This paper presents a matrix formulation of factorial kriging, and its relationships with simple and ordinary kriging. Similar to other kriging methods, factorial kriging can be applied to both stationary and intrinsic stochastic processes, and is often used as a local operator. Therefore, the concepts of intrinsic random function and local stationarity are first briefly reviewed. Kriging is presented in a block matrix form in which the kriging solution is useful not only for understanding the relationships between simple and ordinary kriging methods, but also the relationships between interpolative kriging and factorial kriging. When used as a signal/noise-filtering method, factorial kriging is especially useful for multiscale modelling. Examples for general signal analysis and geophysical data signal filtering are given to illustrate the method..

Gold mines produce unique water treatment requirements. This paper focuses on case studies of innovative processes used for treatment of water resulting from gold mining and processing. The case studies include treatment of mine dewatering water for beneficial application from an Australian gold mine, Bendigo Mining, as well as treatment for arsenic removal of tailings water from mining and processing at Goldcorp mines in Canada. Gold mining can often require dewatering to prevent groundwater seeping into and flooding the mine workings. Gold mining and processing often accumulate wastewaters in a tailings dam. The mine water can contain contaminants such as dissolved salts, iron, arsenic, manganese, heavy metals and odorous sulfates. Environmental discharge requirements as well as community needs for water drive mine operators to consider the most appropriate water treatment process. Treatment of gold mine water can require processes including oxidation, pH adjustment, coagulation, flocculation, clarification, further oxidation/adsorption of specific metals such as manganese, filtration, salt reduction utilising reverse osmosis, brine minimisation and other innovative technologies. These processes are discussed through the case studies with examination of the specific treatment process that is required. This paper uses real case studies of gold water treatment processes to explain and examine the technology and the reasons for designing specific processes. The focus is toward explaining innovative processes where the water is used for sustainable environmental discharge or treatment to a quality that can be beneficially used by the local community.

A statistical technique, useful to analyze assay and other data characterized by location in three dimensions, is described in this Bureau of Mines report. If present, trends in the data are defined for the purposes of improving ore estimation, predicting ore beyond existing workings, and aiding geological interpretation. The technique is to fit linear and quadratic polynomial equations to the data through the statistical method of regression analysis. The fitted linear equations have the geometric form of hyperplanes; the fitted quadratic equations have the geometric form of ellipsoids or elliptic hyperboloids of one or two sheets. To visualize these three-dimensional forms, contour maps of a series of plane sections through the fitted surfaces are plotted. Both the fitting of the polynomial equations and the plotting of the con-tour maps are done by electronic computer to facilitate calculations and to obtain accurate results. Computer programs are described in appendixes. Methods employed are illustrated by an example analysis) based on data from a part of the Fresnillo mine) Zacatecas, Mexico.

Following the experimental work of Denny, Robson, and Irwin, and the clinical investigation by Crombie and Blaisdell, an investigation of aluminium therapy was begun at Washington, Pa., which is situated In a very large industrial section of the State. Some of the men to be studied were from plants manufacturing silica brick, refractories used in steel and glass manufacturing, and semi-porcelain table-ware; others were workers in foundries, sand blasters, and men engaged in the quarrying of ganister rock.This group of workmen gave an opportunity to study the effects of aluminium on various types of silicosis which differed somewhat from that found in hard-rock miners.EXPOSUREIn their occupations, the men studied were exposed to silica dust concentrations ranging from 17 to 97 per cent free silica. In the silica brick industries, the unfired product averages 96 per cent silica in the form of quartz, whereas the fired brick contains 50 to 62 per cent. cristobalite plus 11 to 80 per cent. tridymite, forms of silica that, on account of their higher solubility, are more toxic than quartz. The operational dust counts in the plants varied from 15 to 9,500 particles per c.c., and the median particle size from the aerial samples was 1.0 micron for the green product and 2.0 microns for the fired product. The length of exposure varied with the occupation as well as with the individual plant, but disabling silicosis could be produced in less than four years in certain exposures. The average time needed to produce radiological silicosis in those susceptible to this disease was eight years. Some of the men in our series of cases have been treated as long as fifteen years after exposure had ceased, and have improved under treatment.The dust counts mentioned above had been reduced prior to the aluminium therapy studies and the presen.t exposures do not exceed '900 particles per c.c., the average being 370 particles. per c.c. This improvement in dust conditions was due to improved dust control apparatus, which was installed before aluminium therapy was instituted. To exploit an underground mine effectively and safely, it is important to have a good understanding of the geotechnical behavior around underground excavations made in the mine. The aim of this study was to investigate the geotechnical behavior around a tunnel excavated in a metal mine in China at the three-dimensional level. Using the information available on lithology, geological structures, in-situ stress measurements, physical and mechanical properties of intact rock, discontinuities and interfaces between different rocks, a three-dimensional numerical model was built by using the 3DEC software to simulate a tunnel excavation under a high in-situ stress condition. Effect of the discontinuity network, possible intact rock and discontinuity parameter variability, representation of rock masses as discontinuum or continuum material and rock support system on the deformation, stress, failure zone and stability around the tunnel was investigated. A very good agreement was obtained between the collected field deformation monitoring results and the results of the conducted numerical stress analyses.

Cyanide is a fast-acting, highly toxic substance but, at the same time, is deemed essential for sustaining life as well as our standard of living. In this manuscript, the facts about cyanide are presented beginning with a brief history and definition and ending with a discussion on cyanide alternatives. Other topics include speciation, physical characteristics, toxicity, manufacturing, cyanogenics, cyanide cycle, separation, destruction, and markets including those outside the mining industry. Emphasis, of course, is placed on gold production by leaching and how it is influenced by ore type, mineral characteristics and economics as well as its advantages and disadvantages.

"It has been suggested that the pre-concentration of ore underground can bring positive economic and environmental benefits to underground mining, particularly at extreme depth. The integration of mineral processing systems for coarse waste rejection and disposal into the underground mining environment has a substantial impact on the economics and operation of the mine. A case study for the integration of underground pre-concentration at Falconbridge’s Thayer Lindsley and Fraser Copper operations in Sudbury, Ontario is discussed, with particular focus on ore evaluation, system design, integration, and impacts on the operation. Conclusions as to the overall feasibility and potential impacts of underground pre-concentration are presented.INTRODUCTIONObjectivesA scoping investigation has been conducted for Falconbridge Ltd on the Fraser Copper Zone and Thayer Lindsley mines in order to develop a better understanding of the operations, and to do a preliminary evaluation of the potential for pre-concentration of the ore underground. The objective was to develop a conceptual design and evaluation of a pre-concentration system for each site. The results are to be used as the basis for a more detailed future study.Underground Pre-ConcentrationThe pre-concentration of ore to reduce the quantity and improve the quality of material transported to the processing plant is not a new concept and has been in practise at several mines including the American Zinc Company in Mascot Tennessee (Munro et al, 1982), the Sullivan Mine in British Columbia and presently at Xstrata’s Mt Isa lead-zinc mine in Australia, as well as at several PGM mines operating in the South African Bushveld. For each of these mines, a high degree of waste rejection was achieved at a coarse particle size with good metallurgical recoveries. The benefits arising from the surface pre-concentration of ore are well documented in the literature (McCullough et al, 1999; Miller et al, 1978; Munro et al, 1982; Schena et al, 1990; Sivamohan & Forssberg, 1991)."

Transportation accounts for some 26% of all mine accidents in South Africa. Although this figure may not be as prolific as fall of grounds accidents or accidents caused by seismic events, the enormity of transportation accidents demands attention, especially as many of these accidents are avoidable. This paper investigates vertical (i.e. shaft), horizontal (i.e. haulages), and in-stope transportation systems and their function as it applies to safety. Recent transportation accidents are discussed looking at current trends within the three transportation areas. In the shaft area, discussions will focus on handling of material cars, loading and off-loading of the workforce and management of shaft orepass systems. The horizontal component will focus on personnel transportation, safety around trains and hoppers, and handling of material in the cross-cut. The discussion on in-stope transportation will focus on the general congestion of the stope environment and how it affects the overall movement of personnel, material, and rock. Of concern are the large numbers of material handling and scraper winch accidents that occur and which will be discussed in some detail. The paper will conclude with a section on proposed guidelines within the three above-mentioned systems for mine engineers to consider in mine design and life of mine planning and scheduling. This paper is the third of a series of reports on asbestos prepared by the Bureau of Mines. The reports already issued contain general information, including descriptions of deposits throughout the world.3/ The present paper deals chiefly with milling and marketing. Many grades of asbestos are marketed, and an important phase of milling is the grading of fiber; these subjects therefore are related so intimately that contiguity in their treatment is fully justified. Although the Bureau of Mines is interested primarily in the mining and preparation of raw materials, the fabrication of asbestos products has attained such importance in the United States that brief reference to processes of manufacture is included. CLASSIFICATION OF FIBER Canadian asbestos fibers are divided into three main groups - crudes, mill fibers, and shorts. The term "crude" is applied to fiber of spinning grade measuring three eighths inch or longer, that is. hand-cobbed and not passed through a mill. Mill fibers are obtained by crushing and beating the fiber-bearing" rock, until the, asbestos is freed and, then removing the fiber from the rock by screening or air separation. Shorts are the lowest grades of mill products.

As mining continues toward deeper reserves in thick western US coal fields, the control of mining induced-seismicity has become a priority in many operations in Utah, Colorado, and Wyoming. Gradual floor heave, common in many coal mines, has historically not been a safety issue. However recent occurrences of sudden floor heave accompanied with seismicity in a few deep mines have fueled this investigation. The focus is to identify and study the mechanisms resulting in sudden heaving of the mine floor in western U.S. deep coal mines through analytical calculations and back analyses of an actual event in a cooperative mine. Based on review of available data in three mines, underground observations and back analyses of an actual event, the authors have identified the following contributing factors (1) presence of stiff stratigraphic units and thick seams mined at depths exceeding 1000-ft (2) presence of geological discontinuities reducing the in-situ strength of the coal with calculated factor of safety near 1 for the mine floor (3) mining approaching areas of higher than normal stress gradient associated with previous mining or structural anomalies or surface topographic highs and (4) an additional source of energy triggering sudden failure such as periodic caving or slip along geological discontinuities. Preliminary examination of seismic data for the actual event in the cooperative mine and underground observations excluded fault slip at the mining horizon as the triggering mechanism but highlighted the significance of weak, anisotropic strata conditions near the intersection of two faults.

The construction of the La Joya hydropower plant (Costa Rica) was awarded by the Spanish power company, Union Fenosa, to the Italian Joint Venture formed by the companies SELI SpA and Ghella SpA. The project, located in a mountainous region of central Costa Rica, includes a 7.9-km-long head race tunnel having an excavation diameter of 6.18 m. A double-shielded TBM was selected to perform the tunnel excavation, which involved mainly volcanic rocks in variable but generally very weak conditions. The tunnel crossed long and continuous sections in completely weathered rock masses with no residual cohesion and with high water inflows. The paper describes and analyzes: The special methods adopted to overcome these sections with the TBM includ-ing face stabilization by chemical grout and foams as well small by-pass tunnels in the crown combined with TBM advance/support The grouting design and the grouting method that was implemented to meet the waterproof design specifications and restore the original groundwater level in the mountain The additional geological investigations performed to improve the knowledge of the rock mass in front of the TBM and the outcomes of these investigations The performance of the TBM in different ground conditions and on average along the entire tunnel Finally, the author’s comment about the possibility of implementing and improving the technologies experimented with in this project in future similar applications.

The main Tintic mining district in central Utah has produced approximately 13,500,000 tons of ore, containing silver, lead, gold, copper, zinc, and other metals, valued at more than $315,000,000. More than 90 per cent of this ore has come from large, irregular ore bodies that have replaced folded and faulted limestone and dolomite strata. Of lesser importance are replacement veins that chiefly cut contact-pyrometasomatized carbonate rocks and fissure veins that cut altered intrμsive bodies and volcanic rocks. The district is in the west-central part of the East Tintic Mountains, a north-trending fault-block range near the eastern margin of the Great Basin. The consolidated sedimentary rocks exposed at the surface and in mine workings are miogeosynclinal deposits more than 10,000 feet thick that range in age from late Precambrian to Late Mississippian. They are folded and strongly faulted and are partly overlain by volcanic tuffs and agglomerates and by extensive flows of porphyritic and vitrophyric quartz latite, latite, and trachyandesite of Eocene age. All of these rocks are locally concealed beneath thick alluvial deposits of Pliocene and Quaternary age. The Eocene and older rocks are cut by dikes, sills, and small stocks of porphyritic quartz monzonite, monzonite, and latite, which are genetically related to the ore deposits. The district is inactive except for the production of halloysite clay and for minor leasing activity and exploration ventures. Several exploration targets remain untested.

[IN CONNECTION with its work on the conversion of coal to liquid cud gaseous fuels,3 the Bureau of Mines has always striven to keep informed of developments in this and related fields so that unnecessary duplication of effort could be prevented and so that useful ideas, presented in scientific and technical literature, could be evaluated as quickly as possible. Thus the E has compiled expensive literature and patent abstracts on the Fischer-Tropsch synthesis4 and hydrogenation d e venation of coal at elevated h temperatures and pressures.5 6 This publication differs from the references just given in that it covers patent applications, which may or may not have been approved for issuance as a patent, and also includes later material. The patent literature is, of courses, a valuable source for new ideas. German patent, have been particularly useful in this field because both processes for the complete conversion of coal to fluid fuels originated in Germany and were thoroughly investigated there because of the shortage or of indigenous fluid fuels. Among the German literature relating to these processes are patent applications. In contrast to the United States, Germany has a system in which applications are published before the final patents are issued. This arrangement permits the public to view all the applications and not just those for which a patent was granted as is done in the U.S. system. When main of the invention are judged not patentable by the German Patent Office, such documents nevertheless may contain useful ideas for scientists and engineers.]

Between 1989 and 2004 the Massachusetts Water Resources Authority (MWRA)constructed several major wastewater and water tunnels associated with three major projects in the Boston area of eastern Massachusetts. There were many similarities and differences in the bedrock conditions encountered and among the contractual approaches for these independent projects. Through a clarification of the approach similarities and analysis of the contract differences, this paper addresses and presents what are considered to be valuable lessons learned. In doing so, the paper follows the evolution of such disparate issues as contract conditions, baseline reports and dispute review boards. The authors believe that the lessons learned even represent what, in certain cases, could be referred to as “universal truths” that are intended to have application to the next generation of tunneling contracts.

For tax purposes a mining company is a New Zealand company whose principal source of income is from the business of mining, or exploring for certain specified minerals in New Zealand. New Zealand tax law distinguishes between a non-resident mining operator and a mining company, with the only major difference in tax treatment being the corporate tax rates. New Zealand mining companies are taxed at 28 per cent, whereas non-resident mining operators are taxed at 33 per cent of taxable income. These provisions also apply to the petroleum mining industry. Individuals who carry on the business of mining are also specifically defined in the Act. They are termed as 'resident mining operators'. Non-resident mining operators are non-residents of New Zealand who carry on mining ventures as a business in New Zealand. Mining ventures are defined as the exploring, searching and mining of specified minerals, including development work carried out for profits. Similar provisions apply to the petroleum mining sector. Specified minerals are defined in the Income Tax Act 1976 ('the Act') and while no useful purpose is obtained by listing them in the paper, they include a larger number of industrial and commercial minerals. The Minister of Finance is also empowered to add to the list by publishing his determination in the Gazette.

A systematic study of groundwater conditions at eight underground mine sites exhibiting a wide range of groundwater qualities throughout Australia has been completed at the WA School of Mines. This has resulted in a new corrosivity classification for groundwater driven corrosion processes for cement grouted cable strand used in the Australian underground mining industry. The new corrosivity classification is simple to use and corrosion rates may be predicted from readily obtained in situ measurements of groundwater dissolved oxygen.

Significant advances have been made in the design of centrifugal slurry pumps that are used for pumping high-density viscous and paste slurries. This paper presents the results of a series of centrifugal pump performance tests that were conducted using an FLSmidth 6 x 4 Krebs millMAX centrifugal pump. The pump was fitted with a dry mechanical seal to prevent dilution of the slurry from gland service water, as the theology of the slurry is sensitive to small changes in slurry density. Tests were done using paste kaolin slurry with Bingham yield stress values between 578-1 120 Pa and plastic viscosities between 728 and 1491 mPa.s. The viscous properties of the paste during each pump test were measured using a rotational viscometer. Pump head and efficiency de-rating were measured and compared to the correlations of Walker and Goulas (1984). The test data shows the pump's best-efficiency point (BEP) changes and shifts to the left of the performance curve. The pump efficiency decreases as the slurry yield stress increases. The head de-rating data shows more head de-rating at the low flow rates compared to the high flow rates for the high viscosity slurry, which is in line with the findings of Walker and Goulas (1984). This paper demonstrates that it is possible to pump very viscous, high yield stress slurries with limited head and efficiency de-rating using centrifugal pumps, provided that positive suction conditions are maintained at all times.

"Although Canada has achieved one of the highest living standards in the world, people and organizations have, over the past decade, begun to question the cost and means of this achievement. Concern has been expressed about the degree of environmental disturbance arising from industrial activities which have greatly contributed to our increased living standards. These industries include hardrock mining, pit and quarry operations, hydro-electric schemes, various agricultural enterprises and urban land developments.In the construction and operation of the above industries many environmental problems arise because the natural vegetative land cover is destroyed or drastically disturbed. Disturbance may occur to such a degree that revegetation is di ffi cult, often it appears impossible. Portions of the environment around such industries remain aesthetically unacceptable and appear to offer little or no potential for future resource use in wildlife, recreation or agriculture.The general public cannot dissociate itself from the activities of the aforementioned industries. It has, over many years, accepted the benefits and conveniences arising from those activities. Despite this, the increasing level of public concern imposes upon industry a need to alleviate or repair past, present and future environmental disturbance. Therefore it is incumbent upon industry to modify present technology or develop new techniques which would allow the disturbed environment to be easily and rapidly repaired."

The Physiographical Features of the Region The Middleback; Range proper, from the Iron Duke in the south to the Iron Prince in the north, extends in a meridional direction for 21 miles, but may well be taken to embrace also the Iron Knob and Iron Monarch prominences so that the total length of the Range is 37 miles.Although no great altitudes are reached, the slopes of the high country are steep and the Range stands out prominently above the peneplaned surface of upper Eyre Peninsula. The Range is built up of sub-parallel ridges at some places, and its continuity is interrupted by transverse breaks or gaps resulting from normal stream erosion and corrosion during earlier periods when precipitation was heavier and streams were more active. Traces of high-level gravels remain on the flanks of Kimba Gap. A former mature stream on the western side of the Range has had its lower reaches blocked by sand and the old stream channel has been converted into an eiongated basin of internal drainage. The sand dunes in this area appear to be practically stationary at present, being fixed by mallee vegetation. Their trend is west-northwest.The relief of the Range is regarded as having been determined primarily by meridional strike faulting and selective silification of some of the beds.
