FEW people realize the tremendously important part that Saline and Pulaski Counties in central Arkansas have played in the winning of the war. The present favorable war situation might have been very different if we had not had the bauxite produced during the past two years from these two small areas, a total of about 15 square miles. As a general statement, it can be said that the Arkansas bauxite deposits are, individually, relatively small, irregular in thickness, somewhat scattered and, therefore, compared with coal or iron-ore or open-pit copper deposits, relatively ill adapted to a rapid and drastic expansion in output. A few years ago it would have seemed an impossibility for these two counties to produce over six million long dry tons of bauxite in one year. However, with the cooperation of the operators, that is what happened in 1943, when the state of Arkansas achieved the seemingly impossible with a production of 6,020,684 1 long tons (dried equivalent) of bauxite ore during the calendar year, compared with an average annual production of 323,725 2 tons in the period 1931 to 1941. It became apparent early in the year 1941 that the United States soon might be drawn into the war, and, therefore, that an immediate study of the domestic metal situation was necessary. Aluminum is by far the most important metal used in the manufacture of aircraft and many other implements of war and it was evident that there would have to be a tremendous increase in the domestic production of bauxite, which is practically the only present source of this metal. As more than 95 per cent of the known bauxite reserves of the United States was in Arkansas, careful preliminary studies were made in that state by representatives of the United States Bureau of Mines, the United States Geological Survey and the War Production Board in the summer of 1941. Reserves in other states also Were studied. The result of these studies was a recommendation by the War Production Board that mining in the bauxite-producing areas of Arkansas be geared for maximum production, in order to supply sufficient ore for this country's war requirements and, if necessary, to supply the war needs of Canada as well. The annual goal of eight million long tons (dry Weight) set for Arkansas by the War Production Board Was exceeded in 1943, when in August the output reached a rate equivalent to more than 8,300,000 long tons, dry basis. Because of the comparatively small tonnage of bauxite reserves, Congress appropriated funds for an extensive drilling program to be carried out by the Bureau of Mines in cooperation with the Geological Survey. Drilling began in May 1942 but owing to delay in delivery of drills, and trucks upon which the drills were mounted, the program did not get into peak operation until early in 1943. WHEN the word gas is mentioned in connection with mining, almost invariably it is inferred that the explosive gas, methane, is in mind and that it must refer to coal mining. While it is true that methane occurs, or is likely to occur, in almost any or all coal mines, it is also a fact that the metal mines of the world have in them by far a greater variety of gases than have the coal mines. In many cases the gases in metal mines are as dangerous to individuals as the gases likely to be found in coal mines; in some instances the metal mine gases are even more deadly. The coal mine is more likely to have methane than the metal mine, in rare instances it may have high percentages of nitrogen or high carbon dioxide, or there may be a deficiency of oxygen where the air is confined in a blind end or in a sealed region; much more rarely there are found in coal mines in relatively small percentages, ethane, or other hydrocarbons with odor of ether, gasoline or kerosene, or there may be minute percentages of hydrogen sulfide. In time of coal mine fire or explosion, there is likely to be high carbon monoxide (4 per cent. or over in some cases) and if the coal contains much sulfur, there may be some sulfur dioxide in the fire fumes. In metal mines there are a number of cases of occurrence of methane and attendant explosions; some metal mines have appreciable percentages of the decidedly explosive hydrogen; in some metal-mining regions carbon dioxide flows into the mine, fills the workings and overflows just like water. In other regions, at many working faces there are high-temperature gases containing a mixture of gases of sulfur (sulfur dioxide, hydrogen sulfide and possibly SO3 in some cases) together with carbon dioxide and nitrogen, and the deadly hydrogen sulfide in lethal proportions is found in some high-sulfide metal mines at blasting time. Carbon monoxide constitutes a decidedly dangerous day by day hazard in connection with metal-mine blasting, because of the heavy charges of dynamite that are used and the use of fuse, which in burning gives off much carbon monoxide. The poisonous gas hazard is accentuated because of the relatively small openings where metal-mine blasting is done and to the inefficient ventilation of the usual metal mine.

THE stabilization of a gravel road with soil is a method of treatment developed in recent years by the United States Bureau of Public Roads for the purpose of binding the constituents together better, and maintain-ing a more durable surface. The process consists in adding to the gravel or crushed stone and sand, a soil mortar, so-called, of fine sand, silt and clay, mixed in the proper proportions. The coarse gravel and sand supply structural strength and hardness; the fine sand adds embedment support to the coarse sand; the silt acts as a filler to prevent the granular particles from rocking; while the clay serves not only as a binder but also provides pores minute enough to cause connecting moisture films which are supposed to have high cohesive properties1. It will be recognized that the clay is an important ingredient both when wet and dry, and should not show excessive expansion when wet, nor correspondingly high shrinkage in drying, as otherwise there is danger of unseating the nonplastic particles. Such a stabilized road, although an improvement on one with a floating surface, will in course of time be subject to wear, and become dusty when the clay dries out and breaks up. It has been found that if some salts are added to the road mixture they tend to maintain the soil moisture and prevent dustiness of the road or raveling of the road surface. In addition to this, it is claimed that these dissolved salts cause a thinning of the moisture films on the particles, thus permitting greater compaction of the road mixture, and thereby increasing its density. This fact can be proved by noting the increased compaction which a road mixture shows when certain salts are added to the soil water. Since certain chemical substances such as sodium chloride are electro-lytes, the question arises whether they cannot have some effect on. the qualities of the clay in the soil mortar, and perhaps improve them. In view of the fact that certain salts seem to exert a favorable effect on the road mixture it is desirable that they be held in the road soil as long a time as possible.

The purpose of this investigation was to prepare high-purity iron-carbon alloys, to determine as precisely as possible the A3(GOS), the Acm(SE), and the A1(PSK) transformation temperatures in the meta-stable iron-iron carbide system (up to 1.4 per cent C), and to study the influence of carefully controlled and constant rates of heating and cooling (1/8 to 2o C. per minute) upon the transformation temperature and upon the resulting microstructure. Apart from the general metallurgical importance attending the completion of such a task, it will be noted that highly precise transformation temperatures are of interest and importance in the thermodynamic study of this system1. Several determinations of the iron-iron carbide diagram have been made2. These suffer generally from the low purity of the alloys used, and from the application of methods of investigation of low sensitivity. Attempts to compare and weight the many data available in an effort to construct as accurate a diagram as possible have, in the main, been unsuccessful. In general, the wide differences in the results of different workers, the lack of complete analytical data, the omission of important details relating to the heat-treatment of the alloys, and the meager description of the methods of investigation applied, render such a process of averaging nearly meaningless. It may be seen from the summaries by Epstein2 and Körber and Oelsenl that variations as great as 30' C. exist in the reported data on the A3 temperatures in iron-carbon alloys. Fortunately, the Aa temperature in pure iron is now known to be 910" C. ± 1° C.3 The best recent work on iron-carbon alloys is that of Esser4 on hypoeutectoid steels and that of Sato5 on both hypoeutectoid and hyper-eutectoid steels. Esser made a dilatometric and magnetic study of iron and iron-carbon alloys containing 0.06 to 0.86 per cent C, for which a high purity is claimed. Presumably the electrolytic iron was reasonably pure, but the alloys contained considerable impurities, on the average totaling 0.35 per

The kinetics of the growth of sulfate layers on blocks of Cu20 has been studied between 688" and 800°C. At 788c the over-all weight increases followed the parabolic rate law, with k = 216 30 sq mg per cm4 min, using a 1:1 entering gas mixture of SO2:02. At 757 after an initial linear period the parabolic rate law was followed, with k = 57.8 10 sq mg per cm4 min. The gas mixture required a platinum catalyst to produce the maximum SOs pressure. The sulfation rate at 757' and 788c was high until all the CUZO had changed into a core of CuO, when it became very much lower. At 757°C marker experiments showed that the sulfates (CuO. CuS04 and CuSO4) grow outwards from the oxide surface, but CuO. CuS04 mixed with CuO was found beneath the markers. At 688 markers were found at the CuO. CuS04/CuS04 interface. Visual observations at 757 showed a liquid eutectic moving beneath the sulfate surface. causing very rapid sulfation and extruding to solidify as thick 'needles" up to 8 mm long. Marker experiments have shown conclusi.cely that CuO grows on Cu20 in air by the outward migration of copper. ThermODYNAMIC measurements on the sulfate and basic sulfate of copper, reported recently,' are followed here by measurements of the rates of formation of these sulfates on cuprous oxide, in order to provide a background for the understanding of roasting processes. peretti2 and McCabe and Morgan3 have shown that the phase Cu20 lies next to Cu2S when the sulfide is roasted under conditions where sulfates will be formed. Since this would present too complex a system for kinetic study, the present work4 has been based on the kinetics of sulfation of the oxide phase. The results of a study of the kinetics and mechanism of the sulfation of cobaltous oxide have recently been reported.4,5 Results on the sulfation of cuprous oxide have also appeared,6 but are at variance with those to be reported here. This seems to be because the previous workers6 did not obtain constant SO3 pressures from the SO2/O2 sulfating gas mixtures used, as will be discussed later. Wadsworth, Leiter, Porter, and Lewis found that the sulfates produced when SO2/O2 mixtures are passed over Cu20 at red heats are CuS04 and the basic sulfate CuO.CuSO4. When the decomposition of CuS04 was followed' by differential thermal analysis, a stage corresponding to CuO .CuS04 was reached before decomposition into the oxide occurred. APPARATUS The vertical furnace used for quantitative studies was a conventional resistance-heated and propor- tionately controlled furnace with an even zone (1 deg) which was 4 cm long. The gas mixtures of SO2 and 02 were made by mixing measured flows from capillary flowmeters and drying over phosphorous pentoxide before passing them into the Pyrex top-piece of the furnace assembly. A mullite tube of bore 2% cm was used as reaction vessel and at the bottom of this tube was a trap for SO3, which condensed as a colorless liquid. The residual gas was led into a fume cupboard for ventilation to the atmosphere. The furnace used for visual observations of needle growth and other phenomena consisted of a transparent silica reaction tube of bore 3 cm, having an optically flat silica window sealed into its wall. The reaction tube was clamped vertically, inside a mullite tube of bore 4 cm and length 42 cm which was heated by Kanthal windings. The window in the silica reaction tube was arranged opposite a hole 3 cm wide and 2 cm tall which had been cut in the wall of the mullite winding tube 19 cm from its top end. A binocular microscope was used to look through the window, illumination being provided by a focusing microscope-lamp offset sideways and downwards. The oxide block to be sulfated was suspended from the removable Pyrex top-piece to the reaction tube, by means of which it was inserted at the start of the experiment, and through which entered the S02/02 gas mixture. The variation of the temperature inside the reaction tube with horizontal and vertical displacement from the window was investigated, and, while it can be said that the temperature was constant 1 deg, its value at a given position was known only to 12 deg. In both furnaces, the oxide block to be sulfated was suspended from a small silica hook immediately downstream from a platinum thimble used as catalyst, which was held on a long silica rod from a Pyrex spring attached to the removable Pyrex top-piece of the furnace. The spring was only included in the quantitative sulfating furnace; its sensitivity was 1.4 cm per g and it was found to be free from creep in a 16-hr test when carrying the working load. The extensions were followed by a cathetometer which could be read to 0.001 cm, corresponding to i0.7 mg. Extensions of the spring were measured on adding weights between 5 and 500 mg to the working load (thimble + oxide block), and Hooke's law was closely obeyed. SAMPLES Cuprous oxide blocks were prepared by oxidizing Johnson Matthey "Specpure" copper sheet of 1 mm thickness (impurities: iron at 3 ppm, silver at 2 ppm, lead, nickel, sodium, and silicon each at 1 ppm, calcium, chromium, magnesium, and manganese each at less than 1 ppm) for 6 days in air at 1000°C in a re-crystallized alumina boat. THE Cartersville mining district, 35 miles northwest of Atlanta, Ga., has been of varying but continuous importance in the southern mineral industry during the past century. Noted chiefly for its production of brown iron ore, manganese oxide ores, barite, sienna, and magnesian limestone, the district and its environs have produced brick and tile clays, slate, gold, bauxite, and graphitic schist. Minor deposits of serpentine, sericite schist, copper ore, and red iron oxide have been prospected. The obvious deposits of brown iron ore, together with some associated specular hematite, were mined out years ago, although a little ore was left in the workings. Moderately steady production of sienna reached a peak about 1930, then declined rapidly. Manganese mining passed through a relatively active period from the World War to 1931, but has subsided to a small but rather constant output for the Birmingham market. How-ever, the White Manganese Corporation has prepared for possible increased production by constructing a new washer capable of handling about 300 tons of ore per day. Principal activity in the district proper has centered for some years in the production of barite and magne-sian limestone.

A formulation is given for radiant heat loss from the surface of molten steel held in a ladle and numerical solutions are presented for the resultant integrodif-ferential equations. The results are shown on plots of the net rate of heat loss against time, with the geometlry, emissivities, thermal properties of the walls, and Preheat as parameters. It was found that the rate of the vadiant heat loss from the exposed metal surface was comparable to the conductive losses from the Portion of the metal in direct contact with the walls. The radiant heat loss was markedly affected by the geometry and by the thermal properties of the walls the net radiant heat loss from the steel could be drastically reduced by providing a top cover and also by the provision of preheat. The results of this work are thought to be relevant to heat loss calculatious concerned with vacuum degassing and with operatzons in which molten metals are held in ladles. WhEN molten steel is held or transferred in ladles heat losses inevitably occur. The accurate assessment of these heat losses is of importance in process design considerations, as the temperature of the metal may have to meet rigid specifications in certain stages of the processing sequence. As shown in Fig. 1, the principal mechanisms responsible for heat loss are: i) Conduction into the walls and ii) Thermal radation from the top metal surface (possibly augmented by natural convection) The conductive heat loss may be readily calculated as much information is available in the literature on both the general theory1'' and on its particular applications to ladle heat loss calculations. Evaluation of the radiant component of the heat loss is less straight-forward. In two recent papers it has been shown that the presence of a slag layer 2 to 3 in. thick would prevent any significant heat loss for periods up to an hour,5'" however, should bare metal be exposed, constituting the radiant surface, substantial heat losses could occur. This latter case is of considerable practical interest in various degassing operations and in the vacuum processing of certain specialty steels, where the top surface of the metal is not covered by a protective slag layer. Under these conditions a substantial radiant flux is emitted by the top metal surface; part of this flux leaves the system, part of it falls in the ladle walls. The radiant flux incident on the ladle walls is in part absorbed and conducted away, and in part reflected and re radiated. The purpose of the paper is to present a general formulation of the problem, the resultant solution of which should enable computation of the net radiant heat loss from the metal surface. The principal variables, the effect of which will be investigated, include initial metal temperature, geometry, thermal and radiative properties of the wall, and various modes of preheat. FORMULATION Consider a cylindrical enclosure, shown in Fig. 2, with a diameter D, height H, and wall thickness W, the cover at the top of the cylinder having a wall thickness L. If the temperature of the base (representing the top surface of the metal) is kept constant, say, Tb, the problem is to calculate the net rate of heat loss from the base as a function of time, geometry, the initial temperature distribution, and the thermal properties of the system. As customary, the formulation will consist of the mathematical statement of the conservation of thermal energy within the system.

IN 1947 the steel industry rebounded from its wartime effort and produced a record-breaking peacetime tonnage of steel ingots. During the first six months of the year the industry produced 42,000,000 tons of ingots and expected to produce 85,000,000 tons for the year. With a rated capacity of some 91,000,000 tons, production was at a rate of about 93 per cent of capacity. Credit must be extended to the steel producers who have maintained this steady state of operations while faced with many problems, not the least of which was a continued shortage of satisfactory scrap. Furthermore, the steel industry started a record-breaking peacetime expansion program at a total cost of more than $1,000,000,000. This program will increase the ingot-making capacity of the country by 2,500,000 tons and should be completed in 1948.

Australian rutile was chlorinated in the presence of CO or carbon. The chlorination velocity in CO was found to be strongly influenced by temperature and proportional to the CO concentration, but independent of the Cl, concentration. In the presence of carbon, the reaction velocity is much higher. The reactivity of the carbon and the distance between the carbon and the rutile surfaces are important variables. The reaction velocity is approximately proportional to the Cl, concentration and independent of the CO concentration of the surrounding atmosphere. Experiments with fluidized-bed chlorination of carbon-rutile mixtures indicate that the motion of the bed has little influence on the reaction velocity. At low temperatures, the chlorination velocity of dense tablets is much greater than that of TiO, coke mixtures suitable for fluidization. The reaction mechanism is discussed. In the industrial production of TiCl, rutile is chlorinated in the presence of carbon. Disregarding intermediate steps, the reaction may be expressed by the following equations: The ultimate object of this study was to find out whether the reaction velocity was higher in fluidized bed operation compared with chlorination of pelle-tized carbon-rutile mixtures. From a literature survey and preliminary experiments it was learned that some basic knowledge about the reaction mechanism was needed for a good experimental design. Therefore the following sets of experiments were carried out: 1) Studies on the reaction velocity in the chlorination of rutile with CO as the only reducing agent. 2) Chlorination of separate rutile-carbon tablets. 3) Chlorination of rutile-carbon tablets at different temperatures with various kinds of carbon, various grain sizes, and various tablet-making techniques. This series of experiments was carried out not only with pure chlorine but also with mixtures of chlorine with argon, CO and CO,. 4) Chlorination of rutile-carbon tablets made in a strictly standardized manner. 5) Chlorination of static-bed rutile-carbon mixtures. 6) Fluidized-bed chlorination of the same mixture. The experiments 4 to 6 formed the final and direct test of the main question: Static bed vs fluidized bedo. Although there are many patents and papers dealing with the general aspects of chlorination, only few experiments from which detailed information can be obtained have been reported in the literature. Pamfilov and coworkersl3 have studied chlorination of TiO, with CO or carbon as the reducing agent. They found that the weight decrease per hour at 600o to 800°C amounted to 11 to 14 pct with CO and 45 to 51 pct with carbon. They suggest that phosgene might be an intermediate in the chlorination of TiO,. Takimoto and Hattori have chlorinated reduced titanium oxide (TiO) and found a very high rate of TiC1, -production. They proved that the composition of the gas from the chlorination of rutile-carbon mixtures contained mainly CO. They reported for instance 74.7 pct CO, and 5.6 pct CO at 800°C at which temperature the Boudouard equilibrium composition is 12 pct CO and 88 pct CO. Seligman and Segerchano6 have studied the chlorination of TiO. They proved that Ti0 and chlorine react rather rapidly at temperatures as low as 300°C. Above 400°C, the reaction was complete. At 500°C the velocity of this reaction was much higher than was chlorination of TiO, + C. McTaggart,7 Nishimura, et al. and Wilskam have chlorinated mixtures of carbon and various kinds of rutile or beneficated ilmenite. Nishimura, et al. also report the results from reduction of TiO, with H2, CO, or carbon. At 900°C only 1 pct Ti O is formed in 2 hrs. At 1100°C 23.1 pct Ti, 0, was formed if elementary carbon was present. No carbide formation occurred below 1400°C. McIntosh and Cofferll have observed that the CO, content of the exit gases from chlorination of rutile and calcined petroleum coke is appreciably higher than found in the Boudouard equilibrium. At 900°C the ratio (CO, /CO + CO) is about 80 pct, whereas the equilibrium value is about 2 pct. W. E. Dunn12 has studied the chlorination rates of several TiO,-bearing minerals with CO + Cl, or COCl . Chlorinations were carried out either in a fluidized reactor or a fixed-bed reactor, both having a 30-mm diameter. The results obtained in both reactors were comparable. It was proved that benefi-ciated ilmenite (i.e., ilmenite from which the iron oxide had been removed by chlorination) was chlorinated 10 times faster thanrutile. These mines, which belong to the Burma Corporation, Ltd., formerly a London company now incorporated in Rangoon, Burma, are situated in the semi-independent state of Tawng-Peng, one of the small divisions comprising the northern Shan states and erroneously known as part of Upper Burma. Bawdwin is approximately 23' 6' N. latitude and 97" 20' E. longitude, 450 miles north of Rangoon, 169 miles northcast of Mandalay and 50 miles south and west of the Province of Yunnan, China (see Fig. 1). Although the mines were worked by the Chinese during the Ming Dynasty, 1412 A. D., the most extensive operations took place between 1796 and 1851, when the mines contributed largely to the silver market of China. During the reign of Tung Chik, 1868 A. D., they were abandoned partly because of the Mohammedan rebellion in Yunnan, which made life and property insecure, but largely because of the difficulty of operating the mines on account of water and poor ventilation. Since that time practically nothing was done, although the Burmese kings are said to have made several sporadic attempts to work the mines, until 1891 when Europeans were attracted by the great slag dumps (assaying about 40 per cent. lead) which the Chinese had left after extracting the silver. After a railroad and smelter had been built and 200,000 to 300,000 tons of slag smelted for lead, exploration work was started and old workings cleaned out in order to locate the remnants of the orebody that it was supposed the Chinese had left. After two years of most discouraging work, the remains of a large orebody was discovered by the Dead Chinaman Tunnel or what is the 171-ft., or No. 2 level adit. ENROLLMENT of both undergraduate and graduate mineral engineering students rose approximately 11.8 pct over last year to a total of 12,830. Leading again in the enrollment climb was ceramic engineering which increased by about 21 pct. Approximated increases in enrollment of the other mineral engineering categories, in order, were: metallurgical 17.7 pct; petroleum 13.3 pct; geological and geophysical 3.3 pct: and mining proper, the lowest with 2.9 pct. Total ECPD school enrollment climbed to 242,405 -just below the 1947 peak, but 14.4 pct higher than 1955. Engineering enrollments have shown a general increase since 1951, and freshmen enrollments have climbed steadily since 1950.

A diaphragm diffusion cell suitable for use with liquid metals was designed and tested by measuring the diffusion coefficients for a Hg-10 pct In alloy at 25°C. The binary diffusion coefficient and the coefficients for In and Hg tracers were measured at this composition. The measured coefficients for both tracers were less than the binary diffusion coefficient. When these coefficients were combined with the activity correction term of Darken, the predicted binary coefficient was somewhat higher than the experimental value. In recent years a number of investigators have been studying diffusion of liquid metals in order to gain a better understanding of the liquid state and to examine possible applications to liquid metal processing. The bulk of this work has involved either self-diffusion or diffusion of low concentrations of solute metals in an essentially pure solvent metal. The most common experimental technique employed has been the capillary-reservoir method of Anderson and saddington1 since it is well-suited to measurements involving low concentrations of solutes. As an expansion of previous studies, an investigation of the variation of diffusion coefficient over large composition ranges has been undertaken in this laboratory. Although it is possible to modify the capillary-reservoir method for such measurements, the technique loses its principal advantage of requiring only small quantities of solutes. Therefore, it was felt desirable to investigate other possible experimental techniques applicable to measurements over large composition ranges. A technique which has been used widely in measurements of other liquid systems and seemed potentially applicable to studies of liquid metals was the diaphragm cell. This method has been found to combine relative simplicity of operation with accurate and reproducible results. In use with normal liquids, the tyiical diaphragm cell utilizes a porous glass disk. However, because of the high surface tension, it is not possible to use a diaphragm of such fine pore structure with liquid metals. Furthermore. projected use at high temperatures makes the use of glass undesirable. Consequently, the first problem was the search for an appropriate cell design. EXPERLMENTAL Diaphragm Cell. A number of possible cell designs were examined. Prototypes of several were constructed and tested. The final design is shown in an exploded view in Fig. 1. The cell consists of two identical chambers, one on either side of a 0.20-in.-thick partition. The chambers are 0.15 in. deep and have a volume of 3.45 cu cm. Each chamber is provided with two small threaded holes for filling and emptying. The filling holes may be sealed with stainless-steel screws. Drilled lengthwise through the center partition is a 0.250-in.-diam hole. Inserted into this hole is a rod having seven 0.059-in.-diam holes drilled radially through it. The total "hole" volume is 0.078 cu cm. When the rod is properly aligned, the holes in it constitute the "diaphragm" through which diffusion occurs. The center section was of Teflon and the rod and face plates were of Plexiglas. Four such cells were constructed and used in this study. Subsequent to this investigation, a similar cell constructed entirely of iron was fabricated and tested at higher temperatures. Several considerations led to this final design. It is desirable to minimize the volume of the cell chambers to decrease the time required for a measurement. However, the total volume of metal in the diaphragm must be small in comparison with that in the chambers. To facilitate filling and emptying it is desirable to have a diaphragm which may be closed.

TIN is not yet classed as a rare metal, but it has taken a long stride in that direction in the last ten months. It is now in Group 1 of the War Production Board's critical list, along with such company as magnesium aluminum, and nickel. This is in sharp contrast with the position a year ago when the supply well exceeded demand, and tin was used when feasible in place of really scarce metals. The geographical sources of tin production in recent years are shown in Table 1. Preponderance of former production in southeastern Asia, particularly Malaya and the Netherlands Indies (but all now controlled by the Japanese). is entirely too marked to be funny. Of the 1940 known world production of 237,000 long tons nearly all was controlled by the United States, Great Britain, and their friends. Now their supply is from countries that produced only 28 per cent of that amount. This excludes China and Australia, which because of shipping difficulties and local consumption, cannot be expected to export much tin. In spite of some expected increase in production, therefore, the supply is, and will continue to stay for at least several years, way below that desired for even normal uses. A wire-feed mechanism has been employed to fabricute metal alloy film resistors to various sheet resistivities on oxidized silicon substrates. The effect of several thousand hours storage in air at elevated temperatures on the resistance and temperature coefficient of resistance is presented. Unprotected films of- sheet resistivity between 100 and 500 ohms per sq fabricated at 300°C substrate tenzperatures were unstable when stored at 150°Cfor extended periods. The higher sheet resistivity films exhibited the greatest instability; however, even the 100 ohms per sq films drijted excessively for device application. When stored at still higher temperatures, the normalized resistance increases to maximum, then decreases until a minimum value is obtained, then finally increases in resistance until open. The use of a protective overcoating of SiO has had considerable benejicial effects on the film stability, so that 250 ohms per sq films deposited on 300°C substrates are now stable after 1000 hr storage at 250°C and possess a temperature coefficient of resistance less than 200 ppm per C. The use of a low substrate temperature during depositon (100°C) enables the preparation oj resistors with very low tenperature coefficients of resistance (10 to 20 ppnl per 'C). However, these films are less stable than their higher substrate temperatuve counterparts. During extended storage, the resistance of the protected films always decreases with lower substrate films exhibiting larger normalized resistance decreases. This resistance decrease is accompanied by a linearly related increase in the temperature coefficient of resistance. The electrical behavior of these films may be explained by postulating That the structure of the films is in the transition region between thick continuous films and ultrathin island structure films so that the conductivity is the restlt of both electron scattering and tunneling-activated charge carrier creation between neighboring grains. The annealing behavior when thermally aged is the result of defect anneal, grain growth, and selective oxidation. TheRE is a considerable interest in thin metallic films for use as resistor elements in microelectronic circuits.1,2 These resistor films must be stable when exposed to elevated-temperature storage or operating ambient, possess low temperature coefficients of resistance (hereafter referred to as T.C.R.), and be of a high enough sheet resistivity to be useful. The resistivity and T.C.R. of a thin metallic film are determined by the structure and thickness of the film. Hence the stability of the film when exposed to stress would depend on the stability of the structure. The resistivity of a thin film is the result of the electrons' interaction with the lattice vibrations (electron-phonon scattering), scattering of electrons due to impurities, defects, and grain boundaries and specula reflection from the film surfaces.3' All of these effects serve to reduce the electron mean free path and result in a resistivity higher than the ideal bulk. In ultrathin films possessing essentially an island structure consisting of a planar array of aggregates separated by a few to a few tens of angstroms, conduction is dominated by a combination of tunneling and activated charge carrier reation. Thin films would be characterized by relatively low resistivity, positive T.C.R., and reasonable structure stability whereas ultrathin films possess unstable structures, negative T.C.R., and exhibit high resistivity. Feldman6 has investigated films intermediate between the two regions and postulates that the resistivity of a film in the transition region is composed of two linearly additive parts: that due to the resistance of the grains and that due to the gaps. The grain resistivity would represent the scattering of the conduction electrons by defects, surfaces, and phonon interaction while the gap term represents the tunneling contribution. For gold and platinum films, he found as the film structure becomes progressively less continuous, corresponding to thinner films, the absolute value of the T.C.R. becomes progressively smaller until negative values are observed with respective zero T.C.R.'s at about 35 and 150 ohm per sq, respectively. Recently the author7 investigated the behavior of a multicomponent alloy of nickel, chromium, and iron and found the T.C.R.'s of these films decrease with decreasing substrate temperature during deposition. The lower T.C.A. associated with lower substrate temperatures was attributed to an increased contribution to the total resistivity from the negatively temperature-dependent gap tunneling since it is well-known that thin films deposited on low-temperature substrates consist of a higher density of smaller grains than the same sheet resistivity films deposited on higher-temperature substrates. Under conditions of thermal anneal, the author found that, when various sheet resistivity films fabricated at 300°C substrate temperature are exposed to extended storage in air at 300°C, the thinner films increase in resistance until open, while the thicker films

Recrystallization of aluminum single crystals after plastic extension is carefully studied in relation to the structure of the deformed matrix. The shapes of the new grains are analyzed with regard to slip planes and to the presence or absence of deformation bands. A mechanism by which the orientations of the grains are related to the parent lattice is described. EXPERIMENTS previously reported&apos; have been extended to develop some of the characteristics of the new crystals which are formed on annealing axially strained crystals whose deformational characteristics had been documented with special care. Thus, the presence of deformation bands affects the growth contours of the crystals, some of the strained crystals produced single crystals anew, and some, polycrystals, on annealing, while others merely "recovered" or "polygonalized" after the 600°C annealing treatment generally adopted in these tests. In the matter of orientational relationships between new crystals and the strained matrix, the present experiments have added little to previous experience, which had demonstrated great variety in the range of orientations encountered and no simple theory or correlation. For example, there has been ample evidence for the predominance in various face-centered cubic metals of a favored orientational relationship; viz., a rotation of 30° to 40° around a <1ll> axis, between grains growing in a matrix with a strong single orientation texture and the matrix itself.&apos;-&apos; This reorientation has been interpreted by various investigators in support of both the "oriented nucleation" and the "oriented growth" hypothesis. In the case of axially extended single crystals of aluminum, no general relationship, such as the one stated above, can be used to correlate the orientations of the recrystallized grains with that of the original crystal. Thus, Carpenter and Elama and Burgers and Basart7 were content to assume that the orientational relationships so developed were random in nature. Mathewson, however, in the Campbell Lecture of 1943 "rgued on the basis of <112> slip that a complex strain, chiefly characterized by rotation around a variable axis in the slip plane combined with a principal rotation around the pole of the slip plane, could be responsible for such devious relationships. Nevertheless, owing to the limited data now available dealing with orientational relationships between new grains and the single crystals strained in tension from which they have recrystallized, no adequate examination of the above generalization could be made. Here, there is the disturbing preliminary condition that any desired orientational relationship may be expressed by means of two rotations about mutually perpendicular axes, so the process lacks a certain critical flavor and any successful choice of axes meeting certain theoretical requirements could be replaced by another differently selected pair. With this reservation clearly in mind the process of double rotations, as previously indicated, was used to relate the orientations of the single crystals which grew out of the strained single crystalline matrix and was construed as certain evidence in favor of the theory of incongruent shearing action proposed by Mathewsons as a necessary element in the (111) slip process with close-packed metals. Although the Western bentonite industry has grown rapidly, it is facing major challenges to sustained growth. The fundamental penalty of costly overland transportation to both domestic markets and to US seaports is of increasing importance; as both substitute materials and foreign bentonites present more formidable competition in the historic market areas of drilling muds, foundry sands, and iron ore pelletizing; and as foreign demand grows more rapidly than domestic demand. The Western bentonite industry is facing these challenges by altering its transportation patterns, by upgrading of products, and by emphasizing customer service and stringent quality control.

By now most readers of this column are aware that it no longer has a regular editor. Tom Murphy, who did the job so well, has had to bow out because of his duties in Australia---duties that keep him from the luxuries of such things as typists and typewriters for rather extended periods of time. We will miss his regular contributions but hope and expect to hear from him as a guest columnist from time to time. Finding an editor to function on a regular basis turns out to be no simple task. This does not mean that there may not be candidates around who would secretly enjoy having their arm twisted into a "yes" position, but at the moment none has been found. Anyway, at the Salt Lake City business meeting it was agreed that we should try to spread the load around. To that end, the Regional Vice Chairmen were specifically singled out as one potential source of contributions. These fellows should have an opportunity for a hearing during their term in office. The existing organizational set-up of the IndMD Division may be a little unfair to this group of officers. The limited responsibility outlined in our Manual of Official Duties and Responsibilities does not offer them much chance for self-expression. Probably the by-laws were written so as to have a geographic representation of membership in case it should be needed at some time. But that is another subject. The point is that now these regional officers have an opportunity to speak out on topics of their own choosing through this column. Some have already done just that. There are also other potential contributors to the column. One is the Secretary, who twice a year uses the column for distributing the minutes of our business meeting to the members. Another is the outgoing Division Chairman. In Salt Lake City, it was decided that this officer should be challenged to contribute something each year as a means of reviewing events of the past year or explaining what should have happened but didn&apos;t. I am, therefore, trying to accept that challenge.
