry to handle the engineering problems of raw materials production, mechanical and product design, and the operation of power plants, factories, transportation and communication systems, and similar phases of industrial activity. He was not concerned with or particularly interested in the problems of management, administration, sales, publicity, industrial relations, or of legislation. To a large degree he was content to leave these matters to self-made businessmen, or men trained in law, finance, or commerce. That period in the evolution of the engineer is now history. It is generally conceded that the modern world is dependent upon engineering technology for its day-to-day survival. The continued operation of facilities on which mankind relies is dependent upon the functioning of mines, utilities, chemical plants, and other factories, all of which require the knowledge and the skills of trained engineers. The stoichiometry, structure, and stability of the internzediate phases formed between zinc and some of the rare earth (RE) metals were systematically exarnined by means of a recording effusion balance and X-ray diffraction analyses. In the La-, Ce-, PY-, Nd-, and Y-Zu systems, at or below about 600 C, the following sequences of phases (REZnx) were found: La, x = 1, 2, 4.0, 5.25, 7.3, 17/2, 11, and 13.0;' Ce, x = 1, 2, 3, 11/3, 4.3, 5.25, 7.0, 17/2,* and 11; Pr,x = 1,2, 3, 11/3 ,* 4.3, 5.3(?), 7.0, 17/2,* and 11; Nd,x = 1,2, 3,* 11/3,* 4.3, 6.5, 8.5,* and 11; Y,x = 1,2,3, 11/3, 4.5, 5.0, 17/2,* and 12.* The structure types of all these phases were classified. In addition, lattice parameters were obtained for the first time for the pluses denoted by asterisks. In the absence of de tectable valency or electronegativity effects the systesnatic trends in the results have been ascribed to the effects of' the lanthanide contraction. For example, the maximum number of zinc atoms in the coordination polyhedron surrounding the RE atom decreases from twenty-four to twenty-two to twenty as the size of the RE atom decreases. THE structures and compositions of a great many intermetallic phases (e.g., the Laves phases) are known to be based primarily, but not exclusively, on the space-filling efficiency of various modes of packing together atoms of different sizes. The valencies and electronegativities of the constituent atoms are, however, also influential. In extreme cases hypothetical intermetallic phases which fulfill the efficient spacefilling requirements may not be present in the constitutional diagram because of thermodynamic instability brought about by the operation of valency or electronegativity factors. Hence, for a detailed study of the influence of atomic size on alloy structure and composition, it would be desirable to minimize variations of valency and electronegativity. The intermetallic phases formed by the rave earths (RE) with some common partner offer an excellent opportunity for isolating the effects of size from those of valency and electronegativity. The rare earths exhibit a large, but smooth, decrease in size (the lanthanide contraction) in the series from lanthanum to lutetium when inter comparison is made for a common valence state, e.g., isolated atoms or trivalent ions. The elements yttrium and scandium are frequently included as pseudo rare earths; their sizes place them in the vicinity of dysprosium and lutetium, respectively. The electronegativities of RE elements vary by less than 10 pet. The trivalent state is the most common; however, the well-known tendency of cerium, praseodymium, and terbium to achieve higher valencies, and of samarium, europium, and ytterbium to seek lower valencies, requires that caution be exercised in the assumption of equal valencies. In the present study the existence, constitution, and structure of each of the numerous intermediate phases formed by zinc with lanthanum, cerium, praseodymium, neodymium, or yttrium were examined systematically and in detail. The investigation was conducted by a recording effusion balance technique and by X-ray diffraction analysis. The results enrich our knowledge of the phase diagrams of these systems. In addition, they present some clear-cut evidences of the operation of the size factor alone. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE Apparatus. The mode of operation of the recording effusion balance and its application to phase studies have been discussed in detail elsewhere.' In this work, an effusion cell containing a finely divided alloy was suspended within an evacuated tube from the beam of an analytical balance. The tube was immersed in a massive molten salt bath whose temperature was controlled to within 0.5o C during each experiment. The loss in weight of the alloy owing to effusion of zinc* was continuously recorded. Two effusion cells, 1/2 in. diam by 1 in. high, were machined from tantalum rods. Two orifices were drilled laterally into the walls of each cell. The orifice areas were determined by calibration with pure zinc: cell A had a total orifice area of 6.5 x 10-41 sq cm, and cell B an orifice area of 9.8 x 10-3 sq cm. By appropriate choices of orifice area and temperature the wide range of volatilities from pure zinc to pure rare earth metal could be investigated. X-ray diffraction powder photographs were made at room temperature with a 114.6-mm Debye-Scherrer camera with both filtered CuKa radiation and filtered CrKa radiation. Lattice parameters were refined by a computer-programmed least-squares analytical treatment which incorporated appropriate extrapolation techniques.2 Frequent use was also made of a special computer program3 designed to generate a powder pattern from an assumed structure in order to verify structural assignments. WHEN I was asked to speak on the subject of leaching, I did not realize that a complete summary of recent progress in leaching had been given by Stuart Croasdale. I shall try to give some other phases of the subject that were not touched by Mr. Croasdale. Not all metallurgists are in harmony as to their methods of treating metals. If they were it would probably mean lack of progress. They can be divided into two classes-the pyrometallurgists, using fire means, and the hydrometallurgists, or those using leaching methods. Conflict is always good for progress; we have it in politics, and in religion there are fundamentalists, and those who are not fundamentalists. As representing pyrometallurgy, may I hope not to be classed among the fundamentalists. The leaching of ores is not new. The leaching of ores for the recovery of metals, however, is quite new. The older leaching was simply to recover the salts. Agricola, back in 1555, I think it was, outlined a great many methods of leaching for the recovery of salts.
