A study of the arrangements for pulp discharge on pebble mills, and their influence on mill performance by A. H. MOKKEN, B.Sc. (Eng.) (Rand) (Fellow), G. K. I. BLENDULF, M.Sc. (London) (Member) Although used for many years in the gold-mining industry, the conventional pan lifter at the discharge end of a pebble mill has hindered attempts at optimization of speed of rotation and pulp flow. A theoretical approach to flow patterns in pan lifters has pointed to limitations in the capacity of these lifters, with capacity decreasing as speed of rotation is increased. Complete elimination of the pan lifter by the adoption of peripheral or end discharge has resulted in a marked increase in pulp flow and an improvement in power utilization. Assays of the gold content of pulp discharged after a mill stoppage from mills fitted with pan lifters show values well in excess of the current milled grade, which indicates an accumulation of gold particles in the mill and, therefore, a longer retention period. The same could apply to other heavy minerals and metals present in the ore feed or worn off mill linings and metallic grinding media. Examples are osmiridium, fine iron and iron alloys, and copper and sulphide minerals. This phenomenon is attributed to the higher specific gravities of these metals and minerals, causing them to migrate towards the mill shell, from which position they are not readily removed by the lifters at the discharge end of the mill. The close association of gold particles with iron and sulphide minerals in the crevices of mill liners might be conducive to the formation of coatings on the gold. Assays of samples of milled pulp taken from a mill designed for end discharge show a lower accumulation of gold. The accumulation and nature of these gold particles are being studied at present. With increasing diameters of pebble (or autogenous) mills, peripheral or end discharge appears to be the preferred method of pulp removal.

The perception exists in many organizations that, once an energy management system is employed, there need not be any further adjustments to such a system. This is not true, as the field of energy management is a dynamic field, and constant feedback and adjustments are needed to enhance the efficiency of a system to the point that substantial pay-back can be obtained. It is stressed that for any energy management system to be successful, careful planning should permeate through the organization, from the top level decision-makers to the workplace. This paper describes a dynamic technique by which energy management strategies can be evaluated by viewing the effects of the strategies on the organization as a whole.

After bench-scale and pilot-plant tests in which it was shown that wet high-intensity magnetic separation (WHIMS) can achieve good recoveries of gold and uranium from Witwatersrand residues, a production size machine was installed at a gold mine. The mechanical and metallurgical performance of this machine have been satisfactory, and the economics of the process are attractive. WHIMS can be combined with other unit operations like flotation for the optimization of overall gold and uranium recoveries. This concept is shown to be relevant, not only to operations for the retreatment of tailings, but to processes for the treatment of coarser material. In the latter, there is a saving in energy consumption compared with the energy required for the fine grinding of the total feed, and a material suitable for underground backfill can be produced. Improved. more cost-effective WHIMS machines currently under development are also described.

BHPBilliton is a large (US$32bn market capitalization) diversified mining group. Significant organic growth is planned through the development of a number of mining, processing and oil and gas projects, totalling some US$5.2bn over the next three years. The investment standards underpin the capital approval process, and incorporate the requirements for range and risk analysis of key input variables, including mineral resources. Public reporting codes for mineral resources and ore reserves (such as JORC) stipulate deterministic reporting of estimates, but are generally silent on any requirement for range or risk assessment, although they acknowledge the risk and uncertainty in the production of resource estimates. In contrast, public reporting of petroleum reserves allow for the use of either deterministic or probabilistic estimation, and for the latter, mandate the level of confidence required for proven versus probable reserves. Conditional simulation techniques, popular in the petroleum industry, provide an ideal tool forrange and risk assessment of the range of outcomes of key resource parameters, such as tonnagesand grades. Examples of a diamond deposit and of a porphyry copper deposit are presented. The understanding and quantification of mineral resource risk through a technique such as conditional simulation provides quantified information on the potential upside or downside. Fresh water conservation efforts and strict environmental regulations have forced the mining industry to reduce freshwater consumption and effluent discharge. This is achieved by recycling process water back to mining processes. The performance of flotation circuits depends on the pulp chemistry. When process water is recycled to flotation cells, organic and inorganic species that have accumulated over time alter the pulp chemistry. The presence of accumulating ionic species such as SO4 2- and S2O3 2- has been found to hinder the adsorption of collector ions onto mineral surfaces. Sulphide minerals are semi-conductors; electrochemical reactions take place on their surfaces. The adsorption of collectors onto mineral surfaces takes place via electrochemical reactions. This study, therefore, aims to investigate how the presence of accumulating ionic species at varying ionic strengths affects the adsorption of sodium ethyl xanthate onto chalcopyrite from an electrochemical perspective. Synthetic plant water comprised of single salts with varying ionic strengths was used. Rest potential measurements were conducted to investigate collector-mineral interactions in the presence of these ionic species. Microflotation tests were performed to determine whether the presence of these ionic species affects mineral floatability. Higher chalcopyrite recoveries were achieved in the presence of SO4 2- than in the presence of S2O3 2-. Rest potential measurements were found to successfully predict microflotation performance in the presence of the ions of interest. Western Deep Levels (North) is a deeplevel, longwall gold mine. Severe strata control problems and high rates of elastic closure, resulting in high rates of energy release, are associated with mining at depths of up to 3 500 metres. To assist in controlling these aspects of mine design and safety, a waste backfilling system has been designed and commissioned. The integration of such a system into an existing, producing longwall brings many problems of logistics, organization, planning and control. It is the purpose of this paper to examine these aspects of fill management, and to describe some of the practical problems involved with the integration of this project into the mining environment. Although many of the rock mechanics and soil mechanics aspects of backfilling systems are common there are specific problems involved which apply to longwall systems. Very strict guidelines are required for planning personnel to design their backfilling systems for a particular situation. These aspects are examined, and basic models developed which can be used without the necessity of comprehensive input from rock mechanics. A summary of the financial implications is included, and these are examined with regard to possible future applications and expansion of waste filling.

High Pressure Grinding Rolls (HPGR) are mostly used prior to pelletising processes to increase the specific surface area (SSA) of iron ore concentrate. For expressing SSA, the Blaine index is utilised as one of the most important dimensional properties of iron ore pellet feed. ISO 21283 is a standard test method that explains the manual of Blaine air-permeability apparatus for determination of this parameter. In this standard, the disaggregation method is based on passing the minus of 1 mm samples from the 0.150 mm sieve. The disaggregation process has an effective role on the results of Blaine airpermeability test especially for regrinding HPGR products. In this research, firstly the Blaine index of samples was measured without disaggregation. Following this, disaggregation was done by passing the minus of 1 mm samples through three sieves with different dimensions, 0.150, 0.090 and 0.045 mm, separately, and the Blaine index was calculated for each one. Finally, lab-mill with rubber balls, called Jar mill, was investigated as another option. Screen analysis and image analysis with SEM were performed to evaluate the effects of the sample's disaggregation on the size distribution and agglomeration of samples. The results showed that the disaggregation method with sieve size 0.150 mm, according to ISO 21283, was not applicable for HPGR products because the particles were still stuck together. In addition, the disaggregation method with the sieve size 0.045 mm or with Jar mill offered reasonable results. By use of a functional model of capital expenditure developed earlier, a prototype cash-flow model is formulated as a basis for the investigation of the economic consequences when the production rate of a mine is manipulated as fundamental design variable. The optimum production capacities that maximize the common economic criteria of net present value, present-value ratio, and wealth growth rate are determined. It is shown that these choices depend certain key groupings of the economic parameters, and that they have a fixed interrelationship. The basic cash-flow model is extended further to include the effects of a constrained rate of production buildup and the imposition of State taxation on generated income. An approximation to the initial tax-free period of a new mining venture is developed, and, by use of these results, the optimum choice of production level is analysed when both the buildup rate is constrained and tax is imposed. This extended model permits a comparison between the performance of existing mines and the predicted theoretical production levels for these mines.

"Blind headings in room and pillar coal mines are a major source of methane and coal dust. Most methane and coal dust explosions therefore occur in the blind headings. The primary cause of these explosions is the disruption of the local ventilation system. Line brattice (LB) ventilation systems are used to ventilate blind headings by directing air from the last through road (LTR) into the heading. The amount of air available to ventilate the face of the empty heading depends on the heading dimension, settings of the LB, and velocity of air in the LTR. LBs are commonly installed by underground supervisory staff based on work experience, which may result in ineffective ventilation. The correct installationof LBs remains a challenge. In this study, a validated computational fluid dynamics (CFD) model has been used to analyse the effect of the LB ventilation system variables on the air flow rates close to the face of the empty heading. Full-scale three-dimensional models with various heading heights, heading depths, LB settings, and LTR velocities were simulated. The air flow rates and patterns at various locations inside the heading were analysed. A comparative study was carried out to quantify the effect of each of these system variables on the flow rates close to the face of the heading. Based on the findings, a user-friendly numerical model was formulated that can be used to estimate the flow rate close to the face of an empty heading for different practical settings of the system variables. This model can help the supervisory staff to swiftly implement the ventilation plan according to the regulations and the mine standards. The model can also serve as part of the curriculum for educating future mining engineers."

Medium suspensions play an integral part in the successful application of dense medium separation for both static and dynamic separators. Although models exist to predict particle movement as a function of medium density and viscosity, these models have been derived on the assumption of Newtonian rheology. Viscosity measurements of medium suspensions have shown that they are non-Newtonian, with a yield stress, and as such cannot be used in the existing models. As a result, medium selection remains an art based upon practical experience and indirect measurements of viscosity such as stability and cyclone differentials.

Reviewer: P.R. Janisch The progress of mining and metallurgy in Australia and their contribution to that nation's economy closely parallel those of South Africa. Australia's was the second of the three great gold rushes of the nineteenth century. It was centred on Bendigo and Ballarat in Victoria, and occurred in the 1850's, a few years after California's forty-niners. The California goldfield also gave birth to the now common term for a tabular gold bearing deposit-a 'reef'. Amongst the fortune-seekers were sailors who had jumped ship on hearing of the riches to be found on land. When the gold ran out, and with it the money, the sailors found themselves stuck on a reef'. But others, more canny, had accumulated the means to move on, and some came to the Transvaal on the news of the Barberton discoveries. One of them was George Harrison.

Rand (Member) Recent studies have shown that the overall extraction of gold from Witwatersrand ores is increased as the proportion of gold reporting to the amalgamation circuit is increased. Testwork has therefore been carried out with a view to improving recovery by gravity concentration. In this paper, the history of gold recovery by gravity concentration is reviewed, and methods and machines at present in use are briefly described. The results of plant and laboratory tests are presented, and the limitation of existing concentrators is discussed. A pilot plant is being built for the testing of improvements to the existing concentrators and of several new devices, particularly the Reichert-cone concentrator.

Overexposure to noise remains a widespread, serious health hazard in the US mining and other industries despite 25 years of regulation. Most categories of illnesses and injuries associated with mining have improved, with the exception of hearing loss. The drilling of rock in a confined work environment contributes to high levels of noise exposure in mining. The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) is conducting research to reduce the noise exposures of jackleg drill operators and to prevent additional cases of noise induced hearing loss (NIHL) by developing and evaluating low-cost retrofit noise controls for equipment. This report describes the procedure for the measurement and reporting of noise from portable pneumatic tools such as jackleg drills. The technique used in this research allows for the determination of the source A-weighted sound power levels and the radiation patterns in octave and 1/3 octave bands. Overall sound power level is also determined. This paper also reports the results obtained by using this procedure to evaluate a SECO S215 standard production drill and a CSIR Miningtek prototype rock drill incorporating engineering noise control measures. It was found that by using the manufacture?s recommended operating pressure of 496 kPa (72 psi) that the CSIR prototype?s sound power was 10 dB(A) less then that of the SECO S215.

Hydraulic fracturing technology is presented as a solution to improve permeability and thus solve the extraction problem of coal seam gas in low-permeability gas-bearing coal seams. Given an existing group of original cracks, the propagation of main hydraulic cracks and hydraulic wing cracks was simulated using realistic failure process analysis software. The process represents the structural transformation of hydraulic fracturing and permeability improvements caused by it. In addition, a field test for improving the permeability of gassy coal seams by hydraulic fracturing was also conducted. The propagation of the main cracks and wing cracks by hydraulic fracturing forms a network of original joint cracks, hydraulic wing cracks, and main hydraulic cracks, which improve the permeability of the coal seam. High-pressure water in the drill hole and in the main hydraulic cracks permeates the two flanks of the hole, forming the permeating water pressure. With an increase in drill water pressure and an extension of the main hydraulic cracks, the permeating water pressure on both sides of the main hydraulic cracks in the coal mass also increases. Hydraulic cracks tend to form connections through rock bridges. The extension of hydraulic wing cracks through connections in the rock bridges between the cracks transforms the rock mass to a fractured structure and improves its permeability. Hydraulic fracturing technology for improving permeability in underground conditions can increase the amount of gas drainage by a factor of 15. A stress relief area develops at a radial distance of 10-2.0 m from the hydraulic fracturing drill hole, while an area of rising stresses, called the pressurized area, develops a further 15 m away from the pressurized hole. Practice has proved the existence of the stress transfer phenomenon and the high stress area after fracturing. This kind of hydraulic fracturing technology is more effective in holes drilled from underground than in surface drill holes, with respect to costs and controllability, and is therefore the major trend in gas drainage development in coal mines.

Most copper/cobalt ores from the Central African Copperbelt contain sulphidic compounds, which are not extractable in direct leaching. Roasting provides the possibility to transfer the valuable components into leachable compounds. In an operation window defined by temperature and off-gas composition it is possible to selectively oxidize iron sulphides to haematite and copper/cobalt sulphides to sulphates. Selective sulphating of the valuable minerals is an important condition for the subsequent leaching stage. The dissolved copper and cobalt are recovered by solvent extraction and electrowinning. This technology has been part of an established process for many decades. The concentrates from recent projects on the Copperbelt have lower sulphur contents, and frequently higher copper contents, than those from older projects. The paper shows the consequences of this trend for plant operation and explains useful counter actions by means of case studies. Autothermal combustion is ensured even at very low sulphur contents. Off-gas treatment has so far been based on SO2 removal through sulphuric acid production. The generated acid is used to make up acid losses in the hydrometallurgical plant section. This well-proven process combination is still the preferred route if the feed sulphur content is high enough; however, some cases may require different off-gas cleaning concepts without compromising on clean air quality. Roasting in a fluid-bed furnace remains the core of the technology. Fluid-bed roasters are easy to operate and provide an excellent control of the calcine quality. Different feeding and heat-recovery systems are used to provide a tailor-made solution for each project. Outotec built it first sulphatizing roaster in Zambia about 30 years ago. At that time, the roasting of metal sulphides was already one of the main technologies in the company. Outotec has developed roasting solutions for copper, gold, zinc, lead, molybdenum, and pyrite ores. The continuously expanded and upgraded research facilities provide an excellent basis for developing sustainable, energy-efficient, and economic solutions for copper and cobalt production in Africa.

South Africa has produced more than a third of the total gold mined throughout history and remains a major although, until recently, no longer the largest producer of gold. South African gold production peaked in 1970 with an output of 1 000 t, a major component of the western world?s gold production, with the development of the country?s economy having been based largely on this mineral wealth. The costs and difficulties of increasingly deep-level mining, coupled with increasing labour costs and the low gold price until relatively recently, have seen production fall steadily since then, with the closure of many mines including those of the Central Rand Goldfield in the mid seventies. Thus in 1998, only 464 t were produced, with 342 tons being produced in 2004. In 2006, 275 tons of gold were produced and after more than 100 years was the last year as the world?s largest gold producer. In 2008 gold production was 221 tons, making South Africa the third largest gold producer after China (292 t) and the USA (234 t). Gold production would have been lower if it had not been for massive tailings dam retreatment operations that started in the late seventies, including in the Central Rand Goldfield. Mining of a remaining deep and lower grade shallow resources has now also become a major focus and has recently lead to a rebirth of reef mining on the Central Rand Goldfield.

The President declared the Meeting open at 4.08 p.m. OBITUARIES The President: Ladies and gentlemen, before we start the business of the meeting, it is my sad duty to announce the deaths of the following members of the Institute since our last meeting: Dr O. A. E. Jackson, Honorary Life Fellow and Past President; C. Airth, T. L. Blunt, A. E. Frazer, C. L. Lamb, and K. Richardson, Life Fellows; and J. T. Beaumont, Fellow. As you know, there were a number of other deaths during the year, which were reported at previous General Meetings of the Institute. As a mark of respect to the memory of the deceased, and in sympathy with the bereaved, I ask you to rise and observe a few moments' silence. The prediction of the mechanical behaviour of South African coal on the basis of current proximate and other chemical parameters gives rise to problems, and the use of ultimate analyses and inferred maceral and rank analyses, although it has improved the situation to some extent, is still not satisfactory. In an attempt to reach a new level of understanding, this paper gives an in-depth review of the fundamental petrographic characteristics of coal and compares these parameters with the main types of mechanical performance. A two-tiered system of primary and secondary parameters is proposed for the prediction of coal behaviour. The primary or inherent parameters include rank and organic composition. The secondary or extraneous factors include such parameters as mineral mater, cracks or cleats, degree of oxidation, and size. In addition, an explanation is offered of several anomalous behavioural conditions in some South African coals.
