THE standard scale of temperature that it is attempted to realize in practice is the centigrade thermodynamic scale, as defined by Kelvin about the middle of the last century. This scale would be exactly realized with a perfect1 gas in an ideal gas thermometer, and is closely realized with the more permanent gases. From the departure of certain properties of these gases from those of a perfect gas, it is possible to deduce the amount of the departure of the temperature scales, defined by their use, from the thermodynamic scale. In nearly all the precise experimental work done during the latter part of the last century, it was necessary for the experimenter to establish his own gas-thermometer scale, and the labor involved in this was often greater than that involved in the prime object of the experimental work undertaken. The experimental difficulties involved in gas thermometry led to the establishment of temperature scales differing from one another by amounts considerably greater than could be accounted for by the differences in the properties of the gases used. Results were, therefore, expressed in terms of somewhat different temperature scales, snaking correlation of such results difficult and uncertain.

Carlisle: Jim Knapp, has been the good friend of hundreds-maybe thousands-of mining men in these western states in the last 40 or 50 years. Jim is going to talk about many of the mining camps of Nevada, where he has done plenty in the mining field during the last 50 years. Jim, for a starter, how did you happen to go to Nevada? Knapp: In the summer of 1902, two years after the discovery at Tonopah, the professor of mining at Stanford sent out myself and another student by the name of Joe Miller to make a report on the camp. We left San Francisco at 8 p.m., got to Reno the next morning, then took the train to Sodaville, arriving about 4:30 in the afternoon. The first man I met when I arrived at the Tonopah station was Tasker Oddie, a gentleman who later became the Govenor of the State and then a United States Senator. Before we got away from the stage station I also met S. H. Brady, the first mining engineer to put out his shingle in Tonopah. He afterwards became general manager of the West End Mining Co.

Analytical and experimental procedures are descrihed for quantitative determination of volume-fraction microporosity in metals by mimorarlio-graphg. The analysis assumes spherical pores but allows for the observed fact that pores or portions of pores smaller than a given thickness do not project an image on the film. Volume-fraction microporosity was measuured in cast low-alloy steel and shown to vary from 0.6 x 10-4 to 10 x 10 depending on mode of solidification and on whether the material was air- or vacuum-cast. The aim of work described herein was to develop a method of quantitative measurement of the volume fraction of microporosity in cast metals. Microporosity, present in nearly all castings and ingots, is always interdendritic in nature and may be large enough to be seen on a polished surface with the naked eye. More generally, it is smaller in size, and its detection more difficult. Three techniques might be considered for measurement of microporosity: 1) lineal analysis of a polished metallographic surface, 2) density measurement, or 3) quantitative microradiography. As will be shown later, volume fractions of porosity in directionally solidified castings may be the order of 10-4 to 10-3; such small amounts of porosity are difficult to identify and measure on a polished surface. Density measurement is also not a suitable technique (for alloys) when the volume fraction of porosity is low. This is because the density of the base metal is often not known within the necessary accuracy, due to microsegregation or partial phase transformations. In general, it is not possible to completely eliminate microsegregation without also altering the porosity. Because of the limitations of the foregoing techniques, quantitative microradiography was employed to determine amount of porosity. In recent work, microradiography has been found to be useful for qualitative measurement of porosity, including determination of size and shape of individual pores;&apos;)&apos; however, quantitative determination of amount of porosity has not been attempted. I) CALCULATION OF VOLUME-FRACTION POROSITY The following analysis employs procedures similar to those of Cahn and Nutting3 and Hilliard.4 Major simplifications are that pores are assumed to be spherical and to be present in sufficiently small quantities that no overlapping occurs. A basic difference from the previous treatments is that the limited "sensitivity" of microradiography is considered. Assume first 1) cavities are spherical and of uniform diameter, 2) cavities are randomly distributed, 3) volume-fraction porosity and specimen thickness to pore radius ratio are sufficiently small that overlapping of the projected images of cavities is negligible, 4) sensitivity is limited (i.e., holes or portions of holes of less than a given thickness do not project an image on the film). The sensitivity, is defined as: where 5 = minimum thickness of void from which an image will be projected on the film and t = specimen thickness. Now, from Fig. 1, it is possible to distinguish between two different types of holes. These are 1) holes whose centers lie within the region t/2 > X > 6/2, where X is distance from one surface of the specimen (positive into the specimen), and 2) holes whose centers lie within the region (6 — r) < X < 6/2, Holes whose centers lie outside X = (6 -r) project no image on the film. These two types of pores are considered separately below. Type 1 Pores. When 6 is greater than 0, the image of a spherical cavity of radius r appears on the film as a circle of radius a which is smaller than r. The elite group of companies below represent the mining sector of Fortune magazine&apos;s June Directory listing the 500 U.S. industries that chalked up the largest dollar sales volume in 1966. The companies are listed according to their 1966 sales rank, which is given along with their 1965 rank for comparative purposes. All of the firms except two-Freeport Sulphur and Texas Gulf Sulphur-were in the Fortune Directory last year, and both these exceptions have been counted among the top 500 in former years. The one mining name that is missing from last year&apos;s list-Consolidation Coal-has actually jumped from number 217 to 4 by virtue of its merger with Continental Oil. As can be seen from the Industry Medians, the mining industry as a whole boosted its sales 17.8%, in 1966, making it the seventh largest gainer among the 22 industrial classifications covered in the Directory. By comparison, 1965 mining sales increased 10.2%, a gain which was surpassed by 13 other industries. In two other comparative tables, mining leads the field, topping the entire list in return on sales and in assets per employee.

GEOGRAPHICALLY, North Carolina consists of three divisions, the coastal plain on the east, the piedmont plateau in the center, and the Appalachian mountain region on the west. Geologically, the State may be divided into two main divisions, an eastern or coastal plain region, and a western or piedmont plateau and mountain region. The eastern region is underlain with unconsolidated sands, clays, marls, and shell limestones varying in age from Cretaceous to Recent. The western region is, in general, underlain with gneisses, schists, slates, sheared volcanics, and igneous intrusives of Pre-Cambrian age. In the mountain and upper piedmont portion of the western region are several areas of irregularly metamorphosed sediments of early Paleozoic age. Throughout the piedmont plateau and a part of the mountain portion of the western region, important areas are underlain with igneous intrusives of late Carboniferous age. TO phase of the Ti-0 system has the structure of NaCl and has a wide range of solid solubility.&apos; In the course of studying the Ti-Cr-0 ternary system, binary alloys were made of iodide titanium and high purity TiO,. It was found from X-ray studies of the binary alloys that a transformation of the TiO appears to take place at a temperature near 925°C. Evidence of this phase change is best seen in Fig. 1. Fig. 1A shows the X-ray spectrometer pattern (CUKa radiation) of an alloy of 25 wt pct 0 corresponding to the stoichiometric composition of TiO.

(communication to the Secretary): I have read with much pleasure the interesting and valuable paper by Mr. Kunz, and hope that the following brief notes, gathered a few years ago, while a resident in Mexico City, may help to elucidate the subjcct: Turquoise.—This was known to the Aztecs as Xihuitl. Santiago Ramirez states that they found it in the Cerro Xicohtzonc, close to Atzcapatzalco, a suburb of the City of Mexico (compare page 59). Opal.—This was known to the ancient Mexicans, for they named it mezcuitlatt (compare page 63). Jade.—Under this was iucluded a third mineral, prehnite, not mentioned by Mr. Kunz. According to James D. Dana, part of the "jade " of China is prehnite; and Humboldt informs us, in his work on New Spain, that the same species of jade is known in some parts of Mexico as mahagua (majagua ?). The same writer says, in his Views of the Cordilleras, that the Aztec name Tecpatl included flint, hornstone, and green jade; and finally, in his Travels in South America," he discusses the nature of the ancient amazon-stones, and declares them to have been made out of a jade resembling " compact feldspar," one of the constituents of the gabbro verde di Corsica. IIence those stones were probably composed of nephrite. According to Humboldt, the form given to them most frequently is that of the Babylomian cylinder, longitudinally perforated, and loaded with inscriptions and figures. They were also cut by the natives into very thin plates, perforated at the center, suspended by a thread, and worn as amulets. The concept of a critical super saturation, below which the nucleation rate is essentially zero and above which it is essentially infinite, is discussed with reference to vapor-solid nucleation. The necessary and sufficient conditions deduced for observations of this type of behavior are: 1) the nucleation rate must exhibit a sharp dependence on super saturation, 2) the growth rate must be sufficiently large that nuclei become observable in the time period of the experiment, and 3) the number of highly preferred nucleation sites must be small. Experiments reveal that the nucleation of silver on sodium chloride is visually detectable at all experimentally accessible super saturations and does not exhibit critical nucleation behavior. Failure to observe a critical super saturation is attributed to the insensitivity of nucleation rate to supersaturation as a consequence of the particular values of the contact angle and the surface free energy for this system. THE concept of a critical supersaturation, below which the nucleation rate is essentially zero and above which it is essentially infinite, arises naturally in homogeneous nucleation theory. Experimentally this type of behavior has been found by Volmer1 and others for water and other low surface tension liquids, as reviewed by several authors.2&apos;3 The same type of behavior has been predicted and observed for heterogeneous nucleation of solids by Yang et al.4 and others,596 as also recently reviewed.2,7,8 In the work reported here on the heterogeneous nucleation of silver on NaC1, however, no critical super-saturation was found. Similar observations have been made recently for other systems.9-11 These results led to a reexamination of nucleation theory which revealed that there are conditions for which critical behavior is not predicted, either for homogeneous or heterogeneous nucleation. Although heterogeneous nucleation is of primary importance in this paper, some insight into critical behavior for such a case can be gained by considering homogeneous nucleation. Accordingly both types of nucleation theory are reviewed briefly. The requisite conditions for critical supersaturation behavior are then considered. The experimental results for the nucleation of silver on NaCl are presented and interpreted in terms of the theoretical presentation. REVIEW OF NUCLEATION THEORY There are essentially two approaches to nucleation theory, the so-called classical theory involving the concepts of bulk thermodynamics, and the statistical mechanical theory in which nuclei are regarded as macromolecules. The classical theory is based on the work of Volmer and Weber12,13 and Becker and. Doring14 and has been extended by Pound et al.15 The crucial assumption in the classical theory is that the small clusters or nuclei can be characterized by the same thermodynamic properties as those of the stable bulk phase. Thus, the nuclei are assumed to have a surface free energy, y, and a volume free energy of formation (relative to the vapor phase), ,, identical to that of the bulk. For deposition under low super-saturation conditions, the nuclei are large and this assumption is satisfactory. However, in many cases of interest, the nuclei contain only a few atoms and this assumption is highly questionable. The statistical mechanical models originated, for the specific case of a dimer as the critical nucleus, with the work of Frenkel16 and were extended later to larger sizes by Walton,17,18 Hirth19 and, more recently, Ht Zinsmeister. These models describe the nucleus in terms of a partition function, the estimation of which is tractable for clusters of 2 to 10 atoms, but extremely difficult for clusters larger than 10 atoms. Although the classical and statistical mechanical models are expected to apply for the limiting cases of large and small nuclei, both are uncertain for intermediate sizes. In this paper we shall treat only the classical model, recognizing that it is exact only for large nucleus sizes and regarding it as a phenom-enological description for small nucleus sizes. When analyses of experimental data using bulk properties show the nucleus size to be small, the resulting parameters should be regarded as largely empirical parameters describing the relative nucleation potency of the system. Considerable justification for the continued use of classical theory is provided by its general success in predicting nucleation behavior as a function of supersaturation and temperature. We emphasize that the qualitative features of the statistical mechanical models, particularly the critical super-saturation behavior that is central to the present work, are the same as those of the classical model. Of course, potential energy terms and surface partition functions replace the volume and surface energy terms of the latter model. The most recent versions of classical nucleation theory have been extensively reviewed.2,3,7 so that only the results are presented here. Iv 1897, Roberts-Austen(l)$ found an arrest in the thermal curves of alloys of 60 per cent. copper and 40 per cent. zinc. This break occurred from 450° to 470° C. Shepherd, (2) working in 1904, was unable to detect any change in the direction of the thermal curve. In 1911, Carpenter and Edwards(3) confirmed the work of Roberts-Austen and called this a eutectoid transformation of beta to alpha plus gamma. Hudson&apos;) in 1914, showed that the beta constituent could be produced synthetically at temperatures below the transformation point. He believed the change in the beta was polymorphic in nature rather than a eutectoid. The work of Matsuda(32) in 1922 demonstrated this break by thermal analysis, microscopic investigations, dilatation, electrical resistance measurements, and a thermoelectric study. He believed the transformation to be continuous from 300° to 480° C., and comparable to the A 2 transformation in iron. Later, in 1924, Andrew and Hay, with electrical resistance measurements, confirmed Matsuda&apos;s work. Imai(28) showed the transformation to be progressive and therefore a function of the temperature rather than the time. He stated that it was neither a eutectoid nor an allotropic change of phase. Atomistically expressed, it was a change, not of atomic configuration, but of atomic energy of some kind; and again it was compared to the A 2 transformation in iron. Imai believed that his analyses by X-rays led to the same conclusion. In order to study this change, at 470&apos;C., in homogeneous 60:40 brass, Homerberg and Williams «0> and Homerberg and Shaw(41) quenched their material in iced brine to obtain the beta solid solution and reheated at various temperatures. At 200° C., a change in the microstructure and physical properties occurred. A fine-grained structure, which they termed alpha and which had the appearance of a sorbitic steel, appeared, with an increase in the tensile strength to 82,750 lb. per sq. in., and a Brinell ball hardness of 240 with 3000 kg. load. A PREVIOUS paper1 reviewed some of the properties of clays and shales and presented some data on the nature of the gelling phenomenon. It included a brief discussion of origin of clays and shales, their com-position, structure, retention of water, ionization, base exchange, and the nature of the gelling of water suspensions, Other publications of the Institute2-8 have discussed the properties of clays and their relations to drilling-fluid behavior and control. It is the purpose of this article to present some new data obtained and arranged in a different manner and making possible a better understanding of the chemical reactions involved in the control of drilling-fluid characteristics during the normal drilling operations. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE The difficulties involved in the measurements of the flow character-istics of plastic fluids are too familiar to recite, The possible applications of some of the well-known instruments to this problem have been ade-quately discussed by Hobson9 and he has given an excellent bibliography. Although there are many viscosimeters of varied design, none of them appear to fulfill the most obvious demands of accuracy in the measure-ment of clay or shale suspensions, Since the fluid characteristics are dependent on the rate of flow of the fluid, and the viscosity usually falls off very rapidly as the rate is increased, it is clear that the first require-ment is that the instrument shall be capable of a wide variety of speeds. The viscosity of the fluid at any fixed and constant rate of flow is also a function of time, so that the second demand is that the instrument shall be capable of a constant and continuous motion for a prolonged period of time.

Marine mining is here defined as the commercial recovery of minerals other than oil and natural gas from the surface of, or below, the seabed by operations connected only indirectly with the land. The number of operations falling within this definition and the number of countries involved are remarkably limited in view of the widespread interest shown in marine mining prospects during the last few years. Marine mining is still restricted to continental shelves, where the only superficial minerals currently being mined are sand and gravel, calcium carbonate in different forms, and tin and iron sands.

ARTHUR JARMAN, Sydney, New South Wales, Australia (communication to the Secretary*) : All designs for modern metal¬lurgical and chemical laboratories should provide each student&apos;s desk with a hood or cupboard for the removal of fumes, but I doubt the advisability of placing air-baths and similar apparatus close to the hot plate. It seems to me that unless the draft be exceptionally strong the fumes from ordinary wet assay work will corrode the iron-work of the fittings, in which case the baths would have to be removed to a general desk in order to lighten the work of the laboratory attendant. Since the laboratory described by Mr. White has been in use for two years, I should like to ask if any inconvenience has resulted from this corrosion. If not, it is certainly an important improvement to have the air-baths and similar apparatus placed -on the student&apos;s desk. The hoods described by Mr. White are supplied with a good draft by means of a fan, which gives them a great advantage over those at the metallurgical laboratory at the University, Sydney, in that no doors to the hood are needed. Each hood in the laboratory at Sydney is connected by a glazed earthenware drain-pipe with a vertical flue, 20 ft. high, having a lighted gas jet at the bottom to assist the draft. Although the draft is good, fumes of sulphuric acid cannot be drawn o$ unless the doors of the hood are lowered more than half-way. In my opinion, a fan should be used for the purpose of creating the draft, and glazed drain-tile should invariably be used for the flues because no other material possesses the same advantages. 0 N March 5, at Carnegie Hall, Cleveland, the Ohio Section held a joint meeting with the Cleveland Engineering Society, and the local sections of the American Chemical Society, American Society of Mechanical Engineers, and the American Society for Steel Treating. Prior to the meeting there was an informal dinner attended by 50 men. Then followed an address, "The Principles of Corrosion Protection," by Ulick R. Evans, the well-known British specialist in this problem. There were 266 present, presided over by Zay Jeffries, president of the American Society for Steel Treating and a member of the Cleveland Engineering Society. The address was well received and some discussion followed

The world&apos;s largest steam-driven mine hoist, built by Nordberg Manufacturing Co. a half century ago, has become a major tourist attraction in Michigan&apos;s Upper Peninsula. The hoist, designed by company founder Bruno V. Nordberg, is located in the Quincy Mine Number Two, just north of Hancock. Nordberg began construction of the mammoth machine before World War I, but delayed completion until after the war. The hoist became operational in 1920 and continued running until the mine was shut down in 1931.

The year 1935 witnessed one of the world&apos;s oldest industries—gold mining—attain the stature of a billion dollar business. Preliminary estimates indicate that somewhat over 30,000,000 oz. of gold was produced, the largest output ever recorded and exceeding the previous year by more than 11 per cent. Of this huge total the Witwatersrand field produced about 10,800,000 oz., compared with 10,480,000 oz. in 1934. Russia was apparently the stellar performer, and from incomplete data it appears that between five and five and a half million ounces were produced by the Soviets compared with 4,200,000 last year and 2,814,000 in 1933. The United States nosed Canada out of third place with a production of 3,546,000 oz. against 2,916,000 in 1934, while Canada increased her total from 2,965,000 to 3,291,000 oz. Similarly, gains of lesser magnitude were made in Australia, the Gold Coast and other countries. As a result of great activity in developing outlying areas on the Rand, and the great number of new companies building mills in Canada, Australia, the Gold Coast and the United States, the years 1936 and 1937 should see new high records, as these new producers will more than offset any decline in the older properties. The whole world has become "gold conscious" during the past three years. It has been the subject of innumerable articles by economists and others, but, unfortunately, because of their lack of actual mining knowledge, they have treated the production of gold as a static affair, ignoring geological and technical factors. It is hardly necessary to draw attention to the fact that the world&apos;s gold-mining industry was slowly but steadily shrinking in importance, owing to the gradual depletion of known deposits that were profitable to work at costs existing prior to 1929. The International Geological Congress at Pretoria and the League of Nations Committee drew attention to the estimates of the mining experts of the various governments predicting a steady falling off in world production. The tensile behaviors of the CsCl structure compound AgMg are extensively documented in terms of strain, strain rate, temperature, composition, and metallurgical processing treatment. The observations lend themselves to presentation in terns of three regimes of deformation behavior; 1) low temperatures where deformation is primarily by slip; 2) intermediate temperatures where the deformation mode is also slip but with the detailed behavior dominated by dislocation interactions with solute atoms; 3) high temperatures where defomation is primarily by diffusion controlled processes. Of all the material groups of potential interest as high-temperature structural materials, the inter-metallics have been the least studied, particularly with respect to their mechanical behavior. Moreover, the application and processing of intermetallics for uses which exploit their often unique physical properties have been impeded by a lack of understanding of their mechanical properties. Previous work in this area* has been largely *For a recent review, see Westbrook.&apos; exploratory, aimed on the one hand at the direct empirical development of materials of engineering utility and ,on the other at identification of the important parameters affecting the mechanical behavior of inter metallics. As a consequence, there has not been available, heretofore—for any inter-metallic—data, sufficient in extent or precision to provide an adequate phenomenological description of the effects of metallurgical variables on deformation behavior. Such documentation is prerequisite to intelligent application or processing design and is also necessary for testing present and future theoretical analyses of mechanical behavior. It was therefore an objective of the present investigation to document the deformation behavior of a simple ordered intermetallic over as wide a range as possible of all the usual metallurgical variables. The compound AgMg was chosen as the subject of this investigation because it met all of a group of desired criteria, namely: 1) congruent but moderate melting point; 2) simple crystal structure; 3) ordered structure persisting to the melting point; 4) broad solubilities for the component elements.
