Would you briefly describe how you chose the minerals industry and reflect upon some of your earliest experiences? I wish that I could say that I had a well-formulated career plan early in life and that mining engineering was always foremost in it, but I cannot, In fact, I was quite indecisive before I finally chose my life's vocation. But in another respect, I am glad my career unfolded in the manner it did because it gave me a better insight into advising others on career opportunities. Probably the greatest problem confronting our youth, and the one I find preys upon their minds the most, is their inability to select a career path early in life. This indecision frequently has a deep psychological effect upon them and they become down on themselves. Therefore, it fortifies them somewhat to learn that others who have become successful in their careers had difficulties choosing a career path early in life. However, while assuring young people that an early choice is not absolutely essential for success, I caution them to work toward as early a decision as possible.

The day is long past when linen and cotton rags were the exclusive raw material of the paper-trade. Wood-fiber, chemically or mechanically prepared, straw, hemp and Esparto grass have largely supplied the demand, which the old materials did not suffice to fill. But even these newer fibers have been of late supplanted, to some extent, by mineral pulp. Weighting and filling materials have also been resorted to, partly to give body to the fabric, partly to increase its weight and reduce the cost per pound. China clay, sulphate of lime and soapstone have generally been employed as loading materials. Even though these materials lack fiber, their addition must by no means be viewed, as it too generally is, entirely as an adulteration. No doubt, to a certain extent, they weaken the paper ; but for ordinary grades the addition of these non-fibrous substances is a positive advantage, as they close the pores between the fibers and lend to the paper a great degree of opaqueness and a superior finish. Fibrous talc, as a form of pulp, has the same effect, without appreciably weakening the paper. When, therefore, some fifteen years ago, fibrous talc in large quantities, and of marvellous purity and whiteness, was discovered in the neighborhood of the town of Gouverneur, it was not long before the

The theoretical background for calculating friction factors for flow in gas wells by two methods is presented. The first method, requiring pressures, temperatures and specific volumes of the flowing fluids at various depths in the well bore, shows how the mechanical-energy-balance equation for vertical flow may be graphically integrated over the actual path of the expansion of the fluid in the well. Thus, assumptions regarding the effective temperature and effective compressibility of the fluid in the well are avoided. The second method presents an equation derived on a basis of the assumptions that both the temperature and the compressibility are fixed at constant effective values throughout the flowing column of gas. The second method provides a convenient and practical means of calculating friction factors for gas wells and lends itself readily to the problem of calculating subsurface pressures in a flowing gas well. The application of both methods to actual test data taken on a flowing gas well is illustrated in the paper. INTRODUCTION As friction factors for the producing strings of flowing gas wells cannot be measured directly and must be calculated from flow-test data, study of the methods of arriving at friction factors is a necessary adjunct to understanding the characteristics of flow in gas wells. There are two methods of calculating friction factors for gas wells; they differ from one another mainly in the treatment of the path of expansion of the fluid in the well. In the flowing well, the energy consumed in lifting the fluid from the bottom to the top of the well, overcoming the friction between the moving fluid and the pipe walls, and increasing the velocity of the fluid as it flows up the producing string is supplied by expansion of the flowing fluid. The available energy is determined by the expansion of the fluid that follows a path determined by conditions of temperature, compressibility and phase changes of the fluid during the expansion. A means of evaluating the available energy in a flowing gas well and determining the proportion of the available energy used in lifting the gas, overcoming friction, and increasing the velocity of flow is developed in this report. Knowing how much energy is consumed in overcoming friction makes it possible to calculate friction factors for given flow rates in given sizes of pipes in wells. Friction coefficients, as used in this report, are dimension- less proportionality multipliers used in the flow equations to satisfy the equality between the terms of the equation. The square root of the reciprocal of the friction coefficient is termed the friction factor. It has been known for many years that friction factors may be computed directly from mathematical formulas based on certain assumptions regarding the temperature and compressibility of the moving fluid in a well. A general equation is presented in this report without assumptions for vertical flow of fluids and a conventional-type equation is derived on the basis of assumptions that fix the temperature and compressibility at constant values. Accurate pressures at the sand faces in wells are required in the method of determining the productivity of gas wells, as outlined by Rawlins and Schellhardt1 in Bureau of Mines Monograph 7. Where measurements are not made with subsurface-pressure gauge; or static gas columns are unavailable, flowing pressures customarily are calculated at the sand face in the well by the use of the well-known Weymouth formula1. Natural gas engineers have realized that errors introduced by the use of friction factors as given by the Weymouth formula are relatively unimportant in testing low-capacity gas wells; they also know that such factors are important considerations in testing large-capacity gas wells. Accordingly. present research on the productivity of gas wells at the Petroleum Experiment Station of the Bureau of Mines, Bartlesville, Okla., is being directed toward measurement of the pressure loss due to friction in flowing gas wells. It is beyond the scope of this report to show how friction factors vary with rate of flow and in pipes of different diameters, as it is intended only to develop and illustrate the use of mathematical expressions for calculating friction factors from flow-test data. The equations presented apply only to turbulent flow in circular pipes. ENERGY RELATIONS FOR FLOW OF FLUIDS2 The concept of conservation of energy is usually the basis of any study of fluid flow through vertical pipes as in gas wells, horizontal pipe lines, or orifices. Water laws important to the mining industry are those which govern or affect the right to use water, to dispose of water after using it in mining or milling, and to discharge waste material into watercourses. They include statutes and court decisions having general applicability, as well as others that pertain specifically to mining. THE INDUSTRY'S CONTRIBUTION TO WESTERN WATER LAW Despite sharp differences of opinion, the water law the Spaniards brought to the Southwest appears to have included some form of appropriation of water. The Mormons, who settled in Utah in the mid-nineteenth century, also developed a system of appro-priative water titles. But by far the most profound impact on western water law was made by the gold-seekers who flocked to the Sierra Nevada foothills of California after the discovery of gold in 1848. Much of the gold was extracted from the ground by hydraulic or placer mining, and so the miners' rights to the use of water became fundamentally important. Since there was no organized government in the foothills and no laws other than those made by the miners, they helped themselves to the land, the gold, and the water needed to work their claims.1 They established and enforced regulations governing the acquirement and holding of mining claims and their rights to the water they needed.' In 1879 Justice Field, former Chief Justice of the California Supreme Court, spoke for the U. S. Supreme Court in saying that the miners were "emphatically the law-makers, as respects mining, upon the public lands in the State."" Rules of the California mining camps were based on two essential principles: 1) priority in discovering claims and appropriating water by diverting it from streams and putting it to use, and 2) diligence in working claims and applying water in mining. The customs so developed, which were copied in mining areas of other states and territories, were enacted into law in one western jurisdiction after another. They form the basis of what is called the arid-region doctrine of prior appropriation of water, which received the attention of Congress in legislation recognizing and protecting appropriations of water for mining, agriculture, and other purposes on the public domain.' In several western states a great number of water cases decided in the early years involved relative rights to the use of water for mining purposes or for milling connected with mining." The miner's inch, the customary unit for measuring water in the mining camps, is still used in various western communities, although its relation to the cubic foot per second varies from one area to another. Undoubtedly, the miners of a century ago made the major contribution to the appropriation doctrine as it is now recognized and applied throughout the West. What inspired the California gold-seekers to develop these principles? Thoughtful writers have pointed out that their regulations and customs were strikingly characteristic of much earlier mining enterprises in the Old World.D It is said that the right of free mining and free use of flowing water therefor —so similar to the California conditions and practices—-was a part of the customs of Germanic miners in the Middle Ages, that it spread from middle Europe to other countries and colonies, and that the doctrine of prior appropriation was widespread in the important mining regions of the world. Certainly the Forty-niners came to California from many countries. It does not tax the imagination to consider that they may have brought with them some knowledge of the old Germanic customs and applied this knowledge in their new environment. RIGHTS TO USE OF WATER IN GENERAL In the West, rights to the use of water of watercourses fall into two categories—appropriative and riparian. The doctrine of prior appropriation is recognized in each of the 17 western states. The riparian doctrine is recognized concurrently with the appropriation doctrine in some of these states but has been abrogated in the others. The riparian doctrine prevails generally throughout the East, although there is now considerable interest in developing something else. Generally speaking, the appropriation doctrine has been highly developed in the West, whereas the principles of riparian doctrine have been comprehensively established in only a few states throughout the country. The subject of water rights is a big one. Space permits no more than a brief discussion of aspects that bear upon the title of this article. RIGHTS OF PRIOR APPROPRIATION Fundamental to the doctrine of prior appropriation is the principle first in time, first in right. Although in some states there are statutory exceptions. the original and still generally prevailing rule is that the first one who initiates a right to divert and use water of a stream, and who completes his undertaking with reasonable diligence, acquires thereby the first right of appropriation of the specific quantity of water involved. Each succeeding right in point of time is junior to all earlier rights but senior to all later ones. The practical effect of this priority system is that when the water supply is not enough for all, the earliest rights must be fully satisfied before any water may be taken by those later in time. Acquirement of Appropriative Rights: Each of the 17 western states has a statute under which water may be appropriated pursuant to a prescribed procedure. Generally, the first step to be taken by the intending appropriator is to file application in the office of the State Engineer for a permit to make the appropriation. Introduction If a subject this broad were to be covered in even moderate detail, it would require a set of books about the size of an encyclopedia. Since an acceptable length for this paper is a small fraction of one book, it will have to consist of a few samples of the subjects that I think are the most pertinent to World Fossil Fuel Economics. I plan to discuss the trends in world energy demand, particularly in the U. S. and Europe; the consumption patterns and cost patterns of oil, gas and coal; the prospects of synthetics; and some of the effects of government regulation of fuel economics. World Energy Demands Fig. 1 shows Free World energy consumption by principal areas for the period from 1950 to 1970 and a forecast for the period from 1970 to 1985. These figures include only the measurable forms of energy. An example of energy consumption that is not measured is the wood a peasant might cut in the forest and bum in a fireplace to heat his home. This omission probably is a very small part of the total. This forecast is not identical with that of Wayne E. Glenn (see Page 22), but the differences in total energy consumption are not significant. The U. S. consumption, which was 55 percent of the world total in 1950, had declined to 45 percent by 1970, and is expected to decline further to 38 percent by 1985. Western Europe has consumed 28 percent of the total from 1950 to 1970 and is expected to lose share slightly between 1970 and 1985. The most spectacular gainer is Japan, which increased consumption from 2.5 percent in 1950 to 7.5 percent in 1970, and is expected to reach nearly 17 percent by 1985. The over-all Free World total has grown from 62 quadrillion Btu (equivalent to 29 million B/D of crude oil) in 1950 to 151 quadrillion by 1970, an average growth rate of 4.5 percent/year. This total is expected to grow at a rate of 5 percent/year between now and 1985, reaching 315 quadrillion Btu (equivalent to nearly 150 million B/D). Fig. 2 shows which fuels supplied this energy between 1950 and 1970, and gives an estimate of how it will be supplied between 1970 and 1985.

Shortly after becoming one of the van-guard of mine-developers in the State of Virginia, during the year 1883, I called the attention of the Institute to certain deposits of pyrites, which have been largely worked since. In all cases these deposits are covered with iron-ore (limonite), extending 40, 50 or 60 feet from surface to water-level. The several classes of brown iron-ores are found almost continuously along a prominent ridge of mineral-bearing slates, which can be traced from the James river northeasterly to the North Anna, the Rappahannock and the Potomac rivers, crossing the counties of Louisa, Spottsylvania and Stafford. Outcrops are plainly discoverable from end to end of this belt, also, in places, to the right and left of it, and at intervals there are evidences of workings, some of them for known purposes and others of unknown age and meaning. These old workings have an interest aside from the minerals they may contain or may have yielded. I have been engaged during the past five years in the collection of facts concerning them, which might determine definitely the site of those iron-furnaces, placed by tradition within reach of " the towne called Germanna," which were the first ever built in this State or on this continent. The events which led to the establishment of this important industry are sufficiently narrated in a paper written by Mr. R. A. Brock, Secretary of the Virginia Historical Society, and printed in the Proceedings of the National Museum, 1885, page 77, from which I quote the following : " To Virginia, the first of the English settlements in America, belongs the honor of inaugurating within her limits, as a colony, that most important industry, iron manufacture. "The London Company contemplated a variety of manufacturing enterprises from the very beginning of its authority; prominent among them was that of iron. In 1610 Sir Thomas Gates testified before the council of the Company at London, that in Virginia ' there were divers minerals, especially iron-oare,' lying upon the

An improved method for solving dynawzical dislocation problems using a digital computer is described in this paper. Interactions between two distinct types of dislocations were studied: attractive screw dislocations; and Lomer lock forming dislocations. One dislocation is positioned in the lattice and is initially at rest, while the other dislocation is moved through the lattice on an intersecting slip plane at a constant velocity in the range 0.5 to 0.999C. (C is the transverse velocity of sound.) The results obtained from these computations indicate that screw dislocations account for a small fraction of the total strain over a wide portion of the range of velocities studied. They further indicate that mixed dislocations mainly repel other dislocations in the neighborhood of the active glide plane. From this a possible explanation for cell formation is put forth. The density of Lomer locks expected to exist after a strain of 0.2 was found to be 1.4 x 106 cm-2 which is in good agreement with indirect experimental estimates. IN the past, predictions of favorable or nonfavorable dislocation reactions were based on the associated changes in elastic strain energy. Such considerations take no account of the probability of the two dislocations coming into contact to react. Venables1 was the first to approach these probabilities by considering the interactions between two moving screw dislocations on perpendicular glide planes. Because of the restrictive types of dislocations and glide plane geometry employed, his results have limited application to metallic crystals. The work to be presented here develops a general approach to solving dynamical dislocation problems; either dislocation-dislocation interactions, presented here in detail, or dislocation interactions with any other suitably defined stress field. Two types of dislocation-dislocation interactions common to face centered cubic (fee) materials are considered: those between pure screw dislocations of opposite sign on intersecting slip planes and those between mixed dislocations on intersecting slip planes, that can react to form a perfect dislocation. This latter reaction, referred to as the Lomer reaction, produces a locked product dislocation that finds it energitical favorable to disassociate into two Shockley partials and a stair-rod dislocation. This partial configuration known as a Lomer-Cottrell (L-C) lock plays a major role in work hardening of fee crystals. seeger2 names the L-C lock as the prime contributor to Stage II hardening while Kuhlmann-wilsdorf3 and Meakin and Wils- dorf4 also state that it is a significant contributor to work hardening. However, with a few notable exceptions,5-7 direct observations of the Lomer lock and the L-C lock by electron transmission microscopy are scanty, and even these are subject to other interpretations.5,6 In a study of partial dislocations present in austenitic stainless steel, whelan8 did not observe any L-C locks at the head of pile-up groups. This result contradicted existing work hardening theories and led him to postulate an alternate theory based on the stress required to break away dislocations intersecting a pile-up group, from their stacking fault nodes. Due to the importance of the Lomer reaction in producing L-C locks which are an essential feature in current work hardening theories and because there exist no data giving direct quantitative values for the density of locks, and because there has even been some doubt expressed as to whether this important reaction occurs at all, a study of the dynamic behavior of the mixed dislocations which form the Lomer lock was undertaken. Due to their ability to cross-slip with relative ease, screw dislocations play an important role in the deformation of fee crystals. For this reason, the second type of reaction considered here is between screw dislocations of opposite sign. In addition, computations in volving screw dislocation interactions are relatively simple, thus providing a convenient check on the cornputational scheme employed. DEFINITION OF PROBLEM The force exerted on a dislocation due to a generalized stress field is given by the Peach and Koehler9 equation: Here t2 and b2 are respectively the tangent and Burgers vectors of the dislocation, and T1 is the stress dyadic defining the local stress field. The stress field may be externally applied or generated internally by the presence of a lattice defect, such as a second dislocation, as is the case in this work. Frank10 has shown that an equivalent momentum, P, of a screw dislocation can be defined by: Here, EST is the total energy of a screw dislocation and ESo is its rest energy. The left side of Eq. [2] is the time derivative of momentum and the right side is the position derivative of the energy due to the dynamical nature of the dislocation. The total energy of a dislocation is the sum of the potential and kinetic energies. Weertman11 has developed the expressions which were used here; these give the potential and kinetic energies of uniformly moving edge and screw dislocations in an isotropic medium.

In 1978, Anschutz Mining Corp. began efforts to develop the Madison Cobalt Project in southeast Missouri. Preliminary metallurgical studies indicated that intermediate grade cobalt products, suitable for shipment to existing refineries, could be recovered from the sulfide mineralization of the ore body. However, tolling and freight charges were significant, as the refineries were located outside the US. These refineries would not satisfy the goal of strategically insulated production of superalloy-grade cobalt. The acquisition of proven, readily available refinery technologies was then evaluated. However, licensing costs were substantial and the "proven" technologies were not directly applicable to the unique chemistry of Madison materials. Faced with these challenges, Anschutz, in conjunction with the Colorado School of Mines Research Institute, embarked on an effort to develop a sulfate-based separation and refining process. CSMRI performed bench-scale and continuous pilot experiments on solutions generated through other pilot campaigns conducted by Lurgi, Hazen Research, and Sherritt Gordon. The results indicated that cobalt could be selectively extracted from sulfate media using a new generation of organophosphates. The solvent extraction system produced a solution suitable for electrolysis of high-purity cobalt. Preliminary cost studies indicated the novel process was competitive with other refinery systems. Plans to develop the detailed engineering-design information required to commercialize the process were abandoned when the price of cobalt collapsed to less than $17.64/kg ($8.00 per lb).

During the past 15 years, rock mass structural properties have become acknowledged as the focal point for rock slope design. Re- search into the methods for measuring and incorporating structure into the design effort has taken many directions and has produced a variety of useful techniques. Among the findings at Kennecott has been the realization that structure-controlled instability can be categorized as regressive or progressive depending on the relative geometries of slope and structure and on the strength characteristics of the structures. It was further identified that a failure condition can initiate as regressive and in time become progressive should external stimuli increase or structure characteristics be altered due to extensive displacements. The transition point has been shown to be a useful indicator of the expectable collapse time. This paper defines three fundamental failure types as dictated by structure and offers discussion on the practical value of such a classification to slope design and failure control. Several prominent examples of failures typifying the categories of structure- controlled instability are discussed. An application of f allure prediction based on the regressive-to-progressive transition point is described.

IN most branches of the mining industry it is a well-recognized fact that care must be taken to protect the mineral deposit from undue physical injury. It is comparatively easy to grasp this idea when the mineral is a solid and the lives of workmen depend directly upon the care with which it is removed from its natural position, but when the product is a liquid. drawn up from pools several thousand feet beneath the surface of the ground through openings only a few inches in diameter, it requires some imagination to picture underground conditions and the changes which must often occur. The development of the petroleum deposits of California has been attended by numerous accidents, the results of which are readily noticed at the top of the wells and in the profit and loss accounts of the operators. Determination of the cause of these accidents has been the subject of considerable study, which naturally has fallen upon men familiar with technical methods. The greatest damage to the oil deposits of California has resulted from water finding its way into the oil-bearing sands, and it is the purpose of this paper to set forth briefly this phase of the oil industry. Much of the material here presented has previously appeared inn publications issued by the California State Mining Bureau, which, under the direction of State. Mineralogist Fletcher McN. Hamilton, has investigated the subject and taken steps toward improvement of conditions. The writer, having been in charge of this branch of the Bureau work, has gained considerable knowledge of existing conditions.

THE proposed revision of the mining law as set forth in the Arentz Bill, now before Congress, is centered about the pretty commonly acknowledged f act that the present law is outlawed both by the large mining companies and the United States Land Office. By common agreement, the law of the apex is non-opera¬tive as between adjacent properties in many instances, and this practice is becoming more common. - If this is a fact, there is no escape from the conclusion that the law is antiquated and should be revised to meet modern conditions more equitable. The thing to be considered seriously is in what direction and to what extent the laws should be changed. Before deciding this, it is logical to inquire in what particulars the present law is troublesome or useless. This was all threshed out by the committee of the Bureau of Mines that worked out the proposed bill, but their testimony was not placed before the public, so far as 1 am aware. Most mine managers and engineers connected with producing properties are a unit in agreeing that the law as applied to the underground extension of orebodies, that is, the "law of the apex," as it is called, is the source of more litigation and expense than any other phase of the law, or perhaps than all other phases combined. This being true, it seems that this part of the law should be changed. Another phase which is troublesome and will continue to be so long as there is unpatented mineral land on the Public Domain, is the discovery requirement. The present law requires that a dis¬covery be made before a claim is staked and the courts certainly agree that such must be the case before patent issues.

A SERIES of studies of the corrosion of tin is under way in the Metals Research Laboratory at the Carnegie Institute of Technology. The complete program includes examination of the corrosion properties of high-purity tin and the changes produced in these properties by the addition of varying amounts of alloying elements. Other studies of this subject have been made recently under the sponsorship of the International Tin Research and Development Council, but these researches have been confined largely to the weakly acid environments commonly encountered in the canning industry.1 There is little information available regarding the corrosion of tin under alkaline conditions, but such data would be of value, for a large amount of the metal is used under such conditions. The potential measurements to be described were made because they seemed to offer the most rapid method for obtaining a general view of the conditions to be encountered in such service. These experiments will also serve to establish a technique that will be of value in further studies. It must be emphasized that the results reported are those of controlled laboratory experiments and that the conclusions drawn cannot yet be applied to service conditions; rather, they point to the directions in which more exhaustive experimental work may be done to best advantage. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE The first work was devoted entirely to the problem of obtaining reproducible results from a series of potential measurements. Only the methods finally adopted as standard will be described here, except when the variations from these have furnished results of interest. The cell used is shown schematically in Fig. 1. OIL FLOTATION DISCUSSED BY SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA SECTION . A meeting of the Section was held in the home of R. H. Norton, 335 W. 27th Street, on Mar. 10, thirty-two members and five guests being present. Vice-chairman Staunton opened the meeting with a description of an experiment he made with oil flotation, and then introduced the guest and speaker of the evening, L. C. Penhoel, of the South-western Engineering Co., who gave a very interesting and informal talk on the subject of Flotation. During the talk, as points were raised, there was a general discussion, in which valuable information was brought out. A number of examples of successful competitive, results by cyanidation and flotation in large milling plants in this country and Mexico were cited and discussed. The latter part of the meeting was devoted to a discussion of the bill introduced in the California State Senate, to license and register engineers. Mr. Ernest Strout gave a most favorable opinion of the principal of licensing mining engineers from his extensive experience in the working out of such a law on the Rand. All members who spoke were opposed to this bill as drafted but felt that the subject was of too great importance to the profession to attempt to amend the present bill in the week or two that remains, and that the passage of a bill that was so crude and inefficient for the achievement of the results desired, would harm the engineering profession. After the meeting adjourned a short time was spent in social intercourse, during which light refreshments were served. The appreciation and thanks of the Section is extended to Mr. and Mrs. R. H. INTRODUCTION The Basalt Waste Isolation Project, conducted by Rockwell Hanford Operations under contract to the U.S. Department of Energy, is assessing the feasibility of the disposal of commercial radioactive spent fuel/high-level waste in deep geologic formations in basalts beneath and within the Hanford Site in southeastern Washington State. The Basalt Waste Isolation Project mission is to identify and characterize a potential geologic repository site in basalt and to develop associated facilities and technology required for the potential permanent isolation of radioactive wastes in basalt formations. In support of the Basalt Waste Isolation Project, a laboratory testing program was conducted to evaluate the performance of the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research's "Doorstopper" biaxial strain cell. To support site characterization studies and the design of repository openings, in situ stress measurements will be conducted within the reference repository horizon (~970 m). The Doorstopper is one of the instruments being considered for use in these measurements. It was selected because it requires only a small volume of work to achieve stress relief, which is important in a closely jointed basalt. Also, test durations are short, permitting a large number of measurements to be made within a given time to increase confidence in the results. Within the reference repository horizon, temperatures are expected in the range of 40º to 60°C with a humidity of up to 100%. For this testing program, test conditions were selected to closely resemble those expected within the repository horizon. The Doorstopper test, mainly developed by Leeman (1964), is a strain rosette relief method of measuring rock stress in situ. The Doorstopper consists of a four element, 45º strain gage rosette

Plant sites for the light metal industry must be located where ample low cost power is available. In the first half of the century hydroelectric development was the only source of this power-now the best sites have been exploited and those remaining do not promise enough water to permit year-round capacity power plant operation. In searching for economic plant sites engineers have concentrated on locations with vast water power potential. Olin Mathieson Chemical Corp. has been studying the economics of developing water power to make aluminum. However natural gas, lignite, and even atomic energy have also been considered as possible power sources for aluminum production. Economic studies have given consideration not merely to investment and production costs, but to total costs of delivering fabricated products to the market center of the U. S. When delivered costs are considered and when full account is taken of the newest techniques of mining bituminous coal and utilizing it to make electric power, one arrives at the inescapable conclusion that coal has emerged as the economic answer to American aluminum production.

SINCE the operative word in the subject on which I have been asked to speak is "international," I need hardly emphasize before such an audience as this that it is one which calls for some discretion on my part at the present juncture of world affairs, since, in some respects, it may not be devoid of a controversial aspect. For though the war is over, it has left behind it a sorry state of health in the political and economic complex of the world we live in; and however different may be the impact of these factors on each of us, yet none of us can any longer hope to devise a system or policy to escape from much of its controversial heat, or evade the obligation of doing what we can to diminish it. I would like, therefore, to consider with you how one great form of world enterprise whose range is coextensive with material civilization itself-that is, the Petroleum Industry-can make and is competent to make, a contribution to international health; for it is now an agreed commonplace that oil is arterial in the world's system and we need no telling that a healthy body needs healthy blood. Before embarking on my subject, let me assure you that I have no need to be told that this country before all others-and for obvious reasons is the major sounding board of opinion in matters affecting most aspects of the petroleum industry-technical, economic, national and international (but, may I please add parenthetically, not to the exclusion of quite a

INTRODUCTION In early 1978, engineering personnel at The Carter Mining Company began using photogrammetry coupled with a computer modeling technique to aid in mine planning efforts. The decision to develop this approach was based on the following needs: 1. A method to accurately capture excavated quantities for reporting purposes, 2. A method to produce accurate up-to-date maps for planning purposes, and 3. A computer-based mine-planning technique that would be compatible with techniques used in the past. The system developed utilizes a photogrammetric contractor to provide thousands of aerially-surveyed data points for input into the computer system. Each month the Rawhide and Caballo mines are flown by the photogrammetric contractor. The terrain of the active pit area is digitized and punched out on computer cards. This information is read into The Carter Mining Company's computer facilities, and an updated two-dimensional topographic grid model of the pit is generated. This surface is used to generate quantities moved during the month, to update isopachs, and to update quantities contained in fixed block progression polygons used for forecasting purposes. A numerical technique has been developed to permit estimating the pressure gradient associated with laminar flow of thixotropic liquids through long Pipelines. For this purpose the pipeline is divided into a number of radial and longitudinal increments within which rheological properties of the fluid may be considered as constant at any time. Then, provided only that the fluid flow curve is defined at every duration of shear, it is possible to predict the instantaneous pressure gradient at any cross-section along the pipeline for each desired flow rate and pipe size. The technique consists of an iterative integration of shear rate to establish the appropriate value of the wall shear stress at each location. Consistency of fluid in the increment is determined by the flow history of that increment, while the radial flow associated with variations in velocity profile is accounted for by adjusting the width and radial position of the increment. A number of pressure profiles, computed at each of several flow rates, provide a convenient basis for pipeline design and pump selection. INTRODUCTION In recent years considerable attention has been given to predicting pressure drop associated with the isothermal laminar flow of time-independent non-Newtonian fluids in pipes and annuli. 6,11,12 The approach generally has been to develop analytical relationships between flow rate and pressure drop based on simple constitutive models which hopefully provide an approximate description of the rheological properties of the fluid. Analytical solutions are highly desirable since the influence of all pertinent parameters can be readily determined. Unfortunately, however, this approach is restricted to simple flow geometries and- frequently leads to erroneous results due to inadequacies in the model. In certain cases a solution may be obtained through applying appropriate numerical techniques.l,14 For example, a digital computer program is available for predicting the velocity profile and pressure drop encountered by any Newtonian or time-independent non-Newtonian fluid flowing under laminar conditions in a cylindrical pipe or annulus.l In this paper the consistency behavior of the fluid need only be described in terms of basic rheological data. Analyzing flow systems involving fluids with time-dependent rheological characteristics is considerably more complicated since substantial changes in consistency may occur because of sustained shear action. This sensitivity to shear frequently persists for several hours. Consequently, variations in pressure drop and/or flow rate resulting from the aging process and addition of unsheared or partially sheared fluid to the system must be considered for purposes of pipeline design. This paper outlines a numerical method for predicting the transient and steady-state laminar flow behavior of a thixotropic liquid in a pipeline of arbitrary length (i.e., at a specified constant flow rate, the instantaneous pressure gradient may be determined at any time after start up and at any location along the pipeline). Several such pressure gradient profiles, computed at several flow rates, may be combined to produce a complete portrait of the system response. This flow portrait provides a reasonable basis for pipeline design and for selecting a suitable pump characteristic. TIME-DEPENDENT RHEOLOGICAL BEHAVIOR The most familiar time-dependent rheological properties are those exhibited by thixotropic liquids. Many of these materials, particularly thixotropic crude oils, generally display an apparent yield stress in that a finite pressure gradient is required to initiate flow. THIS paper has been prepared with the principal objective of recording the results of the Bureau of Mines exploration of five major clay deposits in the Western Region. It is based mainly on data contained in unpublished Bureau of Mines reports. Acknowledgment is made to the Federal Geological Survey for its cooperative work with the Bureau of Mines, to the various State geological and mining departments, and other State and local agencies. CLAY EXPLORATION BY THE BUREAU OF MINES Much has been written and published on clays and clay deposits relating to their refractory, ceramic, and other qualities but such literature is lacking in analyses of the available alumina content of the clays and provides little indication of their possibilities as a source of alumina. With this new objective in view, a great many of the known clay deposits were reexamined and new ones discovered. The Bureau of Mines made preliminary examination of numerous areas in the western United States. Five of those most favorably indicated were systematically drilled, and in each a large amount of high-alumina clay has been found. These five major projects are Molalla and Hobart Butte, in western Oregon; Cowlitz-Castle Rock, in southwestern Washington; Lone, in California; and the Olson-Troy area in Idaho (Fig. I). Preliminary scout drilling was done in the Stockton deposit at Coeur d'Alene, Idaho; the Whiteware deposit near Lewistown, Mont.; and 13 areas in the Spokane or eastern Washington region, where the most favorably indicated area, known as the Excelsior, is now being drilled more systematically. Preliminary drilling was undertaken in numerous areas adjacent to the major deposits and others more remote. As a result, large additional clay possibilities were found. THE CLAY DEPOSITS The clay deposits under consideration are of the sedimentary or transported types, parts of which have been altered further by the agencies of weathering, ground water, or hydrothermal action. There are extensive deposits of residual clays in northern Idaho and in eastern Washington, but they have been found to be low in the available alumina and to contain much free quartz, mica, and unaltered feldspar. To be of value, they must first be subjected to beneficiation to remove these gangue minerals. The sedimentary clays have been derived largely from the decomposition, erosion, and transportation of granites, gneisses, schists, and basalts. At Molalla, some
