The Federal Bureau of Mines coal-pyrite flotation process has been modi¬fied to produce a concentrated final clean coal slurry underflow that could be dewatered more effectively by filtration or centrifugation. This change was accomplished by redesigning the Bureau's two-stage flotation pilot plant facility and running the second-stage flotation step with undiluted or only partially diluted first stage coal froth concentrate. Results of the pilot plant flotation tests showed that substantial sulfur reduction could be achieved by flotation with undiluted pulp but some dilution is recommended for maximum selectivity. For example, coal-pyrite flotation in slurry of 25 percent solids yielded clean coal products analyzing as low as 0.7 percent pyritic sulfur and froth reject products containing slightly over 3.0 percent pyritic sulfur. In comparison, coal-pyrite flotation with pulp diluted to about 12.5 percent solids yielded clean coal containing as low as 0.4 percent pyritic sulfur and froth reject of 5.6 to 6.7 percent pyritic sulfur. Despite the need for some dilution, it was concluded that excellent coal-¬pyrite flotation selectivity could be achieved without diluting to 6 or 7 per¬cent solids as done in the earlier work. Thus the economics of coal-pyrite flotation would be improved by easing clean coal dewatering problems and by reducing second-stage flotation cell volume requirements.

"INTRODUCTION The Big Four fault and the Sandy Creek fault, with several cross faults, traverse the Stalion-Curnel fluorspar prospect in a northeasterly direction. The Big Four mine, about three-quarters of a mile northeast of the prospect, is the only active mine in the immediate area.A resistivity survey was made of a portion of the prospect by the Division of Geophysical Exploration, Bureau of Mines, in May and June 1946. As a result of this survey, five holes were drilled by the Bureau of Mines during the period from October 8 to December 16, 1946. Two Longyear No. 12 Junior Straitline diamond drills were used for the work.ACKNOWLEDGMENTSIn its program of investigation of mineral deposits, the Bureau of Mines has as its primary objective more effective utilization of our mineral resources to the end that they make the greatest possible contribution to national security and economy. This p aver is the second of a series recording the results of tests made at various quarries throughout the United States to determine, (1) the relation between the size gradation of feed to, and product from, primary crushers; (2) the particle shape of crushed product; (3) the differences in gradation and particle shape produced by different types of primary crushers; and (4) the differences in gradation and particle shape caused by crushing different kinds of stone. Primary crushing has received comparatively little attention in the technical literature in spite of the fact that the design of the whole crushing plant should be correlated to the performance of the primary crusher.

The objective of this investigation by the Bureau of Mines was to determine the response to sulfatization of diverse low-grade manganiferous materials in the iron formation of the Cuyuna district. In line with this objective a bench-scale sulfatizing procedure was developed that was less expensive and more rapid than pilot-plant methods. Samples from the central and south- western parts of the North range were tested. Results of evaluating a total of 46 pelletized samples, originating in areas with an estimated potential resource of 94 million long tons with a manganese content of 7 percent, indicates that approximately 87 percent of the manganese may be recovered as a synthetic manganese ore. This is equivalent to more than 12 million long tons of a metallurgical-grade ore, containing 46 percent manganese. It is anticipated that a premium product, containing over 50 percent manganese, may be obtained by sulfatizing procedures. Most of the formulas are expressed in terms of the compressibility factor, with this factor being an explicit function of the temperature and the molal density. Ground quartzite, known in the industry as amorphous silica, is produced from a quartzite deposit near Honey Brook, Pa., by George F. Pettinos, Inc., of Bala-Cynwyd, Pa. The quartzite is mined by the open pit method and processed in a mill at the mine. The operation regularly produces five standard grades of sand and one grade of crushed stone; however, the company accepts special orders and will produce material to meet the customer's specifications. Beneficiation (chiefly crushing and screening) is controlled by laboratory screen tests on samples taken during preparation of the sand. The chief uses of the sand are for foundry operations, furnace lining, concrete aggregate, and other specialized uses. The quartzite in this deposit is of uniform composition and does not require control by chemical analysis. However, for special purposes, analysis will be furnished.

Cost evaluations were made for five processes for producing 100,000 tons of electrorefined copper per year from a chalcopyrite concentrate. The processes were (1) conventional smelting with all furnace gases vented to the atmosphere; (2) conventional smelting with converter gases routed to an acid plant and reverberatory gases vented to the atmosphere; (3) conventional smelting with converter gases routed to an acid plant and reverberatory gases to a citrate system plant; (4) conventional smelting with all furnace gases routed to a citrate system plant; and (5) a modified smelting process in which the concentrate is roasted before being charged to the reverberatory furnace, with roaster and converter gases routed to an acid plant. The total fixed capital costs of the plants were estimated as (1) $56.7 million, (2) $77.4 million, (3) $87.2 million, (4) $73.9 million, and (5) $77.0 million, respectively. Total S02 removal from stack gases as sulfuric acid or sulfur for each process was (1) none, (2) 66 percent, (3) 99 percent, (4) 98 percent, and (5) 78 percent. Assuming no credit for byproduct sulfur or sulfuric acid, total operating costs per pound of electro-refined copper produced were estimated as (1) $0.081, (2) $0.103, (3) $0.119, (4) $0.111, and (5) $0.103, respectively.

The heat contents of the sesquioxides of erbium, holmium, thulium, and ytterbium (Er203, Ho203, Tm203, and Yb203) in the cubic crystalline form were measured over the temperature range from 298° to 1,800° K. The erbium and holmium sesquioxides gave regular heat content-temperature curves. Thulium sesquioxide had a minor thermal anomaly near 1,680° K, with a heat absorption of 310 cal/mole; similarly, ytterbium sesquioxide had a minor anomaly near 1,365° K, with a heat absorption of 150 cal/mole. The heat content results are presented in both tabular form (at 100° intervals) and in algebraic form. Entropy increments, corresponding to the tabulated heat content results, also are listed.

Credited with production of more than 164,000 flasks Of quicksilver from 1876 to 1944, the Oat Hill mine has ranked third in output in the United States. During World War II, when the demand for mercury was high, this property was selected for diamond drill with the purpose of increasing ore reserves so that production could be maintained or, if necessary, increased. Although the existence of marginal-grade ore (fill material) left in the stapes and possibly of virgin ore of good grade had suspected in certain parts of the Oat Hill mine, no factual information to tonnage, grade, or location was available. In close cooperation with the Federal Geological Survey, the Bureau of Mines studied old records and the few available incomplete maps. Diamond drilling began in November 1943 and was completed in December 1944. Twenty-eight holes aggregating 8,121 feet were drilled, in only parts of the promising areas disclosed by the study of the data available. Detailed data on the work done by the Bureau as well as a brief history of the property and some operating details are described in this report.

This report describes experimental investigations made in the batchwise retorting of Colorado oil shale. Three heat-carrying mediums were used -hot shale gas, superheated steam, and hot flue gas. Using hot Shale gas for retorting, the several variables studied were retort-inlet-gas temperature, gas velocity through the shale bed, shale particle size, and grade of shale. In studying the effect of any one of these variables on oil yield, as and operability, the other variables were maintained essentially constant. Oil yields decreased with increasing in-let-gas temperature and increasing shale-particle size, and oil yield increased with increasing grade of Shale up to 50 gallons of oil per ton of shale, beyond which the process was inoperable because of swelling and caking of the shale during retorting. Changes in gas velocity had little effect on oil yield. Gas yield increased with increasing inlet-gas temperature, gas velocity, particle size, and shale grade. Oil yields of 100 percent of Fischer assay and from 1,600 to 1,800 cubic feet of 300-B.t.u. gas per ton of shale were obtained. Two runs only were made using superheated steam. Oil yields averaged 97 percent of Fischer assay, and gas yields averaged 4,00o cubic feet per ton of shale. Retorting with a hot flue gas produced from combustion in the shale bed, as in the N-T-U process, gave excellent yields using closely sized shale with recycling of flue gas. An excess of fine shale in the charge resulted in channeling and low oil yields. Using no recycle gas, good yields were obtained that tended to decrease with increasing air rate, and the retorting rate increased with increasing air rate over the range studied. Coking was not found serious with 30-gallon shale at the air rates used.

The Bureau of Mines developed a rapid instrumental method of analyzing oil well scales containing primarily barium sulfate. After removal of oil and water by carbon disulfide) the scale was dissolved in strong hydrochloric acid. The cations, barium, calcium, strontium, magnesium, and iron, were determined with the flame photometer using the method of additions. Sulfate was deter-mined colorimetrically after separation by selective adsorption on an alumina column. Phosphate was determined colorimetrically and carbonate titrimetrically. The method was reasonably accurate, although iron and magnesium were found to have mutual interference.

The basic objective of this project was to determine the cost-effectiveness of dust control used on unpaved mine haul roads. Field testing was conducted at three surface coal mines (two in Wyoming, one in southern Illinois) for a total of 20 weeks. The highest control efficiency measured for a chemical dust suppressant, 82 percent, was for calcium chloride two weeks after application. Generally, however, the control efficiencies hovered in the 40 to 60 per-cent range over the first two weeks since application, and then decreased with time. After the fifth week, the limited number of data points suggest a control efficiency of less than 20 percent. Composite watering data were fairly uniform. Watering once per hour resulted in a TSP control efficiency of approximately 40 percent. Doubling that application rate increased the control effectiveness by about 15 percent to 55 percent. Chemical dust suppressants (primarily salts and lignons) can be shown to be more cost-effective than watering under some conditions. Variations in pyrite reactivity are known to exist within samples collected from different areas. Using samples collected from acid and non-acid sites, the relationship between the factors affecting pyrite oxidation and observed variations in pyrite reactivity was studied. Heavy liquid separations were used to extract the pyrite from nine pulverized rock, coal, and coal refuse samples. Simulated weathering tests were used to determine the degree of reactivity of the extracted pyritic material. Representative portions of each pyritic sample were analyzed for whole rock composition (including pyritic sulfur and neutralization potential), for elemental composition, and by x-ray diffractometry. The samples were also examined with reflected light microscopy to ascertain pyrite morphology distributions. Tests for the presence of iron-oxidizing bacteria were all negative indicating the leaching tests were conducted under abiotic conditions. The results of the simulated weathering tests permitted the partitioning of the samples into two groups based on positive or negative neutralization potential (NP) values. Determinations were then made to evaluate the degree to which a variety of factors, including temperature, partial pressure of oxygen and water, and crystallography affected pyrite reactivity. Multiple regression analyses showed no statistically significant relationship between degree of reactivity and elemental composition. However, for samples with negative NPs, a simple regression analysis showed a strong linear relationship to exist between the reactivity of the pyrite and the proportion of "unstable" pyrite (framboidal + mossy pitted) found in each extracted pyrite sample. Samples of pyrite with positive NPs, although producing acidity, did so in at least one order of magnitude less than the NP deficient samples, indicating the important role that NP plays in controlling pyrite reactivity. A simple linear regression between cumulative sulfate production and NP for the three samples with positive NPs had a correlation coefficient of 0.99. For the nine samples grouped together, a linear regression model between cumulative sulfate production and NP (both negative and positive) was established between log of sulfate and NP.

The paper includes a short discussion of results, tabular data, and individual analyses of eight. California crudes. Analyses of other crude oils from California have been published it Reports of Investigations 2595, 2608, and 2846. The samples were obtained by members of the San Francisco office of the Bureau of Mines. The collecting 65 samples was facilitated by the courtesy of representatives of oil companies in California. The methods used in testing and analyzing the samples are described in detail in Bureau of Mines Bulletin 207. A discussion of the interpretation of crude-oil analyses, as made by the Bureau of Mines, is given in Bureau of Mines Report of Investigations 2806.

The effects of water immersion and dry aging on flame spread performance and other physical properties were then examined. This Bureau of Mines report was written to provide information for those concerned with using rigid urethane foam as a sealant. Its intent is to describe the various laboratory evaluations performed and to delineate the performance of each candidate. This report neither promotes nor discourages the use of rigid urethane foams. It presents results that will enable those responsible for using or enforcing the use of rigid urethane foams in underground mines to make informed decisions.

This paper is the twelfth of a series on smelting in the lead blast furnace and the fifth dealing with blast-furnace gases. It was noted in Report of Investigations 2957 that the gases evolved from the top of the lead blast furnace at Tooele were similar in composition to those from the top of an iron blast furnace. It was noted in Report of Investigations 3095 that at Kellogg, where a smaller percentage of coke on charge and shorter stock column were employed, the gases evolved were much less reducing. At times there was a considerable amount of oxygen in the top gases at the second plant. More SO2 was also evolved from sulphides in the charge. Then operations were conducted as at Kellogg, the gases were alternately reducing and oxidizing. This paper deals with the gases evolved in smelting a charge containing more zinc than at either of the other two plants with about the same amount of coke as was used at Kellogg,: To compare other factors influencing the composition of the gases, it may be noted that at Tooele the approximate height of the charge column was 15 feet, at Kellogg 9 feet and at Trail 13 feet. The furnaces have about the -same cross-sectional area- tog. The furnaces at Tooele are about 6 inches wider at the tuyeres, being 54 inches wide against 48 for the other two plants. At Tooele and Kellogg the furnaces are fed at the top from bottom-dump cars. At Trail the charges are dumped from Decauville cars (bottom cars which dump when tilted), which run on tracks placed on both sides of the blast furnaces. The hoods through which the waste gases are conducted are directly above the shafts of the furnaces. The flues for removing the effluent gases lead off from under the charge floor at Tooele and Kellogg. (Charging and distribution of the feed in the furnace covered later in a rate paper of series.)

The purpose of this research by the Federal Bureau of Mines was to investigate the recovery of tin from mine-run ores and low-grade concentrates. Over 95 percent of the total tin in such materials was volatilized to tin chlorides at temperatures ranging from 520° to 565° C. Gaseous mixtures of hydrogen and hydrogen chloride were used for reducing cassiterite to stannous oxide and for converting this compound to tin chlorides. The chlorides were swept from the reaction zone of an oscillating kiln by a rapid flow of reactant gases and collected in a condensing system. Losses of tin that occur in current metallurgical processing were prevented. Approximately the same time of treatment was required for minus 35-mesh mine-run ores and low-grade concentrates. In a continuous process, the circulating gases would require some enrichment.
