ThE superior performance of nonsag tungsten wire in lamps has been ascribed to the large-grained micro-structure that can be developed in it. The orientations of these large grains have been studied several times; most published data1-' appear to be similar to those plotted in Fig. 1. These new data were obtained by X-ray back-reflection Laue technique from all of the large grains occurring in thirteen different wires that had been heated at the lowest possible temperature for the formation of large grains. Here the wire axis is plotted in terms of the principal directions of the cube. Rosi decided that the preferred orientation of the large crystals could be described by a single ideal orientation, (531), being parallel to the wire axis.' Rieck2,3 and Mannerkoski' have essentially confirmed this finding. Opinsky, Orehotsky, and Seigle argued that the data suggest that (211) is parallel to the wire axis instead of a single ideal orientation.5 This {211} contains the (531) ideal orientation and would appear to be a more general case. Ahlborn and Wassermann report that their orientation data stretch from ( 110) through (531) to (311) 8 This is part of the locus of (211). All these investigators have determined the orientations of the large grains by back-reflection Laue techniques. They have all obtained essentially similar results. On the other hand, Swalin and Geisler, who obtained their data by neutron diffraction, indicated that the preferred orientation of the large grains in doped wire is (110) .7 These findings cannot presently be reconciled with the pole density data described in the previous paragraph. Rosi1 and Rieck2 have advanced arguments about how their orientations could occur. Nevertheless, the crystallographic link between the (110) (cold-worked) fiber texture and the preferred orientation of the large grains has remained missing. This link can be provided through the concept of coincidence-type boundaries. Such boundaries separate two grains that have a certain number of common lattice sites. Coincidence relationships that result from rotations about low index directions are given by Brandon et a1 .' What is desired is a calculation of those orientations that bear a coincidence relationship with the (110) fibers of the cold-worked matrix. This situation arises in the following fashion. Heating the tungsten wire for a combination of time and temperature falling short of the formation of the nonsag structure yields a structure that is still fibrous in nature and the preferred orientation remains (110). During grain growth, the growing grain is in contact with these fibers. It is hence possible that the entire process may begin by the passage of a coincidence boundary into a (110) fiber. The calculations were carried out analytically and checked graphically. Following Brandon et a1.,8 coincidence relationships from 1 in 5 to 1 in 19 have been considered. The results of the calculations are given in Fig. 2. Of the coincidences examined, some of those occurring upon rotation about ( 110) come closest to the experimental points in Fig. 1. Nineteen of the twenty-three data points in Fig. 1 can be attributed to the ideal orientations A, B, C, and D in Fig. 2. As determined analytically, three crystals lie within 4 deg of point A, four lie within 21/2 deg of point B, eleven lie within 5 deg of point C, and one lies within 1 deg of point D-a total of nineteen. The off-lying points are near the |110| point of the triangle.

The discovery and development of explosives mark one of the most important findings in the history of civilization. Without explosives our vast economic enterprise concerning the mining of coal, copper, iron, aluminum, and various other ores could not function. Explosives are used in all kinds of construction works, in the razing of old buildings, blasting of trenches, driving of tunnels, and in many other instances common to our everyday life. For these reasons explosives are rightfully referred to as the forerunner of progress. An explosive may be defined as a substance (usually a mixture) that, when flame or shock is applied, yields readily to rapid combustion or oxidation, accompanied by the formation of such relatively large quantities of gases as to produce much violence and pressure which, in turn, react against their surroundings and cause what is termed an explosion. By their very nature the action of explosives is destructive and disruptive of adjacent materials. Decomposition of explosives can occur through deflagration, which is rapid burning or combustion, as in the case of black powder, or through detonation, which is an almost instantaneous disruption, as in the case of dynamites and blasting agents. HISTORY OF BLASTING WITH EXPLOSIVES At one time workmen obtained stone blocks for building by grooving the rock with crude picks, driving wooden wedges into niches in the rock, and pouring water on the wedges; the swelling of the wood forced out the blocks. As late as the 17th century, fires were placed against the face of rock to crack it, and water was sometimes dashed on the heated rock to shatter it by sudden cooling. STUDIES upon the rates of oxidation of copper alloys containing small quantities of the alloying elements1,2 have shown that steady growth of the scales at predictable rates is limited to a small concentration range and to oxidation at temperatures above 600°C., whereas unpredictable and erratic oxidation behavior is found with alloys containing larger additions and at low temperatures. The latter effect appears to be associated with modifications in the geometric disposition of the oxides. At low concentrations of the baser elements in copper, simple oxidation behavior is typified by the formation of two distinguishable zones of oxidation: (I) a subscale composed of discrete particles of the oxide of the alloying element embedded in substantially pure copper and (2) an external scale composed of cuprous oxide (with a very thin layer of cupric oxide on the outside) containing particles of the alloying element distributed throughout, but most profusely near the metal surface (see Fig. 2, top). Where this type of structure obtains, the process of oxidation is believed to be implemented, and its rate controlled, by the diffusion of the reacting elements through a continuous matrix phase; i.e., through the alpha (metallic) phase of the subscale and alloy and through the cuprous oxide of the external scale. Copper is presumed to diffuse outward through the cuprous oxide layer to the external surface, where it reacts to form more cuprous oxide.3 Oxygen is delivered at the oxide-metal interface in the form of cuprous oxide, which may either react with the alloying element to deposit its oxide at the inner limit of the external scale or dissolve in the pure copper that remains at the surface of the metal after it has become depleted in its oxidizable alloying elements. Both oxygen and the alloying element are pictured as diffusing through the metal, the oxygen inward and the alloying element outward. Where the two diffusion streams meet in sufficient concentration the oxide of the subscale is precipitated. If the oxygen pressure in the surrounding atmosphere is just below the pressure necessary to maintain cuprous oxide undecomposed, no cuprous oxide can be formed; some of the oxide of the alloying element may form upon the external surface, if its decomposition pressure is below that of cuprous oxide, and a normal subscale appears. This condition is achieved experimentally by enclosing the alloy with cuprous oxide together with an excess of copper. At temperatures from 600°C. downward, the precipitated oxides tend to accumulate at the grain boundaries of the alpha phase where a relatively small volume establishes a partial barrier to the diffusion of the reactants. The possibility has been mentioned that large pressure gradients in a solution gas driven field caused by high production rates might lead to a reduction in the ultimate recovery obtainable compared to that which would be obtained by a very slow rate of production. In the present study the reservoir conditions accompanying a high rate of production and the corresponding ultimate recovery were compared with those obtained if the reservoir were produced at some marginal rate throughout its entire life. The method of calculation involved the application of fluid flow - material balance analysis to a series of successive steady state conditions in the reservoir. In the case studied very little difference in recovery was obtained at the abandonment pressure. An analysis of the basic factors involved indicates that the sane results would hold for considerable variation in properties of reservoir fluids, permeability of the formation or well spacing. Even if the reservoir has a water drive it appears that no harm will be done by- open flow production if the rate is cut back before any appreciable free gas is produced. However, any condition which leads to disproportionate withdrawal rates and which causes large pressure differences over large areas might result in substantial loss in ultimate recovery. INTRODUCTION When the pressure declines in a reservoir, gas is evolved from solution causing a shrinkage in the reservoir oil so that a stock tank barrel of oil with its residual dissolved gas occupies a smaller volume than originally. For a given reservoir oil saturation, therefore. stock tank oil content will be higher at the lower pressure. At the same time the evolved gas which remains in the reservoir reduces the reservoir oil saturation, and this would be expected perhaps to cause a reduction in stock tank oil content. However, around the well the shrinkage occurs so rapidly that stock tank oil may actually accumulate in this region in spite of the simultaneous reduction in reservoir oil saturation. If this accumulation should continue, spreading into a larger zone, the loss might be appreciable and because larger pressure gradients accompany higher rates the accumulation might possibly be large if wells are produced at too high a rate. It is the purpose of this paper to determine the effect of rate of flow on ultimate recovery by solution gas drive. The problem under consideration involves the unsteady state flow of oil in a closed radial system from which oil is produced by the evolution of gas as a finite drawdown is estalllished and the reservoir pressure declines. A somewhat similar unsteady state production problem dealing, however, with a linear system has been considered by Muskat and Meres, but these authors do not discuss the effects which rate may have on recovery. Other methods have been reported for estimaling recovery as a function of pressure decline when producing at an infinitesimal rate, and Muskat and Taylor' have shown the effect of fluid and reservoir characteristics on recovery under these conditions. Assuming steady state to exist, Babson has given a procedure for computing the decline in well productivity as the field is depleted, and Moyer has combined these methods to estimate abandonment conditions and the resulting ultimate recovery. These latter approaches to the problem either do not consider the effect of rate or assume steady state can be established. In detail this paper presents the behavior of the reservoir producing under unsteady state conditions and considers the effect of production rate during this unsteady state flow on the recovery attained. The analysis also shows that there will exist at abandonment a type of steady state, and on this basis a method has been clevelopetl for rapid calculation of abandonment conditions.

The chance that a Howe Memorial Lecturer will be able to refer back to a personal contact with the distinguished metallurgist for whom this lectureship is named grows steadily I I did not have the pleasure of his personal acquaintance, but I did receive from him in 1916, quite unexpectedly, a letter commenting On a paper that I had recently published27 On "Types of Prismatic Structure in Igneous Rocks." The paper was written for geologists and petrologists, but it had an application, naturally, to the crystallization of iron and steel in a mold. The letter impressed me at the time, and still does, with the breadth of of Howe's interests and his perseverance in keeping up with the progress of any branch of knowledge that had metallurgical connotations. Scope of the Lecture During several years preceding the date mentioned I had worked in collaboration with Arthur L. Day and E. T. Allen8 at the Geophysical Laboratory, Carnegie Institution of Washington, on the temperature scale as defined by the nitrogen thermometer at high temperatures. Later (1928-1947) I had the opportunity of helping to apply this experience to the pyro-metric problems of the steel industry. Because of the range of its temperatures, the multiplicity of the methods used, and the variety of its purposes, pyrometry in the open-hearth process has always offered a fertile field for both research and development. I am therefore devoting an hour to the subject of temperatures in the basic open-hearth furnace, the furnace that makes most of our steel in the united States. I would direct your attention particularly to the choice of the first two words in the title of the Lecture. One sometimes hears or reads of the ((temperature of such-and-such a furnace," as if it were a single, measurable, characteristic quantity. I need hardly emphasize to any one who has ever operated a furnace or a kiln that " temperature of the furnace " is a meaningless phrase. Even if we confine our attention to the space enclosed by the roof, walls, and hearth of an open-hearth furnace, it is doubtful whether any such space has ever been so uniform in temperature that the phrase would have a meaning. In any furnace, there are many different temperatures, capable of being measured at many different places, and actually being measured for several different purposes. These pyrometric purposes, methods, and results, if given in detail, would expand this lecture into a book on the basic open-hearth process. I must therefore confine myself to a statement of the range of temperatures as they have been observed in various parts of the furnace, indicating in a general way why they are measured, and mentioning the methods that are available without attempting to describe these

THE United Verde mine is in the north central part of Arizona, on the. north-easterly slope of the Black Hills, near the town of Jerome. Ore was first discovered in the district about 1875, and the first mining claims were located by M. A. Ruffner and associates in 1877. In 1888 the late Senator William A. Clark secured control of the property and under his ownership it developed into one of the country's most important copper producers. The property was sold to the Phelps Dodge Corporation in 1935, and since then has been under this Corporation's management. Except for shutdowns caused by general world-market conditions, production has been continuous from 189o to date. GEOLOGY The mineralized zone ranges in area from approximately 12 acres to less than 5 acres. All mineralization occurs in the pre-Cambrian intrusives. The first intrusion, according to geologic records, was the quartz porphyry, which later was intruded by augite diorite. Following the diorite intrusion through a series of intrusions of lesser magnitude, a pipelike mass of massive sulphide, quartz and rock was formed. The diorite forms the hanging wall of this mass, and the porphyry the footwall. Between the footwall and the sulphide a band of chlorite schist was formed, probably owing to metamorphic conditions. Commercial ore occurs along the contact of the schist and sulphide extending into the sulphide, sometimes entirely through the schist, and fingering out into the porphyry. The ore deposit was formed by replacement similar to deposits formed in limestone areas. Faulting and deformation occurred in pre-Cambrian times and again in the Tertiary period, removing approximately 2000 ft. from the top of the main United Verde ore body, forming the United Verde Extension ore body, the only other major ore body in the district. Major development work has shown that the sulphide mass extends to the 3300-ft. level, and diamond drilling below this level has indicated that the mass might extend below the 3700-ft. level, but in a diminished quantity. While many copper minerals exist in the mine, the chief commercial mineral is chalcopyrite. A plan and vertical section of the mineralized zone showing the principal geological features is shown in Figs. I and 2. GENERAL DESCRIPTION AND PHYSICAL CONDITION OF MINE After over 50 years of active production, ore still exists on almost every level of the mine. This condition is due to many causes -mine fires, which broke out as early as 1894, caused the abandonment of certain areas; subsidence and ground movements retarded the cleaning up of others. Furthermore, in the early days there was such an abundance of ore that when mining became difficult it was a simple matter to replace the production by going to a deeper level. This paper describes the tempetrature, solute (gold), and orientalion dependence of the plastic rleforlirnlion of silver single crystals. The virgin flow stress, To, and its temperatutre dependence incrense with increase in solute concentration. el decreases with decrease in temperature below room teiirperature and with increase in solute coucentralion. The dependence of 011 on temperature arid solute sontenl is due to the dependence of Ts on the two variables. An increase in ts, due to either the temperature or the solute conlent, results in a decrease of e11 in crystals of single-slip orientation and an increase of 011 in crystals of' (100) find (111) orientation. is orientation-dependent and at all the temperatures and in all the materials studied. The Leveling off of the engineering stress-strain curve in crystals of (100) 07-ientotion at a stress tl, is associated with extensive cross slib. The temperature and strain -rate dependence of tl are similar to those of indicating that a rate process is the cause 01 this phenomenon. The plastic deformation of silrer crystals of (110) orientation is multiple to that of crystals of single-slip orientation. THE work hardening of fcc crystals has been the subject of intensive investigations in the past 15 years. The effect of orientation, deformation temperature, solutes, second phase or precipitates, strain rate, etc., has been studied in a number of fcc metals.'-5 In spite of the considerable amount of work reported on the dependence of work hardening on the orientation, temperature, and solute concentration, certain aspects of the plastic deformation of fcc crystals have not been clarified. For instance, with the exception of a few investigations,6-8 where crystals of multiple-slip orientations have been studied, almost all the studies have been on crystals of single-slip orientations. Hence, a major portion of this study has been devoted to the dependence of plastic deformation on the multiplicity of slip systems and the enhanced possibility of dislocation interactions resulting from such multiplicity. Further, the abnormally low rate of work hardening observed at large strains at certain temperatures in crystals of the (100) orienta-tion 6-8has not been explained satisfactorily. It is the aim of this study to clarify this aspect of the orientation and temperature dependence of the plastic deformation of fcc single crystals. The work-hardening characteristics of single crystals of aluminum of ( 110) orientation have been studied at room temperatur "'12 and above." They have not been studied at temperatures where the virgin flow stress is dependent on temperature or where, in Seeger's terminology is important. The work hardening of single crystals of (110) orientation is of interest for another reason. As shown in Table I, the dislocation reactions that are possible in the (110) orientation are similar in certain respects to those that are possible in the (100) orientation. Hence, the deformation of single crystals of silver of (110) orientation was studied in the temperature range 100° to 900°K at intervals of 200°K. The effect of solute concentration on the plastic deformation of fcc single crystals of single-slip orientation has been studied by several investiaators.> In all of these investigations—with the exception of Ref. 20—single crystals of identical orientation have not been used, with the result that the orientation dependence of plastic deformation is superimposed on the effect of the solute. In addition, the effect of the solute on the work-hardening characteristics of single crystals of multiple-slip orientations has not been studied by the previous

Equilibrium in the reaction of hydrogen gas with oxygen in liquid nickel, iron, and their alloys has been studied at temperatures of 1500° to 1700°C. The equilibrium con^stant, 0/p, [% O], is greater in nickel then in iron by a factor of 45 at 1594 C. In the alloy steel range, the activity coefficient of oxygen is slightly increased by the presence of nickel. NICKEL is more resistant to oxidation than is iron, in both the solid and the liquid state. The solubility of oxygen,' however, is greater in nickel than in iron. The two metals and their liquid alloys constitute an interesting series of solvents in which the chemical behavior of oxygen can be studied by methods similar to those used for liquid iron.' Experimental Method The furnace assembly, including the tube for preheating the entrant gas, was the same as that described by Gokcen and Chipman. " controlled mixture of water vapor, hydrogen, and argon preheated to approximately the melt temperature impinged upon the surface of the liquid metal. The charge, weighing about 35 g, was held in an alumina crucible at constant temperature in the gas stream for a prolonged period, then quenched in a stream of cold helium, sampled, and analyzed for oxygen by the vacuum fusion method. The temperature of the liquid metal was measured by a Leeds and Northrup optical pyrometer which had been checked against a similar instrument certified by the National Bureau of Standards. The freezing point of electrolytic iron in hydrogen, taken as 153j°C, was used for frequent checks. This point and the emissivity determined by Dastur and Gokcen" established the transmissivity of the optical system. The emissivities of Fe-Ni alloys at 1535" are known from the experiments of Smith and Chipman,h nd it was assumed that the variation with temperature is parallel with that of iron. Recorded temperatures are probably accurate within k5"C. Preparation of Gas Mixtures—Since the ratio H,O:H, had to be much higher for nickel than for iron, it was found convenient to construct two separate systems for gas preparation. In both cases, the ratio of argon to the sum of the other two gases was at least 4, the proportion of hydrogen and water vapor being varied to produce H,O:H, ratios from 0.2 to 70. The primary purpose of the argon was to diminish the errors caused by thermal separation' in the gas phase. In addition, its presence lowered the saturation temperature required for a given H,O:H, ratio and minimized the difficulty of preventing condensation. Both systems were modifications of the one used by Dastur and Chipman.' For H,O:HI ratios greater than 2, welding-grade argon purified by passage over magnesium chips at 620°C was mixed with hydrogen produced in the electrolytic cell shown in Fig. 1. The design was based on a cell used by Bodenstein and Pohl," the important features of which area nickel wire cathode and sodium hydroxide solution as the electrolyte. The rate of hydrogen evolution was controlled by a calibrated ammeter and a rheostat in the circuit, the current efficiency being taken as 100 pct. Precise control of the argon flow rate at about 300 ml per min was achieved by means of a capillary flowmeter having a controlled pressure drop. The molar flow rate was measured volumetrically before each run, and a constant flowmeter setting was maintained thereafter. The A-H, mixture passed through a water saturator of the type previously described," the saturation temperature being maintained automatically with a fluctuation of k0.04"C. The tube between saturator and furnace was heated by a resistance winding. The system was of all Pyrex construction with the exception of the stainless steel tube containing magnesium chips. THE safety of mine workers has received more attention from both State and Federal law-making bodies than any other industry, a fact that shows clearly the hazardous nature of the industry. The last, but by no means the least, of the measures adopted for the protection of mine workers, is workmen's compensation legislation. This is proving to be a powerful instrument for greater safety in the industries, from the fact that special stress is laid not on how the accident happened or who may have been responsible for it, but on how badly the employee is hurt by it. The injured person does not have to employ lawyers to prove his case, because the mere fact of his employment is proof of his right to compensation. The immediate effect of such legislation is the certainty confronting the mine operator that he must pay out large sums for every accident, regardless of its cause, thus adding materially to the cost of the production of his coal. This fact furnished to the operator the strongest incentive to reduce the causes of accidents; not that the operator has ever lacked reasonable consideration for the welfare of his employees and a proper humane interest in their safety, but his engrossment in earning his daily livelihood has been so great that he has not felt that he had the time to devote to the safety of the operation. This time he must now find because of the actual-cash value of the prevention of accidents in his mines. This agency alone proved inadequate to bring about a material improvement because operators have always been willing enough to improve safety conditions when possible to do so within reasonable limits of their financial ability. The requirement in the Workmen's Compensation Laws of several of the States, that the mine operator shall insure as a guarantee of his ability to meet his compensation obligations, has furnished the needed incentive, moral and financial, necessary to the prompt and effective dissemination of a more general knowledge of the causes and

The processing of fine particles inevitably produces slimes. These present a dewatering problem, for which gravity thickening provides a partial or preliminary solution. The paper shows the effects of practical factors in carrying out laboratory sizing tests for thickeners. Several methods of determining thickener unit area have been compared for a lightly coagulated phosphate slurry and a highly flocculated kaolin slurry. Practical techniques of mixing and flocculant addition have significant effects on batch settling data. Pulp temperature and cylinder dimensions are very important. Errors in sizing thickeners for highly flocculated slurries by the standard methods are discussed. Such methods are suitable for less compressible slurries, however. Rules of thumb for flocculant selection are given.

This paper examines the application of gelatin mixture models to the study of factors such as gravity effects, tectonic and residual stresses, anisotropy, physical nonlinearity, time-dependent behavior of the rock mass and connectedness of the geologic space. The technique of calibrating gelatin mixtures proposed by Richards and Mark in 1966 is applied to the particular problem considered. Similitude relationships between model and prototype are discussed with reference to the constitutive equations describing the physical behavior of the rock mass. The interaction between two openings in a linearly elastic medium, under conditions of plane strain, is used as an illustrative example with the view to describing the history of stress and deformation changes on the rock medium and lining around a slusher drift while undercuts are made in block caving. The prediction of the displacement, stress field and mode of fracture associated with a given rock structure, its initial stress field, and its physical properties is essential to rock mechanics and ground control. The basic approach is to assume the rock mass to behave as a continuous, homogeneous, and isotropic medium. The classical theory of elasticity is the simplest theory based on such a concept. Specification of the elastic constants, the initial state of stress in the ground, and the boundary conditions on stress and displacement allows one to predict stress and displacement within the body. Subsequently, provided that a criterion which governs rock fracture under various stress conditions has been established, a stability analysis of the rock structure can be performed. A natural extension of the present knowledge consists of removing some of the simplifying assumptions which characterize the analytical solutions based on the classical theory of elasticity. Complex geometry, the significance of tectonic and residual stresses, anisotropy, physical nonlinearity, time-dependent behavior of the rock mass and connectedness of the geologic space are some of the important factors which are neglected in the classical approach. A better insight into the real problem can be attained with either the finite element method of stress analysis or an experimental technique. The former has already been applied with success on several occasion 1-4 and is destined to render great service in the field of rock mechanics and ground control. The latter, which will be considered in this paper, has been used extensively in applications too numerous to be enumerated. Experimental technique involves either prototype testing, if the area to be studied is accessible, or model testing. Two- and three-dimensional photo-elastic analyses are very convenient means of obtaining the stress distribution in models of complex geometry. In general, such analyses are confined to studies of stress fields around openings which are sufficiently far removed from the surface boundary so that the stresses in their neighborhood are practically equal to those produced by an initial uniform stress field; i.e., so that gravitational effects are negligible. There are, however, many rock structures where these effects must be taken into account to attain a more realistic representation of the problem. Surface and near surface rock structures, systems of openings interacting with one another, and structural components loaded only by their own weight are some of the obvious examples. This paper was written to show how factors neglected in the usual analysis based on the classical theory of elasticity, can be taken into account when gelatin mixture models are used inconjunction with photoelastic methods. MANY are the salts produced. by Nature in various regions and parts of the world, as Pliny shows in his History. Likewise, many are the differences among things that are salty and from which salt can be extracted, as, for instance, all the lyes from any kind of ashes and the urine of all animals. But because these are not things that give men the useful elements necessary to life, I shall omit speaking of them in detail with the exception of some of the more notable ones, and I shall tell you that I find that men proceed in only two ways in order to have a sufficiency for their needs. One is that of extracting it from the salty waters of the sea itself, or from springs, with a certain technique [34v] adapted to the places, either by congealing or by evaporation; and the other is that of mining it from the earth. The latter salt is clear and beautiful, and it is mined from mountains, already made by Nature in the form of stone without the aid of art. All these salts have more or less efficacy* according to the fineness or coarseness of their earthy elemental mixture, and according to the provinces and places where they are found generated. At present it is impossible to estimate closely the amount of oil obtainable from a given area of land. However, after the completion of a few properly distributed prospect wells, one can calculate the approximate yield of the sands penetrated, with a probable error of say 50 per cent. Even rough predictions of this kind are of value in large operations. Without wells upon it, one can never be absolutely certain that an area will produce any oil whatever, and one can only indulge in wild guesses of the probable productive area, before the geological structure has been carefully contoured and the top of the basal water plotted on a map. This requires wells. At times it is desirable to form an idea of the possible yield of oil in advance of drilling, as in cases where the price asked for undeveloped land seems too high, but where the probability of finding oil is furnished by neighboring development, supported by the geology. In such cases the most one can do is to make an estimate of possible maximum yield, which may of course far exceed results, and which is of use mainly in the prevention of excessive initial investment. The method is very significant in a general way, as in regions like the Bighorn Basin, Wyoming, where the productive sands in the Cretaceous shale are so few and so thin and fine that they cannot develop very great production, although the high quality of the oil probably will counterbalance this defect sufficiently to give local profit in favorable areas. Reservoir Capacity of Sands.—The porosity of a stratum is the measure of its maximum reservoir capacity for liquids and gases. The porosity may be determined experimentally and must be used in connection with the total volume of the sand.
