IN discussing the problem of abnormal magnetic polarization, C. A. Heiland1? emphasized the unfortunate fact that our knowledge of the geological and physical conditions relating to such occurrences is very limited and that a more detailed insight into their physical causes would be extremely valuable for interpreting measured anomalies. He also pointed out that to arrive at quantitative physical formulas that would express the conditions that cause abnormal polarization many more occurrences of the kind would have to be recorded. The first part of this paper is a contribution to such descriptions.

Y.-Immediately after the creation of the Naval Consulting Board, Admiral Strauss, Chief of the Bureau of Ordnance of the Navy, told members of the Board that the most important problem for the scientists to solve was erosion in large guns. The Navy, for years, had been working on the problem with marked suceess, but there was much yet remaining to be accomplished. As Chairman of the Committee on Ordnance and Explosives of the Naval Consulting Board, I communicated with several experts in the manufacture of steel, principal among whom was Prof. Howe. He generously agreed to help in every way possible, and the work that he has done and the time that he has spent upon it can he appreciated only by reading his paper. Prof. Howe asked for some rings. from a, certain 14-in. gun which Admiral Strauss had mentioned in particular, and in which, he had informed us, at each shot the bore of the gun, was enlarged about 0.001 in.,' and that after a relatively small number of rounds it was considerably eroded. It has puzzled scientists for a long time to account for the peculiar erosive effect produced by the powder gases in a gun, arid: what Prof. Howe has done in his paper is worthy of Sherlock Holmes. The Duval Corp. porphyry copper deposits at Copper Canyon and Copper Basin, though widely separated, form an econornic unit requiring integrated exploitation. Contrasts in mineralization, host rocks, and mode of occurrence present unique mining and milling problems. Mixed oxide-sulfide ore is treated in extensive dump leaching facilities in both areas. Complex Cu-Au-Ag ore is treated in a 4000-tpd mill at Copper Canyon. In both areas, hypogene metallization occurs within large aureoles of metamoiphism and hydrothennal alteration related to quartz monzonite intrusions of mid-Tertiary age. Supergene processes fitrther altered the rocks and enriched the hypogene protore. At Copper Canyon, hypogene copper and iron sulfides with gold and silver occur in fractures, as partial replacement of favorable beds, and as disseminations in Paleozoic sedimentary rocks. The lower part of the Pennsylvanian Battle formation was a particularly favorable host. Metallization occurs to a lesser extent in quartz monzonite. Metal zoning is well-developed. The deposits at Copper Basin consist principally of supergene copper minerals in arenites of the Cambrian Harmony formation. Oxidation of hypogene copper and iron sulfides in tactite zones has formed at least two commercial deposits; intersections of fractures with favorable beds exerted important ore controls. Recently, the Copper Canyon and Copper Basin properties of Duval Corp. have been added to the list of porphyry copper mines in Nevada, marking the first new copper open pit in this state in 15 years. A study has been made of the effect of unidirectional solidification on the creep behavior, stress-rupture properties, and thermal shock resistance of four nickel-base superalloys. The alloys Mar-MZOO, B-1900, IN 100, and TRW 1900 show improved rupture ductility and thermal shock resistance when tested with the columnar grains parallel to the major stress axis during test. The relative improvement in creep-rupture properties depends on the intrinsic strength of the alloy, a property which depends on composition, heat-treatnient, and crystallographic orientation. The data clarifies some of the factors affecting the properlies of the cast nickel-base superalloy. COMPONENTS designed for high-temperature use have, in recent years, been fabricated by precision casting techniques using nickel-base alloys developed specifically for use in the conventionally cast condition. This development was a result of both the increasing complexity of the component and the recognition that high-temperature strength was incompatible with workability. The use of castings can be economically favorable, but, more important, the recent complex designs of air-cooled gas turbine blades and vanes in alloys which possess the necessary high-temperature strength cannot be forged. Common modes of failure of high-temperature components are excessive creep, creep rupture, and thermal fatigue. If rupture occurs then the mechanism is usually by inter crystalline cracking along those grain boundaries oriented transverse to the major stress axis. In the stronger alloys, rapid propagation of intercrystalline cracks result in apparent premature failure demonstrated by the absence of third stage creep in a creep-rupture test and low rupture ductility. Tensile ductility shows a similar trend, that is, decreasing ductility with increase in strength. It is not surprising, therefore, that increases in creep strength have only been obtained with a loss in resistance to thermal shock, a property which shows a dependence on tensile ductility. VerSnyder and ~uard' showed that the application of unidirectional solidification to a brittle Ni-Cr-A1 alloy both improved the rupture life of the alloy and increased rupture ductility. Since this casting method results in columnar grains, it appeared that the solution to the lack of ductility in nickel-base alloy components was the elimination of the source of failure, namely the transverse grain boundaries. This concept was recently developed2 to produce cast-to-size gas-turbine blades and vanes consisting entirely of columnar grains oriented parallel to the major stress axis of the component. Not only did the process impart increased rupture life and ductility to the components, but it also increased their resistance to thermal shock. During this development, the effect of unidirectional solidification on the properties of several alloys was investigated. The resulting data allows certain conclusions to be drawn regarding the factors affecting the creep and stress-rupture properties of the cast nickel-base superalloy and also its resistance to thermal shock. Detailed information was obtained on the alloys Mar-MZOO, B-1900, In 100, and TRW 1900. The composition of the alloys studied are shown in Table I. MATERIAL PREPARATION AND TESTING The conventionally cast alloys are cast as +-in.-diam bars in innoculated shell molds under conditions designed to maintain control of grain size. Unidirec-tionally solidified casting were produced in the form of 3-in.-diam ingots. Specimens from the latter were machined such that the axes of the columnar grains were parallel with the axis of the test bar, except in certain cases where the transverse properties of the material were being evaluated. The specimens were tested in an axial loading creep machine.' Temperatures were measured with thermocouples, attached just outside each end of the gage length, to assure uniform temperature along the entire specimen. Chromel/alumel thermocouples were used up to 1800"F and Pt/Pt-10 pct Rh thermocouples above 1800"F. The specimen temperature was recorded and maintained within i2"F throughout the test. Creep extensions were measured automatically with extenso-meters attached to ridges on the specimen and recorded continuously using linear variable differential transformers and multipoint recording equipment. MICROSTRUCTURE The microstructures of transverse sections of the four alloys studied are shown in Figs. 1 and 2. Fig. 1 shows optical micrographs of the alloys, both in the conventionally cast and unidirectionally solidified conditions. Each alloy displays a cored dendritic structure, a distribution of MC carbide, and the presence of the y — y' eutectic constituent.~ In the case of IN 100 and B-1900, Fig. 1 indicates that in these specimens the eutectic is degenerate. That is, it consists only of y' pools indicating that the y constituent has been solutioned during the cooling period after solidification. The major effect of unidirectional solidification on the microstructures of the alloys is a tendency to promote a more dendritic form of MC carbide and an increase in dendrite arm spacing, both effects being a result of the slower solidification rate in the unidirectional solidification technique. METALLURGISTS have been studying the chem-ical behavior of sulfur in steelmaking for many years in order to have a better control of the sulfur content of finished steel. During the refining period in the open hearth, molten steel is separated from a gas phase by molten slag. Chemical reactions occur principally at the slag-metal interface and at the slag-gas interface. A need for physical-chemical investigations of reactions between sulfur-bearing gases and steelmaking slags was recognized some time ago.'.' From the early work, it can be qualitatively concluded that increased sulfur content and low partial pressure of oxygen in the gas phase favor the passage of sulfur from gas to slag. Using radioactive sulfur S Koch and Fink' have demonstrated the rapid rate of exchange of sulfur between gas and slag in an open hearth furnace. Gurry and Darken and Darken and Shields (as reported by Derge and Marshall') have equilibrated lime-iron oxide slags with SO—O2 gas mixtures. The major conclusion from the reported results is that sulfur content increases with increasing lime content in lime-iron oxide slags equilibrated with a gas of high oxygen pressure (10-2). The data were interpreted as indicating the presence of SO, and S,O, ions. Richardson and Fincham' have conducted the most extensive experimental study of sulfur equilibria between gas and slag. Their results confirmed many of the conclusions drawn from calculations of Richardson" and Withers. Richardson and Fincham's data fitted very well into the sulfur scheme represented by the reactions 1/2 s2 (g) + (0) melt - 1/202(g)+ (S) melt [II 1/2 S, (g) + 3/2 O (g) + (0) melt - (SO,) melt. [2] At oxygen pressures greater than 10 to 10 they found that reaction Eq. 2 was predominant while reaction Eq. 1 was controlling at oxygen pressures less than 10." to 10.". The slag compositions and gas mixtures used in their investigations were different from those used in the present study. Wherever possible, comparison has been made between their results and these, and agreement is excellent. It is evident that the distribution of sulfur between slag and gas depends upon the oxygen pressure of the gas. In FeO slags, a change in oxygen pressure produces a change in ferric oxide content, and a knowledge of this equilibrium is a prerequisite to studies of sulfur distribution. The data are found in the work of Darken and Gurry" on the FeO system and the more recent experiments of Gurry and Darken" and of Larson and Chipman" on FeO slags containing lime and silica. The effect of oxygen pressure on the ratio Fe /(Fe" + Fe ), the so-called j-ratio, reported by these investigators will be used in interpreting the results which follow. Experimental Method The purpose of the experimental program was to determine the equilibrium sulfur content in slags exposed to gases of known oxygen and sulfur pres- sures. The slag compositions selected for study were from the lime-silica-iron oxide system. Additions of magnesia were made to some of the slags. Apparatus—The apparatus used by Larson and Chipman was modified slightly to accommodate the addition of SO2 to the gas mixtures. As in their work, slag samples of 0.5 to 2.0 g were held at temperature (lcc) in platinum crucibles under a steady stream of gas, 100 to 200 ml per min, for several hours and then rapidly lowered to the bottom of the furnace where they were quenched in mercury. These ores are of two classes, Bessemer and non-Bessemer, existing in separate, though adjoining, beds. Both are carbonates, with small admixtures of oxides and other combinations. To prepare them for market they are roasted in kilns, which have already been described by Mr. John Birkinbine at the Troy Meeting, October, 1883 (Trans., xii., 378). Concerning their size, arrangement, etc., I need, therefore, only repeat that they are 60 feet in height; have wrought-iron shells 24 feet in diameter; are lined with fire-brick, and supported by cast-iron mantel and columns.

The primary duties of the Committee are to secure important papers on iron and steel, to promote their discussion, to organize lively and fruitful meetings, and otherwise to foster the interests of the large number of members of the Institute connected with the iron and steel industry in its many phases. Its success during the past year has been noteworthy. Through its instrumentality many valuable papers were presented at the Cleveland and New York meetings, followed by animated and productive discussions, while the attendance of iron and steel men at both meetings was remarkably large and representative.

The relation between the course, or path, of the fracture of metals and alloys, produced in service or as a result of certain laboratory tests, and the crystalline units of which such materials are composed is of utmost importance. The fracture of normal material is, in general, intracrystalline, i.e., it consists of a break across the grains rather than of a separation between them. An interorystalline fracture indicates either that the metal is of very inferior quality or that the break occurred under very unusual conditions, e.g., at a very high temperature. The usual mechanical tests, when applied to metals of the type that breaks with an intercrystalline fracture, merely measure the coherence of adjacent grains for one another and reveal little as to the real properties of the metal itself. Even such a soft plastic substance as lead, under suitable conditions, may be rendered so weak and brittle that the metal can be easily crumbled into powder by the fingers although the constituent grains have lost none of the intrinsic properties of lead. Various erroneous explanations of this behavior of lead have appeared in the scientific literature, the change being described usually as an allotropic one. The importance, in an industrial sense, of a proper explanation of this type of the corrosion of lead justifies the description of the type of metal deterioration that follows. Corroded Lead Sheathing In Figs. 1 and 2 are shown two typical specimens of corroded lead sheathing selected from materials submitted to the Bureau of Standards for examination. Fig; 1 shows a section of the sheathing of an aerial cable; Fig. 2, that of the lead covering of a subterranean feeder-line of an electric light system. In this case the deterioration had proceeded to a much great'er extent than in the case shown in Fig. 1 so that certain portions of the metal could easily be crumbled into a coarse gray powder by the fingers. THE application of hydrocarbon equilibrium data to various problems encountered in refining and in natural gasoline recovery is an old and well established practice. Both generalized data and data on specific hydro-carbon systems have been made available by a number of investigators. More recently such data have been applied to the relations governing the separation of oil and gas both in the reservoir and at the surface. Most of the applications to production problems, however, have been based upon examinations of surface samples of oil and gas. This paper describes a technique that has been used satisfactorily in a number of cases to calculate directly from the hydrocarbon analysis of and auxiliary laboratory data on a subsurface sample of the reservoir fluid the behavior of the oil and gas during the various stages of separation at the surface incident to production.

Solution mining of magnesium salts (Carnallite and Bischofite) is taking place near Veendam, in the northeast Netherlands. The magnesium salts are used for the production of magnesia sinter, used as a base material for the manufacture of refractory bricks for furnaces. This paper gives, first, an introduction to the operational procedure followed in Veendam, with the emphasis on some of the unique aspects, and then discusses rock-mechanical aspects of the cavity behaviour. The creep behaviour of magnesium salts is described, and Finite Element calculations on cavity stability and potential surface subsidence are discussed.

Activities, free energies, and heats and entropies of mixing of liquid Pb-Zn alloys have been obtained by the electrode-potential method between 400° and 650°C. The large positive deviations observed from Raoult's law are in agreement with the phase diagram, which indicates a wide immiscibility field. A vapor-pressure method was used to extend the activity measurements to 900°C, allowing the maximum of the immiscibility gap to be estimated by thermodynamic calculation. Data on the mono-tectic and eutectic points compare favorably with previously existing work. SEVERAL long-standing methods have been in use for the study of phase diagrams from measurement of the activities of the component metals.' The use of thermodynamic analysis for interpreting equilibria data is comparatively recent, however. Such analysis is usually undertaken by first evaluating the principal thermodynamic functions as, for example, the enthalpy, entropy, and free energy of the alloy constituents. These, in turn, quite often can be correlated with the interatomic potential energies and atomistics of the system, from which a clearer understanding of the causes leading to deviations from ideal behavior is gained. The present study of liquid Pb-Zn alloys is concerned with a determination of these quantities by electrode-potential and vapor-pressure measurements, using these values in calculations involving phase equilibria and to obtain a theoretical insight into an alloy system exhibiting strong positive deviations from ideal metallic solution. A considerable portion of the previously reported work is based on thermal analysis. Supplemented by optical studies of solid alloys, these techniques have revealed the essential nature of the immiscible mixtures that are formed. It is difficult, however, using the phase-

Instability of rock slopes may occur by failure along pre- existing structural discontinuities, by failure through intact material or by failure along a surface formed partly along discontinuities and partly through intact material. Although certain fundamental failure modes are recognized, the mechanisms of slope failure are varied and complex. Such mechanisms are governed by the engineering geology conditions of the rock mass, which are almost always unique to a particular site. An understanding of failure mechanisms requires a knowledge of the physical, mechanical and strength properties of the intact material and discontinuities which make up the rock mass, as well as the structural geology and hydrogeology. These engineering geology parameters also must be evaluated with respect to the slope geometry to determine failures which are kinematically possible. Only after obtaining a reasonable appreciation of the possible failure modes can a rational mechanical stability analysis be carried out. Both two-dimensional and three-dimensional failure mechanisms should be considered in assessing the design of rock slopes. Simple analyses methods are used initially to identify those possible failures which could control slope stability. More complex and detailed analyses usually are required for a few critical failure modes which could control stability, or where a more complex type of failure mechanism is envisaged. Complex failure mechanisms are usually identified when assessing previous slope failures. More detailed information concerning slope geometry and engineering geology parameters must be acquired where analyses must be more rigorous.

INTRODUCTION India like USA has traditionally relied on bord and pillars as dominant underground method. Coal has generally been mined at shallow depth from relatively thick and horizontally bedded coal seams. These' factors contributed towards large scale adoption of bard and pillar. After nationalisation of coal industry in two stages in 1971 and 1973, large scale mechanisation and modernisation programmes were undertaken. Longwall mining was identified as one of the major that area for increasing underground coal production. The idea to introduce longwall mining was mooted to increase productivity and to promote conservation and safety. The nationalised coal industry has already worked about twenty longwall faces with different types of support. The tempo of introducing longwall is catching up and a number of longwall programmes with, Self advancing supports of different types and Capacity are in active stage of implementation. The country has not yet started producing mechanised Supports and therefore supports and machineries are being imported from U.K. and other countries of the continent. The of the major problem faced in the longwall projects is to choose suitable type and capacity of supports. The suppliers and manufacturers of these supports are not competent enough to choose and offer the right type and capacity of supports as their knowledge and information about Indian strata conditions are extremely limited. The Central Wining Research Station (Q.!RS), has undertaken a research programme for evaluating the rock mechanical conditions obtaining in the proposed longwall locales and has worked out a method for selection of proper type and capacity of supports on the basis of projected strata behaviour at the proposed locale. STRATA CCNTROL FAILURES Indian coal industry had made some attempts to introduce longwall caving in the early fifties after a working group set up by the Government of India had recommended its adoption to increase productivity and to modernise mines. Approximately 20 longwall faces were tried in the major Indian coalfields of Jharia, Ranigunj and Karanpurr between 1951 and 1968. The supports used consisted of 20T hydraulic props or 35140~ friction props. A number of these faces had suffered total strata control failures and a large number of support elements were lost. The Central Mining Research Station initiated a research programme to analyse these failures in the general background of behaviour of Indian coal measure strata at longwall faces. All the available data regarding the cases of failures were collected and physico-mechanical properties of overlying roof rocks were determined in the laboratory. Simultaneously, observations were continued to establish the behviour pattern of Indian coal measure strata at longwall faces. These studies were helpful in analysing the occurrences of collapse. BEHAVIOUR OF INDIAN COAL MEASURE STRATA The coal measure strata encountered in the principal Indian coalfields of Jharia, Ranigunj and Karanpura are in general strong in nature however, the immediate roof (mostly up to 1.5 to 2 m) in most of the cases is weak and false bedded shale. Rigorous equations for calculating subsurface pres.tures in flowing and static gas wells, and pressures along horizontal pipelines are presented in this paper. These general equations, based on the mechanical encrgy balance, contain no assumptions regarding temperature and can be used with either straight-line or curved temperature gradients. The friction factors recommended in this report are based on an absolute roughness of 0.0006 in. Flow is always considered to he turbulent. Although these general flow equations are solved by numerical means, the methods are as convenient as many of those used today to calculate pressures in gas wells and pipelines. These numerical methods are illustrated for flowing and static columns of gas in wells and for flow in pipelines. The authors believe that the use of these methods will result in more accurately calculated pressures in gas wells and pipelines and that [he methods are more flexible than any in use at the present time. Also, the methods are easily adaptable to automatic computers. INTRODUCTION The problem of calculating subsurface pressures in gas wells and along flowing pipelines has been studied by many investigators with the results that two widely-used methods have been presented in technical literature. One approximates conditions in a gas well or pipeline by assuming that temperature and compressi- bility are constants tor the entire gas column. The other method assumes that temperature is constant at some average value but permits compressibility to vary with pressure at the constant temperature. While these approximations may be justified for relatively shallow and low-pressure wells, they become more and more unrealistic as the calculations are applied to the deeper high-pressure wells. In wells or pipelines where there is an appreciable change in temperature between the inlet and outlet ends of the flow string, it is equally as important to consider the change in compressibility with temperature as it is to consider the change with pressure. Consequently, the methods presented in this paper were developed to provide a workable procedure for calculating pressures in gas wells and pipelines which makes no assumptions regarding either temperature or compressibility. The friction factors recommended for use with the equations were the result of study of published literature and extensive experimental work with gas wells. The F,. values in Appendix IV which contain the friction factor are equivalent to an absolute roughness of 0.0006 in. as calculated by the Nikuradse equation. The absolute roughness of 0.0006 in. was previously published by Cullender and Binckley2 for gas wells; it is in agreement with 0.00065 in. of Smith, Dewees, and Williams1 for gas wells and 0.00065 in. of Baker and Swerdloff4 for pipelines; it is in reasonable agreement with 0.0007 in. reported by the Bureau of Mines and the American Gas Assn.5 for large transmission lines. However, any type of friction factors may be used in the equations by a change in the F, values in Appendix [V].

The reports for the years 1942 and 1943 were written in 1943 and 1944, respectively, and were summarized at the meetings of the Institute in February of those two years, but the manuscripts were held until released for publication in 1945. 1942 Lack of transportation facilities during 1942 resulted in a sharp curtailment of producing operations in Colombia at the middle of the year, and production of crude for export was thus greatly affected. Total production in 1942 amounted to only 10,617,008 bbl. Of this amount the Tropical Oil Co. produced 9,453,995 bbl., which includes 126,607 bbl. of petroleum condensate, and the Colombian Petroleum Co. produced 1,163,013 bbl, from its Barco property. The following summary, showing a comparison of the number of barrels of crude produced during the years 1941 . and 1942, reflects the extent to which producing operations were reduced during 1942: These above figures do not include any production recovered from Condor's (Shell's) Casabe wells during testing operations. An active exploratory drilling Program was carried out by several of the major companies, and the year 1942 established a record for wildcatting activity in Colombia. Excluding development operations on the Shell's Casabe wells on the Yondo concession, 13 wildcats were completed. Eight of these were in the Magdalena Valley, and all were abandoned; five were on the Barco Concession, and of these four were completed as producers. Particularly notable among the petroleum developments during 1942 was the continued success of drilling operations on the Shell's Yondo Concession of Compania Colombiana de Petroleos El Condor opposite Barranca-Bermeja. In 1941 the discovery well, Casabe No. I, was drilled and completed with an estimated initial production of approximately 480 bbl. of 19 1/2 A.P.I. gr. oil per day. In 1942, seven stepouts from the discovery well were successfully completed with initial production ratings ranging from 150 to 1230 bbl. per day. An extensive wildcat program on the Barco Concession of the Colombian Petroleum Co. yielded favorable results with the completion of four producers in the Socuavo and Tres Bocas areas; a fifth test, Sardinata Norte No. I, was abandoned at 500;" feet.
