THE purpose of this paper is to discuss the relative merits of the large 31/8 in. machine and the small 21/4-in. tappett machine in driving development-headings ; and although the . data here presented were obtained from cross-cut headings alone, experience has shown that the results are equally true in drifting, raising and winning. Recently we drove two parallel cross-cuts through the same formation, using a 3k-in. machine at the breast of one cross-cut., and a 2k-in. machine of the same make at the breast of the other. The results of this work afforded an ideal comparison, since in both cases the headings were advanced through rock practically of the same hardness and breaking-properties ; the amount of sludging was equal, and there was no difference in the condition of the steel or the machines, in the air-pressure or in the experience of the operating-crews. Some operators in the Cripple Creek district contend that there is ground which cannot be handled with the small machine, the holes being too small to contain enough powder to pull the ground, etc. The results obtained in working the property of the Portland Gold Mining Co., however, show that the ground worked by them does not fall in this class. During a period of two years there have been driven, with the small machine, 4 miles and 308 ft. of development-headings, through a diversity of ground, including Pike's Peak granite (a coarsely porphyritic type of granite), highly indurated, andesitic or phonolytic breccia, true massive andesite, trachytic phonolyte, tuffas, and along dikes of decomposed basalt and hard phonolyte; in every instance a satisfactory record was made. The headings here described were driven through highly indurated, andesitic breccia, having a hardness of from 5.2 to 7.2

SOME observations relative to the U-Zn system have been made by other investigators. Chipman1 and Carter2 have reported the preparation of several U-Zn alloys and point out that these alloys are generally difficult to prepare. Chipman1 reported evidence for a high melting compound at about 90 atomic pct Zn and the possible existence of a eutec-tic between the compound and uranium. Raynor," in a theoretical discussion of the alloying properties of uranium, included zinc among the elements predicted to have little or no solubility in a, p, or y uranium. In the present investigation, thermal analyses, X-ray, metallographic, and vapor-pressure data were obtained to determine the phase boundaries. The relatively high zinc pressure over most of the alloys at temperatures of 900 °C and above proved troublesome and special techniques had to be employed in preparing suitable alloys. Materials and Preparation of Alloys The metals employed in this investigation were Ames Laboratory biscuit uranium containing less than 500 ppm total impurities and Bunker Hill slab zinc or Baker Analyzed reagent granulated zinc, both with a purity of 99.99+ pct. Due to the high vapor pressure of zinc and the high reactivity of both uranium and zinc with oxygen at only moderately high temperatures, alloys were prepared in closed containers which had either been evacuated or evacuated and filled with helium. High purity magnesia, magnesia containing 10 pct calcium fluoride, and tantalum proved to be suitable crucible materials. Tw-o different procedures, described below, were used to prepare alloys, the latter being the most satisfactory. The metals, uranium turnings and granulated zinc, were cleaned with dilute nitric acid, rinsed, dried, and placed immediately in a helium-fill'ed dry box. The two metals were placed' in a 10 mil Ta crucible. The charge was enclosed in the tantalum crucible by welding on a preformed tantalum cap. This assembly was enclosed inside a stainless steel (AISI 309) bomb. The bomb was made by welding a piece of stainless steel plate on each end of a stainless steel pipe. All these operations were carried out in a helium atmosphere. These assemblies were heated in a muffle furnace at temperatures between 1100" and 1200°C for 10 to 15 min or held as long as 15 to 20 hr in the 950" to 1000°C temperature range before quenching. Spectrographic and chemical analyses showed no tantalum pickup by the alloys, indicating no reaction between the alloys and the crucibles. However, some of these crucibles failed, probably due to imperfections in the welds of the stainless steel or tantalum crucibles. The second and most satisfactory method was to prepare the alloys by powder metallurgy techniques. The procedure was to press degreased and acid-etched uranium turnings with granulated zinc into 20 g compacts under 20,000-psi pressure. The compacts were placed in MgO crucibles, and sealed in evacuated Vycor or fused silica tubes. The alloys were then heated as long as two weeks at about 550°C in a muffle furnace. The pressed compacts were observed to expand by several volume percent during heating and it was necessary to make allowances for this expansion in order to avoid breaking the crucible and Vycor tube. This method was found very satisfactory for preparing alloys which were suitable for thermal analysis or vapor pressure studies. Experimental Methods and Results The phase diagram for the U-Zn system at 1 atrn pressure, shown in Fig. 1, is based primarily on vapor pressure measurements and on thermal analysis taken at temperatures below 950°C. Fig. 2 shows the U-Zn diagram at 5 atrn pressure, constructed on the basis of thermal analysis of alloys in sealed containers up to 1150°C and on the basis of metallographic, X-ray, and analytical data. The alloys sealed under vacuum were actually under their own vapor pressure and those sealed in an atmosphere of helium were under an additional pressure due to the helium. At temperatures up to 1100°C the zinc pressure is 5 atrn or less for these alloys; consequently the maximum pressure over the alloys sealed under a helium atmosphere was 10 atrn or less at temperatures up to 1100°C. Changes in pressure of this order of magnitude do not appreciably alter the position of most solid-solid or liquid-solid phase boundaries. In constructing the phase diagram for a pressure of 5 atm, the effect of pressure on all phase boundaries except those for liquid-vapor or solid-vapor regions was considered negligible.

Discussion of the paper of DOUGLAS BUNTING, presented at the New York meeting, February, 1915, and printed in Bulletin No. 97, January, 1915, pp. 1 to 21. ARTHUR HOVEY STORRS, Scranton, Pa.-I know something about accidents Nos. 4 and 8. At the Fuller mine there was no disturbance of the surface in connection with either of those accidents, there was no surface settling, nor signs of sand in the mine, and seemingly the water all came from a subterranean basin or water-bearing stratum overlying the Six Foot vein. A similar thing was shown, in an accident not referred to in Mr. Bunting's table, at the Avondale, where we had an inflow of water, as high as 12,000 gal. a minute, for a considerable period. Regarding the second accident (No. 8) at the Fuller mine: after the first inflow of water (No. 4 of the table), the mining was abandoned in the Six Foot vein. A long slope was. driven in an underlying seam, and when this had reached a point about 2,000 ft. southeast of the place where the first inflow of water occurred, and where the bore holes show there was apparently sufficient rock covering for the Six Foot vein, a rock plane was driven up to the upper vein (Six Foot) and one afternoon this exposed the coal. During the following night the inflow of the water occurred. There were absolutely no workings at this point so that no disturbance of the overlying rocks could have occurred. The result of the inflow of water was to fill up the entire lower-vein workings in about two or three clays and caused the abandonment of the mine. After several years, considerable time and money were spent in an effort to hoist the water from the shaft and mine workings, with varying, but in the main rather indifferent, success until, clue to the breaking of one hoisting rope, the engineer pulled the other hoisting tank up through the tower and down on to the engine, making a complete wreck of the whole plant. It was then decided to allow the mine to soak and it is still doing so, other portions of the property being mined from adjoining collieries.

What is entailed here is the extension of the sinzplified material balance formulas to encompass interference between oil fields. As previously reported, the ex-plicitness as so revealed for the cunzulative pressure drop as a function of all factors contributing to its change in the material balance equation, is now transcribed through the inter-conzmunicating aquifer to effect an increased pressure drop on an adjoining field by interference. Such is performed by mathematical analyses and the application of the Laplace transformations. What is accomplished is that the reiteration problems previously associated with interference studies are nullified, since volumetric changes for the fluids in situ are automatically adjusted by the explicitness so expressed, and what pertains to the superposition principle applies only to the impeded water drive upon a su.bject field, which is likewise incorporated in the over-all pressure drop that results. The mathematics treats with the rigorous solution of the problem, as well as with methods easily amenable to numerical interpretation by the practicing engineer. In all cases, however, what is deduced for areal extents, reveal interference between wells when time becomes large that further substantiate the analyses. Probably of equal significance, all variables and for/nation characteristics are accounted for. This applies to the differences in PVT analyses that occur from field to field and the physical parameters associated with the lithology of the reservoirs. The latter is deduced from a rigorous interpretation of the unsteady-state flow problem for sands of different permeabilities in series. Thus, what purports to be a trial-and-error calculation to include variations in sand conditions within the intercommunicating aquifer to define water drive has little importance compared to the designation of such paranzeters at the reservoir to constitute the essential criteria. INTRODUCTION In a recent publication, the reader has been introduced to the simplified material balance formulas,' It has been shown that the complexities formerly associated for identifying and determining reservoir pressure in the material balance relationship can be resolved by treating with the Laplace transformations, the inversion of which reveals pressure as an explicit function of all factors contributing to its change. For an under saturated oil reservoir, this constitutes an integrated effect from the inception of production; and for a saturated oil reservoir, such represents a survey traverse. However, what is most important, for the first time we are able to express the pressure change in a reservoir directly to the oil, gas and water produced, and to the physical parameters of the formation, in the same manner that reservoir pressure has served in the past to define well interference — which opens up this avenue of endeavor for investigating interference between oil fields. The occurrence of interference is by virtue of the juxtaposition of two or more oil reservoirs producing in the same aquifer. Thus, in any one field, the extended production so incurred creates a pressure lowering in the field, as well as in the aquifer, which can now be transcribed by these simplified material balance formulas to the adjoining reservoir to observe the increased pressure change so induced. These effects are retroactive from field to field, to reveal a pressure drop far in excess of normal depletion to evidence the interference pattern that can result. Such is the purpose for the present undertaking — to develop the mathematical physics treating with this phenomenon of interference between oil fields, employing the simplified material balance formulas. Since Ref. 1 often will be referred to in the text, it is identified as "The Simplification", in the same connotation that another paper has been referred to as the "Laplace Trans-formation. However, the amount of material to be covered in these passages is substantial; therefore, the total emphasis will be placed upon developing these fundamental ideas treating with interference rather than attempting to offer work curves, which always can be prepared. For the practical application of these simplified material balance formulas that form the framework of the present development, the reader will find a comprehensive treatment in the Appendix of Ref. 1, illustrating a factual field example. In essence, what is proposed by this presentation is to make available to the practicing engineer a simplified means to treat with interference between oil fields, independent of the complex machine computations that have attended such undertakings in the past. As the problem unfolds, a common pattern will be discernible, whereby the many reiteration processes that previously required computing devices are eliminated.

The use of bromine as an oxidizing agent, particularly for sul phur, has become very general in analysis, replacing the stronger oxidizing acids. The object of this paper is to describe briefly the experience which we have gained with this reagent in the laboratory of Lafayette College in the oxidation of metallic sulphides. Most of the simple sulphides, as blende, pyrite, etc., when exposed to the combined action of an alkaline hydrate and bromine, and finally to hydrochloric acid, are completely and promptly dissolved. The procedure is as follows: The very finely pulverized mineral is first treated, in a beaker, with a solution of sodium hydrate of a spe cific gravity of 1.25, and heated ; bromine is then cautiously added to supersaturation, and finally hydrochloric acid to acid reaction. If any of the sulphide is not taken up, the same operation may be re peated. It is necessary, however, that the mineral be very finely pulverized. Instead of using the pure bromine, a saturated solu tion of bromine in potassium bromide may be used with equally good effect. The process is advantageously simplified by making a saturated solution of bromine in the concentrated alkali. This is done by pouring bromine into a solution of sodium hydrate, of the above given specific gravity, until no more is taken up, and then adding a little of the sodium hydrate solution until the liquid does not give off free bromine. The procedure with this solution is as follows: The pulverized mineral is moistened with, say, 10 cc. of the solution, and heated, then hydrochloric acid added to just acid reaction. Two more additions of the alkaline solution, in amounts of 20 cc. each, are added at intervals of about ten minutes, each addition being followed by hydrochloric acid. The total amount of the alkaline solution (containing the bromine) used is, therefore, 50 cc., and the amount of hydrochloric acid should not exceed that necessary to make the solu tion acid after each addition of the alkali. The mixture should be kept hot. After the final addition of acid, the contents of the beaker is taken to dryness and heated in an air-bath to 110° to 115°C., to render silica insoluble. The authors present an interesting review of various applications of rather well known theories. Their rearrangement of the original working equations is strictly computer oriented and serves well to that effect; however, the new appearance will be confusing to the slide rule-wielding members of the profession. In reviewing discrepancies existing between calculations made by Baker Oil Tools, Inc. field engineering staff members and computer output submitted based on the authors' program, the following error in concept was discovered in Eq. 4. The authors quote the length change due to helical buckling in the following form We appreciate Kurt Leutwyler's awareness of Archimedes' principle, and concur that the final term in the denominator of Eq. 4 results in a small error. Examples checked revealed less than I ft error, and corrective expressions for the four possibilities of displacement follow. The portion of the denominator within extra large brackets represents the original term W,, = weight of outside fluid displaced per unit length. The authors interpreted the expression "displaced" in general oilfield terminology as a fluid displacement, such as "mud displaced with water, etc." A review of the theory forming the basis for these helical buckling calculations discloses that this displacement is meant to be interpreted in the Archimedean sense, i.e., fluid displaced by the solid body. here the tubing and the seal nipple. Lubinski* illustrated the point by summing moments due to mechanical and hydraulic forces acting on a free body immersed in fluid. This moment summation, always in the Archi,medean sense, yields effects of the real forces, including W,, and the fictitious force on the bending mechanism. I would be interested to hear the authors' comments regarding this theoretical point, which nevertheless is not mute since its lack of recognition seems to result in erroneous calculations. We must not remain mute to Leutwyler's suggestion that these equations, although computer oriented, are confusing to the slide rule engineers. Such input information as density in pounds per gallon, pipe diameters in inches, pumping rate in barrels per minute and pipe length in feet is not confusing to most of us. Yet there may be some rugged individuals in field positions who carry tables of conversion constants and have committed to memory such items as coefficients of thermal expansion and Poisson's ratio; however, even this type of individual would welcome a simplified equation occasionally. A STUDY of copper and silver base alloys was made with the object of finding, if possible, useful alloys subject to dispersion hardening. These studies led to the discovery of several alloys showing considerable dispersion hardening, the most important of which, the alloys of copper with iron, nickel, cobalt and chromium silicides, have since been very ably reported by M. G. Corson.1 This paper is offered as a few notes covering alloys other than those described by Corson and some further data on the silicide alloys.

This second progress report of grinding presents comments regarding ball consumption and data pertaining to the hydroscillator, which is closed circuited with the tricone mill. A study and postulate of how balls function is presented. The paper summarizes cost reduction obtained by the method of "grinding for the tail race" rather than for "mesh tons." AT the Regional meeting in Columbus, Ohio, in September 1949, the authors presented a progress report of the first year's operation with a Hardinge tricone mill in closed circuit with a Dorr hydroscillator. The present report covers our findings on this grinding circuit to January, 1950. In order to clarify our position, the authors wish to state that no invention or discovery is claimed. The Tennessee grinding circuit is simply an engineered arrangement of known equipment arranged to incorporate all of the recognized efficiency factors of comminution as they are known today. As we concluded our first report, it was not clear how effective the Tennessee mode of operation would be on harder ores. The only information we had at that time was that the Bond grindability test at 48-mesh gave 6.04 g of undersize per revolution. A later test on the same sample at 100-mesh reduced this to 2.04 g, which is definitely in the harder ore class, and which makes the reported 8.80 kw-hr per ton of —200-mesh produced a very creditable figure. Hydroscillator Operation The machine as now developed has proved dependable and easy to operate. It starts easily under full load and responds quickly to operating adjustments. The hydraulic holes in the oscillating plate do not plug when shut down under full load. Absolutely clean hydraulic water is essential. An Elliott water screen or similar device should be an essential part of the machine to keep all scale and trash of all kinds from the hydraulic compartment. The shift operators have expressed approval of the machine. In table I we show a typical screen analysis of the hydroscillator rake sand as compared to conventional classifier rake sand on our ore. We have previously reported that of the 28.7 pct reduction in power, the hydroscillator contributed 6 pct, on a —200-mesh basis. This is a conservative figure. Some of our test runs indicated that the saving was as high as 10 pct. Laboratory studies by the Dorr Co. engineers indicate that still greater efficiency is possible. Nevertheless, the 10-ft plate is overflowing 2100 tons per day at 3 to 4 pct + 65-mesh, which is a very creditable performance by
