Heat and humidity buildup within refuge alternatives (RAs) may expose occupants to physiological hazards such as heat stress. The Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) regulations require RAs in underground coal mines to provide a life-sustaining environment for miners trapped underground when escape is impossible. RAs are required to sustain life for 96 h while maintaining an apparent temperature (AT) below 95 °F (35 °C). The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) tested a 10-person tent-type RA, a 23-person tent-type RA, and a 6-person metal-type RA in its underground coal mine facilities to investigate the thermal environment over a 96-h period. The test results showed that mine air and mine strata temperatures surrounding an RA occupied by simulated miners (SMs) increased over the 96-h test period. The test results suggest that RA manufacturers should consider this increase in temperatures when calculating and evaluating RA components during surface and laboratory tests. The findings can equip stakeholders with additional considerations for calculating the interior heat and humidity temperature profiles for occupied RAs not tested in situ

From a vast army of workers to gargantuan machines to immense volumes of material being moved, almost everything about the Port of Miami Tunnel (POMT) project points to tunneling on a massive scale. Almost.The star of this underground and underwater show is a Herrenknecht tunnel boring machine (TBM,) nicknamed ?Harriet? by a local Girl Scout troop. With her 12.9-m- (42.3-ft-) diameter cutting head and a total length of 139 m (457 ft), Harriet is boring through thousands of cubic meters of clay, dirt and sand, which is often mixed with coral and other materials, to create two 1,280-m (4,200-ft) traf?c tunnels connecting Watson Island and the Port of Miami (Dodge Island) beneath Biscayne Bay, FL. But in the midst of all of the oversized equipment and machines, a strong contender for the best supporting nod goes to a relatively tiny machine: the Brokk 400. Bouygues Civil Works Florida crews are using the compact, remote-controlled and electric-powered machine to excavate five cross passages between the twin traffic tunnels. The pas-sages will be essential to the safety of people who drive their vehicles under the bay every day.

Hydro-Jex© releaching was undertaken during the summer of 2010 at the Valley Leach Facility (VLF) at AngloGold Ashanti?s Cripple Creek & Victor Gold Mine. Several advancements to the technique were made in response to the technical design and operational challenges posed by the unique site conditions. New geophysical resistivity monitoring techniques were developed to monitor solution migration during the injections. These developments are presented along with discussion of gold production resulting from the project.

Several mineral process modeling and simulation packages are currently available for use in evaluating the performance of alternative process flowschemes. A critical link that has been missing from these packages is the ability to quantitatively model the effect of size reduction on the liberation of the valuable and waste minerals in the ore being processed. Although there have been several approaches taken to this problem over the past 25 years, none has led to a satisfactory conclusion. A technique has been developed for measuring the effective liberation characteristics of magnetic taconite ores, and a program has been constructed which makes use of these liberation characteristics in simultaneously simulating both size reduction and mineral liberation as it occurs in tumbling mills. This is an especially important step in the modeling of magnetic taconite processes, where magnetic rejection of low grade wastes between grinding stages mandates that a predictive capability be available. The current application is specific to magnetic taconite, but it is possible that a similar approach could be used for other types of mineral systems.

Unfortunately from 1991 through 1995, 44 miners were fatally injured in the stone industry. Of these 12 occurred at underground mines from a total work force of less than 2,000 miners. Nine of these 12 miners were fatally injured in falls of roof or rib. A safer environment for the miners can be achieved by evaluating the nature of the hazardous ground and by developing more efficient and effective ground control strategies. Roof and rib conditions in the underground stone industry were observed and assessed at 33 mines in Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Maryland, Missouri, Pennsylvania, and West Virginia [(Figure 1)]. Hazard assessment indicated that those ground failures occurring under moderate to substantial overburden (> 30 m [l00 ft]) were caused by stress concentrations and geologic structures. Ground failures near the surface are caused by solution (water) processes. Selection of the mining horizon and mine layout decisions tremendously influence ground stability.

The Tailings Leach Plant (TLP) of the Zambia Consolidated Copper Mines Ltd at Nchanga was commissioned in 1974 as the world's first largest successfully operated agitation leach SX-EW plant for copper production. The design, development and operation of the plant soon after commissioning termed as TLP stage II has been described by Holmes et al (1). In the initial phase the plant was designed to treat approximately 25,000 tonnes per day of current flotation tailings from the Nchanga Concentrator operations, and had a design capacity to produce 75,000 tonnes per annum of copper. Further expansion took place in 1986, and TLP stage III was successfully commissioned to treat an additional 20,000 -25,000 tonnes per day of large reserves (over 135m tonnes) of reclaimed tailings stockpiled since the early 1930's in four paddock type tailings dams (T01 to T04). The salient feature of TLP stage III expansion described by S K Mwenechanya et al (2 -3) was the installation of the world's largest Horizontal Belt Filter Plant with 26 filters each of 80 m2 filtration area.

South Arturo is a “Carlin-type”, breccia-hosted, oxide gold deposit located at the north end of the Carlin Trend. The discovery hole was drilled in July 2005 from mine dumps 1,000 feet south of the Dee open pit. Discovery hole (BD-72) encountered a cumulative 245 feet @ 0.056 opt Au beneath 850 feet of post mineral Tertiary Carlin Formation. Oxidation extends to depths greater than 2,000 feet in the deposit area. The deposit is presently in definition drilling stage with approximately 190,000 feet of drilling completed to date. A resource estimate is in progress. This paper will focus on the discovery and descriptive characteristics of the mineralization.

In this study, numerical simulations of yield pillars employing the finite element method with time-dependent Drucker-Prager material model are conducted. The stress control mechanism of yield pillars on weak floor strata is studied. The development of pillar yield zone, the distribution of pillar stress and the development of failure zone in the weak floor strata are investigated. The study indicates that a properly selected yield pillar size may significantly reduce the peak stress induced in the weak floor strata and effectively control the development of failure zone in the floor.

This paper describes a number of aspects of the design and construction of a driven tunnel which forms part of the Boggo Road Busway project. The driven tunnel is 430m long with an excavated width of 15m and a full tunnel excavation height of 8m. The first section of driven tunnel was excavated under the heritage listed Boggo Road Jail for a length of 120m. The main jail buildings and perimeter walls were built in 1908 and are of brick construction. Ground cover over the tunnel beneath the jail site varied from 5.5m to 8m and as a consequence the predicted settlement values and their potential to cause damage to the buildings were critical to determining and obtaining approval for the selected tunnel alignment. The geology along the driven tunnel alignment was very variable, providing mixed face tunneling conditions and ranging from surface residual soils to high strength rock at depth. The maximum ground cover above the driven tunnel is 20m.

The formation of the gas emission zone in longwall mining and the potential amount of gas in this zone are factors of local geology and spatial variability within this geology. Therefore, geostatistical methods can be used for modeling and prediction of gas amounts and for assessing its uncertainty in the gas emission zone of longwall mines. This study used core data obtained from 64 exploration boreholes drilled from the surface to the bottom of the Pittsburgh coal seam in a mining district in the Northern Appalachian basin. After identifying important coal layers for the gas emission zone, semivariogram modeling was conducted for different coal seams to define the distribution and continuity of various attributes. Sequential simulations were performed for stochastic assessment of these attributes to calculate gas-in-place (GIP) in each coal seam. GIP calculations for coals of various gas emissions zones were combined and ranked for their cumulative distribution function to find GIP in the caved zone and in the fractured zone at the 5%, 50%, and 95% quantiles. Fifty percent quantile results were later used to isolate a panel from the whole area and create a mosaic representation corresponding to the daily advance rate of the longwall face. This approach helped to estimate the daily emissions of this panel from the caved zone and from the fractured zone. Results showed that gas-in-place in the Pittsburgh coal seam, in the caved zone, and in the fractured zone showed spatial correlations that could be modeled and estimated using geostatistical methods. This study showed that gas-in- place volumes in the study area may be as high as 12.3 Bscf and as much as 3.5 MMscf per acre of mining.

The city of Kuala Lumpur was founded in 1857 by miners seeking tin near the confluence of the Klang and Gombak rivers. The rapid development of the city and surrounding area since independence has led to more rapid runoff during rainstorms and to gradual canalisation of the rivers with some restricted sections. The outcome has been more frequent and more severe floods (Abdullah 2006). At the same time the centre of Kuala Lumpur has become a modern inter-national city with tall office buildings, hotels, and shopping centres connected by a network of wide roads and commuter rail systems. With these the cost of dislocation during floods has risen as has the cost of making good damage afterwards. The Government of Malaysia considered these consequences unacceptable and sought ideas from the private sector for a solution. Potential solutions consisted of variations on the themes of bypassing the city centre with a flood relief tunnel or of providing off channel storage or a combination of both. Since under Malaysian law a tunnel cannot be constructed under private property unless this is first purchased or agreement reached with the owner, it was necessary for most of the tunnel alignment to run below existing heavily congested roads. After considering these facts Gamuda Berhad and MMC Berhad, two leading Malaysian development and construction companies, decided to propose to Government an innovative solution in which the tunnel would be used to carry road traffic except during floods.

In currently used mining methods, blasting techniques often causes dilution of valuable ore and results in costly processing requirements. In the context of narrow vein mining of thin and highly concentrated orebodies there is a need of a mining method that can reduce dilution in order to remain economically viable. This research project explored the viability of a new mining technology, thermal fragmentation, in narrow vein mining. Thermal fragmentation technology uses a flame jet to produce extreme heat that spalls the surrounding rock to a strategically located drill hole, as an alternative to traditional blasting. This paper creates a net present value (NPV) model of a mining method using thermal fragmentation, as well as for an existing method used for narrow vein mining; comparisons and evaluations were made regarding the feasibility of the new technology. It was found that while overall costs for thermal fragmentation were relatively high, reductions in wages, haulage and processing costs, as well as increased productivity and ore recovery, meant that the new method would improve the financial performance of any operation. These results identify that there is an opportunity to introduce the thermal fragmentation technology to narrow vein mines within Australia, in order to lower costs and increase profit.

London Underground is the oldest and one of the deepest Metros in the world. The temperature of the Underground has been increasing over the last 100 years, mainly as a consequence of increases in train service. Further increases in train service are planned in the coming years to meet the predicted growth in passenger demand. Unabated, the additional service will increase temperatures on the Underground. London Underground Limited (LUL) has therefore set up the Cooling the Tube Programme (CTP) to tackle the issues of thermal conditions on the Underground. Some of LUL?s studies and cooling methods have borrowed experience and techniques from the mining industry; some of methods used or proposed may in turn be of interest to the mining community. This paper presents a background into the sources of heat on the Underground network, the manner in which the heat is presently dissipated, the analysis of future temperatures and criterion and a number of means and methods being used or proposed to cool the network in an environmentally sensitive manner.

Over the past decade the number of contractors working in underground coal mines has nearly doubled; however, the effect this has had on the industry?s injury rates has been the subject of much speculation. The confusion exists because the U.S. Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) database does not assign contractor hours to the individual mining operations where they worked. To better understand the safety record of the contractor segment of the industry, the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) undertook a comprehensive analysis of the data contained in the MSHA database. The first part of the study compared overall contractor and operator trends from 1983 to 2009 related to employment, hours worked, injury rate, and days lost. One unexpected finding was that the larger contractors tended to have higher injury rates than the smaller ones. The second part of the study directly addressed the role of contractors on the safety record of 10 large underground coal mines. A detailed analysis provided both injuries and estimated contractor hours worked at these mines for the period 1992?2007. Comparison between the estimated contractor injury rates and the reported operator injury rates at these mines indicated that the contractor injury rates were significantly higher at most of the operations studied. However, the industry-wide data indicates that contractor and operator injury rates have converged since 2005 and are now equivalent.

Oregon Resources Corporation (ORC), an industrial minerals mining company, is currently engaged in the development of a new process design that will allow the unique paleo-beach placer deposits of southwestern Oregon to be mined efficiently and economically, creating an additional domestic source for chromite, garnet, and zircon. Engineering design has been guided by the variable geology and mineralogy of the paleo-beach placer deposits as well as the need for a dry tailing scheme that resolves a lack of water resources at the placer locations and at the same time eliminates the need for slurry settling ponds, typical of paleo-beach placer operations in North America. Metallurgical study of the placer material was grouped into four distinct samples based on marine terrace deposition, geological facies, and mineralogy. Because the metallurgical samples represented the extremes likely to be encountered in all future Oregon paleo-beach placer ores, the process design is highly dynamic and will successfully adjust to meet the production needs. Water availability at the mining area is seasonal and will not support a typical placer operation?s water requirement needs for heavy mineral concentration. For this reason, ORC has developed a plan to construct the ore processing facilities near Coos Bay, where a municipal source of water is available. Raw ore will be transported from the mining sites approximately twenty miles one way to the processing facility with return loads hauling tailings back to the active pit. The need to haul dry tailings, return dry material to the pit for reclamation, and limit the amount of water being purchased from the municipality has driven the design of a unique water reclamation system. BACKGROUND Location and Access Economic concentrations of ?black sand? or heavy mineral (minerals with specific gravity greater than 2.85) have been recognized and studied in marine placers from Coos Bay to the mouth of the Rogue River, a distance of approximately 75 miles along the southern Oregon coast (Hornor, 1918; Griggs, 1945)(Figure 1). ORC will begin mining existing reserves approximately 20 miles south of Coos Bay in a region known locally as Seven Devils. Ore will be trucked north to the processing site near Coos Bay via use of existing county and state roads, including U.S. 101. The available facilities at the processing site include highway, rail, municipal water and electricity, natural gas, and a deep water port. At the time of this writing, the rail line had been abandoned, but was being pursued by the International Port of Coos Bay. It is anticipated that this will be serviceable at some time in the future. History The southern Oregon marine placers have garnered the interests of miners since 1852, when present day beaches were exploited for gold. The beach deposits were small and irregular in nature and were easily washed away by the major storms the coast endures during the winter months (Hornor, 1918). [ ] In the 1920?s, deposits at the beach were followed upstream to their paleo-beach terrace origins (Pardee, 1934). These terrace placers were mined, but with little success, as the cost of mining and processing was greater than at the present day beach deposits. The greatest effort to understand and delineate the paleo-beach terrace placers came during World War II. As the need for a domestic source of steel hardening chromite was evident, the heavy mineral bearing placers of southwestern Oregon provided just that. The U.S. Geological Survey, under guidance from the Oregon Department of Geology and Mineral Industries, began exploration drilling of the paleo-beach terraces in 1940 (Griggs, 1945). This work was part of the investigation of strategic mineral deposits and would ultimately supply much needed chromite for the war efforts. Twin bore running tunnels driven approximately 4,500 route feet by a Mitsubishi Heavy Industries (MHI) EPB Tunnel Boring Machine link the West Portal and East Portal on this complex Light Rail Project. One third along the way, the TBM arrives at the Beacon Hill Station which is the deepest underground “binocular” station of its kind in North America and then “walks-across” the station to be re-launched on the other side to complete the drive. This paper discusses briefly the layout and design considerations but then focuses more deeply on the approach by the Contractor to drive and supply the tunnel. The paper addresses the approach used to launch, re-launch and recover the TBM and touches briefly on muck volume control and monitoring plus settlement monitoring and the performance achieved. Also of interest is a unique solution to a difficult launch situation involving a secant pile tieback wall designed with several rows of double I-beam steel walers spanning the eye at the West Portal under the I-5 freeway.

Editor’s note: This is the second part of a two-part series on how mine geologists added about 141t (4.53 million oz) at Newmont Mining’s gold operations in Nevada during 2003. Part one (ME, July2004, pp. 19-26) showed how cross-functional teamwork among mine geologists, engineers, metallurgists and operators added $65 million in revenues at Newmont’s Gold Quarry Mine. Part two deals with how this same cross-functional team added about 25.8 t (830,000 oz) of gold reserves and two years of life at the company’s LoneTree Mine. This was done through improved reconciliation methods, pit optimization designs and updated geotechnical parameters. Part two also discusses how Newmont’s Nevada mine personnel added about 62.2 t (2 million oz) of gold reserves at its Twin Creeks Mine, extending the mine’s life by several years. The South Lake Union Pipelines contract for King County Wastewater Treatment Division and Seattle Public Utilities in Seattle, Washington included three 1.8 m (72-in)inside diameter microtunneled pipeline segments totaling about 793 m (2,600 lf).Tunnel alignments were within street right-of-way of heavily traveled urban roadways. Project challenges recognized in the design included: high groundwater levels; contaminated soil and groundwater; variable soil conditions, including fill; and timber piles and other obstructions remaining from historic land uses. The tunnels were built using a Lovat MTS Microtunneling machine, beginning in spring 2003. Conditions encountered during construction presented additional challenges beyond those anticipated in the design process, and were successfully addressed by the owners, designer, and construction management consultant all working with the contractor. Problems included highly variable soil conditions, cracking of reinforced concrete pipe joints during pipe jacking, a timber pile trestle uncovered during shaft construction, and obstructions encountered in the second and third microtunnel runs.

Slurry diaphragm walls are commonly used as both temporary excavation support walls, and permanent structural walls, for circular shafts and long rectangular structures (such as underground subway stations); however, they are not commonly used for more compact rectangular or square shafts. In these instances, a second wall is typically cast inside the slurry walls to form the permanent structure. This paper discusses the approach used on the Silicon Valley Rapid Transit Project in California to analyze these compact rectangular types of structures for static and seismic loading, and to determine whether or not slurry walls can be confidently used as both the temporary and permanent walls for two tunnel ventilation shafts.
