The ease and value of the application of spectrum analysis to industrial chemistry appears to be appreciated in few of the large works laboratories of this country. For 8 years, this analysis has been of great value to the authors in both analytical and metallurgical work. To the analyst the complete qualitative analysis of an unknown alloy, revealed by a spectrogram, is a sure basis for the planning of the most direct and rapid method of attack. As the determination of each element proceeds, the purity of precipitates may be checked as often as desired. The spectrograph proves invaluable in the recognition of impurities, the separation of which would entail a lengthy and difficult procedure, or when the weight of an unknown is less than is necessary to complete the desired determinations. A few hundredths of a gram will usually suffice for spectrographic analysis. In the separation of the rarer elements, the spectrograph will show, with precision, the point where each step has been successful. In zinc of certain classes, indium, gallium, and germanium have been isolated in this way; the presence of antimony in lake coppers has been proved; and bismuth has been detected in zinc and in alloys where the presence of a few thousandths of a per cent. would be harmful. An antimony precipitate in a delicate determination may contain a considerable proportion of tin or arsenic, both of which will be revealed. The spectrograph is consequently important to the metallurgist as well as to the analyst. Impurities in raw material are often a source of annoyance, especially when their detection involves delay and costly analytical work. Whethcr low conductivity in copper is due to arsenic, nickel, or something else may be cluickly found out. Residual traces of boron, magnesium, manganese, silicon, vanadium, and other deoxidizing agents are easily identified where wet analysis may fail to reveal their presence, even after days of effort. Laboratory data .show that the gas-oil ratio performance of non-uniform porosity limestones produced by solution gas drive is sensitive to producing rate and to fluid properties. Nan-uniform porosity limestones are those for which laboratcry solution and external gas drive tests yield considerably different relative permeability ratio characterislics. The oil recovery performance by solution gas drive depends directly on the number of gas bubbles formed. Laboratory rates of pressure decline, which are 100 to 10,000 times greater than normal field rates. cause the formation of an unusually large number of gas bubbles. This results in abnormally high oil recovery efficiencies. Since it is impractical to reproduce the number of bubbles formed under field conditions, laboratory solution gas drive data on non-uniform porosity limestones are therefore not directly applicable to field operations. However, certain laboratory data can be used to make a conservative estimate of field performance. The concepts presented in this paper indicate the possibility that increased field oil recoveries may he obtained from non-uniform porosity limestones by rap- idly reducing reservoir pressure for a short interval of time. It has yet to be established that significant improvements in oil recovery from such reservoirs can he realized by varying the pressure decline rate within limits possible in the field. However, the possibility that recovery may be increased in this manner warrants further study. INTRODUCTION Limestone reservoir rocks can be divided into two general classes according to the nature of their pore space. One class has a comparatively uniform pore system composed mainly of voids between grains of the rock (intergranular type porosity). The other class, in addition to having intergranular porosity, has a secondary pore system composed of combinations of solution cavities, fractures, etc., and is considered to have non-uniform porosity. It has been shown in a previous publication' that the laboratory measured gas-oil flow behavior of uniform type porosity limestones is essentially the same for a test simulating a field solution gas drive as for one simulating an external gas drive. SUMMARY Statistics on roof falls indicate that the cost of just removing the unwanted waste from roof falls in US coal mines amounts to about $20 M per year. Almost 40 percent of fatal accidents occur under permanently supported roofs, indicating that the assessment of roof stability is still a very difficult task. In an effort to obtain a better understanding of roof fall occurrences, rock strength and ground stresses were determined in the roof of one mine each in Western Kentucky, northern West Virginia, and Eastern Kentucky. Triaxial ground stress determinations clearly show that horizontal stresses were higher than vertical stresses, and that maximum stresses in the horizontal plane were concentrated between the NE-SW to E-W direction, with the exception of the Eastern Kentucky site which was above the drainage. Magnitudes of stress components may vary considerably in one drlll hole. Strength tests of roof strata materials were done on core samples. Mapping of roof falls showed that the geometry of an opening or maximum span were not the overruling factor because in the same general area, a roof fall was observed in a room (entry) which connected two stable four-way intersections. It should be noted that, in very wet areas, the roof can break up to the bed where water is carried, and a very low ratio between extent of roof fall to height of roof, fall is observed. Geometry is, however, a contributing factor because nearly 70 percent of roof falls are intersection falls. The frequency of fractures parallel to bedding in failed roof strata is much higher than that observed in the original strata, indicating a significant amount of working in the roof before failure.

Mine opening stability was investigated by loading model openings to failure. Eight-inch plaster blocks were cast with small uniform section openings passing through the centers. After curing, the models were jacketed and loaded hydrostatically in a closed vessel. Opening size, shape, and orientation were varied to determine how these factors influence opening stability. THE investigation described in this paper is a continuation of a project begun in 1946 by Bernard York and W. E. Bush. .The experimental method used in the investigation involves the hydrostatic loading of a model mine opening to failure. Most investigators agree that this loading closely approaches actual conditions in very deep mines. The conditions are further idealized by using an essentially isotropic model material. The experiments consist of casting 8-in. plaster cubes, or 8-in. diam cylinders 8-in. long, having a relatively small uniform section hole passing through their centers. After thorough drying, the models are jacketed in a flexible plastic bag and loaded hydrostatically with water in a closed vessel. At about 300 to 500 lb per sq in. pressure the central opening fails. The fracture pattern resulting from opening failure is studied in a plane normal to the longitudinal axis of the opening. The model block is sawed through its center after loading to expose this plane and to eliminate the possibility of end effect. By changing

Seven years ago, Dr. S. L. Hoytl presented a masterful discussion of the hard metal carbides and cemented tungsten carbide. His lecture summarized most of the data then available in the field; many of the details relating to the production, properties and structure of cemented tungsten carbide had never been previously published, for, in fact, this information was only then being acquired. During the intervening years, the cemented carbides have assumed a place of real importance in the commercial field, with an ever widening variety of applications due to constant improvement in the control of production technique and the unremitting search for new compositions that might better the performance of the alloys in one or another type of service. The most recent summary of production methods, properties and guides for the successful application of the cemented carbides appears in the 1936 edition of the Metals Handbook. Of necessity, much detailed information relating to structures and physical properties is not included in such a summary, and it is with such details that the present discussion is concerned. Steps in Preparation While the past 25 years have contributed a valuable store of working knowledge in the field of powder metallurgy, many of the process controls are derived entirely from experience and are not as yet finally explained by a specific physical or chemical phenomenon. For most of the cemented carbides such difficulties are aggravated by our lack of knowledge not only of the complex alloy systems involved, but also by the possible changes in structure and even in composition which may accompany variations in temperature, heating time, and furnace atmospheres. The principal steps in the preparation of these cemented carbide alloys are fairly well known, but to supply a foundation for discussion these steps are briefly outlined as follows : 1. In 1923 a Western mining company was experimenting with the device of an inventor designed to locate buried ores by radio. Because the progress was slow and the results were confusing, the company began to doubt the usefulness of the method and invited me to review the whole question of the application of physics to ore detection. I was fortunate in securing the cooperation of several physicists who had worked with me during the war on the problem of submarine detection. This group has been increased and has been studying the problem of physical exploration for ores since that time. It was evident that the problem is a big one, with many angles of approach. Its general features may be set down, in rough outline, as follows: The soils, rocks and ores hidden beneath the surface differ one from another in many respects. These differences may be made to furnish a clew for the physicists working from the surface. To bring these differences into action the physicist creates some kind of an effect which penetrates into the ground and is distorted and reflected when it meets boundaries between different sorts of underground structure. In other words, he sends a message down, and the rocks and ore send back signals in reply. In picturing this process, we should not regard the ground as dense and impenetrable. The kind of messages used pass through the earth about as readily as a sound wave travels the air. If, then, the fundamental procedure is to shout down questions in the hope that an orebody will hear and answer back to us, it is clear that a large part of the expert's study must relate to the kind of questions best suited to the temperament and intelligence of orebodies. It will be easier for the ore to reply to some of our questions than to others, and it is for us to find the right questions. In certain cases, we are spared the necessity of using a messenger, because nature has already provided one. For example, we already have a terrestrial magnetic field which automatically and continually conveys messages from underneath. The chemical action of molten anhydrous pyridinium chloride (pyridine hydrochloride) on oxy salts and ores of some Group IV and V metals are discussed-in particular zirconium, hafnium, niobium (columbium) , and tantalum. Laboratory-scale experiments are described whose results suggest that this reaction might provide a practicable means of converting ores of these metals to the anhydrous metal chlorides. Experimental results are given which provide some insight into the nature of the reactions and some of the compounds which could be present at intermediate stages. The treatment of ores of the more refractory metals is difficult and expensive and often demands the use of gaseous chlorine, hydrogen fluoride, or other reagents which are, if nothing else, expensive and dangerous to use. This situation is, of course, due to the strong metal-oxygen affinity resulting from the high charge and the small size of the metal ion which combine to produce such high lattice energy in the metal oxide as to defeat standard reduction methods. Thus, the characteristic of these metals which leads to one of their most important properties—corrosion resistance—is the main hurdle in obtaining the metal. Many common methods' for treating ores of zirconium and niobium (columbium), for example, proceed as directly as possible to the preparation of anhydrous halides. These halides are purified by now standard processes of solvent extraction, fractional distillation, and so on. This paper reports on preliminary stages in the development of a method of treating these ores—particularly of niobium—so as to prepare the anhydrous, volatile halides by the use of chemical reagents which are much more easily handled than those used at present. CHEMICAL PRINCIPLES The solvent action of aminium halides has been referred to periodically in the literature over several decades. The chemistry of pyridinium chloride has been discussed particularly by Audreith2 and Starke.3 However, since this is not familiar chemistry in its nonaqueous setting, it is perhaps well to point out some general metallurgical principles and applications. One can use, as point of departure, the fact that HC1 dissolved in pyridine is an acid very much the same as aqueous HC1. It thus gives essentially all the reactions of the HC1 with which we are familiar. However, when the ratio of HC1:pyridine reaches 1:l (a ratio far higher than is possible with H2O) the solution becomes solid C5F5NHC1, pyridinium chloride.* Inter- estingly, the acidic properties of HC1 persist in this medium, although they are manifest only in the molten state of the compound. Some typical reactions of divalent metal compounds which we have carried out in our laboratories are the following: 2PyHCl + Zn — (ZnCl2) + H2 + 2Py 2PyHCl + MnO — (MnCl2) + H2O + 2Py 2PyHCl + CuS — (CuCl2) + H2S + 2Py 2PyHCl + CaCO3 — (CaCl2) + H2O + CO2 + 2Py In these equations, the parentheses indicate a solvated compound which in water would be predominantly a hydra ted cation but which in molten PyHCl will more likely be a complex chloro-anion of the type MC14-. Some important physical properties of pyridinium chloride (PyHCl) are given in Table I. One sees from the data in Table I that at the temperature of molten pyridinium chloride both water and pyridine will boil away. Thus the system will be kept anhydrous. For this reason the reaction 2NbCl5 + 5H2O— Nb2O5 + 10HC1 has no counterpart in molten PyHCl. Instead, the chloride is made even more stable by the formation of a hexachloro complex: Nb2O5 + 12PyHC1 — 2PyHNbC16 + 5H2O + 10Py One interesting property of these complexes is their thermal instability which for the case of niobium can be illustrated as PyHNbCl6 — PyHCl + NbCl5 With a view to possible use of this chemistry in ore treatment, we have attempted to dissolve Pyrochlore (essentially FeO - Nb2O5) and recover the NbC15 from it.

A theoretical investigation has been made of the forward combustion process using a one-dimensional linear mathematical model, taking into consideration the effect of the vaporization-condensation which occurs on the leading edge of the heat wave. This work involves the solution of five coupled partial differential equations. Besides the vaporization-condensation phenomenon, these equations account for conduction, convection, combustion, heat loss, diffusion and bulk fluid flow. For the one-dimensional linear model studied, the vaporization-condensation phenomenon does not induce appreciable change in the temperature at the combustion front; and its primary effect is to create a steam plateau and to increase the length of the heated zone ahead of the combustion front. This effect becomes more pronounced at lower pressures, higher porosities or reduced gas saturations. The peak temperature and the temperature profile on the leading edge of the heat wave stabilize after a certain period. The length of the steam bank remains practically constant, although the length of the water bank increases as the heat wave advances. INTRODUCTION The existence of the vaporization-condensation phenomenon in the heat-wave process and the important role played by the phenomenon have been recognized by several investigators. Kuhn and Kochl stated that steam plateaus were frequently observed on the temperature records of their experiments. The steam plateaus were attributed primarily to the vaporization and subsequent condensation of the interstitial water existing in the oil sand. Szasz2 suggested that both lighter hydrocarbons and water are vaporized on the leading edge of the heat wave, carried forward in the gas stream, and then condensed to create banks of oil and water. Martin et al suggested that the vaporization-condensation phenomenon is one of the main mechanisms of the heat-wave process, along with thermal expansion and viscosity reduction. Wilson et al. reported the existence of a steam plateau several inches in length in their small-scale tube-run experiments. However, this important phenomenon has never been taken into consideration in the numerous theoretical analyses by various authors. 5 The purpose of this work was to study the thermal aspects of a linear heat wave, taking into consideration the vaporization-condensation on the leading edge of the wave, to determine the effect of this phenomenon on the temperature profile of the reservoir, and to investigate how this effect varies when other process variables are changed. THEORY We consider a reservoir of porous medium of cross-sectional area A, extending from x = 0 to x = L. This reservoir contains, aside from the solid matrix itself, a gas phase and a "combined liquid phase" which is a combination of two immiscible liquid phases — namely, an oil phase and a water phase. The oil present in the reservoir is assumed to consist of three fractions, a noncondensable gas, a nondistillable residuum, and a vaporizable oil fraction which may be present in both the gas phase and liquid phase. Before the heat-wave process begins, preheating has taken place and has imparted an initial temperature distribution T,(x) to the reservoir. At the start of the process, a stream of oxygen-bearing gas is introduced through the face at x = 0. This gas supports the combustion of the residual fuel and supplies the heat throughout the process. In order to develop a tractable system of equations, the model properties are postulated as follows: (1) the system is isotropic and homogeneous; (2) there is a uniform fuel content throughout the reservoir; (3) combustion takes place in a moving vertical planar region of infinitesimal thickness; (4) the temperatures of the fluids and the solid matrix are identical; (5) radiation is negligible; (6) the gas and liquid saturations are uniform throughout the reservoir and remain unchanged

The behavior of steel after overstrain and at moderate temperatures is fairly well known. It has been made the subject of much investigation, and our knowledge is clear and definite on many points. The ultimate raising of the elastic limit, after moderate overstrain, and the consequent lowering of the ductility, seem to be well established. It is also well understood that the immediate effect of overstrain is to lower the elastic limit, possibly to zero, but that if not interfered with, this limit will subsequently rise higher than before. The " tests after moderate temperature," reported in this paper, were undertaken to verify the above statements for the particular steel under investigation, and also to determine, if possible, the total time required for complete recovery from this state of overstrain. The behavior of overstrained steel at temperatures at or below 32" F. is not so well known. Tests made by Prof. E. G. Coker, at McGill University,' show that steel, overstrained and subjected to cold, will remain in a state of overstrain for an indefinite period. I am not aware of any other published results of tests along this particular line. The effect of time and temperature on the recovery of steel from overstrain was made in 1902-3 the subject of some investigation in the laboratories of the College of Civil Engineering of Cornell University. A general plan was outlined in connection with the regular courses of instruction in testing of materials; but the press of routine work and the demands of the schedules on the time of the students were so great as to presage long delay in the completion of the work. INTRODUCTION Though the use of continuous mining machines consolidated the operations of cutting, drilling, blasting, and loading in one machine that would theoretically provide uninterrupted production, it was soon realized that the face haulage and roof support operations remained as major impediments to continuous production. The ability to provide not only continuous cutting and loading, but also continuous haulage and roof support (see Fig. I), was the basis for the introduction of mechanized longwall systems in this country from Europe in 1951. The early systems employed friction props for roof support, but were to become obsolete shortly after introduction of the first hydraulically powered, self-advancing supports in 1960. Since then, use of the longwall technique has grown to the point where it is currently providing more than 5% of the annual output of underground coal mines in the United States. The shortwall system had its origin in Australia, but was first introduced into this country in 1962 following the development of powered roof supports. It, too, provides for continuous cutting, loading, and roof support (see Fig. 2), but has not experienced the widespread popularity of longwall due to its inherent inability to easily provide for continuous haulage. While there are in the neighborhood of 100 longwall systems currently in operation in this country, there are only a handful of short- wall operations providing production of slightly more than 907 184.7 t/a (1,000,000 stpy) Both of these systems provide uninterrupted roof support for face operations by means of hydraulically powered steel roof supports. In each case, the coal removal consists of open-end cuts made from the narrow end of a large rectangular pillar (panel) which has been blocked out by continuous miners developing entries around its perimeter. The first undercutting machine to operate in anthracite was placed in the Butler mine of the Hillside Coal and Iron Co., Dec. 23, 1910, by the Sullivan Machinery Co. The first Jackhamer used in the anthracite field was installed at the Wadesville colliery of the Philadelphia & Reading Coal and Iron Co. in Oct., 1912, by the Ingersoll-Rand Co. The first longwall conveyor was installed at the Dodge mines of the Delaware, Lackawanna, & Western Coal Co. in March, 1912. The first mechanical scraper equipment was installed in the Seneca mines of the Lehigh Valley Coal Co. in January, 1914. 1 Raw coal from Truax-Traer Coal Co.'s Burning Star Slope mine, Jackson County, Ill., is brought to the surface by the new 42-in. slope belt haulage conveyor at the rate of 850 tph. The loading system shown above employs four storage tracks, two tail tracks for loading, and four 25-hp hoists, operating in pairs, and coupled to two dolly cars to move the trains of cars through the tipple. The system has a capacity for loading 1800 tph. One operator is needed to load on each of two shifts. A third man working for a few hours on night shift sets up for the morning cycle. Railroad crews bring in empties placing them in the storage yard, twenty cars to the track. Trains of empties are pulled through to the tail track and loaded on the return; hoists at opposite ends pull the trains in each direction. [ ] 2 Pairs of hoist drums are interconnected electric- ally by a Trench lay cable buried between the tracks. When one hoist operates moving the cars, the tail hoist idles with brake released. The operator, situated in the tipple over the cars, views the storage yard at the end of the first shift (left). When returning loaded cars to yard, four or five cars are held on the dolly to couple the next string of empties. Empties are ready for loading on the tail track (right). Differing from a gravity system in which empty and load tracks are on a slight grade, this system is designed for 80 railroad cars for a two-shift operation and one rail service per day.

A five-year effort by the ASTM subcommittee E10.14 on uranium resource evaluation has culminated in the approval of E901-82, Classification System for Uranium Resources (ASTM Standard E901-82, April 1983). The standard classification was prepared with participation of representatives from the US Department of Energy, the US Department of Interior's Geological Survey and Bureau Mines, utilities, and consultants. The classification a resource is based on level of knowledge and the economic producibility of the resource at a given time. Alphanumeric identifiers are used rather than words to avoid confusion with existing terms, definitions, and classifications. An example demonstrates the dynamic nature of the process of classification and attests to the necessity of addressing both the aggregate needs of broad-scale resource planning and the specific needs of individual property evaluation. Problems that remain infixing the classification a given uranium resource include uncertainty in estimating the quantity of undiscovered resources and resolving differences that may exist in deciding when the drill-hole spacing is adequate to determine the tonnage and grade of discovered resources.

Shortly after production was begun at the Duval Sierrita concentrator in February 1970, it became evident that difficulties would be experienced in reaching the designed operating level of 72,000 stpd. Since the major restrictions to production resided in the reduction crushing system, a comprehensive program was initiated to evaluate and optimize all crusher parameters affecting production. Positive relationships were established between production rate and crusher power draught, mantle support pressure, crusher setting, and crusher throw. Other parameters evaluated were the effects of feed distribution, crusher speed, mantle and concave configuration, choke feeding, and ore type. In order to obtain maximum production, it was also imperative that the mechanical integrity of the crushers be improved. Therefore, redesign of nearly the entire crusher assemblage, including such items as the top shell, bushings, and the mantle hydraulic support system, was required. In addition, automatic control stategies were evaluated and detailed operating guidelines were established. As a result of this extensive crusher examination, the limitation on plant throughput has been shifted to the grinding section, and a monthly average production level of 86,000 stpd is currently achieved. Programs under current evaluation are aimed at further increasing capacity to exceed 90,000 stpd.

Tantalum Mining Corporation of Canada Limited has been mining tantalum ore from the Bernic Lake pegmatite dyke since 1968. The shallow nature of the dyke and relatively high strengths of the various rock types led to the choice of a room and pillar mining method. Rock mechanic studies have indicated that the original pillar dimensions of 50 feet x 50 feet are conservative for existing rooms. Therefore, a plan to reduce the size of pillars using rock mechanics instrumentation to monitor the resulting stress on pillar remnants and stope backs was devised. The paper describes the test work done on the rock types within the pegmatite dyke. The use of Irad stress cells and extensometers in monitoring the stress in pillars is described. The actual results of the program to date are presented.

In the dry regions of the globe many silver-deposits display certain remarkable features, which at the same time are so totally unlike anything met with among ore-bodies elsewhere that they hare long presented exceptional dificulties, not only to a satisfactory explanation of their origin, but to economical milling. A most striking peculiarity of these ores is the haloid character of many of their bonanzas. To this fact more than to any other may be ascribed most of the unusual uncertainties of mining-operations in desert countries—the marvelous local richness of the ores under certain conditions and the often abrupt transition to utter poverty; the inadequacy of ordinary prospecting customs and the constant devising of new exploratory methods; the unaccountable losses in smelting and the continual change in treatment-practice. For these anomalies certain climatic conditions seem to be chiefly responsible.

UNder the impetus of new demands caused by the defense program, the oil and gas industries of Kansas established new records during the year 1941. In all, 2113 wells were drilled, which compares favorably with the record total drilled in 1937. These 2113 tests resulted in 1446 oil wells, 76 gas wells and 592 dry holes. In all three categories there was an increase over the previous year, but unfortunately the most marked increase was in the dry holes. Nearly 80 per cent of the increase must be allocated to the drilling 01 unsuccessful tests. This was partly because of the increasing difficulty of finding new reserve areas and partly because of the erratic character of the production in the Arbuckle dolomite, which is now the main producing zone. Closer analysis of the totals reveals that western Kansas accounted for 1634 tests, of which 1186 were oil wells, 34 were gas wells and 415 were dry holes. The total potential initial daily production uncovered by the successful wells amounted to 1,691,000 bbl. of oil and 508,000,000 cu. ft. of gas. Both figures indicate a considerable decrease when compared with the proceeding year; in 1940 the respective figures were 2,128,000 bbl. and 1,289,000,000 cu. feet. In eastern Kansas a total of 479 wells were drilled. Among these, 260 were oil wells accounting for a daily initial potential production of 45,662 bbl. The new gas wells numbered 42 and added 290,438,000 cu. ft. per day to the gas potential production of the state. The remaining tests, 177 in number, were dry. It is interesting and significant that almost half (791) of the total wells drilled in western Kansas were drilled by the independent operators. Among the large companies the Cities Service Oil Co. drilled 169 wells; the Stanolind Oil and Gas CO., 101; the Skelly Oil Co., 80; the Continental Oil Co., 99, and the Shell Petroleum Co., 63 wells. In eastern Kansas the independent operators drilled 406 out of the total of 479 wells. Among the major oil companies the Cities Service Oil Co. drilled 38; the Phillips Petroleum Co., 13, and the Sinclair-Prairie Oil Co., II wells. The figures on relative percentages of dry holes to successful oil or gas wells are revealing. In western Kansas approximately one third of all wells drilled by the independent operators were dry holes. The major oil companies drilled approximately 844 wells in western Kansas, of which 678 were successful in finding either oil or gas. It thus appears that the major companies fared much Getter than the independents. In eastern Kansas the major companies drilled 73 wells of which 63 were successful in finding commercial quantities of oil or gas. No less than 286 wildcat tests were put down in western Kansas and 72 in eastern Kansas, or 358 in all, during 1941. Considerably more than half of these were drilled by independent operators; zoo in western and 66 in eastern Kansas. An exploratory hole % mile or more from production is regarded as a wildcat well in Kansas. The refractory linings of open-hearth steel furnaces above the bath line are subject to severe wear not only from the heat caused by the combustion of the fuel and the reactions of the bath, but also from the melting action of the gases when not controlled and directed, and from the scouring of the oxides, etc. with which the products of combustion are charged. The framework that encases or binds the furnace is made up primarily of an iron or steel pan in which the furnace proper is built, side and end buckstays, and tie-rods. The expansion and contraction are so great and variable that the bindings may be subjected to severe stresses unless the tie-rods are carefully adjusted in heating up the furnace, but they are most affected by direct heat and usually become deformed from that cause when the lining is worn thin and, sometimes, when sections of the lining fall in and expose some of the framework. A deformed framework displaces the skewback of the roof arch and tends to distort or crush the roof. Bent buckstays deform the front wall, causing the door frames to stand away from the lining so that the gases burn between the lining and the frames, destroying both of them. Frequently the frames are attached to the buckstays; then when the latter bend the frames usually break. Preventing the distortion of the framework and maintaining the economy of the refractories are real factors in the cost of steel making. Nat only does the cost of general repairs and reconstruction add directly to the cost of steel produced, but the time lost in making repairs cuts down the steel production and increases the overhead expense of both the furnace shop and its allied foundry or mills. Many years ago water-cooled equipment applied to iron blast furnaces made it possible to increase greatly not only the size and production of the furnaces but also the life of the lining. It also cut down the loss from frequent repairs. The open-hearth furnace is a much later invention, especially as a commercial factor; for though it dates from the Fred Siemens patent of 1856, much more progress was made in the Bessemer process until the latter eighties and most of the development

THE recent installation of a high-pressure propeller type fan at the Moose shaft of the Anaconda Copper Mining Co. at Butte, Mont., is of interest on account of novelty of design and also because an appreciable saving was made over the cost of a reversible centrifugal fan such as is ordinarily used where a high pressure is required. The lower cost is due solely to the fact that by means of controls on the power supplied to the three-phase, alternating-current, induction motor, directly connected to the propeller it is possible to reverse the direction of rotation of the propeller and thus reverse the direction of air flow. The extra air ducts and reversing doors required for this purpose with centrifugal fans are not necessary, and their elimination greatly reduces these construction charges, which form a great part of the total expense. The Badger State mine for which the Moose shaft is used as the main outlet air course is now being developed to the 4100-ft. level. The old centrifugal fan, formerly used at the collar of the shaft, was installed 15 years ago at a time when most of the stoping was being done above the 2400-ft. level, and when the temperature of the rock was much lower than it is now on the bottom levels recently opened. The old fan, therefore, became inadequate to maintain desirable ventilation conditions, on account of the increase in resistance to air flow incident to the greater depth of the mine workings and because a much larger volume of air is required to offset the higher rock temperatures. Propeller, or disk, fans commonly used in the ventilation of mines are not suited to high-pressure work, but economies in the cost of their installation have long been recognized. In South Africa use has been made of a number of propellers placed in series along a common shaft, the number of propellers used being varied with requirements for meeting different conditions of mine resistance, but the mechanical efficiency is described as being low. In Butte, experimental work was done by the writer along similar lines under somewhat different conditions, but with poor results as to both pressure capacity and mechanical efficiency. Tests were also made of two different types of propeller fans of moderate size, which were said by the manufacturers to be suited to high-pressure mine ventilation.
