The objective of this Bureau of Mines investigation was to determine the effects of adding manganese compounds and ores to iron ore pellets. Manganese dioxide, carbonate, sulfate and chloride, plus six manganiferous ores from the Minnesota Cuyuna Range were tested as additives to increase the manganese content of iron ore pellets. One to 5 percent manganese, as a compound or ore, was added to five magnetite concentrates and one hematite concentrate. These concentrates were ballad, indurated (1,300° C), and tested for reducibility. Manganese sulfate and chloride were unsatisfactory additives causing cracking and degradation of the pellets during reduction. Manganese dioxide, carbonate, and the ores were satisfactory additives. The additives increased pellet compression strengths with a corresponding loss of reducibility, as compared to the pellets without manganese additions. The changes in compression strengths and reducibility were caused by the formation of Jacobite spinel and slag within the pellets. However, when the induration temperature was lowered from 1,300° to 1,200° C the reducibility and compression strengths were comparable to the pellets without manganese additions indurated at 1,300° C.

Curtailment of bauxite importation by enemy activities during World War II focused attention on the necessity of developing domestic deposits of aluminous materials. Large quantities of aluminum ores such as kaolin, siliceous bauxites, high-iron bauxites, anorthosite, and diaspore clays are available but not readily amenable to Bayer processing because of excessive impurities. The Bayer process, which is the only commercial method in use in the United States for producing metallurgical-grade alumina, requires a high Al2O3 bauxite relatively low in SiO2 and Fe2O3. The Bureau of Mines was charged by Congress to investigate processes for the production of alumina from these low-grade ores. One part of the program was an investigation, in the laboratory and pilot plant, of the recovery of alumina by the lime-soda sinter process. Ores comprising kaolin, diasporic clays, anorthosite, and siliceous bauxites have been investigated and studied in the laboratory and pilot plant, and a series 'of reports covering these investigations has been prepared.

The Bureau of Mines has prepared, as circumstances have dictated, a series of schedules setting forth the minimum requirements that various types of equipment should meet to be considered safe and satisfactory for use under certain hazardous or unhealthful conditions. These schedules cover a wide variety of devices ranging from explosives to electrically operated mine locomotives. This paper discusses the functions and operations of schedules under which respiratory protective devices are tested and approved. It emphasizes that the aim of the Bureau respirator-approval system is to make available to the public respirators that meet definite performance requirements. The responsibility of the respirator manufacturer in pre-testing the device and in maintaining its quality after it is approved are explained. Aid is provided for the user in selecting the proper device for specific application, and a plea is made for better education of all concerned in the proper use of the devices. DISCUSSION Provisions have been made for testing and approving the following types of respiratory protective devices: Self-contained breathing apparatus,2/ supplied-air respirators,3/ gas masks,4/ dispersoid respirators,5/ and chemical-cartridge respirators.6/ These devices are tested at the Central Experiment Station of the Bureau of Mines in Pittsburgh, Pa. Self-contained breathing apparatus is tested by personnel of Health and Safety District B; other types of respirators are tested by the Branch of Health Research.

"The House/Senate Joint Conference Committee has instructed the Bureau of Mines to have the Advisory Committee on Mining and Mineral Resources Research review on an annual and simultaneous basis each generic mineral technology research center (GMTC). In order to accomplish that review promptly and uniformly, committee members have revised and approved an in-depth questionnaire. That document formed the basis of their review. The information provided by that questionnaire was an important factor in their recommendations concerning the future direction of the program; a presentation was made at the last National Plan Update.The comprehensive nature of the questionnaire and the scope of the information contained therein make it an excellent retrospective of the Center. Having a clear vision of where the Center has been and knowing where it is now will help guide it into the future. It is felt that such a detailed view of the Center's facilities and research program will be of value to Center personnel and Advisory Committee members.Each aspect of the questionnaire has been examined, answered in detail, and documented throughly. With the completed questionnaire as a guide, this volume examines the research program, Center personnel presently active on GMTC projects, number of graduate degrees granted with GMTC support, GMTC publications, degree of individual interaction, technology transfer, the reference center, GMTC equipment and facilities, and any envisioned plans for future research. It is hoped that this volume will serve as a review of the years 1984-1988, the first four years of the Center's operation."

The purpose of this study is to provide data that demonstrates that the Alcoa flash calciner design can be used for the decomposition of AlCl3?6H2O to A1203. Heat and material valance data for calcination provides data on the partial pressure of HCl in the off-gases. Experimentally determined data for the HCl partial pressure, over solutions expected in producing alumina from clay by the hydrochloric acid process, show that HCl can be absorbed from the off-gases into process solutions to effect crystallization of AlCl3?6H2O.

"INTRODUCTION During the recent war the Bureau of Mines was requested to obtain in¬formation on the temperature at which ammonium nitrate mixed with certa: contaminants would react rapidly. This information was desired in connection with an investigation of an explosion that had occurred during the evaporation, by air agitation, of volutions containing ammonium nitrate in which compressor oil that might have passed the filters was suspected of being a contaminant.During the course of this work it was found that mixtures of ammonium nitrate and zinc reacted rapidly at comparatively low temperatures: and since zinc could not positively be eliminated as a contaminant in the explosion in question, a series of tests was carried out, not only with mixtures of ammonium nitrate and compressor oil but also ammonium nitrate and zinc with and without oil. A few experiments were made with metals other than zinc.The investigation was not as extensive as might have been desired, owing to limitations -in time. The results are presented at this time in view of their current interest in connection with the Texas City disaster, in which a large quantity of ammonium nitrate detonated in the holds of two ships."

"Chromates are known to induce tumors (1, 2), mutations (3), and DNA damage (4-6). However, the underlying biochemical mechanism(s) is (are) not fully understood (6). Recent studies have indicated that hydroxyl (·OH) radical may play an important role (7-11). The mechanistic studies of Cr(Vl)-related ·OH radical generation in biochemical systems have shown the reaction of a Cr(V) species with hydrogen peroxide (H20 2 } through a Fenton-like mechanism to be one of the important steps (9-11): Cr(V) + H20 2 - Cr(VI) + ·OH + OH-. (1)In biological systems the Cr(V) species are generated via the reduction of Cr(VI) by a variety of components, such as microsomes (12), mitochondria (13), mitochondrial electron transfer complexes (14), and at least three flavoenzymes (glutathione reductase (GSSG-R),3 lipoyl dehydrogenase, and ferredoxin-NADP+ oxidoreductase) (9, 15, 16). In the case of flavoenzymes, Cr(V) formation is accompanied by the reduction of molecular oxygen ( 0 2 ) to H20 2 • The Cr(V) species then reduces H20 2 to generate •OH radicals and Cr(VI) (16).To understarid the mechanism by which Cr(V}-generated ·OH radicals cause cytotoxicity, Aiyar et al. "INTRODUCTION In the course of its studies of the explosibility of various coal dusts in the Experimental coal mine, the Bureau of Mines has tested coals representing the entire range of volatile content found in the United States. In connection with their work the Bureau's field engineers some¬times meet operating officials who are not impressed by the fact that there is an explosion hazard in mines working low—volatile coals. Actually the difference in explosion hazard between high—volatile and low—volatile coals is one of degree and not of kind. The purpose of this paper is to set forth briefly the experimental evidence that has been accumulated on the explosibility of coal dusts containing 8 to 31 percent volatile matter on a dry, mineral—matter—free basis.There have been numerous dust explosions in mines in which coals were worked that have compositions within this range. Those explosions are listed in an appendix, together with a bibliography of Bureau of Mines papers describing explosion tests in the Experimental coal mine."

The vibration levels of the heavy machines used in surface mining are much greater than for vehicles used on highways. In order to assure the proper functioning of electronic equipment placed on the surface mining vehicles, the U.S. Bureau of Mines has conducted a program of field measurements to define their vibration environment. The information in this report is for a class of vehicle that has a blade for scraping and wheels with rubber tires. The statistical information derived from these measurements can be used as a basis for laboratory testing to qualify equipment for a surface mining vehicle of this class. The envelope that would encompass 99 pct of the vibrations encountered in normal operations is presented for each location on the vehicle. The five locations for which data were recorded are the floor of the cab, the engine, the frame, the drive train (gear, differential, and torque converter), and the axle. Tabulated data are provided for those who wish to use a different probability level. The appropriate test profile for the laboratory testing can be determined from the information presented in this report.

Development of methanometers and anemometers for underground use in coal mines is reviewed. The first semicontinuous recording methanometer was developed in 1961 in West Germany. The Bureau of Mines developed an instrument using; pellesters that was a continuous recording methanometer. Expansion of freon gas created a vacuum which pulled the methane-air mixture through a tube to an electrically heated, catalyst-impregnated pellester where the mixture was burned. The National Coal Board of England developed a continuous recording methanometer based on the principle of the Davy flame safety lamp. A thermo-pile was used to sense the hurt output of the flame. Finally the Bureau of Mines improved its methanometer by eliminating the freon gas and using a diffuser head to a monitor methane-air mixtures. Development of recording anemometers proceeded from the use of a photo¬cell and light source to sense rotation of the Biram-type anemometer blades to the use of a Hall detector to sense, rotation by measurement of electromagnetic pulses.

This U.S. Bureau of Mines report identifies the types of serious accidents that occur most frequently at small underground coal mines and describes the strategies that could help prevent these accidents. A wide variety of methods for improving safety are suggested, including improvements in the design of equipment, work procedures, work schedules, safety programs, and emergency response plans, as well as techniques for diagnosing the potential hazards associated with new technologies and work procedures. Some of the papers in this volume focus on preventing specific types of mining accidents--ones associated with materials handling (primarily back injuries), equipment maintenance, improper machine guarding, and ground failure during retreat mining. Although the recommendations in this volume are heavily influenced by research performed at underground coal mines in the Appalachian coalfields, most of the papers contain advice that is equally pertinent to almost any type of mine.

This Bureau of Mines report describes a study conducted to determine the relationship of mineral habit to particle size and shape characteristics for prismatic, acicular, fibrous, and asbestiform varieties of tremolite. Particle measurements were made with the petrographic microscope at X 1,250 and the scanning electron microscope at magnifications up to X 10,000. All of the varieties of tremolite, upon Wiley milling, produced a significant percentage of particles that meet the Federal regulatory criteria for counting as asbestos fibers. However, only the asbestiform variety gave milled particles that fell into a size range of >10 µm in length and <0.5 µm in width; some medical scientists consider this range significant for production of adverse health effects.

High-purity neodymium, praseodymium, and didymium (a cerium-free mixture of light rare-earth elements) were prepared by electrolysis of the oxides in a medium consisting of the respective rare-earth fluorides and lithium fluoride. The metals were electrodeposited in the liquid state and collected as nodules on a skull of frozen electrolyte. Cells were operated from 1,000° to 1,100° C. The requisite temperature was maintained by passing alternating and direct currents through the bath. Graphite was used for the anodes and tungsten for the cathode. The metal products contained <0.02 percent each carbon and oxygen and <0.025 percent tungsten as major impurities. Analysis of typical didymium metal nodules showed an approximately twofold enrichment in neodymium and praseodymium over their respective concentrations in the cell feed. The lanthanum content of the metal was about one-half its content in the oxide.

The soil and subsoil are regarded as two distinct parts, the latter extending indefinitely in depth (Art. 2). The subsoil is under the dominion of the State, which may either abandon it to common use, grant it gratuitously to the owner of the soil, or alienate it, in return for an annual fee, to any individual or association that applies for it. The effect of a water-repellent film in sandstone cores on the effective permeability-saturation relationship was investigated as part of a cooperative research program between the Bureau of Mines and the American Gas Association. The repellent film was formed by the reaction of methyltrichlorosilane3 with the connate water in the core. Other researchers have reported on the use of silicone chemicals to alter the flow characteristics of porous media (1-3, 5-7, 9, 10).4 The previous studies, however, dealt almost entirely with oil-water or oil-gas systems and not with water-gas systems. The primary purpose of this study was to determine the feasibility of using silane to retard the influx of water into natural-gas storage wells and to determine the necessary requirements for achieving this result. The success or failure of silane treatment as a remedial measure depends on its effect on gas-production rate and attendant water production.

The present status of the National Bureau of Standards program is that many magnetic tapes of analog data have been recorded in four major mines. Each mine uses different types of equipment. In addition, some surface measurements of noise have been made at two additional mines. Two types of recordings have been made: (1) broadband measurements for spectral plots and (2) narrowband measurements for amplitude probability density (APD) plots. Only data from one mine (Robena #4) has been processed and was, presented at this workshop. The short-term goals are: (1) finish processing data from the other mines, (2) establish or reduce measurement system uncertainties, (3) put Robella report into final form for distribution, and (4) hold a review to determine what has been done, to distribute and to interpret the preliminary data, and to determine what still needs to be done. Long-term goals are: (1) complete final reports on each of the mine trips, (2) establish techniques for predicting noise in mines already visited and establish uncertainty bounds for these predictions, and (3) establish techniques for predicting noise in mines that have not been visited (but that use similar equipment to those visited) and also establish uncertainty bounds for these predictions. Specific factors or formats to be presented include: (A) For underground broadband measurements: 1. 300 Hz to 100 kHz spectral plots 2. 300 Hz to 384 kHz spectral plots 3. 300 Hz to 192 kHz spectral plots 4. 300 Hz to 6kHz (subject to change to 3 or 12 kHz) spectral plots (B) For surface broadband measurements: 1. 300 Hz to 6 kHz (or 12 kHz) spectral plots 2. 300 Hz to 3 kHz spectral plots (C) For underground narrowband measurements : 1. Although heated circuits frequently have been employed in the conditioning stases of certain flotation processes, particularly the flotation of fluorite, the control of temperature is not generally considered economically feasible for the flotation of coal. This viewpoint, although widely held, can neither be substantiated nor refuted by reference to published data. Some evidence is available, however, that temperature is an important variable in the floatability of coal as well as other minerals. For example, Gayle and Swelley4 found that contact angles for coal and related substances were definitely dependent on temperature. Bailey and Whalan5 showed that changes in pulp temperature may exert a pronounced influence on recoveries of coal in batch flotation tests. The present laboratory-scale investigation was undertaken to obtain information about the effects of changes in pulp temperature on coal flotation recovery and also on the selectivity of separation possible using different reagents. The results indicated that flotation recoveries were markedly affected by temperature variations when certain reagents, particularly simple aliphatic alcohols, were used. For other reagents, particularly kerosine, flotation recoveries were substantially independent of variations in pulp temperature. Release-analysis results indicated that temperature variations did not greatly affect the selectivity of separation possible with the reagents tested.

The reactions of alumina and alumina monohydrate with wet hydrogen fluoride gas were studied by the Federal Bureau of Mines to determine the feasibility of producing commercial-grade aluminum fluoride from offgases generated by pyrohydrolysis of siliceous fluorspars. The test results showed than an aluminum fluoride reactor operating at maximum efficiency could retain 96 percent of the fluorine contained in off-gases generated by pyrohydrolysis of siliceous fluorspar. The requirements are a reactor temperature of 200° C. and a reactor entrance gas containing 5 mole-percent hydrogen fluoride. Partial pressure equilibrium constants were determined for the reaction of alumina monohydrate and wet hydrogen fluoride gas from 200° to 350° C. and for the reaction of alumina and wet hydrogen fluoride gas from 350° to 700° C. Both reactions are reversible, and they proceed in directions that are dependent upon the temperature and the relative HF:H2O concentration. Logarithms of the equilibrium constants were used to plot the reaction isobars; these can be used to calculate the theoretical maximum efficiency of a reactor processing wet hydrogen fluoride gas between 200° and 700° C. The theoretical maximum efficiency decreases with increasing temperature.
