The first autlientic description of an iron bath for the deposition of iron is probably that of Bottger in 1846, who used a bath containing ferrous sulfate and ammonium chloride. In 1861, Kramer deposited iron from ferrous chloride solution. Electrolytic iron was produced in 1869 by Bietz, who used it for making some magnetic tests. In the same year, Klein is. said to have worked out his process. Jacobil in 1869 described the results obtained in electroplating with iron on copper for making dies and plates for bank notes, by Klein's process. A letter from Klein to Jacobi describes the bath more fully. It consisted of FeS04 + (NH4)2SO4. Lenz2 described some properties of electrolytically precipitated iron. He used Klein's bath, FeS0, + MgSO4 + MgCO3, to neutralize and obtained fine-grained and hard iron. His conclusions were as follows: 1. Electrolytic iron and copper contain gases, notably hydrogen. 2. The volume of gas absorbed by iron varies within wide limits, but it is easy for iron to take up very considerable quantities of gas. 3. The absorption of gas is principally in the first formed layers of iron. 4. When iron is heated, gas begins to come off below 100°, principally hydrogen. 5. Heated to redness, reduced iron oxidizes in water, in part at least at the expense of the oxygen of the water, decomposing it and setting free hydrogen, which is partly or wholly absorbed. Siemens,3 in 1889, was the first to propose a general process embodying a step for leaching a sulfide mineral with ferric chloride or sulfate and a step for regenerating the leach and depositing iron on a cathode in a diaphragm cell. THE following paper-in no sense a technical paper-is a summary of a safety campaign instituted by a coal-mining company to improve an unfortunate safety record. The experience should be suggestive equally to coal and metal-mining companies. With few precedents to follow in the beginning, the course was charted by trial and error. The endeavor, often disheartening, finally resulted in the capture of the most coveted safety trophy in the mining industry, "The Sentinels of Safety," awarded by the Hercules Powder Co. of Wilmington, Del., through the U. S. Bureau of Mines. The period described covers the 10-year interval, 1924 to 1933, the year 1933 being that for which the award was made. The stability of lead ethyl xanthate precipitate in aqueous environment of different pH (4.5 to 10.5) and at temperatures 25°C-60°C was investigated. Dissolution leads to a wide variation of pH, xanthate, and lead ions concentration in solution and to a deposition of solid products of reactions. X-ray diffraction patterns of these solids enabled identification of Pb(OH)3, PbCO3, and PbS as constituents of the remaining undecomposed Pb(EtX)1, together with some unidentified compounds (which give rise to intensive peaks with d values of 2.82A and 1.71A, and numerous peaks of lesser intensity).

THE effect of cold-working upon electrical conductivity of copper and of copper alloys appears not to be generally known in detail Although several papers on the subject have been presented, showing variable effects according to alloy composition, it is often assumed that the 2 to 3 per cent lowering of the conductivity of ordinary tough-pitch copper by severe cold-working is typical for copper alloys Because of this situation it was decided to carry out the present work upon several types of copper, copper-zinc alloys over the commercial range of brasses, other binary alloys, and numerous age-hardening alloys in the quenched, and quenched and aged conditions The large number of alloys investigated made it impossible to study every one in the detail it may have merited Inasmuch as several interesting points that could not be satisfactorily explained came to light, further work is contemplated by the authors It is usually considered that the normal effect of cold-work on ductile metals and unordered alloys is to decrease conductivity slightly In alloys that are in the ordered state, as annealed or otherwise heat-treated, cold-working tends to disorder the structure, resulting in very marked lowering of conductivity The random state of atomic arrangement produces lower conductivity than the ordered state for the same composition 1 PREVIOUS WORK previous work in the authors' laboratory has shown the electrical conductivity of several copper alloys to be decreased by greater amounts than might have been expected, in view of the general knowledge on the subject, when cold-worked Guillet and Ballay2 investigated the influence of cold-work upon the resistivity of several metals and alloys, including copper and some copper alloys The increase of resistivity due to severe working was less than 4 per cent for all pure metals tested, while the increases for the alloys were generally higher In the copper-zinc alloys, they found that the increase of resistance due to drawing increased with zinc content, and reported a 21 7 per cent increase of resistance for an alloy containing 67 9 per cent Cu as severely worked Masima and Sachs3 studied the change in electrical resistance of three brass crystals when stretched in the tensile test, obtaining increases in resistance of the order of 3 per cent for 30 to 40 per cent reduction of area of the specimens The resistance decreased again when the cold-worked crystals were subsequently annealed Bardenheuer and Schmidt4 found that the conductivity of copper was decreased by 3 to 4 per cent when reduced 50 per cent by working The conductivity of 72-28

Copper-calcium alloys are of interest as materials for use in deoxidized conductors of high conductivity. That calcium is effective in deoxidizing and degasifying copper is well known. Brandenberg and Wiensl have described the use of calcium in the casting of sound copper and state that the deoxidation can be carried out without difficulty. The castings that they prepared were sound and sufficiently ductile to permit wire drawing. Pratt,2 in British Patent No. 1699 (1907), has claimed the use of calcium for the deoxidation and degasification of copper. Masing3

Pneumatic stowing is commonly employed in European coal mines, but is not used in the United States. This paper reports a study conducted to analyze the conditions under which pneumatic stowing might be advantageously used and the techniques and costs involved in order to effect this. Although stowing may reduce the subsidence in a mining area, this does not entirely eliminate the surface damage. Besides, the cost of stowing will run about $1.50 to $3 per ton of coal mined not including the cost of fill material, if it has to be bought and transported to the mine. Stowing my, however, be economically viable under special circumstances such as in thick, steep, or contiguous seams.

Eighty-four quaternary titanium-base alloys from the following systems were investigated: 1. Titanium-chromium-carbon-nitrogen. 2. Titanium-chromium-carbon with copper, vanadium, molybdenum, manganese, iron, or nickel. 3. Titanium-chromium-nitrogen with vanadium, molybdenum, or nickel. The tensile properties, minimum bend radii, hardnesses, response to heat treatment and aging treatment, and phase relationships of these alloys are reported. HIS paper is the third in a series describing J- titanium-base alloys. The first paper describingdescribed titanium binary alloys, and the second contained data on a large number of titanium ternary alloys. Eighty-four heats, comprising three groups of quaternary titanium-base alloys, are described in this paper as follows: 1. Titanium-chromium-carbon-nitrogen alloys. 2. Titanium-chromium-carbon alloys containing copper, vanadium, molybdenum, manganese, iron, or nickel. 3. Titanium-chromium-nitrogen alloys containing vanadium, molybdenum, or nickel. The methods of preparing, fabricating, and testing the alloys are described in the paper Binary Titanium Alloys. Quaternary Titanium - Chromiurn - Carbon -Nitrogen Alloys The properties of titanium-chromium-nitrogen and titanium-chromium-carbon ternary alloys have been described in the paper Ternary Alloys of Titanium. Because small amounts of nitrogen and carbon both appear to be somewhat beneficial, these additions have been investigated fairly completely in quaternary alloys containing chromium at the following levels of composition: 2.5, 3.5, and 5.0 pct chromium 0.25 and 0.5 pct carbon 0.1 and 0.2 pct nitrogen Mechanical Properties: The mechanical properties of these alloys are listed in table I. Fig. 1 and 2 show graphically a comparison of the tensile properties and hardnesses of quaternary alloys with those of the titanium-chromium binary alloys. Fig. 1 shows the comparison at 0.25 pct carbon, whereas fig. 2 shows the comparison at 0.5 pct carbon. It is concluded from these data that 0.25 pct carbon and 0.1 pct nitrogen are desirable additions to the 5 pct chromium-titanium base. It is further concluded that most of this improvement is produced by the nitrogen and that carbon is either harmless or mildly beneficial, at least up to 0.25 pct. Structure and Transformation Range: The effects of carbon and nitrogen on the transformation range of the titanium-chromium alloys were determined as part of the routine investigation. Additions of 0.25 pct carbon and 0.1 pct nitrogen had no appreciable effect upon the transformation range. However, the addition of 0.25 pct carbon and 0.2 pct nitrogen definitely raised the beta solvus temperature, as shown by fig. 3.

The microstructural variations of periclase (MgO) in the presence of oxide liquids are examined under the steelmaking variables of: 1) temperature, 2) liquid composition, and 3) FeO additions under different oxidation levels. Attention is given to the distribution of the phases, both liquid and solid, and to the growth of individual crystalline grains. Silicate liquids penetrate more extensively between individual periclase grains than do liquids containing high percentages of Fe2O3 Higher MgO solubilities in the liquid and lower MgO contents of the solid favor more rapid grain growth. The presence of a second solid phase reduces the periclase grain growth rate and increases the amount of the solid-to-solid contact within the oxide microstructures at high temperatures. The service suitability of a refractory depends on many factors. Two are of major importance and include 1) the thermal resistance to melting, and 2) the mechanical resistance to loads at service temperatures. Neither is a simple consequence of the service temperatures because service conditions will alter compositions, produce partial melting, and induee phase changes. Consequently, the equilibrium phase relationships have been rather thoroughly studied and give a knowledge of the thermal resistance to melting, but do not give full information about the mechanical properties because two refractories with the same types and quantities of phase may have different microstructures. Although variations of microstructures with time, temperature, and composition have been subjects for extensive investigation in metals, only a limited amount of comparable microstructural work has been performed for refractory materials.' This study was an attempt to evaluate some of the consequences of service parameters upon the microstructures of refractories so that bases may be established for the analyzing of high temperature mechanical properties. Periclase (MgO) was chosen as the refractory oxide; variables included those which are encountered under steelmaking conditions such as 1) temperature, 2) liquid composition, and 3) FeO additions under various oxidation levels. Specific attention was given to the distribution of the phases, both liquid and solid, and to the growth of individual crystalline grains. The most closely related work on microstructures of polyphase materials is that of Van Vlack and Rieg-ger2 on the microstructure of magnesiowüstite [(Mg,Fe)O] in the presence of silica. In that work which pertained to solid solutions with less than 40 pct MgO, most of the quantitative work was performed on FeO microstructures. The chief conclusions concerning these relatively low-melting oxide solids were as follows: 1) the rate of crystalline grain growth is inversely proportional to the grain diameter, 2) grain growth proceeds more rapidly at higher temperatures but is slightly retarded by additional liquid content, and 3) a Silicate-containing liquid penetrates as a film between the individual magnesiowüstite grains independent of time, temperature, amount of liquid, or the MgO/ FeO ratio. The above observations are in contrast to prior work3 on the microstructure of silica in the presence of iron oxide-containing liquids where the liquid does not penetrate as a complete film between solid grains. The phase relationships for the compositions of the present work are shown in Fig. 1 which is a summary of the work of several investigators.4 Of importance is the fact that CaO forms a more stable structure with SiO2 and Al2O3 than do either MgO or FeO. The oxygen potential has little effect on periclase unless iron oxide is also present. The iron oxide is ferrous at moderately low oxygen levels, changing to ferric as the Oxygen potential is increased so the spinels, magnetite, and magesioferrite are formed.5 These two phases are relatively stable in air at steelmaking temperatures. An examination is made of the various factors influencing drilling rate and drill bit life in various diameter holes. It is concluded that drill bits in the size range 4% to 6 1/4 in. can be used to attain substantially the some daily drilling progress as conventional size bits in soft rock drilling operations. An examination of the most important factors influencing "hazard of losing the hole" in the different hole size results in the conclusion that the smaller hole sizes can probably be drilled at reasonably low risk. However, this risk will be somewhat greater in the smaller diameter holes, requiring that special drilling and mud engineering practices be used to make small diameter holes practicable in soft rock drilling operations. An engineering analysia is made of the power and hydraulic requirements of several drill string-hole combinations to test the feasibility of drilling .small diameter holes in soft rock areas. Large econormies in rig power requirements appear possible by drilling .smaller .size holes in these operations. INTRODUCTION The industry now is re-examining the utility of small diameter holes in the light of substantial technical advances made in recent years. Faced with increasing cost of finding reserves and with proration after developing them, the industry must either develop methods of economizing or receive a lower rate of return on investments. Small diameter holes appear to involve an attractive method of economizing. Our objective is to determine if this is technically possible in soft rock operations. Soft rock, as used in this report, refers to those formations of a "drill-ability" corresponding to that of all Gulf Coast formations shallower than and frequently including much of the Eocene rock system. An important phase of technology which we shall examine is relative drilling rate and bit footage which may be obtained with various size bits. Rig operating efficiency, particularly as influenced by hazard, is also discussed in detail. The technical conclusions resulting from these examinations are used to develop sample drill string design and rig horsepower requirements for drilling holes as smaH as 4 3/4 in. and larger. The principal criterion used for the drill string design is that approximately the same daily drilling progress would be possible in all size holes in soft rock operations. This facilitates a comparison of rig size required for drilling the hole sizes in the range between 4 3/4 and 8 3/4 in. BROAD PROBLEM OF DRILLING RATE AND BIT FOOTAGE The three factors controlling daily drilling progress are: (1) drilling rate of bit while on bottom turning, (2) bit footage, and (3) rig operating efficiency. Let us look now at the first two of these factors. Drilling technology has progressed to the point that a semi-quantitative analysis of the effect of various operating variables upon these factors can be made. Those factors which apparently limit both drilling rate and bit footage for bits now in use are: (1) bit design, (2) weight on bit, (3) hydraulic cleaning capacity for bit cutting surfaces and hole bottom, and (4) rotary speed. (We neglect the effect of mud and formation properties because these factors arc the same for the various size bits.

As a result of studies distributed over the earth- including ocean basins as well as continents- some tectonists recognize four dominant structural trends: 1) northwest; 2) northeast; 3) nearly east- west, or equatorial; and 4) nearly north-south, or meridional. Baker' proposed a theory to account for these trends and Sonder5 called their world-wide arrangement the regmatic shear pattern. Moody and Hill6 proposed a much more complicated shear network which, although fascinating and perhaps ultimately useful, will not be followed here. In a recent review of deformation within the Cordillera, Wisser7 mentioned the four fundamental directions. The fact that many geologists deny the existence of the regmatic shear pattern implies that the fundamental structures are far from obvious. It may mean, also, that some geologists are not accustomed to examine regional and world maps analytically. The maps require much study, and certain features, should be isolated on overlays. Even so, with the present limited knowledge, uncertainties remain. The following analysis is a qualitative experiment, subject to change as information accumulates, and should be supplemented by the western sheet of the Tectonic Map of the United States.8

THE controversy regarding the ,'probable future of the Mexican oil fields, and its relation to the oil industry of the United States, has led to the preparation of this paper. As has been predicted by several writers in recent papers, certain of the producing areas in the so-called "southern fields" in the Tampico Embayment have only a limited oil reserve. These areas are being pulled on by every pipe line in that region, and the length of time that they will continue to produce is a direct factor of the daily oil shipments of these companies. However, this is not the whole story, and in the following paragraphs an attempt will be made to show that the life of Mexican oil production will be a long one, and Mexican oil will continue to be a large factor n the market for an indefinite time after the areas mentioned above have been drained. The past and present producing fields will be discussed separately, in order-to establish a basis for comparison, the ,only method by which underground reserves 'can be estimated in these fields.

IN THE Southwestern copper region the event of greatest interest was the starting up of the new Hurley, N. Mex., smelter of the Chino Mines division of the Nevada Consolidated Copper Corp., which occurred in May. This plant, built as a wet-charge smelter for treating largely an all-concentrate charge, embodies in its de- sign the latest in materials-handling equipment. Noticeable around this smelter is the absence of tram cars and trackage for the handling of charge, dust and other materials. Concentrate from the mills is received in bottom- dump cars which are unloaded into a series of concentrate bins. Concentrate is then reclaimed through the bottom of the bins and discharged through a feeder on to a conveyor belt. Flux for the charge is fed on to the conveyor ahead of the concentrate charge. The belt-mixed charge is conveyed to the furnace building and discharged into the furnace charge bin ready for feeding to the reverberatory furnace. As in the McGill plant, the furnace is fed by vibrating conveyors, one down each side of the furnace.

The Ni-Ni,Ti lamellar eutectic alloy responds to unidirectional solidification by alig-nment of the platelets of the two phases roilghly perpendicular to the moving solid-liquid interface. X-ray diffraction and zetallographic experimenls show that the following cryslallographic relationships exist in the directionally solidified ingots: lamellar interface w [0001] Ni3Ti 11 (111 }Ni local growth direction (1120) Ni3Ti n (110) Ni These relationships are rationalized on the basis of the crystallography of the constituent phases. In recent years researchers in several laboratories have shown that an aligned or "controlled" micro-structure can be produced in many binary eutectic alloys by forcing the alloy to solidify unidirectionally in an elongated crucible.'-3 It also has been found that a unique crystallographic relationship often develops between the two phases in such a structure.4, 5 Since a parallel arrangement of phase particles in an alloy should, and, in many cases, does, produce unique and highly anisotropic properties, the alloys so produced are of potential interest in a variety of applications. Studies of these alloys are also of interest at the academic level because they help to improve our basic understanding of the way in which metals solidify. This paper reports the metallographic and crystallographic structure of another of these alloys—that between nickel and Ni3Ti. In a separate paper, hot tensile and stress rupture properties as well as deformation and fracture behavior of the same alloy are discussed.19 EXPERIMENTAL DETAILS AND RESULTS General Characteristics of the Eutectic Reaction. Several small exploratory Ni-Ti melts were made to resolve a conflict in Hansen6 over the eutectic composition. The alloy containing 16.4 at. pct Ti, Fig. 1, appeared metallographically to be closest to the eutectic composition, although small dendritic patches of proeutectic nickel are present. The eutectic morphology is lamellar and appears quite sharp and angular, indicating a strong influence of crystallographic factors upon the microstructure. Some of the eutectic nickel platelets are continuous with the primary phase, whereas in hyper eutectic melts a "halo" of nickel generally surrounded the proeutectic inter-metallic platelets, indicating that nickel is the nucleating phase in this eutectic reaction. Extensive precipitation of Ni3Ti has occurred in the primary nickel phase in a Widmanstatten pattern which makes the dendrites difficult to differentiate from the eutectic mixture. This phenomenon may account for discrepancies among the eutectic compositions reported in the literature. The sloping solvus line bounding the nickel primary solid solution explains the presence of the intermetallic precipitate. Poole and Hume-Rothery7 report that the solubility of titanium in nickel drops from 13.8 at. pct at the eutectic temperature (1304°C) to approximately 9 at. pct at 700°C (Ni3Ti, on the other hand, melts con-gruently and exhibits essentially no solubility for nickel or titanium). Lever rule calculations based upon Poole and Hume-Rothery's phase diagram indicate an increase from 21 vol pct Ni3Ti in the eutectic mixture at the eutectic temperature to 61 pct at room temperature. Selective point count measurements of the volume fraction of eutectic Ni3Ti platelets in the eutectic microstructure yielded a value of 46 i 2 vol pct, which required extensive precipitation of Ni3Ti from the nickel solid solution onto the eutectic intermetallic platelets during cooling from the solidification temperature. Influence of Directional Solidification. Nickel bar and titanium sponge of 99.9 pct purity were induction-melted in zirconia crucibles under argon in the proportion of 13.8 wt pct (16.4 at. pct) Ti to produce 14-lb master heats which were cast into investment molds yielding 5/8-in.-diam pins approximately 10 in. long. These pins were remelted under argon in horizontal zirconia boats and unidirectionally solidified to produce 1/2-in.-sq ingots approximately 44 in. long. Details of the experimental techniques and apparatus are described elsewhere.'

PYRRHOTITE has long been considered a gangue mineral to be eliminated as tailing in the treatment of various sulphide ores. However, in recent years the world-wide lack of sulphur resources has called attention to this mineral as a potential source of both sulphur and iron. Its importance as an economic mineral, however, has not been particularly emphasized. For this reason very little is known about its response to flotation, except that it can be depressed easily in alkaline circuit, by long aeration,1,2 addition of oxidizing agents3 or by starch.4 The object of this work was to study the floatability of pyrrhotite. This includes the effect of oxidation by aeration, of copper activation, and of change in pH.

The constitution of the aluminum-cobalt alloys has been the subject of relatively few investigations. Brunckl analyzed the residue which remained after treating the 17 per cent cobalt alloy with dilute hydrochloric acid. The results of the analyses indicated the existence of a compound Co3Al13. Guillet2 published a liquidus for the aluminum-cobalt system which contained two maxima corresponding to CoA16 and CoAl2 and two eutectic points at 30 and 74 per cent Co. The most extensive investigation of the system was carried out by Gwyer13 whose results are summarized in Fig. 1. It will be noted that at the aluminum end there is a suppressed eutectic at 644' C. By extrapolation of the duration of the eutectic arrest to zero, the composition of the compound was placed at Co3Al13. Another thermal arrest was noted at 550" C., which Gwyer attributed to a peritectic reaction. The present investigation of the aluminum end of the aluminum-cobalt system is the eleventh of a series dealing with the constitution of aluminum-rich alloys prepared from electrolytically refined a1uminum.l Preparation of Alloys.—The alloys used in this work were all prepared from electrolytically refined aluminum, the analysis of which is shown in Table 1. In preparing some of the alloys, metallic cobalt (98 to 99 per cent) was used either directly or in the form of an intermediate alloy, the composition of which is given in Table 1. In order to obtain alloys of higher purity, cobalt was introduced into some of the alloys by means of chemically pure cobaltous chloride which was readily reduced by the aluminum. A small electric furnace with nickel-chromium heating elements was used in the preparation of the alloys. Chemical Analysis.—An analysis sample from each melt was chill-cast in the form of a plate 3/16 in. thick. In all cases the casting temperature was well above the liquidus. It is situated about 2 miles from the town of Telluride, near the summit of the Uncompahgre range, at the head of Cornett basin, at an altitude of 11,000 feet, and in a district of excellent record in the past and of great promise for the future. Leaching of copper ores is a comparatively old art, probably dating back to medieval times. The leaching of mixed oxidized-sulfide ores, however, is modern. The first modern plant leaching mixed ores was at Ajo, Ariz., where commercial operations commenced in 1917. While the ore at Ajo was primarily oxidized there was always some sulfide present. The Inspiration leaching plant, which was put in operation in 1926, may be considered the first plant constructed for the extraction of both sulfide and oxidized copper. The pioneers in leaching mixed ores had a difficult task before them since they had very little fundamental data on the chemical and physical factors of leaching. For the very large amount of painstaking experimental work that was done before building the Ajo and Inspiration leaching plants the reader is referred to the original articles.' For a period of several years the writer worked on problems connected with the chemistry and physics of leaching mixed oxidized-sulfide ores. This paper summarizes the experimental work and discusses various factors involved in leaching ores. It also presents many data heretofore unpublished. Among the new data are those on chrysocolla, pages 518 to 519, inclusive; dioptase, page 519; covellite, page 529; virtually all those on chalcopyrite, pages 531 to 533, inclusive; enargite, page 533; and tetrahedrite and tennantite, pages 534 and 533. The oxidized copper minerals of commercial importance in American ores are azurite, Cu3(OH)2(CO3)2; malachite, Cu2(OH)2CO3; chrysocolla, CuSi03.2H2O; tenorite (or melaconite), CuO; and cuprite, Cu2O. Dioptase, CuSiO3.H2O is less common. Brochantite, CuSO4.3Cu(OH)2, while the chief mineral in the ore at Chuquicamata, is not of major importance in the United States. Metallic copper, while chemically not so, is frequently classed as an oxidized mineral of copper. The most important sulfide minerals are chalcocite, Cu2s; covellite, CuS; bornite, Cu5FeS4; and chalcopyrite, CuFeS2. Less important complex sulfides are enargite,

The scope of this paper is the description of two districts in Peru in which deposits of vanadium have been found, and the consideration of much laboratory-work that I and others have done to determine the nature of these deposits. It is with regret that I present some of the data in a state of evident incompletion, particularly the analyses of a few of the minerals, which leaves some doubt as to whether the true nature of the migerals is understood. I make no apology, however, since in this case, as in many others referring to ore-deposits, conclusive opinions cannot be stated until a great amount of work has been done, and the deposit has been thoroughly exploited. I believe that the data and the tentative conclusions here presented indicate a unique and interesting condition which may assist others in work along similar lines; arid further, what is of more practical importance, stimulate a search for a metal which, though long considered rare, is probably so merely because proper care has not been taken to recognize it. An excellent bibliography on the occurrence of vanadium in nature is given by I?. W. Clarke in his paper, Data of Geochemistry;' and in the preparation of this paper 1 have consulted many of the references contained in the Bibliography of the Chemistry of Vanadium, by M. Moisan.2 A brief review of the subject having special reference to the metallurgy of vanadium is contained in the small book by P.
