This paper discusses the benefits of such stockpile storage as well as the available types of belt conveyor stockpiling units. Alternative reclaiming arrangements for stockpiles are reviewed, and the advantages and disadvantages of each arrangement are discussed.

INTRODUCTION The regional characteristics of porphyry copper deposits in South America southward from Pantanos and Pegadorcito, Columbia, will be summarized. The age of formation of deposits spans the period from the Permian to the present. Where possible, the general characteristics and the individual structural features of the deposits are integrated into the plate tectonic model. Individual deposits cited in this chapter, located in Fig. 1, are the best known and most fully described, and form the Andean copper belt (Peterson, 1958). Smaller porphyry copper deposits fall both east and west of the line of large, high grade deposits (e.g., Chuquicamata and Toquepala) that make up the spine of this belt. Most of those smaller deposits (e.g., Mi Vida [Koukharsky and Mirre, 19761) are omitted from Fig. 1 and Tables 1 and 2, however. Neither the Andean orogen nor the individual deposits within it are as well de- scribed in the literature as are their counter- parts in the Cordilleran orogen of North America. Therefore, generalizations relying on regional geologic mapping, geophysics, and isotopic geochemistry lack details pertinent to this type of deposit in the Cordilleran orogen. The South American porphyry copper province has been described by Hollister ( 1974) to include most of the Andean orogen excepting the tin province of Bolivia. Porphyry copper deposits have not been commonly found within the tin belt, although copper-tin (e.g., San Rafael, Peru) and copper-tungsten (e.g., Llamuco, Chile) de- posits are known. James (1971) shows the depth to the Moho to be appreciably greater where the tin belt exists, but disclaims any genetic significance from the coincident appearance of the tin-tungsten province and the inhibition of porphyry copper development where the sialic crust thickens. Dates on tin mineralization in this belt (Clark and Farrar, 1973) are similar to some dates for porphyry copper mineralization known else- where in the Andean orogen. It seems that some mechanism is needed to explain the geographic separation of porphyry copper- molybdenum and simultaneous tin-tungsten- molybdenum metallization within the same tectonic system and appearing at similar distances from the trench. The thickened crust of the tin belt is one of the few known differences. Tables 1 and 2 list some of the most important porphyry copper deposits explored to date, but do not include Antaminas, Peru. or a number of other large skarn deposits

INTRODUCTION One cannot discuss the subject of "Raising Capital in the 1990s" without having a crystal ball and a reliable fortune teller. This discusses "Raising Capital for the 1990sW, which is what Metal1 Mining Corporation did in 1987. We raised (3166 million in an IPO (initial public offering) that was originally planned for only some (375 million. Why did we raise this money? How did we do it, and why was this IPO so successful? The answer to the first question requires a description of the promoter and principal shareholder of Metal1 Mining Corporation, Metallgesellschaft AG. This West Germany company was founded over 100 years ago in Frankfurt as a trading house for non-ferrous metals. It has developed into one of the world's leading firms in the non-ferrous metals industry. The company's worldwide activities in all areas of that business include mining, smelting and refining, the trading of ore, base and precious metals, the production of semi-fabricated and finished metal products, and the provision of engineering, construction and transportation services. Metallgesellschaft AG has also diversified into many other areas, the most significant of which are manufacturing, the production of chemicals, the development and application of technical and chemical processes, the planning and construction of industrial plants, and activities associated with finance, insurance, shipping and freight forwarding, and the provision of barter and countertrade services. It shows that mining was far from the centre of Metallgesellschaft's activities. Therefore, it could not expect to receive an extraordinary amount of board attention. Thus, mining investments not only had to compare well with other mining opportunities, but were in fierce competition with projects from other divisions. In addition, mining was sub-divided into two separate departments -- domestic and international. These two departments had different management styles and diverging interests which resulted in a minimum co-operation between them. The domestic mining department was primarily interested in the survival of the local mines. These mines were characterized by rising operating costs and declining ore grades. It took a special commitment and continued ingenuity to develop and adjust to local conditions, and modern mining and processing technology, in order to remain competitive, or at least survive within the international mining industry. This work has for its purpose the establishment of a new method for determining the structural composition of alloys. The area occupied by a constituent on a few representative photomicrographs of the alloy is measured, by a planimeter, especially designed for metallographic work, and the volume and proportional weight of the constituent calculated. Experiments have shown that the results are accurate enough to justify the application of the method to many problems in metallographic research instead of chemical analysis. The advantage of the method is the possibility of determining the amount of the constituents without separating them from the alloy; their composition may also be determined if the ultimate chemical analysis of the alloy is known. Suppose Fig. 1 represents a part of a photomicrograph on which the total area of the black figures is to be found. By a system of parallel lines drawn short equal distances apart all figures may be divided into trapezoids. As the area of a trapezoid is equal to its median multiplied by its altitude, the relation between the total areas of the black and the white figures comprised within each strip is equal to the relation between the sums of medians for these figures respectively. This is also true for the whole area of the photomicrograph. Therefore, to determine the total areas of the black and white figures we must first find the proportion between the sums of the medians and then divide the area of the whole photomicrograph in the same proportion.

A process has been developed for recovering the refractory metals chromium (Cr), vanadium (V), molybdenum (Mo), and tungsten (W) in mixed secondary source materials, such as contaminated grinding wastes. The wastes are calcined with sodium carbonate in air to yield water-insoluble oxides of the base metals iron (Fe), nickel (Ni), cobalt (Co), and copper (Cu) and water-soluble salts of the refractory metals. An aqueous leach separates these two classes of metal values. Cobalt, nickel, and copper can be recovered from the oxidic residue by conventional processing methods. The leach solution is purified and then treated to recover the refractory metals. The process can accommodate a wide range of feed compositions and generates a minimum of aqueous effluents.

Observations on the tensile deformation of single crystals of austenitic stainless steels as a function of composition, orientation, and temperature are described and compared with relevant data for other alloys. Crystals free from second phases show sharp yield points followed by Lüders' extensions of up to 20 pct. The critical resolved shear stress is strongly temperature-dependent increasing fourfold between 423O and 77°K. A temperature-independent low rate of hardening follows the Luders' extension and is frequently associated with overshoot. Unlike pure metals where Proficse cross slip usually occurs at the end of linear hardening, this stage is terminated either by cross slip or by slip on the conjugate system, the particular node apparently depending upon initial orientation and composition. The presence of 6 ferrite or martensite has a profound effect upon the magnitude of the yield stress and the shape of the stress-strain curve. In experiments on transgranular-stress corrosion cracking of austenitic stainless steels in boiling magnesium chloride, several workers1'2 have shown that increasing amounts of nickel tend to reduce the probability of specimen failure. Reed and paxton3 have observed in single crystals that the macroscopic crack plane changes as the nickel content is increased. For 18 pct Cr-8 pct Ni, the crack plane is sensibly perpendicular to the applied tensile stress; for 20 pct Cr-20 pct Ni the crack plane is (100). The average crack-propagation speed is much lower in the 20 pct Ni crystals. Furthermore, the possible importance of stack-ing-fault energy in nucleation and growth of cracks has been suggested by a number of workers. While the general effect of variations in stack ing-fault energy appears to be quite well-correlated with observed variations in cracking characteristics, each of the theories assigns rather different detailed reasons for these effects. Because the stack ing-fault energy of austenitic steels is believed to be increased with increasing nickel content, and because some theories of trans-granular cracking postulate a mechanical stage in the crack propagation (rather than relying entirely on electrochemical solution), it appeared to be of some interest to investigate the mechanical properties of a series of different compositions of aus-tenite single crystals. These experiments were considered of intrinsic value in view of the relative scarcity of such data on fcc alloys. This paper gives the results of some experiments carried out with this aim in mind, and suggests various 'other experiments which may be helpful in future studies. The experiments are also of interest in view of the recent interest in obtaining higher-strength steels by control of the imperfection content of austenite; although the compositions are not directly comparable, the results are still probably valuable. Comparisons with experiments on other fcc alloy crystals are made where possible to see how well the general pattern of behavior is understood. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE The alloys used in this investigation were vacuum-melted heats of nominally 20 pet Cr-20 pet Ni-60 pet Fe, 20pctCr-16 pct Ni-64 pct Fe, and 20 pctCr-12 pet Ni-68 pet Fe.* Analyses of the material are

This work was first undertaken for the U. S. Bureau of Mines, in 1919-20, by C. E. Julihn, superintendent of the station at Minneapolis. Learning of the interest, in this subject, of B. F. Tillson, of the New Jersey Zinc Co., Mr. Julihn and Mr. Foley went to Franklin, N. J., and discussed the matter with him. A conference in Chicago, in November, 1920, was attended by Dr. F. G. Cottrell, who was then Director of the Bureau of Mines, and representatives of the Bureau of Mines and of the hlissouri School of Mines and Metallurgy; at this time a cooperative plan of work was agreed upon by the Bureau of Mines and the Missouri School of Mines. In February, 1921, Mr. 'Tillson arranged a conference on this subject at the time of the annual meeting of the American Institute of Mining and Metallurgical Engineers, at which several technical papers were presented. In a paper, the Breakage and Heat Treatment of Hock Drill Stcels, he suggested a program that might be carried out in connection with the investigation of the problem. At this conference Mr. Manning, former Director of the Bureau of Mines, suggested the formation of an advisory committee to the Bureaus of Mines and of Standards for prosecution of this investigation. On Feb. 20, 1922, a secoud conference in New York, at the time of the annual meeting of the American Institute of mlining and Metallurgical Engineers, was attended by representatives of various technical societies. At this meeting, the report of Nov. 20, 1921, of the Chiefs of Divisions of Metallurgy of the Bureaus of Mines and of Standards, was discussed and it was agreed: 1. That the survey recommended by the two bureaus should be undertaken, which survey would have for its object the ascertaining of the present status of the practice of the heat treatment of drill steels, the extent to which the breakage occurs, etc.; and 2. That a report should be presented, of the findings of those who made the survey, to the Advisory Board to the Bureaus of Mines and of Standards. The Bureau of Standards assigned $4000 to the prosecution 01 a three-months' survey, which was carried out in April, May, and June, 1922, of about sixty mines

THE search for oil has required, and without a doubt supplies, a tremendous amount of information on the structure, composition, physical properties, and history of sedimentary rocks. The earliest and most complete source of knowledge is the sample or core of the rock itself, the uses of which are well known. The purpose of this paper is primarily to discuss a new method for obtaining these cores, and to illustrate its use in connection with electrical logs. Most cores have been obtained through a special adaptation of rotary drilling, and the results have been remarkably good, considering the mechanical problems involved. Unfortunately, because of the time and expense, this method cannot be used for the entire length of the drill hole. Even though ingenious contrivances have been evolved in order to reduce the time spent in round trips, such as wire-line coring equipment, mechanical coring still remains too expensive to be carried out con-tinuously. In practice, therefore, one is finally compelled to estimate the probable depths of the more interesting horizons and, allowing a wide margin of safety, to core through those sections only. It is true also that interesting results have been obtained by examining the cuttings brought to the surface by the mud circulated in the well during the process of drilling. Be that as it may, the inescapable fact remains that key horizons may be passed inadvertently, for one reason or another, while the drilling operations are being performed. The only continuous record of the formations encountered is that furnished by electrical surveys. Obviously, it would be desirable to make the electrical survey first and to take the samples from the wall of the hole according to the indications on the electrical log. In this way, it would be possible to core only the exact sections desired, eliminating the otherwise inevitable estimates as to the point at which to start coring, and thereby reducing to a minimum this expensive operation. At the same time this method would provide a maximum' of useful samples.

General Geology of the Northern Black Hills. The " Black Hills of Dakota," to the northern part of which the following observations apply, occupy a position on either side of the boundary between Wyoming and South Dakota, approximately between 103" 15' and 104" 48' of west longitude and 43 15' to 43" 50' of north latitude. The area is roughly 4160 square miles.* (See Plate I.) As has been pointed out by Profs. H. O. Hofman, I?. R. Carpenter and others, and illustrated by Mr. Newton in the publications of the United States Geological Survey, these hills are made up of a large number of the known formations from the Archean to the Tertiary, which latter constitutes the border of the region. The mining operations are largely confined to the interior of this area, and the centers from which they are conducted (Deadwood, Lead City, Galena, etc.) are situated near the line of junction of the Archean schists and quartzite, supposed to represent the Potsdam Sandstone of the N. Y. series, or the lowest of the Paleozoic measures. The Archean or pre-Paleozoic rocks consist mainly of a mica-schist in which hornblende and garnet are frequently

The Louisiana Continental Shelf is a submarine area extending offshore as much as one hundred miles. The Gulf bottom in this region varies considerably in extent, profile and composition and consists largely of sedimentary deposits, predominantly those of the Mississippi River. It is very young in a geological sense. Up to the present time few major structures have been erected offshore in the Gulf and no comprehensive preliminary tests have been carried out. Results of pile driving tests are of little value as actual bearing capacities far exceed the dynamic resistance to driving as measured by conventional formulas. Soils encountered are, with few exceptions, cohesive and piling consequently develop their supporting power through surface friction. Because of the time required and relatively high costs, no complete load tests have been made. The results of those tests which have been made, and information obtained from pulling piling in one structure, indicate that design loadings could be considerably increased, and it is contended that comprehensive preliminary investigations including an actual load test, combined with borings and examination of materials encountered by competent soil experts, would effect economies in design far in excess of their cost. The Louisiana Continental Shelf—General The Louisiana . . . continental shelf is a submarine area which extends seaward for as great a distance as one hundred miles off the present shoreline. The Gulf bottom in this region is characterized by low slopes and its outer margin is outlined by the fifty fathom (300 ft.) contour. South of the margin of the shelf the slopes steepen abruptly in the continental slope zone and plunge into the deeps of the Gulf of Mexico.l The engineer who is called upon to design a structure on this shelf is concerned only with the uppermost portion to a depth generally not to exceed Ioo to 150 ft. This layer is very young in a geological sense, and it has the characteristics usually associated with infancy. A few of these are lack of strength, lack of uniformity, and high water content. It consists of the sedimentary deposits of the various rivers and streams entering the Gulf. These streams are all heavily burdened in quantities sufficient to fill the areas at their mouths, were it not for the fact that continual subsidence, equal or greater in amount and acting directly opposite, prevail over the sedimentary workings of the streams. This subsidence has been estimated by geologists to be at the rate of at least one foot per century. Influence of Mississippi River The Mississippi River, which has been the predominant factor in the formation of practically all the Louisiana continental shelf, is one of two rivers flowing into the Gulf that have been able to build protruding deltas. The Mississippi has done so because of its enormous size and load. It deposits sediments in amounts sufficient to replace and actually gain on the amount of subsidence.

A characteristic property of bituminous coal is that upon being heated the coal becomes plastic, evolves volatile gases, and finally solidifies into coke. This fundamental characteristic is of utmost importance and is utilized in the production of the high-temperature coke upon which the steel industry is so dependent; but from the standpoint of operation in the domestic underfeed stoker this coking tendency seriously interferes with efficient combustion. When the coke formed has too strong a structure, certain difficulties result, such as low rate of burning, slow response to heat demand, and, in extreme cases, extinction of fire. The plastic mass prevents uniform distribution of air through the fuel bed and, with strongly coking coals, large dense pieces of coke are produced which have much less reacting surface than was possessed by the original coal. In both ignition and combustion of solid fuels, the extent of the reacting surface is an accelerating factor. Poor combustion permits a surplus of fuel to accumulate in the furnace because the rate of feed and the rate of combustion are not in equilibrium, and this produces an unbalanced condition detrimental to continued automatic service. In order to bum strongly coking coals satisfactorily in a conventional stoker during the three requisite types of operation—continuous, intermittent and hold-fire, frequent attention is necessary. Domestic stokers are defined by the industry as residential stoker heaters that burn 60 lb. of coal or less per hour. With a few exceptions, these units employ the underfeed principle of combustion in which both air and coal move in the same direction up and through the fuel bed. Domestic combustion equipment has difficulty in meeting the problems presented by the several variations in ash and volatile matter, in ash-clinkering tendencies, in coking properties, and in the particle size of bituminous coals. The work of Bituminous Coal Research Inc. at Battelle Memorial Institute has shown that, of these, coking characteristics and the clinkering tendencies have the greatest effect upon the operation of the conventional clinkering type of stoker. Typical coke formations in a clinkering type of underfeed domestic stoker are illustratcd in Fig. I, which shows (A) the ideal fuel bed obtained with a noncoking or free-burning coal; (B) the type of fuel bed formed with a coal that produces a weak coke; and (C) the type of fuel bed obtained with a strongly coking coal. C is characteristic of the fuel bed developed when the average Pennsylvania bituminous coal is burned in an underfeed stoker of conventional type. It is apparent from these pictures that the formation of coke trees will seriously interfere with the efficient automatic combustion of Pennsylvania bituminous coals.

The plastic mass prevents uniform distribution of air through the fuel bed and, with strongly coking coals, large dense pieces of coke are produced which have much less reacting surface than was possessed by the original coal. In both ignition and combustion of solid fuels, the extent of the reacting surface is an accelerating factor. Poor combustion permits a surplus of fuel to accumulate in the furnace because the rate of feed and the rate of combustion are not in equilibrium, and this produces an unbalanced condition detrimental to continued automatic service. In order to bum strongly coking coals satisfactorily in a conventional stoker during the three requisite types of operation—continuous, intermittent and hold-fire, frequent attention is necessary. Domestic stokers are defined by the industry as residential stoker heaters that burn 60 lb. of coal or less per hour. With a few exceptions, these units employ the underfeed principle of combustion in which both air and coal move in the same direction up and through the fuel bed. Domestic combustion equipment has difficulty in meeting the problems presented by the several variations in ash and volatile matter, in ash-clinkering tendencies, in coking properties, and in the particle size of bituminous coals. The work of Bituminous Coal Research Inc. at Battelle Memorial Institute has shown that, of these, coking characteristics and the clinkering tendencies have the greatest effect upon the operation of the conventional clinkering type of stoker. Typical coke formations in a clinkering type of underfeed domestic stoker are illustratcd in Fig. I, which shows (A) the ideal fuel bed obtained with a noncoking or free-burning coal; (B) the type of fuel bed formed with a coal that produces a weak coke; and (C) the type of fuel bed obtained with a strongly coking coal. C is characteristic of the fuel bed developed when the average Pennsylvania bituminous coal is burned in an underfeed stoker of conventional type. It is apparent from these pictures that the formation of coke trees will seriously interfere with the efficient automatic combustion of Pennsylvania bituminous coals.

INTRODUCTION THE Inspiration Consolidated Copper Co.'s plant at Miami, Ariz., was designed and built to make possible the profitable working of a low-grade, finely disseminated copper deposit containing 100,000,000 tons of ore averaging 1.64 per cent. in copper. From the-beginning it was evident that the-plant could not, be kept integral but that a break would have to be made somewhere in the flow-sheet, removing at least the concentrator to a site more suitable than any available near the mine. It was finally decided, after considering numerous arrangements, to do the coarse crushing at the mine, to store the crushed ore in a bin from which it could be loaded into railroad cars and to haul it to the concentrator, an excellent site for which was available about 1 ¾ miles from the mine. The original intention was to equip a plant to treat 7,500 tons of ore per clay, but through the acquisition and proving up of additional ore reserves, the introduction of the Ohio caving system, and the excellent results obtained in the test mill (which made it possible to treat a lower-grade ore than had been thought possible) it was evident that a plant of much greater capacity should be supplied. It was, therefore, decided to treat approximately 15,000 tons of ore per day, the duties of the four main divisions to be as follows:

Time and experience have demonstrated that by means of the Waelz process zinc, lead, cadmium, arsenic, antimony, bismuth and tin can be volatilized satisfactorily. In this way difficult gold ores are being treated to allow for the recovery of the precious metal. Iron ore containing zinc is being treated to remove the zinc and recover the iron. In Germany, thallium is being recovered in commercial quantities from the zinc oxide fume; indium, germanium and gallium are also concentrated to a degree warranting recovery, even though these rare metals are only recognizable in the ore by means of the spectroscope. The physical, chemical or mineralogical condition of the raw material affects very little the applicability of the process. The name Waelz is derived from the German word Waelzen, meaning a "trundling motion," which very aptly describes the movement of the charge through the slowly rotating kiln. The recovery of zinc and lead by volatilization in a rotary kiln has its origin in a process patented in 1910 by Edward Dedolph, of British Columbia. The Dedolph patent was taken over by the Metallgesell-schaft of Frankfurt-on-Main, Germany, which in cooperation with the Griesheim-Elektron, now a part of a large industrial combine, introduced certain improvements (Ohlmer, Specketer patents), but without bringing the process to a state suitable for large-scale operations. The war temporarily stopped all work on the process, and it was not until after the war that the Krupp Grusonwerk, of Magdeburg-Buckau, Germany, quite independently of the Metallgesellschaft, instituted research work in this field of metallurgy, which in 1923 led to the Waelz process proper. The Krupp Grusonwerk and the Metallgesellschaft A.G. later on collaborated, and by their joint efforts further developed and perfected the Waelz process, which they are marketing together as "Waelz-Gemeinschaft." The process is capable of treating a varied type of material; for instance, oxidized and sulphide zinc ores, calamine (zinc carbonate ore) waste dumps, jig tailings, jig slimes, table concentrate slimes, brass ashes, zinc-bearing iron ores (where the iron sinter is the real objective and the zinc oxide a by-product), electrolytic-zinc leach residues, zinc muffle residues and works sweepings, lead-furnace slags, tin ores and slags, anti-
