The phosphate fertilizer industry is at present based mainly on the use of sulfuric acid. This technology results in the generation of large amounts of radioactive gypsum that represents disposal and environmental problems. Also it involves the use of expensive reactors for acidification that necessitates the frequent replacing the damaged agitators. Applying hydrometallurgical techniques such as in-situ, heap, or vat leaching to phosphate processing could solve these problems. In this case, however, nitric acid must be used and dicalcium phosphate (40% P2O5) may be obtained as a final product. It is insoluble in water but soluble in citric acid and is an excellent fertilizer. This technology does not interfere with uranium recovery if desired. In addition it permits the recovery of rare earths which are otherwise lost in the gypsum.

The Mount Angelo prospect outcrops as two copper rich gossans, the larger of which is 250 ft long and 70 ftwide. The mineralization is epigenetic and replaces part of a brecciated and disturbed lime tone and calcareou sediment sequence.Magnetic and self potential survey indicated a substantial body of sulphide mineralization, the top of which was approximately 100 ft below the surface.Diamond drilling confirmed this and established the presence of a mineral body of at least 500,000 tons, extending to a depth of 300 ft. Of the 500,000 tons, 200,000 ton are primary copper ore which a ays 2 per cent copper.This mineral body is not economic at present, but could become economic if copper mining is established elsewhere in the district...

Physical and chemical conditions permitting, in-situ leaching (ISL) of uranium offers a variety of advantages over conventional production methods including less surface disturbance and less solid waste. Commercial production of uranium by in-situ leaching techniques was initiated in 1963 in the Shirley Basin of Wyoming by Utah Construction. On a world-wide basis, ISL uranium production amounted to about 13.2 million pounds U3O8 in1999, approximately 16% of world output. Both acid and alkaline systems are used, the selection of which is primarily dependent upon groundwater quality and related reclamation requirements. ISL offers low capital costs per unit of annual capacity and is particularly flexible in adapting to changing market conditions.

Stillwater Mining Company is currently developing a second underground palladium and platinum mine approximately 21 km (13 miles) west of their existing Nye operation in the Bear tooth Mountains of southern Montana. Portals for the two access tunnels required at the new site were excavated in limestone talus to accommodate4.6 m (15 feet) diameter tunnel boring machines. A review of the technical design, field conditions and construction of the portals is presented.

The share of electric arc furnace based steel production is increasing - New technologies for the production of virgin raw materials for EAF production are under development and on the market - VAI has a strong position in the field of scrap substitution technologies with their COREX«-, COREX«-DR and FINMET«-technology. In late-1998 the steel plant SALDANHA was started up successfully. This integrated compact mill is using the COREX«-technology as hot metal and a combined DR-plant as DRI production unit. Also in 1999 the BHB FINMET« plant Port Headland went on Stream.

The research on this report was conducted to obtain information on the feasibility of producing ferro chromium of varying silicon and carbon contents from domestic chromite. Concentrates from the Mouat deposit were chosen because they typify the chromite found in the Stillwater complex, the largest domestic reserve, and are similar in composition to other extensive North American and foreign deposits. Batch-smelting tests designed to produce high-, medium-, and low-carbon ferrochromium were made in single phase and three-phase, electric-arc, steelmaking furnaces. Agglomeration studies were made in a rotary kiln. Continuous smelting tests were made to yield data on the production of high-carbon ferro chromium and low-carbon ferrochromium-silicon. The carbon content of high-carbon ferrochromium was lowered to the medium-carbon range by oxygen injection. Mouat stockpile concentrates were nodulized in a gas-fired rotary kiln using quartz, limestone, and fluorspar additions in the proportion necessary to flux the slag. The nodules were smelted in a continuous test using coal, coal char, and mixtures of the two consecutively as reductants.

The rapid depletion of known deposits of high-grade ore and the need for development of additional reserves, together with increased interest in open-pit mining of low-grade zinc-lead ores in the Tri-State District, led the Bureau of Mines to examine likely mining sites. Underground operations failed to remove all of the ore in a number of areas, and it appeared possible that some of them might be reworked successfully by low-cost open-pit methods. The South Carthage or Hull tract in Jasper County, Mo., was selected by Bureau engineers as favorable for the development of an open-pit mine.

500 Folsom Street is part of the new Transbay neighborhood in San Francisco, which is being redeveloped after the 1989 Loma Prieta Earthquake damaged a freeway viaduct; removal of the viaduct created parcels of land available for development. The development consists of a 42-story residential tower with a six-level basement. The slender, core-only structure was designed using performance-based seismic design. Subsurface conditions include undocumented fill, Dune sand, marsh deposits, sand, and clay, all overlying sloping bedrock of the Franciscan Formation. The building is supported on a 10-foot-thick mat foundation approximately 62 to 72 feet below street grades; clay, sand, and bedrock are all present at mat subgrade. Under a portion of the mat, sand susceptible to liquefaction was present. The variable subgrade conditions and potential for ground failure, along with the depth of mat subgrade below street grade, created a challenge for the design and construction team to solve. The ground below mat subgrade needed to be improved to mitigate the liquefaction potential and provide more uniform support. The areal extent and depth of ground improvement necessary to support the mat with an acceptable amount of deformation was determined. Settlement was analyzed and subgrade moduli were provided for design of the mat, with multiple iterations performed to converge between the geotechnical and structural models. Based on the project schedule and logistics, it was beneficial to work from street grade to improve the ground. In order to target the depths below the mat and minimize wasted effort and materials within the depth of excavation, grids of jet grouting were determined to be the most economical ground improvement method; however, it was challenging to install the columns from 65 feet above the top of the target zone. During installation, QA/QC was performed to check that the jet-grouted columns were installed to the design depth and diameter and developed the design strength.

Hargraves (1983) has reviewed the phenomenon of instantaneous outbursts of coal and gas with special attention to Australian occurrences. The purpose of this discussion is to highlight some problems and omissions in his review that reflect particularly on the authors' structural geological investigations of outburst-prone coal seams.It is surprising to find that much of the authors' reported work has either been glossed over or the results distorted by Hargraves (1983) and it is, therefore, important to clarify the contribution that structural analysis of coal seams can make.For many years it has been known that faults provided preferred loci for gas outbursts (for example, Briggs 1920-21) but the roie that faults played in outburstprone seams was unclear. The present authors reviewed the association of faults and outbursts drawing upon local investigations and the world-wide literature (Shepherd et aI., 1981), and discussed some wideranging aspects that result from the high coincidence of faults and outburst sites. Without repeating large segments of this article the authors will discuss four aspects of coal seam faulting and fracturing.

An important phase in the Bureau of Mines investigation of electrical machines designed for operation in gassy coal mines is testing enclosures of electrical components for explosion-proof qualities. In brief, this testing consists of filling and surrounding the enclosure with an explosive atmosphere of methane and air and then igniting the atmosphere within the enclosure to determine (1) Whether the resulting explosion is confined without discharge of flame; (2) whether the enclosure walls are permanently distorted; and (3) whether excessive pressures are developed within the enclosure. Ordinarily, the pressures encountered in routine testing do not exceed 100 pounds per square inch gage. Hence, the designer of the machine does not have too much difficulty in taking corrective measures to prevent flame discharge and distortion of the enclosure. Occasionally, however, the explosion pressures greatly exceed 100 pounds. Then the goblet of the designer may not be solved so readily, From experience over the year 0, the testing personnel often can predict that certain construction will result in high. Pressures, but, only in a very general way, has it been possible to advise designers what modifications might be made to reduce the explosion pressures to normal values. For example, if high pressures were developed in a motor starter having a partition with an opening through it, some enlargement of the opening may appear to be the logical procedure, but it has not been- possible to give information concerning the exact amount the opening should be enlarged to prevent development of high pressures .

The central question concerning the health risks associated with mining and processing of taconite ores in the Eastern Mesabi Range is ??does asbestos, of any variety, occur within the gangue mineral population?? Free silica in the form of quartz does exist in the taconite, but silicosis has been relegated to a secondary issue. The focus has shifted to the asbestos minerals and the malignancies that might occur following low-level exposure to dust. Although mineral fibers do exist in the Mesabi taconite ores, Ross, Nolan and Nord conclude ??no asbestos?, as explained in their contribution ??The Search for Asbestos within the Peter Mitchell Taconite Iron Ore Mine, near Babbitt, Minnesota?. Their area of study is located in the eastern Mesabi Range. It is here that the tectonic and metamorphic effects associated with the intrusion of the Duluth Gabbro have been profound. A variety of amphibole minerals have developed as a result of these geological events, some with names recognized within the US Asbestos Standard. The issue tackled by the authors is whether or not these amphiboles are present in the mine and if so whether or not they are asbestiform in habit.

The development and introduction of a preventive maintenance scheme in the coke ovens department, coal preparation section, of The Broken Hill Proprietary Co. Ltd., Newcastle steelworks, is described together with its operation and the results achieved during the first 12 months.'fhe scheme consists essentially of an engineering analysis of the plant to establish maintenance schedules, and to record the details on reference cards.Items are reviewed progressively and a weekly work schedule is prepared, from which work orders are passed on to the maintenance foremen. These foremen in turn originate action orders and issue inspection sheets as required. Results are then reported back to the maintenance planner and used to revise norms, practices, and cycles.INTRODUCTIONWhat is maintenance? Some people consider maintenance to be the work involved in putting things together again after they have fallen apart. The author regards it as the mechanical care and repair of plant machinery and equipment to keep it operating in sound mechanical condition, without undue interference with production processes.Maintenance may be organized or haphazard, and, too often, what has been fondly imagined to be nicely controlled and organized maintenance proves, under pressure, to be more correctly described as haphazard. The CIM Mineral Exploration Best Practice Guidelines (the Exploration Guidelines) have been prepared to assist professional geoscientists and engineers to conduct consistently high-quality work in order to maintain public confidence. The Exploration Guidelines are meant to assist professional geoscientists and exploration practitioners in planning, supervising, and executing exploration programs. In Canada, there are generally two types of public resource reporting: “Disclosure”, as defined by NI 43-101, is the reporting of technical information to the public and market participants for securities legislation purposes where a Qualified Person (QP) must be involved, and reporting of exploration information for governmental agencies to support obligations under laws including the Mining Acts of each of the Provinces and Territories. The Exploration Guidelines are also relevant where the results will not be publicly reported but are intended for internal company use. While this document is intended as guidance for work conducted or supervised by geoscientists in Canada, many of the practices described herein can be adapted to mineral exploration activities in other countries. The Exploration Guidelines are not intended to inhibit original thinking, or to prevent the application of new approaches that may develop into fundamental components of successful mineral exploration programs. Rather than provide prescriptive solutions to specific issues, they include general guidelines for current professional practice and to demonstrate and defend the merits of new methods. These guidelines do not preclude individuals and companies from developing more detailed guidelines specific to their own requirements. The initial version of the Exploration Guidelines was prepared by the Canadian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy and Petroleum (CIM) Exploration Best Practices Committee and adopted by CIM Council on August 20, 2000. On January 9, 2018, CIM Council formed a new committee, the Mineral Resources and Reserves Committee (CIM MRMR Committee) with a mandate to, among other things, update the Exploration Best Practice Guidelines. The mandate for the committee was accepted by CIM Council on March 2, 2018. The new document was adopted by the CIM Council on November 23, 2018.

Six years ago it was my responsibility to give the presidential address, and now that privilege has come my way again. On that occasion we were gathered atWhyalla and I took the opportunity of putting before members some observations on the problems we then faced in Australia, and some gains we had been able to chalk up during those early postwar years. You may recall that we were then just beginning to emerge from the difficulties of postwar reconstructions - of fuel and power shortages, and a grossly inadequate manpower for the tasks facing us. The expansion of manufacturing industry in Australia greatly stimulated by wartime activities, and by the postwar developments of many institutions - ran ahead of the supporting services and of the supply of labour to do thejobs. For many industries this unfortunate state of affairs had meant operating at rates well below their installed capacities and therefore levels of output insufficient for Australia's rapidly growing needs. When I last spoke to you these problems were still with us, though their intensity was beginning to lessen as a result of vigorous efforts by industry and governments to reduce them. But I must confess that my thoughts on that occasion were full of those problems and of the effect they were having on the iron and steel industry of this country-of the coal shortage, the labour shortage, and the many other difficulties we were then faced with - and all at a time when the stepping up of our postwar expansion programme was of vital concern to all of us.What a different picture it is six years later! Although bismuth mineralization is spread widely through the Lachlan Fold Belt in New South Wales, broad grouping of the various deposits can be effected on the basis of geographical and geological (age and type of associated rocks) affinities. As a result, significant concentrations of bismuth can be recognized in the Mid-Western granites, Cobar-type ore, the Yass Silurian acid volcanic belt, and the Albury, Bega, Braidwoodand Bathurst districts.In these deposits bismuth generally occurs in minor amounts associated with molybdenite, wolframite, scheelite, cassiterite, chalcopyrite, galena, magnetite, pyrite, arsenopyrite, and native gold. From this group of minerals three broadly defined associations can be recognized.I. Bi-Sn-W-Mo2. Bi-Au( -Te)3. Bi-Pb-Cu(-Au)There may be some interchangeability of these metals, as instanced by occasional Bi-Cu-W-Mo mirleralization, but pyrite and/ or arsenopyrite are usually prominent in all associations.The first two of these associations occur mainly in the form of narrow quartz veins rarely averaging more than O· 3 per cent Bi, although there is often a marked enrichment in ferruginous material in the oxidized zone.Most of these veins occur within or adjacent to granitic rocks of varying ages (principally Silurian or Devonian), although Bi-Au mineralization tends to be related to more basic igneous activity than the Bi-Sn-W-Mo association.The latter is also occasionally developed in pipes, usually coarse-grained and richer in bismuth (as at Whipstick, the principal mine in New South Wales with a production of 343 tonnes of the metal), or in lower grade, but probably larger tonnage skarn deposits. The bismuth-base metal association occurs mainly in Silurian acid volcanic sequences and may also form low grade but large tonnage deposits, such as is possibly developed at Cobar.

Mining has always been, and still is, an activity which is vital for the development of mankind. This is because a predominant proportion of industrial products and energy is produced from raw materials that are excavated using mining methods. The need for environmental protection and the close proximity of urban settlements and mines in Slovenia have necessitated ever stricter requirements for the excavation of raw materials and introduction of more environmentally-friendly mining methods. This is achieved by implementing a closed eco-technological cycle of raw material excavation within the scope of mining methods. In surface mines, this means prompt reclamation of the degraded surfaces, and in underground mines the use of methods with minimized impact on the surface and on underground water. In underground mines, mining methods with backfilling installed according to the multi-barrier disposal system are the only ones that allow the possibility of implementing a closed eco-technological cycle of excavating raw materials. Various industrial waste materials are also included in the backfilling material in order to improve its strength properties. Backfilling consisting of several different waste materials is produced in the form of a composite. Before backfilling consisting of waste material composites can even begin to be used in mines, an environmental impact assessment of its suitability for mines needs to be made. In order to make such an assessment, a pressure leaching cell and an open diffusion cell were made, i.e. a pressure leachate test and a sorption test were developed. The two cells and the developed tests will enable the study of the influence of backfilling on the environment if installed in an underground mine. The pressure leachate test performed with the use of the pressure leaching cell simulates leaching from a consolidated backfill during the seeping of underground water into the backfilling material under pressure. The sorption test performed in an open diffusion cell simulates the flow of eluate leached from the backfilling material through the rock/geotechnical barrier. The two tests were developed in such a manner that they are performed either in succession immediately after one another, but they can also be performed separately at a certain time interval. The paper presents an assessment of the suitability of backfilling made of different waste material composites. The U.S. Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) has identified ore pass hazards as a significant safety problem in underground metal mines in the United States injury and fatality data show that many injuries are related to pulling or freeing ore pass chutes and structural failures of control gates and ore pass walls. Researchers at the Spokane Research Laboratory of the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health are investigating these hazards and developing methods to improve safety during transport of ore and waste. Particle flow analysis methods were used to simulate chute and control gate response to various material loading scenarios. Results from computer models indicate that dynamic impacts from ore and waste rock might be considerably greater than theory predicts. Static and dynamic loads were measured in a laboratory setting using scaled ore (sass mock-ups. Field tests were initiated in an active ore pass to determine actual static and dynamic loads. Field data were compared to computer results and indicated that impact and total static loads were substantially less than the computer model results suggested. Damping factors, normal and shear stiffness, and mass frictional characteristics have a significant effect on particle flow and resulting impact loads.

A new warehouse built with prefabricated components over an area underlined by soft marine soil deposits started showing differential settlements well before its completion. Its 103 spread footings carrying up to 4,000kN (450t) axial loads had been cast on jet-grouted columns extending and penetrating a layer of sand at a depth of 10m (33ft). Investigations performed to assess the wholeness and consistency of the jet-grouted columns revealed a state of loose jet-grouted masses and uncontrolled, off target migrations of the jet-grouting. Most of the jet-grouting itself was settling. The following remedial solutions were suggested: 1. Construction of new and better controlled jet-grouted columns. 2. Cement-based soil grouting. 3. Expanding resin injections. 4. Minipiles drilled-through the existing footings and reaching into a denser layer of sand existing at 23m below grade. Remedial solution 1. was immediately discarded due to cost and the possibility of a repeating failure in this non-granular and highly compressible soil. Tests of remedial solutions 2. and 3. were carried out. The outcome of the grouting was monitored by Electro Resistivity Tomography (ERT) (Bares et al., 2003), an innovative 3D electro tomography procedure showing where grout had been actually placed and its migrations off target. A successful 4,000kN (450t) load tests confirmed the validity of the solution. Finally, upon the completion of a successful load test, solution 4. was chosen. It supplied the highest degree of reliability thanks to the ease of controlling the final and actual location of the minipiles and to the higher safety factor provided. All remedial work to install the minipiles was eventually performed inside the building. Additional load tests and settlement measurements confirmed the adequacy and success of the chosen solution.
