THE stability and permanence of any structural material used in aircraft are of paramount importance. The spontaneous hardening, or age-hardening; which takes place in some of the aluminum alloys under ordinary conditions of temperature and atmosphere, is accompanied by an increase in tensile strength and proportional limit and a decrease in elongation or ductility. Within the last few years the introduction of a number of strong and ductile casting alloys led to a study by the Materiel Division, Air Corps, of the permanence of the physical properties in several of these alloys. It has been found that even though some alloys have good properties directly after casting or heat treatment, they are not satisfactory for stressed parts that require a combination of strength and ductility. It has also led to the conclusion that all alloys that can be hardened by artificial aging-heating in a temperature range below 170° C. (340° F.)-will harden spontaneously if allowed to stand for a sufficient length of time. It follows that, in aircraft work where the factors of safety are limited on account of the necessity of keeping the weight of the structures as low as possible consistent with their safe operation, the properties of the alloys in the stable or final condition should be used as a basis for design rather than the properties obtained on the material directly after casting. The work of Wilm in Germany, Hanson and Gayler at the National Physical Laboratory in England, and Merica, Jeffries, and others in the United States, has shown that the spontaneous hardening is characteristic to a greater or less extent in all aluminum-base alloys in which the solubility in the solid state of the alloying constituents decreases with the temperature. It has been shown that, by heating to a temperature as near as possible to the melting point of the material and soaking at that temperature for a sufficient length of time and then quenching or cooling rapidly, a maximum amount of the soluble constituents can be retained in solution and the condition of maximum hardening effect upon aging can be obtained. Also, in ordinary sand and chill castings, without heat treatment, a sufficient amount of the alloying constituents is held in solution to cause important changes in the final physical properties.

The changes in superconducting properties with aging time have been studied ,for the pecipitation reaction in a Tc-30 at. pct V alloy. Superconducting critical temperature, upper critical field, and relative critical current density were determined by ac susceptibility techniques. Aging produces changes in critical temperature of both matrix and precipitate which can be rationalized by compositional effects. maximum flux pinning (critical current density) occurs at a time during aging when subgrain boundaries are completely decorated with precipitates and the subgrain centers remain precipitate -free. The particular effectiveness as barriers to flux motion of planar defects which enclose regions of low deject density is discussed. THE precipitation of a second phase can dramatically modify the superconducting properties of type I1 super-conductors. According to Livingston and Schadler1 one might expect changes in the primary, secondary, and tertiary superconducting properties of the material. Changes in matrix chemistry caused by precipitation can alter the fundamental superconducting parameters; critical temperature, Tc, and thermody-namic critical field, Hc. The concimitant changes in electron mean free path (reflected in normal state resistivity) can affect the critical fields Hc 1, IIc2, Hc3. Finally, the presence of precipitate particles may hinder the motion of flux lines and may considerably improve the current-carrying capacity in high-field superconductors. The influence of precipitation on superconducting properties has been studied in a number of systems.2 Magnetization measurements have been used to study the influence of precipitates on flux pinning in lead-base alloys by Livingston3 and Evetts et al4 In these alloys precipitates induced magnetic hysteresis and flux trapping. The amount of hysteresis increased with the volume fraction of precipitate and decreased with coarsening of the precipitate. Jn an Al-Zn alloy5 and an A1-Ag alloy6 the initial precipitate size was presumably smaller than a coherence length and coarsening increased magnetic hysteresis5 and critical current density.6 The influence of precipitation on superconducting properties has also been studied in several of the commercially interesting Ti-Nb7-10 and zr-Nb11 alloys. The maximum in critical current density for these alloys was confined to a narrow range of either isothermal aging time" or isochronal aging temperature7 during the precipitation reaction. Thus, experimental evidence and theoretical considerations suggest there is an optimum precipitate size, spacing, and density, and a critical composition with respect to the matrix for flux pinning. What these "optimum" values might be and the relative importance of each is still not clear, although a few generalizations can be made. It is generally accepted1' that particle sizes smaller than the coherence length or larger than the inter-flux line spacing are poor pinning centers. In high Hc2 materials, precipitate sizes for maximum values of critical current density lie in the range of 50 to 2000Å,9,7 and there are indications that increasing dissimilarity between precipitate and matrix produces increasing pinning force.13 Because of several interesting features of the aging reaction in a Tc-30 pct V alloy, we have chosen to study the influence of precipitation on the superconducting properties of this alloy. The physical metallurgy14 and a survey of the superconducting properties" of the Tc-V alloy system have been reported. The Tc-V phase diagram is presented in Fig. 1. At 1500°C the Tc-30 pct V alloy is in the single phase 6 field. Samples quenched from the 6-phase field have a CsCl structure X-ray diffraction pattern at room temperature and it has been proposed that the 6 structure is closely related to the bcc lattice.14 When held isothermally below the eutectoid temperature, 115O°C, the 6 phase decomposes into the CsCl and hcp phases.

The surface self-diffusion coefficient of copper (D,) has been measured between 847° and 1069 "C for six different orientations. These were the(111), (110, (100, and three higher index surfaces. The activation energy for Ds (designated Q s) was found to be about 49 kcal per mol for all six surfaces, and Do about 2 x 104 sq cm per sec. At any temperature Ds varied by no more than a factor of three over these orientations. It is shown that, if the free energy of a surface atom is uniquely determined by its number of nearest neighbors, it follows from the Principle of microscopic reversibility that Qs should have the same value for all surface orientations, and Ds should vary little with orientation. This model also suggests that for clean fee metals Qs ~ 2/3 AH, (heat of vaporization). This is true for copper. ALTHOUGH it has been appreciated for several decades that atoms can diffuse more rapidly on a surface than through the bulk of a crystal, it has only been in the last few years that reliable values of the surface self-diffusion coefficient (Ds) have become available. Tracer studies of Ds had been attempted prior to this period, but when a tracer is placed on a surface, an ever increasing fraction of it is drained off into the lattice. The correction for this loss involves a very difficult, and as yet unperformed calculation. Those who have worked with tracers have not corrected for this loss.1, 2 Thus their results indicate that Ds is greater than the self-diffusion coefficient in the lattice (Dl), but it has not been established that they give quantitative data on Ds. A procedure which avoids the problem of tracer loss is to study the rate of mass-transfer under the effect of surface tension. If the surface asperity being studied is very small, the mass transfer occurs entirely by surface diffusion. The kinetics at which a grain boundary groove forms on an initially plane surface is a well-studied case of this type. The smoothing of a slight scratch in an otherwise flat surface is another procedure that has been studied. If these grooves are up to 20 to 30 µ in width, the dominant mechanism for mass transfer is surface diffusion (at least in the case of metals with low vapor pressures), and the widths can easily be measured with an interference microscope. Of these two, mass-transfer techniques only in the case of grain boundary grooving has a rigorous mathematical treatment been given. This was done by Mullins.3,4 His analysis predicted that in the case of copper in an atmosphere of an inert gas, surface diffusion should be the dominant transport mechanism. This analysis gave an equation for the groove profile and predicted that the width of the groove would increase as (time)1/4. Mullins and Shewmon showed that both of these predictions agreed with experiments.5 Thus the validity of the values of Ds given by this procedure seems to be well established. Gjostein has used copper bicrystals and the grain boundary grooving technique to determine Ds and the activation energy for surface selfdiffusion (9,) in the [001] direction on surfaces ranging between the (100) and (110) planes.= He reported that Qs = 41 kcal per mole and Do = 6.5 x 102 sq cm per sec for all orientations studied. Since the results did not change with the dew-point of the dry hydrogen atmosphere or the type of refractory tube used, he concluded that the surfaces were clean, or at least that the results were not influenced by any impurities chemisorbed from the atmosphere. The work reported here reproduces and extends Gjostein's study in that D s and Q s were determined for copper over a wider range of orientations. To study the effects of impurities, two purities of copper were used as well as cathodic etching to remove any possible electropolishing film. Gjostein postulated that the diffusing atoms on a surface near a low index plane are the few atoms which are adsorbed on the smooth region between ledges or steps in the surface. A more rigorous derivation of the equation relating Ds to the concentration and jump frequency of these adsorbed atoms is given here. Using this treatment, our empirical observation that Q s and D s are essentially the same for all surface orientations can be shown to follow from the assumption that the free energy of a surface atom is uniquely determined by its number of nearest neighbors. The studies of D s using the scratch technique have been carried out by Blakely and Mukura on nickel,' and by Geguzin and Oveharenko on copper. The latter study using copper gives values of D s roughly

High temperature steady-state creep rates have been determined jor lead sulfide single crystals whose defect concentrations were fixed by equilibration under controlled sulfur pressure. The activation energy of creep, Qc , for undoped lead sulfide, is a function 01 composilion, decreasing from 2.9 to 2.2 ev as the carrier concentration increases from 9 x 1016 to 8 1018 electrons cm-3 for lead excess crystals, and increasing from 1.7 to 2.3 ev as the concentration of holes increases from 4 x 1017 to 1 x 1018 cm-3 in sulfur excess material. For five different composilions, Qc for undoped and bismuth-doped crystals has been found to be equal to Qpb + Qs, the self-diffusion activation energies for lead and sulfur in PbS. It is well-established1 that high-temperature steady-state creep of pure metals is a diffusion-controlled process, where the activation energy of creep is equal, within experimental error, to the activation energy of self-diffusion. The relationship between the activation energy for steady-state creep and those for self-diffusion in binary compounds is more complicated, however, because two different diffusing species must be considered, and becayse the activation energies may be influenced by compositional variations and by foreign atom additions.2-4 In some cases experimentally determined creep activation energies are correlated with those for self-diffusion of the slower-moving species, but such agreement is by no means universal. Interpretation of experimental results is difficult because few investigations include measurements of creep rates and self-diffusion coefficients of both diffusing species on single crystals of similar composition and foreign atom concentration. The objective of this investigation, therefore, is to determine the influence of stoichiometric defects and foreign atoms on steady-state creep and self-diffusion for a well-characterized binary compound. Lead sulfide, a compound semiconductor which crystallizes in the NaC1-type structure, and whose homogeneity range includes compositions on either side of the 1:l atom ratio, was chosen for study in this investigation. The pressure-temperature-composition relations for PbS are available,5,3 and deviations from stoichiometry may be monitored by electrical measurements.7 Single-crystal specimens are available to allow observation of effects due to bulk phenomena without interference from grain-boundary effects. These crystals have been employed to determine steady-state creep rates under compressive stress for "pure" and bismuth-doped PbS as a function of sulfur pressure and temperature as well as crystal orientation and applied stress in order to establish the relationships between defect concentrations and creep rates. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURES Crystal Growth. Lead sulfide crystals, prepared by the Bridgman method, are grown in evacuated quartz crucibles, filled with almost equal atomic proportions of high-purity (99.999 pct) lead and sulfur, and heated to a temperature above the melting point of PbS (about 1127°C) so that the lead and sulfur react to form molten PbS. The crucible and melt are dropped through the hot zone of the crystal-growing furnace at the rate of 1 cm per hr. The maximum melting point of PbS is slightly on the lead-rich side of the 50:50 composition; hence crystals grown from a near stoichiometric melt are usually n-type semiconductors containing excess lead atoms. Typically the lead excess concentration in solid solution with the PbS is 3 x 1018 atoms cm-3. Crystals containing either 1/20 or 1/2 mole pct Bi2S3 were prepared by addition of the foreign atoms prior to crystal synthesis. Preparation of Specimens of Controlled Stoichiom-etry. Since it is difficult to grow crystals of desired composition, the process of crystal growth and control of stoichiometry are separated into two distinct operations. Equilibration of as-grown PbS to a desired composition is most easily accomplished by first annealing the n-type crystals under high sulfur pressure (about 1 atm) at temperatures above 700°C. This process serves to put excess lead precipitates into solution, yielding 0 -type crystals upon quenching to room temperature. Inter diffusion occurs readily in crystals so treated, and the methods described by Bloem may then be employed to obtain crystals of controlled stoi-chiometry. For the creep measurements made in this study, this involves heating crystals in mixtures of H2 and H2S The equilibrium constant for H2S is given by: Thus the sulfur partial pressure is obtained from knowledge of the H2/H2S ratio and Kh2S for the temperature in question. Fig. 1 shows the p-T-x diagram for PbS. It can be seen that, within the stability limits for single-phase lead sulfide, desired compositions may be obtained by equilibrating under a specified sulfur pressure and temperature. Characterization of Crystals. The principal methods for evaluating PbS crystals include measurement of electrical properties and mass-spectrographic analysis. The measured electrical parameters include Hall coefficient, conductivity type, and electrical resistivity Bloem7 has shown that there is a 1:l relation between the defect concentration and carrier concentration obtained. The use of nuclear explosives for excavation has been demonstrated to be feasible and practical. Application of nuclear explosives for overburden removal from large ore deposits appears to offer economic advantages over present methods, but under the present pricing schedule, high-yield devices must be used to obtain an economic advantage. The use of nuclear explosives presents problems not inherent in the use of conventional explosives, and thus they can be used only in areas where large explosions and associated phenomena can be tolerated. Stripping of coal with nuclear explosives does not appear practical at this time, but stripping overburden from copper or iron ore deposits may be a potential use. Even here, however, the use of nuclear explosives would require isolation, favorable topography, favorable ground-water conditions, and a low population density. If these basic requirements can be met, the use of nuclear explosives for overburden removal would offer both economic and time advantages. The possibility of using nuclear explosives for peaceful purposes was a subject for speculation as early as 1945. The PLOWSHARE Program was formally established by the AEC in June 1957 for the purpose of developing and demonstrating peaceful applications for nuclear explosives. The technical direction of the program is the responsibility of the Lawrence Radiation Laboratory, Livermore, Calif. Mining and excavation were two fields that received early consideration as areas in which nuclear explosives might be used. Knowledge gained from underground weapons testing increased this possibility, and the development of the thermonuclear device which has a small fission-to-fission ratio, reduced the hazard of radiation, and spurred interest. Nuclear explosives appear to have the greatest potential in the following mining operations: 1.— Surface Mining a) Stripping of waste for open-pit excavation b) Breaking of ore in open-pit mining c) Quarrying d) Blasting for production of aggregate, riprap, etc. 2. — Underground Mining a) Block caving application b) Crushing of ore for in-situ leaching, etc. c) Preparation of underground waste disposal areas Of the potential applications, excavation is perhaps the most obvious and the best understood, and probably the most practical for use in the near future. Large quantities of rock and earth can be moved by proper emplacement of nuclear explosives, but economic and practical relationship must be determined between the known capabilities of nuclear explosives and the required excavating to remove overburden. REMOVING OVERBURDEN IN OPEN-PIT MINING Removing the overburden is one of the largest jobs in open-pit mining. In 1960 open-pit mines produced approximately 130 million tons of coal, 108 million tons of copper ore, and 135 million tons of iron ore. To obtain this much production, an estimated 3-billion tons of overburden were removed from the coal, 216 million tons from the copper ore, and 135 million tons from the iron ore. These figures do not include the initial stripping required before ore production. For example, the ASARCO Mission mine started stripping operations in August 1959 and by mid-November 1961 had removed 46.3 million tons of material including 1.2 million tons of ore.* Initial excavation of this type offers the most favorable conditions for utilizing the earth-moving ability of nuclear explosives. EXPLOSIVE CASTING FOR REMOVING OVERBURDEN The use of explosives to remove overburden is not a new idea. Conventional explosives have been used for this purpose for many years with varying degrees of success. Several small coal strip operators have used this idea to increase production. At these mines about one-third or more of the overburden is thrown by explosives across the pit and onto spoil piles. The additional costs of drilling more blast holes and more explosives are more than compensated for by a reduction in the time required to uncover the coal, and by an increase in coal production.

COAL EXPLORATION Coal exploration may be defined as the acquisition of data necessary to define and acquire a block of coal which can be mined at a profit. Unlike ore minerals, coal resources are widespread and relatively abundant with supply exceeding demand in almost every case. Thus simple discovery of coal is generally not enough. The chemical and physical variability of individual coal seams, the capital intensive nature of coal mine development, and the changing patterns of utilization require that a multiphase, three-dimensional evaluation be made of each potential reserve. Factors which must be investigated include not only the quantity and quality of the coal but also the geologic, hydrologic, and engineering characteristics of the seam and its surrounding strata. Acquisition of property to provide a secure base for exploration and mine development is equal in importance to the geologic and engineering programs. The successful development of a coal reserve requires that control of coal and, in the case of a strip mine, the surface be in the form of contiguous blocks of sufficient size to support mining. PHASES OF EXPLORATION The high capital risks of coal exploration and land acquisition dictate that a multiphase program be utilized to minimize initial risk. In such a program, phased development of the data insures that each increase in capital expenditures will be justified by a corresponding increase in the level of confidence in the ultimate success of the project. Each phase is designed to provide sufficient data and property control to facilitate the decision whether to proceed to the next phase of development or to discontinue the program (Table 1). Production and financial planning for a new underground mine requires the coordination of equipment and coal reserves in a manner which assures that resources are utilized efficiently in achieving the target mine production. It is necessary to establish the productions which are attainable at the section level during different mining operations (advance, retreat, development) and under different mining conditions (roof, seam height, resource quality). It is also necessary to identify the interactions between production plans and ventilation equipment So that operations can be carried out without disruptions caused by inadequate ventilation. A set of computer models has been applied in planning a number of new coal, oil shale, and phosphate mines. A critical path production model, CPMINE, was used to determine face production levels for different cut sequences and seam heights, taking into account machine performance characteristics and operational availabilities under these varying conditions. The results formed a production data base for use in the mine sequencing model, MPLAN. This model processes each of the segments of a user-defined mine sequence network (strategy tree) taking into account the equipment available for mining operations and the previously determined production scheme devised by the mining engineer. Mine ventilation was analyzed with an expanded version of the Penn State MVS Ventilation model to determine fan and ventilation shaft requirements for supporting alternative production strategies. The MCOM mine cost analysis model has been applied to evaluate the economic performance of mining alternatives. The results of these studies were used to make decisions relating to equipment selection and acquisition schedules for both room-and-pillar and longwall mining systems. The approach and procedures which were used during these studies are described.

When an oil operator becomes a party to a proration agreement he may wonder, with good cause, whether production prorated .today is merely deferred until tomorrow or whether oil might be lost. Various types of evidence obtained from production records when studied quantitatively are of great assistance in arriving at definite conclusions. A study of individual examples cited in this paper leads towards some solution of the problem, particularly when they are considered in the aggregate. Many production curves on various pay horizons were studied. A disappointingly large number of these were of contributory value, but inconclusive. However, there were enough curves of similar type from the Wilcox sand at Earlsboro, Bowlegs, Seminole City, the Cromwell horizon at Little River, and the Simpson dolomite at Valley Center, Kansas, from which reasonably definite conclusions were drawn. Assuming that deferred production is later made up with no increase in ultimate recovery, a curve (Fig. 1) shows the normal flowing and pumping life of a composite well, contructed by the family curve method. The initial production of the well shown is 1700 bbl. daily and the allowed production is 25 per cent. On this basis the average daily allowed rate for the first month is 425 bb1., or the area BCDE, which is equivalent to the area AFDG under the normal decline curve. The potential production for the second month is 1500 bbl. and the allowed production 375 bbl. daily. By this procedure a potential curve for each succeeding month is obtained (points A, H, I, J and K). If the well is opened it should produce somewhere near its potential curve for a short period and then decline at a more rapid rate than the potential curve. This theoretical analysis is basic. Actual examples exhibiting all points raised by the ideal curve are rare. Proration in the Mid-Continent area has been effected mostly by leases rather than by individual wells; hence a well may produce any

In this paper a heterogeneous carbonate reservoir is considered as a succession of layers of formations of radically different porosities, permeabilities, water saturations, and rock matrix types; i.e., the heterogeneity is vertical rather than radial to the wellbore. Presumably each layer is more or less homogeneous. To determine the "net oil in place" in this reservoir it is desirable to know the porosity and water saturation of each layer. In addition, the section must be subdivided into that which will produce oil, that which will produce water, and that which will produce little or nothing. In numerous wells drilled in these reservoirs radioactivity surveys, guard electrode surveys, and caliper surveys have been made. These logs have been compared with core analysis data, when available, and the analysis of the surveys compared with production data. This study, still in progress, is intended to provide improved analytical techniques if such are possible. This paper is a progress report on the work. DETERMINATION OF POROSITY The neutron-gamma log has long been recognized as a measure of hydrogen concentration.1,2,3 In reservoirs that are free of clay, shale, or other hydrogen containing matrices, it has been accepted as a measure of porosity.4,5 Empirical methods to relate relative neu-tron-gamma intensity to porosity are often employed." To provide a more precise determination of porosity from the neutron-gamma log each instrument is calibrated immediately prior to each survey by a method which refers all tools to a hydrogenous cylinder. To insure stability a calibration check is made after each survey. These calibration records are printed as an integral part of the log that is recorded in standard counts per second. A detailed description of the calibration procedure is available in the literature.' The procedure employed insures that each Survey is numerically reproducible within the limits of statistical variation. To relate the standard neutron counts per second to porosity and hole size, records were made in test wells constructed of blocks of limestone. The porosities of the blocks were accurately measured and the blocks completely saturated with fresh water. Fig. 1 presents some of the results obtained in these test wells.' The lines shown in Fig. 1 were obtained by deriving an empirical equation relating the 11 points shown so that the relationship may be projected to larger and smaller hole sizes. A detailed description of the tool is available in the literature.' Field tests indicate that the tool is adjacent to the wall of the hole most of the time when the surveys are made in uncased holes drilled with saline muds. In this circumstance porosity may be calculated from Fig. 1 if the hole size is known. When fresh muds that form thick mud cakes are employed, the centralizing effect of the mud cake must be considered and the porosity determination is less reliable. In cased holes the combined effect of variations in hole diameter and the unknown eccentricity of the casing in the hole may make porosity determinations extremely unreliable. Teamwork: The famous first sentence of an essay en- titled Aphorisms, by Hippocrates, is as follows: "Life is short, the Art long, opportunity fleeting, experience treacherous, judgment difficult." The future of science does not depend so much on the number of scientists or the number of colleges, but rather on the individual qualities and the degree of perfection of a limited group of leading scientists and colleges. These are individual factors which require inherent talent which in turn is a condition evolved after generations of culture. Thus, very elaborate higher education for indiscriminate masses of humanity or students may not necessarily show the expected results. In other words, it is possible that higher specialized education should be given only to the few talented individuals, and their capacity and worth should be judged by as highly qualified and talented teachers. Quality is the greatest of all competitive aids. An essential qualification that must be possessed by a quality mineral industries college is a high caliber teaching staff, for the mineral sciences will advance in the coming years only if the leading minds of today are made avail- able as the mental springboards for our scientists of tomorrow. Mineral industries schools are finding it increasingly difficult to maintain a high caliber staff of instructors and administrators in competition with private business and governmental demands for similar

Large deposits of titaniferous iron-ore occur at Caribou, an old silver-mining camp in Boulder county, Colo., 17 miles west by south of Boulder, and a few miles northwest of the tungsten-mines. Professor Regis Chauvenet1 published a part analysis of the ore many years ago, but gave no description of the wall-rock. Caribou hill, which contains both the silver-bearing veins and the iron-ore deposits, is a low dome of gabbro surrounded by the Archæan schists and gneisses of the Front range of the Rocky mountains, the peaks of which, a few miles west of Caribou, attain an elevation exceeding 12,000 ft. The gabbro stock is roughly elliptical in outline, with approximate diameters of 1 and 3 miles. The crest of the dome is 10,500 ft. above sea-level, and the town and ore-cleposits are 500 ft. lower. Outcrops of the iron-ore occur in the town and extend NW. for 2,000 ft., where they disappear under the swampy meadows of Caribou park. Portions of the deposit are covered by drift, but one continuous outcrop is 900 ft. long and from 200 to 250 ft. wide. A second deposit is 0.25 mile south of the town along the eastern slope of the hill. It is not as well defined as the north bed, but is approximately 1,000 ft. long and from 100 to 200 ft. wide. The easily disintegrated ore does not form prominent outcrops, but the outlines of the deposits are readily traced by the large amount of ore fragments that cover the ground. Trenches and pits sunk on the outcrop expose a roughly banded magnetic iron-ore, with pyroxene as the principal gangue-mineral. The Gabbro. This rock was classified in the field as a gabbro from the presence of pyroxene and striated feldspars, and for convenience the field-name will be retained.

THOSE who live in steel-mill towns are so accustomed to the sight of flames spouting from the mouth of a Bessemer vessel that they seldom pause to think of the amazing process behind it. Actually cold air is being blown through a hot liquid and, instead of cooling it, raises the temperature of the liquid. When coffee is too hot to drink, we know that blowing on it will cool it, so it was no wonder that when Henry Bessemer (or William Kelly, as your patriotism chooses) first proposed this cycle of steel production, he was considered mad. When Bessemer and Kelly started their investigations around 1852, there was not much practical knowledge of metallurgy and, in consequence, there was wide variation in the product made by their process. It was appreciated that the silicon, carbon and iron were all potential fuels, but not until Mushet discovered the beneficial effects of having manganese in the pig iron did the process really become commercial. Bessemer's patent of 1855 covered a crucibleful of liquid iron into which a refractory tuyere was lowered and the blow started. Since that time virtually every conceivable form of vessel, bottom arrangement, tuyere size and location have been suggested or tried. There have been stationary vessels with fixed bottoms, that were side, top or bottom blown; tilting vessels with two sets of side tuyeres at different elevations; vessels like a three-compartment septic tank; vessels of a cylindrical form supported on the long axis with tuyeres along the side submerged by a partial rotation of the vessel (this type continues in copper refineries) ; portable vessels to make the blow in a ladle over a mold in a foundry; a combination of a cupola and converter in one shell, and various other arrangements. But in all these experiments, compressed air for the blast was presupposed and there was little discussion of the quantity or quality of the air delivered to the tuyeres. At one time or another various practices that now are forgotten have been tried or suggested: for instance, the use of inert gas at the end of the blow; the addition of fuel to the blast; the use of hot-blast stoves; the drying of the air to a minimum moisture in the blast. Except in the last-named method little attention was paid to the quality or quantity of the air blown. PHASES Of the many papers published on various phases of the Bessemer process, nearly 170 according to one bibliography, over go per cent were concerned with the metallurgical phase and less than 10 per cent discussed various sections of the pneumatic phase. Since the two phases are coincidental, apparently nine times as much thought has been given to the result as has been given to one of the causes of the Bessemer process. Is it not possible that if more attention had been paid to the pneumatics so many papers would not have had to be written on the troubles in the metallurgical phase? Vapov pressure data of solid and liquid alloys along with phase diagram data WERE employed in calculating the thermodynamic properties for the Ca-Zn system. Relations for the standard free energy of fortnation for the eight cornpounds were developed. ThE phase diagram for the Ca-Zn system as determined by Messing et a1.' is reproduced in Fig. 1. Earlier work on the phase diagram has been summarized by Hansen and Anderko2 and the very limited thermodynamic information for this system has been reviewed by Hultgren et a1.3 The heat of fusion for the compound CaZn2 has recently been determined to be 9260 cal per mole.4 Solubility data for calcium in zinc for the temperature range of 650" to 725°C were fitted by the relation and reported by Johnson and Dilloon5 In the present investigation zinc vapor pressure data were obtained by both the dewpoint and Knudsen methods in order to calculate the thermodynamic properties for liquid and solid alloys. The dewpoint method as employed in this work requires that only one of the components be significantly volatile, in this case zinc, and that the vapor pressure of pure zinc be known. For calculation purposes the vapor pressure data for pure zinc3 were fitted to the relations; for temperatures below 692.7K, the melting point of zinc. The corresponding free-energy relations for vaporization and sublimation of pure zinc are respectively. Some of the calculations also required knowledge of the free energy of fusion of zinc and calcium and the free energy for the 721°K allotropic transformation of calcium. The free energy of fusion of zinc was taken to be the difference between Eqs. [4] and [5], or The free energy of fusion and transition for calcium were based on the enthalpy values of 2040 and 222 cal per g-atom, respectively, as reported by Chiotti et al. 4 and the heat capacity data given by Hultgren et a1.3 and are represented by the relations, In the latter expression the difference in heat capacity between the a and 0 forms of calcium was neglected. MATERIALS AND EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURES The metals used in preparing the alloys were Bunker Hill slab zinc, 99.99 pct pure, and Ames Laboratory calcium. The average impurities in the calcium in parts per million by weight, ppm, were N-17, H—77, Ba—216, Mg-15, Si—7, C—157, and Fe—9. The zinc was cleaned in dilute nitric acid and the calcium was used as received. The calcium was stored and handled in an argon-filled glove box and when removed from the dry box it was kept in an argon-filled desiccator. Tantalum was found to be a suitable alloy container. The use of ball, rod and tube mills for grinding ore, cement and other materials has grown so rapidly during the past forty years that the world's annual consumption of ferrous grinding media for these mills is now estimated to be between one half million and one million tons per year. Ferrous grinding balls constitute the major portion of this tonnage. Obviously they represent suficient value to justify thorough studies of the factors governing their performance. The selection of grinding balls is governed principally by: I. Quality (wear resistance, impact resistance, soundness, and the like). 2. Sources of supply and delivered cost. 3. Grinding characteristics or efficiency in the ball mill. This paper deals principally with the quality of ferrous grinding balls. In the study of these factors certain data relative to the fundamental nature of ball wear in ball mills have been obtained. These data are also presented and discussed briefly. The Development of a Suitable Wear Test A study of the fundamental factors governing the quality of grinding balls has been hampered seriously by the fact that a competent test has, in the past, involvetd the purchase of several hundred tons of halls of a specific type which were then run in one or more ball mills for a period ranging from several months' to several years' duration. Often, during the period of test, it became necessary to change operating conditions or the character of the ore fed to the test mill with the result that the rate of ball consumption changed and the test figures became of little value. Under such circumstances, progress in the development of better grinding balls, has been necessarily slow. Economic factors and variations in the quality of balls produced by different sources of supply generally make it necessary for each mill operator to determine for himself the most suitable type of balls for his mills. In our own ball mill grinding operations at Climax, Colo., we were faced with this problem. After we had run a few large scale wear tests at considerable expense we decided to investigate the possibilities of a small scale wear test which would be capable of testing numerous types of balls within a relatively short time. The most important requirement of any test is, of course, that it give results which can be used to predict accurately the wear in full scale operations. It was known that Ellis and his associates1'2 had developed a method of testing grinding balls by small scale tests run at the Ontario Research Foundation. Ellis' method of testing was used as a starting point in our investigations. In the course of our tests a number of modifications of the original method were found to be desirable so that, by an evolutionary procedure, a method of small scale

SUBSTANTIAL deposits of Bessemer hematite have been found recently by drilling beneath Steep Rock Lake, Ontario, which is situated in the northern part of the Lake Superior Region. It will be practicable to divert the waters flowing into this lake and develop open pits on the upper part of two large ore bodies by damming off and pumping out the water in the part of the lake in which they occur. Ultimately, the bulk of the ore will be mined by underground methods. Owing to the generally massive nature of the rocks in the area, no underground flows of major consequence are anticipated after diversion of the lake. The Steep Rock deposits are attributed in origin to hydrothermal replacement. They were formed, for the most part, along an unconformable, brecciated contact between the Steep Rock limestone and an overlying younger volcanic series. The replacing solutions came in as igneous after-effects, following upon the intrusion of basic igneous rocks that invaded the hanging-wall volcanics. It is believed that this took place in a geological period roughly equivalent to late Middle Huronian, which was the period when the most extensive iron-bearing rocks of the Lake Superior Region were formed. Comparison is made with other deep-seated iron-ore bodies in the Lake Superior Region, the origins of which are ascribed in the discussion to hydrothermal replacement.

For the seventh consecutive year, the value of nonfuel mineral raw ma¬terials produced in the US set a new record, reaching almost $20 billion-up 12.7% from the previous year, according to the US Bureau of Mines. The Bureau reported that this mineral production was the basis for about $200 billion worth of processed materials of mineral origin.
