Granduc lies near the Alaskan border in British Columbia, about 600 miles (960 km) north of Vancouver. Prospecting in the area must take place in the short summer months of fog and rain because the winter is bitter cold, with snowfall up to 960 inches (24.4 m) accompanied by avalanches. Despite these difficulties, the mineral ized area was discovered in the 1920's. By 1956, Newmont Mining Corporation had developed mineable ore reserves estimated at 32,500,000 tons of 1.93% copper. Newmont and ASARCO, in a joint venture, then began development of the ore body, which was partially covered by glaciers. It was apparent a concentrator could not be built at the mine site where overland access was impossible due to the weather conditions and the terrain. Years of engineering studies of all possible access routes finally dictated the driving of an 11 mi long (17.6 km) tunnel passing under three glaciers and three mountain ranges to the nearest feasible concentrator site at Tide Lake. Even then, a mountain road subject to an average snowfall of 800 in. (20. 3 m) had to be built 32 mi (51 krn) from the concentrator through Alaska to Stewart, British Columbia, the nearest port. At Stewart, which is located at the head of a fjord 120 mi (192 krn) from the Pacific Odean, a fully equipped marine terminal was built. The tunnel, the lifeline between mine and mill, was to be driven from both ends; however, in 1965, an avalanche occurred at the Leduc portal, killing 26 crew members and wrecking much of the camp. The tunnel was then driven from one heading adjacent to the concentrator site at Tide Lake, a distance of 53,744 ft (16,381 m) to a point under the ore body. The remote location, type of terrain, and bad weather made supply of crews, equipment, and construction materials difficult; but in spite of these extremely adverse conditions, the tunnel crews set many world records. Mineralization throughout the ore zone is generally uniform in grade and composition and is primarily chalcopyrite and pyrrhotite associated with pyrite. Mining is mainly by sublevel caving. After blasting, rubber-tired load-and-haul equipment moves from level to level by means of an internal connecting ramp system on a 15% slope. At the gathering haulage level, 15-ton bottom-dump cars deliver the ore to a 600-ton pocket equipped with a Hudson "Rock-Flo" dump. The bottom of the ore pocket forms the feed chute to the primary

The study of brittle fracture of rocks has been a much neglected subject until quite recently and now is in a state of transition and rapid development. Historically, three methods of testing were used by engineers: uniaxial tension, bending, and, by far the most common, uniaxial compression of cubes. This latter was probably adequate for engineering requirements, but from the last century onwards there has been a demand from geologists for a study of the properties of materials under conditions comparable with those at depth in the earth's crust. King1 remarked that "in engineering practice a cube of the material is put into a testing machine and the stress required to crush the cube is measured. This gives the limiting stress difference for the material so long as the boundary conditions are similar to those existing during the test . . . this may by no means be the case when the boundary conditions are very different from those existing in the test, for instance, in the case of rupture in the neighbourhood of a cavity. . . ." Despite this very clear statement of principle, many writers until recently (e.g. Jeffreys2 used the uniaxial compressive strength as a measure of the 'strength' of rock. In the last century (Becker 3, it was both conjectured and, for some rocks, known qualitatively, that plastic deformation could occur under confining pres- sure; the demand from geologists has been for the study of flow rather than fracture of rocks.. From the time of von Karman (1911) and Böker5 (1915) onwards, apparatus has been built which could provide confining pressures sufficient to make some rocks plastic. Many experiments tended to be made on rocks such as marble, which readily become plastic, and the general tendency was to make relatively few experiments in the brittle range. MY FIRST paper dealing with the theories of the hardening of steel by rapid cooling was published in the Transactions of this Institute in 1896-30 years ago-under the title "The Microstructure of Steel and the Current Theories of Hardening;" hence, also, the title of the present paper. It was extensively discussed and was, I believe, one of the starting points of many subsequent papers and discussions of the same subject, discusssions which at times became almost violent and which led to the formation of different schools such as the "Carbonists" and the "Allotropists." Some of the older members of the Institute, who took part in the debate or who were interested observers, will, I am sure, have kept a vivid remembrance of it. The controversy gradually quieted down, apparently for lack of ammunition, without any side acknowledging defeat. Recently, however, interest in it has been revived through the claims of some that these vexed questions had at last been solved. In an effort to ascertain if possible the prevailing view of those best qualified to express an opinion a questionnaire was submitted to the following gentlemen: J. 0. During July and August, 1899, the writer took advantage of an opportunity of going to Shansi to gather some information concerning the geology and value of the already famous coalfields of that province. The long journey, mainly on slow river-boats, and the limited time at command, allowed only about ten days of work to be done in the coal-fields around Tsê Chou. The geologic structure and the rock-formations were found to be simple and quite regular, so that in that time the accompanying sketch-map (Pig. 1) was made, and a fairly good idea of the distribution of the coal and general geologic features was obtained. The map was made by measuring a base-line about three-quarters of a mile long, triangulating for principal points over the field, and filling in the details by rapid sketches. The few elevations marked on the map were taken with an aneroid barometer. Only a few of the great number of towns and villages that are within this densely populated area are shown; and the coal-mines indicated are not the only ones within the area, but the ones where most of the following information about the coal was obtained. The value of this coal-field was first clearly set before the scientific and commercial world by Baron von Richthofen,* who made a geologic reconnaissance of Shansi in 1870. Since that time the hostile attitude of the Chinese government and people towards foreigners and their enterprises has kept the coal-fields from being developed. But the last few years of rapid change in the conditions of China have at last apparently opened a way for the exploitation of this coal-field. EXCEPTING the joint sessions on gases in metals held during the day on Tuesday, the Institute of .Metals opened its activities with a division dinner at the Commodore on Tuesday evening, with Sam Tour, retiring chairman, presiding. W. M. Corse, secretary-treasurer, outlined the financial status of the division and stated the investment fund is becoming large enough so that in the near future it will be possible to pay all expenses of a foreign lecturer once in two years and not rely on an extended speaking tour to cover expenses. W. B. Price reported on his attendance at the Zurich, Switzerland, meeting of the International Society of Testing Materials and gave a graphic account of his visit to the Grand Salon, his meeting with Mussolini, and his audience with the Pope. Buffalo was announced as the place of the fall meeting, to be held during the week of Oct. 3.

Metal mining in the People's Republic of China has shown great growth during the last three decades. Over 150 new iron ore mines and nonferrous base metal mines have been opened since 1949, althouc.11 most of them of medium and small size. Concurrently, many old mines were enlarged and reconstructed. The production of iron ore has grown from less than 1.5 million tons per year in 1949 to almost 76 million tons in 1978. A corresponding increase in the total annual output in the nonferrous metal mineral industry has also been noted. It is well known that the PRC is very rich in metal mineral resources. The reserves of tungsten, tin, antimony, molybdenum and iron ore are ranked in the top three in the world. Recently, some copper porphyry ore deposits were discovered in Jianxi and Anhui provinces. Some large nickel-copper sulfide deposits were discovered and have been developed in North- West China. Huge iron ore deposits have been found in Liaoning, Hebei and Szechwan provinces. However, the bulk of the iron ores are low grade. The growing metal mineral production has met basic domestic needs since 1949; it has also proven China's big resource potential. Mining methods have also undergone development in the past 30 years. About 80% of the annual output of iron ore comes from open pits, whereas about 58% of nonferrous metal ores come from underground mines. Blasthole open stoping, sublevel caving and induced block caving are widely used in Chinese underground metal mines (table 1). This paper summarizes in detail the planning for and application of these three bulk mining methods in the nonferrous and iron ore mines in China. CLASSIFICATION OF UNDERGROUND MINING METHODS The main principle of the classification of underground mining methods in PRC is ground support in the stoping cycles of the mining blocks or stopes. Table 2 lists this classification. It is essentially the same as that given in the SME Mining Engineering Handbook. Be- cause pillar removal is a secondary mining operation, using a variety of methods, they are not included in this classification. As is the case with most classifications in science and technology, there is no precise division between the classes of mining methods. Because of the rapid development of consolidated filling techniques in the past twenty years, some types of open stoping methods use fill in order to improve the ground conditions for the secondary recovery stage. Thus, these mining methods have features of both methods using no artificial support and those using artificial support. In this classification, this type of mining method is placed in the latter category. The shrinkage stoping method has been employed extensively to mine steeply dipping narrow veins of tungsten and tin in the Jiangxi, Hunan, Guangdong and Guangxi provinces. Shrink- age stoping is placed under the class of mining methods without artificial support be- cause this reflects the nature of the Chinese experience. The function of the broken ore serving to support the footwall and/or hanging wall is limited, because the expectation is for the host rocks to remain unsupported until the stope is drawn empty. APPLICATION OF BULK MINING METHODS Bulk mining methods consist of blasthole open stoping, sublevel caving and block caving. These stoping methods have much in common, such as: bulk ore materials blasted by long holes; higher production rates of stopes or blocks and higher production efficiencies of the whole mining systems.

THE important advances that have been made of recent years in mining and milling methods and in mechanical equipment at mines need no re- telling, but there has been a remarkable growth in one type of equipment which has gone nearly unnoticed. That is the increasing use of storage-battery locomotives underground. Since the war the number of these locomotives and their field of use have increased tremendously; their growing acceptance represents an al- most complete reversal of opinion from an earlier period when they were generally looked upon as in- adequate for the strain of mine service. At the time when storage-battery powered units were first making their bid for recognition, the use of power in haulage had already passed through several phases; hand tramming, rope haulage, compressed air locomotives, even gasoline locomotives, had all been used, ending finally in the general adoption of the electric trolley locomotive for practically all power-haulage requirements. It was, and is, conceded that the trolley loco- motive met more adequately the varied and severe conditions of mine service than any previous type of haul- age unit. Subsequent developments have had to endure comparison and surpass in performance that type of haulage before changes would be considered.

Belting worth thousands of dollars can be ruined in a few minutes because of careless maintenance or lack of maintenance. Proper belt conveyor maintenance means having a clean conveyor system at all times. The belt line should be visually inspected during each shift. Equipped with proper maintenance instructions, one belt man can patrol a belt line of 2 to 3 km (1.5 to 2 miles). His duties would be to lubricate drives and idlers (except sealed-for- life type), maintain belt and conveyor frame alignment, detect sticking idlers, and maintain an unobstructed right-of-way.

Not content with terrestrial problems, they peer back along the cosmic ray into iaterstellar space, glimpsing forces that are, apparently, still busy with the task of atom-making. Mastering and organizing the material and physical, they advance steadily toward that borderland of science where the concept of matter itself seems abandoned, and force is the substance left.

POSSIBILITY of a greatly increased manganese production from domestic source; is indicated by news that the Bureau of Mines has been successful in producing concentrates with high manganese content from the low-grade deposit, in the Las Vegas, Nev.) area. The first unit of the comprehensive group of pilot plants built by the Bureau of Mines at Boulder City, Nev., under a defense appropriation has started operations, demonstrating definitely the applicability of a process developed in the Bureau laboratories. About 12 1/2 lb. of manganese is needed for the production of every ton of steel, and substitution is difficult. The United States produces only about 3 per cent of its total needs of this ore. Only high-grade ore, such as the Russian ore, containing 18 per cent or more manganese, is generally used by American producers in making ferro¬manganese the form in which manganese is usually added in steel manu-

Single bit-tooth penetration experiments under static load were conducted on six rocks at confining pressures of O to 5,000 psi using sharp wedge-shaped teeth with included angles ranging from 30 to 120° In general, the force-displacement curves for all rocks exhibit an increasingly nonlinear and discontinuous behavior with decreasing confining pressure. The confining pressure at which a rock exhibits a macroscopic transition from predominantly ductile to predominantly brittle behavior during penetration vmies from about 500 to 1,000 psi for the limestones to greater than 5,000 psi for dolomite. The correlation between calculated values of force per unit penetration based on plasticity theory and experimental values is quite encouraging, even at confining pressures as low as 1,000 psi A qualitative correlation between volume of fragmented rock per unit energy input for a single bit-tooth and drilling rate for microbits appears to exist over a confining pressure range of 0 to 5,000 psi. INTRODUCTION Laboratory experiments utilizing a small-scale drilling apparatus have demonstrated that penetration rates are reduced considerably as a result of increasing the confining pressure from atmospheric to a few thousand psi?-3 This undesirable situation can, in general, be attributed to a combination of decreased efficiency of chip removal at the bottom of the borehole, increased rock-failure strength, and a possible change in the mechanism of chip generation and rock fragmentation with increasing confining pressure. To more fully understand the principles underlying the last circumstance, it is the purpose of this investigation to experimentally study the mechanism of single bit-tooth penetration into dry rock at low confining pressures and, in particular, to establish the confining pressure at which the penetration mechanism may undergo a brittle to ductile transition for various rock types commonly encountered in drilling. Confining pressure as used here refers to the differential pressure between the borehole fluid pressure and the formation-pore fluid pressure. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE Using an experimental apparatus previously described: a single, sharp wedge-shaped tool was forced under a "statically" applied load into an effectively semi-in finite dry rock sample subjected to a prescribed confining pressure. To prevent the invasion of the con fining-pressure fluid into the pores of the rock sample during penetration, the exposed surface of the rock was jacketed with a layer of silicon putty.* Electrical instrumentation incorporated into the apparatus yielded a graphical plot of force on the tool as a function of penetration or displacement of the tool into the rock during an experiment. During the course of the experimentation the following conditions were maintained constant: (1) pore pressure — atmospheric (i.e., the rock was dry); (2) temperature — 75F; (3) rate of loading — essentially static (approximately 0.002 in./sec); (4) bit tooth — a sharp wedge-shaped tool loaded normal to the rock surface; (5) rock surface — smooth and flat; (6) drilling fluid — hydraulic oil; and (7) maximum depth of penetration — approximateiy 0.1 in. In addition, each experiment was performed on a different rock sample so the rock surface is free of a layer of cuttings and of any previous indentation craters. The influence of the corners of a borehole was neglected, since each rock sample was cemented inta a section of aLuminum tubing to simulate a semi-infinite body. Mineral raw materials, because they are essential to our industrial prosperity and military strength, must be made available in substantial quantities regardless of cost. Variations in the cost of procuring minerals, as compared with the cost of obtaining other commodities, and changes in the cost of production of different minerals relative to one another, will naturally influence the quantities of a given mineral item that can be marketed readily. However, in the last analysis, the cost of winning minerals from the ground usually constitutes only a small fraction of the value of the end-use products and services derived from them. The miner's share of the cost of a typewriter, telephone circuit, or even a modem office building, is almost insignificant. Far more important to the ultimate consumer, therefore, than any minor saving in cost is the assurance of ample supplies of the minerals needed to aliment our expanding economy. To create a successful metal mining operation involves (1 ) the discovery and systematic development of a mineral deposit, (2) extraction of the ore, (3) the mechanical and metallurgical processing to eliminate worthless or harmful impurities, and (4) the profitable disposal of the product. The fist step of the technological process belongs chiefly in the realm of the geologist, the second is a mining engineer's job, the third is mainly up to the millmen and extractive metallurgists; whereas the fourth and equally important step poses a commercial problem that has aspects in common with the marketing of other products. Ore finding is far from being an exact science. There is no mathematical criterion for evaluating the efficiency of prospecting and exploration. Lady Luck shares the honors or assumes part of the blame along with the prospector and geologist. Marketing like- wise involves factors that seemingly defy engineering analysis. Samples of chrysocolla, a hydrated copper silicate, from several sources were submitted to differential thermal analysis (DTA) and thermal gravimetric analysis (TGA). Pure samples of chrysocolla are difficult to obtain, but comparison of the thermograms revealed that certain reactions occurred in all the samples and it is believed that these are due to chrysocolla. Endothermic reactions occurred at 50' to 175°C, 350° to 650°C, and 980° to 1100°C each of which caused a weight loss. The first was due to loss of absorbed water, the second to a dehydroxyla-tion, and the last to conversion of cupric oxide to cuprous oxide. In addition, two exotherms were detected at 685° to 695°C and 935° to 950°C. Infrared spectra of heated samples indicated the exotherms were due to changes in the Si-O bonds leading to the formation of cristobalite. The results suggest that thermoanalysis may be a more sensitive and reliable method for detection and identification of chrysocolla than X-ray diffraction, infrared spectroscopy, or optical techniques. The recovery of copper from oxide ores has been the subject of much research in recent years. One of the principal oxide copper minerals is chrysocolla, a hydrated copper silicate. The information available indicates that it has widely varying properties depending on the origin of the sample. Chrysocolla usually is found associated with cuprite, malachite, azurite, and native copper. Most of these other minerals are recoverable by present day flotation practice, but chrysocolla is lost in the tailings.1,2 Reagent combinations that are successful in laboratory chrysocolla flotation with ore from one source have been found to be ineffective with another. 3 The copper segregation process offers an altemative to beneficiation of oxide copper ores.4'5 The process is of particular interest in processing ores that cannot be treated by conventional hydrometal-lurgical methods because of high acid consumption.6 Fuller understanding of the properties of chryso- colla may prove of value in the search for improvements in both the flotation and segregation processes. Chrysocolla samples from Arizona, Nevada, Chile, Australia, and South Africa were studied by differential thermal analysis (DTA) and thermal gravimetric analysis (TGA). In addition, a sample from Miami, Ariz., was submitted to X-ray diffraction, infrared spectrophotometry, and surface area determination. EQUlPMENT Differential thermal analysis (DTA) detects, amplifies, and records exothermic-endothermic reactions occurring in a sample as its temperature is raised at a constant rate, usually 10°C per minute. A unit made by the Robert L. Stone Co. was used in this study. The tests can be run if desired with a gas streaming through the sample. A thermobalance records weight losses or gains in a sample as its temperature is raised at a uniform rate. The gravimetric analyses (TGA) were run on a Chevenard thermobalance converted electronically for graphic recording. A heating rate of 5°C per minute up to 1100°C was used in these tests. A Perkin Elmer Infrared Spectrophotometer, Model 221, was used with sodium chloride optics obtaining IR spectra in the 2 to 15 region. A pressed pellet technique with potassium bromide was used in preparing the samples. DESCRIPTION OF SAMPLES Chrysocolla is found in the oxidation zones of copper deposits commonly associated with malachite, azurite, and limonite. It is described as varying in composition and in color from bluish green to brown or black. Inclusions of other minerals are usual so chemical analysis of chrysocolla samples may be suspect. However, it is considered by many to be a solid solution of CuO, SiO2 and H2O with a general formula of CuO.SiO2.2H2O or 2CuO.2SiO2. 3H20. Chukhrov7 has described a sample from the Urals as CU3,5(OH)2 (A1Si3) O10.nH2O and stated that chrysocolla is a montmorillonite-type mineral. On the basis of X-ray analyses, DTA, and infrared spectra of chrysocolla from the Inspiration Mine, Ariz., Sun8 concluded that there was no substantial evidence to classify it as a montmorillonite mineral. Chrysocolla samples from many sources throughout the world were used in this investigation. The following is a brief description of each:

CANANEA has long been recognized as a remarkable field for geologic study. The copper deposits and rocks of the district have been described by many geologists and engineers, but only the most general correlations have been made between Cananea sedimentary rocks and other known sedimentary sections in the southwestern United States and northern Mexico. The present paper describes the Cananea sediments in greater detail than has been done before and attempts to fit the Cananea sedimentary section more closely into the geologic time table. The lack of well-preserved fossils has made it difficult to date the sediments accurately in geo- logic time, but it is possible to make tentative correlations between the Cananea sediments and the southeastern Arizona sections, based largely upon lithology and general position in the geologic column. It appears that sedimentation at Cananea and Bisbee may have been closely similar during Paleozoic time. Even such generalized correlations, however, may be subject to considerable modification in the future. The present study has led to the recognition of other problems of age and mineralization relationships in the Cananea district. Cananea is located in the north-central part of the state of Sonora, Mexico, at an elevation of 5270 ft. It is about 135 miles northeast of Hermosillo, the state capital, and 25 miles south of the international boundary. By road Cananea is 40 miles from the twin towns of Naco, Ariz., and Naco, Sonora, and about 50 miles from Bisbee, Ariz. It is served by the Nogales-Naco branch of the railroad, F.C. Pacifico, and is connected with Chihuahua and Mexico City by the Aeronaves airline.

Tunneling methods through rock have, since the successful development of explosives, relied almost solely on blasting. Over the last ten years, rock-tunneling machines (moles) have been developed and some major projects have been carried out successfully with the use of such machines, which rely on the destruction of rock by mechanical means rather than blasting. Various other basically new methods are presently under study, such as the use of laser beams, water jets, etc. For practical purposes, there are presently only two methods commercially available: 1) blasting or 2) tunneling by mole. A contractor would choose at present either one method or the other. Both methods have their advantages and disadvantages (Fig. 1). The thought has occurred that the next practical development in rock- tunneling technology might be a combination of the best features of the mole technique and those of the blasting technique. A preliminary evaluation of this approach indicated that there is definitely a good potential for fruitful developments along these lines. My purpose is to place on record some of the thinking and some of the ideas which were developed along these lines and to point out certain areas where development efforts are required. In trying to find an improved tunneling technique, we looked in particular for the following qualities: 1) safety, 2) continuity, 3) uniformity, 4) automation, and 5) flexibility. TUNNELING BY BLASTING Conventional tunneling by means of blasting proceeds generally in recurring sequences of events: 1) drilling, 2) loading, 3) firing, 4) mucking-out, and supplementary operations (such as scaling and lining). These four operations (drilling, loading, firing, mucking) proceed one after another.

UINQUESTIONABLY the petroleum industry not only can supply the world's present oil requirements but even can meet a considerable increase in demand if it should come. The United States produced last year 1 1/3 billion barrels of crude oil, or more than 60 per cent of the world's total. It could have provided more, if needed, because we has a large shut-in crude producing capacity. Our refining capacity of 4,500,000 0 barrels per day is more than 2 per cent above our average refinery run for 1940. Adequate crude supplies and manufacturing facilities also exist outside of the United States. Large crude reserves exist in South America, in Iran and Iraq, in Russia and Romania, in Sumatra and adjacent islands. The refineries of the Dutch West Indies, of Iran, and of the Netherland East Indies are well located in relation to crude reserves and world trade lanes. Furthermore, flexibility in the manufacturing facilities permits adjustment of yields to meet a considerable range in variations between demands for products. Only with regard to 100-octane aviation gasoline is there any apparent refinery problem. Even here so far as this country is concerned, additional refining facilities can be installed well within the time that would be required to turn out the airplane engines which will use this super fuel.

Beginning with a joint session on engineering research and production engineering, Tuesday afternoon, conducted by E. A. Stephenson and H. C. Fowler, problems of petroleum technology, domestic and foreign production, proved oil re- serves, economics, and stabilization were mooied almost without interruption until nearly everyone was "talked out,' and the meeting was adjourned at the end of the annual Petroleum Division dinner, late Thursday night.

HAND picking was the earliest form of coal preparation, first practiced to improve the outward appearance of the coal being loaded and to remove any pieces that might appear objection- able to the buyer. It is still extensively practiced on the plus 1-in. sizes and particularly on the plus 4-in. and larger sizes. The percentage of ash reduction that can be obtained by hand picking depends entirely upon the amount of free impurity occurring in the coal. In a particularly dirty seam, where a considerable quantity of rock occurs with the coal as mined, hand picking produces sizable reductions in ash. If the coal is prepared clean at the working face hand picking is a final check; in some cases, on the smaller sizes, it is practiced only to show that an effort is being made to prepare a clean product. Because of the variety and different methods of handling coal, the early plants were not always adapted for efficient hand picking. At most mines an attempt is made to remove the visual impurities at one or more of the following places in the surface plant? (1) in the tipple during screening; (a) on picking band, belt, or shaking conveyors;*(3) during the loading of the coal as it goes into the railroad car. Whatever the physical arrangements of the plant may be, the usual practice is to run the coal over the screen, picking table or boom at such a rate that each piece of impurity is exposed to the view of the picker. Coal should be uniformly sized and spread out on the table so as not to exceed one particle in depth. The flow should be even in tonnage and the speed of travel should be from 30 to 60 ft. per minute and not exceed 80 ft. per minute. The dirtier the coal, the slower the speed required for a fixed number of pickers. Actually, picking capacity depends on the number of particles per minute that can be picked out and rejected. The percentage of impurity removed is determined by this and the average weight of piece rejected. Handling a mixture of sizes from nut to the largest lump over the same picking table or conveyor is not conducive to efficient separation by hand picking because the lump hides the smaller
