Geomembrane (GMB) liners are being used more frequently for the storage or capping of mine waste due to stricter regulatory requirements relating to environmental protection. The longevity of any liner system will be a function of environmental conditions, design (including materials selection), construction and condition monitoring during operations or closure. Based on experience and case studies, this paper presents a review, from design to handover, of some of the smaller and often overlooked details that can have significant impacts on the performance of the GMB and the project overall.The topics covered will include approaches to selecting and testing GMBs to ensure they are suitable. Design considerations to aid installation and quality assurance during construction. Understanding action leakage rates and the consequences of leakage when it creates whales. Coal dust is hazardous to underground coal workers and water spray is the most common and economic method for controlling coal dust. Previous studies proved that the addition of surfactants can improve the performance of water spray on coal dust suppression. The evaluation methods for surfactants vary from different studies. The zeta potential test is a common method for evaluating surfactants with ionicity. Generally, the suspension of coal dust with pure water usually showed a negative value of zeta potential. The addition of cationic surfactants can increase the zeta potential to a positive value with a small dosage, while the addition of anionic surfactants can only lower the zeta potential. However, there is a lack of comprehensive study to investigate the relationship between the zeta potential and the suppression performance for coal dust. The aim of this study is to reveal the consistency and discrepancy between the zeta potential and the suppression efficiency of a surfactant. Firstly, the mixture of cationic surfactant solutions and coal dust would be evaluated by the zeta potential test. The wind tunnel tests would then be conducted for the same surfactant solutions to measure and calculate the suppression efficiency. It was found that the addition of surfactant can increase the zeta potential and the suppression efficiency and it reached the greatest efficiency when the zeta potential approached to zero. The equilibrium of zeta potential can benefit the suppression performance of surfactants in the wind tunnel test. The result of this study can achieve a better understanding of the mechanism for coal dust suppression. The selection of surfactants will also be suggested for researchers or industries in terms of coal dust control. It would be more economic if a similar performance could be achieved by less consumption of surfactants.

The procedure used for Truck Maintenance is described systematically in this paper. Emphasis is given to manpower required, work facilities, daily maintenance and oil sampling procedure. Scheduled Preventative Maintenance Service, Electrical Service, Component Change, Truck Overhaul and Outside Contractors are also discussed. The system used, achieves the required results with an average haul truck availability in 1981 of 87.9 per cent. INTRODUCTION Situated on the Island of Bougainville, in Papua New Guinea, the Bougainville Copper mine nestles in a valley near the crest of the Crown Prince Range, between 600 m and 980 m above sea level. The mine is serviced by two towns, Arawa - an open town on the Coast and Panguna at the Mine Site. Currently Bougainville Copper operates an open pit mine removing an average of 198 000 dry metric tonnes of material per day (115 000 tonnes ore and 83 000 tonnes of waste) with a fleet of electric shovels and 154 tonne electric haul trucks.

"The use of conditional simulation to characterise mine plan uncertainty is increasing for the assessment of risk in mining projects. While the development of grade uncertainty profiles is relatively straightforward and can be validated using standard geostatistical techniques, the addition of geological uncertainty to evaluate total risk remains problematic. Some of the problems associated with geological uncertainty methods include the clustering of data in favourable geologic units, difficulty in training image definition and the inability to address change of support issues for categorical variables. Despite these obstacles, the importance of geological uncertainty as a contributor to total uncertainty has prompted Newmont to explore and evaluate the use of various techniques (and combinations of techniques) on different deposit types.Two orogenic deposits of different geological complexity were selected for the study: Subika, a shear zone-hosted deposit, and Merian, a deposit containing gold mineralisation associated with quartz vein zones and stockwork within which are found higher-grade quartz breccia zones. Newmont trialled various categorical simulation approaches to determine the applicability of these methods for each deposit type and the effect of parameter choice on the width of the uncertainty interval. Some of the techniques that were trialled include multiple point statistics methods, sequential indicator simulation using local probabilities as well as variations of these methodologies.The goals of this study included: gaining an understanding of which techniques may work best in which deposit types gaining an understanding of the intricacies of each method gaining an understanding of the effect that each method has on total uncertainty analysis.This paper presents a comparison of the various techniques and makes recommendations for their use in uncertainty analysis.CITATION:Jewbali, A, Perry, R, Allen, L and Inglis, R, 2014. In some deposits valuable heavy mineral quality is poor due to increased mineral surface coatings from higher slimes and more competent sand orebodies. Mineral surface coating can include silica or aluminium rich clay minerals and iron based minerals that render the final product quality off-specification, in this case specifically ilmenite and zircon. Conventional physical beneficiation processes such as magnetic separation, electrostatic separation and gravity separation are not able to remove these surface coatings. Surface dependent separation techniques such as electrostatic separators are affected by these coatings which hinders the rejection of non-valuable mineral from product. Attrition scrubbing is the most commonly used technique to reduce surface coatings, using mechanically induced particle to particle interaction, abrasion and shearing.In many cases it is a challenge to measure the surface removal efficiency of these scrubbing units. Elemental analysis techniques (ie X-ray flourescence) (XRF) in a multi mineral environment are unable to measure surface impurity reduction with enough precision. Mineralogical analysis (in this case Qemscan®) has constraints in terms of sample preparation with highly coated particles being plucked out during block polishing. This paper suggests a combination of laboratory separation techniques coupled with elemental analysis to evaluate the surface removal efficiency. Three different types of feed materials were used to analyse the efficiency of surface removal using production attritioner scrubbers. This approach relates the downstream beneficiation plant’s expected performance with that of the attrition scrubber’s scrubbing efficiency.

Seven papers included in Session 8 of the Third International Mine Water Congress under the heading "Achievements in Mine Water Management & Research" have been reviewed. Only one paper, a case study by Masters on biological treatment of inorganically polluted effluent, has any connection with research in the sense of seeking new, generally applicable knowledge which would advance the frontiers of mine water management. The remainder deal with various aspects of the management of mine water ranging from investigation of the geology of a specific aquifer system through operating dewatering systems to the management of specific effluent disposal problems.

Steinert provides a wide portfolio of Sensor Based Sorting (SBS) technologies, including the possibility to combine different sensor data in the development of the separation applications. This multi sensor approach provides a larger applicability and extensive flexibility for the technology. This effect is emphasized for mining applications, once every ore body presents its own features that can also comprise a large material variability. In this sense, every sorting application is customized and comprises a personalized solution. This means each project development includes a test work stage that approaches from the project discussion, test definition, up to test outcomes and processing development. In relation to very complex and large projects, a sorting pilot scale plant has become a crescent tendency. By having a pilot plant stage can represent a chance to test larger amounts of material from different mining areas, different mining projects, such as to consider different processing targets and application approaches. Based on that, a better understanding about the technology application can guide a more assertive development of large and complex ore sorting projects. The aim of this paper is to provide information about the applicability of the Steinert multi sensor technology at different pilot plants in South America. It consists in a compilation of laboratory test results, plant design and operational results. For that, a chromite, an IOCG deposit and a sulphide gold ore projects are presented. Additionally, the paper discusses the application of different sensor technologies combinations such as various processing targets, thus providing a wider understanding about sorting applications and flexibility.

Autogenous (AG) and Semi Autogenous (SAG) grinding mills are the conventional selection for large-scale grinding circuits. It is accepted that these forms of comminution are not the most energy efficient available. This efficiency combined with escalating energy prices, steel prices and the requirement to process larger, lower grade deposits has necessitated that better comminution techniques are found to challenge the dominant position of AG/SAG mills in the grinding circuit. Recent advances in high pressure grinding rolls (HPGR), particularly in terms of roll surface protection have meant that, depending on the application, an economic alternative is available to the large diameter AG/SAG mills. Mining companies now recognise the potential benefits of HPGR and so they need proper assessment in the design of new or upgrade of existing grinding processes. Of course, the answer to the question AG/SAG or HPGR is not straightforward and the impact of the grinding process on the whole metallurgical process needs to be evaluated. Clearly this is a complex decision to make and requires substantial metallurgical knowledge, test work, and objective analysis. The perceived downstream processing benefits will differ between different plants depending on the ore type and processing conditions. The optimal design of the comminution circuit requires that a robust methodology is followed to objectively characterise the ore, size the equipment and determine the downstream processing benefits. The paper gives a brief comparison of the capital and operating costs for both grinding systems, and then outlines the appropriate test work that is required to make an informed decision.

The development of Mount Isa Mines Limited power supply is traced through the history of the mine operations. As would be expected, growth of the power supply system follows closely the increase in mine output, although it will be seen that total kWh. produced per ton milled shows a considerable reduction in later years when the mine output showed a more rapid rate of increase. That this reduction is not more marked is possibly due to the increased community and Shire Council power usage per head of population.INTRODUCTIONThe geographical position of Mount lsa, far from any large regional power supply Authority, dictated the policy that the Company be responsible for the production and suppiy of all power required for the plant operation. The Company also, in November 1937, accepted responsibility for the supply of a part of the power requirements of the township of Mount Isa. The history of power supply to the Mine may be divided into several phases.1. The supply Of lighting and power during the first plant construction period 1929-1931.2. The construction of the first section of the Mines Power Station, comprising Nos. 1 and 2 turbo alternators and boilers.3. The addition of No. 3 turbo alternator and boiler.4. The thick coal seams of the South Maitland field are the only ones in New South Wales which have been worked extensively to heights beyond 3.8 m (nominal "thin" seam height). Under shallow cover only minor difficulties were experienced in developing first workings but later the widespread occurrence of incidents of spontaneous combustion and the growth of "creeps" extending over large areas gave the field its own peculiar problems. As the mines have driven under deeper cover extreme difficulties in forming development roadways have been experi- enced. Various methods have been adopted in an attempt to overcome the problems of the field.

Mining of the zinc, lead and silver deposit at the Broken Hill Southern Operations site has been occurring for over 100 years. As a result of this, a significant amount of high-grade ore is now taken from narrow remnant pillars left between old stopes and zones of previously mined ground. Stopes have been filled with either hydraulic fill (also known as ‘sandfill’), cemented hydraulic fill (cemented sandfill), waste rock backfill or a mixture of these fill types.In the last ten years, there has been considerable success mining through narrow pillars where sandfill is exposed in the development face and/or walls using a ‘shell’ support regime, wherein a layer of bolted mesh is sandwiched between two layers of sprayed fibrecrete (25 mm fibrecrete, then mesh and bolt, followed by a final 50 mm layer of fibrecrete). Shell support is also used in very poor, broken, relaxed ground conditions and in areas filled with cemented fill (sandfill with a minimum four per cent cement content).The next stage of innovation has been to develop a technique for mining through old stope voids filled with uncemented sandfill, known locally as ‘contours’ (old cut-and-fill working), an activity where unconsolidated sandfill can run at the face and from the backs. The challenge is to prevent exposed sandfill in the face and the backs from failing before it can be supported.To achieve this, the Southern Operations mine has implemented a technique in which 6 m long spiling bars are used to strengthen and stabilise the sandfill in front of the face. The hollow steel bars are driven in around the heading perimeter in a closely spaced pattern then pumped full of grout. The bars and the grout stabilise the sandfill in front of the face, preventing it from failing into the drive during excavation and prior to further support being installed.A final support system consisting of shotcrete, mesh, bolts and steel girders is installed as excavation progresses. Both the initial and final support systems are essentially passive support systems designed for a low-stress environment (as the stress originates mostly from the mass of unconsolidated sandfill).This process is slow and labour intensive. Fifteen separate cycles of people/machinery are needed to progress one equivalent heading cut (compared to six for a standard fibrecrete- and bolt pattern-supported rock face heading). This slow pace introduces scheduling challenges, but the process opens up parts of the orebody that were previously uneconomical to mine.CITATION:Carroll, D, 2014. Uncertainty in prediction and modelling of geological (physical) ore continuity in geometrically complex ore deposits is a key risk factor in mining. Reducing geometric uncertainty of hard-boundary ore/waste contacts and related geological features improves the efficiency of local mineral resource estimation and reserve calculation, mine/stope planning, ore control and in-mine exploration. Detailed underground mapping of serial-level drives provides a continuous record of the characteristics and contact configuration of ore, as well as crucial ore-related geological features that are required to resolve geometrical variability when closely spaced drilling proves inadequate or is cost-prohibitive. The mapping-based approach described in this paper re-establishes the focus on the geology of the orebody by incorporating high-value, detailed geologic mine mapping information. Mapped ore-related configurations and relationships, recorded on a succession of faces or on a series of levels, provide the basis for 3D interpolation and extrapolation of the local geologic continuity of an orebody. Correlative points representing locations of key ore-related geologic features on each face or level are linked by 3D polylines or trajectories forming a coherent geometrical framework. The coherent progression of geometric changes mapped by these trajectories reveals the overall ‘dynamic’ of the geometrical framework, as well as the spatial tendencies of its geological constituents. Distinct sets of ore control trajectories are selected from within the framework and are used in the construction of alternative geological ore continuity models. As mining proceeds, alternative models are evaluated, and are then either refined or rejected. The geometrical framework is used to evaluate theoretical models and practical heuristics, focus exploration targeting and inform and guide all aspects of mine geology in active mines. This approach also lends itself to analysis of global ore continuity in the re-evaluation of mature or abandoned mines. Its use is particularly effective in geometrically complex orebodies such as the West Branch orebody and the orebodies of No 2 mine of the Balmat-Edwards-Pierrepont zinc district, which are used to illustrate the method. Civil engineering infrastructures are often subjected to different types of natural and mechanical activities. These influences may result in serviceability or even in stability of structures due to material deformations, increased water content within the materials used or the formation of internal or adjacent cavities that may threaten the infrastructure. Construction practices can lead to development of such defects in the form of cavities. In civil engineering it is crucial to detect these variations in material properties and to detect the presence of defects. However, as they are often hidden from view, these attributes may be difficult or impossible to target with traditional testing methods. For these reasons rapid geophysical methods, such as ground penetrating radar (GPR), are increasingly being used. At the University of Queensland (UQ) GPR is used for detection of voids and cavities which have been caused by an over excavation of the earth pressure balance machine (EPB) operating in a closed mode.A variety of numerical simulations using the finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) methods and preliminary experiments have been carried out in order to specify information about the nature, type, size, location and other characteristics of targets to be detected by GPR. In doing this the difficulty of interpreting GPR data, which is mainly due to the complexity of the factors involved in multiple possible solutions of the observed features, can be overcome.

Precious metal deposits containing fine-grained disseminated or dispersed gold-silver form by reactions between metal-bearing hydrothermal fluids and sedimentary host rocks. Host rock permeability and chemical composition exert a primary influence on the fluid movement necessary for any primary dispersion halos to form around ore bodies, and determine whether a disseminated style orebody itself will even form. Where the mineralized rocks are relatively unfractured the margins of the orebodies exhibit abrupt decreases in gold content, and strong corresponding decreases in the contents of other metals. Primary dispersion patterns of this type are difficult to recognize and commonly are only a few meters (or less) in width. If the host rocks were well shattered and broken before mineralization, remnant amounts of the hydrothermal fluids may be dissipated in fractures lateral to or above the ore zones. This causes geochemical anomalies to form with clays and silt- size silica within the fractures over distances of up to at least 30-50 meters away from the main orebodies. The tendency for large primary dispersion halos not to form around these deposits explains the disappointing results from so many drilling programs where no multi-gram gold-grade material was even found: if large areas and apparent large volumes of rock contain one gram or less gold that likely is the "orebody" and not a halo effect around high grade mineralization.

The development of machine learning (ML) algorithms has led to promising advances in lithology classification from geophysical logs, which is indispensable in various underground engineering applications. Due to the resolution and availability of logging data, ML models can recognise lithology change in a definitive form at a fine scale (0.01 m). While the results from previous models indicated promising performance in the classification, the robust capability of generalising lithology prediction to unseen data may not be true for those models due to: (1) data bias caused by borehole selections, and (2) logging data mismatches among boreholes. To this end, this paper aims to investigate the generalisability of ML models and seek potential improvements. Four ML models were selected to be trained on single reference boreholes to test the other (as unseen) in the same region, which includes Support Vector Classifier (SVC), Random Forest (RF), eXtreme Gradient Boosting (XGBoost) and Residual Neural Network (ResNet10). The data set involves 11 boreholes from a coalmine in north-western Bowen Basin (Queensland, Australia): density, gamma ray, neutron, and sonic logs are selected as inputs. Additionally, a data adaptation method is applied for better generalisability. The results show that there is an accuracy trade-off between the same borehole and unseen boreholes across the models. It also indicates a 16–43 per cent reduction in model performance when generalising the predictions (in marco-F1 score), while the adapted data sets can contribute to a around 12 per cent improvement. This study provides a fundamental understanding of the model generalisability when using a single borehole, essential for further correlating boreholes for regional lithology classification; the adaptation method can improve the generalised accuracy, and reduces the labour to label lithology, which facilitates the identification of gas storage mechanisms, geological/geophysical modelling, and stratigraphic analysis.

Models of the evolution of the hydrothermal systems that form porphyry Cu (Mo-Au) deposits are compromised because aqueous magma-derived fluids in the ore zones of most deposits have changed from their original magmatic compositions as a result of cooling, depressurising, mineral precipitation, brine-vapour unmixing and fluid-rock reactions. However, in deep quartz-rich, sulfide-poor veins from numerous porphyry type deposits, we have identified parental fluids trapped in inclusions at near magmatic temperatures and pressures above the brine-vapour unmixing solvus. We have analysed these inclusions for bulk salinity, density, solute chemistry, helium isotopic ratios and elemental composition. These parental inclusions contain 35 - 70 volume per cent bubble, are low to moderate salinity, contain up to ten mol per cent CO2, and commonly contain a chalcopyrite daughter crystal. Our results indicate that these Cu-rich fluids transport Cu from a plutonic complex below upward into a hydrothermal system, where decompression, cooling, unmixing and water-rock reaction drive ore-mineral precipitation. Na/Cl ratios greater than one indicate that in addition to chlorine, sulfur and/or carbonate must play a key role in Cu transportation. Helium isotope ratios indicate that between ~15 and 100 per cent of helium in these fluids is mantle-derived. We suggest that in addition to He, volatiles from mafic magmas in the mantle are also likely to supply CO2, Cu and S to the fluids that form porphyry copper deposits. This paper discusses the implementation and potential limitations of the method for estimating sampling and analytical errors of multiple source mine output blended into a shipping product, described by Everett and Ziegelaar (2010). The practice of quality measurement varies between iron ore miners. The common objective is to monitor effective resource utilisation and control of product quality to customers. A flow diagram is given presenting the various options used by iron ore mine operators and the merits of the different options are discussed.

Carbonic acid leaching of crude iron-containing magnesia derived from Savage River magnesite yields a magnesium bicarbonate leachate with a substantial soluble iron concentration. The iron concentration depends upon the leaching conditions (particularly time, temperature and pulp density) but is generally in the range 0.005-0.5 g/litre. If this soluble iron is not removed prior to the precipitation of the magnesium as a hydrated carbonate, then this product will be contaminated by the iron, and will not yield a final product (high-purity magnesia) that meets specifications.The soluble iron content of the magnesium bicarbonate leachate can be reduced to an acceptable level by addition of solid aluminium sulphate either during carbonic acid, leaching of the crude calcine or to the clarified leachate. Chemical analysis and X-ray diffraction revealed that the iron is precipitated as an iron-containing hydrotalcite-type compound, [Mg6(Al,Fe)2(OH)16]CO3.4H2O. The actual composition of the precipitate depends on the amount of aluminium sulphate added and the precipitation technique used. Because precipitation of iron in this manner also results in reduced magnesium recovery from the leachates, It WIll be necessary to develop methods for recovering the magnesium component of the precipitates.

The efficient design of carbon-in-pulp (C.I.P.) plants involves the integration of both process engineering and design engineering.Many recently constructed plants have not recognised the above interrelationship, and as such have incurred higher capital and operating costs than were in reality necessary. This has been compounded in some cases by slavishly following the design of plants where process conditions are different for the ore characteristics in question, thus perpetuating design errors that finally become industry "accepted practice".In the paper that is to be presented the unit operations of crushing, grinding, classification, leaching, adsorption, desorption and electrowinning in C.I.P. plants will be discussed with reference to the integration of process and design engineering.
