IN furtherance of the policy of acquainting those members of the Institute who live at a distance from New York with all the details of administration, the thirty delegates sent by the local sections and the technical divisions were invited to attend the meeting of the Directors on Tuesday evening as well as the Directors' dinner immediately preceding. Including the Directors and officers, new and old, the members of the Papers and Publications Committee and the section delegates, more than 70 sat down at the dinner table in the Engineers Club. The attendance at the business meeting that followed was not quite so large, doubtless for the reason that the ladies' fashion show, held in connection with the informal dance, offered attraction that eclipsed that of watching the wheels of Institute business go around.

AGAIN in 1945, the fourth year of World War 11, the American mining industry met the necessary demand made upon it for metals. Lack of labor prevented full production in some districts; maximum output, however, was maintained with the man power available. Development work and maintenance of mechanical equipment were neglected in favor of immediate production. Drafting of the younger men continued throughout the year, and the loss of personnel to war industries with higher wage rates continued up to "V-J" Day, Aug. 14. Labor shortages were more critical in 1945 than in 1944 though the man-power situation eased for some districts in the last quarter of the year. The trend in mining for the most part was to increase tons per man-shift by continued increased mechanization and refinements in methods and practices; larger equipment was installed where practicable. Labor shortages, together with the current higher wage rates, have advanced mechanization several years ahead of normal progress. The manpower shortage and the employment of inexperienced men had the effect of decreasing the average efficiency of the individual workman, but this condition was largely balanced by improved organization, greater efforts to improve labor relationship, and increased use of incentive pay systems. Safety instruction was emphasized, personnel contacts were increased, and more frequent foremen meetings were held to clarify contract agreements. Many of the large companies maintained schools to train green workmen.

CRUDE oil production in the United States during 1938 reached approximately 1,214,355,000 barrels, an average of 3,327,000 barrels per day, or 5 per cent below the 1937 record output of 1,279,160,000 barrels. The decreased production did not prevent the stocks of all products from increasing to a total of 575,954,000 barrels by Sept. 30, an increase of 10,957,000 above the total on Jan. 1, or an average daily storage increase in all products of 40,135 barrels. The increase in total stocks was made entirely in the refined products, stocks of crude oil during the first nine months of 1938 having actually declined 7,155,000 barrels to 299,671,000 barrels, or an average daily decline of 26,209 barrels. CHARLES H. FULTON, chairman, presided at the first session of the Mineral Industry Education Division on Wednesday morning. Reporting for the program committee, Edward Steidle, its chairman, pointed out that its function was not to arrange programs for meetings but to plan a program for the Division to follow in the development of its activities. This was appropriately followed by presentation and discussion of his paper, "Basic Trends in Mineral Industries Education," which, being available in printed form, was only presented in oral abstract. Jay A. Carpenter submitted interesting written discussion that was read, in his absence, by A. M. Smith. Most of the morning was devoted to the discussion of the paper, which was too extensive and ranged too widely to attempt to report in much detail. H. T. Mann, H. P. Hammond, Cadwallader Evans, C. H. Fulton, T. T. Read, D. F. McFarland and P. B. Bucky joined in the discussion, Mr. Hammond making a plea for more unification in mineral industry education, saying that in the study he made for the Society for Promotion of Engineering Education about 35 different curricula preparatory to work in the mineral industry were discovered to exist. He felt that most of the needs of the mining industry could he met by men who had had four years of engineering training of good enough basic quality to permit them to advance along special lines. However, there was apparently a growing demand, as reflected by the increasing number of candidates for the Master's degree in engineering, for men with more thorough training in the fundamentals.

The tensile behavior of copper foils prepared from rolled bulk material has been studied over the thickness range 2 to 53 , and for a range of pain sizes. For foils of comparable grain size, having the cube texture and tested along (100), yield strength increases with decreasing foil thickness t below -26p, with a corresponding decrease in ductility. Deformation occurs in the form of localized slip clusters distributed throughout the gage section. To the extent that the tensile strength (10 to 18 kg mm-) is unaffected by foil thickness, and that the foils possess fair ductility, the stress-strain behavior resembles that of bulk material rather than that of whiskers or evaporated films of comparable dimensions. The dependence of yield strength o on foil thickness t below -26p is of the form: oy = oo + kt-1/2. Possible explanations for the stress increase are considered based on 1) the dependence of active dislocation source length on foil dimensions, 2) the locking of surface sources, or the blocking of mobile sources at the surface due to surface film. It is now well-established that filamentary whiskers of many materials show exceptionally high strength compared with bulk crystals.'-11 As the diameter of the whiskers decreases to -1, the observed fracture strength approaches, and in certain cases exceeds, the calculated shear stress for the nucleation of slip in a perfect crystal.' In general, the stress-strain curve is entirely elastic, with strains at fracture approaching 1 pct. Similarly, thin films12-24 of evaporated or electrodeposi-ted material have been shown to possess tensile strengths three to seven times that of bulk material, with total strains at fracture -1 to 2 pct. In the present study, attention has been directed to the room-temperature tensile behavior of thin foils of copper over the thickness range 2 to 53, prepared from rolled bulk material. Yield stress, ultimate tensile strength, elongation to fracture, and work-hardening behavior are measured as a function of grain size and foil thickness. Structurally such foils are superior to either evaporated or electrodeposited films, and in the recrystallized condition exhibit considerable ductility. Apart from preliminary work by Sumino and Yamamoto25 on the work-hardening behavior of rolled and recrystallized copper foils, no systematic tensile studies have been carried out on material of this form. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE Tensile specimens were prepared from 99.995 pct purity rolled copper foils of thickness 2, 6, 12, 26, and 53, obtained from the Hamilton Watch Co., Lancaster, Pa. Irrespective of specimen shape, it is necessary to use tensile foils with edges free from notches or tears. To this end, any form of cutting operation was excluded, and the tensile foils prepared using a photoengraving process, the details of which are described elsewhere.26 Since tensile data are required under conditions of uni-axial stress, the specimen shape is extremely important. Ideally, the foil should be infinitely long, allowing a gradual taper from the grip area to the gage section; however, from a practical standpoint, long foils are easily damaged during testing. A modified tensile specimen was therefore selected having a parallel gage section 1.25 by 0.20 in. with a tapered shoulder section increasing to 0.5 in. at the grips, and an over-all length between grips of 4 in., Fig. 1. In practically all tests, these foils fractured within the parallel gage section. IN the Labrador iron fields two concessions, totaling nearly 24,000 square miles, have been staked out and commercial-grade deposits delineated. The Newfoundland-Labrador concession, owned by the Labrador Mining and Exploration Co. Ltd., is a 20,000-square-mile tract in the upper basins of the Hamilton and N askaupi Rivers which drain into Lake Melville. The New Quebec licensed area is 3900 square miles, owned by the Hollinger North Shore Exploration Co. Ltd., lying to the northwest of the northwestern part of the Labrador concession. It includes the upper basin of the Swampy Bay River and part of the upper basin of the Whale River, both of which drain into Ungava Bay. Both of the above-named companies are controlled by Hollinger Consolidated Gold Mines Ltd. with The M. A. Hanna Co., of Cleveland, holding a minority interest. When exploration was first undertaken in 1936, the only published map of the area was that prepared by A. P. Low in 1895. It showed only the main watercourses and gave only a rough, general idea of the geology. The numerous lakes of this vast area had to be first sketched and then mapped. Since then, extensive geological and topographical surveys have been conducted by the Labrador company, work which is normally done by Government branches. FUEL-OIL was first substituted for coal at these works in September, 1888. It was first applied in the converting-department to the battery of boilers, consisting of 14 tubular boilers, 16 feet in length by 5 feet in diameter. To operate these boilers with coal for 24 hours required 14 strikers, 3 ash-wheelers, 6 men unloading coal, and 2 water-tenders, making a total of 25 men. With fuel-oil the same boilers require for the same period 2 water-tenders and 4 men to attend to the burners, making a total of 6 men. This gives a saving of 19 men, which, at an average of $2 per day each, amounts to $38 per day. Comparing the consumption of oil with that of coal, we find that for the week ending January 5, 1889, with an ingot output of 6403 tons, 2731 barrels of fuel-oil were used as against a necessary consumption of coal for the same work of 848 tons, showing 3.22 barrels of fuel-oil to be equivalent to one ton of Indiana block-coal. Figuring oil at 60 cents per barrel, and coal at $2.15 per ton, we have as the cost of oil $1.93, as against $2.15 for its equivalent in coal. In December, 1888, the rail-mill battery of 26 boilers, of the same dimensions as those in the converting-department, was equipped for fuel-oil. For the week ending January 5, 1889, with a rail out-put of 5208 tons, 5987 barrels of oil were consumed, as against a necessary consumption of coal, to do the same work, of 1805 tons, showing 3.31 barrels of fuel-oil to be equivalent to one ton of Indiana block-coal, which at the costs named above would show $1.98 worth of fuel-oil to he equal to $2.15 worth of coal. The labor required to operate the rail-mill boilers for 24 hours, with coal as fuel,is: 26 stokers, 4 water-tenders, 6 ash-wheelers, 12 men unloading coal; total, 48 men. With oil as fuel, the same work requires 4 water-tenders and 6 men to attend to the burners; total, 10 men; a saving over coal of 38 men in 24 hours, which, at an average price of $2 per day, would be $76 per day. PROCESSES employing controlled atmospheres in the heat-treatment of metals and alloys are now well established on an industrial scale, and the general principles involved and the advantages to be gained in the use of the technique have received considerable publicity over a period of years. During this time the greatest emphasis has been on the establishment of the process in industry, the main effort being devoted to development work on various types of atmospheres, their useful fields of application and the design of suitable heat-treatment furnaces in which they are to be used. The various types of controlled atmospheres are fairly well standardized, but there still remains a considerable field for the investigation of related problems, in connection with both the gas-generating equipment and the surface chemistry of the heat-treatment of metals, especially in complex controlled atmospheres. This paper describes certain investigations of this nature that were carried out in England up to 1939. The development of processes employing controlled atmospheres has been associated to a very large extent with the heat-treatment of steels, both because of the major importance of steel in industry and the many diverse and difficult problems of surface chemistry involved when steels of such a wide range of composition are heated in the presence of active gases Controlled atmospheres such as dissociated and burnt ammonia or charcoal gas are used in the heat-treatment of low-carbon and high-carbon steels, but from certain points of view a suitable atmosphere generated by the partial combustion of city gas is to be preferred. Both the ammonia derivatives are comparatively expensive, and even if the burnt ammonia is regenerated, thereby reducing operating costs, the capital expenditure of the gas plant may make it prohibitive for the smaller type of furnace installation. Charcoal-gas generators are not without their operating difficulties: especially those associated with the quality of the charcoal, clinker formation and the removal of carbon dust from the generated gas. City gas has the advantage of being comparatively cheap and "on tap" in most if not all industrial centers. The use of raw city gas as a protective atmosphere in the heat-treatment of steels has been described,1 but it presents certain difficulties because of its complex composition and its explosive nature when mixed with air. These factors, together with the tendency toward sooting at elevated temperatures, arising mainly from the hydrocarbon gases present, all militate against its use as a protective atmosphere in industrial furnaces. IN 1880, the late James Douglas, LL.D., was superintendent of the Chemical Copper Co., operating the Hunt & Douglas process for the treatment of the siliceous copper ores of the Jones mine at Phoenixville, Pa. In conjunction with this a refining furnace was operated. After correspondence with Ben Williams, of Bisbee Ariz., who was commencing the mining and smelting of the Copper Queen ore. Dr. Douglas decided-to make his first journey to Arizona. While making plans for the trip lie visited a friend in Philadelphia, a .Mr. Logan, a prominent lawyer. He, through Professor Treadwell, brother of the discoverer of the great Treadwell gold mine of Douglas Island, Alaska, had an option with his min¬ing partner, Mr. Lenig, on the Eureka and Wade Hampton claims near the headwaters of the Verde River in Yavapai County, Arizona. These two claims, later the source of practically all of the wealth of the Jerome district, were then owned by C. P. Head and Co. Prescott merchants. Hugo Richards, banker, and formerly sutler at Camp Apache; Rod and John McKinnon prospectors and Nova Scotians; and perhaps one or two 'other owners of minor interests. Mr. Logan, hearing of Dr. Douglas intended trip to Bisbee, asked him to go first to see the two mining prospects, and this, Douglas, in need of the $500 fee, agreed to do as the time on the option on the claims was running short.

IN CONNECTION with a study of tungsten steels, Honda and Murakami1 reported an investigation of the system iron-tungsten. This report included a tentative equilibrium diagram, photomicrographs of various alloys in the series, and qualitative measurements of hardness and magnetic properties. The present investigation originally had as its object the study of the hardness and tensile properties of a series of carbon-free iron-tungsten alloys. But, as the work progressed it became evident that the system possessed other features of interest, so the scope of the investigation was enlarged. MATERIALS The iron powder used in preparing the alloys was obtained as follows: Iron oxalate was precipitated from a ferrous-sulfate solution by the addition of a solution of oxalic acid. This oxalate, after thorough washing, was ignited to iron oxide, which after reduction in hydrogen at about 1000° C. yielded iron powder containing but about 0.2 per cent. iron oxide and about 0.005 percent. carbon. Tungsten metal in the form of powder, such as is used in the manufacture of filaments for incandescent lamps, was the other constituent. This material analyzed 99.8 per cent. tungsten and contained no carbon, The metal powders, in the desired proportions, were mixed by tumbling and formed, under pressure of 20 tons per sq. in., into rods 3/8 by 3/8 by 10 in. To form the alloys without contamination, sections of the pressed rods were placed on alundum slabs and heated in an alundum tube wound with a tungsten resistor and packed in heat-insulating material. While the resistor was heated, a stream of hydrogen was continually passed through both the tube and the case containing it. The tungsten winding on the tube, as well as the material heated within the tube, was thus protected from oxidation. Such a furnace will operate constantly

OPERATION of a modern steel plant presents a curious anomaly. Large-scale operations, in which large volumes or heavy weights of materials are involved, are not usually subject to close control or narrow specifications. On the other hand, operations that call for a high degree of precision are usually carried out under carefully controlled conditions with delicate, precise machinery and tools, and production is made secondary to quality. In a modern steel mill both extremes are taken as a matter of course. A strip mill making auto-body sheets must supply its customers with sheets that all come within a tolerance of plus or minus 0.003 in. in gauge at any point from side to side or end to end, and without blemishes either of color or surface. Sheets that were considered par excellence as recently as ten years ago could not even find a market today. Such exacting requirements have made necessary a nicety of control that approaches the watchmaker's art. Notwithstanding this necessity for precision, the scale of operation is stupendous.

ABOUT one hundred were in attendance when Donald M. Liddell opened the session* on non-ferrous metallurgy at 2 p. m. on Tuesday. F. F. Col- cord was vice-chairman. For the first part of the session the chair was turned over to Frank G. Breyer, who introduced G. L. Spencer, Jr., to read his contribution (T.P. 378), "High Silica Retorts at the Rose Lake Smelter," which was an account of the method of manufacture of high-silica zinc retorts at the Rose Lake smelter, and of the service given by these retorts. The materials used are, by volume, 50 per cent clay, 25 per cent silica flour and 25 per cent grog. Written discussion of the paper by E. M. Johnson, W. R. In- galls and M. M. Neale was read by Mr. Breyer. Mr. Johnson explained that their practice in manufacture differed very little from Rose Lake practice, but that their retorts did not last as long, possibly because Eagle-Picher does not use a hydraulic retort press or sintered ore. He ascribes the longer life of silica re- torts to the fact that they do not bend under heat. Mr. Ingalls pointed out that silica retorts are no better as heat conductors than clay retorts, but that they do have a superior rigidity in the furnace. Reasons for this popularity include well-characterized microstructures which develop on a convenient scale with acceptable kinetics within a considerable temperature-composition region, the absence of great sensitivity to common impurities, and, especially. the availability of a unique wealth of the ancillary information indispensable for the quantitative interpretation of kinetic measurements, including phase diagram,3 crystallographies diffusivity,5 inter-facial energy,=17 elastiit," specific vlume, ''' and ativity'-' data. Development of considerable amounts of additional thermodynamic information from activity data is of particular importance with respect to kinetic studies, since much of this information is needed in temperature-composition regions not directly accessible to presently available techniques for the measurement of equilibrium properties. A generally useful approach to the thermodynamics of solid solutions, which is of especial value in this situation, is based upon the formulation of the free energy of such solutions as a function of temperature and composition. The free energy of solid solutions has been resolved into many components. Particularly in the case of interstitial solutions, with which we shall be concerned in the present study, however, only the positional entropy component has been intensively studied. The other components are conventionally taken into account by fitting equations for the activity of the interstitial species or the temperature-composition path of phase boundaries, derived principally from positional entropy considerations, to experimental information on these quantities through adjustment of one or more constants in the equations. A number of studies of the thermodynamics of interstitial solid solutions have been made primarily on this basis,'"25 but only Kaufman, Radcliffe, and cohenZ2 (hereafter KRC) and ener''% ave applied the results of such studies to develop relationships for the thermodynamic quantities of interest in the austenite —- proeutectoid ferrite transformation. KRC made use of a model developed by cheil'' (on the basis of a previous study by ohansson'), and subsequently rede-rived correctly by Speiser and retnak,' in which a carbon atom is considered to inhibit occupancy of a certain number of its nearest-neighboring interstitial sites. schei120 determined the number of sites in austenite thus excluded by matching calculated and experimentally measured curves for the variation of carbon activity with the mole fraction of carbon. zener17 used a different approach. He assumed that the positional entropy of carbon is ideal both in austenite and in ferrite (i.e., no excluded interstitial sites), and included all other contributions of carbon in a temperature-independent "free-energy change" accompanying the transfer of 1 mole of carbon between the two phases. This quantity was determined by "pinning" an equation derived for the boundaries of the a + y region to experimental data on the compositions of these boundaries at a single temperature. In the present investigation, three different approaches to the thermodynamics of the proeutectoid ferrite reaction are examined comparatively: I) the method of Zener; 2) the model employed by KRC and predecessors; and 3) the more detailed statistical thermodynamic treatment of the same model developed by acher and Fowler and uenheim, ' in which the problem of overlapping regions of influence of individual interstitial atoms is resolved. In order to make these comparisons, it is necessary to undertake an extension of one aspect of Zener's method; since the Lacher- Fowler -Guggenheim (LFG) treatment has not been previously used in the present context, the necessary thermodynamic "superstructure" for this treatment will be developed in parallel

It is with more than ordinary pleasure that I have complied with the request of the President of the Verein Deutscher Eisenh?tten leute, to read before this meeting and in this country a paper on a system of transport by wire ropeways which, during the past twenty years, has advanced with rapid strides in Europe, and more partic ularly in Germany. America, with its immense network of railways and water communications, should offer peculiarly favorable oppor tunities for the introduction of these ropeways as feeders, more par ticularly in the mining districts, where, as in Europe, a hilly or mountainous region frequently opposes serious obstacles to the em ployment of surface railroads. The importance of the aerial ropeway as a factor in the develop ment of mineral resources deserves the consideration of every mining engineer. As a case in point, the rich iron-ore of the sierra de Bedar in southern Spain, would probably remain untouched to this day but for an aerial ropeway, 15.6 km. (9 3/4 miles) long, which con nects the mines with the shore of the Mediterranean near the town of Garrucha, affording cheap carriage to the nearest shipping point. A railway would have cost about $480,000 (£100,000), but such a heavy outlay would have more than absorbed all prospective profits on the sale of ore. As the aërial ropeway could be built for a little more than one-fourth of that amount, or $124,800 (£26,000), its erection furnished the successful solution of a profitable mining enterprise. This line has been in satisfactory operation for over two yearn; its details will be referred to later. But beside their importance as feeders, ropeways are valuable as a means of conveyance between works and distant warehouses, and between separate buildings in the same works. Their rapidly spreading introduction for such purposes indicates how keenly the necessity of effecting economies is felt under the stress of an everaccentuating competitiop.

RESEARCH looking toward the reduction of the cost of roof support by substitution of longer-life materials for wooden timber is fully justified by the fact that roof support is an important element of all production costs. Permanent or semipermanent roof support will reduce the expense of timber-maintenance crews during steady operations, but even more markedly during idle periods. The management, therefore, is faced with the important problem of timber renewals, which in times of regular operation are frequently obscured by more urgent problems of production. Increased use of timber in the Anthracite Region of Pennsylvania is caused mainly by increased percentage of coal obtained from robbing areas, which requires more timber for safety than develop-ment work, and maintenance of long haulageways through crushed ground despite the fact that less coal is transported over them. The timber reserve in the immediate vicinity of the mines has been depleted to such an extent that it is necessary to secure 70 per cent of the timber requirements from distant sources. Originally, mine timbering in this region was done by largely utilizing round props or legs with round collars. The whole cross section of the tree from which timber was cut was utilized by forming the joints between the legs and the collars with saw and adze, using plank or round saplings for lagging behind the legs and over the collars to prevent material falling between them. The Mine Inspectors' report of 1898 records an important digression from the use of round timber, when two tunnels at the Babylon colliery, near Pittston, Pa., were timbered with 12 by 12-in. square timber sets with mud sills, through quicksand for distances of 425 and 160 ft., respectively. The timbers were lagged with 3-in. plank to control sand.

FOR the first time in 1938, bituminous coal production for the week ending Nov. 19 surpassed that of the corresponding week in 1937, and indexes of industrial activity indicated the possibility that the remaining weeks of 1938 would run ahead of the corresponding weeks of the preceding year. But regardless of this year-end pickup, total production in 1938 was approximately 25 per cent less than in 1937. The estimate of 340 million tons for 1938 places the bituminous industry slightly above the production level of 1933 and approximately 10 per cent above the modem low of 1932. Anthracite production is not subject to the same extent as is bituminous coal to fluctuations arising out of the rate of industrial activity, hence the decline from 1937 has not been so great being approximately 14 per cent under 1937. The estimate for 1938 production is approximately 45 million tons, but this represents the lowest level reached in the last fifty years with the possible exception of several strike years.

MCELVENNY.- Over 20 years ago I went back East on a little tour of copper companies to see how copper was handled and fabricated, and I met a Mr. Bassett who took me through the Waterbury branche of the American Brass Co. Oldright has been temporarily released from his regular duties to act as your secretary. We have asked him and Mr. McElvenny to make the necessary preliminary arrangements and to present to you at the opening session the greetings of the officers and' directors of the Institute. I am very glad that it has been possible for you to come together under the auspices of the Institute and that the acceptance of our invitation has been so very unanimous. Such an acceptance of the invitation to this meeting indicates your interest in getting together for an exchange of technical data and ideas. We anticipate that this meeting will be of real service to the smelting industry through your open discussion and exchange of ideas, and we sincerely hope that you will form an organization which will arrange for future meetings of a similar nature. EXPERIMENTAL work conducted at the Petroleum Engineering Laboratory of the University of California by L. C. Uren, J. Domercq, Jr., and J. Mejia has shown that small diameter wells offer tremendous resistance to the flow of fluids in their immediate vicinity. This resistance is due in part to the constriction of the area through which the fluids must pass as they approach the wall of the well, but is also accentuated by the increased volume which results from gas expansion. The latter in turn is a function of the deduction in pressure, the fundamental cause of fluid movement. If the diameter of the bore is enlarged several diameters, the capacity of the well, or the volume of fluid passing per unit drop in pressure per unit of time, is greatly increased without necessitating such high fluid velocities. The fundamental features which should be taken into consideration in the design of casing joints were stressed by J. B. Graham and E. E. Smith. These involved such points as correct thread design, high efficiency, and small diameter, together with the insurance that leakage will absolutely be prevented. The practical features of such design were ably discussed by engineers from leading steel manufacturers.

This paper .reviews some of the key developments which have been made in the synthesis of the III-V compound semiconductors and the associated progress in obtaining high-quality material for device development. The history of the investigation of the semi-conducting properties of these materials has indicated the need for synthesis techniques capable of producing rnaterial of high chemical purity and physical perfection. The progress in the area is described, and the present status of quality of several compounds is discussed. In addition, recent studies of localized epitaxial deposition of GaAs into semi-insulating GaAs substvates for the development of arrays of devices ave reviewed. In conclusion, some important areas for future research and developrnent are discussed. INTEREST in III-V compounds as semiconductors dates back to the period 1950 to 1952, when Goryunova, Ioffe, and, in particular, Welker determined that 111-V compounds were structural analogs of the group IV elements carbon, silicon, germanium, and tin and that they were also semiconductors.'-3 Since that time interest in the properties of these materials has ex- panded rapidly. During 1953 and 1954, the first reports of rectification, photoconductivity, and optical absorption in these materials came from several investigators. In 1955, recombination radiation from samples of GaAs, InP, and GaSb was reported by ~raunstein .' This radiation was produced by injected minority carriers from point and large-area contacts. From 1955 to 1960, efforts increased on preparing large, pure specimens of these materials for the study of basic physical phenomena and device exploration. By 1960, materials preparation and the understanding of the physics of some of the materials had advanced to where some very interesting and potentially useful phenomena came under study. The first observation of electric-field-induced changes in the optical absorption edge (Franz -Keldysh effect) of 111-V compounds was reported for GaAs by Moss in 1961.' In 1962 the study of recombination radiation advanced rapidly. Keyes and Quist6 and Pankove and Berkey-heiser7 reported high radiative efficientices obtained from recombination, and then the first injection electroluminescent lasers in GaAs were announced by Hall ef al.,' by Nathan et al.,O and by Quist ef al.,'O and in Ga(As, P) alloys by Holonyak and Bevacqua."
